The past two decades have seen an accumulation of theoretical and empirical evidence for the interlinkages between human health and well-being, biodiversity and ecosystem services, and agriculture. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the devastating impacts that an emerging pathogen, of animal origin, can have on human societies and economies. A number of scholars have called for the wider adoption of “One Health integrated approaches” to better prevent, and respond to, the threats of emerging zoonotic diseases. However, there are theoretical and practical challenges that have precluded the full development and practical implementation of this approach. Whilst integrated approaches to health are increasingly adopting a social-ecological system framework (SES), the lack of clarity in framing the key concept of resilience in health contexts remains a major barrier to its implementation by scientists and practitioners. We propose an operational framework, based on a transdisciplinary definition of Socio-Ecological System Health (SESH) that explicitly links health and ecosystem management with the resilience of SES, and the adaptive capacity of the actors and agents within SES, to prevent and cope with emerging health and environmental risks. We focus on agricultural transitions that play a critical role in disease emergence and biodiversity conservation, to illustrate the proposed participatory framework to frame and co-design SESH interventions. Finally, we highlight critical changes that are needed from researchers, policy makers and donors, in order to engage communities and other stakeholders involved in the management of their own health and that of the underpinning ecosystems.

In semi-arid savannas, the availability of surface water constrains movements and space-use of wild animals. To accurately model their movements in relation to water selection at a landscape scale, innovative methods have to be developed to i) better discriminate water bodies in space while characterizing their seasonal occurrences and ii) integrate this information in a spatially-explicit model to simulate animal movements according to surface water availability. In this study, we propose to combine satellite remote sensing (SRS) and spatial modelling in the case of the African buffalo (Syncerus caffer caffer) movements at the periphery of Hwange National Park (Zimbabwe). An existing classification method of satellite Sentinel-2 time-series images has been adapted to produce monthly surface water maps at 10 meters spatial resolution. The resulting water maps have then been integrated into a spatialized mechanistic movement model based on a collective motion of self-propelled individuals to simulate buffalo movements in response to surface water. The use of spectral indices derived from Sentinel-2 in combination with the short-wave infrared (SWIR) band in a Random Forest (RF) classifier provided robust results with a mean Kappa index, over the time series, of 0.87 (max = 0.98, min = 0.65). The results highlighted strong space and time variabilities of water availability in the study area. The mechanistic movement model showed a positive and significant correlation between observations/simulations movements and space-use of buffalo's herds (Spearman r = 0.69, p-value < 10 e-114) despite overestimating the presence of buffalo individuals at proximity of the surface water.

Fission–fusion dynamics allow animals to manage costs and benefits of group living by adjusting group size. The degree of intraspecific variation in fission–fusion dynamics across the geographical range is poorly known. During 2008–2016, 38 adult female Cape buffalo were equipped with GPS collars in three populations located in different protected areas (Gonarezhou National Park and Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe; Kruger National Park, South Africa) to investigate the patterns and environmental drivers of fission–fusion dynamics among populations. We estimated home range overlap and fission and fusion events between Cape buffalo dyads. We investigated the temporal dynamics of both events at daily and seasonal scales and examined the influence of habitat and distance to water on event location. Fission–fusion dynamics were generally consistent across populations: Fission and fusion periods lasted on average between less than one day and three days. However, we found seasonal differences in the underlying patterns of fission and fusion, which point out the likely influence of resource availability and distribution in time on group dynamics: During the wet season, Cape buffalo split and associated more frequently and were in the same or in a different subgroup for shorter periods. Cape buffalo subgroups were more likely to merge than to split in open areas located near water, but overall vegetation and distance to water were very poor predictors of where fission and fusion events occurred. This study is one of the first to quantify fission–fusion dynamics in a single species across several populations with a common methodology, thus robustly questioning the behavioral flexibility of fission–fusion dynamics among environments.

La mobilité du bétail joue un rôle central dans le fonctionnement des agroécosystèmes, mais peut participer à leur dégradation. Evaluer l'impact de la mobilité des animaux sur la durabilité des agroécosystèmes nécessite de disposer d'outils et de méthodes de terrain accessibles permettant d'appréhender cette mobilité pour la diversité des systèmes d'élevage. Des typologies décrivant la diversité des systèmes d'élevage d'Asie sur Sud-Est ont été réalisées à partir de méthodes classiques (enquêtes sur la mobilité, cartographie mentales des paysages, enquête sur les pratiques d'affouragement). Nous proposons de construire des typologies des systèmes d'élevage comparables en mobilisant un système embarqué équipé d'un capteur GPS adapté aux milieux pastoraux tropicaux. En 2018, nous avons testé cette méthode sur des bovins de deux sites contrastés d'Asie du Sud-Est (Salakpra, nord Thaïlande et Quài Nưa, nord-ouest Vietnam). La typologie proposée est basée sur deux indicateurs quantitatifs : La distribution d'utilisation couplée à une carte d'occupation des sols permet de décrire la probabilité d'utilisation d'un habitat par un animal pendant une période donnée. La distance à la ferme (ou à un site de parcage nocturne) permet de quantifier les pratiques de conduite au pâturage. La méthode proposée de mobiliser les données GPS pour établir une typologie des systèmes d'élevage semble adaptée à différents contextes agrosylvopastoraux d'Asie du Sud-Est et permet de construire des typologies des systèmes d'élevage comparables à celles préétablies. L'utilisation de capteurs embarqués pourrait également soutenir la gestion territoriale du cheptel par les acteurs locaux afin de limiter les conflits d'usage et d'améliorer la gestion des ressources naturelles pastorales et non pastorales.

Interfaces between protected areas and their peripheries in southern Africa are subject to interactions between wildlife and livestock that vary in frequency and intensity. In these areas, the juxtaposition between production and conservation land uses in a context of increasing anthropisation can create issues associated with human-wildlife coexistence and raises concerns for biodiversity conservation, local development and livelihoods. This literature review aimed at addressing the need to consolidate and gather in one article current knowledge on potential uses of satellite remote sensing (SRS) products by movement ecologists to investigate the sympatry of wildlife/domestic ungulates in savanna interface environments. A keyword querying process of peer reviewed scientific paper, thesis and books has been implemented to identify references that (1) characterize the main environmental drivers impacting buffalo (Syncerus caffer caffer) and cattle (Bos taurus & Bos indicus) movements in southern Africa environments, (2) describe the SRS contribution to discriminate and characterize these drivers. In total, 327 references have been selected and analyzed. Surface water, precipitation, landcover and fire emerged as key drivers impacting the buffalo and cattle movements. These environmental drivers can be efficiently characterized by SRS, mainly through open-access SRS products and standard image processing methods. Applying SRS to better understand buffalo and cattle movements in semi-arid environments provides an operational framework that could be replicated in other type of interface where different wild and domestic species interact. There is, however, a need for animal movement ecologists to reinforce their knowledge of remote sensing and/or to increase pluridisciplinary collaborations.

Deux principaux systèmes d'élevage bovin cohabitent dans le bassin de la Donga au nord du Bénin : l'élevage semi-sédentaire et l'élevage mobile. Ce bassin, situé dans la zone agroécologique subhumide de l'Afrique de l'Ouest, a subi ces dernières décennies deux changements majeurs : a) une augmentation des besoins en produits animaux et b) l'expansion des terres cultivées qui entraîne une diminution de l'accès aux ressources fourragères et à l'eau, une plus grande mobilité des troupeaux, et des conflits plus fréquents entre cultivateurs et éleveurs mobiles. Face à ces contraintes, les pouvoirs publics privilégient la sédentarisation des éleveurs mobiles. L'élevage mobile étant pourvoyeur de jeunes animaux aux élevages semi-sédentaires, la dynamique de sédentarisation crée une incertitude quant à l'approvisionnement de la région en bétail bovin et en viande par un élevage semi-sédentaire qui deviendrait largement majoritaire. Pour appréhender la question de besoins croissants en produits animaux, la production de bétail a été simulée afin d'évaluer l'effet d'une incitation des pouvoirs publics à la sédentarisation des éleveurs mobiles. Les productivités numérique et en viande ont été simulées sous différentes hypothèses d'amélioration des performances zootechniques des élevages semi-sédentaires. L'ensemble des scénarios ont été construits à partir de l'hypothèse de l'augmentation du cheptel semi-sédentaire directement liée à la sédentarisation d'une partie des éleveurs mobiles. Une simulation obtenue à l'aide du modèle de projection démographique Dynmod suggère que la sédentarisation des éleveurs mobiles romprait la complémentarité locale entre les systèmes d'élevage et conduirait à une perte de production de viande. En outre, aucun des scénarios d'amélioration explorés ne suffirait à compenser la perte de production de viande résultant de la politique de sédentarisation. The main effect of climate change on livestock production systems in the Mediterranean area is to induce changes in feed resource availability. In face of constraining and changing environmental conditions, the challenge is to find practical solutions for herd management to minimize farmer's risk. These solutions should be good enough in terms of efficiency (E), to ensure sufficient income, and good enough in terms of resilience (R), to ensure farm sustainability. The objective of the ADAPT-HERD project is to develop simulation tools capable of evaluating the consequences of management strategies at the herd level, under contrasting and varying environments (Egypt, France, Spain and Tunisia). Our approach considers that biological adaptive capacities of small ruminants can be fully integrated within management strategies to improve R and E by: i) using reproduction practices that provide the best match between herd demand and feed supply; ii) managing groups of animals based on their adaptive capacities (targeting interventions) and iii) managing herd demography to adapt animal numbers to future feed resources. The project will implement data acquisition at animal level (fine-grained experiments on adaptive capacities and phenotyping of local breeds) and at production system level (herd management, feed resource, climate and market conditions). Data will be combined and used in computer simulations to explore different climate change scenarios and management strategies and evaluate their effects on herd R and E. Interfacing modelling tools will be a key aspect of the project, fostering knowledge exchange and collaboration, especially with ongoing projects focusing on genetic selection and breeding solutions to improve R&E in small ruminants.

Vegetation mapping of protected areas is a cornerstone of conservation worldwide. Established in 1928 and covering over 1.4 million hectares, Hwange National Park (HNP) is the largest natural reserve in Zimbabwe. In 1993, the sole comprehensive map of its vegetation to date was produced and since then it has been used in numerous research and conservation endeavours. Over the last two decades, however, the park's vegetation changed, safari areas and forest reserves were created at its edge and high-positional accuracy data on a suite of species were collected. To tend to contemporary mapping needs, in this article, we present the 2013–2014 vegetation structure map of HNP and its surroundings. It was produced by supervised classification of Landsat-8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) images, indices derived from these and the Landsat Tree Cover Continuous Field product. Its accuracy was assessed statistically using samples collected from high-resolution satellite imagery and basic ancillary field data. Of its total pixels, 83.2% were correctly classified. Mean omission and commission error were, respectively, 0.82 (0.74–0.90) and 0.82 (0.72–0.89), and this similarity held on a per class basis, indicating reliable area estimates. It was produced using only freely available imagery and software. Conservation implications: In addition to providing researchers and conservationists working within and around HNP with an updated vegetation map, aiming at an even broader audience, we provide a step-by-step approach for using modern freely available imagery and software for cost-effectively mapping HNP in future or other protected savannas across Africa.

The coexistence of protected areas and neighbouring communal areas in Southern Africa is jeopardised by negative interactions between wildlife and villagers and their livestock. The African buffalo (Syncerus caffer) has often been blamed for a significant proportion of the “human-wildlife conflicts”, mainly through the transmission of pathogens to cattle, competition with livestock for grazing and water resources, and also occasionally involved in crop destruction and threat to people's physical integrity. We present the results of several multidisciplinary studies carried out since 2008 on buffalo-cattle interactions at the periphery of Gonarezhou National Park, Hwange National Park and adjacent communal lands in Zimbabwe. Movements of sympatric buffalo and cattle have been described at various scales using GPS collars, revealing daily/seasonal patterns and occasional events of long-distance dispersal of young buffalo females. Habitat preferences, especially for open grassland habitats, were similar between the two species, and surface availability was the key determinant of their distributions. Overall, buffalo appeared to avoid cattle, although their ranges overlapped more extensively with cattle in Gonarezhou area than in Hwange. We defined contacts between buffalo and cattle using spatial-temporal windows compatible with the transmission of parasites and pathogens through direct contact or indirect contact with contaminated environment. Results of serological tests for various pathogens and analysis of their relationship with buffalo/cattle contacts rates confirmed the likely role of reservoir played by buffalo for several diseases (FMD, theileriosis…), whereas the results were inconclusive for several others (brucellosis, tick-borne diseases, BTB…). Socio-economic surveys carried out in the study areas highlighted the importance of livestock keeping for small-scale farmers' livelihoods.
