Magnetite microinclusions in metamorphic harzburgites, derived from the deserpentinization of the subducted hydrated oceanic lithospheric mantle, were examined by synchrotron Mössbauer spectroscopy to investigate the chemical and magnetic environments of the Fe nuclei. The data reveal a critical susceptibility of the octahedral sites of the cubic structure of magnetite to chemical variations, which, in turn, influences their magnetic properties in terms of hyperfine magnetic field intensity and direction. Micromagnetites display substantial remanent magnetization; however, the magnetic moment direction can be significantly different among inclusions, even for those in close spatial proximity. This evidence points to a kinetic control of the composition of microcavities at mantle depths, implying that the use of the remanent magnetic field of included magnetic phases to infer large-scale implications on the Earth's magnetic field requires the development of complex geochemical and geodynamical models.

Its unique X-ray beam parameters enable groundbreaking experiments in matter at extreme conditions at the High Energy Density (HED) scientific instrument. The performance of the HED instrument during its first two years of operation, its scientific remit, as well as ongoing installations towards full operation are presented. Scientific goals of HED include the investigation of extreme states of matter created by intense laser pulses, diamond anvil cells, or pulsed magnets, and ultrafast X-ray methods that allow their diagnosis using self-amplified spontaneous emission between 5 and 25 keV, coupled with X-ray monochromators and optional seeded beam operation. Owing to their stability at mantle conditions, recently discovered iron carbonates with tetrahedrally coordinated carbon atoms are candidates for carbon storage in the deep Earth. The carbonates' iron oxidation and spin state at extreme pressure and temperature conditions contribute to the redox conditions and element partitioning in the deep mantle. By laser heating FeCO$_3$ at pressures of about 83 GPa, Fe$^{3+}_4$C$_3$O$_{12}$ and Fe$^{2+}_2$Fe$^{3+}_2$C$_4$O$_{13}$ were synthesized and then investigated by x-ray emission spectroscopy to elucidate their spin state, both in situ and temperature quenched. Our experimental results show both phases in a high-spin state at all pressures and over the entire temperature range investigated, i.e., up to 3000 K. The spin state is conserved after temperature quenching. A formation path is favored where Fe$^{3+}_4$C$_3$O$_{12}$ forms first and then reacts to Fe$^{2+}_2$Fe$^{3+}_2$C$_4$O$_{13}$, most likely accompanied by the formation of oxides. Density functional theory calculations of Fe$^{2+}_2$Fe$^{3+}_2$C$_4$O$_{13}$ at 80 GPa confirm the experimental findings with both ferric and ferrous iron in high-spin state with antiferromagnetic order at 80 GPa. As the intercrystalline cation partitioning between the Fe-bearing carbonates and the surrounding perovskite and ferropericlase depends on the spin state of the iron, an understanding of the redox conditions prevalent in subducted slab regions in the lower mantle has to take the latter into account. Thanks to the physical strength of diamonds and their relatively unreactive chemical nature, their mineral inclusions may remain exceptionally preserved from alteration processes and chemical exchanges with surrounding minerals, fluids and/or melts following diamond formation. Cr-bearing spinels are relatively common inclusions found in peridotitic diamonds and important oxybarometers providing information about the oxygen fugacity (fO2) of their source mantle rocks. Here, we investigated a magnesiochromite–olivine touching pair in a diamond from the Udachnaya kimberlite (Siberia) by in situ single-crystal X-ray diffraction and energy-domain synchrotron Mössbauer spectroscopy, aiming to constrain the physical–chemical conditions of diamond formation and to explore the redox state of this portion of the Siberian craton when the diamond was formed. The P–T–fO2 entrapment conditions of the inclusion pair, determined by thermo- and oxybarometric analyses, are ∼ 5.7(0.4) GPa and ∼ 1015(50) ∘C (although entrapment at higher T and re-equilibration during subsequent mantle storage are also possible) and fO2 near the enstatite–magnesite–olivine–diamond (EMOD) buffer. The determined fO2 is similar to, or slightly more oxidized than, those of xenoliths from Udachnaya, but whilst the xenoliths last equilibrated with the surrounding mantle just prior to their entrainment in the kimberlite at ∼ 360 Ma, the last equilibration of the inclusion pair is much older, occurring at 3.5–3.1, ∼ 2 or ∼ 1.8 Ga before final encapsulation in its host diamond. Hence, the similarity between xenoliths and inclusion fO2 values indicates that the modern redox state of this portion of the Siberian lithosphere was likely attained relatively early after its formation and may have persisted for billions of years after diamond formation, at least at the local scale. Moreover, the oxygen fugacity determination for the inclusion pair provides direct evidence of diamond formation near the EMOD buffer and is consistent with recent models suggesting relatively oxidized, water-rich CHO fluids as the most likely parents for lithospheric diamonds.

Much of Earth’s carbon is thought to have been stripped away from the silicate mantle by dense metallic-iron to form the core1. However, recent studies2,3 suggest that a considerable part of it could have remained stranded in the deep mantle due to a change in its affinity to dissolve into iron metal-alloys at the extreme pressures and temperatures of the deep Earth. The underlying physical phenomena that would render carbon less siderophile at extreme conditions remain elusive. Here we describe the compaction mechanisms and structural evolution of a simple carbonate glass to deep mantle pressures by monitoring the evolution of the electronic state and atomic structure of the glass upon compression. Our new experiments demonstrate a pressure-induced change in hybridization of carbon from sp2 to sp3 starting at 40 GPa, due to the conversion of [3]CO32- groups into [4]CO44- units, which is completed at ~112 GPa. The pressure-induced increase of carbon coordination number from three to four increases possibilities for carbon-oxygen interactions with lower mantle silicates and increased compatibility4,5. Tetracarbonate melts provide a mechanism for changing the presumed siderophile nature of deep carbon and instead imply storage of carbon in the deep mantle as a possible source for carbon-rich emissions registered at the surface in intra-plate and near-ridge hot spots6,7

SiO(2 )is the main component of silicate melts and thus controls their network structure and physical properties. The compressibility and viscosities of melts at depth are governed by their short range atomic and electronic structure. We measured the O K-edge and the Si L-2,L-3-edge in silica up to 110 GPa using X-ray Raman scattering spectroscopy, and found a striking match to calculated spectra based on structures from molecular dynamic simulations. Between 20 and 27 GPa, Si-[4] species are converted into a mixture of Si-[5] and Si-[6] species and between 60 and 70 GPa, Si-[6] becomes dominant at the expense of Si-[5] with no further increase up to at least 110 GPa. Coordination higher than 6 is only reached beyond 140 GPa, corroborating results from Brillouin scattering. Network modifying elements in silicate melts may shift this change in coordination to lower pressures and thus magmas could be denser than residual solids at the depth of the core-mantle boundary.

Iron oxides are among the major constituents of the deep Earth’s interior. Among them, the epsilon phase of Fe2O3 is one of the less studied polymorphs and there is a lack of information about its structural, electronic and magnetic transformations at extreme conditions. Here we report the precise determination of its equation of state and a deep analysis of the evolution of the polyhedral units under compression, thanks to the agreement between our experiments and ab-initio simulations. Our results indicate that this material, with remarkable magnetic properties, is stable at pressures up to 27 GPa. Above 27 GPa, a volume collapse has been observed and ascribed to a change of the local environment of the tetrahedrally coordinated iron towards an octahedral coordination, finding evidence for a different iron oxide polymorph., Iron oxides exist in a variety of polymorphs at different pressure and temperature conditions, displaying important magnetic properties, and are major constituents of the Earth’s interior. Extreme pressures and temperatures are known to drastically affect the chemistry of iron oxides, resulting in numerous compounds forming homologous series nFeOmFe2O3 and the appearance of FeO2. Here, based on the results of in situ single-crystal x-ray diffraction, Mössbauer spectroscopy, x-ray absorption spectroscopy, and density-functional theory+dynamical mean-field theory calculations, we demonstrate that iron in high-pressure cubic FeO2 and isostructural FeO2H0.5 is ferric (Fe3+), and oxygen has a formal valence less than 2. Reduction of oxygen valence from 2, common for oxides, down to 1.5 can be explained by a formation of a localized hole at oxygen sites. © 2021 American Physical Society. The structure and properties of metal-hydrides at extreme conditions is key to the understanding of hydrogen-storage technologies, high-temperature superconductivity, and the dynamics of planetary cores. Here we investigate the phase relations and magnetic properties of iron hydrides, including two novel FeHx compounds, up to 63 GPa and 1800 K by Synchrotron Mössbauer Source spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. We observe the formation of a novel monoclinic iron hydride phase Fe2H∼3 at 63 GPa and 1000 K, which breaks down to a stoichiometric hexagonal closed packed FeH phase upon decompression below 52 GPa at 300 K. The long-range magnetic order in the two newly-synthetized phases persists to higher pressures compared to the well-known double hexagonal closed packed and face-centered cubic phases of FeH. The formation of magnetic Fe-H phases with high hydrogen concentration may influence the magnetic behavior of planetary metallic cores.

When the sample at 5 GPa was irradiated by a pulse train separated by 443 ns, the estimated sample temperature at the delay time was above 1400 K, confirmed by in situ transformation of $α$- to $γ$-iron. Ultimately, the Fe and N$_2$ reacted uniformly throughout the beam path to form Fe$_3$N$_{1.33}$, as deduced from its established equation of state (EOS). Review of scientific instruments 92(1), 013101 (2021). doi:10.1063/5.0022886, We introduce a setup to measure high-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering at the High Energy Density scientific instrument at the European X-Ray Free-Electron Laser (XFEL). The setup uses the Si (533) reflection in a channel-cut monochromator and three spherical diced analyzer crystals in near-backscattering geometry to reach a high spectral resolution. An energy resolution of 44 meV is demonstrated for the experimental setup, close to the theoretically achievable minimum resolution. The analyzer crystals and detector are mounted on a curved-rail system, allowing quick and reliable changes in scattering angle without breaking vacuum. The entire setup is designed for operation at 10 Hz, the same repetition rate as the high-power lasers available at the instrument and the fundamental repetition rate of the European XFEL. The ePix detector family provides multiple variants of hybrid pixel detectors to support a wide range of applications at free electron laser facilities. We present the results of a systematic study of the influence of radiation induced damage on the performance and lifetime of an ePix100a detector module using a direct attenuated beam of the EuXFEL at 9 keV photon energy and an average power of 10 $\mu$W. An area of 20 x 20 pixels was irradiated with an average photon flux of approx. 7 x $10^{9}$ photons/s to a dose of approximately 760$\pm$65 kGy at the location of the Si/SiO$_2$ interfaces in the sensor. A dose dependent increase in both offset and noise of the ePix100a detector have been observed originating from an increase of the sensor leakage current. Moreover, we observed an effect directly after irradiation resulting in the saturation of individual pixels by their dark current. Changes in gain are evaluated one and half hours post irradiation and suggest damage to occur also on the ASIC level. Based on the obtained results, thresholds for beam parameters are deduced and the detector lifetime is estimated with respect to the requirements to the data quality in order to satisfy the scientific standards defined by the experiments. We conclude the detector can withstand a beam with an energy up to 1 $\mu$J at a photon energy of 9 keV impacting on an area of 1 mm$^2$. The detector can be used without significant degradation of its performance for several years if the incident photon beam intensities do not exceed the detector's dynamic range by at least three orders of magnitude. The Fe–Mg exchange coefficient between olivine (ol) and melt (m), defined as$${\text{Kd}}_{{{\text{Fe}}^{T} {-} {\text{Mg}}}}$$KdFeT-Mg = (Feol/Fem)·(Mgm/Mgol), with all FeTexpressed as Fe2+, is one of the most widely used parameters in petrology. We explore the effect of redox conditions on$${\text{Kd}}_{{{\text{Fe}}^{T} {-} {\text{Mg}}}}$$KdFeT-Mgusing experimental, olivine-saturated basaltic glasses with variable H2O (≤ 7 wt%) over a wide range offO2(iron-wüstite buffer to air), pressure (≤ 1.7 GPa), temperature (1025–1425 °C) and melt composition. The ratio of Fe3+to total Fe (Fe3+/∑Fe), as determined by Fe K-edge µXANES and/or Synchrotron Mössbauer Source (SMS) spectroscopy, lies in the range 0–0.84. Measured Fe3+/∑Fe is consistent (± 0.05) with published algorithms and appears insensitive to dissolved H2O. Combining our new data with published experimental data having measured glass Fe3+/∑Fe, we show that for Fo65–98olivine in equilibrium with basaltic and basaltic andesite melts,$${\text{Kd}}_{{{\text{Fe}}^{T} {-} {\text{Mg}}}}$$KdFeT-Mgdecreases linearly with Fe3+/∑Fe with a slope and intercept of 0.3135 ± 0.0011. After accounting for non-ideal mixing of forsterite and fayalite in olivine, using a symmetrical regular solution model, the slope and intercept become 0.3642 ± 0.0011. This is the value at Fo50olivine; at higher and lower Fo the value will be reduced by an amount related to olivine non-ideality. Our approach provides a straightforward means to determine Fe3+/∑Fe in olivine-bearing experimental melts, from whichfO2can be calculated. In contrast to$${\text{Kd}}_{{{\text{Fe}}^{T} {-} {\text{Mg}}}}$$KdFeT-Mg, the Mn–Mg exchange coefficient,$${\text{Kd}}_{{{\text{Mn}} {-} {\text{Mg}}}}$$KdMn-Mg, is relatively constant over a wide range of P–T–fO2conditions. We present an expression for$${\text{Kd}}_{{{\text{Mn}} {-} {\text{Mg}}}}$$KdMn-Mgthat incorporates the effects of temperature and olivine composition using the lattice strain model. By applying our experimentally-calibrated expressions for$${\text{Kd}}_{{{\text{Fe}}^{T} {-} {\text{Mg}}}}$$KdFeT-Mgand$${\text{Kd}}_{{{\text{Mn}} {-} {\text{Mg}}}}$$KdMn-Mgto olivine-hosted melt inclusions analysed by electron microprobe it is possible to correct simultaneously for post-entrapment crystallisation (or dissolution) and calculate melt Fe3+/∑Fe to a precision of ≤ 0.04.

A portable IR fiber laser-heating system, optimized for X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) and nuclear inelastic scattering (NIS) spectroscopy with signal collection through the radial opening of diamond anvil cells near 90°with respect to the incident X-ray beam, is presented. The system offers double-sided on-axis heating by a single laser source and zero attenuation of incoming X-rays other than by the high-pressure environment. A description of the system, which has been tested for pressures above 100 GPa and temperatures up to 3000 K, is given. The XES spectra of laser-heated Mg0.67Fe0.33O demonstrate the potential to map the iron spin state in the pressure–temperature range of the Earth's lower mantle, and the NIS spectra of laser-heated FeSi give access to the sound velocity of this candidate of a phase inside the Earth's core. Carbonates play an important role in the transport and storage of carbon in the Earth’s mantle. However, the abundance of carbon and carbonates in subduction zones is still an unknown quantity. To determine the most abundant accessory phases and how they influence the dynamical processes that operate within the Earth, investigations on the vibrational, elastic, and thermodynamic properties of these phases are crucial for interpreting seismological observations. Recently, the nuclear inelastic scattering (NIS) method has proved to be a useful tool to access information on the lattice dynamics, as well as to determine Debye sound velocities of Fe-bearing materials. Here we derive the acoustic velocities from two carbonate compositions in the FeCO3-MgCO3 binary system up to ~70 GPa using the NIS method. We conclude that more Mg-rich samples, in this case (Fe0.26Mg0.74)CO3, have ~19% higher sound velocities than the pure end-member Fe composition. In addition, we observed a significant velocity increase after the Fe2+ spin transition was complete. After laser heating of FeCO3 at lower mantle conditions, we observed a dramatic velocity drop, which is probably associated with thermal decomposition to another phase. Parallel to our NIS experiments, we conducted a single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) study to derive the equation of states of FeCO3 and (Fe0.26Mg0.74)CO3. The combined information from NIS (i.e., Debye velocities) and SCXRD (i.e., densities and bulk moduli) experiments enabled us to derive the primary and shear wave velocities of our samples. Our results are consistent with results obtained by other methods in previous studies, including Brillouin spectroscopy, inelastic X-ray scattering, and DFT calculations, supporting NIS as a reliable alternative method for studying the elastic properties of Fe-bearing systems at high pressures and temperatures. Finally, we discuss the seismic detectability of carbonates. We determine that nearly 22 wt% CO2 must be present in the subduction slab to detect a 1% shear wave velocity decrease compared to non-carbonated lithologies at the transition zone to lower mantle boundary depths.

The spectrometer is designed to be operated primarily between 5 and 15 keV to complement the operating photon energy range of the HED instrument. Four Highly Annealed Pyrolitic Graphite (HAPG) crystals are characterised with thicknesses of 40 μm or 100 μm and radius-of-curvature 50 mm or 80 mm, in conjunction with either an ePix100 or Jungfrau detector. The achieved resolution with the 50 mm crystals, operated between 6.5 and 9 keV, matches that reported previously: ~8 eV for a thickness of 40 μm, whereas, with an 80 mm crystal of thickness 40 μm, the resolution exceeds that expected. Namely, a resolution of 2 eV is demonstrated between 5–6 keV implying a resolving power of 2800. Therefore, we posit that flatter HAPG crystals, with their high reflectivity and improved resolving power, are a powerful tool for hard x-ray scattering and emission experiments allowing unprecedented measurements of collective scattering in a single shot., Published by Inst. of Physics, London

Magnesiobeltrandoite-2 N 3 S , ideally Mg 6 Al 20 Fe 2 3 + O 38 ( OH ) 2 , is a new member of the hogbomite supergroup of minerals. It occurs in magnesian chloritites of a metamorphosed layered mafic complex in the Etirol-Levaz continental slice, middle Valtournenche, Aosta Valley, Italy. Magnesiobeltrandoite-2 N 3 S grows in a fine-grained chlorite matrix associated as inclusions to relict pre-Alpine hercynite spinels and dolomite in cm- to dm-long darker boudins, which are cut by corundum + clinochlore ± dolomite veins. It occurs as subhedral to euhedral black crystals (~50–400 μm), dark reddish-brown in thin section. It shows dark brown streak and vitreous lustre. It is brittle, with no cleavage observed and uneven fracture. Mohs hardness ≈ 6–6½. D calc = 3.93 g · cm −3 . It shows no fluorescence under UV radiation and no cathodoluminescence. The mineral is optically uniaxial (−) with an estimated mean refractive index of ca. 1.80. Pleochroism is weak with e = deep reddish brown (along c axis) and ω = reddish brown (⊥ c ). Absorption is E > O. The Raman spectrum shows a weak and strongly polarized broad OH-characteristic absorption centred at 3364 cm −1 . Electron microprobe analysis combined with Synchrotron Mӧssbauer source spectrometry yielded the following empirical formula based on 40 anions per formula unit (pfu) [ Al 18.36 Mg 3.96 Fe 2.52 2 + Fe 2.08 3 + Ti 0.56 Cr 0.40 Zn 0.06 V 0.03 3 + Mn 0.02 ] ∑ 28 O 38 ( OH ) 2 . The ideal formula is Mg 6 Al 20 Fe 2 3 + O 38 ( OH ) 2 . The eight strongest lines in the X-ray powder diffraction pattern are [ d obs /A ( I ) ( hkl )]: 2.858 (42) (110), 2.735 (51) (107), 2.484 (46) (018), 2.427 (100) (115), 1.568 (29) (128), 1.514 (30) (0212), 1.438 (42) (2013), and 1.429 (72) (220). The crystal structure of magnesiobeltrandoite-2 N 3 S [ P 3 ¯ m 1 , a = 5.7226(3), c = 23.0231(9) A, V = 652.95(5) A 3 ] was refined from X-ray single-crystal data to R 1 =0.022; it is isostructural with magnesiohӧgbomite-2 N 3 S .

International audience; We present a proof-of-principle study demonstrating x-ray Raman Spectroscopy (XRS) from carbon samples at ambient conditions in conjunction with other common diagnostics to study warm dense matter, performed at the high energy density scientific instrument of the European x-ray Free Electron Laser (European XFEL). We obtain sufficient spectral resolution to identify the local structure and chemical bonding of diamond and graphite samples, using highly annealed pyrolytic graphite spectrometers. Due to the high crystal reflectivity and XFEL brightness, we obtain signal strengths that will enable accurate XRS measurements in upcoming pump-probe experiments with a high repetition-rate, where the samples will be pumped with high-power lasers. Molecular dynamics simulations based on density functional theory together with XRS simulations demonstrate the potential of this technique and show predictions for high-energy-density conditions. Our setup allows simultaneous implementation of several different diagnostic methods to reduce ambiguities in the analysis of the experimental results, which, for warm dense matter, often relies on simplifying model assumptions. The promising capabilities demonstrated here provide unprecedented insights into chemical and structural dynamics in warm dense matter states of light elements, including conditions similar to the interiors of planets, low-mass stars, and other celestial bodies.

We report the crystal structure of dolomite-IV, a high-pressure polymorph of Fe-dolomite stabilized at 115 GPa and 2500 K. It is orthorhombic, space group Pnma , a = 10.091(3), b = 8.090(7), c = 4.533(3) A, V = 370.1(4) A 3 at 115.2 GPa and ambient temperature. The structure is based on the presence of threefold C 3 O 9 carbonate rings, with carbon in tetrahedral coordination. The starting Fe-dolomite single crystal during compression up to 115 GPa transforms into dolomite-II (at 17 GPa) and dolomite-IIIb (at 36 GPa). The dolomite-IIIb, observed in this study, is rhombohedral, space group R 3, a = 11.956(3), c = 13.626(5) A, V = 1686.9(5) A 3 at 39.4 GPa. It is different from a previously determined dolomite-III structure, but topologically similar. The density increase from dolomite-IIIb to dolomite IV is ca. 3%. The structure of dolomite-IV has not been predicted, but it presents similarities with the structural models proposed for the high-pressure polymorphs of magnesite, MgCO 3 . A ring-carbonate structure match with spectroscopic analysis of high-pressure forms of magnesite-siderite reported in the literature, and, therefore, is a likely candidate structure for a carbonate at the bottom of the Earth’s mantle, at least for magnesitic and dolomitic compositions.

Magnesite (MgCO3), calcite (CaCO3), dolomite [(Ca, Mg)CO3], and siderite (FeCO3) are among the best-studied carbonate minerals at high pressures and temperatures. Although they all exhibit the calcite-type structure ( $${\text{R}}\bar{3}{\text{c}}$$ ) at ambient conditions, they display very different behavior at mantle pressures. To broaden the knowledge of the high-pressure crystal chemistry of carbonates, we studied spherocobaltite (CoCO3), which contains Co2+ with cation radius in between those of Ca2+ and Mg2+ in calcite and magnesite, respectively. We synthesized single crystals of pure spherocobaltite and studied them using Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction in diamond anvil cells at pressures to over 55 GPa. Based on single crystal diffraction data, we found that the bulk modulus of spherocobaltite is 128 (2) GPa and K′ = 4.28 (17). CoCO3 is stable in the calcite-type structure up to at least 56 GPa and 1200 K. At 57 GPa and after laser heating above 2000 K, CoCO3 partially decomposes and forms CoO. In comparison to previously studied carbonates, our results suggest that at lower mantle conditions carbonates can be stable in the calcite-type structure if the radius of the incorporated cation(s) is equal or smaller than that of Co2+ (i.e., 0.745 A).

We present a new diamond anvil cell design, hereafter called mBX110, that combines both the advantages of a membrane and screws to generate high pressure. It enables studies at large-scale facilities for many synchrotron X-ray techniques and has the possibility to remotely control the pressure with the membrane as well as the use of the screws in the laboratory. It is fully compatible with various gas-loading systems as well as high/low temperature environments in the lab or at large scale facilities. The mBX110 possesses an opening angle of 85° suitable for single-crystal diffraction or Brillouin spectroscopy and a large side opening of 110° which can be used for X-ray inelastic techniques, such as X-ray Raman scattering spectroscopy, but also for X-ray emission, X-ray fluorescence, or X-ray absorption. An even larger opening of 150° can be manufactured enabling X-ray imaging tomography. We report data obtained with the mBX110 on different beamlines with single-crystal diffraction of stishovite up to 55 GPa, X-ray powder diffraction of rutile-GeO2 and tungsten to 25 GPa and 280 GPa, respectively, X-Ray Raman spectra of the Si L-edge in silica to 95 GPa, and Fe Kβ X-ray emission spectra on a basalt glass to 17 GPa.

We studied FeCO3 using Fe K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy at pressures up to 54 GPa and temperatures above 2000 K. First-principles calculations of Fe at the K-edge in FeCO3 were performed to support the interpretation of the XANES spectra. The variation of iron absorption edge features with pressure and temperature in FeCO3 matches well with recently reported observations on FeCO3 at extreme conditions, and provides new insight into the stability of Fe-carbonates in Earth's mantle. Here we show that at conditions of the mid-lower mantle, ~50 GPa and ~2200 K, FeCO3 melts and partially decomposes to high-pressure Fe3O4. Carbon (diamond) and oxygen are also inferred products of the reaction. We constrained the thermodynamic phase boundary between crystalline FeCO3 and melt to be at 51(1) GPa and ~1850 K. We observe that at 54(1) GPa, temperature-induced spin crossover of Fe2+ takes place from low to high spin such that at 1735(100) K, all iron in FeCO3 is in the high-spin state. A comparison between experiment and theory provides a more detailed understanding of FeCO3 decomposition observed in X-ray absorption spectra and helps to explain spectral changes due to pressure-induced spin crossover in FeCO3 at ambient temperature.

Spin-crossover nanomaterials have been actively studied in the past decade for their potential technological applications in sensing, actuating, and information processing devices. Unfortunately, an increasing number of the metallic centers become inactive at reduced sizes, presumably due to surface effects, limiting their switching ability and thus the scope of applications. Here we report on the investigation of “frozen” metallic centers in nanoparticles (2–80 nm size) of the spin-crossover compound Fe(pyrazine)[Ni(CN)4]. Magnetic measurements reveal both high-spin and low-spin residual fractions at atmospheric pressure. A pressure-induced transition of the high-spin residue is observed at around 1.5 GPa by synchrotron Mössbauer spectroscopy. We show that it is equivalent to a downshift of the transition temperature by ca. 400 K due to the size reduction. Unexpectedly, small-angle neutron scattering experiments demonstrate that these high-spin residual centers are not confined to the surface, which contradicts general theoretical considerations.

The magnetite Fe3O4, being anciently known magnetic material to human kind and remaining in leading positions for development of advanced technologies presently, demonstrates a number of puzzling physical phenomena, being at focus of extensive research for more than century. Recently the pressure-induced anomalous behavior of physical properties of magnetite in vicinity of the structural phase transition, occurring at P ~ 25–30 GPa, has attracted particular attention, and its nature remains unclear. Here we study the magnetic and electronic properties of magnetite across high pressure anomaly and in the pressure-induced phase by means of 57Fe synchrotron Moessbauer spectroscopy and neutron diffraction. The hyperfine interaction parameters behavior was systematically analysed over pressure 0–40 GPa and temperature 10–290 K ranges. In the high pressure phase the ferrimagnetic order formation below TNP ~ 420 K was observed and spin arrangement symmetry was deduced. The structural, magnetic and electronic phase diagram of magnetite in the discussed pressure range is established.

Mössbauer spectroscopy (MS) measurements were conducted on ammonium iron formate, [NH4][Fe(HCOO)3] (AFeF), and dimethylammonium iron formate, [(CH3)2NH2][Fe(HCOO)3] (DMAFeF), under non-ambient conditions. The electric ordering of the NH4+ and DMA cations is correlated with changes in the local iron environment, which could have implications for the magnetoelectric coupling. In particular, MS was collected upon cooling to 5 K, upon compression up to 10 GPa, and upon both cooling and compression. In the case of AFeF, the ferroelectric ordering upon cooling showed no change in the hyperfine parameters of the iron site, suggesting that no multiferroic coupling would be expected in the magnetic state. Upon compression, two distinct iron sites are observed that could arise from the symmetry-lowering transitions, yielding two symmetry-independent Fe sites. For DMAFeF, the electric ordering of the DMA cation observed upon cooling and upon compression had an impact on the local iron coordination environments. This observation is in agreement with the multiferroic properties observed for this compound. The low-temperature crystal structure of DMAFeF was measured in order to compare with the MS measurements and revealed a static disorder of the DMA cations in the ferroelectric phase, giving rise to at least two distinct iron sites in the Mössbauer spectrum. Upon further cooling below 15 K, the magnetic order of DMAFeF displayed a complex Mössbauer spectrum with at least three iron sites, which could be linked to the number of hydrogen bonds each iron center experiences. The effect of pressure on the magnetic exchanges at low temperature was also studied and revealed an enhancement for DMAFeF at 1.6 GPa, as indicated by the increased internal magnetic fields.

X-ray emission and X-ray Raman scattering spectroscopy are powerful tools to investigate the local electronic and atomic structure of high and low Z elements in situ. Notably, these methods can be applied for in situ spectroscopy at high pressure and high temperature using resistively or laser-heated diamond anvil cells in order to achieve thermodynamic conditions which appear in the Earth's interior. We present a setup for combined X-ray emission and X-ray Raman scattering studies at beamline P01 of PETRA III using a portable wavelength-dispersive von Hamos spectrometer together with the permanently installed multiple-analyzer Johann-type spectrometer. The capabilities of this setup are exemplified by investigating the iron spin crossover of siderite FeCO 3 up to 49.3 GPa by measuring the Fe M 2,3 -edge and the Fe Kβ 1,3 emission line simultaneously. With this setup, the Fe valence-to-core emission can be detected together with the Kβ 1,3 emission line providing complementary information on the sample's electronic structure. By implementing a laser-heating device, we demonstrate the strength of using a von Hamos type spectrometer for spin state mapping at extreme conditions. Finally, we give different examples of low Z elements' absorption edges relevant for application in geoscience that are accessible with the Johann-type XRS spectrometer. With this setup new insights into the spin transition and compression mechanisms of Earth's mantle materials can be obtained of importance for comprehension of the macroscopic physical and chemical properties of the Earth's interior.

It has been previously proven that during continuous wave (CW) laser heating of a sample, carbon of the diamond anvils is mobilized, and its diffusion into the sample can lead to undesirable chemical reactions, which, if not detected, may cause misinterpretations of the results of the experiment. Minimizing the heating time with the use of a pulsed laser (PL) is thought to reduce the risk of possible carbon contamination of the sample; however, this has not been proven experimentally. Here, we report the results of our comparative study of the effect of pulsed and continuous wave (CW) laser heating on the mobilization of carbon and its chemical interaction with iron in a diamond anvil cell. Using X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy, Synchrotron Mössbauer Source spectroscopy, and Synchrotron X-ray diffraction, we examined iron samples that were laser heated in DACs in various pressure transmitting media (neon, argon, and potassium chloride). According to our results, the use of the PL heating does not prevent the sample from carbon contamination. A reaction between carbon and iron happens within a few seconds even at moderate temperatures. In this paper we present recent achievements in the field of investigation of the local, electronic and magnetic structure of the matter under extreme conditions of pressure and temperature. These results were obtained thanks to the coupling of a compact laser heating system to the energy-dispersive XAS technique available on the ID24 beamline at the ESRF synchrotron. The examples chosen concern the melting and the liquid structure of 3d metals and alloys under high pressures (HPs) and the observation of temperature-induced spin crossover in FeCO3 at HP.

The Earth’s crust–mantle boundary, the Mohorovicic discontinuity, has been traditionally considered to be the interface between the magnetic crust and the non-magnetic mantle1. However, this assumption has been questioned by geophysical observations2,3 and by the identification of magnetic remanence in mantle xenoliths4, which suggest mantle magnetic sources. Owing to their high critical temperatures, iron oxides are the only potential sources of magnetic anomalies at mantle depths5. Haematite (α-Fe2O3) is the dominant iron oxide in subducted lithologies at depths of 300 to 600 kilometres, delineated by the thermal decomposition of magnetite and the crystallization of a high-pressure magnetite phase deeper than about 600 kilometres6. The lack of data on the magnetic properties of haematite at relevant pressure–temperature conditions, however, hinders the identification of magnetic boundaries within the mantle and their contribution to observed magnetic anomalies. Here we apply synchrotron Mossbauer source spectroscopy in laser-heated diamond anvil cells to investigate the magnetic transitions and critical temperatures in Fe2O3 polymorphs7 at pressures and temperatures of up to 90 gigapascals and 1,300 kelvin, respectively. Our results show that haematite remains magnetic at the depth of the transition zone in the Earth’s mantle in cold or very cold subduction geotherms, forming a frame of deep magnetized rocks in the West Pacific region. The deep magnetic sources spatially correlate with preferred paths of the Earth’s virtual geomagnetic poles during reversals8 that might not reflect the geometry of the transitional field. Rather, the paths might be an artefact caused by magnetized haematite-bearing rocks in cold subducting slabs at mid-transition zone depths. Such deep sources should be taken into account when carrying out inversions of the Earth’s geomagnetic data9, and especially in studies of planetary bodies that no longer have a dynamo10, such as Mars. Synchrotron Mossbauer source spectroscopy is used to reveal that haematite remains magnetic in cold subducting slabs at the depth of the transition zone in the Earth’s mantle, with implications for the locations of magnetic poles during inversions of the Earth’s magnetic field.

High-pressure experimental data on sound velocities of garnets are used for interpretation of seismological data related to the Earth’s upper mantle and the mantle transition zone. We have carried out a Nuclear Inelastic Scattering study of iron-silicate garnet with skiagite (77 mol%)–iron–majorite composition in a diamond anvil cell up to 56 GPa at room temperature. The determined sound velocities are considerably lower than sound velocities of a number of silicate garnet end-members, such as grossular, pyrope, Mg–majorite, andradite, and almandine. The obtained sound velocities have the following pressure dependencies: V p [km/s] = 7.43(9) + 0.039(4) × P [GPa] and V s [km/s] = 3.56(12) + 0.012(6) × P [GPa]. We estimated sound velocities of pure skiagite and khoharite, and conclude that the presence of the iron–majorite component in skiagite strongly decreases V s . We analysed the influence of Fe3+ on sound velocities of garnet solid solution relevant to the mantle transition zone and consider that it may reduce sound velocities up to 1% relative to compositions with only Fe2+ in the cubic site.

The recently-discovered iron pentoxide (Fe$_4$O$_5$) comprising mixed-valent iron cations at octahedral chains, demonstrates another unusual charge-ordering transition at 150 K involving competing formation of iron trimerons and dimerons. Here, we experimentally show that applied pressure can tune the charge-ordering pattern in Fe$_4$O$_5$ and strongly affect the ordering temperature. We report two charge-ordered phases, the first of which may comprise both dimeron and trimeron units, whereas, the second exhibits an overall dimerization involving both the octahedral and trigonal-prismatic chains of iron in the crystal structure. We link the dramatic change in the charge-ordering pattern in the second phase to redistribution of electrons between the octahedral and prismatic iron chains, and propose that the average oxidation state of the iron cations can pre-determine a charge-ordering pattern., Published by Nature Publishing Group UK, [London]

Nature geoscience 11(2), 144 - 147 (2018). doi:10.1038/s41561-017-0055-7, The oxidation state of iron in Earth’s mantle is well known to depths of approximately 200 km, but has not been characterized in samples from the lowermost upper mantle (200–410 km depth) or the transition zone (410–660 km depth). Natural samples from the deep (>200 km) mantle are extremely rare, and are usually only found as inclusions in diamonds. Here we use synchrotron Mössbauer source spectroscopy complemented by single-crystal X-ray diffraction to measure the oxidation state of Fe in inclusions of ultra-high pressure majoritic garnet in diamond. The garnets show a pronounced increase in oxidation state with depth, with Fe$^{3+}$/(Fe$^{3+}$+ Fe$^{2+}$) increasing from 0.08 at approximately 240 km depth to 0.30 at approximately 500 km depth. The latter majorites, which come from pyroxenitic bulk compositions, are twice as rich in Fe$^{3+}$ as the most oxidized garnets from the shallow mantle. Corresponding oxygen fugacities are above the upper stability limit of Fe metal. This implies that the increase in oxidation state is unconnected to disproportionation of Fe$^{2+}$ to Fe$^{3+}$ plus Fe$^0$. Instead, the Fe$^{3+}$ increase with depth is consistent with the hypothesis that carbonated fluids or melts are the oxidizing agents responsible for the high Fe$^{3+}$ contents of the inclusions., Published by Nature Publ. The high pressure structural phase diagram of EuTiO3 is revisited by means of single crystal x-ray diffraction at pressures below 30GPa. We report a transition at about 3GPa with a surprisingly small lattice distortion. At 23GPa we have detected a yet unknown transition into a new orthorhombic phase (space group Ibam). Combining our observations on structures obtained on single crystals and polycrystalline samples with complementary methods, such as electrical resistivity and nuclear forward scattering of synchrotron radiation measured on polycrystalline samples, we address issues relevant to chemistry and disorder.

Before the Archean to Proterozoic Transition (APT) the tectonic regime was dominated by microplates floating on a low viscosity mantle. Such a regime restricted chemical exchange between the shallow and deeper mantle reservoirs. After the APT, a more global convection regime led to deep subduction of slabs. We propose that the improved vertical mixing of the mantle favoured the release to the Earth's surface of an oxygen excess initially trapped in the deep mantle. This excess built up when the primordial lower mantle was left with a high Fe3+/(Fe2++Fe3+) ratio (#Fe3+), after metallic iron segregated down into the core. Our synchrotron-based in situ experiments suggest a primordial Fe3+excess of ∼20 % for the mantle iron. By comparison with the #Fe3+ of the present mantle, this Fe3+excess would correspond to 500-1000 times the O2 content in the Earth's atmosphere. The tectonic transition greatly facilitated the ascent of oxidised lower mantle material towards the Earth's surface, inducing a continuous arrival of O2 at the Earth's surface and into the atmosphere.

Deformation-assisted segregation of metallic and sulphidic liquid from a solid peridotitic matrix is a process that may contribute to the early differentiation of small planetesimals into a metallic core and a silicate mantle. Here we present results of an experimental study using a simplified system consisting of a polycrystalline Fo90-olivine matrix containing a small percentage of iron sulphide and a synthetic primitive MORB melt, in order to investigate whether the silicate melt enhances the interconnection and segregation of FeS liquid under deformation conditions at varying strain rates. The experiments have been performed at 2 GPa, 1450 °C and strain rates between 1 × 10 − 3 s − 1 to 1 × 10 − 5 s − 1 . Our results show that the presence of silicate melt actually hinders the migration and segregation of sulphide liquid by reducing its interconnectivity. At low to moderate strain rates the sulphide liquid pockets preserved a roundish shape, showing the liquid behavior is governed mainly by surface tension rather than by differential stress. Even at the highest strain rates, insignificant FeS segregation and interconnection were observed. On the other hand the basaltic melt was very mobile during deformation, accommodating part of the strain, which led to its segregation from the matrix at high bulk strains leaving the sulphide liquid stranded in the olivine matrix. Hence, we conclude that deformation-induced percolation of sulphide liquid does not contribute to the formation of planetary cores after the silicate solidus is overstepped. A possible early deformation enhanced core–mantle differentiation after overstepping the Fe–S solidus is not possible between the initial formation of silicate melt and the formation of a widespread magma ocean.

We present a high-pressure study of $\mathrm{M}{\mathrm{g}}_{1--x}\mathrm{F}{\mathrm{e}}_{x}\mathrm{O}$ (ferropericlase, Fp) single crystals $0.04(1)\ensuremath{\le}x\ensuremath{\le}0.33(1)$ with a focus on ferrous iron spin-state crossover and the material behavior preceding it. Using Vegard's law and highly accurate high-pressure single-crystal experimental data, we extract the lattice parameter ${a}_{\mathrm{FeO}}^{\mathrm{HS}}$ of the ``FeO high spin lattice contribution'' in the MgO-FeO solid solution. We find that ferropericlases with a wide range of compositions share the same critical parameter ${a}_{C}$ (defined as the minimum ${a}_{\mathrm{FeO}}^{\mathrm{HS}}$ after which spin crossover starts). Furthermore, we discuss the effect of composition on spin crossover in ferrous iron in ferropericlase in the limits of low and moderate concentrations of $\mathrm{F}{\mathrm{e}}^{2+}$.
