Abstract

Tutkielma käsittelee kolmannen ja neljännen asteen yhtälöiden ratkaisukaavoja sekä polynomien kongruenssia. Kolmannen ja neljännen asteen yhtälöille voidaan johtaa ratkaisumetodit, joiden avulla löydetään kolmannen ja neljännen asteen yhtälöiden ratkaisut. Cardanon metodilla voidaan ratkaista kolmannen asteen reaalilukukertoimisia polynomiyhtälöitä. Metodin pitkähkö teoreettinen johtaminen voidaan tiivistää muutamaan pääkohtaan, joissa yhtälön kertoimia käyttäen määritetään arvoja joita käytetään yhtälön ratkaisujen saamiseksi. Ferrarin metodilla voidaan ratkaista neljännen asteen reaalilukukertoimisia yhtälöitä. Ferrarin metodi perustuu siihen, että neljännen asteen yhtälö saadaan sopivien sijoitusten avulla palautumaan toisen ja kolmannen asteen yhtälöiksi. Toisen asteen yhtälön ratkaisukaava on tuttu jo lukiotason matematiikasta ja kolmannen asteen yhtälön ratkaisut saadaan Cardanon metodia käyttämällä. Polynomirenkaan polynomien kongruenssi määritellään siten, että polynomirenkaan polynomit f(x) ja g(x) ovat kongruentteja keskenään modulo p(x), mikäli polynomi p(x) on tekijänä polynomien f(x) ja g(x) erotuksessa. Itse asiassa voidaan osoittaa, että polynomit f(x) ja g(x) ovat kongruentteja keskenään modulo p(x) jos ja vain jos niiden jakojäännös polynomilla p(x) jakamisen jälkeen on sama. Polynomien kongruenssi voidaan osoittaa ekvivalenssirelaatioksi polynomirenkaassa K[x]. Polynomien kongruenssiin perustuen voidaan määritellä polynomirenkaan K[x] polynomien määräämien ekvivalenssiluokkien modulo p(x) joukko. Kaikki polynomirenkaan K[x] polynomit kuuluvat aina johonkin ekvivalenssiluokkaan modulo p(x). Se, mihin ekvivalenssiluokkaan jokin mielivaltainen polynomirenkaan K[x] polynomi kuuluu, selviää jakamalla tutkittava polynomi polynomilla p(x). Saatu jakojäännös määrää aina sen ekvivalenssiluokan, johon tutkittava polynomi kuuluu. Ekvivalenssiluokkien joukko voidaan osoittaa kommutatiiviseksi renkaaksi. Tällöin ekvivalenssiluokkien joukon on oltava summaoperaation suhteen Abelin ryhmä, tulo-operaation suhteen puoliryhmä, jossa on ykkösalkio ja osittelulakien tulee olla voimassa. Lisäksi renkaan tulee olla kommutatiivinen tulo-operaation suhteen. Lisäksi voidaan osoittaa, että kyseessä oleva kommutatiivinen rengas sisältää kunnan K. Tämän todistamiseksi osoitetaan, että kommutatiivinen rengas sisältää alirenkaan, joka muodostuu kommutatiivisen renkaan niistä alkioista, jotka ovat vakiopolynomien määräämiä ekvivalenssiluokkia. Lisäksi osoitetaan, että saatu alirengas on isomorfinen kunnan K kanssa. Ekvivalenssiluokkien joukko on siis kommutatiivinen rengas, joka sisältää kunnan K. Itse asiassa voidaan osoittaa, että ekvivalenssiluokkien joukko on kunta, kun polynomi p(x) on jaoton. Tarkemmin sanottuna, ekvivalenssiluokkien joukko on kunta jos ja vain jos polynomi p(x) on jaoton. Polynomikongruenssiin perustuen on saatu määriteltyä ekvivalenssiluokkien modulo p(x) joukko, joka on kunta ja jossa polynomi p(x) on jaoton. Saatu kunta sisältää kunnan K, kun käytetyt polynomit ovat polynomirenkaasta K[x]. Voidaan osoittaa, että polynomirenkaan K[x] jaoton polynomi p(x) voidaan jakaa tekijöihin ekvivalenssiluokkien modulo p(x) muodostamassa polynomirenkaassa.

Abstract

This overview describes the principles of the 4th edition of the European Code against Cancer and provides an introduction to the 12 recommendations to reduce cancer risk. Among the 504.6 million inhabitants of the member states of the European Union (EU28), there are annually 2.64 million new cancer cases and 1.28 million deaths from cancer. It is estimated that this cancer burden could be reduced by up to one half if scientific knowledge on causes of cancer could be translated into successful prevention. The Code is a preventive tool aimed to reduce the cancer burden by informing people how to avoid or reduce carcinogenic exposures, adopt behaviours to reduce the cancer risk, or to participate in organised intervention programmes. The Code should also form a base to guide national health policies in cancer prevention. The 12 recommendations are: not smoking or using other tobacco products; avoiding second-hand smoke; being a healthy body weight; encouraging physical activity; having a healthy diet; limiting alcohol consumption, with not drinking alcohol being better for cancer prevention; avoiding too much exposure to ultraviolet radiation; avoiding cancer-causing agents at the workplace; reducing exposure to high levels of radon; encouraging breastfeeding; limiting the use of hormone replacement therapy; participating in organised vaccination programmes against hepatitis B for newborns and human papillomavirus for girls; and participating in organised screening programmes for bowel cancer, breast cancer, and cervical cancer.

Abstract

Background: Recently, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) Programme for the Evaluation of Carcinogenic Risks to Humans has been criticized for several of its evaluations, and also for the approach used to perform these evaluations. Some critics have claimed that failures of IARC Working Groups to recognize study weaknesses and biases of Working Group members have led to inappropriate classification of a number of agents as carcinogenic to humans. oBjectives: The authors of this Commentary are scientists from various disciplines relevant to the identification and hazard evaluation of human carcinogens. We examined criticisms of the IARC classification process to determine the validity of these concerns. Here, we present the results of that examination, review the history of IARC evaluations, and describe how the IARC evaluations are performed. discussion: We concluded that these recent criticisms are unconvincing. The procedures employed by IARC to assemble Working Groups of scientists from the various disciplines and the techniques followed to review the literature and perform hazard assessment of various agents provide a balanced evaluation and an appropriate indication of the weight of the evidence. Some disagreement by individual scientists to some evaluations is not evidence of process failure. The review process has been modified over time and will undoubtedly be altered in the future to improve the process. Any process can in theory be improved, and we would support continued review and improvement of the IARC processes. This does not mean, however, that the current procedures are flawed. conclusions: The IARC Monographs have made, and continue to make, major contributions to the scientific underpinning for societal actions to improve the public’s health.

Abstract

Serum levels of p53 protein were examined in 23 cases of lung cancer (many with potential asbestos exposure), 23 unexposed matched hospital control subjects, 58 unmatched general population control subjects, and 4 people with nonmalignant lung disease using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and Western immunoblotting. Average levels of serum p53 in the lung cancer patients (0.55 ng/mL) were higher than in the cases of nonmalignant lung disease (0.42 ng/mL) or in the matched (0.32 ng/mL) or unmatched (0.31 ng/mL) control subjects, but the differences were not statistically significant. However, three of the cases of lung cancer (13%) were found to have serum p53 levels much greater than those of the control subjects (> 2 SD above the mean) and to have confirmatory positive Western blots for p53. The tumors from these subjects demonstrated increased levels of p53 in the tissue by immunohistochemistry and/or the presence of mutations in the p53 gene. These results suggest that p53 protein can be detected in serum in a portion of lung cancer cases with p53 alterations in the tumor tissue.
