OBJECTIVES:. To identify triggering receptor expressed in myeloid cells-like transcript-1 positive (TLT-1+) microparticles (MPs) and evaluate if their presence is associated with clinical outcomes and/or disease severity in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). DESIGN:. Retrospective cohort study. SETTING:. ARDS Network clinical trials. PATIENTS:. A total of 564 patients were diagnosed with ARDS. INTERVENTIONS:. None. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS:. Using flow cytometry, we demonstrated the presence of TLT-1+ platelet-derived microparticles (PMP) that bind fibrinogen in plasma samples from fresh donors. We retrospectively quantified TLT-1, glycoprotein (Gp) 1b, or αIIbβIIIa immunopositive microparticles in plasma samples from patients with ARDS enrolled in the ARMA, KARMA, and LARMA (Studies 01 and 03 lower versus higher tidal volume, ketoconazole treatment, and lisofylline treatment Clincial Trials) ARDS Network clinical trials and evaluated the relationship between these measures and clinical outcomes. No associations were found between Gp1b+ MPs and clinical outcomes for any of the cohorts. When stratified by quartile, associations were found for survival, ventilation-free breathing, and thrombocytopenia with αIIbβIIIa+ and TLT-1+ MPs (χ2 p < 0.001). Notably, 63 of 64 patients in this study who failed to achieve unassisted breathing had TLT+ PMP in the 75th percentile. In all three cohorts, patients whose TLT+ MP counts were higher than the median had higher Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation III scores, were more likely to present with thrombocytopenia and were 3.7 times (p < 0.001) more likely to die than patients with lower TLT+ PMP after adjusting for other risk factors. CONCLUSIONS:. Although both αIIbβIIIa+ and TLT+ microparticles (αIIbβIIIa, TLT-1) were associated with mortality, TLT-1+ MPs demonstrated stronger correlations with Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation III scores, unassisted breathing, and multiple system organ failure. These findings warrant further exploration of the mechanistic role of TLT-1+ PMP in ARDS or acute lung injury progression.

Multiple worldwide efforts, including research experiences and internships for students, have been developed to increase diversity in STEM. In order to understand the outcomes of these research experiences, instruments have become available, but surprisingly, Spanish instruments for these purposes are scarce. The evaluation of diverse scientific experiences and their influence on science identity is imperative. For this reason, we aimed to translate, and evaluate a Science Identity Survey for Puerto Rican high school students. A committee of experts evaluated the original survey of Science Identity and it was translated to Spanish using back-translation. Think-aloud results revealed that students' perception of their: (1) science competence is based on their grades, understanding, knowledge, and learning; (2) performance is based on design and completion of a scientific task; (3) recognition is based on the value that others give to science. The survey was analyzed to determine its dimensionality and reliability. A Cronbach's alpha of .857 was obtained, which suggests that the items have a good internal consistency. Exploratory factor analysis was performed and three factors; competence, performance and recognition were retained. This version of the survey was deemed to be an appropriate instrument to address student science identity.

This dialogue is a structured account of an experiment that we, as researchers in the Va Moana-Pacific Spaces cluster at Auckland University of Technology, carried out during and between lockdowns in Tamaki Makaurau Auckland during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020-2021. The previous year, Va Moana had begun to investigate how--without shared physical presence--virtual participation in events can uphold central Maori and Moana (Pacific) traditional values of tikanga (te reo Maori: correct procedure, custom) and teu le va (gagana Samoa: nurturing relational space). Aspects of our research concern practices that continue to emphasize va--as the attachment and feeling for place and relatedness--outside the Pacific homelands. These nascent practices contribute to an emerging understanding of place as an imaginary space of belonging, in which online environments (the digital va) play a role. The outbreak of COVID-19 gave this general interest unexpected but sharp focus. In this essay, we present, contextualize, and analyze excerpts from three conversations between Va Moana team members in Aotearoa. Held during, between, and after lockdown periods between March and November 2020, these conversations were conducted either fully online or in a blended format. In the latter case, some members met face-to-face in a 'hub,' and others used online platforms to participate in reviewing and reorganizing our research relationships under the new conditions, using the challenge thrown before us as an opportunity for experimentation and change. Summary: Emerging evidence from the western literature suggests an increasing focus on applying nature-based interventions for mental health improvements. However, in Indigenous communities, caring for country has always been central to the Indigenous way of life. Knowing that nature-based interventions effectively improve mental health outcomes, this review collated evidence on the application of caring for country in improving social and emotional well-being (SEWB) of Indigenous peoples in Australia and New Zealand. Three studies from Australia and one from New Zealand, explored the role of country or whenua (land) in the lives of Indigenous people. Participation in caring-for country activities was associated with lower levels of psychological distress and strengthened guardianship relationship with country, which positively affected SEWB. This systematic review offers preliminary evidence on the role of caring for country activities in improving the SEWB of Indigenous peoples and highlights the need for strengths-based approaches to improve the SEWB of Indigenous peoples. Tree planting has long played a major role in the New Zealand Government’s approach to climate mitigation and is increasingly understood as important for climate adaptation. However, large-scale tree planting in Aotearoa New Zealand has been dominated by exotic species. Although there is growing public and expert support for using native species for forest revegetation in farm landscapes, there are two key barriers. First, the lack of ecological and economic data on native species performance in different environmental conditions. Second, policy and market-related mechanisms associated with carbon sequestration, such as the New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme, favor the continuing use of exotic tree species, especially Pinus radiata, over native species. Consequently, there are strong incentives for exotic forests and insufficient financial support for natives, even when native forest re-establishment is often the preference of landowners, Indigenous peoples, and local communities. The AUT Living Laboratories Program is a long-term, transdisciplinary, experimental restoration research program aimed at addressing scientific, social, and economic knowledge gaps for native revegetation as a Nature-based Solution (NbS) on farmland soils. Here, we present the project design and establishment information from the three experimental restoration sites, which vary in native species composition, planting configuration, and environmental and socio-cultural context. Each site involves partnerships with Indigenous communities, specifically Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, Ngāti Manuhiri, and Ngāti Pāoa, to value and embed mātauranga Māori as Indigenous knowledge. Monitoring carbon sequestration along with changes in ecological functions and outcomes, including native biodiversity, will be critical to ensure that large-scale tree-planting aligns with the government’s strategies for climate change, native biodiversity, and economic prosperity.

We employ the methods of statistical mechanics to obtain closures for the balance equations of momentum and fluctuation kinetic energy that govern the ballistic motion of grains rebounding at a rigid, bumpy bed that are driven by turbulent or non-turbulent shearing fluids, in the absence of mid-trajectory collisions and fluid velocity fluctuations. We obtain semi-analytical solutions for steady and fully developed saltation over horizontal beds for the vertical profiles of particle concentration and stresses and fluid and particle velocities. These compare favourably with measurements in discrete-element numerical simulations in the wide range of conditions of Earth and other planetary environments. The predictions of the particle horizontal mass flux and its scaling with the amount of particles in the system, the properties of the carrier fluid and the intensity of the shearing also agree with numerical simulations and wind-tunnel experiments. Platelets play crucial roles in the development and progression of coronary artery disease (CAD). The triggering receptor expressed in myeloid cells-like transcript-1 (TLT-1) is stored in platelet α granules, and activated platelets release a soluble fragment (sTLT-1). We set out to better characterize the constituent amino acids of sTLT-1 and to evaluate sTLT-1 for use as a biomarker in patients with stable CAD. We evaluated sTLT-1 release using immunoprecipitation and mass spectrometry and employed statistical methods to retrospectively correlate sTLT-1 concentrations, utilizing ELISA in plasma samples from 1510 patients with documented stable CAD. We identified TLT-1 residues to 133 in platelet releasates. ADAM17 cuts TLT-1, suggesting that S136 is the C-terminal amino acid in sTLT-1. Our results revealed that for CAD patients, sTLT-1 levels did not differ significantly according to primary outcomes of death or major cardiac event; however, patients with left ventricular (LV) dysfunction had significantly lower plasma sTLT-1 levels as compared to those with normal LV function (981.62 ± 1141 pg/mL vs. 1247.48 ± 1589 pg/mL; p = 0.003). When patients were stratified based on sTLT-1 peak frequency distribution (544 pg/mL), a significant association with congestive heart failure was identified (OR = 2.94; 1.040–8.282; p = 0.042), which could be explained by LV dysfunction.

Although multiple efforts have been initiated to increase students' science proficiency scores, most of the schools in the United States do not reach the expected student academic performance. This study addresses the impact of a one-week summer scientific learning experience on students that worked with experimental procedures and students that did not. We describe and evaluate these two different interventions to explore what components influence high school students' perception of their scientific competence, performance, and recognition, using science identity as an analytical lens. Science identity score was increased at the end of both interventions. Interestingly, science identity change index was higher for the group that did not work with experimental procedures. Although this group did not perform any hands-on experiments, they report, through reflexive diaries and interviews that working with CRISPR-Cas9 models, being in a research laboratory, and seeing the instrumentation made them feel like scientists. Regarding science competence, both groups report exponential learning gains, although the group that performed the experiments reports more difficulties. Both groups report that mentorship was key in their competence and performance development. These findings suggest that our one-week scientific learning programs influence participants' perception of scientific competence and performance and create an opportunity to develop further studies on short scientific learning experiences using models and active learning activities.

Abstract Background Legionella spp. are ubiquitous freshwater bacteria responsible for rare but potentially severe cases of Legionnaires’ disease (LD). Legionella sainthelensi is a non-pneumophila Legionella species that was first isolated in 1980 from water near Mt. St-Helens (USA). Although rare cases of LD caused by L. sainthelensi have been reported, very little data is available on this pathogen. Case presentation We describe the first documented case of severe bilateral pleuropneumonia caused by L. sainthelensi. The patient was a 35-year-old woman with Sharp’s syndrome treated with long-term hydroxychloroquine and corticosteroids who was hospitalized for an infectious illness in a university hospital in Reunion Island (France). The patient’s clinical presentation was complicated at first (bilateral pneumonia, multiloculated pleural effusion, then bronchopleural fistula) but her clinical condition eventually improved with the reintroduction of macrolides (spiramycin) in intensive care unit. Etiological diagnosis was confirmed by PCR syndromic assay and culture on bronchoalveolar lavage. Conclusions To date, only 14 documented cases of L. sainthelensi infection have been described worldwide. This pathogen is difficult to identify because it is not or poorly detected by urinary antigen and molecular methods (like PCR syndromic assays that primarily target L. pneumophila and that have only recently been deployed in microbiology laboratories). Pneumonia caused by L. sainthelensi is likely underdiagnosed as a result. Clinicians should consider the possibility of non-pneumophila Legionella infection in patients with a compatible clinical presentation when microbiological diagnostic tools targeted L. pneumophila tested negative.

Receptors are important pharmacological targets on cells. The Triggering Receptor Expressed on Myeloid Cells (TREM) – Like Transcript – 1 is an abundant, yet little understood, platelet receptor. It is a single Ig domain containing receptor isolated in the α-granules of resting platelets and brought to the platelet surface upon activation. On platelets, the integrin αIIbβ3 is the major receptor having roughly 80,000 copies. αIIbβ3 is a heterodimeric multidomain structure that mediates platelet aggregation through its interaction with the plasma protein fibrinogen. Anti-platelet drugs have successfully targeted αIIbβ3 to control thrombosis. Like αIIbβ3, TLT-1 also binds fibrinogen, making its role in platelet function somewhat obscure. In this review, we highlight the known structural features of TLT-1 and present the challenges of understanding TLT-1 function. In our analysis of the dynamics of the platelet surface after activation we propose a model in which TLT-1 supports αIIbβ3 function as a mechanoreceptor that may direct platelets toward immune function.

Two projects within the Euratom Research and Training Programmes 2014–2018 and 2019–2020 are focused on the innovation and qualification of novel nuclear fuels for conversion from highly-enriched uranium to low-enriched uranium (LEU) and for securing the supply chain of EU research reactors into the future. The LEU-FOREvER project is drawing to a close and has made significant progress in developing and demonstrating the uranium-molybdenum fuel system, demonstrating the viability of a high-density uranium-silicide fuel for EU high-performance research reactors (BR2, RHF, FRM-II, JHR). This project has significantly increased the fabrication know-how and fuel performance understanding of the uranium-molybdenum and high-density uranium-silicide dispersion fuel systems. Further, a new, innovative and increased performance design for the LVR-15 research reactor fuel assembly has been engineered and a demonstration is planned in 2022. In the EU-QUALIFY project, which began in 2020, the planning of four demonstration irradiation tests has been nearly completed and fabrication development of the various fuel systems is ongoing, including the establishment of an EU monolithic uranium-molybdenum fabrication capability. It is expected that the results of this project will begin or complete the data gathering necessary for generic fuel qualification of the LEU uranium-molybdenum dispersion and monolithic fuel systems, and the LEU high-density uranium-silicide fuel system.

This article examines the echoes between Andrew Wyeth's painting and Carrie Mae Weems's photograph A Distant View in The Louisiana Project, and how the photograph disrupts and distances itself from the original, opening new paths for interpretation. Weems's appropriation inscribes the artist and her work in a long tradition among African American artists, "worrying the line" of the artwork from which she borrows. Through a series of indirections, Weems creates a multi-folded image initiating a rich meditation about history, art history, and the privileges of representation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
