Abstract

The overarching aim of the present study is to sort out the taxonomy of a group of gingers that include the useful and worldwide economically important green cardamom, Elettaria cardamomum, and its wild relatives, to highlight potentially overlooked genetic resources. These species occur naturally in India and Sri Lanka, and our study facilitates more appropriate management priorities for the remaining forest fragments in which they occur. We used NGS Hyb‐Seq methods and sampled four species of the Alpinia I (Fax) clade, six representatives of Aframomum and Renealmia as well as two other basally flowering Sri Lankan species. This is the only pantropically distributed lineage within the entire family, and our result shows that the Alpinia I clade in fact is simply the genus Elettaria (confined to India and Sri Lanka), which is sister to the genera Aframomum (Africa) and Renealmia (Africa and Neotropics). The taxonomic implications are: (1) a recircumscription of Elettaria comprising seven species (E. cardamomum, E. ensal, E. floribunda, E. involucrata, E. rufescens as well as two new species, E. facifera and E. tulipifera described here); (2) the Sri Lankan endemic genus Cyphostigma should be retained; (3) the new monotypic genus, Srilankanthus endemic in Sri Lanka, is described with S. nemoralis, formerly Amomum nemorale, as type. A key is provided to the seven species of Elettaria and lectotypifications are made for five species (Cyphostigma pulchellum, Elettaria floribunda, E. involucrata, E. nemoralis, E. rufescens). Abstract

In preparation for a full taxonomic revision of the Neotropical genera of Costaceae (i.e., Chamaecostus, Costus, Dimerocostus, and Monocostus), we present the description of 17 new species of Neotropical Costus and one new species of the Neotropic endemic genus Chamaecostus with notes on their distribution and ecology, vernacular names (when known), and diagnostic characters for identification. Distribution maps are included for all species, and each description is accompanied by photographic plates illustrating diagnostic characters.

Abstract

© The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Limited 2021, corrected publication 2022, The COVID-19 pandemic has increased negative emotions and decreased positive emotions globally. Left unchecked, these emotional changes might have a wide array of adverse impacts. To reduce negative emotions and increase positive emotions, we tested the effectiveness of reappraisal, an emotion-regulation strategy that modifies how one thinks about a situation. Participants from 87 countries and regions (n = 21,644) were randomly assigned to one of two brief reappraisal interventions (reconstrual or repurposing) or one of two control conditions (active or passive). Results revealed that both reappraisal interventions (vesus both control conditions) consistently reduced negative emotions and increased positive emotions across different measures. Reconstrual and repurposing interventions had similar effects. Importantly, planned exploratory analyses indicated that reappraisal interventions did not reduce intentions to practice preventive health behaviours. Abstract

Over the past 10 years, Oosterhof and Todorov's valence-dominance model has emerged as the most prominent account of how people evaluate faces on social dimensions. in this model, two dimensions (valence and dominance) underpin social judgements of faces. Because this model has primarily been developed and tested in Western regions, it is unclear whether these findings apply to other regions. We addressed this question by replicating Oosterhof and Todorov's methodology across 11 world regions, 41 countries and 11,570 participants. When we used Oosterhof and Todorov's original analysis strategy, the valence-dominance model generalized across regions. When we used an alternative methodology to allow for correlated dimensions, we observed much less generalization. Abstract

Over the past 10 years, Oosterhof and Todorov's valence-dominance model has emerged as the most prominent account of how people evaluate faces on social dimensions. In this model, two dimensions (valence and dominance) underpin social judgements of faces. Because this model has primarily been developed and tested in Western regions, it is unclear whether these findings apply to other regions. We addressed this question by replicating Oosterhof and Todorov's methodology across 11 world regions, 41 countries and 11,570 participants. When we used Oosterhof and Todorov's original analysis strategy, the valence-dominance model generalized across regions. When we used an alternative methodology to allow for correlated dimensions, we observed much less generalization. Collectively, these results suggest that, while the valence-dominance model generalizes very well across regions when dimensions are forced to be orthogonal, regional differences are revealed when we use different extraction methods and correlate and rotate the dimension reduction solution. Abstract

Over the last ten years, Oosterhof and Todorov’s (2008) valence-dominance model of social judgments of faces has emerged as the most prominent account of how we evaluate faces on social dimensions. In this model, two dimensions (valence and dominance) underpin social judgments of faces. How well this model generalizes across world regions is a critical, yet unanswered, question. We will address this question by replicating Oosterhof and Todorov’s (2008) methodology across all world regions (Africa, Asia, Central America and Mexico, Eastern Europe, Middle East, USA and Canada, Australia and New Zealand, Scandinavia, South America, UK, Western Europe, total N ≥ 9525) and using a diverse set of face stimuli. If we uncover systematic regional differences in social judgments, this will fundamentally change how social perception research is done and interpreted. If we find consistency across regions, this will ground future theory in an appropriately powered empirical test of an underlying assumption.

Abstract

Attempts at historical reconstruction are based on limited data. We are more likely to produce accurate historical reconstructions by utilizing information from diverse sources and pooling data within the relevant research communities which will allow us to build up a moving picture of the geological, climatic, and biological evolution of our planet. We suggest that dated phylogenies of plants can contribute greatly to a better understanding of Earth history. Timing of phylogenetic splits of lowland restricted lineages on either side of the Andes could provide information on the timing of montane uplift and associated climatic changes. The timing of the arrival and diversification of organisms restricted to specific climatic regimes at a particular altitude can provide information on the age at which mountains reached a height adequate for that climate once corrected for global climate changes. As a model for study, we discuss how dated phylogenies in biome rich Colombia may contribute to an understanding of geological and climatic change in north‐western South America. Lowland wet forest restricted lineages separated from the mid‐Miocene, whereas lineages primarily restricted to mid‐altitude cloud forests began to diversify from the mid‐ to late‐Miocene and the majority of high‐altitude Páramo lineages began to diversify during the Pliocene. The age of diversification of altitudinally restricted lineages therefore gives an indication of the age at which particular altitudes may have been reached. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

La responsabilidad social empresarial (RSE) se ha convertido en un tema de importancia a nivel internacional, sin embargo en el Perú aún no se observan muchos estudios que permitan conocer su impacto en el consumidor. Por tanto, esta investigación busca determinar la influencia de la Responsabilidad Social Empresarial en el comportamiento de compra de las consumidoras de revistas cuyas edades se encuentran entre 18 a 24 años en Lima Metropolitana. Para cuantificar la intención de compra y la disposición a pagar por las acciones de responsabilidad social desarrolladas por las empresas, se realizó una investigación bajo la Metodología de los Modelos de Elección Discreta. Dicho experimento se llevó a cabo utilizando una muestra por conveniencia de 132 consumidoras de revistas cuyas edades se encuentran entre 18 a 24 años en Lima Metropolitana. La investigación brinda evidencia empírica de la relación positiva entre la Responsabilidad Social Empresarial y el comportamiento de compra de la muestra. Los resultados del estudio indican que el efecto de la Responsabilidad Social Empresarial en su conjunto es superior al de las Competencias Corporativas. El presente estudio es una ampliación del alcance de la investigación doctoral La Influencia de la Responsabilidad Social Empresarial en el Comportamiento de Compra de los Consumidores Peruanos (Marquina, 2009). Con la autorización del autor, se ha utilizado la tesis como base para la revisión de literatura y la aplicación de la metodología. Therefore, this research seeks to determine the influence of Corporate Social Responsibility on consumer magazine’s buying behavior whose ages are between 18-24 years in Metropolitan Lima. To quantify the purchase intention and the disposition to pay for the corporate social responsibility actions developed by companies an experiment was carried out under the discrete choice model. This experiment was carried out using a random for convenience of 132 consumer magazine’s buying whose ages are between 18-24 years in Metropolitan Lima. This investigation provides empirical evidence of the positive relationship between the corporate social responsibility and the purchasing behavior of the sample. The results of the study indicate that the effect of the corporate social responsibility as a whole is superior to that of the corporate competencies. The present study is an extension of the scope of the doctoral investigation “The Influence of the Corporate Social Responsibility in the Purchasing Behavior of Peruvian Consumers” (Marquina, 2009). Abstract

We document conservation contributions of La Miel 1 hydropower station, based upon 18.763 biological registers, of 1.070 species and changes in land cover/use (1991 - 2011) in ca. 20.000 ha. 17 - 23 species with some degree of threat were reported, especially some with small distributional ranges threatened by deforestation. For all terrestrial species the project has allowed habitat improvement, since forest cover changed from 188 ha (6%) to 2.527,3 (89.5%) during the last 20 years. The positive effect is also revealed with a change from many small habitat fragments (<1.000 ha) to a single larger one (> 4.000 ha). Although conservation of biodiversity was not an explicit environmental target, the fact that Miel I have promoted biological research, allows to document its current contributions to species conservation. It is thus proposed that hydropower enterprises may, through habitat protection, restoration and research, join national biodiversity conservation strategies; especially for those projects located in areas where conservation actions are insufficient. Abstract

Over the past 10 years, Oosterhof and Todorov’s valence–dominance model has emerged as the most prominent account of how people evaluate faces on social dimensions. In this model, two dimensions (valence and dominance) underpin social judgements of faces. Because this model has primarily been developed and tested in Western regions, it is unclear whether these findings apply to other regions. We addressed this question by replicating Oosterhof and Todorov’s methodology across 11 world regions, 41 countries and 11,570 participants. When we used Oosterhof and Todorov’s original analysis strategy, the valence–dominance model generalized across regions. When we used an alternative methodology to allow for correlated dimensions, we observed much less generalization. Collectively, these results suggest that, while the valence–dominance model generalizes very well across regions when dimensions are forced to be orthogonal, regional differences are revealed when we use different extraction methods and correlate and rotate the dimension reduction solution.

Abstract

La responsabilidad social empresarial (RSE) se ha convertido en un tema de importancia a nivel internacional, sin embargo en el Perú aún no se observan muchos estudios que permitan conocer su impacto en el consumidor. Por tanto, esta investigación busca determinar la influencia de la Responsabilidad Social Empresarial en el comportamiento de compra de las consumidoras de revistas cuyas edades se encuentran entre 18 a 24 años en Lima Metropolitana. Para cuantificar la intención de compra y la disposición a pagar por las acciones de responsabilidad social desarrolladas por las empresas, se realizó una investigación bajo la Metodología de los Modelos de Elección Discreta. Dicho experimento se llevó a cabo utilizando una muestra por conveniencia de 132 consumidoras de revistas cuyas edades se encuentran entre 18 a 24 años en Lima Metropolitana. La investigación brinda evidencia empírica de la relación positiva entre la Responsabilidad Social Empresarial y el comportamiento de compra de la muestra. Los resultados del estudio indican que el efecto de la Responsabilidad Social Empresarial en su conjunto es superior al de las Competencias Corporativas. El presente estudio es una ampliación del alcance de la investigación doctoral La Influencia de la Responsabilidad Social Empresarial en el Comportamiento de Compra de los Consumidores Peruanos (Marquina, 2009). Con la autorización del autor, se ha utilizado la tesis como base para la revisión de literatura y la aplicación de la metodología., Corporate Social Responsibility has become a matter of importance at an international level, also in Peru there are not many studies that show its effect on the consumer. Therefore, this research seeks to determine the influence of Corporate Social Responsibility on consumer magazine’s buying behavior whose ages are between 18-24 years in Metropolitan Lima. To quantify the purchase intention and the disposition to pay for the corporate social responsibility actions developed by companies an experiment was carried out under the discrete choice model. This experiment was carried out using a random for convenience of 132 consumer magazine’s buying whose ages are between 18-24 years in Metropolitan Lima. This investigation provides empirical evidence of the positive relationship between the corporate social responsibility and the purchasing behavior of the sample. The results of the study indicate that the effect of the corporate social responsibility as a whole is superior to that of the corporate competencies. The present study is an extension of the scope of the doctoral investigation “The Influence of the Corporate Social Responsibility in the Purchasing Behavior of Peruvian Consumers” (Marquina, 2009). With permission of the author, the thesis has been used as the basis for the literature review and application of the methodology.
