Intelligent management of cultural heritage is becoming a key tool to promote local development. Various resource revaluation initiatives, linked to river axes or extensive cultural landscapes, and also aimed to preserve the identity of the area, are being developed in Catalonia. This article discusses two novel figures, two industrial heritage master plans in the upper basins of the Llobregat and Ter-Freser river basins. La gestión inteligente del patrimonio cultural se esta convirtiendo en una herramienta clave para impulsar el desarrollo local. Diversas iniciativas de revalorización de recursos, vinculadas a ejes fluviales o a extensos paisajes culturales y encaminadas asimismo a preservar la identidad del territorio, están desarrollándose en Cataluña. Este artículo analiza dos figuras novedosas, dos planes directores urbanísticos del patrimonio industrial en las cuencas del alto Llobregat y del Ter-Freser.

Resumen El Plan Director Urbanístico (PDU) de las colonias del Llobregat pertenece a una nueva generación de planes supramunicipales impulsada por el Gobierno de la Generalitat de Catalunya durante la legislatura 2003-2007, con el fin de resolver los retos derivados del funcionamiento cada vez más integrado del territorio. Estos planes establecen marcos urbanísticos de referencia general para la coordinación del planeamiento de los municipios integrantes y se dirigen hacia la ordenación de las áreas urbanas más complejas, los territorios sometidos a mayor presión urbanística, y los espacios de especial valor ambiental y patrimonial. El PDU de las colonias del Llobregat aborda la preservación de un paisaje cultural singular. El presente trabajo analiza en primer lugar la naturaleza del Plan, que se ciñe a un ámbito geográfico unitario, reconociendo la sección del valle como marco territorial. Expone el complejo entramado de componentes físicos: relieve, infraestructuras, asentamientos y paisaje, y fija unos objetivos, promoción económica y mejora urbana, para conseguir desde un proyecto físico y político supramunicipal integrado. Abstract The Plan Director Urbanístico (Urban Director Plan) of the residential areas in Llobregat belongs to a new generation of supramunicipal plans promoted by the government of the Generalitat of Catalonia during the 2003-07 term, with the goal of achieving the challenges derived from the land operation, which is being increasingly integrated. These plans establish zoning frames of general reference for the coordination of the planning of the member regions, and are addressed to the development of the most complex urban areas, the zones suffering urban planning pressure, and the areas of special environmental and national value.The PDU of the residential areas in Llobregat deals with the maintenance of a unique cultural landscape.This essay analyzes in the first place the nature of the Plan, which is limited to a unified geographic area, establishing the valley as the territorial framework. It shows the complex territorial network of physical elements: relief, infrastructures, settlements and landscape, and it sets aims, economic promotion and urban improvement to be achieved by means of a physical and political integrated supramunicipal project.

La manca d’estudis sobre l’estat actual de les colònies tèxtils catalanes compromet la seva revaloració pel desconeixement de la nova realitat humana i econòmica. L’anàlisi de l’estructura de la propietat i les dinàmiques industrial i turística d’una mostra emblemàtica qüestiona la pretesa marginalitat de les colònies i aporta arguments per afrontar el seu futur amb confiança. La substitució del monocultiu tèxtil per una identitat productiva més diversa i sensible al patrimoni natural i cultural, anuncia un canvi de cicle. La falta de estudios sobre el estado actual de las colonias textiles catalanas dificulta su revalorización por el desconocimiento de la nueva realidad humana y económica. El análisis de la estructura de la propiedad y las dinámicas industrial y turística de una muestra emblemática pone en entredicho la pretendida marginalidad de las colonias y aporta argumentos para afrontar su futuro con confianza. There are few studies about current state of catalonian textile colonies. It risks its revalue due to the lack of knowledge about a new human and economic reality. An emblematic sample of colonies has been used to analyze property structure and industrial and touristic dynamics. The results argue about the assumed marginal role of colonies and rase up arguments to face the future with confidence. The textile activity is being sutstituted by a more diverse and sensitive productive identity, which augurs a new age. BACKGROUND: Study of the causes of the reduced levels of physical activity in patients with COPD has been scarce and limited to biological factors. AIM: To assess the relationship between novel socio-environmental factors, namely dog walking, grandparenting, neighbourhood deprivation, residential surrounding greenness and residential proximity to green or blue spaces, and amount and intensity of physical activity in COPD patients. METHODS: This cross-sectional study recruited 410 COPD patients from five Catalan municipalities. Dog walking and grandparenting were assessed by questionnaire. Neighbourhood deprivation was assessed using the census Urban Vulnerability Index, residential surrounding greenness by the satellite-derived Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, and residential proximity to green or blue spaces as living within 300 m of such a space. Physical activity was measured during 1 week by accelerometer to assess time spent on moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and vector magnitude units (VMU) per minute. FINDINGS: Patients were 85% male, had a mean (SD) age of 69 (9) years, and post-bronchodilator FEV1 of 56 (17) %pred. La construcción del territorio metropolitano, únicamente guiada por criterios funcionales, deriva en su empobrecimiento visual y cívico. En este sentido, resultan especialmente preocupantes los extensos agregados residenciales de baja densidad. El presente trabajo aporta bases técnicas para la regeneración de estos conjuntos desde una visión territorial intermedia atenta al patrimonio cultural. Para ello se analiza un caso emblemático de la Región Metropolitana de Barcelona donde el substrato agrario brinda oportunidades para la vertebración del continuo suburbano. El reciclaje de las redes de patrimonio se perfi la como una opción metodológica de interés por su capacidad de aportar pautas de orden y participación ciudadana. Los paisajes culturales adquieren un peso creciente en la ordenación del territorio postindustrial y su uso inteligente se ha convertido en un importante factor de desarrollo. Este trabajo presenta el caso del Parque Fluvial Colonias del Llobregat con el objetivo de ensayar un método de intervención acorde con la complejidad de estas áreas. La tradicional preservación del patrimonio mediante una zonificación restrictiva deja paso a un enfoque más dinámico y propositivo, fundamentado en el entendimiento del paisaje cultural como red de recursos e itinerarios. Leisure-Time Physical Activity (LTPA) in urban stream corridors is of paramount importance for health and wellbeing promotion among urban dwellers. LTPA experience, namely how (what, with whom, when and where) and why LTPA is practised in particular places, is influenced by various social and physical environmental factors which the stream users may perceive differently. Therefore, an improved understanding of how stream users perceive environmental factors may provide relevant insights and inform on strategies intended to support inclusive LTPA promotion. To this end, combining ecological models with a qualitative Geographic Information System (qGIS) methodology is valuable. The ecological models provide a comprehensive theoretical framework which helps understand the environmental factors that influence LTPA, whilst the qualitative research methods serve to reveal any hidden meanings related to individual experiences behind factors. The collected data combined with GIS, enable the exploration of subjective perceptions of the environment with reference to its spatial dimension. Therefore, this study assessed users’ perceptions of the environmental factors that influence LTPA experiences in the Caldes Stream corridor, in the Metropolitan Region of Barcelona. Accordingly, a sequential mixed methodology based on qualitative ecological approach integrated with GIS was developed in two phases. First, in-depth map-based and go-along interviews allowed for: 1) the categorization of the different types of stream users according to their characteristics and motivations for LTPA, 2) the identification of the social and physical environmental factors influencing LTPA, 3) the assessment of factors as either barriers or facilitators to LTPA for each type of stream user according to their perceptions (Paper 1). Secondly, given that the safety issue emerged as a key factor influencing women LTPA in the Caldes Stream corridor, the analysis of the relationship between environmental factors and women’s perceptions of safety was undertaken. In-depth interviews with women were further analysed for: 4) the identification of the environmental factors related to women’s perceptions of safety in the stream corridor, and 5) the design of a safety map able to represent both the women’s general and individual perceptions of safety. For the creation of this analytical tool environmental factors were translated into spatial indicators, women’s perceptions were geo-located, and the resultant data was integrated into qGIS (Paper 2). Findings of the present study provided a greater understanding of the different ways in which different users interpret and interact with urban stream corridors when practising LTPA. Specifically, different types of users perceived environmental factors influencing LTPA as either barriers or facilitators contradictorily or coincidentally depending on their motivations for LTPA and their gender. The major conflicts related to divergent perceptions between genders depended on perceptions of safety (Paper 1). Perceptions of safety among women were related to environmental factors, yet they were mediated by women’s socio-cultural background and everyday practices. Against this backdrop, the safety map based on a qualitative GIS approach designed for this study, allowed the assessment of the macro-scale spatial indicators of the environmental factors and the micro-scale of women’s narratives on perceptions of safety from an integrated perspective. The macro-scale perspective provided a general explanation for the phenomenon and helped visualise conflicting domains of interventions. The micro-scale produced deeper and detailed insights into the perception of safety by comparing the big picture with women’s narratives (Paper 2). These findings suggest that 1) the characterisation of types of users according to their motivations for practicing LTPA in green environments and 2) their gender perspective should be at the forefront of inclusive LTPA promotion strategies. At this regard, qGIS analytical tools aimed at identifying the particular needs of the specific types of users could support the customisation of interventions by providing knowledge on the tangible and intangible dimensions associated to the different LTPA experiences. Basing on this knowledge, LTPA promotion policies should combine the provision of physical infrastructure suitable for the different types of users, and long-term educational programs addressed to overcome the limiting effects of certain socio-cultural backgrounds. This research has shown that the thorough understanding of the users’ LTPA experience in urban stream corridors provides significant knowledge to inform policies for inclusive LTPA promotion, thus mitigating the risk of health inequalities among different types of stream users.
