In this work, we devise a model for estimating UV and optical line emission (i.e., CIII] $1909$A, H$\beta$, [OIII] $5007$A, H$\alpha$, [NII] $6583$A) tracing HII regions in the interstellar medium (ISM) of galaxies at $z\sim4-6$ from the ALMA Large Programme ALPINE. The aim is to investigate the impact of binary stars in the stellar population along with an abrupt quenching in the Star Formation History (SFH) on line emission. This is crucial for understanding the ISM's properties in early galaxies and identifying new star formation tracers in high-$z$ galaxies. The model simulates HII+Photodissociation Region (PDR) complexes through radiative transfer in 1D slabs, characterized by gas density ($n$), ionisation parameter ($U$), and metallicity ($Z$). It considers: (a) heating from star formation (SF), simulated with Starburst99 and BPASS to quantify binary stars impact; (b) constant, exponentially declining, and quenched SFH scenarios. For each galaxy, we select theoretical ratios from CLOUDY models between [CII] line emission, tracing PDRs, and nebular lines from HII regions, using these to derive expected optical/UV lines from observed [CII]. We find binary stars strongly impact line emission post-quenching, keeping UV photon flux higher for longer, maintaining free electron temperature and ionised column density in HII regions up to 5 Myr after quenching. We constrain ISM properties of our subsample, finding a low ionisation parameter $\log U{\approx}-3.8\pm 0.2$ and moderate/high densities $\log(n/\rm cm^{-3}){\approx}2.9\pm 0.6$. Finally, we derive UV/optical line luminosities-SFR relations for different burstiness parameters ($k_s$). In the fiducial BPASS model, relations show negligible SFH dependence but depend on $k_s$, while in the SB99 case, dependence is on SFH. We aim at characterizing the X-ray-to-optical/near-infrared broad-band emission of luminous QSOs in the first Gyr of cosmic evolution to understand whether they exhibit differences compared to the lower-\textit{z} QSO population. Our goal is also to provide for these objects a reliable and uniform catalog of SED fitting derivable properties such as bolometric and monochromatic luminosities, Eddington ratios, dust extinction, strength of the hot dust emission. We characterize the X-ray/UV emission of each QSO using average SEDs from luminous Type 1 sources and calculate bolometric and monochromatic luminosities. Finally we construct a mean SED extending from the X-rays to the NIR bands. We find that the UV-optical emission of these QSOs can be modelled with templates of $z\sim$2 luminous QSOs. We observe that the bolometric luminosities derived adopting some bolometric corrections at 3000 \AA\ ($BC_{3000\text{\AA}}$) largely used in the literature are slightly overestimated by 0.13 dex as they also include reprocessed IR emission. We estimate a revised value, i.e. $BC_{3000\text{\AA}}=3.3 $ which can be used for deriving $L_\text{bol}$ in \textit{z} $\geq$ 6 QSOs. A sub-sample of 11 QSOs is provided with rest-frame NIR photometry, showing a broad range of hot dust emission strength, with two sources exhibiting low levels of emission. Despite potential observational biases arising from non-uniform photometric coverage and selection biases, we produce a X-ray-to-NIR mean SED for QSOs at \textit{z} $\gtrsim$ 6, revealing a good match with templates of lower-redshift, luminous QSOs up to the UV-optical range, with a slightly enhanced contribution from hot dust in the NIR.

One of the main open questions in the field of luminous ($L_{\rm bol}>10^{47}\,\rm erg\,s^{-1}$) quasars (QSOs) at $z \gtrsim 6$ is the rapid formation ($< 1\,$Gyr) of their supermassive black holes (SMBHs). For this work we analysed the relation between the X-ray properties and other properties describing the physics and growth of both the accretion disc and the SMBH in QSOs at the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). The sample consists of 21 $z>6$ QSOs, which includes 16 sources from the rapidly grown QSOs from the HYPERION sample and five other luminous QSOs with available high-quality archival X-ray data. We discovered a strong and statistically significant ($>3\sigma$) relation between the X-ray continuum photon index ($\Gamma$) and the $\rm C\,IV$ disc wind velocity ($v_{\rm C\,IV}$) in $z>6$ luminous QSOs, whereby the higher the $v_{\rm C\,IV}$, the steeper the $\Gamma$. This relation suggests a link between the disc-corona configuration and the kinematics of disc winds. Furthermore, we find evidence at $>2-3\sigma$ level that $\Gamma$ and $v_{\rm C\,IV}$ are correlated to the growth rate history of the SMBH. Although additional data are needed to confirm it, this result may suggest that, in luminous $z>6$ QSOs, the SMBH predominantly grows via fast accretion rather than via initial high seed BH mass., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Galaxy evolution emerges from the balance between cosmic gas accretion, fueling star formation, and supernova (SN) feedback, regulating the metal enrichment. Hence, the stellar mass ($M_*$) - gas metallicity relation (MZR) is key to understand the physics of galaxies. High-quality JWST data enable accurate measurements of the MZR up to redshift z=10. Our aims are to understand the observed MZR, its connection with the star formation rate (SFR), the role played by SFR stochasticity, and how it is regulated by SN feedback. We compare the MZR from the JADES, CEERS, and UNCOVER surveys, which comprise about 180 galaxies at $z=3-10$ with $10^6

Galaxy protoclusters are sites of rapid growth, with a high density of massive galaxies driving elevated rates of star formation and accretion onto supermassive black holes. Here, we present new JWST/NIRSpec IFU observations of the J1000+0234 group at $z=4.54$, a dense region of a protocluster hosting a massive, dusty star forming galaxy (DSFG). The new data reveal two extended, high-equivalent-width (EW$_0>1000\r{A}$) [O III] nebulae that appear at both sides of the DSFG along its minor axis (namely O3-N and O3-S). On one hand, the spectrum of O3-N shows a broad and blueshifted component with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 1300 km/s, suggesting an outflow origin. On the other hand, O3-S stretches over 8.6 kpc, and has a velocity gradient that spans 800 km/s, but shows no evidence of a broad component. However, both sources seem to be powered by an active galactic nucleus (AGN), so we classified them as extended emission-line regions (EELRs). The strongest evidence comes from the detection of the high-ionization [Ne V] $\lambda 3427$ line toward O3-N, which paired with the lack of hard X-rays implies an obscuring column density above the Compton-thick regime. The [Ne V] line is not detected in O3-S, but we measure a He II $\lambda 4687$/H$\beta$=0.25, which is well above the expectation for star formation. Despite the remarkable alignment of O3-N and O3-S with two radio sources, we do not find evidence of shocks from a radio jet that could be powering the EELRs. We interpret this as O3-S being externally irradiated by the AGN, akin to the famous Hanny's Voorwerp object in the local Universe. In addition, classical line ratio diagnostics (e.g., [O III]/H$\beta$ vs [N II]/H$\alpha$) put the DSFG itself in the AGN region of the diagrams, and therefore suggest it to be the most probable AGN host. Context. Although dust in galaxies represents only a few percent of the total baryonic mass, it plays a crucial role in the physical processes occurring in galaxies. Studying the dust content of galaxies, particularly at high$-z$, is therefore crucial to understand the link between dust production, obscured star formation and the build-up of galaxy stellar mass. Aims. To study the dust properties (mass and temperature) of the largest Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA)-selected sample of star-forming galaxies available from the archive (A$^3$COSMOS) and derive the dust mass function and dust mass density of galaxies from $z=0.5\,-\,6$. Methods. We performed spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting with the CIGALE code to constrain the dust mass and temperature of the A$^3$COSMOS galaxy sample, thanks to the UV-to-near-infrared photometric coverage of each galaxies combined with the ALMA (and Herschel when available) coverage of the Rayleigh-Jeans tail of their dust-continuum emission. We then computed and fitted the dust mass function by combining the A$^3$COSMOS and state-of-the-art {\it Herschel} samples, in order to obtain the best estimate of the integrated dust mass density up to $z \sim 6$. Results. Galaxies in \a3 have dust masses between $\sim 10^8$ and $\sim 10^{9.5}$ M$_{\odot}$. From the SED fitting, we were also able to derive a dust temperature, finding that the distribution of the dust temperature peaks at $\sim 30-35$K. The dust mass function at $z=0.5\,-\,6$ evolves with an increase of $M^*$ and decrease of the number density ($\Phi ^*$) and is in good agreement with literature estimates. The dust mass density shows a smooth decrease in its evolution from $z \sim 0.5$ to $z \sim 6$, which is steeper than what is found by models at $z \gtrsim 2$., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, Accepted for publication on A&A

Measurements of the size of dust continuum emission are an important tool for constraining the spatial extent of star formation and hence the build-up of stellar mass. Compact dust emission has generally been observed at Cosmic Noon (z~2-3). However, at earlier epochs, toward the end of the Reionization (z~4-6), only the sizes of a handful of IR-bright galaxies have been measured. In this work, we derive the dust emission sizes of main-sequence galaxies at z~5 from the ALPINE survey. We measure the dust effective radius r_e,FIR in the uv-plane in Band 7 of ALMA for seven ALPINE galaxies with resolved emission and we compare it with rest-frame UV and [CII]158$\mu$m measurements. We study the r_e,FIR-L_IR scaling relation by considering our dust size measurements and all the data in literature at z~4-6. Finally, we compare our size measurements with predictions from simulations. The dust emission in the selected ALPINE galaxies is rather extended (r_e,FIR~1.5-3 kpc), similar to [CII]158 um but a factor of ~2 larger than the rest-frame UV emission. Putting together all the measurements at z~5, spanning 2 decades in luminosity from L_IR ~ 10^11 L_sun to L_IR ~ 10^13 L_sun, the data highlight a steeply increasing trend of the r_e,FIR-L_IR relation at L_IR< 10^12 L_sun, followed by a downturn and a decreasing trend at brighter luminosities. Finally, simulations that extend up to the stellar masses of the ALPINE galaxies considered in the present work predict a sub-set of galaxies (~25% at 10^10 M_sun < M_star < 10^11 M_sun) with sizes as large as those measured., Comment: 8 pages, Accepted by A&A

The study of gas-phase metallicity and its spatial distribution at high redshift is crucial to understand the processes that shaped the growth and evolution of galaxies in the early Universe. Here we study the spatially resolved metallicity in three systems at $z\sim6-8$, namely A2744-YD4, BDF-3299, and COSMOS24108, with JWST NIRSpec IFU low-resolution ($R\sim100$) spectroscopic observations. These are among the highest-$z$ sources in which metallicity gradients have been probed so far. Each of these systems hosts several spatial components in the process of merging within a few kpc, identified from the rest-frame UV and optical stellar continuum and ionised gas emission line maps. The sources have heterogeneous properties, with stellar masses log($M_*/M_\odot) \sim 7.6-9.3$, star formation rates (SFRs) $\sim1-15$ $M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$, and gas-phase metallicities 12+log(O/H) $\sim 7.7-8.3$, which exhibit a large scatter within each system. Their properties are generally consistent with those of the highest-$z$ samples to date ($z\sim3-10$), though the sources in A2744-YD4 and COSMOS24108 are at the high end of the mass-metallicity relation (MZR) defined by the $z\sim3-10$ sources. Moreover, the targets in this work follow the predicted slope of the MZR at $z\sim 6-8$ from most cosmological simulations. The gas-phase metallicity gradients are consistent with being flat in the main sources of each system. Flat metallicity gradients are thought to arise from gas mixing processes on galaxy scales, such as mergers or galactic outflows and SN winds driven by intense stellar feedback, which wash out any gradient formed in the galaxy. The existence of flat gradients at $z\sim6-8$ sets also important constraints on cosmological simulations and chemical evolution models, whose predictions on the cosmic evolution of metallicity gradients differ significantly, but are mostly limited to $z<3$ so far., Comment: 15 pages (+5 appendix); 7 figures (+8 in appendix); in production on A&A

Observations at UV and optical wavelengths have revealed that galaxies at z~1-4 host star-forming regions, dubbed "clumps", which are believed to form due to the fragmentation of gravitationally unstable, gas-rich disks. However, the detection of the parent molecular clouds that give birth to such clumps is still possible only in a minority of galaxies, mostly at z~1. We investigated the [CII] and dust morphology of a z~3.4 lensed galaxy hosting four clumps detected in the UV continuum. We aimed to observe the [CII] emission of individual clumps that, unlike the UV, is not affected by dust extinction, to probe their nature and cold gas content. We conducted ALMA observations probing scales down to ~300 pc and detected three [CII] clumps. One (dubbed "NE") coincides with the brightest UV clump, while the other two ("SW" and "C") are not detected in the UV continuum. We do not detect the dust continuum. We converted the [CII] luminosity of individual clumps into molecular gas mass and found Mmol~10^8 Msun. By complementing it with the star formation rate (SFR) estimate from the UV continuum, we estimated the gas depletion time (tdep) of clumps and investigated their location in the Schmidt-Kennicutt plane. While the NE clump has a short tdep=0.16 Gyr, comparable with high-redshift starbursts, the SW and C clumps instead have longer tdep>0.65 Gyr and are likely probing the initial phases of star formation. The lack of dust continuum detection is consistent with the blue UV continuum slope estimated for this galaxy (beta~-2.5) and it indicates that dust inhomogeneities do not significantly affect the detection of UV clumps in this target. We pushed the observation of the cold gas content of individual clumps up to z~3.4 and showed that the [C II] line emission is a promising tracer of molecular clouds at high redshift, allowing the detection of clumps with a large range of depletion times., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

The Kennicutt-Schmidt (KS) relation between the gas and the star formation rate (SFR) surface density ($\Sigma_{\rm gas}$-$\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$) is essential to understand star formation processes in galaxies. So far, it has been measured up to z~2.5 in main-sequence galaxies. In this letter, we aim to put constraints at z~4.5 using a sample of four massive main-sequence galaxies observed by ALMA at high resolution. We obtained ~0.3"-resolution [CII] and continuum maps of our objects, which we then converted into gas and obscured SFR surface density maps. In addition, we produced unobscured SFR surface density maps by convolving Hubble ancillary data in the rest-frame UV. We then derived the average $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ in various $\Sigma_{\rm gas}$ bins, and estimated the uncertainties using a Monte Carlo sampling. Our galaxy sample follows the KS relation measured in main-sequence galaxies at lower redshift and is slightly lower than predictions from simulations. Our data points probe the high end both in terms of $\Sigma_{\rm gas}$ and $\Sigma_{\rm gas}$, and gas depletion timescales (285-843 Myr) remain similar to z~2 objects. However, three of our objects are clearly morphologically disturbed, and we could have expected shorter gas depletion timescales (~100 Myr) similar to merger-driven starbursts at lower redshifts. The existence of luminous quasars (QSO) at the Epoch of Reionization (EoR; i.e. z>6) powered by supermassive black holes (SMBH) with masses $\gtrsim10^9~M_\odot$ challenges models of early SMBH formation. To shed light on the nature of these sources we started a multiwavelength programme based on a sample of 18 HYPerluminous quasars at the Epoch of ReionizatION (HYPERION). These are the luminous QSOs whose SMBH must have had the fastest mass growth during the Universe first Gyr. In this paper we present the HYPERION sample and report on the first of the 3 years planned observations of the 2.4 Ms XMM-Newton Multi-Year Heritage program on which HYPERION is based. The goal of this program is to accurately characterize the X-ray nuclear properties of QSOs at the EoR. Through a joint X-ray spectral analysis of 10 sources, in the rest-frame $\sim2-50$ keV range, we report a steep average photon index ($\Gamma\sim2.4\pm0.1$). Absorption is not required. The average $\Gamma$ is inconsistent at $\geq4\sigma$ level with the canonical 1.8-2 value measured in QSO at z<6. This spectral slope is also much steeper than that reported in lower-z QSOs with similar luminosity or accretion rate, thus suggesting a genuine redshift evolution. Alternatively, we can interpret this result as the presence of an unusually low-energy cutoff $E_{cut}\sim20$ keV on a standard $\Gamma=1.9$ power-law. We also report on mild indications that HYPERION QSOs show higher soft X-ray emission at 2 keV compared to the UV one at 2500A than expected by lower-z luminous AGN. We speculate that a redshift-dependent coupling between the corona and accretion disc or intrinsically different coronal properties may account for the steep spectral slopes, especially in the presence of powerful winds. Line ratio diagnostics provide valuable clues on the source of ionizing radiation in galaxies with intense black hole accretion and starbursting events, such as local Seyfert or galaxies at the peak of the star formation history. We aim to provide a reference joint optical and mid-IR analysis for studying AGN identification via line ratios and testing predictions from photoionization models. We obtained homogenous optical spectra with the Southern Africa Large Telescope for 42 Seyfert galaxies with Spitzer/IRS spectroscopy and X-ray to mid-IR multiband data available. After confirming the power of the main optical ([OIII]) and mid-IR ([NeV], [OIV], [NeIII]) emission lines in tracing AGN activity, we explore diagrams based on ratios of optical and mid-IR lines by exploiting photoionization models of different ionizing sources (AGN, star formation and shocks). We find that pure AGN photoionization models are good at reproducing observations of Seyfert galaxies with an AGN fractional contribution to the mid-IR (5-40 micron) emission larger than 50 per cent. For targets with a lower AGN contribution these same models do not fully reproduce the observed mid-IR line ratios. Mid-IR ratios like [NeV]/[NeII], [OIV]/[NeII] and [NeIII]/[NeII] show a dependence on the AGN fractional contribution to the mid-IR unlike optical line ratios. An additional source of ionization, either from star formation or radiative shocks, can help explain the observations in the mid-IR. Among combinations of optical and mid-IR diagnostics in line ratio diagrams, only those involving the [OI]/Halpha ratio are promising diagnostics for simultaneously unraveling the relative role of AGN, star formation and, shocks. A proper identification of the dominant ionizing source would require the exploitation of analysis tools based on advanced statistical techniques as well as spatially resolved data., Comment: 31 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables. Recent attempts to detect [OIII] 88$\mu$m emission from super-early ($z>10$) galaxy candidates observed by JWST have been unsuccessful. By using zoom-in simulations, we show that these galaxies are faint, and mostly fall below the local metal-poor $\rm [OIII]-SFR$ relation as a result of their low ionization parameter, $U_{\rm ion}\lesssim 10^{-3}$. Such low $U_{\rm ion}$ values are found in galaxies that are in an early assembly stage, and whose stars are still embedded in high-density natal clouds. However, the most luminous galaxy in our sample ($\rm{log}[L_{\rm{[OIII]}}/L_\odot] = 8.4$, $U_{\rm ion} \approx 0.1$) could be detected by ALMA in only $2.8$ hrs., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, Submitted to MNRAS (comments are welcome)

In the submm regime, spectral line scans and line intensity mapping (LIM) are new promising probes for the cold gas content and star formation rate of galaxies across cosmic time. However, both of these two measurements suffer from field-to-field variance. We study the effect of field-to-field variance on the predicted CO and [CII] power spectra from future LIM experiments such as CONCERTO, as well as on the line luminosity functions (LFs) and the cosmic molecular gas mass density that are currently derived from spectral line scans. We combined a 117 $\rm deg^2$ dark matter lightcone from the Uchuu cosmological simulation with the simulated infrared dusty extragalactic sky (SIDES) approach. We find that in order to constrain the CO LF with an uncertainty below 20%, we need survey sizes of at least 0.1 $\rm deg^2$. Furthermore, accounting for the field-to-field variance using only the Poisson variance can underestimate the total variance by up to 80%. The lower the luminosity is and the larger the survey size is, the higher the level of underestimate. At $z$<3, the impact of field-to-field variance on the cosmic molecular gas density can be as high as 40% for the 4.6 arcmin$^2$ field, but drops below 10% for areas larger than 0.2 deg$^2$. However, at $z>3$ the variance decreases more slowly with survey size and for example drops below 10% for 1 deg$^2$ fields. Finally, we find that the CO and [CII] LIM power spectra can vary by up to 50% in $\rm 1 deg^2$ fields. This limits the accuracy of the constraints provided by the first 1 deg$^2$ surveys. The level of the shot noise power is always dominated by the sources that are just below the detection thresholds. We provide an analytical formula to estimate the field-to-field variance of current or future LIM experiments. The code and the full SIDES-Uchuu products (catalogs, cubes, and maps) are publicly available.

GDS J033218.92-275302.7 (here GS-14) is a $z\sim5.5$ galaxy detected in [CII] as part of the ALPINE survey with unusual UV spectral features that have been interpreted as signatures of either a double stellar population or of an active galactic nucleus (AGN). We exploited the multi-wavelength coverage of GS-14 to investigate the properties and the origin of its emission. We performed UV-to-NIR SED-fitting, with single/double stellar population and/or AGN component. We analyzed the VIMOS spectrum, which shows highly-ionized emission lines (Ovi, Nv, and Niv). The line properties have been compared with those observed in galaxies and AGN, and with the predictions from radiation transfer models for star-forming galaxies, AGN, and shocks. The SED-fitting provides a total stellar mass of $M_*=(4 \pm 1) \times 10^{10} M_\odot$, an age of the main stellar population of $\sim670 Myr$ and a recent short (8 Myr) burst of star formation (SF) of $\sim 90 M_\odot yr^{-1}$. The Nv line has a characteristic P-Cygni profile, which suggests a $\sim 3 Myr$ old population of stars with a mass of $\sim 5 \times10^{7} M_\odot$. The Nv profile also shows evidence for an additional component of nebular emission. The comparison of the line ratios with theoretical models allows us to associate the emission with SF or AGN, but the strong radiation field required to ionize the Ovi is more commonly related to AGN activity. We found evidence for an old and already evolved stellar population at $z\sim 5.5$ and show that the galaxy is experiencing a second short burst of SF. In addition, GS-14 carries signatures of obscured AGN activity. The AGN could be responsible for the short depletion time of this galaxy, thus making GS-14 one of the two ALPINE sources with hints of an active nucleus and an interesting target for future follow-ups., Comment: Accepted in A&A, 10 pages, 4 figures

We present a new prediction of the luminosity functions of the [CII] line at 158 $\mu$m, of the CO lines from J=0 to J=24, and of the molecular gas mass density up to z=10, using the Spectro-Photometric Realisations of Infrared-selected Targets at all-z (SPRITZ) simulation (Bisigello et al. 2021). We update the state-of-the-art phenomenological simulation SPRITZ to include both the CO ($J\leq24$) and [CII] line luminosities. This has been performed using different empirical and theoretical relations to convert the total infrared luminosity (or star formation rate) to [CII] or CO luminosity. The resulting line luminosity functions have been compared for validation with a large set of observations available in the literature. We then used the derived CO and [CII] line luminosities to estimate the molecular gas mass density and compare it with available observations. The CO and [CII] luminosity functions presented here are well in agreement with all the available observations. In particular, the best results for [CII] are obtained deriving the [CII] luminosity directly from the star formation rate, but considering a dependence of this relation on the gas metallicity. For all the CO luminosity functions, the estimates favoured by the data are derived considering different relations, depending on the ionisation mechanism dominating each galaxy, i.e. star formation or active galactic nuclei, and, moreover, deriving the $J\geq4$ CO lines directly from the [CII] luminosity. However, further data are necessary to fully discriminate between models. Finally, the best agreement with observations of the molecular gas mass density are derived by converting the [CII] luminosity to H2 mass, using a [CII]-to-H2 conversion ~130 $\rm M_{\odot}/{\rm L}_{\odot}$. The outstanding mass growth of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) at the Reionisation Epoch and how it is related to the concurrent growth of their host galaxies, poses challenges to theoretical models aimed at explaining how these systems formed in short timescales (<1 Gyr). To trace the average evolutionary paths of quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) and their host galaxies in the BH mass-host mass ($M_{\rm dyn}$) plane, we compare the star formation rate (SFR), derived from the accurate estimate of the dust temperature and the dust mass ($T_{\rm dust}, M_{\rm dust}$), with the BH accretion rate. To this aim, we analysed a deep, $900$ pc resolution ALMA observation of the sub-mm continuum, [CII] and H$_2$O of the $z\sim 6$ QSO J2310+1855, enabling a detailed study of dust properties and cold gas kinematics. We performed an accurate SED analysis obtaining a dust temperature of $T_{\rm dust} = 71$ K and a dust mass of $M_{\rm dust}= 4.4 \times 10^8\ \rm M_{\odot}$. The implied AGN-corrected SFR is $1240 \ \rm M_{\odot}yr^{-1}$, a factor of 2 smaller than previously reported for this QSO. We derived the best estimate of the dynamical mass $M_{\rm dyn} = 5.2\times 10^{10}\ \rm M_{\odot}$ within $r = 1.7$ kpc, based on a dynamical model of the system. We found that ${\rm SFR}/M_{\rm dyn}>\dot M_{\rm BH}/M_{\rm BH}$, suggesting that AGN feedback might be efficiently acting to slow down the SMBH accretion, while the stellar mass assembly is still vigorously taking place in the host galaxy. In addition, we were also able to detect high-velocity emission on the red and blue sides of the [CII] emission line, that traces a gaseous outflow, and for the first time, we mapped a spatially-resolved water vapour disk through the H$_2$O v=0 $3_{(2,2)}-3_{(1,3)}$ emission line detected at $\nu_{\rm obs} = 274.074$ GHz, whose kinematic properties and size are broadly consistent with those of the [CII] disk., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables. The intensity mapping of the [CII] 158um line redshifted to the sub-mm window is a promising probe of the z>4 star formation and its spatial distribution into the large-scale structure. To prepare the first-generation experiments (e.g., CONCERTO), we need realistic simulations of the sub-mm extragalactic sky in spectroscopy. We present a new version of the SIDES simulation including the main sub-mm lines around 1mm (CO, [CII], [CI]). This approach successfully reproduces the observed line luminosity functions. We then use our simulation to generate CONCERTO-like cubes (125-305GHz) and forecast the power spectra of the fluctuations caused by the various astrophysical components at those frequencies. Depending on our assumptions on the relation between star formation rate and [CII] luminosity, and the star formation history, our predictions of the z~6 [CII] power spectrum vary by two orders of magnitude. This highlights how uncertain the predictions are and how important future measurements will be to improve our understanding of this early epoch. SIDES can reproduce the CO shot noise recently measured at ~100 GHz by the mmIME experiment. Finally, we compare the contribution of the different astrophysical components at various redshift to the power spectra. The continuum is by far the brightest, by a factor of 3 to 100 depending on the frequency. At 300GHz, the CO foreground power spectrum is higher than the [CII] one for our base scenario. At lower frequency, the contrast between [CII] and extragalactic foregrounds is even worse. Masking the known galaxies from deep surveys should allow to reduce the foregrounds to 20% of the [CII] power spectrum up to z~6.5. However, this masking method will not be sufficient at higher redshifts. The characterization of the dynamical state of galaxies up to z~7 is crucial for constraining the mechanisms driving the mass assembly in the early Universe. However, it is unclear whether the data quality of current and future observations is sufficient to perform a solid dynamical analysis. This paper defines the angular resolution and S/N required for a robust characterization of the dynamical state of galaxies up to the EoR. The final aim is to help design spatially-resolved surveys targeting emission lines of primeval galaxies. We investigate the [CII]-158um emission from z~6-7 LBGs from the SERRA cosmological simulation, covering a range of dynamical states: from disks to major mergers. We create ALMA mock observations with various data quality and apply the kinematic classification methods used in the literature. These tests allow us to quantify the performances of such methods as a function of angular resolution and S/N. We find that barely-resolved observations do not allow the correct dynamical characterization of a galaxy, resulting in the misclassification of all disks in our sample. However, even when using spatially-resolved observations with data quality typical of high-z galaxies, the standard kinematic classification methods, based on the analysis of the moment maps, fail to distinguish a merger from a disk. The high angular resolution and S/N needed to apply these standard methods successfully can be achieved with current data only for a handful of bright galaxies. We propose a new classification method, called PVsplit, that quantifies the asymmetries and morphological features in position-velocity diagrams using three empirical parameters. We test PVsplit on our mock data concluding that it can predict whether a galaxy is a disk or a merger provided that S/N $\gtrsim10$, and the major axis is covered by $\gtrsim3$ independent resolution elements., Comment: Submitted to Astronomy and Astrophysics (A&A) Journal. We introduce SERRA, a suite of zoom-in high-resolution ($\sim 10\,\rm pc$) cosmological simulations including non-equilibrium chemistry and on-the-fly radiative transfer. The outputs are post-processed to derive galaxy UV+FIR continuum and emission line properties. Results are compared with available multi-wavelength data to constrain the physical properties (e.g., star formation rates, stellar/gas/dust mass, metallicity) of high-redshift $6 \lesssim z \lesssim 15$ galaxies. This flagship paper focuses on the $z=7.7$ sub-sample, including 202 galaxies with stellar mass $10^7 M_\odot \lesssim M_\star \lesssim 5\times 10^{10}M_\odot$, and specific star formation ranging from ${\rm sSFR} \sim 100\,{\rm Gyr}^{-1}$ in young, low-mass galaxies to $\sim 10\,{\rm Gyr}^{-1}$ for older, massive ones. At this redshift, SERRA galaxies are typically bursty, i.e. they are located above the Schmidt-Kennicutt relation by a factor $\kappa_s = 3.03^{+4.9}_{-1.8}$, consistent with recent findings for [OIII] and [CII] emitters at high-$z$. They also show relatively large ${\rm IRX} = L_{\rm FIR}/L_{\rm UV}$ values as a result of their compact/clumpy morphology effectively blocking the stellar UV luminosity. Note that this conclusion might be affected by insufficient spatial resolution at the molecular cloud level. We confirm that early galaxies lie on the standard $\rm [CII]-SFR$ relation; their observed $L_{\rm [OIII]}/L_{\rm [CII]} \simeq 1-10$ ratios can be reproduced by a part of the SERRA galaxies without the need of a top-heavy IMF and/or anomalous C/O abundances. We study the impact of deviations from the Kennicutt-Schmidt relation (quantified by the `burstiness' parameter $\kappa_s$), gas metallicity ($Z$), and density ($n$) on the observed [OIII]88$\mu$m/[CII]158$\mu$m surface brightness ratios ($\Sigma_{[OIII]}/\Sigma_{[CII]}$) in nine galaxies at $z\approx6-9$. We first discuss possible biases in the measured $\Sigma_{[OIII]}/\Sigma_{[CII]}$ ratios by comparing the data with zoom-in cosmological simulations, and then use a Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithm to derive the best fit values of ($\kappa_s, Z, n$). We find that (i) the strongest dependence of $\Sigma_{[OIII]}/\Sigma_{[CII]}$ is on $\kappa_s$; (ii) high ratios identify starburst galaxies with short gas depletion times ($t_{dep}=6-49\,\rm Myr$); (iii) a secondary dependence on density is found, with $\Sigma_{[OIII]}/\Sigma_{[CII]}$ anticorrelating with $n$ as a result of the lower [OIII] critical density, (iv) the ratio only weakly depends on $Z$. The nine galaxies are significantly enriched (Z=0.2-0.5 $Z_\odot$), and dense ($n=10^{1-3} {\rm cm}^{-3}$). The dust content of normal galaxies and the dust mass density (DMD) at high-z (z>4) are unconstrained given the source confusion and the sensitivity limitations of previous observations. The ALMA Large Program to INvestigate [CII] at Early Times (ALPINE), which targeted 118 UV-selected star-forming galaxies at 4.4

At redshift $z>5$ the far-infrared (FIR) continuum spectra of main-sequence galaxies are sparsely sampled, often with a single data point. The dust temperature $T_{\rm d, SED}$ thus has to be assumed in the FIR continuum fitting. This introduces large uncertainties regarding the derived dust mass ($M_{\rm d}$), FIR luminosity, and obscured fraction of the star formation rate. These are crucial quantities to quantify the effect of dust obscuration in high-$z$ galaxies. To overcome observations limitations, we introduce a new method that combines dust continuum information with the overlying $\hbox{[C $\scriptstyle\rm II $]} 158\mu$m line emission. By breaking the $M_{\rm d} - T_{\rm d, SED}$ degeneracy, with our method, we can reliably constrain the dust temperature with a single observation at $158\mu$m. This method can be applied to all ALMA and NOEMA $\hbox{[C $\scriptstyle\rm II $]}$ observations and exploited in ALMA Large Programs such as ALPINE and REBELS targeting $\hbox{[C $\scriptstyle\rm II $]}$ emitters at high-$z$. We also provide a physical interpretation of the empirical relation recently found between $molecular$ gas mass and $\hbox{[C $\scriptstyle\rm II $]}$ luminosity. We derive an analogous relation linking the $total$ gas surface density and $\hbox{[C $\scriptstyle\rm II $]}$ surface brightness. By combining the two, we predict the cosmic evolution of the surface density ratio $\Sigma_{\rm H_2} / \Sigma_{\rm gas}$. We find that $\Sigma_{\rm H_2} / \Sigma_{\rm gas}$ slowly increases with redshift, which is compatible with current observations at $0 < z < 4$., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, submitted to MNRAS

We study the structure of spatially resolved, line-of-sight velocity dispersion for galaxies in the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) traced by [CII] $158\mu\rm{m}$ line emission. Our laboratory is a simulated prototypical Lyman-break galaxy, "Freesia", part of the SERRA suite. The analysis encompasses the redshift range 6 < z < 8, when Freesia is in a very active assembling phase. We build velocity dispersion maps for three dynamically distinct evolutionary stages (Spiral Disk at z=7.4, Merger at z=8.0, and Disturbed Disk at z=6.5) using [CII] hyperspectral data cubes. We find that, at a high spatial resolution of 0.005" ($\simeq 30 pc$), the luminosity-weighted average velocity dispersion is $\sigma_{\rm{CII}}$~23-38 km/s with the highest value belonging to the highly-structured Disturbed Disk stage. Low resolution observations tend to overestimate $\sigma_{\rm CII}$ values due to beam smearing effects that depend on the specific galaxy structure. For an angular resolution of 0.02" (0.1"), the average velocity dispersion is 16-34% (52-115%) larger than the actual one. The [CII] emitting gas in Freesia has a Toomre parameter $\mathcal{Q}$~0.2 and a rotational-to-dispersion ratio of $v_{\rm c}/\sigma$~ 7 similar to that observed in z=2-3 galaxies. The primary energy source for the velocity dispersion is due to gravitational processes, such as merging/accretion events; energy input from stellar feedback is generally subdominant (< 10%). Finally, we find that the resolved $\sigma_{\rm{CII}} - {\Sigma}_{\rm SFR}$ relation is relatively flat for $0.02<{\Sigma}_{\rm SFR}/{{\rm M}_{\odot}} \mathrm{yr}^{-1} {\mathrm kpc}^{-2} < 30$, with the majority of data lying on the derived analytical relation $\sigma \propto \Sigma_{\rm SFR}^{5/7}$. ALMA observations have revealed that [CII] 158$\mu$m line emission in high-z galaxies is ~2-3$\times$ more extended than the UV continuum emission. Here we explore whether surface brightness dimming (SBD) of the [CII] line is responsible for the reported [CII] deficit, and the large $L_{\rm [OIII]}/L_{\rm [CII]}$ luminosity ratio measured in early galaxies. We first analyse archival ALMA images of nine z>6 galaxies observed in both [CII] and [OIII]. After performing several uv-tapering experiments to optimize the identification of extended line emission, we detect [CII] emission in the whole sample, with an extent systematically larger than the [CII] emission. Next, we use interferometric simulations to study the effect of SBD on the line luminosity estimate. About 40% of the extended [CII] component might be missed at an angular resolution of 0.8$^{\prime\prime}$, implying that $L_{\rm [CII]}$ is underestimated by a factor $\approx2$ in data at low (<7) signal-to-noise ratio . By combining these results, we conclude that $L_{\rm [CII]}$ of z>6 galaxies lies, on average, slightly below the local $L_{\rm [CII]}-SFR$ relation ($\Delta^{z=6-9}=-0.07\pm0.3$), but within the intrinsic dispersion of the relation. SBD correction also yields $L_{\rm [OIII]}/L_{\rm [CII]}<10$, i.e. more in line with current hydrodynamical simulations.

We present the detailed characterisation of a sample of 56 sources serendipitously detected in ALMA band 7, as part of the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate CII at Early Times (ALPINE) in COSMOS and ECDFS. These sources have been used to derive the total infrared luminosity function (LF) and to estimate the cosmic star formation rate density (SFRD) up to z=6. We have looked for counterparts in all the available multi-wavelength and photometric redshift catalogues, and in deeper near- and mid-IR source lists and maps, to identify optically dark sources with no matches in the public catalogues. Our ALMA blind survey allows us to push further the study of the nature and evolution of dusty galaxies at high-z, identifying luminous and massive sources to redshifts and faint luminosities never probed before by any far-infrared surveys. The ALPINE data are the first ones to sample the faint-end of the infrared LF, showing little evolution from z=2.5 to z=6, and a flat slope up to the highest redshifts. The SFRD obtained by integrating the luminosity function remains almost constant between z=2 and 6, and significantly higher than the optical/UV derivations, showing an important contribution of dusty galaxies and obscured star formation up to high-z. About 14 per cent of the ALPINE serendipitous continuum sources are optically+near-IR dark (six show a counterpart only in the mid-IR and no HST or near-IR identification, while two are detected as [CII] emitters at z=5). The six HST and near-IR dark galaxies with mid-IR counterpart contribute for about 17 per cent of the total SFRD at z=5 and dominate the high-mass end of the stellar mass function at z>3., Comment: 26 pages, 18 figures. We present the [CII]158$\mu$m line luminosity functions (LFs) at $z\sim4-6$ using the ALMA observations of 118 sources, which are selected to have UV luminosity $M_{1500A}<-20.2$ and optical spectroscopic redshifts in COSMOS and ECDF-S. Of the 118 targets, 75 have significant [CII] detections and 43 are upper limits. This is by far the largest sample of [CII] detections which allows us to set constraints to the volume density of [CII] emitters at $z\sim4-6$. But because this is a UV-selected sample, we are missing [CII]-bright but UV-faint sources making our constraints strict lower limits. Our derived LFs are statistically consistent with the $z\sim0$ [CII] LF at $10^{8.25} - 10^{9.75}L_\odot$. We compare our results with the upper limits of the [CII] LF derived from serendipitous sources in the ALPINE maps (Loiacono et al. 2020). We also infer the [CII] LFs based on published far-IR and CO LFs at $z\sim4-6$. Combining our robust lower limits with these additional estimates, we set further constraints to the true number density of [CII] emitters at $z\sim 4 - 6$. These additional LF estimates are largely above our LF at $L_{[CII]}>10^9L_{\odot}$, suggesting that UV-faint but [CII]-bright sources likely make a significant contributions to the [CII] emitter volume density. When we include all the LF estimates, we find that available model predictions underestimate the number densities of [CII] emitters at $z\sim4-6$. Finally, we set a constraint on the molecular gas mass density at $z\sim4-6$, with $\rho_{mol} \sim (2-7)\times10^7M_\odot$\,Mpc$^{-3}$. The molecular gas content of normal galaxies at z>4 is poorly constrained, because the commonly used molecular gas tracers become hard to detect. We use the [CII]158um luminosity, recently proposed as a molecular gas tracer, to estimate the molecular gas content in a large sample of main-sequence star-forming galaxies at z=4.4-5.9, with a median stellar mass of 10^9.7 Msun, drawn from the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate [CII] at Early times (ALPINE) survey. The agreement between molecular gas masses derived from [CII] luminosity, dynamical mass, and rest-frame 850um luminosity, extrapolated from the rest-frame 158um continuum, supports [CII] as a reliable tracer of molecular gas in our sample. We find a continuous decline of the molecular gas depletion timescale from z=0 to z=5.9, which reaches a mean value of (4.6+/-0.8)x10^8 yr at z~5.5, only a factor of 2-3 shorter than in present-day galaxies. This suggests a mild enhancement of star formation efficiency toward high redshifts, unless the molecular gas fraction significantly increases. Our estimates show that the rise in molecular gas fraction as reported previously, flattens off above z~3.7 to achieve a mean value of 63%+/-3 over z=4.4-5.9. This redshift evolution of the gas fraction is in line with the one of the specific star formation rate. We use multi-epoch abundance matching to follow the gas fraction evolution over cosmic time of progenitors of z=0 Milky Way-like galaxies in 10^13 Msun halos and of more massive z=0 galaxies in 10^14 Msun halos. Interestingly, the former progenitors show a monotonic decrease of the gas fraction with cosmic time, while the latter show a constant gas fraction from z=5.9 to z~2 and a decrease at z<2. We discuss three possible effects, namely outflows, halt of gas supplying, and over-efficient star formation, which may jointly contribute to the gas fraction plateau of the latter massive galaxies., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables. We present dust attenuation properties of spectroscopically confirmed star forming galaxies on the main sequence at a redshift of ~4.4-5.8. Our analyses are based on the far infrared continuum observations of 118 galaxies at rest-frame 158{\mu}m obtained with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) Large Program to INvestigate [CII] at Early times (ALPINE). We study the connection between the ultraviolet (UV) spectral slope ($\beta$), stellar mass (M_*), and infrared excess (IRX=L_IR/L_UV). Twenty-three galaxies are individually detected in the continuum at >3.5 sigma significance. We perform a stacking analysis using both detections and nondetections to study the average dust attenuation properties at z~4.4-5.8. The individual detections and stacks show that the IRX-$\beta$ relation at z~5 is consistent with a steeper dust attenuation curve than typically found at lower redshifts (z<4). The attenuation curve is similar to or even steeper than that of the extinction curve of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). This systematic change of the IRX-$\beta$ relation as a function of redshift suggests an evolution of dust attenuation properties at z>4. Similarly, we find that our galaxies have lower IRX values, up to 1dex on average, at a fixed mass compared to previously studied IRX-M_* relations at z<4, albeit with significant scatter. This implies a lower obscured fraction of star formation than at lower redshifts. Our results suggest that dust properties of UV-selected star forming galaxies at z>4 are characterised by (i) a steeper attenuation curve than at z<4, and (ii) a rapidly decreasing dust obscured fraction of star formation as a function of redshift. Nevertheless, even among this UV-selected sample, massive galaxies (log M_*/$M_\odot$>10) at z~5-6 already exhibit an obscured fraction of star formation of ~45%, indicating a rapid build-up of dust during the epoch of reionization., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures. accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics. We present a novel method to simultaneously characterise the star formation law and the interstellar medium properties of galaxies in the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) through the combination of [CII] 158$\mu$m (and its known relation with star formation rate) and CIII]$\lambda$1909{\AA} emission line data. The method, based on a Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithm, allows to determine the target galaxy average density, $n$, gas metallicity, $Z$, and burstiness parameter, $\kappa_s$, quantifying deviations from the Kennicutt-Schmidt relation. As an application, we consider COS-3018 (z=6.854), the only EoR Lyman Break Galaxy so far detected in both [CII] and CIII]. We show that COS-3018 is a moderate starburst ($\kappa_s \approx 3$), with $Z\approx 0.4\, Z_{\odot}$, and $n \approx 500\, {\rm cm^{-3}}$. We present the physical extent of [CII] 158um line-emitting gas from 46 star-forming galaxies at z=4-6 from the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate CII at Early Times (ALPINE). Using exponential profile fits, we measure the effective radius of the [CII] line (r_e,[CII]) for individual galaxies and compare them with the rest-frame ultra-violet (UV) continuum (r_e,UV) from Hubble Space Telescope images. The effective radius r_e,[CII] exceeds r_e,UV by factors of ~2-3 and the ratio of r_e,[CII]/r_e,UV increases as a function of M_star. We do not find strong evidence that [CII] line, the rest-frame UV, and FIR continuum are always displaced over ~ 1-kpc scale from each other. We identify 30% of isolated ALPINE sources as having an extended [CII] component over 10-kpc scales detected at 4.1$\sigma$-10.9$\sigma$ beyond the size of rest-frame UV and far-infrared (FIR) continuum. One object has tentative rotating features up to ~10-kpc, where the 3D model fit shows the rotating [CII]-gas disk spread over 4 times larger than the rest-frame UV-emitting region. Galaxies with the extended [CII] line structure have high star-formation rate (SFR), stellar mass (M_star), low Lya equivalent-width, and more blue-shifted (red-shifted) rest-frame UV metal absorption (Lya line), as compared to galaxies without such extended [CII] structures. Although we cannot rule out the possibility that a selection bias towards luminous objects may be responsible for such trends, the star-formation driven outflow also explains all these trends. The [CII] 158 micron line is one of the strongest IR emission lines, which has been shown to trace the star-formation rate (SFR) of galaxies in the nearby Universe and up to $z \sim 2$. Whether this is also the case at higher redshift and in the early Universe remains debated. The ALPINE survey, which targeted 118 star-forming galaxies at $4.4 < z< 5.9$, provides a new opportunity to examine this question with the first statistical dataset. Using the ALPINE data and earlier measurements from the literature we examine the relation between the [CII] luminosity and the SFR over the entire redshift range from $z \sim 4-8$. ALPINE galaxies, which are both detected in [CII] and dust continuum, show a good agreement with the local L([CII])-SFR relation. Galaxies undetected in the continuum with ALMA are found to be over-luminous in [CII], when the UV SFR is used. After accounting for dust-obscured star formation, by an amount SFR(IR)$\approx$SFR(UV) on average, which results from two different stacking methods and SED fitting, the ALPINE galaxies show an L([CII])-SFR relation comparable to the local one. When [CII] non-detections are taken into account, the slope may be marginally steeper at high-z, although this is still somewhat uncertain. When compared in a homogeneous manner, the $z>6 $ [CII] measurements (detections and upper limits) do not behave very differently from the $z \sim 4-6$ data. We find a weak dependence of L([CII])/SFR on the Lyman-alpha equivalent width. Finally, we find that the ratio L([CII])/LIR $\sim (1-3) \times 10^{-3}$ for the ALPINE sources, comparable to that of "normal" galaxies at lower redshift. Our analysis, which includes the largest sample ($\sim 150$ galaxies) of [CII] measurements at $z>4$ available so far, suggests no or little evolution of the L([CII])-SFR relation over the last 13 Gyr of cosmic time., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures. The ALPINE-ALMA large program targets the [CII] 158 $\mu$m line and the far-infrared continuum in 118 spectroscopically confirmed star-forming galaxies between z=4.4 and z=5.9. It represents the first large [CII] statistical sample built in this redshift range. We present details of the data processing and the construction of the catalogs. We detected 23 of our targets in the continuum. To derive accurate infrared luminosities and obscured star formation rates, we measured the conversion factor from the ALMA 158 $\mu$m rest-frame dust continuum luminosity to the total infrared luminosity (L$_{\rm IR}$) after constraining the dust spectral energy distribution by stacking a photometric sample similar to ALPINE in ancillary single-dish far-infrared data. We found that our continuum detections have a median L$_{\rm IR}$ of 4.4$\times 10^{11}$ L$_\odot$. We also detected 57 additional continuum sources in our ALMA pointings. They are at lower redshift than the ALPINE targets, with a mean photometric redshift of 2.5$\pm$0.2. We measured the 850 $\mu$m number counts between 0.35 and 3.5 mJy, improving the current interferometric constraints in this flux density range. We found a slope break in the number counts around 3 mJy with a shallower slope below this value. More than 40 % of the cosmic infrared background is emitted by sources brighter than 0.35 mJy. Finally, we detected the [CII] line in 75 of our targets. Their median [CII] luminosity is 4.8$\times$10$^8$ L$_\odot$ and their median full width at half maximum is 252 km/s. After measuring the mean obscured SFR in various [CII] luminosity bins by stacking ALPINE continuum data, we find a good agreement between our data and the local and predicted SFR-L$_{\rm [CII]}$ relations of De Looze et al. We report the serendipitous discovery of a bright galaxy (Gal-A) observed as part of the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate [CII] at Early times (ALPINE). While this galaxy is detected both in line and continuum emission in ALMA Band 7, it is completely dark in UV/optical filters and only presents a marginal detection in the UltraVISTA Ks band. We discuss the nature of the observed ALMA line, i.e. whether the emission comes from [CII] at z~4.6, or from high-J CO transitions at z~2.2. In the first case we find a [CII]-to-FIR luminosity ratio of log(L_[CII]/L_FIR)=-2.5, consistent with the average value for local star-forming galaxies (SFGs); in the second case, instead, the source would lie outside of the empirical relations between L_CO and L_FIR found in the literature. At both redshifts, we derive the star-formation rate (SFR) from the ALMA continuum, and the stellar mass (M*) by using stellar population synthesis models as input for LePHARE spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting. Exploiting our results, we believe that Gal-A is a Main-Sequence (MS), dusty SFG at z=4.6 (i.e. [CII] emitter) with log(SFR/[M/yr])~1.4 and log(M*/M)~9.7. This work underlines the crucial role of the ALPINE survey in making a census of this class of objects, in order to unveil their contribution to the global star-formation rate density (SFRD) of the Universe at the end of the Reionisation epoch., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures. We present the ancillary data and basic physical measurements for the galaxies in the ALMA Large Program to Investigate C+ at Early Times (ALPINE) survey - the first large multi-wavelength survey which aims at characterizing the gas and dust properties of 118 main-sequence galaxies at redshifts 4.4 < z < 5.9 via the measurement of [CII]-emission at 158 micro-meter (64% at >3.5$\sigma$) and the surrounding far-infrared (FIR) continuum in conjunction with a wealth of optical and near-infrared data. We outline in detail the spectroscopic data and selection of the galaxies as well as the ground- and space-based imaging products. In addition, we provide several basic measurements including stellar masses, star formation rates (SFR), rest-frame ultra-violet (UV) luminosities, UV continuum slopes ($\beta$), and absorption line redshifts, as well as H-alpha emission derived from Spitzer colors. We find that the ALPINE sample is representative of the 4 < z < 6 galaxy population selected by photometric methods and only slightly biased towards bluer colors ($\Delta\beta$ ~ 0.2). Using [CII] as tracer of the systemic redshift (confirmed for one galaxy at z=4.5 out of 118 for which we obtained optical [OII]$\lambda$3727A emission), we confirm red shifted Ly-alpha emission and blue shifted absorption lines similar to findings at lower redshifts. By stacking the rest-frame UV spectra in the [CII] rest-frame we find that the absorption lines in galaxies with high specific SFR are more blue shifted, which could be indicative of stronger winds and outflows., Comment: 48 pages, 33 figures, 7 tables (including Appendix), accepted for publication in ApJS

We study the impact of active galactic nuclei (AGN) on the CO Spectral Line Energy Distribution (SLED) of high-$z$ galaxies. In particular, we want to assess if the CO SLED can be used as a probe of AGN activity. To this purpose, we develop a semi-analytical model that takes into account the radiative transfer and the clumpy structure of giant molecular clouds where the CO lines are excited, their distribution in the galaxy disk, and the torus obscuration of the AGN radiation. We study the joint effect on the CO SLED excitation of (i) the X-ray luminosity from the AGN ($L_{X}$), (ii) the size of the molecular disk, (iii) the inclination angle ($\Omega$) of the torus with respect to the molecular disk, and (iv) the GMC mean density. We also discuss the possibility of an enhanced Cosmic Ray Ionization Rate (CRIR). We find that the X-ray Dominated Region (XDR) generated by the AGN in every case enhances the CO SLED for $J>5$, with increasing excitation of high-$J$ CO lines for increasing X-ray luminosity. Because high-$z$ galaxies are compact, the XDR region typically encloses the whole disk, thus its effect can be more important with respect to lower redshift objects. The impact of the XDR can be disentangled from an enhanced CRIR either if $L_X>10^{44} \rm \,erg\, s^{-1}$, or if $\Omega \geq 60^{\circ}$. We finally provide predictions on the CO(7-6)/[CII] and CO(17-16)/[CII] ratios as a function of $L_X$, which can be relevant for ALMA follow up of galaxies and quasars previously detected in [CII]., Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS

We study the efficiency of galactic feedback in the early Universe by stacking the [C II] 158 um emission in a large sample of normal star-forming galaxies at 4 < z < 6 from the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate [C II] at Early times (ALPINE) survey. Searching for typical signatures of outflows in the high-velocity tails of the stacked [C II] profile, we observe (i) deviations from a single-component Gaussian model in the combined residuals and (ii) broad emission in the stacked [C II] spectrum, with velocities of |v|<~ 500 km/s. The significance of these features increases when stacking the subset of galaxies with star formation rates (SFRs) higher than the median (SFRmed = 25 Msun/yr), thus confirming their star-formation-driven nature. The estimated mass outflow rates are comparable to the SFRs, yielding mass-loading factors of the order of unity (similarly to local star-forming galaxies), suggesting that star-formation-driven feedback may play a lesser role in quenching galaxies at z > 4. From the stacking analysis of the datacubes, we find that the combined [C II] core emission (|v|< 200 km/s) of the higher-SFR galaxies is extended on physical sizes of ~ 30 kpc (diameter scale), well beyond the analogous [C II] core emission of lower-SFR galaxies and the stacked far-infrared continuum. The detection of such extended metal-enriched gas, likely tracing circumgalactic gas enriched by past outflows, corroborates previous similar studies, confirming that baryon cycle and gas exchanges with the circumgalactic medium are at work in normal star-forming galaxies already at early epochs., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures. We report the detection of [CII]158um emission from a system of three closely-separated sources in the COSMOS field at z~4.56, as part of the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate CII at Early times (ALPINE). The two dominant sources are closely associated, both spatially (1.6"~11kpc) and in velocity (~100km/s), while the third source is slightly more distant (2.8"~18kpc, ~300km/s). The second strongest source features a slight velocity gradient, while no significant velocity gradient is seen in the other two sources. Using the observed [CII] luminosities, we derive a total log(SFR_[CII]/[Msol/year])=2.8+/-0.2, which may be split into contributions of 59%, 31%, and 10% from the central, east, and west sources, respectively. Comparison of these [CII] detections to recent zoom-in cosmological simulations suggests an ongoing major merger. We are thus witnessing a system in a major phase of mass build-up by merging, including an on-going major merger and an upcoming minor merger, which is expected to end up in a single massive galaxy by z~2.5., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, submitted to MNRASL

A tight relation between the [CII]158$\mu$m line luminosity and star formation rate is measured in local galaxies. At high redshift ($z>5$), though, a much larger scatter is observed, with a considerable (15-20\%) fraction of the outliers being [CII]-deficient. Moreover, the [CII] surface brightness ($\Sigma_{\rm CII}$) of these sources is systematically lower than expected from the local relation. To clarify the origin of such [CII]-deficiency we have developed an analytical model that fits local [CII] data, and has been validated against radiative transfer simulations performed with CLOUDY. The model predicts an overall increase of $\Sigma_{\rm CII}$ with the surface star formation rate ($\Sigma_*$). However, for $\Sigma_* > 1 M_\odot~{\rm yr}^{-1}~{\rm kpc}^{-2}$, $\Sigma_{\rm CII}$ saturates. We conclude that underluminous [CII] systems can result from a combination of three factors: (a) large upward deviations from the Kennicutt-Schmidt relation ($\kappa_s \gg 1$), parameterized by the "burstiness" parameter $\kappa_s$; (b) low metallicity; (c) low gas density, at least for the most extreme sources (e.g. CR7). Observations of [CII] emission alone cannot break the degeneracy among the above three parameters; this requires additional information coming from other emission lines (e.g. [OIII]88$\mu$m, CIII]1909A, CO lines). We study the photoevaporation of Jeans-unstable molecular clumps by isotropic FUV (6 eV $< {\rm h}\nu$ < 13.6 eV) radiation, through 3D radiative transfer hydrodynamical simulations implementing a non-equilibrium chemical network that includes the formation and dissociation of H$_2$. We run a set of simulations considering different clump masses ($M=10-200$ M$_\odot$) and impinging fluxes ($G_0=2\times 10^3-8\times 10^4$ in Habing units). In the initial phase, the radiation sweeps the clump as an R-type dissociation front, reducing the H$_2$ mass by a factor 40-90%. Then, a weak ($\mathcal{M}\simeq 2$) shock develops and travels towards the centre of the clump, which collapses while loosing mass from its surface. All considered clumps remain gravitationally unstable even if radiation rips off most of the clump mass, showing that external FUV radiation is not able to stop clump collapse. However, the FUV intensity regulates the final H$_2$ mass available for star formation: for example, for $G_0 < 10^4$ more than 10% of the initial clump mass survives. Finally, for massive clumps ($\sim 100$ M$_\odot$) the H$_2$ mass increases by 25-50% during the collapse, mostly because of the rapid density growth that implies a more efficient H$_2$ self-shielding., Comment: 17 pages, 16 figures; added references, corrected typos

We study the kinematical properties of galaxies in the Epoch of Reionization via the [CII] 158$\mu$m line emission. The line profile provides information on the kinematics as well as structural properties such as the presence of a disk and satellites. To understand how these properties are encoded in the line profile, first we develop analytical models from which we identify disk inclination and gas turbulent motions as the key parameters affecting the line profile. To gain further insights, we use "Althaea", a highly-resolved ($30\, \rm pc$) simulated prototypical Lyman Break Galaxy, in the redshift range $z = 6-7$, when the galaxy is in a very active assembling phase. Based on morphology, we select three main dynamical stages: I) Merger , II) Spiral Disk, and III) Disturbed Disk. We identify spectral signatures of merger events, spiral arms, and extra-planar flows in I), II), and III), respectively. We derive a generalised dynamical mass vs. [CII]-line FWHM relation. If precise information on the galaxy inclination is (not) available, the returned mass estimate is accurate within a factor $2$ ($4$). A Tully-Fisher relation is found for the observed high-$z$ galaxies, i.e. $L_{\rm[CII]}\propto (FWHM)^{1.80\pm 0.35}$ for which we provide a simple, physically-based interpretation. Finally, we perform mock ALMA simulations to check the detectability of [CII]. When seen face-on, Althaea is always detected at $> 5\sigma$; in the edge-on case it remains undetected because the larger intrinsic FWHM pushes the line peak flux below detection limit. We study the formation and evolution of a sample of Lyman Break Galaxies in the Epoch of Reionization by using high-resolution ($\sim 10 \,{\rm pc}$), cosmological zoom-in simulations part of the SERRA suite. In SERRA, we follow the interstellar medium (ISM) thermo-chemical non-equilibrium evolution, and perform on-the-fly radiative transfer of the interstellar radiation field (ISRF). The simulation outputs are post-processed to compute the emission of far infrared lines ([CII], [NII], and [OIII]). At $z=8$, the most massive galaxy, `Freesia', has an age $t_\star \simeq 409\,{\rm Myr}$, stellar mass $M_{\star} \simeq 4.2\times 10^9 {\rm M}_{\odot}$, and a star formation rate ${\rm SFR} \simeq 11.5\,{\rm M}_{\odot}{\rm yr}^{-1}$, due to a recent burst. Freesia has two stellar components (A and B) separated by $\simeq 2.5\, {\rm kpc}$; other 11 galaxies are found within $56.9 \pm 21.6 \, {\rm kpc}$. The mean ISRF in the Habing band is $G = 7.9\, G_0$ and is spatially uniform; in contrast, the ionisation parameter is $U = 2^{+20}_{-2} \times 10^{-3}$, and has a patchy distribution peaked at the location of star-forming sites. The resulting ionising escape fraction from Freesia is $f_{\rm esc}\simeq 2\%$. While [CII] emission is extended (radius 1.54 kpc), [OIII] is concentrated in Freesia-A (0.85 kpc), where the ratio $\Sigma_{\rm [OIII]}/\Sigma_{\rm [CII]} \simeq 10$. As many high-$z$ galaxies, Freesia lies below the local [CII]-SFR relation. We show that this is the general consequence of a starburst phase (pushing the galaxy above the Kennicutt-Schmidt relation) which disrupts/photodissociates the emitting molecular clouds around star-forming sites. Metallicity has a sub-dominant impact on the amplitude of [CII]-SFR deviations., Comment: 22 pages, 14 figures, accepted by MNRAS

We present new deep ALMA and HST/WFC3 observations of MASOSA and VR7, two luminous Ly$\alpha$ emitters (LAEs) at $z=6.5$, for which the UV continuum level differ by a factor four. No IR dust continuum emission is detected in either, indicating little amounts of obscured star formation and/or high dust temperatures. MASOSA, with a UV luminosity M$_{1500}=-20.9$, compact size and very high Ly$\alpha$ EW$_{0}\approx145$ A, is undetected in [CII] to a limit of L$_{\rm [CII]}<2.2\times10^7$ L$_{\odot}$ implying a metallicity $Z\lesssim0.07 Z_{\odot}$. Intriguingly, our HST data indicates a red UV slope $\beta=-1.1\pm0.7$, at odds with the low dust content. VR7, which is a bright (M$_{1500}=-22.4$) galaxy with moderate color ($\beta=-1.4\pm0.3$) and Ly$\alpha$ EW$_0 = 34$ A, is clearly detected in [CII] emission (S/N=15). VR7's rest-frame UV morphology can be described by two components separated by $\approx1.5$ kpc and is globally more compact than the [CII] emission. The global [CII]-UV ratio indicates $Z\approx0.2 Z_{\odot}$, but there are large variations in the UV-[CII] ratio on kpc scales. We also identify diffuse, possibly outflowing, [CII]-emitting gas at $\approx 100$ km s$^{-1}$ with respect to the peak. VR7 appears assembling its components at a slightly more evolved stage than other luminous LAEs, with outflows already shaping its direct environment at $z\sim7$. Our results further indicate that the global [CII]-UV relation steepens at SFR $<30$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$, naturally explaining why the [CII]-UV ratio is anti-correlated with Ly$\alpha$ EW in many, but not all, observed LAEs., Comment: Main text 19 pages, 16 figures. We present Atacama Large Millimiter/submillimiter Array (ALMA) observations of eight highly excited CO (J$_{\rm up}>8$) lines and continuum emission in two $z\sim6$ quasars: SDSS J231038.88+185519.7 (hereafter J2310), for which CO(8-7), CO(9-8), and CO(17-16) lines have been observed, and ULAS J131911.29+095951.4 (J1319), observed in the CO(14-13), CO(17-16) and CO(19-18) lines. The continuum emission of both quasars arises from a compact region ($< 0.9$ kpc). By assuming a modified black-body law, we estimate dust masses of Log$(M_{\rm dust}/M_{\odot})=8.75\pm0.07$ and Log$(M_{\rm dust}/M_{\odot})=8.8\pm0.2$ and dust temperatures of $T_{\rm dust}=76\pm3~{\rm K}$ and $T_{\rm dust}=66^{+15}_{-10}~{\rm K}$, respectively for J2310 and J1319. Only CO(8-7) and CO(9-8) in J2310 are detected, while $3\sigma$ upper limits on luminosities are reported for the other lines of both quasars. The CO line luminosities and upper limits measured in J2310 and J1319 are consistent with those observed in local AGN and starburst galaxies, and other $z\sim 6$ quasars, except for SDSS J1148+5251 (J1148), the only quasar at $z=6.4$ with a previous CO(17-16) line detection. By computing the CO SLEDs normalised to the CO(6-5) line and FIR luminosities for J2310, J1319, and J1149, we conclude that different gas heating mechanisms (X-ray radiation and/or shocks) may explain the different CO luminosities observed in these $z\sim6$ quasar. With the recent discovery of a dozen dusty star-forming galaxies and around 30 quasars at z>5 that are hyper-luminous in the infrared ($\mu$$L_{\rm IR}>10^{13}$ L$_{\odot}$, where $\mu$ is a lensing magnification factor), the possibility has opened up for SPICA, the proposed ESA M5 mid-/far-infrared mission, to extend its spectroscopic studies toward the epoch of reionization and beyond. In this paper, we examine the feasibility and scientific potential of such observations with SPICA's far-infrared spectrometer SAFARI, which will probe a spectral range (35-230 $\mu$m) that will be unexplored by ALMA and JWST. Our simulations show that SAFARI is capable of delivering good-quality spectra for hyper-luminous infrared galaxies (HyLIRGs) at z=5-10, allowing us to sample spectral features in the rest-frame mid-infrared and to investigate a host of key scientific issues, such as the relative importance of star formation versus AGN, the hardness of the radiation field, the level of chemical enrichment, and the properties of the molecular gas. From a broader perspective, SAFARI offers the potential to open up a new frontier in the study of the early Universe, providing access to uniquely powerful spectral features for probing first-generation objects, such as the key cooling lines of low-metallicity or metal-free forming galaxies (fine-structure and H2 lines) and emission features of solid compounds freshly synthesized by Population III supernovae. Ultimately, SAFARI's ability to explore the high-redshift Universe will be determined by the availability of sufficiently bright targets (whether intrinsically luminous or gravitationally lensed). With its launch expected around 2030, SPICA is ideally positioned to take full advantage of upcoming wide-field surveys such as LSST, SKA, Euclid, and WFIRST, which are likely to provide extraordinary targets for SAFARI., Comment: 24 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in PASA (SPICA special issue)

The recent discovery of dusty galaxies well into the Epoch of Reionization (redshift $z>6$) poses challenging questions about the properties of the interstellar medium in these pristine systems. By combining state-of-the-art hydrodynamic and dust radiative transfer simulations, we address these questions focusing on the recently discovered dusty galaxy A2744_YD4 ($z=8.38$, Laporte et al. 2017}). We show that we can reproduce the observed spectral energy distribution (SED) only using different physical values with respect to the inferred ones by Laporte et al(2017), i.e. a star formation rate of $\mathrm{SFR} = 78\;\rm M_\odot \rm yr^{-1}$, a factor $\approx 4$ higher than deduced from simple Spectral Energy Distribution fitting. In this case we find: (a) dust attenuation (corresponding to $\tau_V=1.4$) is consistent with a Milky Way extinction curve; (b) the dust-to-metal ratio is low, $f_\mathrm{d} \sim 0.08$, implying that early dust formation is rather inefficient; (c) the luminosity-weighted dust temperature is high, $T_d=91\pm 23\, \rm K$, as a result of the intense ($\approx 100\times$ MW) interstellar radiation field; (d) due to the high $T_d$, the ALMA Band 7 detection can be explained by a limited dust mass, $M_d=1.6\times 10^6 $M$_\odot$. Finally, the high dust temperatures might solve the puzzling low infrared excess recently deduced for high-$z$ galaxies from the IRX-$\beta$ relation., Comment: 15 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present ALMA observations at 107.291 GHz (band 3) and 214.532 GHz (band 6) of GMASS 0953, a star-forming galaxy at z=2.226 hosting an obscured AGN that has been proposed as a progenitor of compact quiescent galaxies (QG). We measure for the first time the size of the dust and molecular gas emission of GMASS 0953 that we find to be extremely compact ($\sim$1 kpc). This result, coupled with a very high ISM density (n$\sim$10$^{5.5}$ cm$^{-3}$), a low gas mass fraction ($\sim$0.2) and a short gas depletion timescale ($\sim$150 Myr) imply that GMASS 0953 is experiencing an episode of intense star-formation in its central region that will rapidly exhaust its gas reservoirs, likely aided by AGN-induced feedback, confirming its fate as a compact QG. Kinematic analysis of the CO(6-5) line shows evidence of rapidly-rotating gas ($V_{rot}$=320$^{+92}_{-53}$ km s$^{-1}$), as observed also in a handful of similar sources at the same redshift. On-going quenching mechanisms could either destroy the rotation or leave it intact leading the galaxy to evolve into a rotating QG., Comment: MNRAS in press, 8 pages, 8 figures

We present a detailed analysis of the X-ray and molecular gas emission in the nearby galaxy NGC 34, to constrain the properties of molecular gas, and assess whether, and to what extent, the radiation produced by the accretion onto the central black hole affects the CO line emission. We analyse the CO Spectral Line Energy Distribution (SLED) as resulting mainly from Herschel and ALMA data, along with X-ray data from NuSTAR and XMM-Newton. The X-ray data analysis suggests the presence of a heavily obscured AGN with an intrinsic luminosity of L$_{\rm{1-100\,keV}} \simeq 4.0\times10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$. ALMA high resolution data ($\theta \simeq 0.2''$) allows us to scan the nuclear region down to a spatial scale of $\approx 100$ pc for the CO(6-5) transition. We model the observed SLED using Photo-Dissociation Region (PDR), X-ray-Dominated Region (XDR), and shock models, finding that a combination of a PDR and an XDR provides the best fit to the observations. The PDR component, characterized by gas density ${\rm log}(n/{\rm cm^{-3}})=2.5$ and temperature $T=30$ K, reproduces the low-J CO line luminosities. The XDR is instead characterised by a denser and warmer gas (${\rm log}(n/{\rm cm^{-3}})=4.5$, $T =65$ K), and is necessary to fit the high-J transitions. The addition of a third component to account for the presence of shocks has been also tested but does not improve the fit of the CO SLED. IR spectroscopy in the range 12-230 micron with the SPace IR telescope for Cosmology and Astrophysics (SPICA) will reveal the physical processes that govern the formation and evolution of galaxies and black holes through cosmic time, bridging the gap between the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and the new generation of Extremely Large Telescopes (ELTs) at shorter wavelengths and the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) at longer wavelengths. SPICA, with its 2.5-m telescope actively-cooled to below 8K, will obtain the first spectroscopic determination, in the mid-IR rest-frame, of both the star-formation rate and black hole accretion rate histories of galaxies, reaching lookback times of 12 Gyr, for large statistically significant samples. Densities, temperatures, radiation fields and gas-phase metallicities will be measured in dust-obscured galaxies and active galactic nuclei (AGN), sampling a large range in mass and luminosity, from faint local dwarf galaxies to luminous quasars in the distant Universe. AGN and starburst feedback and feeding mechanisms in distant galaxies will be uncovered through detailed measurements of molecular and atomic line profiles. SPICA's large-area deep spectrophotometric surveys will provide mid-IR spectra and continuum fluxes for unbiased samples of tens of thousands of galaxies, out to redshifts of z~6. We present spectroscopic follow-up observations of CR7 with ALMA, targeted at constraining the infrared (IR) continuum and [CII]$_{158 \mu \rm m}$ line-emission at high spatial resolution matched to the HST/WFC3 imaging. CR7 is a luminous Ly$\alpha$ emitting galaxy at $z=6.6$ that consists of three separated UV-continuum components. Our observations reveal several well-separated components of [CII] emission. The two most luminous components in [CII] coincide with the brightest UV components (A and B), blue-shifted by $\approx 150$ km s$^{-1}$ with respect to the peak of Ly$\alpha$ emission. Other [CII] components are observed close to UV clumps B and C and are blue-shifted by $\approx300$ and $\approx80$ km s$^{-1}$ with respect to the systemic redshift. We do not detect FIR continuum emission due to dust with a 3$\sigma$ limiting luminosity L$_{\rm IR} (T_d = 35 \rm \, K) < 3.1\times10^{10}$ L$_{\odot}$. This allows us to mitigate uncertainties in the dust-corrected SFR and derive SFRs for the three UV clumps A, B and C of 28, 5 and 7 M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$. All clumps have [CII] luminosities consistent within the scatter observed in the local relation between SFR and L$_{\rm [CII]}$, implying that strong Ly$\alpha$ emission does not necessarily anti-correlate with [CII] luminosity. Combining our measurements with the literature, we show that galaxies with blue UV slopes have weaker [CII] emission at fixed SFR, potentially due to their lower metallicities and/or higher photoionisation. Comparison with hydrodynamical simulations suggests that CR7's clumps have metallicities of $0.1<\rm Z/Z_{\odot}<0.2$. The observed ISM structure of CR7 indicates that we are likely witnessing the build up of a central galaxy in the early Universe through complex accretion of satellites., Comment: 17 pages, accepted for publication in ApJ
