We have completed a robotic wide-angle imaging survey of the southern sky (declination less than +15 degrees) at 656.3 nm wavelength, the H-alpha emission line of hydrogen. Each image of the resulting Southern H-Alpha Sky Survey Atlas (SHASSA) covers an area of the sky 13 degrees square at an angular resolution of approximately 0.8 arcminute, and reaches a sensitivity level of 2 rayleigh (1.2 x 10^-17 erg cm^-2 s^-1 arcsec^-2) per pixel, corresponding to an emission measure of 4 cm^-6 pc, and to a brightness temperature for microwave free-free emission of 12 microkelvins at 30 GHz. We report on an infrared 1 to 17 micron study of the nearby (cz = 4600 km/s) interacting spiral galaxy system, UGC 12914/12915, using the ground-based Palomar 200" telescope and PFIRCAM near-infrared detector and space-based mid-infrared imaging and spectral observations using ISOCAM and Phot-S on the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). Strong line emission from aromatic band features at 6.2, 7.7 and 11.3 microns are seen in both the mid-IR imaging and Phot-S spectro-photometry centered on the nuclei. In the connecting bridge, the mid-infrared imaging reveals dust grains intermixed with the atomic hydrogen gas. The heating mechanism for the hot dust is likely to be UV photons diffusing out from the galactic disks and the H II complex located along the extreme northeastern portion of the bridge: The dust emission, or mid-infrared intensity per atomic hydrogen column density ratio, is consistent with heating from the local (bridge) interstellar radiation field., Comment: see http://spider.ipac.caltech.edu/staff/jarrett/papers/vv254/

We report on Keck and Hubble Space Telescope optical observations of the eclipsing binary pulsar system PSR B1718-19, in the direction of the globular cluster NGC 6342. These reveal a faint star ($m_{\rm F702W}=25.21\pm0.07$; Vega system) within the pulsar's 0\farcs5 radius positional error circle. This may be the companion. If it is a main-sequence star in the cluster, it has radius $\rcomp\simeq0.3 \rsun$, temperature $\teff\simeq3600 $K, and mass $\mcomp\simeq0.3 \msun$. In many formation models, however, the pulsar (spun up by accretion or newly formed) and its companion are initially in an eccentric orbit. If so, for tidal circularization to have produced the present-day highly circular orbit, a large stellar radius is required, i.e., the star must be bloated. Using constraints on the radius and temperature from the Roche and Hayashi limits, we infer from our observations that $\rcomp\simlt0.44 \rsun$ and $\teff\simgt3300 $K. We summarize the relationship between the free-free emission foreground and Galactic H-alpha emission. H-alpha observations covering nearly the entire celestial sphere are described. These data provide a template to isolate and/or remove the effect of Galactic free-free emission from observations of the cosmic microwave background. Spectroscopy and imaging provide two complementary methods for measuring the H-alpha emission. Spectroscopy is favored for its velocity resolution and imaging is favored for its angular resolution. HST/NICMOS images of the class I protostar TMR-1 (IRAS04361+2547) reveal a faint companion with 10.0" = 1400 AU projected separation. The central protostar is itself resolved as a close binary with 0.31" = 42 AU separation, surrounded by circumstellar reflection nebulosity. A long narrow filament seems to connect the protobinary to the faint companion TMR-1C, suggesting a physical association. If the sources are physically related then we hypothesize that TMR-1C has been ejected by the protobinary. Following previous suggestions of other researchers, this paper discusses the prospects for astrometric observation of MACHO gravitational microlensing events. We derive the expected astrometric observables for a simple microlensing event with either a dark or self-luminous lens, and demonstrate that accurate astrometry can determine the lens mass, distance, and proper motion in a very general fashion. In particular we argue that in limited circumstances ground-based, narrow-angle differential astrometric techniques are sufficient to measure the lens mass directly, and other lens properties (distance, transverse motion) by applying an independent model for the source distance and motion. We investigate the sensitivity of differential astrometry in determining lens parameters by Monte Carlo methods, and derive a quasi-empirical relationship between astrometric accuracy and mass uncertainty., Comment: 28 p, 12 fig, To appear in the ApJ

The nearby spiral galaxy NGC 6946 was observed with ISO-CAM in the mid-infrared, achieving 7 arcsec resolution and sub-MJy/steradian sensitivity. Images taken with CAM filters LW2 (7 microns) and LW3 (15 microns) are analysed to determine the morphology of this galaxy and understand better the emission mechanisms. The mid-infrared emission follows an exponential disk with a scale length 75 arcsec. This is 60% of the scale length in the optical R-band and radio continuum. The nuclear starburst region is too bright for reliable measurement in these images. Its surface brightness exceeds the inner disk by at least a factor of 12. The arms and interarm regions are clearly detected, with each of these components contributing about equally to the disk emission. The arm-interarm contrast is 2-4 in the mid-IR, close to that measured in the visible R band light and lower than the contrast in $H\alpha$, suggesting that non-ionizing radiation contributes significantly to dust heating., Comment: 4 page, 4 figures. This paper presents near-infrared grism spectroscopy to constrain the efective temperature of TMR-1C, obtained with the Near-Infrared Camera (NIRC) at Keck Observatory. To interpret the data, we construct a grid of extincted M dwarf spectra to compare with the low-resolution (RD120) NIRC spectrum. The assumed extinction corresponds to standard interstellar dust. With the additional assumption that no near-infrared dust excess contributes to the spectrum, then M4.5 is the latest spectral type TMR-1C can have within the uncertainties. ...

The system consists of two counter-rotating spirals having suffered a nearly face-on collsion only ~10(sup 7) years ago.

A long narrow filament seems to connect the protobinary to the faint companion TMR-1C, suggesting a physical association. If the sources are physically related then we hypothesize that TMR-1C has been ejected by the protobinary.

We present 10 micron broadband images of the nearby stars Gleise 15, 71, 628, 699, 725A 725B, 729, and 820A from an experiment designed to detect cool companions.

A concept study was performed in 1994 to develop a mission design for a telescope to achieve the highest possible spatial resolution in the 10-30 micron range within a $200 million mission cost cap. The selected approach for the resulting Mid-Infrared Optimized Resolution Spacecraft (MIRORS) concept design utilizes a partially filled five meter aperture.

We present 1-5 micrometer moderate- and high-resolution infrared spectra of the ONeMg nova V1974 (Nova Cygni 1992) obtained at multiple epochs during an approximately 500 day period after outburst. During the first 80 days, the spectra exhibited continuum emission from thermal bremsstrahlung (free-free radiation) with prominent recombination line emission from hydrogen, helium, nitrogen, and oxygen. The measurement Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM) of these recombination lines suggests that the initial velocity of the ejecta was approximately equals 2400-3400 km/s. We estimate from the hydrogen recombination line ratios that the density of the ionized shell at this epoch was approximately equals 10(exp 9), with an effective electron temperature of approximately equals 5 x 10(exp 3) K. As the temporal evolution of the ejecta progressed, the hydrogen and helium lines diminished in intensity, and coronal lines of aluminum, calcium, magnesium, neon, and sulfur appeared by approximately day 80. The coronal line emission phase persisted for over 400 days. During this epoch, no significant dust formation occurred. We find that the ejecta of V1974 Cyg were overabundant in aluminum with respect to silicon by a factor of approximately equals 5 and in magnesium with respect to silicon by a factor of greater than or equal to 3 relative to the solar photosphere. Comparison of our observed overabundances with recent model predictions of elemental synthesis in ONeMg outbursts suggests that the accreted envelope on V1974 Cyg was close to solar composition and that the precursor ONeMg white dwarf had a mass of approximately equals 1 solar mass.

We present observations of the shock tracers H2 and SiO around the young stellar object IRAS 03282+3035. This unusual low-luminosity (L approximately = 2 solar luminosity) source drives a strong highly collimated CO outflow, and it is one of the youngest stellar objects known so far. The near-infrared H2 emission, tracing 2000 K gas, comes from extremely high velocity CO bullets along the axis of the blueshifted lobe of the outflow. The millimeter SiO emission, tracing roughly 100 K gas, arises from lower velocity material at the end of the outflow lobe. The lack of high-temperature and high-velocity gas at the end of the outflow lobe indicates there is no not bow shock at the outflow termination. In the context of current jet models this appears to rule out a bow shock driven by a steady state jet. Possible explanations for the structure include a time-dependent jet or a jet dominated by turbulent entrainment.

In a joint effort between engineers and scientists at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the California Institute of Technology, a near-infrared (0.8 - 2.6 micrometers) direct imaging system has been developed and integrated into the Caltech Palomar Observatory detector series. The camera system has been tested and operated in a science mode at the prime-focus (f/3.3) of the Hale 5-m Telescope. This paper outlines the system components and performance, including discussion of the detector linearity.

A NICMOS II array, a NIR (0.80 - 2.6 micron) imaging system, was integrated into the California Institute of Technology Palomar Observatory camera. The Palomar camera system which consists of six discrete subsystems including a focal plane, an electrical interface, data acquisition electronics, a dewar, dewar optics, and the software is described. The performance and calibration data for each subsystem are presented. Emphasis is placed on test data on the focal plane performance.

The theoretical fraction of a stellar wind's energy converted into the kinetic energy of an expanding swept-up shell is 20 percent in the classical theory of stellar wind bubbles. Observational estimates of this conversion factor based on the amount of ionized material in wind-swept shells about Wolf-Rayet stars generally yield results of 1 percent. If there is a substantial amount of neutral material in the shell, it will not be counted and the kinetic efficiency will be underestimated. Presented here is a dynamical estimate which accounts for this neutral material in deducing the kinetic efficiencies of stellar wind bubbles. Bubbles classified as wind-blown shells have kinetic efficiencies in line with theoretical expectations for energy-conserving evolution in a homogeneous medium. Ringlike nebulae have significantly lower efficiencies, probably because they have been 'poisoned' by the photoevaporation of clouds engulfed during evolution into a cloudy substrate.

Based on an asymmetry in the composition of the moon, a limit is established for the violation of the equity of passive and active gravitational mass. It is suggested that the 2-km offset between the moon's center of figure and center of mass imply an asymmetry in the distribution of Fe and Al, and that the Fe on one side and the Al on the other must attract another with equal force in order for the moon to follow the orbit predicted by classical mechanics. Based on laser ranging data and a model for the moon's interior, the ratios of active to passive mass for Fe and Al are found to be equal to a precision of 4 x 10 to the -12th.
