The sourcing of raw materials is becoming an increasingly concerning issue for the European Union, which is adopting a series of strategies aimed at mitigating the dependence on third countries for procurement. The supply of feldspars, for instance, which is significant within the ceramic industry, raises concerns due to heavy reliance on third countries. Therefore, it is imperative to identify potential alternative sources for procurement, including the recycling of waste from the extraction of ornamental granite rocks enriched in such minerals. The Sardinia region in Italy, once a global leader in granite extraction, has now witnessed a significant reduction in production due to intense competition worldwide, resulting in severe economic repercussions. Additionally, traces of this period remain in the territory in the form of enormous quantities of extraction waste, defacing the landscape and posing potential environmental issues. This study is part of a broader research initiative aimed at identifying a physical process to concentrate rare earth element (REE) minerals from granite waste in a quarry located in Buddusò, Sardinia. The specific objective of this study is to analyze the whole rock composition, crushing powder, and the diamagnetic by-products generated by gravity and magnetic separations to identify potential applications for their use. Bedrock geology is crucial in structuring alpine plant communities. Old studies mainly focused on the compositional differences between alpine plant communities on carbonate rocks and crystalline rocks, i.e., calcareous vs. siliceous vegetation. Increasing attention is being paid to bedrock types other than calcareous or siliceous ones, viz. those which have intermediate geochemical characteristics between pure calcareous and pure siliceous ones. Among these types of 'intermediate' bedrocks, calc-schists and serpentines are generally characterized by vegetation comprised of a mixture of basiphilous and acidophilous species. We selected several sites in alpine grasslands in the Western Italian Alps, on calc-schist and serpentine bedrocks, located at 2500 ± 100 m above sea level. X-ray fluorescence quantification of major and trace elements, combined with stereomicroscopic examination of bedrock samples with a petrographic approach, revealed a much broader range of bedrock types than recognized by inspection of geological maps. The vegetation investigated in our study was mostly composed of a set of species found more or less frequently in alpine silicicolous or calcicolous plant communities of the Alps and other European mountains. The carbonate content in the bedrock was one of the main drivers of variation in grassland vegetation, not necessarily related to soil pH. The present paper aims to study the Wachau Valley in Austria as a representative Cultural Landscape under threat from extreme hydrometeorological hazards linked to climate change. The primary objective is to investigate the impacts and assess the vulnerability associated with the events of heavy rain and flooding. The methodology employed consists of an investigation of recorded past events impacting the Wachau; a vulnerability ranking system; a climate time series analysis based on earth observation products; and future hazard maps at territorial level, developed with outputs from regional and global climate models. The investigation we carried out provides a vulnerability assessment of two terraced areas with a surface of about 10,000 m2 in total, characterized by the presence of dry stone walls, with different state of conservation in the Municipality of Krems (Wachau). In addition, climate projections at territorial level for the extreme climate indices R20mm, R95pTOT, and R×5day—selected for investigating the likelihood of increases/decreases in events of heavy rain and large basin flooding—are provided, with a spatial resolution of ~12 km for the near and far future (2021–2050; 2071–2100) under stabilizing (RCP 4.5) and pessimistic (RCP 8.5) scenarios. The results indicate a general increase for the three indices in the studied areas during the far future under the pessimistic scenario, suggesting a heightened risk of heavy rain and flooding. These findings aim to inform policymakers and decision-makers in their development of strategies for safeguarding cultural heritage.
