Few studies explore the components of sexual satisfaction as specified by college students. This cross-sectional study examined sexual satisfaction at the event level for undergraduate students (n = 1,090), focusing on differences between males/females. Survey results revealed for both males and females, being comfortable with a partner, experiencing orgasm, and having a partner "with skills" predicted sexual satisfaction. Satisfied males reported feeling safe with their partners, spent time touching/kissing, and had "romantic" partners. Satisfied females had partners with previous sexual experience, whom they desired, and vice-versa. These findings can inform comprehensive sexuality education efforts to incorporate the teaching of satisfaction into sexual health.

Background: Skin cancer, the most common cancer in the United States, accounts for over one million cases per year. Risk can be mediated by limiting UV radiation exposure, yet efforts to increase adoption of protective measures have met with limited success. Purpose: This study compares the results of surveys conducted in 1990 and 2007 assessing the knowledge, attitudes and behaviors of college students regarding intentional sun exposure. Methods: The 44-item "Sun and Skin Inventory" was administered to students enrolled in personal health classes during the fall semesters in 1990 and 2007. Results: Mean knowledge scores were no different in 2007 than 1990 and knowledge scores were not related to sunbathing frequency in either survey. Risk perception was negatively related to sunbathing frequency and students reporting greater perceived risk had more positive attitudes toward protective behaviors. Overall, sunbathing behavior was unchanged over 17 years, but students did report more frequent sunscreen use in the latter survey. Discussion: Despite educational efforts regarding risks related to intentional UV exposure, high risk behavior continues among adults. Translation to Health Education Practice: Comprehensive prevention initiatives that include education as well as policy and environmental strategies integrated across state, regional and local levels need to be implemented. Using a sample of 692 freshmen at a southeastern university, this study examined caloric restriction among students prior to planned alcohol consumption. Participants were surveyed for self-reported alcohol consumption, binge drinking, and caloric intake habits prior to drinking episodes. Results indicated that 99 of 695 (14%) of first year students reported restricting calories prior to drinking, with 6% reporting this behavior to avoid weight gain and 10% to enhance alcohols effects; no significant differences were found between males and females. Based on the study findings, practical campus-based and student-centered education and prevention strategies are presented to explore solutions to reduce drunkorexia. Effective evidence-based behavior change brief interventions such as Motivational Interviewing and the Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (BASICS) program are presented and discussed. This study examines college women's intention to receive the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccine and their perceived barriers to being vaccinated. The study reports findings from an online questionnaire completed by 856 undergraduate women enrolled in a required personal health course at a large (27,000 plus) southeastern university. The majority of the respondents (78.6%) indicated that they would get the vaccine; however, only 60.7% of the respondents who self-identified as not yet sexually active reported that they plan to be vaccinated. Side effects, costs and lack of knowledge about the vaccine were most often indicated as barriers to receiving the vaccine. Education about HPV and the vaccine is needed to address the perceived barriers to vaccination. (Contains 3 tables.)

The transition from high school to college offers adolescents more freedom that may result in increased risky sexual behaviors. This exploratory study examines sexual behaviors of freshmen. Half of participants completed a questionnaire during the first week of college and the other half during the last week of their freshmen year. Significant differences in sexual behaviors between the semesters and subgroups of students who may be more likely to engage in high risk behaviors are identified. The results suggest that freshmen need more effective targeted educational programming about the importance of condom use in preventing sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and pregnancy.

The Sleep Quality Index (SQI) and the Centers for Disease Control's National College Health Risk Survey (NCHRS) were administered to 859 undergraduates at a large southeastern university. Results indicated that 76.6% reported occasional sleep problems and 11.8 % experienced poor sleep quality. Among the problems reported, "general morning tiredness" (82%) and "insomnia" (28%) were the most common. Certain health risk behaviors appear to be associated with poor sleep quality including fighting, suicide ideation, smoking, and alcohol use. Implications and limitations of the study are identified. Analysis of data from 1394 undergraduates at a large southeastern university were used to assess the degree to which the stereotype that "men are dogs" (sexually-focused cheaters) is justified. Results suggest that this stereotype is unjustified since the majority of males: (1) define behaviors from kissing to anal sex as cheating; (2) predict that they will not cheat on their partners; and (3) report never having cheated on a partner. However, compared to those of the women, the frequencies with which men report cheating are high. Approximately one-in-five males in a "monogamous" relationship reported having had oral sex and/or vaginal intercourse with someone else (22.2% and 19.7% respectively) and withheld this information from their partners (thus leaving the partners vulnerable to STD/HIV infection). Implications and limitations of the study are identified.

Larger class sizes are often the solution to the greater enrollments and fewer resources that many colleges and universities face today. These large classes present special challenges to courses that were typically and most effectively taught in small, interactive and open settings. A "Classroom Response System" (CRS), an instructional tool that promotes student interaction by collecting, tabulating and displaying student responses to questions, can address this challenge. A survey of student attitudes in a large Sexual Health course indicate that students enjoy using a CRS and think it contributes positively to their learning experience. (Contains 1 table.)

This survey explored perceptions of North Carolina elementary and mi teachers regarding roles and responsibilities in assisting COAs, their need for additional training their perceptions of school-based resources for helping COAs. Background: The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT-C) is a commonly used scale to screen for hazardous alcohol use in various settings, including primary and emergency care settings. In such settings, brevity of effective screening tools is needed; therefore, single items have been developed and tested for detecting at-risk alcohol use behaviors. Purpose: This study replicates previous work validating the ability of a non-quantity-based single item assessing drunkenness to effectively identify signs of hazardous alcohol use. Methods: During fall 2013, alcohol use data were collected from 781 self-reported current drinkers. Concurrent validity of a drunkenness item to detect hazardous drinking behaviors was assessed against gender-based AUDIT-C thresholds. Convergent validity of the drunkenness item was assessed against biologic BrAC samples. Results: The single drunkenness item accounted for 0.856 of the area-under-the-received operating characteristics (ROC) curve for hazardous alcohol use (p < 0.001). Using a specific cut-off of 1, the drunkenness item was 99.8% sensitive in detecting hazardous drinking behavior and was 93.5% specific in identifying non-hazardous drinking behaviors. Conclusion: In a new sample, initial psychometric findings of the single drunkenness item to accurately detect hazardous alcohol use were replicated, providing additional support for the utility of this item.
