Abstract

The main goal of the AEgIS experiment at CERN is to test the weak equivalence principle for antimatter. AEgIS will measure the free-fall of an antihydrogen beam traversing a moir\'e deflectometer. The goal is to determine the gravitational acceleration g for antihydrogen with an initial relative accuracy of 1% by using an emulsion detector combined with a silicon micro-strip detector to measure the time of flight. Nuclear emulsions can measure the annihilation vertex of antihydrogen atoms with a precision of about 1 - 2 microns r.m.s. We present here results for emulsion detectors operated in vacuum using low energy antiprotons from the CERN antiproton decelerator. We compare with Monte Carlo simulations, and discuss the impact on the AEgIS project., Comment: 20 pages, 16 figures, 3 tables

Abstract

The advanced interferometer network will herald a new era in observational astronomy. There is a very strong science case to go beyond the advanced detector network and build detectors that operate in a frequency range from 1 Hz-10 kHz, with sensitivity a factor ten better in amplitude. Abstract

The SAGACE experiment consists of a mm/sub-mm telescope with a 3-m diameter primary mirror, coupled to a cryogenic multi-beam differential spectrometer. SAGACE explores the sky in the 100-760 GHz frequency range, using four diffraction-limited bolometer arrays. The instrument is designed to perform spectroscopic surveys of the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effects of thousands of galaxy clusters, of the spectral energy distribution of active galactic nuclei, and of the [CII] line of a thousand galaxies in the redshift desert. In 2008 a full phase-A study for a national small mission was completed and delivered to the Italian Space Agency (ASI). We have shown that taking advantage of the differential operation of the Fourier Transform Spectrometer, this ambitious instrument can operate from a Molniya orbit, and can be built and operated within the tight budget of a small mission., Comment: Proceedings of the 12th Marcel Grossman Meeting

Abstract

A search for periodic gravitational-wave signals from isolated neutron stars in the NAUTILUS detector data is presented. We have analyzed half a year of data over the frequency band $<922.2; 923.2>$ Hz, the spindown range $<-1.463\times10^{-8}; 0>$ Hz/s and over the entire sky. We have divided the data into 2 day stretches and we have analyzed each stretch coherently using matched filtering. We have imposed a low threshold for the optimal detection statistic to obtain a set of candidates that are further examined for coincidences among various data stretches. For some candidates we have also investigated the change of the signal-to-noise ratio when we increase the observation time from two to four days. Our analysis has not revealed any gravitational-wave signals. Therefore we have imposed upper limits on the dimensionless gravitational-wave amplitude over the parameter space that we have searched. Depending on frequency, our upper limit ranges from $3.4 \times 10^{-23}$ to $1.3 \times 10^{-22}$. We have attempted a statistical verification of the hypotheses leading to our conclusions. Abstract

The data collected during 2005 by the resonant bar Explorer are divided into segments and incoherently summed in order to perform an all-sky search for periodic gravitational wave signals. The parameter space of the search spanned about 40 Hz in frequency, over 23927 positions in the sky. Neither source orbital corrections nor spindown parameters have been included, with the result that the search was sensible to isolated neutron stars with a frequency drift less than 6 X 10^{-11} Hz/s. No gravitational wave candidates have been found by means of the present analysis, which led to a best upper limit of 3.1 X 10^{-23} for the dimensionless strain amplitude., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Parametric transducers, such as superconducting rf cavities, can boost the bandwidth and sensitivity of the next generation resonant antennas, thanks to a readily available technology. We have developed a fully coupled dynamic model of the system "antenna--transducer" and worked out some estimates of signal--to--noise ratio and the stability conditions in various experimental configurations. We also show the design and the prototype of a rf cavity which, together with a suitable read--out electronic, will be used as a test bench for the parametric transducer., Comment: 7 pages, 3 eps figures. Abstract

The AEg¯ $\overline {\rm{g}}$IS experiment [1] aims at directly measuring the gravitational acceleration g on a beam of cold antihydrogen (H¯$\overline {\rm{H}}$) to a precision of 1%, performing the first test with antimatter of the (WEP) Weak Equivalence Principle. The experimental apparatus is sited at the Antiproton Decelerator (AD) at CERN, Geneva, Switzerland. Since the AD will not be running during 2013,during the refurbishment of the CERN accelerators, the experiment is currently working with positrons, electrons and protons, in order to prepare the way for the antihydrogen production in late 2014.

28. Pulmonary toxicity of instillrd cadmium doped silica nanoparticles during acute and subacute stages in rats

Abstract

Potential risk associated with new nanomaterial exposure needs to be assessed. This in vivo study investigated pulmonary effects of engineered cadmium-containing silica nanoparticles Cd/SiNPs (1 mg/rat), silica SiNPs (600 μg/rat) and CdCl2 (400 μg/rat) 1, 7 and 30 days after intratracheal instillation. Comprehensive histopathological and immunocytochemical characterization of lung damage in terms of apoptosis, cell proliferation, inflammation, fibrosis and metabolism were obtained. After exposure to all treatments, lung parenchyma showed injury patterns characterized by collapsed alveoli, inflammation, granuloma formation, thickened alveolar septa and bronchiolar epithelium exfoliation. Type II pneumocytes, containing scarcely surfactantlamellated bodies, were also observed. Apoptotic phenomena enhanced as following, Cd/SiNPs>CdCl2> SiNPs. In parallel with these findings, a significant increase of PCNA-immunoreactive cells was detected together with high mitotic activity. Cellular localization and distribution of IL-6, IP-10 and TGF-ß1 revealed an increased expression of these cytokines as evidence of an enhanced cellular inflammatory response. CYP450- immunoreactivity was also enhanced, at bronchiolar (e.g. Clara cells) and alveolar (e.g. macrophages) level after both Cd/SiNPs and CdCl2. These overall effects were observed acutely and lasted until the 30th day, with Cd/SiNPs producing the most marked effects. Collagen-immunolabelling changed particularly 7 and 30 days after Cd/SiNPs, when a strong stromal fibrogenic reaction occurred. The present findings suggest that Cd/SiNPs produce significantly greater pulmonary alterations than either SiNPs or CdCl2 under the present experimental conditions

Abstract

The AE [??] IS experiment [1] aims at directly measuring the gravitational acceleration g on a beam of cold antihydrogen ( [??] ) to a precision of 1%, performing the first test with antimatter of the (WEP) Weak Equivalence Principle. The experimental apparatus is sited at the Antiproton Decelerator (AD) at CERN, Geneva, Switzerland. Abstract

The main goal of the AEgIS experiment at CERN is to test the weak equivalence principle for antimatter. We will measure the Earth's gravitational acceleration ḡ with antihydrogen atoms being launched in a horizontal vacuum tube and traversing a moiré deflectometer. We intend to use a position sensitive device made of nuclear emulsions (combined with a time-of-flight detector such as silicon μ-strips) to measure precisely their annihilation points at the end of the tube. Abstract

After the first production of cold antihydrogen by the ATHENA and ATRAP experiments ten years ago, new second-generation experiments are aimed at measuring the fundamental properties of this anti-atom. The goal of AEGIS (Antimatter Experiment: Gravity, Interferometry, Spectroscopy) is to test the weak equivalence principle by studying the gravitational interaction between matter and antimatter with a pulsed, cold antihydrogen beam. The experiment is currently being assembled at CERN's Antiproton Decelerator. In AEGIS, antihydrogen will be produced by charge exchange of cold antiprotons with positronium excited to a high Rydberg state (n > 20). An antihydrogen beam will be produced by controlled acceleration in an electric-field gradient (Stark acceleration). The deflection of the horizontal beam due to its free fall in the gravitational field of the earth will be measured with a moiré deflectometer. Initially, the gravitational acceleration will be determined to a precision of 1%, requiring the detection of about 105 antihydrogen atoms. In this paper, after a general description, the present status of the experiment will be reviewed.

Abstract

AEgIS (Expérience sur l'Antimatière: Gravité, Interférométrie, Spectrométrie) est une expérience approuvée par le CERN qui vise une étude globale de la physique de l'anti-hydrogène. Dans AEgIS, l'anti-hydrogène sera produit par des réactions d'échange de charges d'anti-protons froids avec des atomes de positronium excités dans un état de Rydberg (n > 20). Dans la première phase de l'expérience, l'accélération est contrôlée par un gradient de champ électrique (effet Stark); une mesure subséquente en chute libre dans un déflectomètre de Moiré nous fournira un test du principe d'équivalence faible. Dans une deuxième phase, l'anti-hydrogène sera ralenti, confiné et refroidi par laser pour des études de CPT et de spectroscopie de précision. Après une description générale de l'expérience, nous passons ici en revue l'état d'avancement des travaux en accordant une attention particulière à la production et l'excitation des atomes de positronium.

Abstract

Increasing interest in safety evaluation of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) has risen in relation to their wide applications, together with the evidence of their cytotoxic effects. It has been shown that chemical functionalization extends the applications of CNTs, conferring them new functions that cannot otherwise be acquired by pristine CNTs, but also impacts on biological response to CNTs, modifying their toxicological profile. We assessed the onset of pulmonary toxic effects caused by pristine MW-CNTs and functionalized MWNH2 or MW-COOH, 16 days after intratracheal instillation (1 mg/kg b.w.); major endpoints tested included (i) histopathology of lung (Haematoxylin/Eosin Staining), (ii) apoptotic/proliferating features examined by TUNEL and PCNA immunostaining, and (iii) presence/distribution of (1) Transforming Growth Factor-beta1 (TGFß1), (2) Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and (3) Collagen (Type I) investigated by immunochemical methods, as markers of lung toxicity, inflammation, and fibrosis, respectively. Lung histopathology from exposed animals showed dark, particulate-laden macrophages, reflecting carbon nanomaterial engulfing, both at alveolar and bronchiolar levels, after treatment with all the tested CNTs. Alteration of lung architecture was also observed in several areas showing collapsed thick-walled alveoli and the presence of micro-haemorrhagic foci. TUNEL and PCNA, indicative of apoptosis and cell proliferation respectively, showed a significant increase of immunopositive cells at bronchiolar, alveolar and macrophagic levels, as expression of an improved cellular turnover. Increased immunoreactivity for pulmonary TGFß1 and IL-6 was observed in treated rats, particularly in bronchiolar areas, collapsed alveoli and at stromal level, while evident changes for collagen were not detected. Taken together these findings demonstrated the general pulmonary toxicity coupled with inflammatory response after in vivo exposure to CNTs, without overt signs of fibrosis and granuloma formation, irrespectively of nanotube functionalization

We present results of the search for coincident burst excitations over a 24 hours long data set collected by AURIGA, EXPLORER, NAUTILUS and Virgo detectors during September 2005. The search of candidate triggers was performed independently on each of the data sets from single detectors. We looked for two-fold time coincidences between these candidates using an algorithm optimized for a given population of sources and we calculated the efficiency of detection through injections of templated signal waveforms into the streams of data. To this purpose we have considered the case of signals shaped as damped sinusoids coming from the galactic center direction. In this framework our method targets an optimal balance between high efficiency and low false alarm rate, aiming at setting confidence intervals as stringent as possible in terms of the rate of the selected source models.
