Abstract

Background Regenerative Medicine (RM) is a branch of medicine that aims to regenerate tissues and organs to overcome the problems transplants entail (poor availability, risk of rejection and intense immunosuppression). To do this, RM makes use of tissue engineering (TE). This fundamental branch deals with creating biological scaffolds capable of performing the role that physiologically belongs to the extracellular matrix (ECM). In this review, we report how specific characteristics of the scaffolds (bio-compatibility, biodegradability and mechanical and conformal properties) can be obtained using 3D printing, which facilitates the emulation of physiological tissues and organs.

Taste disorders impact on nutritional status which is highly relevant for treatment efficacy and overall prognosis. Improvement of taste disorder is of particular importance for cancer patients’ outcomes, thus the TASTE trial was conducted to improve taste disorders with a taste and smell training.Methods: In this trial, patients undergoing chemotherapy were screened for taste disorders. Subsequently, patients were allocated based on the detection of taste disorders (≤8 taste strips points) to an intervention group with a taste and smell training at baseline and week 3–5 or were only followed up, if no taste disorder was detected (≥9 taste strips points) (non-intervention group). At baseline, all patients received a nutritional counseling. The primary endpoint was the minimal clinically relevant improvement of taste strips score by 2 taste strips points in at least 50% of the patients with taste disorders.Results: The trial included 62 patients (48 women [77%], 14 male [23%], age 54.5±11.6 years) who had gastrointestinal (n=29), breast (n=31), or lung cancer (n=2). Taste disorders were more frequent in gastrointestinal than in breast cancer patients. Out of 62 patients screened, 30 patients showed taste disorders. The primary endpoint was met with 92% (n=23 of 25) of the patients completing the intervention. In the intervention group, the patients’ taste significantly improved from baseline (median taste strips: 7.0 points) to week 12 (median taste strips: 10.0 points) (P≤0.001). Patients of the non-intervention group who completed the reassessment (n=27 of 32) experienced no change in taste perception in the 3-month follow-up (P=0.897).Conclusion: Intensified nutritional counseling with taste and smell training may improve taste perception of patients undergoing chemotherapy. Abstract

Polycarboxylate-ether (PCE) superplasticizers are a fundamental constituent of modern cementbased materials due to their impact on the rheology of the fresh mix and mechanical performance of the hardened material. The effect of PCEs on cement hydration kinetics has been known since their introduction in the early 1980s. However, detailed knowledge of the role played by PCE macromolecules on the basic mechanisms of cement hydration (dissolution, diffusion, precipitation) is still lacking. A better understanding of how such mechanisms are influenced by the addition of PCE is no doubt beneficial to the design of novel superplasticizing admixtures. Here, I report on some recent findings about the role of PCE superplasticizers on cement hydration kinetics and microstructural development. The interaction between PCE and C3S pastes was investigated by an ad-hoc kinetic model based on a combination of generalized forms of the Avrami and BNG (Boundary Nucleation and Growth) models. The model is used to fit the rate of C-S-H precipitation measured by in-situ X-ray powder diffraction combined with mass balance calculations. The results show that a switch from heterogeneous to homogeneous C-S-H nucleation occurs in the presence of PCEs and that the C-S-H growth rate decreases proportionally to the amount of PCE used. The predicted switch to homogeneous nucleation is in agreement with experimental results obtained by XRD-enhanced micro-tomography imaging, showing that, in the presence of PCE, C-S-H preferentially forms in the pore space rather than at the surface of clinker particles.

Abstract

Thermal noise in amorphous coatings is a limitation for a wide range of precision experiments such as gravitational-wave detectors (GWDs). Mirrors for GWDs are composed of multiple thin layers of dielectric materials deposited on a substrate: the stack is made of layers with a high refractive index interleaved with layers of a low refractive index. The goal is to obtain high reflectivity and low thermal noise. In this paper we report on the optical and mechanical properties of ion-beam-sputtered aluminium fluoride (AlF$_3$) thin films which have one of the lowest refractive index among the known coating materials and we discuss their application in current and future GWDs., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2111.01646

Abstract

In this paper we adopt a processing technology to develop elastomer plus nano-graphite hybrid composites with multifunctional properties. Beyond the improvements of the mechanical properties, the research findings demonstrate the synergistic effect of carbon black and graphite nanoplatelets to prepare rubber composite thermally conductive and to design a new class of shock absorbers. It was found that a critical GNPs/CB ratio was apt to reduce the strong interlayer forces among the GNPs sheets, which led to the efficiency on reinforcement in mechanical properties and improvements of the performance of the rubber composites.

Abstract

The development of silicone rubber nanocomposite with electrical conductivity activated by temperature and self-healing capabilities has been reported. Silicon rubber (SR) filled with graphite nanoplatelets (GNPs) was synthesized via a liquid mixing method. The electrical conductivity of the SR/GNPs composite showed a transition from insulating to conducting state with increasing the temperature. The SR/GNPs composite can be healed by simple thermal annealing.

Abstract

Water dispersed graphene oxide sheets were used to prepare graphene-polyethylenglycol diacrylate resin composites by photopolymerization. It was found that graphene sheets undergo excellent morphological distribution within the resin system, giving rise to transparent composites with unaltered thermal properties with respect to the neat resin, that are electrically conductive at loading ratios as low as 0.02 %wt of graphene oxide . We report a chemical free method for the reduction of graphene oxide (GO) thin films. It was observed how for GO films annealed in air the oxygen species desorb from the GO surface upon exposure to UV light and how the surface resistivity of such deoxygenated GO films decreases with increasing the exposure to the UV light. Abstract

This article reports an in-depth analysis of the ON-resistance drift ( $\Delta {R}_{ \mathrm{\scriptscriptstyle ON}}{)}$ induced by storage/release mechanisms occurring in the buffer of GaN-on-Si power devices. The role of both stress condition (bias, temperature, and stress time) and buffer’s epi-stack composition on $\Delta {R}_{ \mathrm{\scriptscriptstyle ON}}$ has been analyzed by means of back-gating current deep-level transient spectroscopy (I-DLTS). The results reveal two competing mechanisms: 1) a faster one related to acceptor defects and sensitive to the thickness of the carbon-doped GaN back-barrier (C:GaN) and superlattice (SL) layers and 2) a slower one ascribed to hole accumulation at the C:GaN/SL interface, independent of the thickness of the epi-stack. The temperature, stress bias, and stress time dependence of such mechanisms, often overlapping, have been investigated by adopting a genetic algorithm.

Abstract

Background: Lombardy was severely hit by the COVID-19 pandemic since February 2020 and the Health System underwent rapid reorganization. Outpatient clinics were stopped for non-urgent patients: it became a priority to manage hundreds of fragile neurological patients who suddenly had less reference points. In Italy, before the pandemic, Televisits were neither recognized nor priced. Methods: At the Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Neurologico C. Besta, we reorganized outpatient clinics to deliver Neuro-telemedicine services, including Televisits and Teleneurorehabilitation, since March 2020. A dedicated Working Group prepared the procedure, tested the system, and designed satisfaction questionnaires for adults and children. Results: After a pilot phase, we prepared a procedure for Telemedicine outpatient clinics which was approved by hospital directions. It included prescription, booking, consenting, privacy and data protection, secure connection with patients (Teams Microsoft 365), electronic report preparation and delivery, reporting, and accountability of the services. During the March–September 2020 period, we delivered 3167 Telemedicine services, including 1618 Televisits, to 1694 patients (972 adults, 722 children) with a wide range of chronic neurological disorders. We successfully administered different clinical assessment and scales. Satisfaction among patients and caregivers was very high. Conclusions: During the dramatic emergency, we were able to take care of more than 1600 patients by organizing Neuro-telehealth in a few weeks, lessening the impact of the pandemic on fragile patients with chronic neurological disorders; this strategy is now stably embedded in our care pathways.
