Abstract

Thermal noise in amorphous coatings is a limitation for a wide range of precision experiments such as gravitational-wave detectors (GWDs). Mirrors for GWDs are composed of multiple thin layers of dielectric materials deposited on a substrate: the stack is made of layers with a high refractive index interleaved with layers of a low refractive index. The goal is to obtain high reflectivity and low thermal noise. In this paper we report on the optical and mechanical properties of ion-beam-sputtered aluminium fluoride (AlF$_3$) thin films which have one of the lowest refractive index among the known coating materials and we discuss their application in current and future GWDs., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2111.01646

Abstract

Polymer composites based on thermoplastic elastomer and single-walled carbon nanotubes have been investigated. In particular, the effect of the incorporation of SWNTs on physical and thermal properties of the material are described. The results indicate that the SWNT act as nucleant agent, sensibly accelerating the PP crystallization in PP-EPDM blends. It is of interest to note that this effect is not linearly dependent on the SWNTs’ content, showing a saturation of the nucleant effect at high nanotube concentrations. The maximum nucleant effect was observed at low nanotubes concentration (0.5%). Similar results were obtained by dynamic mechanical analysis, with an increase of the storage modulus by incorporating of low nanotubes contents. However, a further increase in the SWNTs content dramatically decreases the storage modulus. Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy were successfully applied to demonstrate that changes in the properties of the composite films, can be explained in terms of the structural variations in the composite.En el presente estudio se han preparado nanocomposites de elastómeros termoplásticos basados en mezclas de polipropileno (PP) y terpolímeros de etileno-propileno dieno (EPDM) reforzados con nanotubos de carbono. En concreto, se ha analizado el efecto de la incorporación de los nanotubos sobre las propiedades físicas y térmicas del material. Los resultados indican que los nanotubos actúan como nucleantes, acelerando notablemente la cristalización del PP en mezclas PP-EPDM. Es importante destacar que este efecto no es lineal con el porcentaje de nanotubos en el composite, observándose una saturación a altos contenidos de nanotubos. Se ha observado que la máxima nucleación se obtiene a concentraciones de 0.5% de nanotubos en el composite. El análisis mecanodinámico muestra resultados similares, observándose un aumento del módulo de almacenamiento a bajos contenidos de nanotubos, disminuyendo considerablemente a concentraciones de nanotubos superiores al 0.5%. Por su parte, la espectroscopía Raman y microscopía electrónica de barrido permitieron determinar que estos cambios en las propiedades se deben a cambios estructurales en el composite.

Background Regenerative Medicine (RM) is a branch of medicine that aims to regenerate tissues and organs to overcome the problems transplants entail (poor availability, risk of rejection and intense immunosuppression). To do this, RM makes use of tissue engineering (TE). This fundamental branch deals with creating biological scaffolds capable of performing the role that physiologically belongs to the extracellular matrix (ECM). In this review, we report how specific characteristics of the scaffolds (bio-compatibility, biodegradability and mechanical and conformal properties) can be obtained using 3D printing, which facilitates the emulation of physiological tissues and organs.

Abstract

Background: COVID-19 pandemic is thought to have changed the epidemiology of some pediatric neurosurgical disease: among them are the intracranial complications of sinusitis and otitis (ICSO). According to some studies on a limited number of cases, both streptococci-related sinusitis and ICSO would have increased immediately after the pandemic, although the reason is not clear yet (seasonal changes versus pandemic-related effects). The goal of the present survey of the European Society for Pediatric Neurosurgery (ESPN) was to collect a large number of cases from different European countries encompassing the pre-COVID (2017–2019), COVID (2020–2021), and post-COVID period (2022–June 2023) looking for possible epidemiological and/or clinical changes. Material and methods: An English language questionnaire was sent to ESPN members about year of the event, patient’s age and gender, presence of immune-deficit or other favoring risk factors, COVID infection, signs and symptoms at onset, site of primary infection, type of intracranial complication, identified germ, type and number of surgical operations, type and duration of medical treatment, clinical and radiological outcome, duration of the follow-up. Results: Two hundred fifty-four cases were collected by 30 centers coming from 14 different European countries. There was a statistically significant difference between the post-COVID period (129 children, 86 cases/year, 50.7% of the whole series) and the COVID (40 children, 20 cases/year, 15.7%) or the pre-COVID period (85 children, 28.3 cases/year, 33.5%). Other significant differences concerned the presence of predisposing factors/concurrent diseases (higher in the pre-COVID period) and previous COVID infection (higher in the post-COVID period). Abstract

In this paper we adopt a processing technology to develop elastomer plus nano-graphite hybrid composites with multifunctional properties. Beyond the improvements of the mechanical properties, the research findings demonstrate the synergistic effect of carbon black and graphite nanoplatelets to prepare rubber composite thermally conductive and to design a new class of shock absorbers. It was found that a critical GNPs/CB ratio was apt to reduce the strong interlayer forces among the GNPs sheets, which led to the efficiency on reinforcement in mechanical properties and improvements of the performance of the rubber composites.

Abstract

The development of silicone rubber nanocomposite with electrical conductivity activated by temperature and self-healing capabilities has been reported. Silicon rubber (SR) filled with graphite nanoplatelets (GNPs) was synthesized via a liquid mixing method. The electrical conductivity of the SR/GNPs composite showed a transition from insulating to conducting state with increasing the temperature. The SR/GNPs composite can be healed by simple thermal annealing.

Abstract

Water dispersed graphene oxide sheets were used to prepare graphene-polyethylenglycol diacrylate resin composites by photopolymerization. It was found that graphene sheets undergo excellent morphological distribution within the resin system, giving rise to transparent composites with unaltered thermal properties with respect to the neat resin, that are electrically conductive at loading ratios as low as 0.02 %wt of graphene oxide . We report a chemical free method for the reduction of graphene oxide (GO) thin films. It was observed how for GO films annealed in air the oxygen species desorb from the GO surface upon exposure to UV light and how the surface resistivity of such deoxygenated GO films decreases with increasing the exposure to the UV light. Abstract

European Reference Network (ERN) CRANIO is focused on optimizing care for patients with rare or complex craniofacial anomalies, including craniosynostosis and/or rare ear, nose, and throat disorders. The main goal of ERN CRANIO is to collect uniform data on treatment outcomes for multicenter comparison. We aimed to develop a reproducible and reliable suture-specific photo score that can be used for cross-center comparison of phenotypical severity of sagittal synostosis and aesthetic outcome of treatment. We conducted a retrospective study among nonsyndromic sagittal synostosis patients aged <19 years. We included preoperative and postoperative photo sets from 6 ERN CRANIO centers. Photo sets included bird's eye, lateral, and anterior-posterior views. The sagittal synostosis photo score was discussed in the working group, and consensus was obtained on its contents. Interrater agreement was assessed with weighted Fleiss' Kappa and intraclass correlation coefficients.The photo score consisted of frontal bossing, elongated skull, biparietal narrowness, temporal hollowing, vertex line depression, occipital bullet, and overall phenotype. Each item was scored as normal, mild, moderate, or severe. Results from 36 scaphocephaly patients scored by 20 raters showed kappa values ranging from 0.38 [95% bootstrap CI: 0.31, 0.45] for biparietal narrowness to 0.56 [95% bootstrap CI: 0.47, 0.64] for frontal bossing. Agreement was highest for the sum score of individual items [intraclass correlation coefficients agreement 0.69 [95% CI: 0.57, 0.82]. This is the first large-scale multicenter study in which experts investigated a photo score to assess the severity of sagittal synostosis phenotypical characteristics. Abstract

Background: Lombardy was severely hit by the COVID-19 pandemic since February 2020 and the Health System underwent rapid reorganization. Outpatient clinics were stopped for non-urgent patients: it became a priority to manage hundreds of fragile neurological patients who suddenly had less reference points. In Italy, before the pandemic, Televisits were neither recognized nor priced. Methods: At the Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Neurologico C. Besta, we reorganized outpatient clinics to deliver Neuro-telemedicine services, including Televisits and Teleneurorehabilitation, since March 2020. A dedicated Working Group prepared the procedure, tested the system, and designed satisfaction questionnaires for adults and children. Results: After a pilot phase, we prepared a procedure for Telemedicine outpatient clinics which was approved by hospital directions. It included prescription, booking, consenting, privacy and data protection, secure connection with patients (Teams Microsoft 365), electronic report preparation and delivery, reporting, and accountability of the services. During the March–September 2020 period, we delivered 3167 Telemedicine services, including 1618 Televisits, to 1694 patients (972 adults, 722 children) with a wide range of chronic neurological disorders. We successfully administered different clinical assessment and scales. Satisfaction among patients and caregivers was very high. Conclusions: During the dramatic emergency, we were able to take care of more than 1600 patients by organizing Neuro-telehealth in a few weeks, lessening the impact of the pandemic on fragile patients with chronic neurological disorders; this strategy is now stably embedded in our care pathways. In Italy, Telehealth is at present recognized and priced and is becoming a stable pillar of the health system.

Abstract

This article reports an in-depth analysis of the ON-resistance drift ( $\Delta {R}_{ \mathrm{\scriptscriptstyle ON}}{)}$ induced by storage/release mechanisms occurring in the buffer of GaN-on-Si power devices. The role of both stress condition (bias, temperature, and stress time) and buffer’s epi-stack composition on $\Delta {R}_{ \mathrm{\scriptscriptstyle ON}}$ has been analyzed by means of back-gating current deep-level transient spectroscopy (I-DLTS). The results reveal two competing mechanisms: 1) a faster one related to acceptor defects and sensitive to the thickness of the carbon-doped GaN back-barrier (C:GaN) and superlattice (SL) layers and 2) a slower one ascribed to hole accumulation at the C:GaN/SL interface, independent of the thickness of the epi-stack. The temperature, stress bias, and stress time dependence of such mechanisms, often overlapping, have been investigated by adopting a genetic algorithm.
