Introduction: The shortage of medical professionals is becoming a nearly unsurmountable burden worldwide. Increasing uncertainties in the external environment require enhanced capacity for predicting future outcomes from the young adult population of medical students. Objectives: To find the level of resilience, the domains of psychological well-being and the symptoms of distress; and to identify associations between them in a cohort of medical students. Methods: Data were collected in the 2022-23 academic year among Hungarian and English medical students at Semmelweis University. An online questionnaire was circulated via the official academic administration system (Neptun) with the incentive to provide personal results with available resources for those who requested it. Besides age and gender, we applied the short form of the Nicholson McBride Resilience Questionnaire (NMRQ), Ryff's Psychological Well-being Scales (PWB), and the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS). Additional to descriptive statistics, univariate analyses as well as multiple regression analyses (SPSS v.24) were used. (Ethics permission No: BM/5326-2/2023). Results: Altogether 318 students (132 Hungarians) filled the questionnaire, and 251 students requested personal answers. 114 males participated with a mean age slightly higher than that of females (24 (SD:4) ys vs 23 (SD:3) ys). Hungarians (H) demonstrated lower resilience (Mdn:37, IQR:32, 42) then international (I) students (Mdn: 41, IQR: 36, 47), U=15287, p<0.001. Both H and I students showed similar patterns on PWB, scoring highest on personal growth, purpose in life and positive relations with others; while reaching lowest scores on environmental mastery, and lower scores on autonomy and self-acceptance. However, they demonstrated differences in each of the domains (see table). Higher prevalence of symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress were found in I students. Multiple regression analyses resulted in statistically significant models for both H (F(11, 121)=19.6; p<0.001; R2=0.641) and I students (F(12, 143)=8.98; p<0.001; R2=0.430) indicating that EM (t=4.7; p<0.001), PL (t=--3.2; p=0.002), SA (t=4.2; p<0.001), A (t=2.9; p=0.005), and anxiety (t-4.06; p<0.001) significantly predicted the strength of resilience in H, while autonomy (t=4.9; p<0.001) proved to be significant predictor in case of I students. Conclusions: These single-centre results need to be further clarified on national and international level to stimulate interventions for strengthening resilience through establishing a caring network by universities for the fragile population of medical students. Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) is a frequently used method in the treatment of coronary artery disease. Coronary stenosis, endothelial injury, and ischemia-reperfusion caused by the balloon inflation and deflation during this procedure can cause several changes in blood flow. In our study 19 patients (mean age: 58 ± 9 years) undergoing PTCA were examined. For the laboratory measurements several blood samples were taken from the femoral vein and the coronary sinus before and 30 minutes after PTCA, and from the cubital vein 1, 2, 5 days and 1, 6 months after PTCA. Among hemorheologic parameters hematocrit, plasma fibrinogen level, plasma and whole blood viscosities were measured and corrected blood viscosity value was calculated. To characterize the oxidative stress, samples were analyzed for thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) of blood as a marker of lipidperoxidation and changes in the antioxidant system were investigated by measuring the activity of superoxide dismutase, catalase and the concentration of glutathione; superoxide generating capacity of isolated leukocytes and platelet aggregation were examined as markers of cellular activation. Plasma fibrinogen concentration increased markedly during the first and second day after PTCA (p < 0.001), which was accompanied by the elevation of plasma viscosity (p < 0.05). Plasma fibrinogen returned to the baseline at the one-month check-up visit, but there was a significant increase in its concentration by the end of the sixth month follow-up. Apparent whole blood viscosity at 90 s[sup -1] showed gradually increasing values up to the one- and six-month check-up visits (p < 0.01), which can partially be explained by the elevation of hematocrit. Corrected blood viscosity was significantly elevated on the fifth day already (p < 0.01), and one month later also. The authors had performed an epizootological observation on occurrence of chronic respiratory disease of foals in 2 herds of about 100 mares in each over the years 1976-86. In 1986 virological, bacteriological and mycoplasma examinations were performed. The studs were positive for antibodies against Myxovirus influenzae A equi 1 and 2 types, rotavirus, herpesvirus 2 and viral arteritis agent, but no virus could be isolated from 30 samples of different origin. The disease of foals was associated with their mycoplasma infection and lower concentration of immunoglobulins in blood serum of the foals. The animals were less frequently infected with Streptococcus equisimilis and Corynebacterium equi. Zusammenfassung Respiratorische Krankheit der Pferde begleitet durch Infektion mit Mycoplasmen Die Autoren führten von 1976-1986 epizootologische Untersuchungen zum Vorkommen der Chronischen respiratorischen Krankheit der Fohlen in 2 Herden mit über 100 Stuten durch. Im Jahre 1986 wurden die bakteriologischen, virologischen und die Untersuchungen auf Mycoplasmen durch-geführt. Die Stuten waren positiv in Hinsicht auf das Vorkommen von Antikörpern gegen den Myxovirus influenzae A Typ equi 1 and equi 2, Rotavirus, Herpesvirus 2 und den Erreger der Pferdestaupe. Trotzdem konnte aus 30 Proben verschiedener Herkunft kein Virus isoliert werden. Die Erkrankung der Fohlen war verbunden mit ihrer Mycoplasmen-Infektion und einer geringeren Konzentration von Antikörpern im Blutserum der Fohlen. The authors discovered non-specific reaction between sera collected in a herd being negative serologically, culturally and histologically for M. hyopneumoniae infection over a period 1981-1985 and M. hyopneumoniae antigen in indirect haemagglutination test. In 1985 the animals were vaccinated with SUVAC vaccine against swine fever. It was demonstrated by the agar-gel immunodiffusion test and immunoelectrophoretic examination using antisera against whole horse serum, horse IgG and IgT proteins that SUVAC vaccine contained horse serum proteins having induced antibodies in swine sera reacting with M. hyopneumoniae antigen which was prepared in medium with horse serum. Preadsorption of swine sera with horse serum eliminated the non-specific reaction of M. hyopneumoniae antigen. Zusammenfassung Vorkommen nicht-spezifischer Reaktionen in der Diagnose von M. hyopneumoniae-Infektion der Schweine Die Autoren beobachteten eine nicht-spezifische Reaktion zwischen Seren, die in einer Herde gewonnen wurden, die sowohl in serologischer, kultureller und histologischer Sicht im Zeitraum von 1981-1985 von M. hyopneumoniae, als auch im indirekten Haemagglutinationstest mit M. hyopneumoniae-Antigen frei war. 1985 wurden die Tiere mit SUVAC-Vakzine gegen die Schweinepest geimpft. Es wurde mit Hilfe des Immundiffusionstestes und der immunelektroforetischen Untersuchung unter Anwendung von Anti-Pferde-Vollserum, Pferde-IgG und IgT-Proteinen gezeigt, daß SUVAC, welches Pferdeserumproteine enthält, Antikörper im Schweineserum induziert, die mit M. hyopneumoniae-Antigen reagierten, welches im Medium mit Pferdeserum vorbereitet worden war. Die Präadsorption der Schweineseren mit Pferdeserum eliminierte die nicht-spezifische Reaktion des M. hyopneumoniae-Antigens. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
