Foi realizado inventário das aves no campus Santa Helena da Universidade Tecnológica Federal do Paraná (UTFPR-SH) por meio da metodologia de listas de 10 espécies para verificar, juntamente com os demais inventários de aves em campi universitários do Paraná, se a área de cada campus influenciaria na riqueza total de espécies registradas. Os ambientes da UTFPR, que possui 11 ha, abarcam áreas antropizadas, capinzais, fragmento florestal em estádio intermediário de sucessão (2,4 ha) e trecho de vegetação reflorestada que corresponde à faixa de proteção do Lago de Itaipu. Após 12 campanhas, foram acumuladas 48 listas, sendo registradas 84 e estimadas 95 espécies. Ao verificar a riqueza de espécies de mais cinco campi universitários paranaenses, verificou-se que a área do campus influenciou positiva porém não significativamente o número de espécies registradas em cada localidade. Desse modo, sugere-se que, no contexto de inventários, a diversidade-alfa será maior em localidades maiores, onde tenham sido amostrados mais ambientes.

We measured bird diversity over an 800 m range in altitude to test the factors that influence changes in diversity, in the Atlantic Forest in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil. We counted forest birds in nine 100 m transects comprising three-point counts, the center of each separated by 200 m. A total of 108 species were found, and diversity was distributed among sampling points and altitude formed a trough-shaped relationship of number of species by area, altitude, and, most strongly, slope. In Principal Coordinate Analysis we found that grouping points by similarity formed three distinct units that were united by altitude: the lowest at near sea level, 100–400 m, and 500–800 m. Thus, we demonstrate that, in the Atlantic Forest, turnover of species with altitude occurs, but unlike higher, often steeper, tropical gradients in Andean forests, where vegetation more clearly changes with elevation, species turnover is more likely to be associated with variables other than changes in vegetation, and which are often not included in studies of the elevation gradient in species richness. The mid-domain effect did not explain altitudinal gradient in diversity, while a quadratic relationship with altitude did, suggesting that reduced abundance and diversity are associated with steeper slopes.

A Área de Relevante Interesse Ecológico Santa Helena (ARIE-SH) é uma unidade de conservação localizada no oeste paranaense, onde predominava a formação de Floresta Estacional Semidecidual. A ARIE-SH, com 1.480 ha, possui a peculiaridade de ter sofrido corte raso, sendo reflorestada com espécies nativas e exóticas, incluindo frutíferas, a partir da década de 1980, quando do enchimento do Lago de Itaipu. Desde então, a ARIE-SH tem sido utilizada para o desenvolvimento de projetos de extensão e pesquisa. O objetivo deste estudo foi realizar o levantamento bibliográfico das atividades e ações nela desenvolvidas e publicadas, bem como apresentar dados preliminares de projetos ainda em desenvolvimento e não publicados conduzidos no local. Foram encontrados 13 estudos já produzidos na ARIE-SH entre 1987 e 2019, englobando os temas educação ambiental, fauna, flora, percepção sobre conservação, qualidade da água e zoneamento. Projetos em desenvolvimento concentram-se nos três primeiros temas, bem como abrangem aproximações de extensão entre estudantes dos ensinos fundamental e médio com alunos do ensino superior. A ARIE-SH possui potencial para o desenvolvimento de projetos de pesquisa e extensão nos mais diversos temas por ser ainda pouco explorada e por representar um dos últimos grandes fragmentos de vegetação na região oeste do Paraná.

É apresentado relato sobre o encontro de uma grande concentração de indivíduos de andorinha-do-campo Progne tapera em área urbana do interior do Paraná. É feita a descrição da movimentação do bando antes de seu pouso em árvores e fios de energia elétrica, assim como descritas as diferenças comportamentais que o bando apresentou em relação ao pouso quando do momento de alçar seu voo matutino. Incluye contenido parcial de los autores Abstract.Mammalian carnivores are considered a key group in maintaining ecologicalhealth and can indicate potential ecological integrity in landscapes where they occur. Carni-vores also hold high conservation value and their habitat requirements can guide managementand conservation plans. The order Carnivora has 84 species from 8 families in the Neotropicalregion: Canidae; Felidae; Mephitidae; Mustelidae; Otariidae; Phocidae; Procyonidae; andUrsidae. Herein, we include published and unpublished data on native terrestrial Neotropicalcarnivores (Canidae; Felidae; Mephitidae; Mustelidae; Procyonidae; and Ursidae). NEOTRO-PICAL CARNIVORES is a publicly available data set that includes 99,605 data entries from35,511 unique georeferenced coordinates. Detection/non-detection and quantitative data wereobtained from 1818 to 2018 by researchers, governmental agencies, non-governmental organi-zations, and private consultants. Data were collected using several methods including cameratrapping, museum collections, roadkill, line transect, and opportunistic records. Literature(peer-reviewed and grey literature) from Portuguese, Spanish and English were incorporated inthis compilation. Most of the data set consists of detection data entries (n=79,343; 79.7%) butalso includes non-detection data (n=20,262; 20.3%). Of those, 43.3% also include count data(n=43,151). The information available in NEOTROPICAL CARNIVORES will contribute tomacroecological, ecological, and conservation questions in multiple spatio-temporal perspec-tives. As carnivores play key roles in trophic interactions, a better understanding of their distri-bution and habitat requirements are essential to establish conservation management plans andsafeguard the future ecological health of Neotropical ecosystems. Our data paper, combinedwith other large-scale data sets, has great potential to clarify species distribution and relatedecological processes within the Neotropics. There are no copyright restrictions and no restric-tion for using data from this data paper, as long as the data paper is cited as the source of theinformation used. We also request that users inform us of how they intend to use the data.

We review the distribution of the Ornate Hawk-eagle, Spizaetus ornatus (Daudin, 1800), in the state of São Paulo, reporting localities with records of the species. Most locations where the species has been historically documented have no recent records, especially to the west of the large remnants of forest in the coastal mountain ranges. Most current records come from Serra de Paranapiacaba, southwestern São Paulo, whereas no records exist within the Cerrado domain. Unlike the neighboring state of Minas Gerais, where it is found in fragmented landscapes, in São Paulo, the species occurs exclusively within protected areas in large blocks of Atlantic Forest.

∙ The Atlantic Forest, a biodiversity hotspot, is the second largest tropical rainforest in South America. It harbors the greatest number of threatened and endemic bird species in Brazil. Serra de Paranapiacaba is one of the best‐preserved and largest forest remnants, inserted within the Serra do Mar massif. Despite its undoubted importance for bird conservation, ornithological knowledge in the region is still scattered across different studies. The aim of this article is to report bird species richness in the Serra de Paranapiacaba and to compare it with 19 other well‐preserved and well‐sampled Atlantic Forest localities via multivariate analysis to synthesize ornithological knowledge in the region. We compiled bird records from the literature and provide our own records based on surveys and non‐systematic observations at three localities between 2010 and 2017. We performed a Hierarchical Cluster and a Principal Coordinate analysis with bird communities to infer avifauna affinities of Serra de Paranapiacaba and other Atlantic Forest regions with different vegetation types. Overall, we compiled records for 479 species, 144 of which are endemic to Atlantic Forest and 15 which are threatened at global level. The Serra de Paranapiacaba bird community is more similar to that of localities where vegetation is montane ombrophilous dense forest and mixed ombrophilous forest and, to a lesser extent, to semi‐deciduous and restinga forest. Our study corroborates a division of southern and northern counterparts of some bird species along Serra do Mar as proposed by other authors. We suggest the Guapiara Plateau and Paranapiacaba Ridge, in São Paulo state, as barriers of these assemblages. Finally, we confirm the importance of the region for the conservation of Atlantic Forest birds and updated the data used to classify it as an Important Bird Area (IBA). Resumo ∙ Análise de diversidade beta de uma assembléia de aves em um hotspot de biodiversidade na Mata Atlântica A Mata Atlântica, um hotspot de biodiversidade, é a segunda maior floresta tropical na América do Sul. Nela se encontra o maior número de espécies de aves endêmicas e ameaçadas no Brasil. A Serra de Paranapiacaba é um dos maiores e mais bem preservados remanescentes florestais inseridos na Serra do Mar. Apesar de sua incotestável importântica para a conservação das aves, o conhecimento ornitológico da região ainda se encontra disperso por diferentes estudos. O objetivo deste artigo é reportar a riqueza de aves da Serra de Paranapiacaba e compará‐la com outras 19 localidades bem preservadas e bem amostradas na Mata Atlântica por meio de análises multivariadas com o objetivo de sintetizar o conhecimento ornitológico na região. Nós compilamos registros de aves da literatura e fornecemos registros pessoais e observações não sistemáticas em três localidades entre 2010 e 2017. Nós realizamos análise de cluster e análise de coordenadas principais com a comunidade de aves para inferir a afinidade de avifauna entre a Serra de Paranapiacaba e outras localidades na Mata Atlântica com diferentes tipos de vegetação. Ao todo, nós compilamos 479 registros de espécies de aves, 144 das quais são endêmicas da Mata Atlântica e 15 ameaçadas de extinção em nível global. A comunidade de aves da Serra de Paranapiacaba é mais relacionada com localidades onde a vegetação é formada por floresta ombrófila densa montana e floresta ombrófila mista e, em menor medida, com localidades de florestas estacionais semideciduais e restinga. O nosso estudo corrobora ainda uma divisão entre as partes norte e sul de algumas espécies ao longo da Serra do Mar como proposto por outros autores. Nós sugerimos o platô de Guapiara e a Serra de Paranapiacaba, no estado de São Paulo, como barreiras para essas assembleias. They are strongholds of an almost complete elevational gradient, which harbor both lowland and highland bird taxa. Despite being considered a biodiversity hotspot, few ornithologists have surveyed these forests, especially along elevational gradients. Here we compile bird records acquired from systematic surveys and random observations carried out since the 1980s in a 7,500 ha private protected area: Serra Bonita private reserve. We recorded 368 species, of which 143 are Atlantic Forest endemic taxa. Some 16 and 13 species are threatened at the global and national levels, respectively. If one accounts for subspecies, the number of Brazilian threatened taxa raises to 21. Species composition differs between lower and higher elevations, in which case lowlands harbor Amazonia-related taxa, whereas highlands are the home of Atlantic Forest-related taxa. The modification of natural areas to meet the needs of human beings is called urbanization. Its effects on bird groups have been extensively studied, and mainly address changes in relative abundance and demographic aspects. Here we wished to determine the probabilities of detection and occupancy of the Great Kiskadee Pitangus sulphuratus in urban environments. We selected 10 sites within the urban area of ​​the city of Santa Helena, western Parana state, southern Brazil, to conduct 5-minute point counts and used occupancy modelling and logistic regression to determine the aforementioned parameters. The probability of detecting the species is suggested to halve as a function of time, while its occupancy probability alone was not related to the levels of afforestation or noise pollution; the number of houses around point counts showed a positive influence on their detection. When we analyzed the probability with the variables together and their interactions, our results suggest that Great Kiskadee is well adapted to urban environments.

Although the Atlantic forest is the best-studied Brazilian phytogeographic domain, few coastal municipalities of the state of Sao Paulo can count on published and critically revised bird species list, which are important initial steps to organize conservation inniciatives. Here we present historical records from Bertioga, a northern coastline municipality of the state of Sao Paulo, as well as recent records obtained in surveys during the past years within the municipality. Surveying methods, carried out between 2008-2011, included point counts, 10-species lists, transect counts and mist nets. This compendium resulted in 330 documented species, 90 of which still await documentation. Of these 420 bird species, 85 (20.4) are Atlantic forest endemic species and as many as eight, six and 23 are threatened at the global, national and state levels, respectively. Seventeen species are reported from Bertioga for the first time. Some records based exclusively on sightings must be carefully considered, whereas the species richness reflects the diversity of the habitats we visited, which varied from lowland and montane forests, to slopes and fluvial and tidal-influenced environments. We highlight that every habitat of the region should be continuously inventoried and that the absence of legal protection of lowland forests (which are not considered under the elevational threshold of the Serra do Mar State Park) must be reevaluated, as they harbor a greater number of endemic and threatened species than do other elevational bands.

Scientists have long been trying to understand why the Neotropical region holds the highest diversity of birds on Earth. Recently, there has been increased interest in morphological variation between and within species, and in how climate, topography, and anthropogenic pressures may explain and affect phenotypic variation. Because morphological data are not always available for many species at the local or regional scale, we are limited in our understanding of intra- and interspecies spatial morphological variation. Here, we present the ATLANTIC BIRD TRAITS, a data set that includes measurements of up to 44 morphological traits in 67,197 bird records from 2,790 populations distributed throughout the Atlantic forests of South America. This data set comprises information, compiled over two centuries (1820–2018), for 711 bird species, which represent 80% of all known bird diversity in the Atlantic Forest. Among the most commonly reported traits are sex (n = 65,717), age (n = 63,852), body mass (n = 58,768), flight molt presence (n = 44,941), molt presence (n = 44,847), body molt presence (n = 44,606), tail length (n = 43,005), reproductive stage (n = 42,588), bill length (n = 37,409), body length (n = 28,394), right wing length (n = 21,950), tarsus length (n = 20,342), and wing length (n = 18,071). The most frequently recorded species are Chiroxiphia caudata (n = 1,837), Turdus albicollis (n = 1,658), Trichothraupis melanops (n = 1,468), Turdus leucomelas (n = 1,436), and Basileuterus culicivorus (n = 1,384). The species recorded in the greatest number of sampling localities are Basileuterus culicivorus (n = 243), Trichothraupis melanops (n = 242), Chiroxiphia caudata (n = 210), Platyrinchus mystaceus (n = 208), and Turdus rufiventris (n = 191). ATLANTIC BIRD TRAITS (ABT) is the most comprehensive data set on measurements of bird morphological traits found in a biodiversity hotspot; it provides data for basic and applied research at multiple scales, from individual to community, and from the local to the macroecological perspectives. Forest cover suffered for centuries from log exploitation and, as a result, most of the remaining forests are now an impoverished subset of the original vegetation. We show how the bird community changed over time by comparing historical and recent records. Currently, 228 species can be recorded, for a compilation of 410 species, of which 359 are documented. Some 89 forest species with historical records failed to be detected in recent surveys. Of the 72 Atlantic Forest or Cerrado endemic species, no more than 29 (40%) are still found. The bird community changed from one which used to be related to coastline rain forests to another, which relates more to drier semideciduous forests of the interior. Para avaliar a riqueza e a abundância específica da comunidade de aves de um remanescente de mata semidecidual do interior do Estado de São Paulo, sudeste do Brasil, foi conduzido o censo da avifauna florestal utilizando-se a metodologia de contagem em transecção. Estes resultados foram comparados com levantamento realizado na mesma localidade 30 anos antes, e as aves foram classificadas de acordo com suas categorias alimentares com a finalidade de associá-las à tendência ao aumento/diminuição de suas abundâncias após este intervalo de tempo. Embora tenha havido predominância de espécies com diminuição populacional, todas as categorias tróficas analisadas apresentaram também espécies com aumento em suas abundâncias. A maioria das espécies com propensão a deslocarem-se entre fragmentos apresentou diminuição em suas abundâncias. Sugerimos que, em relação a suas abundâncias específicas, as categorias tróficas são igualmente afetadas pelos processos da fragmentação, e que a regeneração florestal sofrida pelo remanescente pode ter resultado na perda de espécies de bordas. Espécies cujas abundâncias tenham reduzido neste intervalo de tempo podem sofrer extinção local futuramente. Few studies have evaluated long-term changes in avian abundance in forest remnants. To compare both species richness and abundance of the bird community in a forest fragment located in the municipality of Gália, state of São Paulo, southeastern Brazil, we surveyed forest birds using transect counts. We compared our results with a survey conducted 30 years earlier at the same locality and further classified bird species according to their food habits to eventually predict fluctuations of specific abundance. Although species with population declines predominated in the community, all trophic categories had species which increased their abundances. Most species prone to move around remnants decreased in abundance. We suggest that, regarding specific abundances, trophic categories may be equally affected as a result of fragmentation processes and that the forest regeneration of this remnant may have led to the loss of edge species. Species that suffered from abundance loss during this time period may become locally extinct in the near future. O cerradão é uma das fisionomias menos conhecidas e mais desmatadas do bioma e poucos levantamentos avifaunísticos foram realizados nessas florestas. Para revisar os estudos sobre aves de cerradão e complementar os poucos inventários já existentes realizados nesse tipo florestal no estado de São Paulo, foi realizado um levantamento bibliográfico dos estudos publicados sobre aves de cerradão. Adicionalmente foi conduzido um levantamento das aves de um fragmento de cerradão de 314 ha localizado na região central do estado de São Paulo, Brasil, entre setembro de 2005 e dezembro de 2006 com a utilização de transecções lineares com raio ilimitado de detecção. de 95 estudos envolvendo aves de cerradão, apenas 17 (18%) discriminaram espécies registradas dentro desta fisionomia daquelas que obtiveram registros em outros ambientes de Cerrado. Exceto por um estudo, nenhuma outra investigação encontrou mais de 64 espécies de aves neste ambiente, resultado compartilhado com diversas regiões do Brasil e também da Bolívia. Diferenças no número de espécies entre cerradões não puderam ser atribuídas à degradação dos ambientes estudados ou tamanho de fragmento. Considerando os registros de cerradões no Brasil e na Bolívia, a compilação de dados acumulou 250 espécies distribuídas em 36 famílias e 15 ordens. Durante nossos trabalhos de campo em localidade do interior paulista foram registradas 48 espécies distribuídas em 20 famílias, incluindo o fruxu-do-cerradão (Neopelma pallescens), ameaçada em São Paulo, e o soldadinho (Antilophia galeata), quase ameaçada no estado e endêmica do Cerrado. Dentre as espécies mais abundantes no fragmento, nenhuma delas é ameaçada ou endêmica do bioma. The Cerrado region still receives relatively little ornithological attention, although it is regarded as the only tropical savanna in the world considered to be a biodiversity hotspot. Cerradão is one of the least known and most deforested Cerrado physiognomies and few recent bird surveys have been conducted in these forests. In order to rescue bird records and complement the few existing inventories of this under-studied forest type in the state of São Paulo, we looked for published papers on birds of cerradão. Additionally we surveyed birds at a 314-ha cerradão remnant located in central São Paulo, Brazil, from September 2005-December 2006 using unlimited distance transect counts. Out of 95 investigations involving cerradão bird studies, only 17 (18%) investigations teased apart bird species recorded inside cerradão from those recorded in other physiognomies of Cerrado. Except for one study, no research found more than 64 species in this type of forest, a result shared within many regions from Brazil and Bolivia. Differences in species richness do not seem be related with levels of disturbance of landscape or fragment size. Considering all species recorded in cerradão in Brazil and Bolivia, a compilation of data accumulated 250 species in 36 families and 15 orders. In recent surveys at central São Paulo, we recorded 48 species in 20 families, including the Pale-bellied Tyrant-Manakin Neopelma pallescens, threatened in São Paulo, and the Helmeted Manakin Antilophia galeata, near threatened in the state and endemic to the Cerrado region. Among the most abundant species inside this fragment, none was considered to be neither threatened nor endemic. Apesar de instituída em 1954, quando passou a pertencer ao Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo, a avifauna desta localidade já era objeto de pesquisas desde a década de 1940, época em que foram realizadas as primeiras coletas de aves. Aqui é apresentada pela primeira vez uma revisão de todos os registros avifaunísticos realizados nessa localidade ao longo de mais de 68 anos assim como a adição de novos registros com base em dados coletados recentemente com transectos lineares e redes de neblina. Os registros para Boracéia estiveram representados em museus, na literatura e em dados não publicados que, somados aos registros recentes, acumularam 323 espécies de aves para a localidade. Destas, 117 são endêmicas da Mata Atlântica e 28 estão sob diferentes graus de ameaça no Estado. Embora alguns registros possam ser duvidosos e necessitem de confirmação, algumas espécies representam os únicos registros para o Estado. Boracéia inclui ainda uma espécie recém descoberta em áreas próximas, sendo de grande importância para a conservação das aves de Mata Atlântica. Boracéia Biological Station, near the city of Salesópolis, SP, is located in one of the most well-defined centers of endemism in eastern Brazil - the Serra do Mar Center. While the station was established only in 1954 under the auspices of the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo, the avifauna of this locality had already attracted the attention of ornithologists by the 1940s, when the first specimens were collected. Here we describe the ornithological history of the Boracéia Biological Station with a review of all the bird species recorded during more than 68 years, including recent transect and mist-netting records. Boracéia's records were found in museums, literature and unpublished reports that totaled 323 bird species when recent data is also considered. of these, 117 are endemic to the Atlantic forest and 28 are threatened in the state. Although there are a few doubtful records that need to be checked, some species are the only sightings in the state. Boracéia includes a recently discovered species near the station site and is extremely important for the conservation of Atlantic forest birds. Setopagis maculosa (Todd, 1920) (Aves: Caprimulgidae) was described based on a single male specimen collected by Samuel Milton Klages in French Guiana, northeastern South America. Since then, no new specimens have been collected nor have any reliable records been made, and the validity of the species has been questioned. A detailed analysis of the holotype reveals that it has unique and distinctive morphological traits that support the validity and taxonomic status of the species, which is provisionally placed in Setopagis. We present new information on the type locality at the time of its collection, which may shed some light on the habitat preferences of the species, and we provide details on its plumage that have been largely overlooked and that will be important for future field identification.

Piculus chrysochloros (Vieillot 1818) is a species of woodpecker that ranges from Argentina to Panama, occurring in lowland forests as well as Cerrado, Caatinga and Chaco vegetation. Currently, nine subspecies are accepted, but no study has evaluated individual variation within populations, so the status of these taxa remains uncertain. Here we review the taxonomy and distribution of this species, based on morphological and morphometric data from 267 specimens deposited in ornithological collections. Our results suggest the existence of six unambiguous taxonomic units that can be treated as phylogenetic species: Piculus xanthochloros (SclaterSalvin 1875), from northwestern South America; Piculus capistratus (Malherbe 1862), from northern Amazonia west to the Branco River; Piculus laemostictus Todd 1937, from southern Amazonia; Piculus chrysochloros (Vieillot 1818), from the Cerrado, Caatinga and Chaco; Piculus paraensis (Snethlage 1907) from the Belém Center of Endemism; and Piculus polyzonus (Valenciennes 1826) from the Atlantic Forest. Both Brazilian endemics (P. polyzonus and P. paraensis) are threatened due to habitat loss. In addition, we found one undescribed form from the Tapajós-Tocantins interfluve, now under study, that may prove to be a valid species once more specimens and other data become available.

Leucism is the partial or total lack of melanin in the feathers of birds, but it can be expressed in different forms. Currently, little information on leucistic wild tanagers is available. In this short communication we report an individual of the Fawn-breasted Tanager with complete leucism foraging in a mixed-species flock in an important Atlantic forest reserve in southeastern Brazil.

South America holds 30% of the world's avifauna, with the Atlantic Forest representing one of the richest regions of the Neotropics. Here we have compiled a data set on Brazilian Atlantic Forest bird occurrence (150,423) and abundance samples (N = 832 bird species; 33,119 bird individuals) using multiple methods, including qualitative surveys, mist nets, point counts, and line transects). We used four main sources of data: museum collections, on‐line databases, literature sources, and unpublished reports. The data set comprises 4,122 localities and data from 1815 to 2017. Most studies were conducted in the Florestas de Interior (1,510 localities) and Serra do Mar (1,280 localities) biogeographic sub‐regions. Considering the three main quantitative methods (mist net, point count, and line transect), we compiled abundance data for 745 species in 576 communities. In the data set, the most frequent species were Basileuterus culicivorus, Cyclaris gujanensis, and Conophaga lineata. There were 71 singletons, such as Lipaugus conditus and Calyptura cristata. We suggest that this small number of records reinforces the critical situation of these taxa in the Atlantic Forest. The information provided in this data set can be used for macroecological studies and to foster conservation strategies in this biodiversity hotspot. Embora estudos preliminares tenham sido realizados em Ubatuba, localidade situada em área de Mata Atlântica, ainda não existe uma listagem dos registros documentados das espécies de aves deste município litorâneo. Para a realização deste compêndio foi realizada busca na literatura, assim como outras fontes, dos registros documentados das espécies de aves de Ubatuba, Estado de São Paulo. Adicionalmente, inventários não sistematizados seguindo a metodologia de transecção linear foram conduzidos ao longo dos últimos sete anos em diferentes regiões e altitudes do município para o registro documentado das espécies. O número total de espécies documentadas foi de 417, das quais 11% são endêmicas do Brasil. Outros 26% representam endemismos da Mata Atlântica e 60 espécies estão ameaçadas ou quase ameaçadas de extinção no Estado. Espécies reportadas para o município, porém sem documentação, somaram 49, incluídas em 27 famílias. Comparando-se os registros atuais com os históricos, nenhuma espécie foi extinta do município. Ubatuba é uma das regiões mais conhecidas ornitologicamente da Serra do Mar paulista, mas ainda há algumas localidades em maiores altitudes que devem trazer novos registros para a área com o aumento dos esforços de observação de aves em tais locais. Although preliminary surveys have been conducted at the Atlantic Forest of Ubatuba, there is no list of documented bird records from this coastline municipality. To organize such a compilation, we searched the literature and a number of different sources for all documented records of birds from Ubatuba, state of São Paulo. We further carried out a 7-year non-systematic bird inventory in different regions and elevations to document the species within the municipality. The total number of documented bird species is 417, 11% of which are endemic to Brazil. Another 26% are Atlantic Forest endemics and as many as 60 species are under threat categories, including near-threatened birds, in the state. Some 49 species of 27 families are reported from the municipality but still lack documentation. Considering historical records, no species have extinguished from the municipality. Ubatuba is one of the most studied regions along Serra do Mar in São Paulo regarding its ornithology, but there are still high-elevational gaps that will yield significant additions of species to the area with increasing surveying efforts.

Devido ao rápido e contínuo desmatamento, inventários avifaunísticos realizados na Mata Atlântica têm seguido protocolos de levantamentos rápidos para acumular uma grande quantidade de informação em períodos de tempo relativamente curtos. Para averiguar qual metodologia deve mais rapidamente acumular o maior número de espécies (cerca de 90% das espécies estimadas a partir de dados empíricos), foram realizados pontos de escuta de 10 minutos e listas de 10 espécies em florestas de baixada da Mata Atlântica de São Paulo durante as estações reprodutivas entre 2008 e 2010. De maneira geral, pontos detectaram tantas espécies quanto as listas (79 versus 83, respectivamente), sendo que 88 pontos (14,7 h) detectaram 90% da riqueza estimada. Quarenta e uma listas foram insuficientes para o registro de 90% da riqueza estimada, porém acumularam mais rapidamente o número de espécies e num período mais curto de tempo, provavelmente devido à natureza da metodologia de pontos de escuta, na qual espécies registradas durante a locomoção entre pontos não são consideradas. Levantamentos rápidos nessas florestas irão rapidamente detectar mais espécies com a utilização das listas de 10 espécies. As metodologias compartilharam 63% das espécies registradas, mas este resultado pode refletir diferenças nas amostragens definidas em localidades e intervalo de tempo distintos durante a realização das amostragens. Due to rapid and continuous deforestation, recent bird surveys in the Atlantic Forest are following rapid assessment programs to accumulate significant amounts of data during short periods of time. During this study, two surveying methods were used to evaluate which technique rapidly accumulated most species (>; 90% of the estimated empirical value) at lowland Atlantic Forests in the state of São Paulo, southeastern Brazil. Birds were counted during the 2008-2010 breeding seasons using 10-minute point counts and 10-species lists. Overall, point counting detected as many species as lists (79 vs. 83, respectively), and 88 points (14.7 h) detected 90% of the estimated species richness. Forty-one lists were insufficient to detect 90% of all species. However, lists accumulated species faster in a shorter time period, probably due to the nature of the point count method in which species detected while moving between points are not considered. Rapid assessment programs in these forests will rapidly detect more species using 10-species lists. Both methods shared 63% of all forest species, but this may be due to spatial and temporal mismatch between samplings of each method.

Poucos estudos foram realizados nessa localidade, extremamente importante no que diz respeito às aves da Mata Atlântica do interior do Estado. Para caracterizar a avifauna da estação com dados recentes e contribuir com novos registros, foi realizado um levantamento da avifauna utilizando-se o método de Pontos de Escuta entre outubro de 2005 e dezembro de 2006. Foram registradas 226 espécies enquanto diversos autores registraram outras 68, para um total de 293. Muitas espécies são endêmicas da Mata Atlântica ou do Cerrado e algumas são ameaçadas no Estado, justificando a existência dessa unidade de conservação e provando a necessidade de inventários em longo prazo e da preservação de fragmentos de mata estacional semidecídua nativa. Caetetus Ecological Station harbors one of the largest seasonal semideciduous forest remnants in the state of São Paulo. Few investigators have conducted bird surveys in this locality, one of the most important sites regarding Atlantic forest birds from the interior of the state. In order to determine the station's avifauna with recently collected data and to contribute with new records we censused the bird community using the Point Count method from October 2005 to December 2006. We recorded 226 species whereas other authors have recorded another 68, for a total of 293 for the station. Many species were Atlantic forest or Cerrado endemics and some were endangered in the state, justifying the existence of this conservation unit and proving the need of long-term surveys and preservation of seasonal semideciduous forests native fragments. Cercomacra cinerascens Hellmayr 1905 is a medium-sized species of antbird distributed throughout the Amazon Basin in South America. It comprises a complex of four currently recognized taxa, C. c. cinerascens (Sclater 1857), C. c. immaculata Chubb 1918, C. c. sclateri Hellmayr 1905 and C. c. iterata Zimmer 1932, all characterized by the grey coloration of males and brownish olive coloration of females, long and graduated white-tipped tails, hidden white interscapular patch and distinct stiff rictal bristles. All subspecies primarily inhabit unflooded terra firme forests, the former two occurring north of the Rio Amazonas and the latter two in southern Amazonia (Fig. 1, Zimmer & Isler 2003).
