Abstract

A recent Registered Replication Report (RRR) of the development of verbal rehearsal during serial recall revealed that children verbalized at younger ages than previously thought, but did not identify sources of individual differences. Here, we use mediation analysis to reanalyze data from the 934 children ranging from 5 to 10 years old from the RRR for that purpose. From ages 5 to 7, the time taken for a child to label pictures (i.e. isolated naming speed) predicted the child's spontaneous use of labels during a visually presented serial reconstruction task, despite no need for spoken responses. For 6- and 7-year-olds, isolated naming speed also predicted recall. The degree to which verbalization mediated the relation between isolated naming speed and recall changed across development. All relations dissipated by age 10. The same general pattern was observed in an exploratory analysis of delayed recall for which greater demands are placed on rehearsal for item maintenance. Overall, our findings suggest that spontaneous phonological recoding during a standard short-term memory task emerges around age 5, increases in efficiency during the early elementary school years, and is sufficiently automatic by age 10 to support immediate serial recall in most children. Moreover, the findings highlight the need to distinguish between phonological recoding and rehearsal in developmental studies of short-term memory.

Abstract

Culturomics has been temporarily exceeded by the advent of omics approaches such as metabarcoding and metagenomics. However, despite improving our knowledge of microbial population composition, both metabarcoding and metagenomics are not suitable for investigating and experimental testing inferences about microbial ecological roles and evolution. This leads to a recent revival of culturomics approaches, which should be supported by improvements in the available tools for high-throughput microbial identification. This study aimed to update the classical PCR-RFLP approach in light of the currently available knowledge on yeast genomics. We generated and analyzed a database including more than 1400 ascomycetous yeast species, each characterized by PCR-RFLP profiles obtained with 143 different endonucleases. The results allowed for the in silico evaluation of the performance of the tested endonucleases in the yeast species' identification and the generation of FId (Fungal Identifier), an online freely accessible tool for the identification of yeast species according to experimentally obtained PCR-RFLP profiles. Abstract

Background: Despite major advances in the pharmacological treatment of hypertension in the non-pregnant population, treatments for hypertension in pregnancy have remained largely unchanged over the years. There is recent evidence that a more adequate control of maternal blood pressure is achieved when the first given antihypertensive drug is able to correct the underlying hemodynamic disorder of the mother beside normalizing the blood pressure values. Objective: to compare the blood pressure control in women receiving an appropriate or inappropriate antihypertensive therapy in accordance with the baseline hemodynamic findings STUDY DESIGN: prospective multicenter study including a population of women with de novo diagnosis of HDP. A noninvasive assessment of the following maternal parameters was done upon the hospital admission by means of USCOM (Ultrasound Cardiac Output Monitor) before any antihypertensive therapy was given: Cardiac Output (CO), Heart Rate (HR), Systemic Vascular Resistance (SVR), Stroke Volume (SV). The clinician who prescribed the antihypertensive therapy was blinded to the hemodynamic evaluation and based on his preferences or on the local protocols used as 1st line a vasodilator (nifedipine or alpha methyldopa) or a beta-blocker (labetalol). The 1st line pharmacological treatment was retrospectively considered hemodynamically appropriate in either of the following circumstances: 1) Women with a hypodynamic profile (defined as low cardiac output [CO≤5L/min] and/or high systemic vascular resistance [SVR≥1300 dynes*s*cm]) who were administered oral nifedipine or alpha methyldopa. 2) Women with a hyperdynamic profile (defined as normal or high cardiac output [CO >5 L/min] and/or low systemic vascular resistances [SVR<1300 dynes*s*cm-]) who were administered oral labetalol. Abstract

The current paper presents an overview of the workflow of the Working Memory, Cognition and Development (WomCogDev) lab at the University of Geneva, Switzerland, as an example of how Open Science principles can be applied in a developmental psychology lab. We describe the importance and challenges of applying Open Science practices in developmental research and detail each step of our workflow from research design to dissemination. We provide examples and give emphasis to steps that typically receive little attention but that may hold promise for application in other labs (namely, project design, data collection and data analysis). Finally, we discuss the advantages and disadvantages of our workflow and summarize the main takeaways for other labs. By 'opening up' our lab's workflow, we want to encourage other labs to incorporate the aspects that they like into their own workflows and to share their own processes for the continued benefit of others. Abstract

Our previous experiment using retro-cues in a continuous-color delayed estimation task seems to suggest that children in two age groups (i.e., 6-7 and 10-11 years) can benefit from a single cue to direct their attention to one item in working memory but, when two retro-cues are presented, they have difficulties in switching attention from the first to the second cued item. This might suggest that children from 7 to 11 years old cannot refresh items sequentially. However, the result might also be influenced by sub-optimal task characteristics. In the present study we are introducing a number of improvements in order to make the task easier and to test again whether children can switch attention among mental representations.

Abstract

Attention is assumed to support the maintenance of information over brief periods of time. Specifically, it is assumed that, when attention is available, people spontaneously direct their attention to the to-be-remembered information, thereby reactivating it in working memory. This maintenance mechanism is referred to as refreshing. Recent studies examined the response times in an item recognition task to detect the spontaneous use of refreshing in young adults (Vergauwe & Langerock, 2017) and in school-aged children (Vergauwe et al., submitted). While evidence for spontaneous refreshing was observed in young adults when the presentation rate was slow enough, the effect did not replicate in school-aged children, even when the presentation rate was slowed down drastically. This raises the question of whether children can not refresh (i.e. they cannot use the extra free time in an active way) or if they do not want to refresh (i.e. they are not motivated enough to do so). Accordingly, the current study wants to investigate: (1) whether the increase of free time in the presentation phase will produce evidence of spontaneous attentional refreshing and (2) whether motivation plays a role in the spontaneous use of refreshing in school-aged children.

Abstract

This document provides abstracts from various studies on labor and childbirth. The studies examine different ultrasound parameters and their relationship to outcomes such as ECV effectiveness, fetal cardiac function, mode of delivery, cervical dilatation, CPD, and OASI. The findings suggest that ultrasound measurements can be useful in evaluating clinical conditions and predicting outcomes. However, more research is needed to establish specific parameters and improve diagnostic accuracy. Other studies explore the use of intrapartum ultrasound in labor management, including predicting vaginal delivery, diagnosing complications, evaluating the pelvic floor, and assessing fetal position. The studies indicate that intrapartum ultrasound is a valuable tool for decision-making and improving outcomes. Transperineal ultrasound has shown promise in assessing anal sphincter injuries, and both parents and healthcare providers have positive attitudes towards using ultrasound for predicting delivery mode. Additionally, fetal head molding during labor was found to be common and not associated with difficult deliveries, except for parieto-parietal molding which was linked to failed operative deliveries. Abstract

Working memory is a limited-capacity system responsible for maintaining information that is known to dramatically develop throughout childhood and adolescence. Different maintenance mechanisms are proposed to support working memory development, among which is attentional refreshing. Attentional refreshing is assumed to improve the accessibility of working-memory representations by cycling attention from one mental representation to the other, serially. It has been suggested that the efficiency of refreshing increases between the ages of 7 and 14 years old, thereby supporting working memory development. Yet, there is not much research about refreshing in adolescence. Here, we investigate the occurrence of refreshing in 15-year-olds by using a recently-developed index, i.e., the last-presented benefit. Adolescents had to remember a list of four letters and judge whether a subsequent probe letter was present or not in the list. Reaction times to the probe were used to assess the spontaneous occurrence of refreshing. We found that, unlike young adults, 15-year-olds showed consistent speeded responses to probes matching the last-presented memory item, indicating that, in this task, adolescents did not refocus their attention away from the last memory item to initiate refreshing. 40. Do school-aged children spontaneously use refreshing as maintenance strategy in working memory? Testing the effects of free time and motivation.

Abstract

Working memory is the system responsible for maintaining information that is no longer available. Given the long-term impact of working memory in people's lives, it is fundamental to understand which mechanisms underlie it and how these develop with age. A recently proposed mechanism to explain working memory development is attentional refreshing. Refreshing is an attention-based maintenance mechanism that improves the accessibility of mental representations. It is assumed to operate serially, with attention cycling from one mental representation to the other, in order to reactivate all to-be-maintained items. Although it has been suggested that its efficiency increases in children between 7 and 14 years old, recent results contradict this notion. In this article, we modify several important task characteristics of a recently developed paradigm used to detect whether refreshing is spontaneously used in children and to examine whether evidence for spontaneous refreshing could be found. All participants were recruited in public schools in Geneva (Switzerland). In Experiment 1 (68 8-year-olds, 32 girls and 36 boys, and 62 12-year-olds, 35 girls and 27 boys) and Experiment 2 (26 8-year-olds, 11 girls and 15 boys, and 49 12-year-olds, 27 girls and 22 boys), we show that increasing children's motivation and providing more explicitly free time do not result in the spontaneous occurrence of refreshing in 8- and 12-year-olds. The absence of evidence for refreshing in a simple, commonly-used working memory task, despite theory-driven modifications aimed at encouraging it, casts some doubts on the notion that refreshing is crucially involved in children's working memory functioning and development.
