Cholanaikkans are a diminishing tribe of India. With a population of less than 200 members, this tribe living in the reserved forests about 80 km from Kozhikode, it is one of the most isolated tribes. A programme of the Government of Kerala brings some of them to Kozhikode once a year. We studied various aspects of the tribe during such a visit in 2016. We report their science and technology.

We attempt to provide a comprehensive model of evolution of science across millennia taking into account the contributions of other intellectual traditions, cultural value system and increasing in sophistication of humans in their study of nature. We also briefly discuss the role of technology and its interplay in the evolution of science. We identify five primary approaches to the study of nature, namely ad hoc formulations, religious approach, pragmatic approach, axiomatic approach and the logic based approach. Each of these approaches have had their prime periods and have contributed significantly to human understanding of nature and have also overlapped within a society. Each approach has had a central role over human evolution at some stage. We surmise that the currently dominant axiomatic method will reach its limits due to complexity of the system and may never be fully formalised. We suggest that the future progress of science will more be a logic based approach where experimentation and simulations rather than axiomatic firmness will be used to test our understanding of nature., Comment: 18 pages, 2 figures

The central nervous system and particularly the brain was designed to control the life cycle of a living being. With increasing size and sophistication, in mammals, the brain became capable of exercising significant control over life. In Homo Sapiens the brain became significantly powerful and capable of comprehension beyond survival needs with visualisation, formal thought and long term memory. Here we trace the rise of the powers of the brains of the Homo Sapiens and its capability of three comprehending the three spatial dimensions as well as time. By tracing the evolution of technology over the last millennium and particularly the late arrival of astronomy to discuss the evolution of the formal thinking process in humans. We investigate the anomalies in the Earth - Moon system using ancient eclipse data. We identify nine groups of anomalous eclipses between 400 and 1800 AD recorded in parts of India that should have completely missed the subcontinent as per NASA simulations (Espenak and Meeus, 2011). We show that the typical correction to the lunar location required to reconcile the anomalous eclipses is relatively small and consistent with the fluctuations in the length of day that are observed in recent periods. We then investigate the change in Earth's moment of inertia due to differential acceleration of land and water that can account for this discrepancy. We show that 80 percent of these discrepancies occur when the Moon is at declinations greater than 10 deg and closer to its major standstill of 28 deg while it spends 46 percent of the time in this region. We simulate the differential interaction of the Moon's gravity with landmass and water using finite element method to account for landmass and water mass. We show that the results of eclipse error are consistent with the estimate of a small differential acceleration when the Moon is over land at high latitudes. However, we encounter some examples where the results from simulations studies cannot explain the phenomena. Hence we propose that dT corrections have to be coupled with some other mechanism possibly a small vertical oscillation in the Moon's rotational plane with a period of the order of a few hundred years to achieve the required adjustment in the Eclipse maps., Comment: 11 pages, 2 tables, 15 figures in the text and 2 in appendix

The Gond community is considered to be one of the most ancient tribes of India with a continuing history of several thousand years. They are also known for their largely isolated history which they have retained through the millennia. Several of their intellectual traditions therefore are a record of parallel aspects of human intellectual growth, and still preserve their original flavour and have not been homogenised by the later traditions of India. In view of this, the Gonds provide a special window to the different currents that constitute contemporary India. In the present study, we summarise their mythology, genetics and script. We then investigate their astronomical traditions and try to understand this community through a survey of 15 Gond villages spread over Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. We show that they have a distinctly different view of the sky from the conventional astronomical ideas encountered elsewhere in India, which is both interesting and informative. The Indus script is one of the major undeciphered scripts of the ancient world. The small size of the corpus, the absence of bilingual texts, and the lack of definite knowledge of the underlying language has frustrated efforts at decipherment since the discovery of the remains of the Indus civilisation. Recently, some researchers have questioned the premise that the Indus script encodes spoken language. Building on previous statistical approaches, we apply the tools of statistical language processing, specifically $n$-gram Markov chains, to analyse the Indus script for syntax. Our main results are that the script has well-defined signs which begin and end texts, that there is directionality and strong correlations in the sign order, and that there are groups of signs which appear to have identical syntactic function. All these require no {\it a priori} suppositions regarding the syntactic or semantic content of the signs, but follow directly from the statistical analysis. Using information theoretic measures, we find the information in the script to be intermediate between that of a completely random and a completely fixed ordering of signs. Our study reveals that the Indus script is a structured sign system showing features of a formal language, but, at present, cannot conclusively establish that it encodes {\it natural} language. Our $n$-gram Markov model is useful for predicting signs which are missing or illegible in a corpus of Indus texts. This work forms the basis for the development of a stochastic grammar which can be used to explore the syntax of the Indus script in greater detail.

We assume that if the sun has a companion, it has a period of 27 Myr corresponding to the periodicity seen in cometary impacts on earth. Based on this assumption, it is seen that the inner Lagrengian point of the interaction between the Sun and its companion is in the Oort cloud. From this we calculate the mass -- distance relation for the companion. We then compute the expected apparent magnitude (visible and J band) for the companion using the models of Burrows (1993). We then compare this with the catalogue completeness of optical and infrared catalogues to show that the sun cannot have a companion of mass greater than 44 M_jup (0.042 M_sun), Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, Accepted 10 Feb 2005 for Bull. Recent studies have shown that the local environment of the Sun is a complex one with the presence of several supernova shock bubbles and interstellar clouds. Even within this environment, the Sun is moving with a velocity of about 15 km/s toward the interior of the galaxy. We examine the changes in the local ISM environment experienced by the Sun in the past and then discuss the interaction of the Sun with these different environments. Lastly, we inquire how this must have changed the cosmic ray environment of the earth since this remains one of the few methods to test the changes in the local ISM environment over astronomical time scales. %

IONS (ANURADHA), the experimental payload designed specifically to determine the ionization states, flux, composition, energy spectra and arrival directions of low energy (10 to 100 MeV/amu) anomalous cosmic ray ions of helium to iron in near-Earth space, had a highly successful flight and operation Spacelab-3 mission. The experiment combines the accuracy of a highly sensitive CR-39 nuclear track detector with active components included in the payload to achieve the experimental objectives. Post-flight analysis of detector calibration pieces placed within the payload indicated no measurable changes in detector response due to its exposure in spacelab environment. Nuclear tracks produced by alpha-particles, oxygen group and Fe ions in low energy anomalous cosmic rays were identified. It is calculated that the main detector has recorded high quality events of about 10,000 alpha-particles and similar number of oxygen group and heavier ions of low energy cosmic rays.

The possible origin of the anomalous cosmic rays (ACR) are studied in terms of stellar wind injection from O type stars and their acceleration in shock fronts of SNR's. It is assumed that a fraction of heavy ions will encounter interstellar shock fronts of SNR's and these are accelerated to about 5 to 100 MeV/N and give rise to ACR's. Typically these ions would travel a distance of the order of a few 1000 pc. Therefore it is estimated that O type stars in a volume of radius of a few Kpc around the solar system are contributing to the intensity of ACR in the local ISM. From observational data, the intensity of ACR in the local ISM is estimated. It is suggested that these ACR ions enter the solar system along the solar dipole field lines connected to the interplanetary magnetic field lines.

Differential spectra of even charged nuclei between Si and Fe in the August 4, 1972 event were made in the energy region of 10 to 40 MeV/n-1 using rocket borne plastic detectors. The resulting relative abundances of elements and low energy enhancements are obtained and compared with spectroscopically determined photospheric abundances. The implications of the relative abundances on the acceleration mechanisms is discussed.
