Abstract

Beta-carotene and cholesterol absorption in wild type and scavenger receptor class B type I (SR-BI) knockout mice and the uptake of these lipids in vitro were measured using brush border membrane (BBM) vesicles. The analysis shows that ezetimibe, a representative of a new class of drugs that inhibit intestinal cholesterol absorption, blocks SR-BI- and CD36-facilitated uptake of cholesterol into COS-7 cells.

Abstract

Changes in tissue-type plasminogen activation (TPA) expression in rats due to retinoids were investigated. This involved the characterization of TPA and plasminogen activator inhibitor-type 1 activity in plasma and on TPA concentrations of the lung, kidney, brain, heart and muscles. The relation of changes in plasma TPA functions to changes in tissue TPA synthesis was established.

Abstract

Vitamin A deficiency does not appear to contribute to HIV transmission during pregnancy. Researchers took blood samples during the third trimester from 95 pregnant HIV-infected women and measured the levels of vitamin A and several antioxidants such as vitamin E. The women and their infants were followed until the infant was 6 months old. At 6 months, 16 of the infants tested positive for HIV. However, there was no association between low vitamin A levels and HIV transmission.

Studies the role of carboxyl ester lipase (CEL) in hepatic retinoid (vitamin A) metabolism. Investigation of the uptake and hydrolysis of chylomicron (CM)-retinyl esters by rat hepatoma cells stably transfected with a rat CEL cDNA; Evidence that CEL deficiency does not affect hepatic retinoid metabolism and retinoid distribution throughout the body.
