Abstract

This study attempts to understand the factors that influence clinician resistance to the implementation of health information technology in a mandatory setting. A survey study was conducted with 202 clinicians regarding their perceptions of the implementation of electronic medication management systems (eMMS) in an Australian hospital. The data was collected during the initial roll-out of eMMS for model validation and quantitative analysis. The overall results indicated that performance expectancy, switching costs, and facilitating conditions are direct predictors of clinician resistance, whereas effort expectancy and social influence showed indirect effects on clinician resistance through performance expectancy or switching costs. The study is among the first study that investigates passive clinician resistance to the implementation of health information technology in a health organisation. This study also focused on opposition behaviour among under-examined degrees of resistance. This study provides some insights to the hospital management on how to mitigate clinician resistance in the implementation of health information technology. Other types of clinician resistance, such as postponement and rejection, are not examined in this study. Future research on postponement behaviour and rejection behaviour is needed to have a more comprehensive view of clinician resistance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Health information system (HIS) is widely used in the healthcare industry to improve healthcare quality. It is essential to evaluate HIS adoption and assimilation in the postimplementation stage. This study argues that the factors influencing HIS success are not isolated, but are determined by the interaction of Human, Organization and Technology. Accordingly, this study proposes a conceptual model based on the HOT-fit framework, combining the IS Success model and the IS Individual Assimilation model to explore the influence of these factors' interplay on HIS success. We adopt a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to showcase that there are five configurations of human, organizational and technological factors that lead to high organization benefit from HIS implementation. This study contributes to the HIS literature by introducing a configurational approach to explore the complex causal relationships between antecedents and outcomes and proposing a holistic model for HIS evaluation. Abstract

The adoption of information systems changes over time, and to maximize the benefits of these systems, it is important to understand their evolution and align with these changes to determine the operational strategy. This paper aims to investigate the evolution of factors that impact the benefits of electronic medication management system (EMMS) implementation in an Australian hospital. To explore potential temporal changes, a research model was proposed that includes four factors: ease of use, usefulness, colleague opinion, and organizational support, which are expected to affect EMMS benefits. Two similar surveys were conducted at two different time points, immediately after introducing EMMS and after one year of use, with approximately 200 users providing data. The research model was tested using fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA), which emphasizes the configurational influence of factors. The results indicate that the solutions that lead to EMMS benefits differ between the two time periods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
