Schwarzschild dynamical models are now regularly employed in large surveys of galaxies in the local and distant Universe to derive information on galaxies' intrinsic properties such as their orbital structure and their (dark matter and stellar) mass distribution. Comparing the internal orbital structures and mass distributions of galaxies in the distant Universe with simulations is key to understanding what physical processes are responsible for shaping galaxy properties. However it is first crucial to understand whether observationally derived properties are directly comparable with intrinsic ones in simulations. To assess this, we build Schwarzschild dynamical models for MUSE-like IFS cubes (constructed to be like those obtained by the MAGPI survey) of 75 galaxies at z ~ 0.3 from the Eagle simulations. We compare the true particle-derived properties with the galaxies' model-derived properties. In general, we find that the models can recover the true galaxy properties qualitatively well, with the exception of the enclosed dark matter, where we find a median offset of 48%, which is due to the assumed NFW profile not being able to reproduce the dark matter distribution in the inner region of the galaxies. We then compare our model-derived properties with Schwarzschild models-derived properties of observed MAGPI galaxies and find good agreement between MAGPI and Eagle: the majority of our galaxies (57%) have non-oblate shapes within 1 effective radius. More triaxial galaxies show higher fractions of hot orbits in their inner regions and tend to be more radially anisotropic., Comment: 22 pages. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Black holes have been found over a wide range of masses, from stellar remnants with masses of 5-150 solar masses (Msun), to those found at the centers of galaxies with $M>10^5$ Msun. However, only a few debated candidate black holes exist between 150 and $10^5$ Msun. Determining the population of these intermediate-mass black holes is an important step towards understanding supermassive black hole formation in the early universe. Several studies have claimed the detection of a central black hole in $\omega$ Centauri, the Milky Way's most massive globular cluster. However, these studies have been questioned due to the possible mass contribution of stellar mass black holes, their sensitivity to the cluster center, and the lack of fast-moving stars above the escape velocity. Here we report observations of seven fast-moving stars in the central 3 arcseconds (0.08 pc) of $\omega$ Centauri. The velocities of the fast-moving stars are significantly higher than the expected central escape velocity of the star cluster, so their presence can only be explained by being bound to a massive black hole. From the velocities alone, we can infer a firm lower limit of the black hole mass of $\sim$8,200 Msun, making this a compelling candidate for an intermediate-mass black hole in the local universe., Comment: 33 pages, 11 figures, and 2 tables. Bars drive gas inflow. As the gas flows inwards, shocks and shear occur along the bar dust lanes. Such shocks and shear can affect the star formation and change the gas properties. For four barred galaxies, we present H{\alpha} velocity gradient maps that highlight bar-driven shocks and shear using data from the PHANGS-MUSE and PHANGS-ALMA surveys which allow us to study bar kinematics in unprecedented detail. Velocity gradients are enhanced along the bar dust lanes, where shocks and shear are shown to occur in numerical simulations. Velocity gradient maps also efficiently pick up expanding shells around HII regions. We put pseudo slits on the regions where velocity gradients are enhanced and find that H{\alpha} and CO velocities jump up to ~170 km/s, even after removing the effects of circular motions due to the galaxy rotation. Enhanced velocity gradients either coincide with the peak of CO intensity along the bar dust lanes or are slightly offset from CO intensity peaks, depending on the objects. Using the BPT diagnostic, we identify the source of ionization on each spaxel and find that star formation is inhibited in the high velocity gradient regions of the bar, and the majority of those regions are classified as LINER or composite. This implies that star formation is inhibited where bar-driven shear and shocks are strong. Omega Centauri ($\omega$ Cen) is the most massive globular cluster of the Milky Way. It is thought to be the nucleus of an accreted dwarf galaxy because of its high mass and its complex stellar populations. To decipher its formation history and study its dynamics, we created the most comprehensive kinematic catalog for its inner region, by analyzing both archival and new Hubble Space Telescope (HST) data. Our catalog contains 1 395 781 proper-motion measurements out to the half-light radius of the cluster ($\sim$5.0') and down to $m_{F625W}\approx$25. The typical baseline for our proper-motion measurements is 20 years, leading to a median 1D proper motion precision of $\sim$11 $\mu$as yr$^{-1}$ for stars with $m_{F625W}\approx$18 mag, with even better precision ($\sim$6.6 $\mu$as yr$^{-1}$) achieved in the extensively observed centermost (r$<$1.5') region. In addition to our astrometric measurements, we also obtained precise HST photometry in seven filters spanning from the ultraviolet to the near-infrared. This allows detailed color-magnitude-diagram studies and to separate the multiple stellar populations of the cluster. In this work, we describe the data reduction used to obtain both the photometric and the proper-motion measurements. We also illustrate the creation and the content of our catalog, which is made publicly available. Finally, we present measurements of the plane-of-sky rotation of $\omega$ Cen in the previously unprobed inner few arcminutes and a precise measurement of the inclination $i = (43.9\pm1.3)^\circ$., Comment: 43 pages, 25 figures, 9 tables. We studied the effects of cluster environments on galactic structures by using the TNG50 cosmological simulation and observed galaxies in the Fornax cluster. We focused on galaxies with stellar masses of $10^{8-12}M_{\odot}$ at z=0 that reside in Fornax-like clusters with total masses of $M_{200c} = 10^{13.4-14.3}M_{\odot}$. We characterized the stellar structures by decomposing each galaxy into a dynamically cold disk and a hot non-disk component, and studied the evolution of both the stellar and gaseous constituents. In TNG50, we find that the cold gas is quickly removed when a galaxy falls into a Fornax-mass cluster. About 87\% of the galaxies have lost $80\%$ of their star-forming gas at 4 billion years after infall, with the remaining gas concentrating in the inner regions of the galaxy. The radius of the star-forming gaseous disk decreases to half its original size at 4 billion years after infall for 66\% of the galaxies. As a result, star formation in the extended dynamically cold disk sharply decreases, even though a low level of SF persists at the center for a few additional gigayears. This leads to a tight correlation between the average stellar age in the dynamically cold disk and the infall time of galaxies. Furthermore, the luminosity fraction of the dynamically cold disk in ancient infallers is only about 1/3 of that in recent infallers, controlling for galaxy stellar mass. This quantitatively agrees with what is observed in early-type galaxies in the Fornax cluster. Gas removal stops the possible growth of the disk, with gas removed earlier in galaxies that fell in earlier, and hence the cold-disk fraction is correlated with the infall time. Within the $\Lambda$CDM cosmology, dark matter haloes are expected to deviate from spherical symmetry. Constraining the halo shapes at large galactocentric distances is challenging due to the low density of luminous tracers. The well-studied early-type galaxy NGC 5128 (Centaurus A - CenA), has a large number of radial velocities for globular clusters (GCs) and planetary nebulae (PNe) of its extended stellar halo. In this work, we aim to determine the deviation from spherical symmetry of the dark matter halo of CenA at 5 $R_{\rm e}$ using its GCs as kinematic tracers. We used the largest photometric catalogue of GC candidates to accurately characterise the spatial distribution of the relaxed population and investigated the presence of non-relaxed structures in the kinematic catalogue of GCs using the relaxed point-symmetric velocity field as determined by the host's PNe population. We used anisotropic Jeans modelling under axisymmetric assumptions together with the Gaussian likelihood and GCs as discrete tracers. The gravitational potential is generated by flattened stellar and dark matter distributions. We leveraged different orbital properties of the blue and red GCs to model them separately. We find that discrete kinematics of the GCs are consistent with being drawn from an underlying relaxed velocity field determined from PNe. The best-fit parameters of the gravitational potential recovered from the blue and red GCs separately agree well and the joint results are: $M_{200} = 1.86^{1.61}_{-0.69}\times 10^{12}$ M$_\odot$, $M_\star/L_{\rm B} = 2.98^{+0.96}_{-0.78}$ and the flattening $q_{\rm DM} = 1.45^{+0.78}_{-0.53}$. Both GC populations show mild rotation, with red having a slightly stronger rotational signature and radially biased orbits, and blue GCs preferring negative velocity anisotropy. In the standard cosmological model, the assembly of galaxies is primarily driven by the growth of their host dark matter halos. At the center of these halos, however, baryonic processes take over, leading to the plethora of observed galaxy properties. The coupling between baryonic and dark matter physics is central to our understanding of galaxies and yet, it remains a challenge for theoretical models and observations. Here, we demonstrate that measured ages, metallicities, stellar angular momentum, morphology and star formation rates, correlate with both stellar and halo mass. Using dynamical modeling, we find that at fixed stellar mass, CALIFA galaxies become younger, more metal-poor and rotationally supported, have higher star formation rates and later-type morphologies as their total mass increases, with independent stellar and total masses measurements. These results indicate that the formation of galaxies and thus their baryonic properties do not vary with stellar mass alone, with halo mass also playing an important role., Comment: 14 pages, 5 Figures. Accretion disks surrounding stellar mass black holes (BHs) have been suggested as potential locations for the nucleosynthesis of light elements, which are our primary observational discriminant of multiple stellar populations within globular clusters. The population of enriched stars in globular clusters are enhanced in N14, Na23, and sometimes in Al27 and/or in K39. In this study, our aim is to investigate the feasibility of initiating nucleosynthesis for these four elements in BH accretion disks, considering various internal parameters such as the temperature of the gas and timescale of the accretion. To achieve this, we employed a 132-species reaction network. We used the slim disk model, suitable for the Super-Eddington mass accretion rate and for geometrically and optically thick disks. We explored the conditions related to the mass, mass accretion rate, viscosity, and radius of the BH-accretion disk system that would allow for the creation of N14, Na23, Al27, and K39 before the gas is accreted onto the central object. Our findings reveal that there is no region in the parameter space where the formation of Na23 can occur and only a very limited region where the formation of N14, Al27, and K39 is plausible. Specifically, this occurs for BHs with masses lower than 10 solar masses, with a preference toward even lower mass values and extremely low viscosity parameters ($\alpha <10^{-3}$). Such values are highly unlikely based on current observations of stellar mass BHs. However, such low mass BHs could actually exist in the early universe, as so-called primordial BHs. $\omega$ Centauri is considered the most massive globular cluster of the Milky Way and likely the former nuclear star cluster of a galaxy accreted by the Milky Way. It is speculated to contain an intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) from several dynamical models. However, uncertainties regarding the location of the cluster center or the retention of stellar remnants limit the robustness of the IMBH detections reported so far. In this paper, we derive and study the stellar kinematics from the highest-resolution spectroscopic data yet, using the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) in the narrow field mode (NFM) and wide field mode (WFM). Our exceptional data near the center reveal for the first time that stars within the inner 20" ($\sim$0.5 pc) counter-rotate relative to the bulk rotation of the cluster. Using this dataset, we measure the rotation and line-of-sight velocity dispersion (LOSVD) profile out to 120$''$ with different centers proposed in the literature. We find that the velocity dispersion profiles using different centers match well with those previously published. Based on the counter--rotation, we determine a kinematic center and look for any signs of an IMBH using the high-velocity stars close to the center. We do not find any significant outliers $>$60 km/s within the central 20$''$, consistent with no IMBH being present at the center of $\omega$ Centauri. The debate about the universality of the stellar initial mass function (IMF) revolves around two competing lines of evidence. While measurements in the Milky Way, an archetypal spiral galaxy, seem to support an invariant IMF, the observed properties of massive early-type galaxies (ETGs) favor an IMF somehow sensitive to the local star formation conditions. The fundamental methodological and physical differences between both approaches have hampered, however, a comprehensive understanding of IMF variations. We describe here an improved modelling scheme that allows for the first time consistent IMF measurements across stellar populations with different ages and complex star formation histories. Making use of the exquisite MUSE optical data from the TIMER survey and powered by the MILES stellar population models, we show the age, metallicity, [Mg/Fe], and IMF slope maps of the inner regions of NGC 3351, a spiral galaxy with a mass similar to that of the Milky Way. The measured IMF values in NGC3351 follow the expectations from a Milky Way-like IMF, although they simultaneously show systematic and spatially coherent variations, particularly for low-mass stars. In addition, our stellar population analysis reveals the presence of metal-poor and Mg-enhanced star-forming regions that appear to be predominantly enriched by the stellar ejecta of core-collapse supernovae. Our findings showcase therefore the potential of detailed studies of young stellar populations to better understand the early stages of galaxy evolution and, in particular, the origin of the observed IMF variations beyond and within the Milky Way., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures. We present a study on the star formation histories (SFHs) of galaxies covering the range $10^{4}$ < M$_{\star}$/M$_{\odot}$ < $10^{12}$, leveraging full spectral fitting algorithms. Our sample consists of 31 dwarf galaxies from the SAMI-Fornax Survey with stellar masses between $10^{7}$-$10^{9.5} M_{\odot}$, early-type galaxies from the ATLAS$^{3D}$ project with stellar masses between $10^{10}$-$10^{12} M_{\odot}$, and dwarf galaxies that are satellites of Andromeda and the Milky Way, with $10^{4}$ < M$_{\star}$/M$_{\odot}$ < $10^{8}$. We find that galaxies from $10^{7}$-$10^{8} M_{\odot}$ exhibit the smallest star formation rates (SFRs), while the SFR increase as we move down or up in mass. In this sense, we find that some $10^{5} M_{\odot}$ galaxies have cumulative SFHs that are comparable to those of $10^{12} M_{\odot}$ galaxies. Our study shows that the evolution of giant galaxies is primarily governed by their internal properties, with timescales that do not depend on their environmental location. In contrast, dwarf galaxies below $10^{8} M_{\odot}$ can be significantly affected in dense environments, such as the inner regions of a cluster, that severely quench the galaxies before the assembly of their 50% present-day mass. We find that, only dwarfs with stellar masses between $10^{7}$-$10^{9} M_{\odot}$ actively form stars nowadays, while less massive galaxies seem to remain unaffected by the environment due to the expulsion of most of their gas at an early stage in their evolution. Our study highlights and corroborates a critical threshold around $10^{8}-10^{9} M_{\odot}$ in galaxy evolution from previous studies, separating more massive galaxies minimally impacted by the environment from those less massive galaxies quenched by it., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The goal of this work is to probe the total mass distribution of early-type galaxies with globular clusters (GCs) as kinematic tracers, by constraining the parameters of the profile with a flexible modelling approach. To that end, we leverage the extended spatial distribution of GCs from the SLUGGS survey ($\langle R_{\rm GC,\ max} \rangle \sim 8R_{\rm e}$) in combination with discrete dynamical modelling. We use discrete Jeans anisotropic modelling in cylindrical coordinates to determine the velocity moments at the location of the GCs in our sample. We use a Bayesian framework to determine the best-fit parameters of the total mass density profile and orbital properties of the GC systems. We find that the orbital properties (anisotropy and rotation of the dispersion-dominated GC systems) minimally impact the measurements of the inner slope and enclosed mass, while a strong presence of dynamically-distinct subpopulations or low numbers of kinematic tracers can bias the results. Owing to the large spatial extent of the tracers our method is sensitive to the intrinsic inner slope of the total mass profile and we find $\overline{\alpha} = -1.88\pm 0.01$ for 12 galaxies with robust measurements. To compare our results with literature values we fit a single power-law profile to the resulting total mass density. In the radial range 0.1-4~$R_{\rm e}$ our measured slope has a value of $\langle \gamma_{\rm tot}\rangle = -2.22\pm0.14$ and is in good agreement with the literature., Comment: 17 pages, 13 Figures, 8 Tables, Accepted for publication in A&A

We employ a recently developed population-orbit superposition technique to simultaneously fit the stellar kinematic and age maps of 82 CALIFA spiral galaxies and obtain the ages of stars in different dynamical structures. We first evaluated the capabilities of this method on CALIFA-like mock data created from the Auriga simulations. The recovered mean ages of dynamically cold, warm, and hot components match the true values well, with an observational error of up to $20\%$ in the mock age maps. For CALIFA spiral galaxies, we find that the stellar ages of the cold, warm, and hot components all increase with the stellar mass of the galaxies, from $\overline{t_{\rm cold}}\sim2.2$ Gyr, $\overline{t_{\rm warm}}\sim2.3$ Gyr, and $\overline{t_{\rm hot}}\sim2.6$ Gyr for galaxies with stellar mass $M_*<10^{10}\,\rm M_{\odot}$, to $\overline{t_{\rm cold}}\sim4.0$ Gyr, $\overline{t_{\rm warm}}\sim5.1$ Gyr, and $\overline{t_{\rm hot}}\sim5.9$ Gyr for galaxies with $M_*>10^{11}\,\rm M_{\odot}$. About $80\%$ of the galaxies in our sample have $t_{\rm hot}>t_{\rm cold}$, and the mean values of $t_{\rm hot}-t_{\rm cold}$ also increase with stellar mass, from $0.7_{-0.2}^{+0.6}$ Gyr in low-mass galaxies ($10^{8.9}\,\rm M_{\odot}

The merger history of a galaxy is thought to be one of the major factors determining its internal dynamics, with galaxies having undergone different types or mergers (e.g. dry, minor or major mergers) predicted to show different dynamical properties. We study the instantaneous orbital distribution of galaxies in the Eagle simulation, colouring the orbits of the stellar particles by their stellar age, in order to understand whether stars form in particular orbits (e.g. in a thin or thick disc). We first show that Eagle reproduces well the observed stellar mass fractions in different stellar orbital families as a function of stellar mass and spin parameter at z = 0. We find that the youngest stars reside in a thin disc component that can extend to the very inner regions of galaxies, and that older stars have warmer orbits, with the oldest ones showing orbits consistent with both hot and counter-rotating classifications, which is consistent with the trend found in the Milky-Way and other disc galaxies. We also show that counter-rotating orbits trace galaxy mergers - in particular dry mergers, and that in the absence of mergers, counter-rotating orbits can also be born from highly misaligned gas accretion that leads to star formation., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS, 21 pages

We apply the barred Schwarzschild method developed by Tahmasebzadeh et al. (2022) to a barred S0 galaxy, NGC 4371, observed by IFU instruments from the TIMER and ATLAS3D projects. We construct the gravitational potential by combining a fixed black hole mass, a spherical dark matter halo, and stellar mass distribution deprojected from $3.6$ $\mu$m S$^4$G image considering an axisymmetric disk and a triaxial bar. We independently modelled kinematic data from TIMER and ATLAS3D. Both models fit the data remarkably well. We find a consistent bar pattern speed from the two sets of models with $\Omega_{\rm p} = 23.6 \pm 2.8 \hspace{.08cm} \mathrm{km \hspace{.04cm} s^{-1} \hspace{.04cm} kpc^{-1} }$ and $\Omega_{\rm p} = 22.4 \pm 3.5 \hspace{.08cm} \mathrm{km \hspace{.04cm} s^{-1} \hspace{.04cm} kpc^{-1} }$, respectively. The dimensionless bar rotation parameter is determined to be $ 1.88 \pm 0.37$, indicating a likely slow bar in NGC 4371. Additionally, our model predicts a high amount of dark matter within the bar region ($M_{\rm DM}/ M_{\rm total}$ $\sim 0.51 \pm 0.06$), which, aligned with the predictions of cosmological simulations, indicates that fast bars are generally found in baryon-dominated disks. Based on the best-fitting model, we further decompose the galaxy into multiple 3D orbital structures, including a BP/X bar, a classical bulge, a nuclear disk, and a main disk. The BP/X bar is not perfectly included in the input 3D density model, but BP/X-supporting orbits are picked through the fitting to the kinematic data. The mass-metallicity relation (MZR) represents one of the most important scaling relations in the context of galaxy evolution, comprising a positive correlation between stellar mass and metallicity (Z). The fundamental metallicity relation (FMR) introduces a new parameter, the star formation rate (SFR), in the dependence. While several studies found that Z is anti-correlated with the SFR at fixed mass, the validity of this statement has been questioned extensively and no widely-accepted consensus has been reached yet. With this work, we investigate the FMR in nine nearby, spatially-resolved, dwarf galaxies, using gas diagnostics on integral-field spectroscopic data of the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE), pushing such investigations to lower galaxy masses and higher resolutions. We find that both the MZR and FMR exhibit different behaviours within different star forming regions of the galaxies. We find that the SFR surface density - metallicity anti-correlation is tighter in the low-mass galaxies of our sample. For all the galaxies considered, we find a SFR surface density - stellar mass surface density correlation. We propose that the main reason behind these findings is connected to the accretion mechanisms of the gas fuelling star formation -- low-mass, metal-poor galaxies accrete pristine gas from the intergalactic medium, while in more massive and metal-enriched systems the gas responsible for star formation is recycled from previous star forming episodes., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Using MUSE data, we investigate the radial gradients of stellar population properties (namely age, [M/H], and the abundance ratio of $\alpha$ elements [$\alpha$/Fe]) for a sample of nine dwarf early-type (dE) galaxies with log(M$_{\star}$/M$_{\odot}$) $\sim$ 9.0 and an infall time onto the Virgo cluster of 2-3Gyr ago. We followed a similar approach as in Bidaran et al. (2022) to derive their stellar population properties and star formation histories (SFHs) through fitting observed spectral indices and full spectral fitting, respectively. We find that these nine dE galaxies have truncated [Mg/Fe]vs.[Fe/H] profiles than equally-massive Virgo dE galaxies with longer past infall times. Short profiles of three dE galaxies are the result of their intense star formation which has been quenched long before their accretion onto the Virgo cluster, possibly as a result of their group environment. In the remaining six dE galaxies, profiles mainly trace a recent episode of star burst within 0.4R$_{\rm e}$ which results in higher light-weighted [$\alpha$/Fe] values. The latter SFH peak can be due to ram pressure exerted by the Virgo cluster at the time of the accretion of the dE galaxies. Also, we show that younger, more metal-rich and less $\alpha$-enhanced stellar populations dominate their inner regions (i.e., < 0.4R$_{\rm e}$) resulting in mainly flat $\nabla_{\rm age}$, negative $\nabla_{\rm [M/H]}$ and positive $\nabla_{\rm [\alpha/Fe]}$. We find that with increasing log($\sigma_{\rm Re}$) of dE galaxies, $\nabla_{\rm age}$ and $\nabla_{\rm [\alpha/Fe]}$ flatten, and the latter correlation persists even after including early-type galaxies up to log($\sigma_{\rm Re}$ $\sim$ 2.5), possibly due to the more extended star formation activity in the inner regions of dEs, as opposed to more massive early-type galaxies., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, accepted in MNRAS

When galactic discs settle and become massive enough, they are able to form stellar bars. These non-axisymmetric structures induce shocks in the gas, causing it to flow to the centre where nuclear structures, such as nuclear discs and rings, are formed. Previous theoretical and observational studies have hinted at the co-evolution of bars and nuclear discs, suggesting that nuclear discs grow "inside-out", thereby proposing that smaller discs live in younger bars. Nevertheless, it remains unclear how the bar and the nuclear structures form and evolve with time. The smallest nuclear discs discovered to date tend to be larger than $\sim200~\rm{pc}$, even though some theoretical studies find that when nuclear discs form they can be much smaller. Using MUSE archival data, we report for the first time two extragalactic nuclear discs with radius sizes below $100~\rm{pc}$. Additionally, our estimations reveal the youngest bars found to date. We estimate that the bars in these galaxies formed $4.50^{+1.60}_{-1.10}\rm{(sys)}^{+1.00}_{-0.75}\rm{(stat)}$ and $0.7^{+2.60}\rm{(sys)}^{+0.05}_{-0.05}\rm{(stat)}~\rm{Gyr}$ ago, for NGC\,289 and NGC\,1566, respectively. This suggests that at least some disc galaxies in the Local Universe may still be dynamically settling. We use CEERS JWST/NIRCam imaging to measure rest-frame near-IR light profiles of $>$500 $M_\star>10^{10}~M_\odot$ galaxies in the redshift range $0.510^{11}~M_\odot$) quiescent galaxies between $z=0.5$ and $z=2.3$, again comparing $R_{\rm{opt}}$, \rmass~and \rmassd. Using VLT/MUSE integral-field spectroscopic data for the barred spiral galaxy NGC 1097, we explore techniques that can be used to search for extended coherent shocks that can drive gas inflows in centres of galaxies. Such shocks should appear as coherent velocity jumps in gas kinematic maps, but this appearance can be distorted by inaccurate extraction of the velocity values and dominated by the global rotational flow and local perturbations like stellar outflows. We include multiple components in the emission-line fits, which corrects the extracted velocity values and reveals emission associated with AGN outflows. We show that removal of the global rotational flow by subtracting the circular velocity of a fitted flat disk can produce artefacts that obscure signatures of the shocks in the residual velocities if the inner part of the disk is warped or if gas is moving around the centre on elongated (non-circular) trajectories. As an alternative, we propose a model-independent method which examines differences in the LOSVD moments of H$\alpha$ and [N II]$\lambda$6583. Cosmological simulations predict dark matter shapes that deviate from spherical symmetry. The exact shape depends on the prescription of the simulation and the interplay between dark matter and baryons. This signature is most pronounced in the diffuse galactic haloes that can be observationally probed with planetary nebulae and globular clusters (GCs). The kinematic observations of these halo tracers support intrinsic triaxial shape for the mass generating the gravitational potential. With discrete axisymmetric modelling of GCs as the halo tracers of NGC 5128 we investigate the overall mass distribution of this nearby giant elliptical galaxy. Our modelling approach constrains $c_{200}$, $(M/L)_{\star, B}$ and inclination. Triaxial dynamical models of massive galaxies observed in the ATLAS3D project can provide new insights into the complex evolutionary processes that shape galaxies. The ATLAS3D survey is ideal as the sample comprises a good mix of fast and slow rotators with vastly different mass assembly histories. We present a detailed dynamical study with our triaxial modelling code DYNAMITE, which models galaxies as a superposition of their stellar orbits. The models allow us to constrain the intrinsic shape of the stellar component, the distributions of the visible and invisible matter and the orbit distribution in these nearby early-type galaxies and to relate it with different evolutionary scenarios. We study the evolutionary path of the Fornax cluster galaxy NGC$~$1436, which is known to be currently transitioning from a spiral into a lenticular morphology. This galaxy hosts an inner star-forming disc and an outer quiescent disc, and we analyse data from the MeerKAT Fornax Survey, ALMA, and the Fornax3D survey to study the interstellar medium and the stellar populations of both disc components. Thanks to the combination of high resolution and sensitivity of the MeerKAT data, we find that the $\textrm{H}\scriptstyle\mathrm{I}$ is entirely confined within the inner star-forming disc, and that its kinematics is coincident with that of the CO. The cold gas disc is now well settled, which suggests that the galaxy has not been affected by any environmental interactions in the last $\sim1~$Gyr. The star formation history derived from the Fornax3D data shows that both the inner and outer disc experienced a burst of star formation $\sim5$ Gyr ago, followed by rapid quenching in the outer disc and by slow quenching in the inner disc, which continues forming stars to this day. We claim that NGC$~$1436 has begun to effectively interact with the cluster environment 5$~$Gyr ago, when a combination of gravitational and hydrodynamical interactions caused the temporary enhancement of the star-formation rate. Furthermore, due to the weaker gravitational binding $\textrm{H}\scriptstyle\mathrm{I}$ was stripped from the outer disc, causing its rapid quenching. Supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and nuclear star clusters (NSCs) co-exist in many galaxies. While the formation history of the black hole is essentially lost, NSCs preserve their evolutionary history imprinted onto their stellar populations and kinematics. Studying SMBHs and NSCs in tandem might help us to ultimately reveal the build-up of galaxy centres. In this study, we combine large-scale VLT/MUSE and high-resolution adaptive-optics-assisted VLT/SINFONI observations of the early-type galaxy FCC 47 with the goal being to assess the effect of a spatially (non-)variable initial mass function (IMF) on the determination of the mass of the putative SMBH in this galaxy. We achieve this by performing DYNAMITE Schwarzschild orbit-superposition modelling of the galaxy and its NSC. In order to properly take account of the stellar mass contribution to the galaxy potential, we create mass maps using a varying stellar mass-to-light ratio derived from single stellar population models with fixed and with spatially varying IMFs. Using the two mass maps, we estimate black hole masses of $(7.1^{+0.8}_{-1.1})\times 10^7\,M_{\odot}$ and $(4.4^{+1.2}_{-2.1}) \times 10^7\,M_{\odot}$ at $3\sigma$ signifance, respectively. Compared to models with constant stellar-mass-to-light ratio, the black hole masses decrease by 15% and 48%, respectively. Therefore, a varying IMF, both in its functional form and spatially across the galaxy, has a non-negligible effect on the SMBH mass estimate. Using very deep, high spectral resolution data from the SAMI Integral Field Spectrograph we study the stellar population properties of a sample of dwarf galaxies in the Fornax Cluster, down to a stellar mass of $10^{7}$ M$_{\odot}$, which has never been done outside the Local Group. We use full spectral fitting to obtain stellar population parameters. Adding massive galaxies from the ATLAS$^{3D}$ project, which we re-analysed, and the satellite galaxies of the Milky Way, we obtained a galaxy sample that covers the stellar mass range $10^{4}$ to $10^{12} M_{\odot}$. Using this large range we find that the mass - metallicity relation is not linear. We also find that the [$\alpha$/Fe]-stellar mass relation of the full sample shows a U-shape, with a minimum in [$\alpha$/Fe] for masses between $10^{9}-10^{10} M_{\odot}$. The relation between [$\alpha$/Fe] and stellar mass can be understood in the following way: When the faintest galaxies enter the cluster environment, a rapid burst of star formation is induced, after which the gas content is blown away by various quenching mechanisms. This fast star formation causes high [$\alpha$/Fe] values, like in the Galactic halo. More massive galaxies will manage to keep their gas longer and form several bursts of star formation, with lower [$\alpha$/Fe] as a result. For massive galaxies, stellar populations are regulated by internal processes, leading to [$\alpha$/Fe] increasing with mass. We confirm this model by showing that [$\alpha$/Fe] correlates with clustercentric distance in three nearby clusters, and also in the halo of the Milky Way., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. Most dynamical models of galaxies to date assume axisymmetry, which is not representative of a significant fraction of massive galaxies. We have built triaxial orbit-superposition Schwarzschild models of galaxies observed by the SAMI Galaxy Survey, in order to reconstruct their inner orbital structure and mass distribution. The sample consists of 153 passive galaxies with total stellar masses in the range $10^{9.5}$ to $10^{12} M_{\odot}$. We present an analysis of the internal structures and intrinsic properties of these galaxies as a function of their environment. We measure their environment using three proxies: central or satellite designation, halo mass and local $5^{th}$ nearest neighbour galaxy density. We find that although these intrinsic properties correlate most strongly with stellar mass, environment does play a secondary role: at fixed stellar mass, galaxies in the densest regions are more radially anisotropic. In addition, central galaxies, and galaxies in high local densities show lower values of edge-on spin parameter proxy \lam. We also find suggestions of a possible trend of the fractions of orbits with environment for lower-mass galaxies (between $10^{9.5}$ and $10^{11} M_{\odot}$) such that, at fixed stellar mass, galaxies in higher local densities and halo mass have higher fractions of hot orbits and lower fractions of warm orbits. We trace the evolution of the edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 3501, making use of its stellar populations extracted from deep integral-field spectroscopy MUSE observations. We present stellar kinematic and population maps, as well as the star formation history, of the south-western half of the galaxy. The derived maps of the stellar line-of-sight velocity and velocity dispersion are quite regular, show disc-like rotation, and no other structural component of the galaxy. However, maps of the stellar populations exhibit structures in the mass-weighted and light-weighted age, total metallicity and [Mg/Fe] abundance. These maps indicate that NGC 3501 is a young galaxy, consisting mostly of stars with ages between 2 to 8 Gyr. Also, they show a thicker more extended structure that is metal-poor and $\alpha$-rich, and another inner metal-rich and $\alpha$-poor one with smaller radial extension. While previous studies revealed that NGC 3501 shows only one morphological disc component in its vertical structure, we divided the galaxy into two regions: an inner metal-rich midplane and a metal-poor thicker envelope. Comparing the star formation history of the inner thinner metal-rich disc and the thicker metal-poor disc, we see that the metal-rich component evolved more steadily, while the metal-poor one experienced several bursts of star formation. We propose this spiral galaxy is being observed in an early evolutionary phase, with a thicker disc already in place and an inner thin disc in an early formation stage. So we are probably witnessing the birth of a future massive thin disc, continuously growing embedded in a preexisting thicker disc., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The epoch in which galactic discs settle is a major benchmark to test models of galaxy formation and evolution but is as yet largely unknown. Once discs settle and become self-gravitating enough, stellar bars are able to form; therefore, determining the ages of bars can shed light on the epoch of disc settling, and on the onset of secular evolution. Nevertheless, until now, timing when the bar formed has proven challenging. In this work, we present a new methodology for obtaining the bar age, using the star formation history of nuclear discs. Nuclear discs are rotation-supported structures, built by gas pushed to the centre via bar-induced torques, and their formation is thus coincident with bar formation. In particular, we use integral field spectroscopic (IFS) data from the TIMER survey to disentangle the star formation history of the nuclear disc from that of the underlying main disc, which enables us to more accurately determine when the nuclear disc forms. We demonstrate the methodology on the galaxy NGC 1433 -- which we find to host an old bar that is $8.0^{+1.6}_{-1.1}\rm{(sys)}^{+0.2}_{-0.5}\rm{(stat)}$ Gyr old -- and describe a number of tests carried out on both the observational data and numerical simulations. In addition, we present evidence that the nuclear disc of NGC 1433 grows in accordance with an inside-out formation scenario. This methodology is applicable to high-resolution IFS data of barred galaxies with nuclear discs, making it ideally suited for the TIMER survey sample. Barred structures are important in understanding galaxy evolution, but they were not included explicitly in most dynamical models for nearby galaxies due to their complicated morphological and kinematic properties. We modify the triaxial orbit-superposition Schwarzschild implementation by Van den Bosch et al. (2008) to include barred structures explicitly. The gravitational potential is a combination of a spherical dark matter halo and stellar mass; with the 3D stellar density distribution de-projected from the observed 2D image using a two-component de-projection method, including an axisymmetric disk and a triaxial barred bulge. We consider figure rotation of the galaxy with the bar pattern speed as a free parameter. We validate the method by applying it to a mock galaxy with IFU data created from an N-body simulation with a boxy/peanut or X-shaped bar. Our model fits the observed 2D surface density and all kinematic features well. The bar pattern speed is recovered well with a relative uncertainty smaller than 10%. Based on the internal stellar orbit distribution of the model, we decompose the galaxy into an X-shaped bar, a boxy bulge, a vertically extended structure and a disk, and demonstrate that our model recovers these structures generally well, similar to the true structures in the N-body simulation. Nuclear star clusters (NSCs) are massive star clusters found in all types of galaxies from dwarfs to massive galaxies. Recent studies show that while low-mass NSCs in dwarf galaxies ($M_\text{gal} < 10^{9} M_\odot$) form predominantly out of the merger of globular clusters (GCs), high-mass NSCs in massive galaxies have assembled most of their mass through central enriched star formation. So far, these results of a transition in the dominant NSC formation channel have been based on studies of early-type galaxies and massive late-type galaxies. Here, we present the first spectroscopic analysis of a sample of nine nucleated late-type dwarf galaxies with the aim of identifying the dominant NSC formation pathway. We use integral-field spectroscopy data obtained with the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) instrument to analyse the ages, metallicities, star formation histories, and star formation rates of the NSCs and their surroundings. Our sample includes galaxies with stellar masses $M_\text{gal} = 10^7 - 10^9 M_\odot$ and NSC masses $M_\text{NSC} = 6 \times 10^4 - 6 \times 10^{6} M_\odot$. Although all NSC spectra show emission lines, this emission is not always connected to star formation within the NSC, but rather to other regions along the line-of-sight. The NSC star formation histories reveal that metal-poor and old populations dominate the stellar populations in five NSCs, possibly stemming from the inspiral of GCs. The NSCs of the most massive galaxies in our sample show significant contributions from young and enriched populations that indicate additional mass growth through central star formation. Our results support previous findings of a transition in the dominant NSC formation channel with galaxy mass, showing that the NSCs in low-mass galaxies predominantly grow through the inspiral of GCs, while central star formation can contribute to NSC growth in more massive galaxies., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We present comprehensive multi-component dynamical models of M54 (NGC6715), the nuclear star cluster of the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy (Sgr), which is undergoing a tidal disruption in the Milky Way halo. Previous papers in the series used a large MUSE mosaic data set to identify multiple stellar populations in the system and study their kinematic differences. Here we use Jeans-based dynamical models that fit the population properties (mean age and metallicity), spatial distributions, and kinematics simultaneously. They provide a solid physical explanation to our previous findings. The population-dynamical models deliver a comprehensive view of the whole system, and allow us to disentangle the different stellar populations. We explore their dynamical interplay and confirm our previous findings about the build-up of Sgr's nuclear cluster via contributions from globular cluster stars, Sgr inner field stars, and in-situ star formation. We explore various parameterisations of the gravitational potential and show the importance of a radially varying mass-to-light ratio for the proper treatment of the mass profile. We find a total dynamical mass within M54's tidal radius ($\sim75$ pc) of $1.60\pm0.07\times10^6$ Msun in excellent agreement with $N$-body simulations. The metal-poor globular cluster stars contribute about $65\%$ of the total mass or $1.04\pm0.05\times10^6$ Msun. The metal-rich stars can be further divided into young and intermediate age populations that contribute $0.32\pm0.02\times10^6$ Msun ($20\%$) and $0.24\pm0.02\times10^6$ Msun ($15\%$), respectively. We explore the kinematic scaling relations of 38 dwarf galaxies in the Fornax Cluster using observations from the SAMI integral field spectrograph. We focus on the Fundamental Plane (FP), defined by the physical properties of the objects (scale length, surface brightness and velocity dispersion) and the Stellar Mass (Fundamental) Plane, where surface brightness is replaced by stellar mass, and investigate their dynamical-to-stellar-mass ratio. We confirm earlier results that the Fornax dEs are significantly offset above the FP defined by massive, hot stellar systems. For the Stellar Mass (Fundamental) Plane, which shows much lower scatter, we find that young and old dwarf galaxies lie at about the same distance from the plane, all with comparable scatter. We introduce the perpendicular deviation of dwarf galaxies from the Stellar Mass Plane defined by giant early-types as a robust estimate of their DM fraction, and find that the faintest dwarfs are systematically offset above the plane, implying that they have a higher dark matter fraction. This result is confirmed when estimating the dynamical mass of our dEs using a virial mass estimator, tracing the onset of dark matter domination in low mass stellar systems. We find that the position of our galaxies on the Stellar Mass FP agrees with the galaxies in the Local Group. Context. Blob detection is a common problem in astronomy. One example is in stellar population modelling, where the distribution of stellar ages and metallicities in a galaxy is inferred from observations. In this context, blobs may correspond to stars born in-situ versus those accreted from satellites, and the task of blob detection is to disentangle these components. A difficulty arises when the distributions come with significant uncertainties, as is the case for stellar population recoveries inferred from modelling spectra of unresolved stellar systems. There is currently no satisfactory method for blob detection with uncertainties. Aims. We introduce a method for uncertainty-aware blob detection developed in the context of stellar population modelling of integrated-light spectra of stellar systems. Methods. We develop theory and computational tools for an uncertainty-aware version of the classic Laplacian-of-Gaussians method for blob detection, which we call ULoG. This identifies significant blobs considering a variety of scales. As a prerequisite to apply ULoG to stellar population modelling, we introduce a method for efficient computation of uncertainties for spectral modelling. This method is based on the truncated Singular Value Decomposition and Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling (SVD-MCMC). Results. We apply the methods to data of the star cluster M54. We show that the SVD-MCMC inferences match those from standard MCMC, but are a factor 5-10 faster to compute. Using MUSE spectra, we investigate how pre-processing and accretion onto a galaxy cluster affect the integrated stellar population properties of dwarf early-type galaxies (dEs). We analyze a sample of nine dEs with stellar masses of $\rm \sim 10^9 \, M_\odot$, which were accreted ($\sim$ 2-3 Gyr ago) onto the Virgo cluster as members of a massive galaxy group. We derive their stellar population properties, namely age, metallicity ([M/H]), and the abundance ratio of $\alpha$ elements ([$\alpha$/Fe]), by fitting observed spectral indices with a robust, iterative procedure, and infer their star formation history (SFH) by means of full spectral fitting. We find that these nine dEs are more metal-poor (at the 2-3$\sigma$ level) and significantly more $\alpha$-enhanced than dEs in the Virgo and Coma clusters with similar stellar mass, cluster-centric distance, and infall time. Moreover, for six dEs, we find evidence for a recent episode of star formation during or right after the time of accretion onto Virgo. We interpret the high [$\alpha$/Fe] of our sample of dEs as the result of the previous exposure of these galaxies to an environment hostile to star formation, and/or the putative short burst of star formation they underwent after infall into Virgo. Our results suggest that the stellar population properties of low-mass galaxies may be the result of the combined effect of pre-processing in galaxy groups and environmental processes (such as ram-pressure triggering star formation) acting during the early phases of accretion onto a cluster., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

In this paper, we consider the problem of reconstructing a galaxy's stellar population-kinematic distribution function from optical integral field unit measurements. These quantities are connected via a high-dimensional integral equation. To solve this problem, we propose a projected Nesterov-Kaczmarz reconstruction (PNKR) method, which efficiently leverages the problem structure and incorporates physical prior information such as smoothness and non-negativity constraints. To test the performance of our reconstruction approach, we apply it to a dataset simulated from a known ground truth density, and validate it by comparing our recoveries to those obtained by the widely used pPXF software., Comment: 34 pages, 8 figures

In the past 15 years, the triaxial Schwarzschild orbit-superposition code by van den Bosch et al. (2008) has been widely applied to study the dynamics of galaxies. Recently, Quenneville et al. (2022) reported a bug in the orbit calculation of this code, specifically in the mirroring procedure that is used to speed up the computation. We have fixed the incorrect mirroring in DYNAMITE, which is the publicly-released successor of the triaxial Schwarzschild code by van den Bosch et al. (2008). In this study, we provide a thorough quantification of how this bug has affected the results of dynamical analyses performed with this code. We compare results obtained with the original and corrected versions of DYNAMITE, and discuss the differences in the phase-space distribution of a single orbit and in the global stellar orbit distribution, in the mass estimate of the central black hole in the highly triaxial galaxy PGC 46832, and in the measurement of intrinsic shape and enclosed mass for more than 50 galaxies. Focusing on the typical scientific applications of a Schwarzschild triaxial code, in all our tests we find that differences are negligible with respect to the statistical and systematic uncertainties. We conclude that previous results with the van den Bosch et al. (2008) triaxial Schwarzschild code are not significantly affected by the incorrect mirroring., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures. We report the discovery of ancient massive merger events in the early-type galaxies NGC 1380 and NGC 1427, members of the Fornax galaxy cluster. Both galaxies have been observed by the MUSE IFU instrument on the VLT, as part of the Fornax3D project. By fitting recently-developed population-orbital superposition models to the observed surface brightness as well as stellar kinematic, age, and metallicity maps, we obtain the stellar orbits, age and metallicity distributions of each galaxy. We then decompose each galaxy into multiple orbital-based components, including a dynamically hot inner stellar halo component which is identified as the relic of past massive mergers. By comparing to analogues from cosmological galaxy simulations, chiefly TNG50, we find that the formation of such a hot inner stellar halo requires the merger with a now-destroyed massive satellite galaxy of $3.7_{-1.5}^{+2.7} \times 10^{10}$ Msun (about $1/5$ of its current stellar mass) in the case of NGC 1380 and of $1.5_{-0.7}^{+1.6} \times10^{10}$ Msun (about $1/4$ of its current stellar mass) in the case of NGC 1427. Moreover, we infer that the last massive merger in NGC 1380 happened $\sim10$ Gyr ago based on the stellar age distribution of the re-grown dynamically cold disk, whereas the merger in NGC 1427 ended $t\lesssim 8$ Gyr ago based on the stellar populations in its hot inner stellar halo. The major merger event in NGC 1380 is the first one with both merger mass and merger time quantitatively inferred in a galaxy beyond the Local Volume. Dynamical models are crucial for uncovering the internal dynamics of galaxies, however, most of the results to date assume axisymmetry, which is not representative for a significant fraction of massive galaxies. Here, we build triaxial Schwarschild orbit-superposition models of galaxies taken from the SAMI Galaxy Survey, in order to reconstruct their inner orbital structure and mass distribution. The sample consists of 161 passive galaxies with total stellar masses in the range $10^{9.5}$ to $10^{12} M_{\odot}$. We find that the changes in internal structures within 1$R_{\rm e}$ are correlated with the total stellar mass of the individual galaxies. The majority of the galaxies in the sample ($73\% \pm 3\%$) are oblate, while $19\% \pm 3\%$ are mildly triaxial and $8\% \pm 2\%$ have triaxial/prolate shape. Galaxies with $\log M_{\star}/M_{\odot} > 10.50$ are more likely to be non-oblate. We find a mean dark matter fraction of $f_{\rm{DM}} = 0.28 \pm 0.20$, within 1$R_{\rm e}$. Galaxies with higher intrinsic ellipticity (flatter) are found to have more negative velocity anisotropy $\beta_r$ (tangential anisotropy). $\beta_r$ also shows an anti-correlation with the edge-on spin parameter \lam, so that $\beta_r$ decreases with increasing \lam. We see evidence of an increasing fraction of hot orbits with increasing stellar mass, while warm and cold orbits show a decreasing trend. We also find that galaxies with different ($V/\sigma$ - $h_3$) kinematic signatures have distinct combinations of orbits. We have used Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images, SAURON Integral Field Spectroscopy (IFS) and adaptative optics assisted Gemini NIFS near-infrared K-band IFS to map the stellar and gas distribution, excitation and kinematics of the inner few kpc of the nearby edge-on S0 galaxy NGC 4111. The HST images map its $\approx$ 450 pc diameter dusty polar ring, with an estimated gas mass $\ge10^7$ M$_\odot$. The NIFS datacube maps the inner 110 pc radius at $\approx$ 7 pc spatial resolution revealing a $\approx$ 220 pc diameter polar ring in hot ($2267\pm166$ K) molecular H$_2$ 1-0 S(1) gas embedded in the polar ring. The stellar velocity field shows disk-dominated kinematics along the galaxy plane both in the SAURON large-scale and in the NIFS nuclear-scale data. The large-scale [O III] $\lambda5007$ \AA velocity field shows a superposition of two disk kinematics: one similar to that of the stars and another along the polar ring, showing non-circular motions that seem to connect with the velocity field of the nuclear H$_2$ ring, whose kinematics indicate accelerated inflow to the nucleus. The estimated mass inflow rate is enough not only to feed an Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) but also to trigger circumnuclear star formation in the near future. We propose a scenario in which gas from the polar ring, which probably originated from the capture of a dwarf galaxy, is moving inwards and triggering an AGN, as supported by the local X-ray emission, which seems to be the source of the H$_2$ 1-0 S(1) excitation. The fact that we see neither near-UV nor Br$\gamma$ emission suggests that the nascent AGN is still deeply buried under the optically thick dust of the polar ring., Comment: 18 pages, 21 figures

Nuclear star clusters (NSCs) are massive star clusters found ubiquitously in the centres of galaxies, from the dwarf regime to massive ellipticals and spirals. The fraction of nucleated galaxies is as high as $>$ 90 % at $M_{\text{gal}} \sim 10^9 M_\odot$. However, how NSC formation mechanisms work in different regimes and what determines galaxy nucleation is still unclear. The dissipationless accretion of infalling globular clusters (GCs) and the in situ formation of stars directly at the galactic centre likely operate to grow NSCs in most galaxies; however, their efficiency has been difficult to assess observationally. Here, we provide, for the first time, a quantitative determination of the relative strength of these processes in the build-up of individual NSCs. Using a semi-analytical model of NSC formation based on the orbital evolution of inspiraling GCs, together with observed NSC and GC system properties, we derived the mass fraction of in situ born stars $f_\text{in, NSC}$ for 119 galaxies with masses from $3 \times 10^{7}$ to $3 \times 10^{11} M_\odot$, in the Local Volume, the Fornax, and Virgo galaxy clusters. Our analysis reveals that the NSC mass, as well as the ratio of NSC to the total GC system mass, are strong indicators of the dominant NSC formation channel, and not the total galaxy stellar mass as previously suggested. More massive NSCs formed predominantly via the in situ formation of stars ($f_\text{in, NSC} \sim 0.9$), while the lower-mass NSCs are expected to have formed predominantly through the merger of GCs ($f_\text{in, NSC} \sim 0.2$). We present a simple model for the host mass dependence of the galaxy nucleation fraction ($f_{nuc}$), the galaxy's nuclear star cluster (NSC) mass and the mass in its surviving globular clusters ($M_{GC,obs}$). Considering the mass and orbital evolution of a GC in a galaxy potential, we define a critical mass limit ($M_{GC,lim}$) above which a GC can simultaneously in-spiral to the galaxy centre due to dynamical friction and survive tidal dissolution, to build up the NSC. The analytic expression for this threshold mass allows us to model the nucleation fraction for populations of galaxies. We find that the slope and curvature of the initial galaxy size-mass relation is the most important factor (with the shape of the GC mass function a secondary effect) setting the fraction of galaxies that are nucleated at a given mass. The well defined skew-normal $f_{nuc} - M_{gal}$ observations in galaxy cluster populations are naturally reproduced in these models, provided there is an inflection in the {initial} size-mass relation at $M_{gal} \sim 10^{9.5} {\rm M_{\odot}}$. Our analytic model also predicts limits to the $M_{gal} - M_{GC,tot}$ and $M_{gal} - M_{NSC}$ relations which bound the scatter of the observational data. Moreoever, we illustrate how these scaling relations and $f_{nuc}$ vary if the star cluster formation efficiency, GC mass function, galaxy environment or galaxy size-mass relation are altered. Two key predictions of our model are: 1) galaxies with NSC masses greater than their GC system masses are more compact at fixed stellar mass, and 2) the fraction of nucleated galaxies at fixed galaxy mass is higher in denser environments. That a single model framework can reproduce both the NSC and GC scaling relations provides strong evidence that GC in-spiral is an important mechanism for NSC formation., Comment: 17 pages, 20 figures. Supermassive black hole masses (MBH) can dynamically be estimated with various methods and using different kinematic tracers. Different methods have only been cross-checked for a small number of galaxies and often show discrepancies. To understand these discrepancies, detailed cross-comparisons of additional galaxies are needed. We present the first part of our cross-comparison between stellar- and gas-based MBH estimates in the nearby fast-rotating early-type galaxy NGC 6958. The measurements presented here are based on ground-layer adaptive optics-assisted Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) science verification data at around 0.6 arcsec spatial resolution. The spatial resolution is a key ingredient for the measurement and we provide a Gaussian parametrisation of the adaptive optics-assisted point spread function (PSF) for various wavelengths. From the MUSE data, we extracted the stellar kinematics and constructed dynamical models. Using an axisymmetric Schwarzschild technique, we measured an MBH of (3.6+2.7-2.4)\times 10^8 Msun at 3\sigma significance taking kinematical and dynamical systematics (e.g.,radially-varying mass-to-light ratio) into account. We also added a dark halo, but our data does not allow to constrain the dark matter fraction. Adding dark matter with an abundance matching prior results in a 25 per cent more massive black hole. Jeans anisotropic models return MBH of (4.6+2.5-2.7) \times 10^8 Msun and (8.6+0.8-0.8) \times 10^8 Msun at 3\sigma confidence for spherical and cylindrical alignment of the velocity ellipsoid, respectively. In a follow-up study, we will compare the stellar-based MBH with those from cold and warm gas tracers, which will provide additional constraints for the MBH for NGC 6958, and insights into assumptions that lead to potential systematic uncertainty., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 21 pages, 18 Figures (Including Appendix). Galactic dynamical structures are fossil records of the assembly histories of galaxies. By analyzing the cosmological hydrodynamical simulation TNG50, we find that a dynamical structure that we call the "hot inner stellar halo," defined by stars on dynamically hot orbits with circularity $\lambda_z < 0.5$ at $3.5\,{\rm kpc}

The dynamical evolution of globular clusters (GCs) is tied to their binary population, as binaries segregate to the cluster centre, leading to an increased binary fraction in the core. This central overabundance of mainly hard binaries can serve as a source of energy for the cluster and has a significant effect on the observed kinematics, such as artificially increasing the observed line-of-sight velocity dispersion. We analyse the binary fractions and distributions of 95 simulated GCs, with and without an intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) in their centre. We show that an IMBH will not only halt the segregation of binaries towards the cluster centre, but also, directly and indirectly, disrupt the binaries that segregate, thus depleting binaries in the cluster core. We illustrate this by showing that clusters with an IMBH have fewer binaries and flatter radial binary distributions than their counterparts without one. These differences in the binary fraction and distribution provide an additional indicator for the presence of a central IMBH in GCs. In addition, we analyse the effects of the binary fraction on the line-of-sight velocity dispersion in the simulated GCs and find that binaries can cause an overestimation of up to $70\%$ of the velocity dispersion within the core radius. Using recent VLT/MUSE observations of NGC 3201 by Giesers et al. (2019), we find an overestimation of $32.2\pm7.8\%$ in the velocity dispersion that is consistent with the simulations and illustrates the importance of accurately accounting for the binary population when performing kinematic or dynamical analysis., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 14 pages, 12 figures. We investigate the dark matter halos of 256 star-forming disc-like galaxies at $z\sim 1$ using the KMOS redshift one spectroscopic survey (KROSS). This sample covers the redshifts $0.6 \leq z \leq 1.04$, effective radii $0.69 \leq R_e [\mathrm{kpc}] \leq 7.76$, and total stellar masses $8.7 \leq log(M_{\mathrm{star}} \ [\mathrm{M_\odot}]) \leq 11.32$. We present a mass modelling approach to study the rotation curves of these galaxies, which allow us to dynamically calculate the physical properties associated with the baryons and the dark matter halo. For the former we assume a Freeman disc, while for the latter we employ the NFW and the Burkert halo profiles, separately. At the end, we compare the results of both cases with state-of-the-art cosmological galaxy simulations (EAGLE, TNG100 and TNG50). We find that the {\em cored} dark matter halo emerged as the dominant quantity from a radius 1-3 times the effective radius. Its fraction to the total mass is in good agreement with the outcome of hydrodynamical galaxy simulations. Remarkably, we found that the dark matter core of $z\sim 1$ star-forming galaxies are smaller and denser than their local counterparts. We conclude that dark matter halos have gradually expanded over the past 6.5 Gyrs. That is, observations are capable of capturing the dark matter response to the baryonic processes (e.g. feedbacks), and thus giving us the first empirical evidence of {\em gravitational potential fluctuations} in the inner region of galaxies, which can be verified with deep surveys and future missions., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

The existence of massive galaxies lacking a classical bulge has often been proposed as a challenge to $\Lambda$CDM. However, recent simulations propose that a fraction of massive disc galaxies might have had very quiescent merger histories, and also that mergers do not necessarily build classical bulges. We test these ideas with deep MUSE observations of NGC 5746, a massive ($\sim 10^{11}$ M$_\odot$) edge-on disc galaxy with no classical bulge. We analyse its stellar kinematics and stellar populations, and infer that a massive and extended disc formed very early: 80% of the galaxy's stellar mass formed more than 10 Gyr ago. Most of the thick disc and the bar formed during that early phase. The bar drove gas towards the center and triggered the formation of the nuclear disc followed by the growth of a boxy/peanut-shaped bulge. Around $\sim$ 8 Gyr ago, a $\sim$1:10 merger happened, possibly on a low-inclination orbit. The satellite did not cause significant vertical heating, did not contribute to the growth of a classical bulge, and did not destroy the bar and the nuclear disc. It was however an important event for the galaxy: by depositing its stars throughout the whole galaxy it contributed $\sim 30$% of accreted stars to the thick disc. NGC 5746 thus did not completely escape mergers, but the only relatively recent significant merger did not damage the galaxy and did not create a classical bulge. The Fornax cluster provides an unparalleled opportunity to investigate in detail the formation and evolution of early-type galaxies in a dense environment. We aim at kinematically characterizing photometrically detected globular cluster (GC) candidates in the core of the cluster. We used the VLT/VIMOS spectroscopic data from the FVSS survey in the Fornax cluster, covering one square degree around the central massive galaxy NGC 1399. We confirmed a total of 777 GCs, almost doubling the previously detected GCs, using the same dataset by Pota et al. (2018). Combined with previous literature radial velocity measurements of GCs in Fornax, we compiled the most extensive spectroscopic GC sample of 2341 objects in this environment. We found that red GCs are mostly concentrated around major galaxies, while blue GCs are kinematically irregular and are widely spread throughout the core region of the cluster. The velocity dispersion profiles of blue and red GCs show a quite distinct behaviour. Blue GCs exhibit a sharp increase in the velocity dispersion profile from 250 to 400km/s within 5 arcminutes (29 kpc/1 reff of NGC 1399) from the central galaxy. The velocity dispersion profile of red GCs follows a constant value in between 200-300km/s until 8 arcminutes (46 kpc/1.6reff), and then rises to 350km/s at 10 arcminutes (58 kpc/2 reff). Beyond 10 arcminutes and out to 40 arcminutes (230 kpc/8 reff), blue and red GCs show a constant velocity dispersion of 300+/-50km/s, indicating that both GC populations are tracing the cluster potential. We have kinematically confirmed and characterized the previously photometrically discovered overdensities of intra-cluster GCs. Galaxy mergers are instrumental in dictating the final mass, structure, stellar populations, and kinematics of galaxies. Cosmological galaxy simulations indicate that the most massive galaxies at z=0 are dominated by high fractions of `ex-situ' stars, which formed first in distinct independent galaxies, and then subsequently merged into the host galaxy. Using spatially resolved MUSE spectroscopy we quantify and map the ex-situ stars in thirteen massive Early Type galaxies. We use full spectral fitting together with semi-analytic galaxy evolution models to isolate the signatures in the galaxies' light which are indicative of ex-situ populations. Using the large MUSE field of view we find that all galaxies display an increase in ex-situ fraction with radius, with massive and more extended galaxies showing a more rapid increase in radial ex-situ fraction, (reaching values between 30% to 100% at 2 effective radii) compared to less massive and more compact sources (reaching between 5% to 40% ex-situ fraction within the same radius). These results are in line with predictions from theory and simulations which suggest ex-situ fractions should increase significantly with radius at fixed mass for the most massive galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present a observational study of the dark matter fraction in 225 rotation supported star-forming galaxies at $z\approx 0.9$ having stellar mass range: $ 9.0 \leq log(M_* \ \mathrm{M_\odot}) \leq 11.0$ and star formation rate: $0.49 \leq log \left(SFR \ \mathrm{[M_{\odot}\ yr^{-1}]} \right) \leq 1.77$. This is a sub sample of KMOS redshift one spectroscopic survey (KROSS) previously studied by \citet{GS20}. The stellar masses ($M_*$) of these objects were previously estimated using mass-to-light ratios derived from fitting the spectral energy distribution of the galaxies. Star formation rates were derived from the H$_\alpha$ luminosities. The total gas masses ($M_{gas}$) are determined by scaling relations of molecular and atomic gas \citep[][respectively] {Tacconi2018, Lagos2011}. The dynamical masses ($M_{dyn}$) are directly derived from the rotation curves (RCs) at different scale lengths (effective radius: $R_e$, $\sim 2 \ R_e$ and $\sim 3 \ R_e$) and then the dark matter fractions ($f_{ DM }=1-M_{bar}/M_{dyn}$) at these radii are calculated. We report that at $z\sim 1$ only a small fraction ($\sim 5\%$) of our sample has a low ($< 20\%$) DM fraction within $\sim$ 2-3 $R_e$. The majority ($> 72\%$) of SFGs in our sample have dark matter dominated outer disks ($\sim 5-10$ kpc) in agreement with local SFGs. Moreover, we find a large scatter in the fraction of dark matter at a given stellar mass (or circular velocity) with respect to local SFGs, suggesting that galaxies at $z \sim 1$, a) span a wide range of stages in the formation of stellar disks, b) have diverse DM halo properties coupled with baryons., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A (in press)

We present multi-tracer dynamical models of the low mass ($M_{*} \sim 10^{7}$), isolated dwarf irregular galaxy WLM in order to simultaneously constrain the inner slope of the dark matter (DM) halo density profile ($\gamma$) and flattening ($q_\mathrm{DM}$), and the stellar orbital anisotropy ($\beta_{z}, \beta_{r}$). For the first time, we show how jointly constraining the mass distribution from the HI gas rotation curve and solving the Jeans' equations with discrete stellar kinematics leads to a factor of $\sim2$ reduction in the uncertainties on $\gamma$. The mass-anisotropy degeneracy is also partially broken, leading to reductions on uncertainty by $\sim 30\%$ on $M_\mathrm{vir}$ (and $\sim 70\%$ at the half-light radius) and $\sim 25\%$ on anisotropy. Our inferred value of $\gamma = 0.3 \pm 0.1$ is robust to the halo geometry, and in excellent agreement with predictions of stellar feedback driven DM core creation. The derived prolate geometry of the DM halo with $q_\mathrm{DM} = 2 \pm 1$ is consistent with $\Lambda$CDM simulations of dwarf galaxy halos. While self-interacting DM (SIDM) models with $\sigma/m_{X} \sim 0.6$ can reproduce this cored DM profile, the interaction events may sphericalise the halo. The simultaneously cored and prolate DM halo may therefore present a challenge for SIDM. Finally we find that the radial profile of stellar anisotropy in WLM ($\beta_{r}$) follows a nearly identical trend of increasing tangential anisotropy to the classical dSphs, Fornax and Sculptor. Given WLM's orbital history, this result may call into question whether such anisotropy is a consequence of tidal stripping in only one pericentric passage or if it instead is a feature of the largely self-similar formation and evolutionary pathways for some dwarf galaxies., Comment: arxiv version, published in MNRAS. 23 pages, 14 figures
