SUMMARY Strong ground motion prediction is a fundamental topic in the field of engineering seismology, as it provides the input for seismic hazard studies as well as for vulnerability and risk assessment. The spectral modelling approach can provide a realistic representation of ground motion behaviour, possibly including its frequency variability, as the full ground motion spectrum is modelled analytically. In its parametric form, this approach requires a careful calibration of the model, starting from empirical observations and fitting the source, path and the site-specific response assuming a predefined physically constrained functional form. This study explores the use of spectral modelling for a study area in northeast Italy, at the border with Slovenia and Austria. It is based on the parametrization of seismic source and attenuation effects, and it also allows to estimate site effects, as a by-product. The main innovation with respect to standard spectral modelling is the inclusion of dedicated uncertainty estimators in the functional form. Parametric inversion of source and path attenuation is performed on a data set corresponding to 23 events recorded by 24 stations located within the target area. The modular inversion setup allows to properly include a priori constraints in the mathematical solution to reduce trade-off between variables. Spectral amplification at each site is defined with respect to the network average rock condition, and its frequency-dependent component is estimated from residual analysis after the inversion. Inverted source parameters are comparable with reference values for the region available from literature (with seismic moments between ${10}^{13}$ and ${10}^{15}$ N·m, and related stress drop values in the range $1.5 - 15.5\ {\rm{MPa}}$); the same is also true for average attenuation properties (e.g. apparent frequency-independent attenuation quality factor ${Q}_0$ of $1145$). For a selection of stations with available characterization based on different methods, a preliminary comparison of site-specific response functions shows that both the frequency value and amplitude of the main amplification peaks are well recovered. These encouraging results open to the possibility of subsequently using the calibrated model for forward modelling purposes.

In this paper, we present an open-source end-to-end Python tool for ground motion record selection and scaling for non-linear dynamic analysis of structures. The tool, named haselREC (HAzard-based SELection of RECords), has been formulated to be executed after performing a probabilistic seismic hazard and disaggregation analysis with OpenQuake, an open-source hazard and risk calculation engine developed by the Global Earthquake Model (GEM) Foundation. In addition to common intensity measures, such as peak ground acceleration and spectral acceleration, haselREC can perform ground motion record selection using average spectral acceleration, which can be advantageous when assessing multiple structures and to account for uncertainty on the conditioning response period. Moreover, haselREC can be directly linked to the web services of the European Strong Motion database for automatic download and scaling of records. The Python tool was designed to be modular, which facilitates its integration in third party scripts for automated record selection and scaling in hazard analysis studies. Here, we describe the main features of the software package in detail and provide an application example for the regional assessment of existing bridge structures.

Local site evaluation is an essential step in understanding the amplification of seismic motion induced by the complex geological structure and their estimation for future strong earthquakes in urban regions. One of the critical parameters on evaluating amplification effects is the depth of the geophysical bedrock, whose interface to soft sediments is responsible for the development of destructive resonance phenomena. The present study is focused on the estimation of the geophysical bedrock depth along the extra-Carpathian area of Romania (Moesian Platform and surroundings) by correlating and interpolating the results obtained from single station measurements with the available geological/geophysical data. Each site was investigated through the computation of horizontal-to-vertical (H/V) spectral ratios from three-component single station measurements of ambient vibrations. The geophysical bedrock depth was computed using a two-step inversion scheme, based on the retrieval of the Rayleigh-wave ellipticity peak at each seismic station using a regional generic velocity profile. The fundamental frequency of resonance reaches the lowest value in the deepest side (0.07 Hz) and is rising to 13 Hz in the South of the Moesian Platform, where a shallow bedrock is present. The computed bedrock depths (from 30 to ~ 3100 m) show a dipping tendency towards the Southern Carpathians and complex features such as local outcrops and lateral depth variations superpose this gradually dipping trend. In the Carpathian foreland, the bedrock is interpreted as the transition between different sediment layers of Neogene, while outside this area as the Neogene—Cretaceous transition. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG. African seismicity is predominantly localized along the East African Rift System (EARS), which is the major active tectonic feature of Sub-Saharan Africa. Besides the EARS, however, significant seismicity also occurs along a wide belt bounding the Mediterranean coastline. This tectonically active region extends discontinuously from Morocco to Egypt and its activity is controlled by the complex interaction between the Nubian and Eurasian plates, varying from transpression in the Atlas orogen in the west to transtension in the east. A record of large earthquake events is documented for the whole region, some of them causing moderate to severe levels of damage, mostly because of the high vulnerability of local buildings and structures, a condition which is still largely persistent in many areas. Currently, a number of seismic hazard models exist at local and national scales for North Africa, developed within independent projects and created using inhomogeneous data sources and different processing techniques. Unfortunately, such diversity makes their direct comparison problematic, obscuring the differences in seismic hazard across neighbouring areas and preventing the development of comprehensive long-term risk mitigation strategies. In fact, the last effort to produce a homogenized model for the whole Africa continent dates back to the GSHAP project, which is almost 20 years old. The creation of a unique seismic hazard model for North Africa, uniform across countries, is therefore a main concern. Since its inception, the Global Earthquake Model Foundation (GEM) is committed to the creation of a worldwide mosaic of high-quality, reproducible and openly accessible seismic hazard models, uniformly represented using the format adopted by the OpenQuake engine (OQ), a state-of-the-art, free and open-source software package for seismic hazard and risk assessment. We describe the development of a new comprehensive PSHA model for North Africa using GEM tools. The source model combines active faults and distributed seismicity, the former constrained from published geological descriptions and geodetic data, while the latter from the harmonisation of published earthquake catalogues.

In this study, we present the work done to review the existing historical earthquake information of the Dead Sea Transform Fault Zone (DSTFZ). Several studies from various sources have been collected and reassessed, with the ultimate goal of creating of new homogenized parametric earthquake catalog for the region. We analyze 244 earthquakes between 31 BC and 1900, which are associated with the geographical buffer extending from 27 N to 36 N and from 31 E to 39 E. Of these, 93 were considered real seismic events with moment magnitude (Mw) greater than 5 that indeed occurred within this zone. While we relied on past parametric data and did not assign new macroseismic intensities, magnitude values, or epicenters for several controversial events, we did however resort to the primary sources to obtain a more critical perspective for the various assigned macroseismic intensities. In order to validate the derived parametric information, we tried to associate the events present in the historical records, with any evidence coming from past field investigations, i.e., geological or archaeological studies. Acknowledging the uneven quality and quantity of data reporting each event, we provided each entry with an uncertainty range estimate. Our catalog lists 33 events of Mw ≥ 6 absent from the latest published compilation with compatible time span and areal coverage. The whole catalog is considered complete down to Mw 7 and in certain areas down to Mw 6 after the year 1000, with majority of the larger earthquakes located in the part of DSTFZ, which extends from the southeast part of Dead Sea lake till Antioch.

The National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics – OGS is engaged in a wide range of educational and training activities for more than a decade, mainly focused on seismic risk mitigation through data acquisition in the field and practical stages. To by-pass the restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, in 2021 OGS started a new project, deployed in fully remote mode, to involve high-school students and increase their risk awareness and preparedness. The Project, named “CEDAS: building CEnsus for seismic Damage Assessment”, consists in the collection and elaboration of data which is included in the exposure database. Knowing the type and distribution of exposed assets, in particular buildings, is thus paramount for effective mitigation of disasters. The students classified and georeferenced the main residential buildings typologies of northeastern Italy, a seismically active area which suffered consequences from strong past earthquakes. During the project, 170 high school students collected reports on more than 3200 buildings, performing a statistical analysis of their results.The project activities consisted of two main phases: plenary virtual training meetings and individual data collection and processing. Tutors held intermediate meetings with students for verification and discussion and brainstorming sessions with their professors to discuss the efficacy of their actions. All the meetings, including those for direct training of students, were delivered in virtual mode. The training material (including the meeting recordings) was then shared remotely with students and teachers through cloud solutions, and remained available during the whole project. In this way the students were able to both collect basic data for exposure assessment, and carry out their preliminary analysis using standard statistical tools available online. The comparative data analysis, performed for selected sub-areas and for the overall dataset, allowed them for some basic interpretation and a better understanding of the exposed assets situation in sub-areas. The CEDAS project, though motivated by the need to provide a practical solution to the COVID-19-related restrictions, went well beyond the emergency situation, as it demonstrated that training activities can contribute to both enhancing the available exposure dataset and to increasing risk awareness among young students in the region.

The 2013 European Seismic Hazard Model (ESHM13) results from a community-based probabilistic seismic hazard assessment supported by the EU-FP7 project “Seismic Hazard Harmonization in Europe” (SHARE, 2009–2013). The ESHM13 is a consistent seismic hazard model for Europe and Turkey which overcomes the limitation of national borders and includes a through quantification of the uncertainties. It is the first completed regional effort contributing to the “Global Earthquake Model” initiative. It might serve as a reference model for various applications, from earthquake preparedness to earthquake risk mitigation strategies, including the update of the European seismic regulations for building design (Eurocode 8), and thus it is useful for future safety assessment and improvement of private and public buildings. Although its results constitute a reference for Europe, they do not replace the existing national design regulations that are in place for seismic design and construction of buildings. The ESHM13 represents a significant improvement compared to previous efforts as it is based on (1) the compilation of updated and harmonised versions of the databases required for probabilistic seismic hazard assessment, (2) the adoption of standard procedures and robust methods, especially for expert elicitation and consensus building among hundreds of European experts, (3) the multi-disciplinary input from all branches of earthquake science and engineering, (4) the direct involvement of the CEN/TC250/SC8 committee in defining output specifications relevant for Eurocode 8 and (5) the accounting for epistemic uncertainties of model components and hazard results. We explore the role of scenario‐dependent site amplification on local magnitude (ML) and possible bias it may introduce. ML is strongly influenced by local site response, which is conditioned by unique local geological factors. To isolate the effect of the near‐surface amplification on ML, relative differences between station‐specific ML at the surface and borehole (ΔML,STN) are studied for 34 sites from the KiK‐net network, Japan. We find strong moment magnitude (M) dependent scenario‐specific ΔML,STN trends over the range 3.0

The Department of Geophysics, University of Zagreb and the Italian National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics (OGS) installed on January 4th 2021, five temporary seismic stations near the town of Petrinja, Croatia, in the aftermath of the 29 Decembre 2020 Mw 6.4 earthquake. The stations equipped with a seismometer and a strong motion sensor, recorded the aftershock sequence beginning six days after the mainshock allowing to augment the permanent seismic network in the area improving the azimuthal coverage and providing additional near‐field observations.In this presentation we summarize the motivation and goals of the deployment; details regarding the station installation, instrumentation, and configurations and observations from the network. The collected data set will be useful for carrying out several seismological studies including the analysis of variability of strong ground motions in near field, the determination of the aftershocks source parameters, the estimation (if any) of rupture directivity of small events, the clustering of events in space and time, the better imaging of the fault zone, the evolution of crustal properties within and outside of the fault zone.

The rapid availability of reliable damage statistics, after the occurrence of a major earthquake, is an essential mitigation strategy to drive and support emergency intervention operations. Unfortunately, the latency in collecting and organizing actual damage information has a substantial impact on the efficiency of the initial phases of the intervention framework. To speedup preliminary management operations, a quick, although, coarse prediction of the expected damage is highly desirable.For this purpose, we have developed a system for rapid damage estimation. The system, presently implemented for the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, relies on the existing seismological monitoring infrastructure of the National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics (OGS), which is responsible for delivering earthquake alerts in northeastern Italy.In case of a major earthquake event, the predicted damage is automatically computed using the OpenQuake software engine by means of ad hoc structural exposure and fragility models developed for the region. Damage calculations rely on a combination of actual observed ground motion from the stations of the OGS seismological network and empirical prediction using the ShakeMaps software developed by the U.S. Geological Survey. The resulting damage scenario, aggregated at municipality level, is finally delivered to the control room of the regional civil protection in support of early intervention activities.Although, the system is presently still under active development, a number of experimental trials have confirmed the reliability and the usefulness of the proposed approach. We are confident that the current research will contribute in mitigating the impact of possible future damaging earthquakes by (1) guiding targeted postevent emergency interventions, (2) increasing the preparedness and response capacity of emergency teams and population through preparatory training activities, and (3) supporting the decision-making process during the recovery phase, hence enhancing resilience.

In this article, we describe the infrastructure developed and managed by the Italian National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics – OGS for the seismological and geodetic monitoring of northeastern Italy. The infrastructure was constituted in response to the ML 6.4 Friuli destructive earthquake of 1976, with the main mandate of supporting civil protection emergency activities. The OGS monitoring infrastructure is presently composed of a seismometric and a strong-motion network, complemented by a number of Global Navigation Satellite Systems stations, each delivering observational data in real time, which are collected and processed by the headquarters of the Center for Seismological Research of OGS in Udine. The OGS networks operate in close cooperation with Italian and international networks from neighboring countries, within the framework of the agreements for real-time data exchange, to obtain improved rapid earthquake location and magnitude estimations. Information regarding seismic events is released to the public through a dedicated web portal and, since 2013, through social media. Aside from the standard monitoring activities (>30,000 events have been recorded since 1976), the OGS has progressively increased the number of services to the public and to the Civil Protection of the Friuli Venezia Giulia and Veneto regions. The high availability of good quality data has resulted in the enhancement of scientific products, including advanced seismological studies of the area, spanning broadly from seismic source characterization to engineering seismology. In the future, the OGS networks are expected to further contribute to the development of seismological research and monitoring infrastructures of the Central European region.

A new seismic hazard model for Cairo, the capital city of Egypt is developed herein based on comprehensive consideration of uncertainties in various components of the probabilistic seismic hazard analysis. The proposed seismic hazard model is developed from an updated catalogue of historical and instrumental seismicity, geodetic strain rates derived from GPS-based velocity-field of the crust, and the geologic slip rates of active faults. The seismic source model consists of area sources and active faults characterised to forecast the seismic productivity in the region. Ground motion prediction models are selected to describe the expected ground motion at the sites of interest. The model accounts for inherent epistemic uncertainties of statistical earthquake recurrence; maximum magnitude; ground motion prediction models, and their propagation toward the obtained results. The proposed model is applied to a site-specific hazard analysis for Kottamiya, Rehab City and Zahraa-Madinat-Nasr (hereinafter referred to as Zahraa) to the East of Cairo (Egypt). The site-specific analysis accounts for the site response, through the parameterization of the sites in terms of average 30-m shear-wave velocity (Vs30). The present seismic hazard model can be considered as a reference model for earthquake risk mitigation and proper resilience planning.

In December 2018, at the conclusion of its second implementation phase, the Global Earthquake Model (GEM) Foundation released its first version of a map outlining the spatial distribution of seismic hazard at a global scale. The map is the result of an extensive, joint effort combining the results obtained from a collection of probabilistic seismic hazard models, called the GEM Mosaic. Together, the map and the underlying database of models provide an up-to-date view of the earthquake threat globally. In addition, using the Mosaic, a synopsis of the current state-of-practice in modeling probabilistic seismic hazard at national and regional scales is possible. The process adopted for the compilation of the Mosaic adhered to the maximum extent possible to GEM’s principles of collaboration, inclusiveness, transparency, and reproducibility. For each region, priority was given to seismic hazard models either developed by well-recognized national agencies or by large collaborative projects involving local scientists. The version of the GEM Mosaic presented herein contains 30 probabilistic seismic hazard models, 14 of which represent national or sub-national models; the remainder are regional-scale models. We discuss the general qualities of these models, the underlying framework of the database, and the outlook for the Mosaic’s utility and its future versions.

Seismic microzonation represents a basic tool for prevention activity planning and land management. An extensive and detailed microzonation study was performed with reference to the territory of the Municipality of Cavezzo, damaged during the seismic sequence hitting Emilia-Romagna Region, Northern Italy, in 2012. In this paper, we discuss the work carried out to characterize the spatial variability of ground motion amplification due to local soil conditions in the municipality area. An inter- and multi-disciplinary approach is presented, involving geotechnical engineers, geophysicists, geologists and seismologists from different institutions, to thoroughly characterize the territory using complementary techniques with different level of resolution and confidence. A considerable amount of geomorphological, geological, hydrogeological, seismological, geotechnical and geophysical investigations was collected and processed for the purpose. A GIS-based (Geographic Information System) platform was initially setup to manage the gathered data, which now includes the results of about 1000 geotechnical and geophysical tests. Such an extended dataset was then used as a primary constraint for the creation of a comprehensive pseudo-3D geotechnical and seismo-stratigraphic model of the territory, consisting of a dense grid of one-dimensional vertical profiles to depict the variability of the soil properties over the area. The model was finally used as input for linear-equivalent ground response analysis. For the calculation of the amplification factors, special emphasis was given to the treatment and propagation of the uncertainties of the model parameters, whose different realizations have been accounted through a logic tree approach.

In the framework of the renewal project of the Swiss Strong Motion Network (SSMNet), a procedure for site characterization has been established. The aim of the procedure was to systematically derive realistic 1D velocity profiles at each station. It is mainly based on the analysis of surface waves, particularly from passive experiments, and includes cross checks of the derived amplification functions with those obtained through spectral modeling of recorded earthquakes. The systematic use of three component surface‐wave analysis, allowing the derivation of both Rayleigh and Love dispersion curves, also contributes to the improvement of the quality of the retrieved profiles. The procedure is applied to the 30 SSMNet stations installed on various site types within the project, covering different aspects of seismic risk. The characterization of these 30 sites gives an overview of the variety of possible effects of surface geology on ground motion in the Alpine area. Such effects ranged from deamplification at hard‐rock sites to amplification up to a factor of 15 in lacustrine sediments with respect to the Swiss reference rock velocity model. The derived velocity profiles are shown to reproduce observed amplification functions from empirical spectral modeling. Although many sites are found to exhibit 1D behavior, the procedure allows the detection and qualification of 2D and 3D effects. The sites are therefore classified with respect to the occurrence of 2D/3D resonance and edge‐generated surface waves. In addition to the large and deeply incised alpine valleys of the Rhone, the Rhine, and the Aar, smaller structures such as local alpine valleys and alluvial fans are shown to exhibit 2D/3D behavior.

In the framework of the definition of a new building code for dams, the Swiss Federal Office for Energy (SFOE) has commissioned a study on the effect of site response variability on elastic design spectra for different soil conditions and seismic hazard scenarios. The goal of the study presented herein is the definition of a new set of site-dependent design spectra for horizontal and vertical ground-motion, whose design shape (scaled to peak ground acceleration) is to be compared with the present Swiss normative (SIA261, revision 2014) [43]. To accomplish the task, we have created a large dataset of Fourier-domain seismic amplification functions by collecting empirical observations and site-specific ground motion models from both measured and stochastically generated velocity profiles. Fourier spectra were then converted to response spectral amplification using a combination of spectral modeling techniques and random vibration theory. Average amplification models are thus derived for different soil classes (SIA class A–E), according to the Swiss building code provisions, and for a set of magnitude-distance combinations chosen as representative of the Swiss hazard disaggregation scenario at the Sion site in Switzerland. Finally, the response spectral amplification functions from the database have been combined with the normalized uniform hazard spectra computed at Sion for return periods of 500, 1000, 5000 and 10,000 years. Based on those results, a new set of design spectral shapes is proposed for the different SIA soil classes, accounting for investigated scenario variability and including a reasoned level of conservatism dependent on the distribution of the site-specific amplification models. The proposed methodology targets the reduction in uncertainty associated with seismic design and, although originally focused and applied to the Swiss norm, it could be potentially applied to any national seismic code as a tool for developing, updating or benchmarking the current provisions in a holistic framework.

Defining the reference rock or soil condition related to ground‐motion prediction is an important aspect of seismic‐hazard analysis. In a previous study by the authors, a method was proposed to establish a reference rock profile for Switzerland through the comparison of empirical amplification functions with shear‐wave velocity profiles at 27 selected sites of the Swiss National Seismic Network. The retrieved velocity profile served as reference for a regional ground‐motion prediction equation. However, a lacking piece of information remained: the anelastic attenuation for such a reference profile. Reference attenuation is essential to correctly model and interpret amplification at high frequencies. In the present study we extended our approach to simultaneously model both the reference shear‐wave velocity profile and the corresponding attenuation for Japan. We compared site‐specific attenuation measurements with quarter‐wavelength average velocities at 36 soil and rock sites from the Japanese KiK‐net strong‐motion network. The selected sites are characterized by a lack of observed resonance phenomena in order to avoid trade‐off between amplification and attenuation effects. We establish a parametric model through regression analysis. The resulting model gives us the possibility to estimate anelastic attenuation of a rock site with a given velocity profile and provides the base for host‐to‐target adjustments of real or modeled ground motion.

The East African Rift System is the major active tectonic feature of the Sub-Saharan Africa region. Although the seismicity level of this divergent plate boundary can be described as moderate, several damaging earthquakes have been reported in historical times, and the seismic risk is exacerbated by the high vulnerability of the local buildings and structures. Formulation and enforcement of national seismic codes is therefore an essential future risk mitigation strategy. Nonetheless, a reliable risk assessment cannot be done without the calibration of an updated seismic hazard model for the region. A major limitation affecting the assessment of seismic hazard in Sub-Saharan Africa is the lack of basic information needed to construct source and ground motion models. The historical earthquake record is sparse, with significant variation in completeness over time across different regions. The instrumental catalogue is complete down to sufficient magnitude only for a relatively short time span. In addition, mapping of seismogenically active faults is still an on-going task, and few faults in the region are sufficiently constrained as to allow them to be directly represented within the seismic hazard model. Recent studies have identified major seismogenic lineaments, but there is substantial lack of kinematic information for intermediate-to-small scale tectonic features, information that is essential for the proper calibration of earthquake recurrence models. In this study, we use new data and Global Earthquake Model (GEM) computational tools such as the Hazard Modeller’s Toolkit and the OpenQuake engine to perform a pilot study of the seismic hazard associated with the East African Rift. The hazard model obtained has been created using the most recent information available from scientific literature, global bulletins and local earthquake catalogues, including those from AfricaArray projects. In this report, in accordance with the GEM philosophy, we describe in detail all working assumptions, main processing steps, data analyses and interpretations used for the model setup.

The main scope of the InterPACIFIC (Intercomparison of methods for site parameter and velocity profile characterization) project is to assess the reliability of in-hole and surface-wave methods, used for estimating shear wave velocity. Three test-sites with different subsurface conditions were chosen: a soft soil, a stiff soil and a rock outcrop. This paper reports the surface-wave methods results. Specifically 14 teams of expert users analysed the same experimental surface-wave datasets, consisting of both passive and active data. Each team adopted their own strategy to retrieve the dispersion curve and the shear-wave velocity profile at each site. Despite different approaches, the dispersion curves are quite in agreement with each other. Conversely, the shear-wave velocity profiles show a certain variability that increases in correspondence of major stratigraphic interfaces. This larger variability is mainly due to non-uniqueness of the solution and lateral variability. As expected, the observed variability in V-s,V-30 estimatesis small, as solution non-uniqueness plays a limited role. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A predictive equation to obtain the vertical‐to‐horizontal ratio (V/H) of ground motion for rock sites has been established in a previous article. The method was based on the comparison between V/H of Fourier and response spectra of earthquakes with the quarter‐wavelength average velocity at discrete frequencies. We extend this approach to account for resonance phenomena at soft‐sediment sites. In order to do so, a new parameter is defined and included in the comparison with the V/H spectra. The new parameter is directly derived from the quarter‐wavelength velocity and represents the frequency‐dependent seismic impedance contrast at the site. We show that extending the correlation in this three‐dimensional space is beneficial to reconstruct V/H of the 5%‐damped response spectra at soft‐sediment sites ( V S 30

SUMMARY The sediments underlying the city of Lucerne (Switzerland) consisting of fluvio-lacustrine deposits of Quaternary age have the potential to produce strong amplification of the seismic wavefield. To obtain a reliable estimation of the deep soil structure, we combine different methodologies based on ambient noise recordings, such as single station horizontal to vertical ratios and three-component array analysis. Two novel techniques to estimate Rayleigh-wave ellipticity from ambient noise recordings are tested. These are based on a single- and a multistation approach, respectively. The first utilizes the continuous wavelet transform to perform a decomposition of the noise wavefield and to isolate and extract the Rayleigh-wave contribution. The second, conversely, relies on a high-resolution f–k method to achieve the same result. We compare the results from the two techniques to provide an evaluation of their capabilities and limitations. A two-step inversion scheme is then presented to improve resolution on the bedrock depth. In particular, the surface wave dispersion information is initially used to constrain the soft sediment part, while the Rayleigh-wave ellipticity peak is subsequently used for constraining the bedrock depth. It is shown that such an approach is beneficial to map the bedrock geometry over dense urban areas. The output velocity model is then used to compute the local seismic amplification by means of gridded 1-D approximation.

Ratios of vertical-to-horizontal ( V / H ) ground motion are important for the computation of scenario-compatible vertical design spectra. They are therefore a crucial aspect of seismic hazard analysis. We characterize the V / H ratio at rock sites in terms of the recording site’s average quarter-wavelength velocity. A predictive equation is presented, which can be used for reconstructing the expected V / H ratio of the 5%-damped response and Fourier spectra for rock sites, given a known shear-wave velocity profile. The equation is based on the regression analysis of two datasets: one from Switzerland and one from Japan. The two datasets allow us to analyze well-characterized hard-rock sites in Switzerland using small earthquakes ( M w >2), while the magnitude range is increased up to events of M w 7.3 using strong-motion recordings from Japan’s KiK-net seismic network. It is shown that a correlation exists between the quarter-wavelength velocity at a given frequency and the V / H ground-motion ratio. Small differences, possibly due to velocity measurement bias or topographical and basin effects, existed when analyzing the individual regional datasets. Apart from near-source distances ( R V / H , no clear magnitude- or distance-dependence of the V / H ratios is present in either of the datasets of earthquake recordings. We show that the same correlation exists for response spectra and Fourier spectra of recorded ground motion. A similar correlation was derived for ambient vibrations recorded at Swiss station sites, resulting in larger values of V / H at a given frequency and thereby indicating that V / H is sensitive to the composition of the wave field. Finally, uncertainties in the V / H models are presented. We separate the sources of uncertainty into source and site-specific components and present the single-site sigma uncertainty measure for site-specific hazard analyses.

The definition of a reference bedrock condition representative of a region of interest is of great significance in seismic-hazard assessment. It is highly beneficial when ground-motion prediction equations are referenced to a specific site condition, particularly in the case of site-specific seismic-hazard analyses. When known, the effect of any given site with respect to the reference can then be applied to the predicted ground motion. However, the choice of a reference velocity profile is not straightforward, mainly due to the high variability of the velocity structure in the shallower layers. A new method to define the regional reference rock profile is proposed. The method relates quarter-wavelength average velocity at a site to frequency-dependent amplification. A reference bedrock velocity profile can then be directly defined in relation to expected amplification characteristics over a number of sites. We compare 27 quarter-wavelength velocity profiles from seismic station locations in Switzerland with empirical amplification functions derived from spectral modeling. From this comparison, a set of frequency-dependent calibration relationships is established. Assuming that the reference profile is defined by a lack of any relative amplification, the quarter-wavelength velocity profile that corresponds to unitary spectral amplification can be extracted. The reference velocity profile can then be obtained through an inversion procedure and defines the reference for the ground-motion prediction equation (GMPE). The proposed reference velocity profile is compared with previous reference velocity profiles. A good agreement is found between the different methods. Additionally, an estimation of the transfer function for the Swiss reference rock condition is provided. This can be used to correct recorded or estimated spectral amplitudes for the local response of the reference site. Finally, it is shown that the coefficients from the aforementioned correlations can be used to estimate a generic amplification function at any site with a known quarter-wavelength velocity profile.

A comprehensive seismic survey was conducted with the aim of characterising one of the Swiss Digital Seismic Network stations in northern Switzerland. Both active (P- and S-wave refraction tomography, surface-wave analysis, vertical seismic profiling) and passive methodologies (wavelet decomposition, Horizontal-to-Vertical Spectral Ratio, three-component frequency-wavenumber analysis) were jointly considered in order to solve the intrinsic non-uniqueness of the solution and determine a consistent subsurface model free from ambiguities, eventually used for the assessment of the local site amplification.

A series of investigations has been carried out over the last decade in Europe aimed at deriving quantitative information on site amplification from non-invasive techniques, based principally on surface wave interpretations of ambient noise measurements. The present paper focuses on their key outcomes regarding three main topics. First, methodological, hardware and software developments focusing on the acquisition and the processing of both single point and array microtremor measurements, led to an efficient tool with in situ control and processing, giving rise to robust and reproducible results. A special attention has been devoted to the derivation and use of the Rayleigh wave ellipticity. Second, the reliability of these new tools has been assessed through a thorough comparison with borehole measurements for a representative – though limited – set of sites located in Southern Europe, spanning from stiff to soft, and shallow to thick. Finally, correlations between the site parameters available from such non-invasive techniques, and the actual site amplification factors as measured with standard techniques, are derived from a comprehensive analysis of the Japanese KIKNET data. This allows to propose alternative, simple site characterization providing an improved variance reduction compared with the “classical” VS30 classification. While these results could pave the road for the next generation of building codes, they can also be used now for regulatory site classification and microzonation studies, in view of improved mapping and estimation of site amplification factors, and for the characterization of existing strong motion sites.
