We analyze the optical power spectral density (PSD) for 22 active galactic nuclei (AGN) with measured X-ray PSDs using light curves from the All-Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae (ASAS-SN) and the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). The joint optical PSD is measured over up to six orders of magnitude in frequency space from timescales of minutes to a decade. We fit either a damped random walk (DRW) or a broken power law model to constrain the PSD model and break frequency. For the broken power-law fits to the joint PSDs, we find a high-frequency timescale which is proportional to both the X-ray timescales and the black hole masses, but the optical timescale is 2.7 dex longer. Assuming the optical and X-ray breaks are related by a physical process, such as reprocessing of X-ray emission, the break frequency difference interpreted as a light crossing time is consistent with the expected size difference between the optical and X-ray emission regions. On timescales of months to a decade, we also measured a correlation between the low-frequency optical break timescales and the X-ray break timescales, but with a much shallower slope. The DRW model provides acceptable fits and we generally confirm previously reported correlations between the DRW timescales and the black hole mass., Comment: 20 pages, 16 figures, submitted to ApJ

WR 20a is the most massive close-in binary known in our Galaxy. It is composed of two $\approx$80 M$_\odot$ Wolf-Rayet stars with a short period of $\approx$3.7 days in the open cluster Westerlund 2. As such, WR 20a presents us with a unique laboratory for studying the currently uncertain physics of binary evolution and compact object formation as well as for studying the wind collision region in an massive eclipsing binary system. We use deep Chandra observations of WR 20a to study the time variability of the wind collision region between the two Wolf-Rayet stars and are able to produce an X-ray light curve covering $\approx$2/3 of its orbital period. We find that the X-ray light curve is asymmetric because the flux of one peak is 2.5$\sigma$ larger than the flux of the other peak. This asymmetry could be caused by asymmetric mass-loss from the two stars or by the lopsidedness of the wind collision region due to the unusually fast rotation of the system. The X-ray light curve is also shifted in phase space when compared to the optical light curves measured by TESS and ASAS-SN. Additionally, we explore the ultimate fate of this system by modeling the resultant binary black hole merger expected at the end of the two stars' lives. We used Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) data to identify 29 candidate active galactic nuclei (AGNs) through their optical variability. The high-cadence, high-precision TESS light curves present a unique opportunity for the identification of AGNs, including those not selected through other methods. Of the candidates, we found that 18 have either previously been identified as AGNs in the literature or could have been selected based on emission-line diagnostics, mid-IR colors, or X-ray luminosity. AGNs in low-mass galaxies offer a window into supermassive black hole (SMBH) and galaxy co-evolution and 8 of the 29 candidates have estimated black hole masses $\mathrm{\lesssim 10^{6} M_{\odot}}$. The low-mass galaxies NGC 4395 and NGC 4449 are two of our five "high-confidence" candidates. By applying our methodology to the entire TESS main and extended mission datasets, we expect to identify $\sim$45 more AGN candidates, of which $\sim$26 will be new and $\sim$8 will be in low-mass galaxies., Comment: 21 pages, 17 figures, 6 tables. We present a spectroscopic analysis of 44 low-luminosity host galaxies of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) detected by the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN), using the emission lines to measure metallicities and star formation rates. We find that although the star formation activity of our sample is representative of general galaxies, there is some evidence that the lowest-mass SN Ia host galaxies (log($M_\star/M_\odot$)$<8$) in our sample have high metallicities compared to general galaxies of similar masses. We also identify a subset of 5 galaxies with particularly high metallicities. This highlights the need for spectroscopic analysis of more low-luminosity, low-mass SN Ia host galaxies to test the robustness of these conclusions and their potential impact on our understanding of SN Ia progenitors., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables. ASASSN-14ko is a nuclear transient at the center of the AGN ESO 253-G003 that undergoes periodic flares. Optical flares were first observed in 2014 by the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN) and their peak times are well-modeled with a period of $115.2^{+1.3}_{-1.2}$ days and period derivative of $-0.0026 \pm 0.0006$. Here we present ASAS-SN, Chandra, HST/STIS, NICER, Swift, and TESS data for the flares that occurred in December 2020, April 2021, July 2021, and November 2021. The HST/STIS UV spectra evolve from blue shifted broad absorption features to red shifted broad emission features over $\sim$10 days. The Swift UV/optical light curves peaked as predicted by the timing model, but the peak UV luminosities varied between flares and the UV flux in July 2021 was roughly half the brightness of all other peaks. The X-ray luminosities consistently decreased and the spectra became harder during the UV/optical rise but apparently without changes in absorption. Finally, two high-cadence TESS light curves from December 2020 and November 2018 showed that the slopes during the rising and declining phases changed over time, which indicates some stochasticity in the flare's driving mechanism. We analyze high-cadence data from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) of the ambiguous nuclear transient (ANT) ASASSN-18el. The optical changing-look phenomenon in ASASSN-18el has been argued to be due to either a drastic change in the accretion rate of the existing active galactic nucleus (AGN) or the result of a tidal disruption event (TDE). Throughout the TESS observations, short-timescale stochastic variability is seen, consistent with an AGN. We are able to fit the TESS light curve with a damped-random-walk (DRW) model and recover a rest-frame variability amplitude of $\hat{\sigma} = 0.93 \pm 0.02$ mJy and a rest-frame timescale of $\tau_{DRW} = 20^{+15}_{-6}$ days. We find that the estimated $\tau_{DRW}$ for ASASSN-18el is broadly consistent with an apparent relationship between the DRW timescale and central supermassive black hole mass. The large-amplitude stochastic variability of ASASSN-18el, particularly during late stages of the flare, suggests that the origin of this ANT is likely due to extreme AGN activity rather than a TDE., Comment: Updated to reflect the accepted version in MNRAS

TOI-1259 consists of a transiting exoplanet orbiting a main sequence star, with a bound outer white dwarf companion. Less than a dozen systems with this architecture are known. We conduct follow-up spectroscopy on the white dwarf TOI-1259B using the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) to better characterise it. We observe only strong hydrogen lines, making TOI-1259B a DA white dwarf. We see no evidence of heavy element pollution, which would have been evidence of planetary material around the white dwarf. Such pollution is seen in ~ 25 - 50% of white dwarfs, but it is unknown if this rate is higher or lower in TOI-1259-like systems that contain a known planet. Our spectroscopy permits an improved white dwarf age measurement of 4.05 (+1.00 -0.42) Gyrs, which matches gyrochronology of the main sequence star. We present the discovery that ATLAS18mlw was a tidal disruption event (TDE) in the galaxy WISEA J073544.83+663717.3, at a luminosity distance of 334 Mpc. Initially discovered by the Asteroid Terrestrial Impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) on 2018 March 17.3, the TDE nature of the transient was uncovered only recently with the re-reduction of a SuperNova Integral Field Spectrograph (SNIFS) spectrum. This spectrum, taken by the Spectral Classification of Astronomical Transients (SCAT) survey, shows a strong blue continuum and a broad H$\alpha$ emission line. Here we present roughly six years of optical survey photometry beginning before the TDE to constrain AGN activity, optical spectroscopy of the transient, and a detailed study of the host galaxy properties through analysis of archival photometry and a host spectrum. ATLAS18mlw was detected in ground-based light curves for roughly two months. From a blackbody fit to the transient spectrum and bolometric correction of the optical light curve, we conclude that ATLAS18mlw is best explained by a low-luminosity TDE with a peak luminosity of log(L [erg s$^{-1}$]) = $43.5 \pm 0.2$. The TDE classification is further supported by the quiescent Balmer strong nature of the host galaxy. We also calculated the TDE decline rate from the bolometric light curve and find $\Delta L_{40} = -0.7 \pm 0.2$ dex, making ATLAS18mlw a member of the growing class of ``faint and fast'' TDEs with low peak luminosities and fast decline rates., Comment: Updated to reflect the accepted version in MNRAS

As part of an All-Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae (ASAS-SN) search for sources with large flux decrements, we discovered a transient where the quiescent, stellar source, ASASSN-V J192114.84+624950.8, rapidly decreased in flux by $\sim55\%$ ($\sim0.9$ mag) in the g-band. The \textit{TESS} light curve revealed that the source is a highly eccentric, eclipsing binary. Fits to the light curve using \textsc{phoebe} find the binary orbit to have $e=0.79$, $P_{\rm orb}=18.462~\text{days}$, and $i=88.6^{\circ}$ and the ratios of the stellar radii and temperatures to be $R_2/R_1 = 0.71$ and $T_{e,2}/T_{e,1} = 0.82$. Both stars are chromospherically active, allowing us to determine their rotational periods of $P_1=1.52$ days and $P_2=1.79$ days, respectively. A LBT/MODS spectrum shows that the primary is a late-G or early-K type dwarf. Fits to the SED show that the luminosities and temperatures of the two stars are $L_1 = 0.48~L_{\sun}$, $T_1= 5050~K$, $L_2 = 0.12~L_{\sun}$, and $T_{2} = 4190~K$. We present observations of the extremely luminous but ambiguous nuclear transient (ANT) ASASSN-17jz, spanning roughly 1200 days of the object's evolution. ASASSN-17jz was discovered by the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN) in the galaxy SDSS J171955.84+414049.4 on UT 2017 July 27 at a redshift of $z=0.1641$. The transient peaked at an absolute $B$-band magnitude of $M_{B,{\rm peak}}=-22.81$, corresponding to a bolometric luminosity of $L_{\rm bol,peak}=8.3\times10^{44}$~erg~s$^{-1}$, and exhibited late-time ultraviolet emission that was still ongoing in our latest observations. Integrating the full light curve gives a total emitted energy of $E_{\rm tot}=(1.36\pm0.08)\times10^{52}$~erg, with $(0.80\pm0.02)\times10^{52}$~erg of this emitted within 200 days of peak light. This late-time ultraviolet emission is accompanied by increasing X-ray emission that becomes softer as it brightens. ASASSN-17jz exhibited a large number of spectral emission lines most commonly seen in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with little evidence of evolution. It also showed transient Balmer features which became fainter and broader over time, and are still being detected $>1000$ days after peak brightness. We consider various physical scenarios for the origin of the transient, including supernovae (SNe), tidal disruption events (TDEs), AGN outbursts, and ANTs. We find that the most likely explanation is that ASASSN-17jz was an SN~IIn occurring in or near the disk of an existing AGN, and that the late-time emission is caused by the AGN transitioning to a more active state., Comment: 35 pages, 20 figures, 10 tables. We present observations of ASASSN-20hx, a nearby ambiguous nuclear transient (ANT) discovered in NGC 6297 by the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN). We observed ASASSN-20hx from $-$30 to 275 days relative to peak UV/optical emission using high-cadence, multi-wavelength spectroscopy and photometry. From Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) data, we determine that the ANT began to brighten on 2020 June 22.8 with a linear rise in flux for at least the first week. ASASSN-20hx peaked in the UV/optical 30 days later on 2020 July 22.8 (MJD = 59052.8) at a bolometric luminosity of $L = (3.15 \pm 0.04) \times 10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The subsequent decline is slower than any TDE observed to date and consistent with many other ANTs. Compared to an archival X-ray detection, the X-ray luminosity of ASASSN-20hx increased by an order of magnitude to $L_{x} \sim 1.5 \times 10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$ and then slowly declined over time. The X-ray emission is well-fit by a power law with a photon index of $\Gamma \sim 2.3 - 2.6$. Both the optical and near infrared spectra of ASASSN-20hx lack emission lines, unusual for any known class of nuclear transient. Blazars are active galactic nuclei with their relativistic jets pointing toward the observer, with two major sub-classes, the flat spectrum radio quasars and BL Lac objects. We present multi-wavelength photometric and spectroscopic monitoring observations of the blazar, B2 1420+32, focusing on its outbursts in 2018-2020. Multi-epoch spectra show that the blazar exhibited large scale spectral variability in both its continuum and line emission, accompanied by dramatic gamma-ray and optical variability by factors of up to 40 and 15, respectively, on week to month timescales. Over the last decade, the gamma-ray and optical fluxes increased by factors of 1500 and 100, respectively. B2 1420+32 was an FSRQ with broad emission lines in 1995. Following a series of flares starting in 2018, it transitioned between BL Lac and FSRQ states multiple times, with the emergence of a strong Fe pseudo continuum. Two spectra also contain components that can be modeled as single-temperature black bodies of 12,000 and 5,200 K. Such a collection of "changing look" features has never been observed previously in a blazar. We measure gamma-ray-optical and the inter-band optical lags implying emission region separations of less than 800 and 130 gravitational radii respectively. Since most emission line flux variations, except the Fe continuum, are within a factor of 2-3, the transitions between FSRQ and BL Lac classifications are mainly caused by the continuum variability. The large Fe continuum flux increase suggests the occurrence of dust sublimation releasing more Fe ions in the central engine and an energy transfer from the relativistic jet to sub-relativistic emission components., Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures

We present the discovery that ASASSN-14ko is a periodically flaring AGN at the center of the galaxy ESO 253-G003. At the time of its discovery by the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN), it was classified as a supernova close to the nucleus. The subsequent six years of V- and g-band ASAS-SN observations reveal that ASASSN-14ko has nuclear flares occurring at regular intervals. The seventeen observed outbursts show evidence of a decreasing period over time, with a mean period of $P_0 = 114.2 \pm 0.4$ days and a period derivative of $\dot{P} = -0.0017\pm0.0003$. The most recent outburst in May 2020, which took place as predicted, exhibited spectroscopic changes during the rise and a had a UV bright, blackbody spectral energy distribution similar to tidal disruption events (TDEs). The X-ray flux decreased by a factor of 4 at the beginning of the outburst and then returned to its quiescent flux after ~8 days. TESS observed an outburst during Sectors 4-6, revealing a rise time of $5.60 \pm 0.05$ days in the optical and a decline that is best fit with an exponential model. We discuss several possible scenarios to explain ASASSN-14ko's periodic outbursts, but currently favor a repeated partial TDE. Classical novae are thermonuclear explosions that occur on the surfaces of white dwarf stars in interacting binary systems (Bode & Evans 2008). It has long been thought that the luminosity of classical novae is powered by continued nuclear burning on the surface of the white dwarf after the initial runaway (Gallaher & Starrfield 1978). However, recent observations of GeV $\gamma$-rays from classical novae have hinted that shocks internal to the nova ejecta may dominate the nova emission. Shocks have also been suggested to power the luminosity of events as diverse as stellar mergers (Metzger & Pejcha 2017), supernovae (Moriya et al. 2018), and tidal disruption events (Roth et al. 2016), but observational confirmation has been lacking. Here we report simultaneous space-based optical and $\gamma$-ray observations of the 2018 nova V906 Carinae (ASASSN-18fv), revealing a remarkable series of distinct correlated flares in both bands. The optical and $\gamma$-ray flares occur simultaneously, implying a common origin in shocks. During the flares, the nova luminosity doubles, implying that the bulk of the luminosity is shock-powered. Furthermore, we detect concurrent but weak X-ray emission from deeply embedded shocks, confirming that the shock power does not appear in the X-ray band and supporting its emergence at longer wavelengths. Our data, spanning the spectrum from radio to $\gamma$-ray, provide direct evidence that shocks can power substantial luminosity in classical novae and other optical transients., Comment: 49 pages including supplementary information. We report photometry and spectroscopy of the outburst of the young stellar object ESO-Halpha 99. The outburst was first noticed in Gaia alert Gaia18dvc and later by ATLAS. We have established the outburst light curve with archival ATLAS ``Orange'' filter photometry, Gaia data, new V-band photometry, and J, H, and K_s photometry from IRIS and UKIRT. The brightness has fluctuated several times near the light curve maximum. The TESS satellite observed ESO-Halpha 99 with high cadence during one of these minor minima and found brightness fluctuations on timescales of days and hours. Imaging with UKIRT shows the outline of an outflow cavity, and we find one knot of H_2 1-0 S(1) emission, now named MHO 1520, on the symmetry axis of this nebula, indicating recent collimated outflow activity from ESO-Halpha 99. Its pre-outburst SED shows a flat FIR spectrum, confirming its early evolutionary state and its similarity to other deeply embedded objects in the broader EXor class. The pre-outburst luminosity is 34 L_sun, a much higher luminosity than typical EXors, indicating that ESO-Halpha 99 may be a star of intermediate mass. Infrared and optical spectroscopy show a rich emission line spectrum, including HI lines, strong red CaII emission, as well as infrared CO bandhead emission, all characteristic EXors in the broadest sense. Comparison of the present spectra with an optical spectrum obtained in 1993, presumably in the quiescent state of the object, shows that during the present outburst the continuum component of the spectrum has increased notably more than the emission lines. We present the discovery and early evolution of ASASSN-19bt, a tidal disruption event (TDE) discovered by the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN) at a distance of $d\simeq115$ Mpc and the first TDE to be detected by TESS. As the TDE is located in the TESS Continuous Viewing Zone, our dataset includes 30-minute cadence observations starting on 2018 July 25, and we precisely measure that the TDE begins to brighten $\sim8.3$ days before its discovery. Our dataset also includes 18 epochs of Swift UVOT and XRT observations, 2 epochs of XMM-Newton observations, 13 spectroscopic observations, and ground data from the Las Cumbres Observatory telescope network, spanning from 32 days before peak through 37 days after peak. ASASSN-19bt thus has the most detailed pre-peak dataset for any TDE. The TESS light curve indicates that the transient began to brighten on 2019 January 21.6 and that for the first 15 days its rise was consistent with a flux $\propto t^2$ power-law model. The optical/UV emission is well-fit by a blackbody SED, and ASASSN-19bt exhibits an early spike in its luminosity and temperature roughly 32 rest-frame days before peak and spanning up to 14 days that has not been seen in other TDEs, possibly because UV observations were not triggered early enough to detect it. It peaked on 2019 March 04.9 at a luminosity of $L\simeq1.3\times10^{44}$ ergs s$^{-1}$ and radiated $E\simeq3.2\times10^{50}$ ergs during the 41-day rise to peak. We analyze a time series of optical spectra of SN~2014J from almost two weeks prior to maximum to nearly four months after maximum. We perform our analysis using the SYNOW code, which is well suited to track the distribution of the ions with velocity in the ejecta. We show that almost all of the spectral features during the entire epoch can be identified with permitted transitions of the common ions found in normal SNe Ia in agreement with previous studies. We show that 2014J is a relatively normal SN Ia. At early times the spectral features are dominated by Si II, S II, Mg II, and Ca II. These ions persist to maximum light with the appearance of Na I and Mg I. At later times iron-group elements also appear, as expected in the stratified abundance model of the formation of normal type Ia SNe. We do not find significant spectroscopic evidence for oxygen, until 100 days after maximum light. The +100 day identification of oxygen is tentative, and would imply significant mixing of unburned or only slight processed elements down to a velocity of 6,000 km/s. Our results are in relatively good agreement with other analyses in the IR.
