Abstract

The adoption of data science brings vast benefits to Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) including business productivity, economic growth, innovation and jobs creation. Data Science can support SMEs to optimise production processes, anticipate customers' needs, predict machinery failures and deliver efficient smart services. Businesses can also harness the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Big Data and the smart use of digital technologies to enhance productivity and performance, paving the way for innovation. However, integrating data science decisions into an SME requires both skills and IT investments. In most cases, such expenses are beyond the means of SMEs due to limited resources and restricted access to financing. This paper presents trends and challenges towards an effective data-driven decision making for organisations based on a case study of 85 SMEs, mostly from the West Midlands region of England. The work is supported as part of a 3 years ERDF (European Regional Development Funded project) in the areas of big data management, analytics and business intelligence. We present two case studies that demonstrates the potential of Digitisation, AI and Machine Learning and use these as examples to unveil challenges and showcase the wealth of current available opportunities for SMEs.

Abstract

Human preimplantation development involves extensive remodeling of RNA expression and splicing. However, its transcriptome has been compiled using short-read sequencing data, which fails to capture most full-length mRNAs. Here, we generate an isoform-resolved transcriptome of early human development by performing long- and short-read RNA sequencing on 73 embryos spanning the zygote to blastocyst stages. We identify 110,212 unannotated isoforms transcribed from known genes, including highly conserved protein-coding loci and key developmental regulators. We further identify 17,964 isoforms from 5,239 unannotated genes, which are largely non-coding, primate-specific, and highly associated with transposable elements. These isoforms are widely supported by the integration of published multi-omics datasets, including single-cell 8CLC and blastoid studies. Alternative splicing and gene co-expression network analyses further reveal that embryonic genome activation is associated with splicing disruption and transient upregulation of gene modules. Together, these findings show that the human embryo transcriptome is far more complex than currently known, and will act as a valuable resource to empower future studies exploring development.

Abstract

Purpose: Wideband phase‐sensitive inversion recovery (PSIR) late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) enables myocardial scar imaging in implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD) patients, mitigating hyperintensity artifacts. To address subendocardial scar visibility challenges, a 2D breath‐hold single‐shot electrocardiography‐triggered black‐blood (BB) LGE sequence was integrated with wideband imaging, enhancing scar‐blood contrast. Methods: Wideband BB, with increased bandwidth in the inversion pulse (0.8–3.8 kHz) and T2 preparation refocusing pulses (1.6–5.0 kHz), was compared with conventional and wideband PSIR, and conventional BB, in a phantom and sheep with and without ICD, and in six patients with cardiac devices and known myocardial injury. ICD artifact extent was quantified in the phantom and specific absorption rate (SAR) was reported for each sequence. Image contrast ratios were analyzed in both phantom and animal experiments. Expert radiologists assessed image quality, artifact severity, and scar segments in patients and sheep. Additionally, histology was performed on the sheep's heart. Results: In the phantom, wideband BB reduced ICD artifacts by 62% compared to conventional BB while substantially improving scar‐blood contrast, but with a SAR more than 24 times that of wideband PSIR. Similarly, the animal study demonstrated a considerable increase in scar‐blood contrast with wideband BB, with superior scar detection compared with wideband PSIR, the latter confirmed by histology. In alignment with the animal study, wideband BB successfully eliminated severe ICD hyperintensity artifacts in all patients, surpassing wideband PSIR in image quality and scar detection. Conclusion: Wideband BB may play a crucial role in imaging ICD patients, offering images with reduced ICD artifacts and enhanced scar detection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Currently, pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) is the gold standard in catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation (AF). However, PVI alone may be insufficient in the management of persistent AF, and complementary methods are being explored. One such method takes an anatomical approach—improving both its success rate and lesion durability may lead to improved treatment outcomes. An additional approach complementary to the anatomical one is also attracting attention, one that focuses on epicardial conduction. This involves ethanol ablation of the vein of Marshall (VOM) and can be very effective in blocking epicardial conduction related to Marshall structure; it is becoming incorporated into standard treatment. However, the pitfall of this "Marshall-PLAN", a method that combines an anatomical approach with ethanol infusion within the VOM (Et-VOM), is that Et-VOM and other line creations are not always successfully completed. This has led to cases of AF and/or atrial tachycardia (AT) recurrence even after completing this lesion set. Abstract

The adoption of data science brings vast benefits to Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) including business productivity, economic growth, innovation and job creation. Data science can support SMEs to optimise production processes, anticipate customers' needs, predict machinery failures and deliver efficient smart services. Businesses can also harness the power of artificial intelligence (AI) and big data, and the smart use of digital technologies to enhance productivity and performance, paving the way for innovation. However, integrating data science decisions into an SME requires both skills and IT investments. In most cases, such expenses are beyond the means of SMEs due to their limited resources and restricted access to financing. This paper presents trends and challenges towards effective data-driven decision making for organisations based on a 3-year long study which covered more than 85 UK SMEs, mostly from the West Midlands region of England. In particular, this study attempts to find answers to several key research questions around data science and AI adoption among UK SMEs, and the advantages of digitalisation and data-driven decision making, as well as the challenges hindering their effective utilisation of these technologies. We also present two case studies that demonstrate the potential of digitisation and data science, and use these as examples to unveil challenges and showcase the wealth of currently available opportunities for SMEs.
