Abstract

Quantum information processing at scale will require sufficiently stable and long-lived qubits, likely enabled by error-correction codes. Several recent superconducting-qubit experiments, however, reported observing intermittent spatiotemporally correlated errors that would be problematic for conventional codes, with ionizing radiation being a likely cause. Here, we directly measured the cosmic-ray contribution to spatiotemporally correlated qubit errors. We accomplished this by synchronously monitoring cosmic-ray detectors and qubit energy-relaxation dynamics of 10 transmon qubits distributed across a 5x5x0.35 mm$^3$ silicon chip. Cosmic rays caused correlated errors at a rate of 1/(10 min), accounting for 17$\pm$1% of all such events. Our qubits responded to essentially all of the cosmic rays and their secondary particles incident on the chip, consistent with the independently measured arrival flux. Moreover, we observed that the landscape of the superconducting gap in proximity to the Josephson junctions dramatically impacts the qubit response to cosmic rays. Given the practical difficulties associated with shielding cosmic rays, our results indicate the importance of radiation hardening -- for example, superconducting gap engineering -- to the realization of robust quantum error correction., Comment: 34 pages, 16 figures

Abstract

The Micro Booster Neutrino Experiment (MicroBooNE) is a Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LArTPC) located in the Booster Neutrino Beam at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The experiment was devised to investigate a series of observed anomalies concerning short-baseline neutrino oscillation physics. The LArTPC technology enables the experiment to study neutrino-argon scattering with unprecedented detail. This thesis presents a cosmic-ray characterisation and rate measurement. The understanding of cosmic activity in the detector - MicroBooNE's dominant background - is then used to develop cosmic rejection tools. A flavour-agnostic neutrino selection is constructed, which forms the cornerstone of this and further analyses. Inclusive muon and electron charged-current neutrino interaction selections with unprecedented purity and efficiency are presented. The first fully-automated characterisation of electron neutrinos in a muon neutrino beam with the LArTPC detector technology is performed. The Booster Neutrino Beam has an energy peaking around 1GeV and an intrinsic electron content of approximately 0.5%. The analysis investigates electrons produced in charged-current electron neutrino interactions. The kinematics of the electrons are measured along with comparisons to simulation. Most of the systematic uncertainties are constrained using a data-driven sample of charged-current muon neutrino events. The measurement of electron neutrinos originating from the Booster Neutrino Beam is a crucial component towards understanding the nature of the observed excess of low-energy electromagnetic-like events at its predecessor, MiniBooNE.

4. Studies Supporting PMT Characterization for the IceCube Collaboration: Precise Photodiode Calibration

Abstract

A laboratory set-up has been developed to more precisely measure the DOM optical sensitivity as a function of angle and wavelength. DOMs are calibrated in water using a broad beam of light whose intensity is measured with a NIST calibrated photodiode. This study will refine the current knowledge of the IceCube response and lay a foundation for future precision upgrades to the detector. Good understanding of the photodiode readout is indispensable for the DOM calibration. Corrections to the photodiode measurements due to the amplifier circuit were investigated. To accomplish this, a general software structure has been added to the existing framework. Because the set of parameters in the source sector is still growing, modularity and a high level of automation were important objectives. 6. Quantum-based amplification and multiplexing for the Project 8 and Ricochet experiments

Abstract

Readout of low-intensity microwave signals over a wide bandwidth has become increasingly important for fundamental science. The high frequency allows high information transfer, ideal for multiplexing detectors and reducing low-frequency noise. This work presents the design and calibration of frequency-multiplexed readout for Ricochet, a segmented coherent neutrino scattering detector. The experimental goal to lower the recoil detection threshold requires unprecedented low-noise multiplexing. Additionally, noise added by further microwave amplification is minimised by the use of Josephson Travelling Wave Parametric Amplifiers (JTWPAs), fulfilling the requirements of high-gain, high-bandwidth and single-photon noise. The integration of the multiplexer and JTWPA are presented in the 4-7GHz band, accompanied by ongoing R&D demonstrating JTWPA amplification around 25GHz. Application of JTWPAs at the higher frequency ranges has the capability to lower the noise level by an order of magnitude compared to the traditional HEMT (High Electron Mobility Transistor) amplifiers. Single-photon noise levels open a window of the electromagnetic spectrum that the Project 8 direct neutrino mass experiment and other precision experiments will greatly benefit from.

9. Simulations to investigate the eect of circuit imperfections on the slow extraction process

Abstract

The Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) is a 400 GeV proton accelerator at CERN. Its main purpose is the last step in pre-acceleration of particles before injecting them into the Large Hadron Collider. Besides that, it is used for experiments directly connected to the SPS. For these xed target experiments, a steady slow extraction of the SPS beam is necessary over thousands of turns. The SPS slow extraction process makes use of the third-integer resonance in combination with an electrostatic septum. The stability of the extracted intensity and the losses at the septum are in uenced by the imperfections of the current circuit that drives the SPS quadrupoles. This report summarizes the studies that were carried out with MAD-X to simulate these imperfections.
