5. Biogas Production from Mesophilic Anaerobic Digestion to Treat Lignocellulosic Wastes in Mezcal Production.

Abstract

Vinasse and bagasse are residues from the production of mezcal, an alcoholic beverage. Treating these wastes is very important to avoid the contamination of water bodies and soils by their discharge into the environment. One of the processes to treat this type of waste is anaerobic digestion. In this study, mesophilic anaerobic digestions were carried out with different organic loads and a retention time of 30 days, where bagasse was thermally pretreated to decrease cellulose crystallization and reduce lignin content, which is highly resistant to chemical, biological, and enzymatic degradation, constituting a barrier for cellulose utilization during the process such as enzymatic hydrolysis and subsequent fermentation. The process carried out with a lower bagasse proportion of 5% resulted in a more significant reduction of COD, SSV, and a methane percentage of 70%, 49%, and 63%, respectively, while maintaining a pH between 6 and 7.5 and an alkalinity of 2,000 mg/L. These results indicate that the process was not inhibited when the content of bagasse was low, reaching the methanogenesis stage in the anaerobic digestion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The Vinasse is a mezcal distillation byproduct that contains large amounts of contaminants, which can affect the environment. An alternative for reducing the concentration of organic and inorganic material that Vinasse contains is implementing bioprocesses with semi-continuous operation. This research evaluated Stigeoclonium nanum in a photobioreactor flat panel with a capacity of 15 L of operation with a dilution rate of 0.033 d-1 (1L/ every two days) of Vinasse, quantifying growth of microalga and reduction of the high concentration of contaminants with daily determinations of photosynthetic pigments, the nitrogen of nitrates, total phosphorus, CDO, total carbohydrates and ammoniacal nitrogen. The results obtained were 143.06mg/L of total production of chlorophylls throughout the experiment, consumption percentages of nitrogen of nitrates, total phosphorus, CDO, and total carbohydrates of 59 %, 87 %, 6 %, and 23 %, respectively. Abstract

Titanate nanotubes (TiNT) were synthesized by hydrothermal method and used as support of rhodium nanoparticles. Results of X‐Ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy of TiNT revealed its structure of Na2Ti3O7, while the results of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and physisorption of N2 confirmed the multilayer nanotubular morphology with external diameter of ∼12 nm, length > 100 nm and a BET surface area of 195 m2 g−1. The TEM analysis of the rhodium supported sample (Rh/TiNT) showed evidence of small (∼1 nm) and highly dispersed rhodium particles. Results of X‐Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) revealed a strong electronic interaction between TiNT and Rh sites. The catalytic activity of Rh/TiNT for the hydrogenation of CO2 to formic acid at moderate temperature (∼40 °C) and atmospheric pressure was demonstrated as evidenced by results of Mass Spectrometry (MS) and in‐situ Diffuse Reflectance Infrared with Fourier Transform Spectroscopy (DRIFTS). The in‐situ studies showed active surface species bonded to support sites and to rhodium sites. It is proposed that under H2 atmosphere, Na+ cations near to Rh particles promote the conversion of CO2 via dissociated H, allowing the formation of formate species at low temperature. Abstract

A pilot-scale aerated lagoon was used for the aerobic treatment of pulp and paper mill effluent from September 1 to December 1, 2014. The aerated lagoon was installed at the chemistry laboratory in the Chemical Engineering Department at the Durango Institute of Technology and was fed with real pulp and paper mill effluent. The experimental work was run under various operating conditions. The operating parameters (total and volatile suspended solids (VSS) and dissolved oxygen concentration (DO)) and environmental variables (temperature, pH, COD, and BOD5 of influent water) were monitored daily. In all the experiments conducted, the aerated lagoon generated an effluent of optimal quality complying with the requirements of SEMARNAT (2003) and CONAGUA (2003). A model that explains the behavior of the system under realistic operating conditions was obtained. The model indicated an optimal DO of approximately 4 mg/L for concentrations up to 1000 mg/L, showing variations in concentrations above this value. This data indicate that the flexibility of the bacterial formulation and its ability to adapt to environmental changes play an important role in the stability of an aerated lagoon. 41. Plant-wide monitoring of processes under closed-loop control

Abstract

Faults in industrial processes produce off-spec products, unsafe conditions, and damage to equipment. According to Misra et al. (1999), just in the U.S. petrochemical industries, an annual loss of $20 billion has been estimated because of poor monitoring and control of such abnormal situations. Therefore, developing efficient methods for on line fault detection and identification has been one of the main tasks in industry. This dissertation focuses on the development of process monitoring, fault detection and identification methods that are applied to a polyester film process at DuPont. The monitoring methods developed in this dissertation are based on principal component analysis (PCA). The contributions of this dissertation are summarized as follows: - A new method is presented that is based on the variance of the reconstruction error to select the number of principal components (PC’s). This method demonstrates a minimum over the number of PC’s. Conditions are given so that the minimum corresponds to the true number of PC’s. Ten other methods that are available in the signal processing and chemometrics literature are overviewed and compared with the proposed method. Three data sets are used to test the different methods for selecting the number of PC’s: two of them are real process data and the other one is a batch reactor simulation. - A new approach is presented in the use of a fault identification index to identify faults based on fault directions. These are extracted from abnormal data using the singular value decomposition (SVD) method. The proposed method is demonstrated on an industrial polyester film process which is characterized by frequent set-point changes and multiple grade changes. Further, a comparison between the fault identification indexand the contribution plot method is given. - It is shown that both the loadings and scores of consensus principal component analysis (PCA) can be calculated directly from those of regular PCA, and the multi-block partial least squares (PLS) loadings, weights, and scores can be directly calculated from the regular PLS. The orthogonal properties of four multi-block PCA (MBPCA) and multi-block PLS (MBPLS) algorithms are explored. The use of MBPCA and MBPLS for decentralized monitoring and diagnosis is derived in terms of the regular PCA and PLS scores and residuals. The multi-block analysis algorithms are basically equivalent to the regular PCA and PLS algorithms. The blocking of process variables in a large scale plant, based on process knowledge, helps to localize the root cause of the fault in a decentralized manner. New definitions of block and variable contributions in the squared prediction error (SPE) and Hotteling’s T2 are proposed for decentralized monitoring. This decentralized monitoring method, based on proper variable blocking, is successfully applied to an industrial polyester film process. - In Chapter 4 a fault identification approach is proposed using regular PCA. With the multiblock analysis presented in Chapter 5, we propose to integrate the fault identification indexwith MBPCA. First MBPCA is used to identify the block where the fault occurs. Then fault directions are extracted from the fault block only. Instead of using all the sensors to do the identification only the information in the faulty block is used to identify the new fault. Next the original signal is decomposed using wavelets. By keeping the most important wavelet coefficients, we obtain a cleaned and de-noised signal. PCA is applied to this de-noised data to obtain a better fault detection. A MBPCA is also conducted using the de-noised signal, to improve fault identification. The combined multiblock fault identification method is demonstrated on the polyester film process.

Abstract

Many organic residues are being wasted since they are not given a comprehensive management; anaerobic digestion is an alternative to reduce the impact of these residues, and to produce biogas. The chapter includes the state of art about biogas and energy production, and later, the analysis of a study case focusing on the use of pulp and paper wastes to produce biogas. The study was carried out through anaerobic digestion at a bench scale using three temperature phases to treat primary and secondary sludge, establishing operational parameters such as temperature, retention time, and organic loadings. Monitoring of volume, methane concentration in the biogas, volatile solids reduction, volatile fatty acids during the process, the performance of the process in function of methane produced per volatile solids removed is calculated. This case study shows that it is feasible to use the sludge from the company’s wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) for the generation of biogas, thus reducing waste management problems.
