Search

International audience; The Interhelioprobe mission aims to investigate the inner heliosphere and the Sun from close distances (up to 0.3 AU) and from out of the ecliptic plane (up to 30°). In this paper we present the relevance of the mission and its main scientific objectives, describe the scientific payload, ballistic scenario and orbits of the spacecraft. Possibilities of scientific cooperation with other solar and heliospheric space missions are also mentioned.

We report on the Fermi-LAT detection of high-energy emission from the behind-the-limb (BTL) solar flares that occurred on 2013 October 11, and 2014 January 6 and September 1. The Fermi-LAT observations are associated with flares from active regions originating behind both the eastern and western limbs, as determined by STEREO. All three flares are associated with very fast coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and strong solar energetic particle events. We present updated localizations of the >100 MeV photon emission, hard X-ray (HXR)and EUV images, and broadband spectra from 10 keV to 10 GeV, as well as microwave spectra. We also provide a comparison of the BTL flares detected by Fermi-LAT with three on-disk flares and present a study of some of the significant quantities of these flares as an attempt to better understand the acceleration mechanisms at work during these occulted flares. We interpret the HXR emission to be due to electron bremsstrahlung from a coronal thin-target loop top with the accelerated electron spectra steepening at semirelativistic energies. The >100 MeV gamma-rays are best described by a pion-decay model resulting from the interaction of protons (and other ions) in a thick-target photospheric source. The protons are believed to have been accelerated (to energies >10 GeV) in the CME environment and precipitate down to the photosphere from the downstream side of the CME shock and landed on the front side of the Sun, away from the original flare site and the HXR emission., 13 pages, 14 figures published on ApJ

The Nobeyama Radioheliograph observation results and data from the KONUS-Wind spectrometer mounted at the Wind and RHESSI satellites on several solar flares are jointly analyzed. The analysis results for data on the flare of July 18, 2002 are described. The hard X-rays were measured in the 18 keV-15 MeV range (KONUS-Wind), and spectroheliograph measurements were carried out in the radio range at frequencies of 17 and 34 GHz. Spatial distributions of the radio brightness were calculated for the flare of July 18, 2002; they show the presence of two sources at the footpoints and one source at the top of the supposed flaring loop. The energy spectra of hard X-rays, energy flux, and the total number of accelerated electrons were found from the KONUS spectrometer data. The number of accelerated X-ray emitted electrons was estimated as N ≥ 1036, and the maximum X-ray energy flux was estimated as ∼5 × 10−6 erg cm−2 s−1. The spectrum index varies in time from −4.6 to −3.6, i.e., the soft-hard-harder trend is implemented. The spectral index of the radio waves is α ≈ −0.3 at the flare start, attains the value α ≈ −0.5 at the flux maximum, and even change the sign further. The accelerated electron transport model in the flare loop plasma is suggested for interpretation of relationships between parameters of the radio emission and hard X-rays.

We describe the current, 9-spacecraft Interplanetary Network (IPN). The IPN detects about 325 gamma-ray bursts per year, of which about 100 are not localized by any other missions. We give some examples of how the data, which are public, can be utilized.

On 2009 June 5, the Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) onboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope triggered on two short, and relatively dim bursts with spectral properties similar to Soft Gamma Repeater (SGR) bursts. Independent localizations of the bursts by triangulation with the Konus-RF and with the Swift satellite, confirmed their origin from the same, previously unknown, source. The subsequent discovery of X-ray pulsations with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE), confirmed the magnetar nature of the new source, SGR J0418+5729. We describe here the Fermi/GBM observations, the discovery and the localization of this new SGR, and our infrared and Chandra X-ray observations. We also present a detailed temporal and spectral study of the two GBM bursts. SGR J0418+5729 is the second source discovered in the same region of the sky in the last year, the other one being SGR J0501+4516. Both sources lie in the direction of the galactic anti-center and presumably at the nearby distance of ~2 kpc (assuming they reside in the Perseus arm of our galaxy). The near-threshold GBM detection of bursts from SGR J0418+5729 suggests that there may be more such dim SGRs throughout our galaxy, possibly exceeding the population of bright SGRs. Finally, using sample statistics, we conclude that the implications of the new SGR discovery on the number of observable active magnetars in our galaxy at any given time is, 6 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables; accepted for publication in ApJL on 2010 January 8

We present the results of the high-redshift GRB 050904 at z = 6.295 from joint spectral analysis among Swift- BAT, Konus-Wind, and Suzaku-WAM, covering a wide energy range of 15-5000 keV. TheFspectrum peak energy, Epeak, was measured at 314 +173 � 89 keV, corresponding to 2291 +1263 � 634 keV in the source frame, and the isotropic equivalent radiated energy, Eiso, was estimated to be 1.04 +0:25 � 0:17 � 10 54 erg. Both are among the highest values that have ever been measured. GRBs with such a high Eiso (� 10 54 erg) might be associated with prompt optical emis- sion. The derived spectral and energetic parameters are consistent with the correlation between the rest-frame Ep;i and the Eiso (Amati relation), but not with the correlation between the intrinsic peak energy Ep;i and the collimation- corrected energy E� (Ghirlanda relation), unless the density of the circumburst environment of this burst is much larger than the nominal value, as suggested by other wavelength observations. We also discuss the possibility that this burst is an outlier in the correlation between Ep;i and the peak luminosity Lp (Yonetoku relation).

The light curve, energy spectra, energetics, and IPN localization of an exceedingly intense short duration hard spectrum burst, GRB 070201, obtained from Konus-Wind, INTEGRAL (SPI-ACS), and MESSENGER data are presented. The total fluence of the burst and the peak flux are $S = 2.00_{-0.26}^{+0.10} \times 10^{-5}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ and $F_{max} = 1.61_{-0.50}^{+0.29} \times 10^{-3}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. The IPN error box has an area of 446 square arcminutes and covers the peripheral part of the M31 galaxy. Assuming that the source of the burst is indeed in M31 at a distance of 0.78 Mpc, the measured values of the fluence $S$ and maximum flux $F_{max}$ correspond to a total energy of $Q = 1.5 \times 10^{45}$ erg, and a maximum luminosity $L = 1.2 \times 10^{47}$ erg s$^{-1}$. These data are in good agreement with the corresponding characteristics of the previously observed giant flares from other soft gamma repeaters. The evidence for the identification of this event as a giant flare from a soft gamma repeater in the M31 galaxy is presented., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, submitted to ApJ

Swift triggered on a precursor to the main burst of GRB 061121 (z=1.314), allowing observations to be made from the optical to gamma-ray bands. Many other telescopes, including Konus-Wind, XMM-Newton, ROTSE and the Faulkes Telescope North, also observed the burst. The gamma-ray, X-ray and UV/optical emission all showed a peak ~75s after the trigger, although the optical and X-ray afterglow components also appear early on - before, or during, the main peak. Spectral evolution was seen throughout the burst, with the prompt emission showing a clear positive correlation between brightness and hardness. The Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) of the prompt emission, stretching from 1eV up to 1MeV, is very flat, with a peak in the flux density at ~1keV. The optical-to-X-ray spectra at this time are better fitted by a broken, rather than single, power-law, similar to previous results for X-ray flares. The SED shows spectral hardening as the afterglow evolves with time. This behaviour might be a symptom of self-Comptonisation, although circumstellar densities similar to those found in the cores of molecular clouds would be required. The afterglow also decays too slowly to be accounted for by the standard models. Although the precursor and main emission show different spectral lags, both are consistent with the lag-luminosity correlation for long bursts. GRB 061121 is the instantaneously brightest long burst yet detected by Swift. Using a combination of Swift and Konus-Wind data, we estimate an isotropic energy of 2.8x10^53 erg over 1keV - 10MeV in the GRB rest frame. A probable jet break is detected at ~2x10^5s, leading to an estimate of ~10^51 erg for the beaming-corrected gamma-ray energy., 17 pages, 11 figures (1 in colour), accepted for publication in ApJ

The detection of a gamma-ray burst (GRB) in the solar neighborhood would have very important implications for GRB phenomenology. The leading theories for cosmological GRBs would not be able to explain such events. The final bursts of evaporating Primordial Black Holes (PBHs), however, would be a natural explanation for local GRBs. We present a novel technique that can constrain the distance to gamma-ray bursts using detections from widely separated, non-imaging spacecraft. This method can determine the actual distance to the burst if it is local. We applied this method to constrain distances to a sample of 36 short duration GRBs detected by the Interplanetary Network (IPN) that show observational properties that are expected from PBH evaporations. These bursts have minimum possible distances in the 10^13-10^18 cm (7-10^5 AU) range, consistent with the expected PBH energetics and with a possible origin in the solar neighborhood, although none of the bursts can be unambiguously demonstrated to be local. The long burst GRB 050717 was observed simultaneously by the Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) on Swift and the Konus instrument on Wind. Significant hard to soft spectral evolution was seen. Early gamma-ray and X-ray emission was detected by both BAT and the X-Ray Telescope (XRT) on Swift. The XRT continued to observe the burst for 7.1 days and detect it for 1.4 days. The X-ray light curve showed a classic decay pattern; the afterglow was too faint for a jet break to be detected. No optical, infrared, or ultraviolet counterpart was discovered despite deep searches within 14 hr of the burst. Two particular features of the prompt emission make GRB 050717 a very unusual burst. First, the peak of the νF(ν) spectrum was observed to be 2401 keV for the main peak, which is the highest value of Epeak ever observed. Second, the spectral lag for GRB 050717 was determined to be 2.5 ± 2.6 ms, consistent with zero and unusually short for a long burst. This lag measurement suggests that this burst has a high intrinsic luminosity and hence is at high redshift (z > 2.7). Despite these unusual features, GRB 050717 exhibits the classic prompt and afterglow behavior of a gamma-ray burst.

We present a broadband study of gamma-ray burst (GRB) 091024A within the context of other ultra-long-duration GRBs. An unusually long burst detected by Konus-Wind, Swift, and Fermi, GRB 091024A has prompt emission episodes covering ~1300 s, accompanied by bright and highly structured optical emission captured by various rapid-response facilities, including the 2-m autonomous robotic Faulkes North and Liverpool Telescopes, KAIT, S-LOTIS, and SRO. We also observed the burst with 8- and 10-m class telescopes and determine the redshift to be z = 1.0924 \pm 0.0004. We find no correlation between the optical and gamma-ray peaks and interpret the optical light curve as being of external origin, caused by the reverse and forward shock of a highly magnetized jet (R_B ~ 100-200). Low-level emission is detected throughout the near-background quiescent period between the first two emission episodes of the Konus-Wind data, suggesting continued central-engine activity; we discuss the implications of this ongoing emission and its impact on the afterglow evolution and predictions. We summarize the varied sample of historical GRBs with exceptionally long durations in gamma-rays (>~ 1000 s) and discuss the likelihood of these events being from a separate population; we suggest ultra-long GRBs represent the tail of the duration distribution of the long GRB population., Updated abstract, acknowledgements. Recently, a number of peculiar flares have been reported, which demonstrate significant non-thermal particle signatures with a low, if any, thermal emission, that implies close association of the observed emission with the primary energy release/electron acceleration region. This paper presents a flare that appears a "cold" one at the impulsive phase, while displaying a delayed heating later on. Using HXR data from \kw, microwave observations by SSRT, RSTN, NoRH and NoRP, context observations, and 3D modeling, we study the energy release, particle acceleration and transport, and the relationships between the nonthermal and thermal signatures. The flaring process is found to involve interaction between a small and a big loop and the accelerated particles divided in roughly equal numbers between them. Precipitation of the electrons from the small loop produced only weak thermal response because the loop volume was small, while the electrons trapped in the big loop lost most of their energy in the coronal part of the loop, which resulted in the coronal plasma heating but no or only weak chromospheric evaporation, and thus unusually weak soft X-ray emission. Energy losses of fast electrons in the big tenuous loop were slow resulting in the observed delay of the plasma heating. We determined that the impulsively accelerated electron population had a beamed angular distribution in the direction of electric force along the magnetic field of the small loop. The accelerated particle transport in big loop was primarily mediated by turbulent waves like in the other reported cold flares., Comment: ApJ accepted, 18 pp., 13 figures

GRB 091127 is a bright gamma-ray burst (GRB) detected by Swift at a redshift z=0.49 and associated with SN 2009nz. We present the broadband analysis of the GRB prompt and afterglow emission and study its high-energy properties in the context of the GRB/SN association. While the high luminosity of the prompt emission and standard afterglow behavior are typical of cosmological long GRBs, its low energy release, soft spectrum and unusual spectral lag connect this GRB to the class of sub-energetic bursts. We discuss the suppression of high-energy emission in this burst, and investigate whether this behavior could be connected with the sub-energetic nature of the explosion., 12 pages, 7 figures, submitted to ApJ

In 2004, SGR 1806-20 underwent a period of intense and long-lasting burst activity that included the giant flare of 27 December 2004 -- the most intense extra-solar transient event ever detected at Earth. During this active episode, we routinely monitored the source with Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer and occasionally with Chandra. During the course of these observations, we identified two relatively bright bursts observed with Konus-Wind in hard X-rays that were followed by extended X-ray tails or afterglows lasting hundreds to thousands of seconds. Here, we present detailed spectral and temporal analysis of these events observed about 6 and 1.5 months prior to the 27 December 2004 Giant Flare. We find that both X-ray tails are consistent with a cooling blackbody of constant radius. These spectral results are qualitatively similar to those of the burst afterglows recorded from SGR 1900+14 and recently from SGR 1550-5418. However, the latter two sources exhibit significant increase in their pulsed X-ray intensity following the burst, while we did not detect any significant changes in the RMS pulsed amplitude during the SGR 1806-20 events. Moreover, we find that the fraction of energy partitioned to the burst (prompt energy release) and the tail (afterglow) differs by an order of magnitude between SGR 1900+14 and SGR 1806-20. We suggest that such differences can be attributed to differences in the crustal heating mechanism of these neutron stars combined with the geometry of the emitting areas., Comment: Accepted for publication in the ApJ

We report on the spectral cross-calibration results of the Konus-Wind, the Suzaku/WAM, and the Swift/BAT instruments using simultaneously observed gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). This is the first attempt to use simultaneously observed GRBs as a spectral calibration source to understand systematic problems among the instruments. Based on these joint spectral fits, we find that 1) although a constant factor (a normalization factor) agrees within 20% among the instruments, the BAT constant factor shows a systematically smaller value by 10-20% compared to that of Konus-Wind, 2) there is a systematic trend that the low-energy photon index becomes steeper by 0.1-0.2 and Epeak becomes systematically higher by 10-20% when including the BAT data in the joint fits, and 3) the high-energy photon index agrees within 0.2 among the instruments. Our results show that cross-calibration based on joint spectral analysis is an important step to understanding the instrumental effects which could be affecting the scientific results from the GRB prompt emission data., Comment: 82 pages, 88 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

We report on a large stellar flare from the nearby dMe flare star EV Lac observed by the Swift and Konus-Wind satellites and the Liverpool Telescope. It is the first large stellar flare from a dMe flare star to result in a Swift trigger based on its hard X-ray intensity. Its peak f_X from 0.3--100 keV of 5.3x10^-8 erg/cm2/s is nearly 7000 times larger than the star's quiescent coronal flux, and the change in magnitude in the white filter is >4.7. This flare also caused a transient increase in EV Lac's bolometric luminosity (L_bol) during the early stages of the flare, with a peak estimated L_X/L_bol ~3.1. We apply flare loop hydrodynamic modeling to the plasma parameter temporal changes to derive a loop semi-length of l/Rstar =0.37 +/-0.07. The soft X-ray spectrum of the flare reveals evidence of iron Kalpha emission at 6.4 keV. We model the Kalpha emission as fluorescence from the hot flare source irradiating the photospheric iron, and derive loop heights of h/Rstar=0.1, consistent within factors of a few with the heights inferred from hydrodynamic modeling. The Kalpha emission feature shows variability on time scales of ~200 s which is difficult to interpret using the pure fluorescence hypothesis. We examine Kalpha emission produced by collisional ionization from accelerated particles, and find parameter values for the spectrum of accelerated particles which can accommodate the increased amount of Kalpha flux and the lack of observed nonthermal emission in the 20-50 keV spectral region., 8 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

Between 1996 July and 2002 April, one or more spacecraft of the interplanetary network detected 787 cosmic gamma-ray bursts that were also detected by the Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor and/or Wide-Field X-Ray Camera experiments aboard the BeppoSAX spacecraft. During this period, the network consisted of up to six spacecraft, and using triangulation, the localizations of 475 bursts were obtained. In 2008 August, the new soft gamma-ray repeater SGR 0501+4516 was discovered by Swift. The source was soon confirmed by several groups in space- and ground-based multi-wavelength observations. In this letter we report the analysis of five short bursts from the recently discovered SGR, detected with Konus-Wind gamma-ray burst spectrometer. Properties of the time histories of the observed events, as well as results of multi-channel spectral analysis, both in the 20--300 keV energy range, show, that the source exhibits itself as a typical SGR. We follow the bright, highly energetic afterglow of Swift-discovered GRB 080721 at z=2.591 out to 36 days or 3e6 s since the trigger in the optical and X-ray bands. We do not detect a break in the late-time light curve inferring a limit on the opening angle of theta_j >= 7.3 deg and setting tight constraints on the total energy budget of the burst of E_gamma >= 9.9e51 erg within the fireball model. To obey the fireball model closure relations the GRB jet must be expanding into a homogeneous surrounding medium and likely lies behind a significant column of dust. The energy constraint we derive can be used as observational input for models of the progenitors of long gamma-ray bursts: we discuss how such high collimation-corrected energies could be accommodated with certain parameters of the standard massive star core-collapse models. We can, however, most probably rule out a magnetar progenitor for this GRB which would require 100% efficiency to reach the observed total energy., 11 pages, 6 figures (3 colour), accepted for publication in MNRAS following minor revision of Sections 4.2 and 5

We present the results of the highest redshift GRB 050904 from joint spectral analyses among Swift/BAT, Konus‐Wind and Suzaku‐WAM covering a wide energy range of 15–5000 keV. The peak energy was first measured at 338−93+168 keV, corresponding to 2465−678+1225 keV in the source frame. This is one of the highest value that has been ever meaured. The derived spectral and energetic parameters are consisitent with the Amati relation, but not with the Ghirlada relation. This implies that the circumburst density of this burst might be larger than the nominal value, as suggested by other wavelength observations. We also found that the burst could be an outlier in Yonetoku relation.

The long, bright gamma-ray burst GRB 070125 was localized by the Interplanetary Network. We present light curves of the prompt gamma-ray emission as observed by Konus-WIND, RHESSI, Suzaku-WAM, and \textit{Swift}-BAT. We detail the results of joint spectral fits with Konus and RHESSI data. The burst shows moderate hard-to-soft evolution in its multi-peaked emission over a period of about one minute. The total burst fluence as observed by Konus is $1.79 \times 10^{-4}$ erg/cm$^2$ (20 keV--10 MeV). Using the spectroscopic redshift $z=1.548$, we find that the burst is consistent with the ``Amati'' $E_{peak,i}-E_{iso}$ correlation. Assuming a jet opening angle derived from broadband modeling of the burst afterglow, GRB 070125 is a significant outlier to the ``Ghirlanda'' $E_{peak,i}-E_\gamma$ correlation. Its collimation-corrected energy release $E_\gamma = 2.5 \times 10^{52}$ ergs is the largest yet observed., Comment: 25 pages, 6 figures; accepted for publication in ApJ. We analyze the data obtained when the Konus-Wind gamma-ray spectrometer detected a giant flare in SGR 1806-20 on December 27, 2004. The flare is similar in appearance to the two known flares in SGR 0526-66 and SGR 1900+14 while exceeding them significantly in intensity. The enormous X-ray and gamma-ray flux in the narrow initial pulse of the flare leads to almost instantaneous deep saturation of the gamma-ray detectors, ruling out the possibility of directly measuring the intensity, time profile, and energy spectrum of the initial pulse. In this situation, the detection of an attenuated signal of Compton back-scattering of the initial pulse emission by the Moon with the Helicon gamma-ray spectrometer onboard the Coronas-F satellite was an extremely favorable circumstance. Analysis of this signal has yielded the most reliable temporal, energy, and spectral characteristics of the pulse. The temporal and spectral characteristics of the pulsating flare tail have been determined from Konus-Wind data. Its soft spectra have been found to contain also a hard power-law component extending to 10 MeV. A weak afterglow of SGR 1806-20 decaying over several hours is traceable up to 1 MeV. We also consider the overall picture of activity of SGR 1806-20 in the emission of recurrent bursts before and after the giant flare., 29 pages including 18 figures; to appear in Astronomy Letters, 2007, 33, p 1-18

This lag measurement suggests that this burst has a high intrinsic luminosity and hence is at high redshift (z > 2.7). Despite these unusual features GRB 050717 exhibits the classic prompt and afterglow behaviour of a gamma-ray burst.

We report the simultaneous observations of the prompt emission in the gamma-ray and hard X-ray bands by the Swift-BAT and the KONUS-Wind instruments of the short-hard burst, GRB 060313. The observations reveal multiple peaks in both the gamma-ray and hard X-ray bands suggesting a highly variable outflow from the central explosion. We also describe the early-time observations of the X-ray and UV/Optical afterglows by the Swift XRT and UVOT instruments. The combination of the X-ray and UV/Optical observations provide the most comprehensive lightcurves to date of a short-hard burst at such an early epoch. The afterglows exhibit complex structure with different decay indices and flaring. This behavior can be explained by the combination of a structured jet, radiative loss of energy, and decreasing microphysics parameters occurring in a circum-burst medium with densities varying by a factor of approximately two on a length scale of 10^17 cm. These density variations are normally associated with the environment of a massive star and inhomogeneities in its windy medium. However, the mean density of the observed medium (n approximately 10^−4 cm^3) is much less than that expected for a massive star. Although the collapse of a massive star as the origin of GRB 060313 is unlikely, the merger of a compact binary also poses problems for explaining the behavior of this burst. Two possible suggestions for explaining this scenario are: some short bursts may arise from a mechanism that does not invoke the conventional compact binary model, or soft late-time central engine activity is producing UV/optical but no X-ray flaring., Comment: 28 pages, 6 figures. We present interplanetary network localization, spectral, and time history information for 7 episodes of exceptionally intense gamma-ray emission from Cygnus X-1. The outbursts occurred between 1995 and 2003, with durations up to \~28000 seconds. The observed 15 - 300 keV peak fluxes and fluences reached 3E-7 erg /cm2 s, and 8E-4 erg / cm2 respectively. By combining the triangulations of these outbursts we derive an ~1700 square arcminute (3 sigma) error ellipse which contains Cygnus X-1 and no other known high energy sources. The outbursts reported here occurred both when Cyg X-1 was in the hard state as well as in the soft one, and at various orbital phases. GRB 110918A is the brightest long GRB detected by Konus-WIND during its 19 years of continuous observations and the most luminous GRB ever observed since the beginning of the cosmological era in 1997. We report on the final IPN localization of this event and its detailed multiwavelength study with a number of space-based instruments. The prompt emission is characterized by a typical duration, a moderare $E_{peak}$ of the time-integrated spectrum, and strong hard-to-soft evolution. The high observed energy fluence yields, at z=0.984, a huge isotropic-equivalent energy release $E_{iso}=(2.1\pm0.1)\times10^{54}$ erg. The record-breaking energy flux observed at the peak of the short, bright, hard initial pulse results in an unprecedented isotropic-equivalent luminosity $L_{iso}=(4.7\pm0.2)\times10^{54}$erg s$^{-1}$. A tail of the soft gamma-ray emission was detected with temporal and spectral behavior typical of that predicted by the synchrotron forward-shock model. Swift/XRT and Swift/UVOT observed the bright afterglow from 1.2 to 48 days after the burst and revealed no evidence of a jet break. The post-break scenario for the afterglow is preferred from our analysis, with a hard underlying electron spectrum and ISM-like circumburst environment implied. We conclude that, among multiple reasons investigated, the tight collimation of the jet must have been a key ingredient to produce this unusually bright burst. The inferred jet opening angle of 1.7-3.4 deg results in reasonable values of the collimation-corrected radiated energy and the peak luminosity, which, however, are still at the top of their distributions for such tightly collimated events. We estimate a detection horizon for a similar ultraluminous GRB of $z\sim7.5$ for Konus-WIND, and $z\sim12$ for Swift/BAT, which stresses the importance of GRBs as probes of the early Universe., Comment: 22 pages, 20 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The Suzaku Wide-band All-sky Monitor (WAM) consists of thick BGO anti-coincidence shields of the Hard X-ray Detectors (HXD). It views about half of the sky and has a geometrical area of 800 cm per side and an effective area of 400 cm, even at 1 MeV. Hence, the WAM can provide unique opportunities to detect high-energy emission from GRBs and solar flares in the sub-MeV to MeV range. The WAM has detected more than 400 GRBs and 100 solar flares since its launch. This paper describes the in-flight performance of the HXD/WAM during the initial two years of operations, including the in-flight energy response, spectral and timing capabilities, and in-orbit background.
