Abstract

We introduce the Automatic Learning for the Rapid Classification of Events (ALeRCE) broker, an astronomical alert broker designed to provide a rapid and self--consistent classification of large etendue telescope alert streams, such as that provided by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) and, in the future, the Vera C. Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). ALeRCE is a Chilean--led broker run by an interdisciplinary team of astronomers and engineers, working to become intermediaries between survey and follow--up facilities. ALeRCE uses a pipeline which includes the real--time ingestion, aggregation, cross--matching, machine learning (ML) classification, and visualization of the ZTF alert stream. We use two classifiers: a stamp--based classifier, designed for rapid classification, and a light--curve--based classifier, which uses the multi--band flux evolution to achieve a more refined classification. We describe in detail our pipeline, data products, tools and services, which are made public for the community (see \url{https://alerce.science}). Since we began operating our real--time ML classification of the ZTF alert stream in early 2019, we have grown a large community of active users around the globe. We describe our results to date, including the real--time processing of $9.7\times10^7$ alerts, the stamp classification of $1.9\times10^7$ objects, the light curve classification of $8.5\times10^5$ objects, the report of 3088 supernova candidates, and different experiments using LSST-like alert streams. Finally, we discuss the challenges ahead to go from a single-stream of alerts such as ZTF to a multi--stream ecosystem dominated by LSST., Comment: Submitted to AAS on Jun 29th. Abstract

We present the first version of the ALeRCE (Automatic Learning for the Rapid Classification of Events) broker light curve classifier. ALeRCE is currently processing the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) alert stream, in preparation for the Vera C. Rubin Observatory. The ALeRCE light curve classifier uses variability features computed from the ZTF alert stream, and colors obtained from AllWISE and ZTF photometry. We apply a Balanced Random Forest algorithm with a two-level scheme, where the top level classifies each source as periodic, stochastic, or transient, and the bottom level further resolves each of these hierarchical classes, amongst 15 total classes. This classifier corresponds to the first attempt to classify multiple classes of stochastic variables (including core- and host-dominated active galactic nuclei, blazars, young stellar objects, and cataclysmic variables) in addition to different classes of periodic and transient sources, using real data. We created a labeled set using various public catalogs (such as the Catalina Surveys and {\em Gaia} DR2 variable stars catalogs, and the Million Quasars catalog), and we classify all objects with $\geq6$ $g$-band or $\geq6$ $r$-band detections in ZTF (868,371 sources as of 2020/06/09), providing updated classifications for sources with new alerts every day. For the top level we obtain macro-averaged precision and recall scores of 0.96 and 0.99, respectively, and for the bottom level we obtain macro-averaged precision and recall scores of 0.57 and 0.76, respectively. 30. A modification of minimal analytic QCD at low energies

Abstract

We present an approach which allows for modifications of the (minimal) analytic QCD model of Shirkov, Solovtsov et al. The discontinuity function of the (minimal) analytic QCD coupling parameter is changed at the low time-like momenta by a simple ansatz motivated by the vector meson dominance for the vector channel of the e+e- hadronic decay ratio R_v(s). In this way, the additional low energy parameters introduced in the coupling parameter make it possible to obtain the correct value of the semihadronic tau decay ratio without having to introduce the unusually heavy quark masses of u, d and s quarks, in contrast to the minimal analytic QCD. Some numerical results are presented in the leading skeleton approximation for a simple version of such a model. In the frame of the scalar theory $g \phi ^{4}$, we explore the occurrence of thermal renormalons, i. e. temperature dependent singularities in the Borel plane. The discussion of a particular renormalon type diagram at finite temperature, using Thermofield Dynamics, allows us to establish that these singularities actually get a temperature dependence. Abstract

The principal form of synchronized network activity in neonatal hippocampus consists of low frequency 'giant depolarizing potentials' (GDPs). Whereas contribution of both GABA and glutamate to their generation has been demonstrated, full understanding of the mechanisms underlying these synchronized activity bursts remains incomplete. A contribution of the h-current, conducted by HCN channels, to GDPs has been a topic of substantial interest. Here we focus on HCN1, the prevalent HCN channel isoform in neonatal hippocampus, and demonstrate an HCN1 spatiotemporal expression pattern in both CA3 principal cells and interneurons that correlates with the developmental profile of GDPs. Abrogation of HCN physiological function in CA3, via the selective I(h)-blocker ZD7288, disrupts GDP generation. Furthermore, ZD7288 specifically abolishes spontaneous bursting of the CA3 pyramidal cells at frequencies typical of GDPs without major influence on interneuronal firing. These findings support a pivotal role for HCN channels expressed by CA3 neurons, and particularly CA3 pyramidal cells, in GDP-related network synchronization.

Abstract

Objective To define the clinical spectrum time-course and prognosis of non-Asian patients positive for anti-MDA5 antibodies. Methods We conducted a multicentre, international, retrospective cohort study. Results 149 anti-MDA5 positive patients (median onset age 53 years, median disease duration 18 months), mainly females (100, 67%), were included. Dermatomyositis (64, 43%) and amyopathic dermatomyositis (47, 31%), were the main diagnosis; 15 patients (10%) were classified as interstitial pneumonia with autoimmune features (IPAF) and 7 (5%) as rheumatoid arthritis. The main clinical findings observed were myositis (84, 56%), interstitial lung disease (ILD) (108, 78%), skin lesions (111, 74%), and arthritis (76, 51%). The onset of these manifestations was not concomitant in 74 cases (50%). Of note, 32 (21.5%) patients were admitted to the intensive care unit for rapidly progressive-ILD, which occurred in median 2 months from lung involvement detection, in the majority of cases (28, 19%) despite previous immunosuppressive treatment. One-third of patients (47, 32% each) was ANA and anti-ENA antibodies negative and a similar percentage was anti-Ro52 kDa antibodies positive. Non-specific interstitial pneumonia (65, 60%), organising pneumonia (23, 21%), and usual interstitial pneumonia-like pattern (14, 13%) were the main ILD patterns observed. Twenty-six patients died (17%), 19 (13%) had a rapidly progressive-ILD. Conclusion The clinical spectrum of the anti-MDA5 antibodies-related disease is heterogeneous. Rapidly-progressive ILD deeply impacts the prognosis also in non-Asian patients, occurring early during the disease course. Anti-MDA5 antibody positivity should be considered even when baseline autoimmune screening is negative, anti-Ro52 kDa antibodies are positive, and radiology findings show a NSIP pattern.
