Abstract

Craniofacial Superimposition involves the superimposition of an image of a skull with a number of ante-mortem face images of an individual and the analysis of their morphological correspondence. Despite being used for one century, it is not yet a mature and fully accepted technique due to the absence of solid scientific approaches, significant reliability studies, and international standards. In this paper we present a comprehensive experimentation on the limitations of Craniofacial Superimposition as a forensic identification technique. The study involves different experiments over more than 1 Million comparisons performed by a landmark-based automatic 3D/2D superimposition method. Abstract

Facial landmarks are employed in many research areas such as facial recognition, craniofacial identification, age and sex estimation among the most important. In the forensic field, the focus is on the analysis of a particular set of facial landmarks, defined as cephalometric landmarks. Previous works demonstrated that the descriptive adequacy of these anatomical references for an indirect application (photo-anthropometric description) increased the marking precision of these points, contributing to a greater reliability of these analyzes. However, most of them are performed manually and all of them are subjectivity inherent to the expert examiners. In this sense, the purpose of this work is the development and validation of automatic techniques to detect cephalometric landmarks from digital images of frontal faces in forensic field. The presented approach uses a combination of computer vision and image processing techniques within a supervised learning procedures. The proposed methodology obtains similar precision to a group of human manual cephalometric reference markers and result to be more accurate against others state-of-the-art facial landmark detection frameworks. It achieves a normalized mean distance (in pixel) error of 0.014, similar to the mean inter-expert dispersion (0.009) and clearly better than other automatic approaches also analyzed along of this work (0.026 and 0.101)., Comment: 24 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

Objectives: Over the past few years, several methods have been proposed to improve the accuracy of age estimation in infants with a focus on dental development as a reliable marker. However, traditional approaches have limitations in efficiently combining information from different teeth and features. In order to address these challenges, this article presents a study on age estimation in infants with Machine Learning (ML) techniques, using deciduous teeth. Materials and Methods: The involved dataset comprises 114 infant skeletons from the Granada osteological collection of identified infants, aged between 5 months of gestation and 3 years of age. The samples consist of features such as the maximum length and mineralization and alveolar stages of teeth. For the purpose of designing a method capable of combining all the information available from each individual, a Multilayer Perceptron model is proposed, one of the most popular artificial neural networks. This model has been validated using the leave‐one‐out experimental validation protocol. Through different groups of experiments, the study examines the informativeness of the aforementioned features, individually and in combination. Results: The results indicate that the fusion of different variables allows for more accurate age estimates (RMSE = 66 days) than when variables are analyzed separately (RMSE = 101 days). Additionally, the study demonstrates the benefits of involving multiple teeth, which significantly reduces the RMSE compared to a single tooth. Discussion: This article underlines the clear advantages of ML‐based methods, emphasizing their potential to improve the accuracy and robustness when estimating the age of infants. Abstract

Human and animal vector-borne diseases, particularly mosquito-borne diseases, are emerging or re-emerging worldwide. Six Aedes invasive mosquito (AIM) species were introduced to Europe since the 1970s: Aedes aegypti, Ae. albopictus, Ae. japonicus, Ae. koreicus, Ae. atropalpus and Ae. triseriatus. Here, we report the results of AIMSurv2020, the first pan-European surveillance effort for AIMs. Implemented by 42 volunteer teams from 24 countries. And presented in the form of a dataset named “AIMSurv Aedes Invasive Mosquito species harmonized surveillance in Europe. AIM-COST Action. Project ID: CA17108”. AIMSurv2020 harmonizes field surveillance methodologies for sampling different AIMs life stages, frequency and minimum length of sampling period, and data reporting. Data include minimum requirements for sample types and recommended requirements for those teams with more resources. Data are published as a Darwin Core archive in the Global Biodiversity Information Facility- Spain, comprising a core file with 19,130 records (EventID) and an occurrences file with 19,743 records (OccurrenceID). AIM species recorded in AIMSurv2020 were Ae. albopictus, Ae. japonicus and Ae. koreicus, as well as native mosquito species. Abstract

This randomized controlled trial will evaluate the effects of storm drain modification on populations of Aedes and Culex mosquitos in Barcelona, Spain. Two groups of drains will be compared: (i) modified and (ii) non-modified storm drains. After the implementation of the modifications, trained teams will collect mosquitos in the drains and compare the numbers between the groups. This trial does not involve human subjects or present any significant health risks to the community. The storm drain modification is part of a previously scheduled program by The Agència de Salut Pública de Barcelona and the intervention involves the random selection of drains to be modified from an existing pool of eligible drains followed by the endpoint measurements and analysis.

Abstract

Human and animal vector-borne diseases, particularly mosquito-borne diseases, are emerging or re-emerging worldwide. Six Aedes invasive mosquito (AIM) species were introduced to Europe since the 1970s: Aedes aegypti, Ae. albopictus, Ae. japonicus, Ae. koreicus, Ae. atropalpus and Ae. triseriatus. Here, we report the results of AIMSurv2020, the first pan-European surveillance effort for AIMs. Implemented by 42 volunteer teams from 24 countries. And presented in the form of a dataset named “AIMSurv Aedes Invasive Mosquito species harmonized surveillance in Europe. AIM-COST Action. Project ID: CA17108”. AIMSurv2020 harmonizes field surveillance methodologies for sampling different AIMs life stages, frequency and minimum length of sampling period, and data reporting. Data include minimum requirements for sample types and recommended requirements for those teams with more resources. Data are published as a Darwin Core archive in the Global Biodiversity Information Facility- Spain, comprising a core file with 19,130 records (EventID) and an occurrences file with 19,743 records (OccurrenceID). AIM species recorded in AIMSurv2020 were Ae. albopictus, Ae. japonicus and Ae. koreicus, as well as native mosquito species.

Abstract

The Mosquito Alert dataset includes occurrence records of adult mosquitoes collected worldwide in 2014–2020 through Mosquito Alert, a citizen science system for investigating and managing disease-carrying mosquitoes. Records are linked to citizen science-submitted photographs and validated by entomologists to determine the presence of five targeted European mosquito vectors: Aedes albopictus, Ae. aegypti, Ae. japonicus, Ae. koreicus, and Culex pipiens. Most records are from Spain, reflecting Spanish national and regional funding, but since autumn 2020 substantial records from other European countries are included, thanks to volunteer entomologists coordinated by the AIM-COST Action, and to technological developments to increase scalability. Among other applications, the Mosquito Alert dataset will help develop citizen science-based early warning systems for mosquito-borne disease risk. It can also be reused for modelling vector exposure risk, or to train machine-learning detection and classification routines on the linked images, to assist with data validation and establishing automated alert systems.

Abstract

Altres ajuts: Agència de Salut Pública de Barcelona. The most advanced organizations are decentralized, collaborative and adaptive. This gives them the ability to manage complex situations. Laloux calls these organizations Teal. The aim of this manuscript is to describe the process of implementation of the Teal management model in the Agència de Salut Pública de Barcelona (ASPB). There is a triple opportunity for innovation at the ASPB: political change towards a progressive government, the organisation is in a moment of massive renewal of its staff and there is a generational change that facilitates understanding the Laloux model, and the managers have a technical background with a long history in the organisation, which makes them aware of the organisation's capabilities. The process starts with the involvement of a small group of people (Llavor group) and it is then expanded (Planter group). As well as discussing the bases of the Laloux model, six working groups are formed (How to organise more effective meetings, Physical spaces, Spaces for reflection / trust, Time bank, Annual ASPB staff day, and Space for listening to the voice of ASPB workers) and informative workshops are organised for the whole organisation in which 67 people participated. In total, some 120 people from the organisation have participated in Planter group activities. The success of the first initiatives should help to ensure that the values and principles cultivated go beyond the frontiers of the projects to become a generalised style of management. Abstract

El Proyecto tiene como objetivo generar oportunidades de comercialización justa y estable para los productores de Estaquinha, así como proveer servicios agropecuarios y de transformación de alimentos a la comunidad rural de la zona. Se espera contribuir al desarrollo económico y social de la región, impactando negativamente en la migración campo-ciudad. También se busca contribuir a la sustentabilidad financiera de la Asociación mozambicana ESMABAMA a través de una reinversión de parte de los beneficios en el sector agropecuario de la organización. La base del Proyecto es establecer una relación comercial entre los productores agrícolas de la zona y una empresa social gestionada por ESMABAMA dedicada a la comercialización de granos básicos, de tal forma que las partes incrementen sus ingresos a los largo del año. Es decir, se espera que el Proyecto contribuya a asegurar un ingreso a los campesinos y a estabilizar los precios de los granos básicos de la zona al gestionar un almacén que se dedique a la comercialización de alimentos no perecederos fuera de temporada. La relación comercial se ratificará a través de la firma por ambas partes de unos contratos comerciales en los cuales se indicará la producción que será comprada por la empresa y el precio que pagará por esa. Objetivo de esta empresa es también la de ofrecer servicios a la comunidad del puesto administrativo de Estaquinha poniendo en funcionamiento un molino y una descascadora de grano que dará servicio a las familias de la zona. En el ámbito más estrictamente agrícola, la empresa donará servicios a aquellos agricultores con los cuales trabajará a través de la estipulación de un contrato. Este prevé la donación de algunos insumos y la asistencia técnica. Más en general, para los agricultores del distrito la empresa pondrá en marcha una tienda que venda productos agropecuarios en la localidad de Estaquinha y alquilará los servicios de un tractor.

Abstract

Search algorithms are often compared by the optimization speed achieved on some sets of cost functions. Here some properties of algorithms' optimization speed are introduced and discussed. In particular, we show that determining whether a set of cost functions F admits a search algorithm having given optimization speed is an NP-complete problem. Further, we derive an explicit formula to calculate the best achievable optimization speed when F is closed under permutation. Finally, we show that the optimization speed achieved by some well-know optimization techniques can be much worse than the best theoretical value, at least on some sets of optimization benchmarks. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.
