This study supplements the gender determination methodology based on the relationship of some morphological indicators in Mystus albolineatus. A total of 229 specimens were caught by trawl nets at Cai Rang – Can Tho and Long Phu – Soc Trang in four months from April to July 2023. After collection, the samples were transferred to the laboratory to determine the total length (TL), standard length (SL), eye diameter (ED), eye distance (DE), body height (BH), head length (HL), and mouth diameter (MD) before surgery to determine the sex based on the gonad. The results showed that the TL-SL regression relationship could be used to determine the sex of this fish. Besides, TL-BH and TL-MD growth relations were relatively balanced in females versus males. In addition, based on SL, DE, and MD, it was also possible to determine whether the sampling time was the wet or dry seasons. These findings form the basis for the initial study of the biological characteristics of this fish in the Mekong Delta.

Abstract Background and Objectives Cardiovascular implantable electronic devices can detect atrial high‐rate episodes (AHREs). However, the predictors of clinically relevant AHREs have not been well identified. Methods This prospective study included 145 patients (median age 64.5 ± 16.4 years, 53.1% females) without atrial fibrillation (AF) from December 2020 to January 2022. AHREs were defined as a programmed atrial detection rate >190 beats per minute. Cox regression analysis was used to identify the risk factors of AHREs. Results During 6 months of follow‐up, AHREs occurred in 30.3% of patients. This study assessed the fluctuations of two key indexes - Fulton and Clark indexes - in evaluating the nutritional status and health of Mystus albolineatus at two different sampling sites within the Hau River basin, Mekong Delta. A total of 597 specimens comprising 307 females and 290 males were collected from Cai Rang (Can Tho) and Long Phu (Soc Trang) from January to December (2023). The results indicated that both indexes were not influenced by sex or sampling site but varied significantly according to season and month. As childhood cancer treatments have improved to include new and innovative agents, the need for more advanced monitoring of their long-term effects and related research has increased. This has resulted in a need for evidence-based research methodologies for the longitudinal care of childhood cancer patients treated with targeted agents and immunotherapies. The rationale for this pilot study was to determine the feasibility and acceptability of a data capture methodology for pediatric, adolescent, and young adult cancer patients treated with targeted agents and immunotherapy as there is little research to inform this delivery of care. Data were collected from thirty-two patients and two providers for descriptive statistics and thematic analyses. Feasibility was characterized by expected participant attrition. Key drivers of acceptability were (1) providers’ language and clarity of communication and (2) convenient participation requirements. Long-term follow-up research practices developed with input from key stakeholders, including patients, caregivers, and providers, can lead to acceptable and feasible research protocols that optimize successful participant recruitment. These evidence-based research practices can result in high participant satisfaction and can be implemented as program development initiatives across centers caring for childhood cancer survivors.

Integrating new technologies such as Virtual Reality (VR) can contribute to increasing efficiency in several areas relevant to society. VR can be applied in various contexts and has the potential to improve mnemonic processes and memory performance. However, the specific conditions under which VR is more beneficial than conventional learning methods remain unclear. To further investigate the value of VR for mnemonic processing, participants performed a memory task under three different conditions. For that task, they were presented with rules regarding the spatial arrangement of building blocks with a written text or a video in 2D on a screen or in 3D/360° with a head-mounted display. Following the learning session, memory performance was measured by a recognition test involving a multiple-choice questionnaire, in which participants had to mark the correct arrangement of building blocks, and a construction test, in which they had to arrange five different building blocks according to the rules learned. Additionally, participants had to arrange 38 building blocks according to the rules in a free recall test the following day. Surprisingly, results revealed no superiority effect for learning in VR. Instead, learning the rules with the text yielded the best memory performance results, indicating that prior experience with conventional learning methods facilitates declarative knowledge acquisition. Considering previous findings regarding cognitive processing in VR, our results suggest that in passive learning, processing the more salient and personally relevant virtual stimuli in the surrounding VR environment requires more attentional resources. Therefore, VR impairs focusing on the relevant declarative information and impedes the transfer of the learned knowledge to different contexts. When considering to implement VR, the value to the particular domain and specific learning task should be taken into consideration: For learning basic declarative information without actively involving the students, conventional learning methods seem sufficient and more efficient for mnemonic processing compared to new technologies.

In this age of fierce competitions, customer retention is one of the most important tasks for many companies. Many previous works proposed models to predict customer churn based on various machine learning techniques. In this study, we proposed an advanced churn prediction model using kernel Support Vector Machines (SVM) algorithm for a telecom company. Baseline SVM models were initially built to find out the most suitable kernel types and will be used to make comparison with other approaches. Dimension reduction strategies such as Sequential Forward Selection (SFS) and Sequential Backward Selection (SBS) were applied to the dataset to find out the most important features. Furthermore, resampling techniques to deal with imbalanced data such as Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique Tomek Link (SMOTE Tomek) and Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique ENN (SMOTE ENN) were used on the dataset. Using the above-mentioned techniques, we have obtained better results compared to those obtained from previous works, we achieved an F1-score and accuracy of 99% and 98.9% respectively.

Background: There is emphasis on timely administration of thrombolysis and clot retrieval but not antithrombotic therapy within 48 h for ischemic stroke (frequency of 64% in Australia and 97% in North America). We planned to assess the time metrics and variables associated with delaying antithrombotics (antiplatelet and anticoagulant therapy) administration.Methods: This was a retrospective study at Monash Health over 12 months in 2015. We plotted the cumulative event and mapped the key drivers (dimensionless variable Shapley value/SV) of antithrombotics.Results: There were 42 patients with transient ischemic attack/TIA and 483 with ischemic stroke [mean age was 71.8 ± 15.4; 56.0% male; nil by mouth (NBM) 74.5 and 49.3% of patients received “stat” (immediate and one off) dose antithrombotics]. The median time to imaging for the patients who did not have stroke code activated was 2.3 h (IQR 1.4–3.7), from imaging to dysphagia screen was 14.6 h (IQR 6.2–20.3), and from stopping NBM to antithrombotics was 1.7 h (IQR 0–16.5). TIA patients received antithrombotics earlier than those with ischemic stroke (90.5 vs. 86.5%, p = 0.01). Significant variables in regression analysis for time to antithrombotics were time to dysphagia screen (β 0.20 ± 0.03, SV = 3.2), nasogastric tube (β 19.8 ± 5.9, SV = −0.20), Alteplase (β 8.6 ± 3.6, SV = −1.9), stat dose antithrombotic (β −18.9 ± 2.9, SV = −10.8) and stroke code (β −5.9 ± 2.5, SV = 2.8). The partial correlation network showed that the time to antithrombotics increased with delay in dysphagia screen (coefficient = 0.33) and decreased if “stat” dose of antithrombotics was given (coefficient = −0.32).Conclusion: The proportion of patients receiving antithrombotics within 48 h was higher than previously reported in Australia but remained lower than the standard achieved in North American hospitals. Our process map and network analysis show avenues to shorten the time to antithrombotic.

Evidence suggests that the 3&apos; single-stranded telomere end can assemble into a lasso-like t-loop configuration.sup.1,2, which has been proposed to safeguard chromosome ends from being recognized as DNA double-strand breaks.sup.2. Mechanisms must also exist to transiently disassemble t-loops to allow accurate telomere replication and to permit telomerase access to the 3&apos; end to solve the end-replication problem. However, the regulation and physiological importance of t-loops in the protection of telomere ends remains unknown. Here we identify a CDK phosphorylation site in the shelterin subunit at Ser365 of TRF2, whose dephosphorylation in S phase by the PP6R3 phosphatase provides a narrow window during which the RTEL1 helicase can transiently access and unwind t-loops to facilitate telomere replication. Re-phosphorylation of TRF2 at Ser365 outside of S phase is required to release RTEL1 from telomeres, which not only protects t-loops from promiscuous unwinding and inappropriate activation of ATM, but also counteracts replication conflicts at DNA secondary structures that arise within telomeres and across the genome. Hence, a phospho-switch in TRF2 coordinates the assembly and disassembly of t-loops during the cell cycle, which protects telomeres from replication stress and an unscheduled DNA damage response. A phospho-switch is identified in the shelterin subunit TRF2 that regulates transient recruitment of the RTEL1 helicase to, and release from, telomeres, and provides a narrow window during which RTEL1 can unwind t-loops to facilitate telomere replication.

The integrated aquaculture-seaweed system has been identified as a bio-mitigation strategy to overcome environmental damage, improve the efficiency of nutrient use, maintain good water quality, and ensure the system’s sustainability. This study was conducted to determine the appropriate density of sea grape (Caulerpa lentillifera) in polyculture with whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) in the same culture tank. Five treatments were randomly designed in triplicate tanks where shrimp was monocultured (without sea grape) as a control treatment and four polyculture treatments with different seaweed density levels (0.5, 1, 1.5, and 2 kg m−3) for 56 days. The results showed that polyculture of shrimp and sea grape significantly reduced the concentrations of total ammonia nitrogen (TAN), nitrite (NO2−), nitrate (NO3−), and phosphate (PO43−) in the rearing tanks and significantly improved (p < 0.05) the growth rate (6.67–6.76% day−1), survival (73.3–78.5%), and production of shrimp (3.44–3.87 kg m−3) compared to monoculture (6.24% day−1, 54.8%, and 2.02 kg m−3, respectively). Applying shrimp and sea grape polyculture at a density of 1 kg m−3 provided a relatively better shrimp performance and feed conversion ratio than other seaweed densities, although not significantly different among polyculture treatments. The findings suggested that sea grape could be used at densities of 0.5–2 kg m−3 in polyculture with whiteleg shrimp, of which 1 kg m−3 resulted in higher production and feed efficiency.

Atraumatic convexity subarachnoid haemorrhage describes spontaneous bleeding into the convexities of the brain sulci without parenchymal involvement. Its many causes include reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome, cerebral sinus venous thrombosis, posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome and (in older people) cerebral amyloid angiopathy. We describe the clinical and radiological features of non-traumatic convexity subarachnoid haemorrhage with its various presentations, causes, treatments and prognoses, and use clinical vignettes to highlight important clinical points and pitfalls. Background and aimThe availability and access of hospital administrative data [coding for Charlson comorbidity index (CCI)] in large data form has resulted in a surge of interest in using this information to predict mortality from stroke. The aims of this study were to determine the minimum clinical data set to be included in models for predicting disability after ischemic stroke adjusting for CCI and clinical variables and to evaluate the impact of CCI on prediction of outcome.MethodWe leverage anonymized clinical trial data in the Virtual International Stroke Trials Archive. This repository contains prospective data on stroke severity and outcome. The inclusion criteria were patients with available stroke severity score such as National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), imaging data, and outcome disability score such as 90-day Rankin Scale. We calculate CCI based on comorbidity data in this data set. For logistic regression, we used these calibration statistics: Nagelkerke generalised R2 and Brier score; and for discrimination we used: area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUC) and integrated discrimination improvement (IDI). The IDI was used to evaluate improvement in disability prediction above baseline model containing age, sex, and CCI.ResultsThe clinical data among 5,206 patients (55% males) were as follows: mean age 69 ± 13 years, CCI 4.2 ± 0.8, and median NIHSS of 12 (IQR 8, 17) on admission and 9 (IQR 5, 15) at 24 h. In Model 2, adding admission NIHSS to the baseline model improved AUC from 0.67 (95% CI 0.65–0.68) to 0.79 (95% CI 0.78–0.81). In Model 3, adding 24-h NIHSS to the baseline model resulted in substantial improvement in AUC to 0.90 (95% CI 0.89–0.91) and increased IDI by 0.23 (95% CI 0.22–0.24). Adding the variable recombinant tissue plasminogen activator did not result in a further change in AUC or IDI to this regression model. In Model 3, the variable NIHSS at 24 h explains 87.3% of the variance of Model 3, follow by age (8.5%), comorbidity (3.7%), and male sex (0.5%).ConclusionOur results suggest that prediction of disability after ischemic stroke should at least include 24-h NIHSS and age. The variable CCI is less important for prediction of disability in this data set.

In 2002, we implemented a 4-year HIV prevention intervention for injection drug users (IDUs) in Lang Son Province, Vietnam, and Ning Ming County, Guangxi Province, China, a cross-border region seriously affected by inter-twined epidemics of heroin injection and HIV infection. The interventions involve peer education on HIV risk reduction and provision of new needles/syringes through direct distribution and pharmacy vouchers. We consider this to be a structural intervention in which risk reduction information and sterile injection equipment are diffused through the IDU populations and not limited to those who actually interact with peer educators. The evaluation of structural interventions poses complex methodological challenges. The evaluation of our interventions relies primarily on cross-sectional surveys (interviews and HIV testing) of samples of IDUs selected using a combination of targeted cluster and snowball methods. We consider this to be an appropriate, albeit imperfect, design given the study context. This paper presents analyses of data from the IDU surveys conducted just prior to implementation of the interventions and 24 months thereafter. The cross-border interventions have reached large proportions of the IDUs in the project sites, drug-related HIV risk behaviors have declined in frequency, and HIV prevalence among IDUs has been stable in China and declined in Vietnam over the 24 months since the interventions were implemented. Attribution of these positive trends to the interventions must be qualified in light of possible sampling biases and the absence of control groups. However, we believe that the structural interventions implemented by the cross-border project have played a role in stabilizing HIV prevalence among IDUs two years after they were initiated. Evidence of further diffusion of the interventions among IDUs and continued stability or decline of HIV prevalence would strengthen this case. (Contains 6 tables and 1 figure.)

Rhinovirus (RV) infections account for approximately two thirds of all virus-induced asthma exacerbations and often result in an impaired response to β2 agonist therapy. Using an in vitro model of RV infection, we investigated the mechanisms underlying RV-induced β2 adrenoceptor desensitization in primary human airway smooth muscle cells (ASMC). RV infection of primary human bronchial epithelial cells (HBEC) for 24 hours produced conditioned medium that caused β2 adrenoceptor desensitization on ASMCs without an effect on ASMCs viability. Less than 3 kDa size fractionation together with trypsin digestion of RV-induced conditioned medium did not prevent β2 adrenoceptor desensitization, suggesting it could potentially be mediated by a small peptide or lipid. RV infection of BECs, ASMCs and fibroblasts produced prostaglandins, of which PGE2, PGF2α and PGI2 had the ability to cause β2 adrenoceptor desensitization on ASMCs. RV-induced conditioned medium from HBECs depleted of PGE2 did not prevent ASMC β2 adrenoceptor desensitization; however this medium induced PGE2 from ASMCs, suggesting that autocrine prostaglandin production may be responsible. Using inhibitors of cyclooxygenase and prostaglandin receptor antagonists, we found that β2 adrenoceptor desensitization was mediated through ASMC derived COX-2 induced prostaglandins. Since ASMC prostaglandin production is unlikely to be caused by RV-induced epithelial derived proteins or lipids we next investigated activation of toll-like receptors (TLR) by viral RNA. The combination of TLR agonists poly I:C and imiquimod induced PGE2 and β2 adrenoceptor desensitization on ASMC as did the RNA extracted from RV-induced conditioned medium. Viral RNA but not epithelial RNA caused β2 adrenoceptor desensitization confirming that viral RNA and not endogenous human RNA was responsible. It was deduced that the mechanism by which β2 adrenoceptor desensitization occurs was by pattern recognition receptor activation of COX-2 induced prostaglandins.

An analysis of the correlates of HIV status among samples of injection drug users (IDUs) in border region of Southern China and Northern Vietnam is presented and they are interviewed and tested for HIV antibody just before the start of a peer-based HIV prevention intervention in this border region. Logistic regression analysis suggests that among Chinese IDUs, border related factors and younger age are the best predictors of HIV positivity.
