Both nanopore-based DNA sequencing and CRISPR/Cas-based gene editing represent groundbreaking innovations in molecular biology and genomics, offering unprecedented insights into and tools for working with genetic information. For students, reading, editing, and even writing DNA will be part of their everyday life. We have developed a laboratory procedure that includes (i) the biosynthesis of a guide RNA for, (ii) targeting Cas9 to specifically linearize the pBR322 plasmid, and (iii) the identification of the cutting site through nanopore DNA sequencing. The protocol is intentionally kept simple and requires neither living organisms nor biosafety laboratories. We divided the experimental procedures into separate activities to facilitate customization. Assuming access to a well-equipped molecular biology laboratory, an initial investment of approximately $2,700 is necessary. The material costs for each experiment group amount to around $130. Furthermore, we have developed a freely accessible website (https://dnalesen.hs-mittweida.de) for sequence read analysis and visualization, lowering the required computational skills to a minimum. For those with strong computational skills, we provide instructions for terminal-based data processing. With the presented activities, we aim to provide a hands-on experiment that engages students in modern molecular genetics and motivates them to discuss potential implications. The complete experiment can be accomplished within half a day and has been successfully implemented by us at high schools, in teacher training, and at universities. Our tip is to combine CRISPR/Cas gene targeting with nanopore-based DNA sequencing. As a tool, we provide a website that facilitates sequence data analysis and visualization.

Winogradsky columns were invented by Sergei Winogradsky in the 1880s and have commonly been used as a microbiology classroom learning tool in K-12 and collegiate education. However, they can be challenging to examine with microscopy. We scaled down Winogradsky columns into nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) tubes and replaced the natural sediment with a transparent soil substitute toward the goal of observing the microbial growth under a bright-field microscope without column disassembly. Using this "Mini Winnie" approach, students can practice their microscopy skills while observing microbial growth inside the column after only days of incubation on the laboratory windowsill. Overall, we believe that the Mini Winnies provide a simple method for maximizing student engagement while giving them a greater understanding of how microorganisms interact in the environment.

The objective of this study is to ascertain the impact of interactive videos on web-based courses on students' technology proficiency and digital literacy levels, as well as their perceptions of this approach. To achieve this objective, the study was conducted using quasi-experimental designs, which are a type of quantitative research approach. The research group was selected using the convenience sampling method. The quantitative data gathered with the aid of data collection instruments were analyzed using dependent and independent samples t-tests. Qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis. The study's findings revealed a significant difference between the technology proficiency and digital literacy pre-test and post-test scores of the students in the experimental group. Furthermore, the findings indicated a significant difference between the technology proficiency and digital literacy scores of the groups, with the experimental group exhibiting superior performance. The results demonstrated that the use of interactive videos in web-based lessons can enhance students' technology proficiency and digital literacy levels. Therefore, the findings and results of the study will make a significant contribution to the field.

Purpose: Many students perceive plant anatomy as difficult due to the complexity of the material. Additionally, conventional teaching techniques often neglect the importance of information retention in the learning process. Therefore, this study examines the effects of Retention-Based Learning on students' learning outcomes compared to conventional learning without Retention-Based Learning. Methodology: A multiple-group time series research design was used to measure the effectiveness of Retention-Based Learning on students' learning outcomes including information retention, cognitive load, and learning achievement. Retention interventions in the Retention-Based Learning class included watching videos, identifying images and answering questions. The participants in this study were seventy-eight 10th-grade public high school students in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia, divided into two research groups. Findings: This study found that students in the experimental group had better information retention in each lesson and a significantly higher ability to process information with less mental effort and lower cognitive load than the control group. Additionally, the experimental group showed significantly higher learning achievement than the control group. These findings demonstrate the importance of maintaining information retention to maximize learning outcomes in plant anatomy lessons. Significance: This study indicates that maintaining retention can be a simple and powerful learning approach to help high school teachers teach complex material. The study highlights the significance of maintaining student retention to improve learning performance.

Exploratory data analysis (EDA), data visualization, and visual analytics are essential for understanding and analyzing complex datasets. In this project, we explored these techniques and their applications in data analytics. The case discusses Tableau, a powerful data visualization tool, and Google BigQuery, a cloud-based data warehouse that enables users to store, query, and analyze large datasets. It also explored the benefits and applications of both tools and their integration with other platforms and services. The project offers an introductory insight into Tableau's functionalities, employing a data file from the US Census Bureau via Google BigQuery.

With the development of technology, the circulation of information around the world has accelerated. Journalism has now entered social media and mobile phones and has started to accompany people everywhere. The role of the media in education helps to learn, develop and keep alive a culture, and then transfer it to new generations. Media messages prepared for educational purposes aim to educate the individual and society on certain issues. The media is integrative with publications that raise awareness of the country, state and nation, make people popular, protect and protect national values. Thanks to the developing technology, politicians benefit from the educational role of the media by using new media tools as well as traditional media. In this study, the concepts of communication and media are explained in detail. In the continuation of the study, it was tried to reveal what needs to be done about the realization of a successful corporate perception management by mentioning the importance of corporate perception management in public administration by making use of the developing technology. Using content analysis, the interviews of the President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Ersin Tatar, in the TRNC and universities in Turkey in October 2023 were examined.

The use of virtual museums in cultural transfer is an interdisciplinary approach of significant importance. Virtual museums play a crucial role in cultural transfer by digitally preserving cultural heritage. This article examines the educational role of virtual museums as a key tool in cultural transfer, particularly in the context of representing Ottoman works in virtual museums. Museums, indispensable elements of cultural transfer and education in contemporary society, have gained the opportunity to reach wider audiences by transitioning into the digital realm. In this context, the representation of Ottoman works in virtual museums and its role in cultural transfer are highlighted. Virtual museums hold great educational potential. It is well recognized that the representation of Ottoman works in virtual museums has educational effects such as expanding learning environments, facilitating access to knowledge, and increasing cultural awareness. Therefore, the representation of Ottoman works in virtual museums, especially in the field of education, is addressed. This study evaluates the role of the representation of Ottoman works in virtual museums in cultural transfer and education, thus demonstrating the educational potential of virtual museums. The research illustrates that virtual museums serve as significant tools for the preservation and dissemination of cultural heritage, and the representation of Ottoman works in virtual museums contributes to this process. Using Ferdinand de Saussure's theory of signs, signifier, signified, this study examines the representation and educational role of Ottoman works in virtual museums.

This study aims to examine the potential differences between teacher evaluations and artificial intelligence (AI) tool-based assessment systems in university examinations. The research has evaluated a wide spectrum of exams including numerical and verbal course exams, exams with different assessment styles (project, test exam, traditional exam), and both theoretical and practical course exams. These exams were selected using a criterion sampling method and were analyzed using Bland-Altman Analysis and Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) analyses to assess how AI and teacher evaluations performed across a broad range. The research findings indicate that while there is a high level of proficiency between the total exam scores assessed by artificial intelligence and teacher evaluations; medium consistency was found in the evaluation of visually based exams, low consistency in video exams, high consistency in test exams, and low consistency in traditional exams. This research is crucial as it helps to identify specific areas where artificial intelligence can either complement or needs improvement in educational assessment, guiding the development of more accurate and fair evaluation tools.

Culture shapes pupils' mathematical learning, their performances and life trajectories of participation (César, 2013a, 2013b). It also contributes to the senses they attribute to mathematical learning (Bakhtin, 1929/1981). Using collaborative work and interempowerment mechanisms facilitates knowledge appropriation (César, 2009). This is particularly important for pupils participating in minority cultures, socially undervalued and whose L1 is not the instruction language. Bi-univocal culture mediation (César, 2017b) is important regarding empowerment. We used an instrument to evaluate pupils' abilities and competencies (IACC), conceived by the "Interaction and Knowlwdge" (IK) team (Machado, 2014), and other mathematical tasks. The goal we address is to trace the differences between their approaches to problems, mathematical reasoning and solving strategies used by pupils whose L1 is ideographic (Creole, Cape Verde) or phonetic (Portuguese). We developed an intrinsic case study (Stake, 1995). The main participants are the pupils from almost 600 classes (all over Portugal and Cape Verde) who participated in the IK. The analysis of some examples illustrates that L1 shapes pupils' approaches to problems, mathematical reasoning and solving strategies. This evidence plays an important role in their access to school achievement and in teachers' understanding about how they can promote pupils' mathematical learning.

Immersive Virtual Reality (iVR) can help students visualise and explore complex chemical concepts, such as protein enzyme structures and interactions. We designed a set of collaborative iVR-based learning tasks on the interaction between a protein enzyme and its substrate. We investigated how 18 pairs (36 students) in undergraduate chemistry courses changed their understanding of enzyme-substrate interactions through iVR learning tasks. Videos of pre- and post-interviews and student-generated diagrams were analysed. Before iVR, students had abstract models of the structure of a protein enzyme or its interaction with a substrate molecule. Over 90 per cent of the students (33/36) explained enzyme-substrate interactions using simplistic lock-and-key diagrams, exclusively focusing on the shape. Although many students employed key scientific terms like activation energy in their explanations, they were unsure how enzymes lowered activation energy or how catalytic reactions occurred. After iVR, all students discussed the inadequacy of 2D diagrams for representing complex enzyme-substrate interactions. About 90 per cent of students (32/36) used concrete ideas such as electron density and orientation of reactants in the active site to explain the probability of successful interactions between the enzyme and its substrate. Our findings provide evidence of how interactive iVR learning tasks can help students explore complex molecular structures, integrate ideas, and build a concrete understanding of challenging science concepts.

Digital curricula can constrain teachers with ready-made instructional materials. The authors used Mathematics Teaching Practices (MTPs) to modify a digital curriculum to engage students in more thoughtful and meaningful lessons. In this article, the authors visit one of their third-grade classrooms, in which they used the prescriptive digital curriculum Go Math! The Go Math! curriculum uses both video and slides for instruction. In this lesson, the authors worked to develop students' understanding of the attributes of triangles, but they were not satisfied with simply using the provided curriculum. The authors realized that the students needed more interaction with the concepts, so they modified the lesson to enhance the students understanding by including the MTPs.

The ability to reason with representations is pivotal for successful learning in Organic Chemistry and is closely linked to representational competence. Given the visual nature of this discipline, this comprises competency in extracting and processing relevant visual information. With regard to the resonance concept, proficiency in identifying whether electron delocalization applies in a molecule is an essential prerequisite to using this concept in problem-solving. However, prior research shows that students struggle to recognize whether molecules profit from electron delocalization, and seldom use this concept in problem-solving. As it remains unclear how the variation of structural features affects students' consideration of resonance, this quantitative study seeks to identify characteristics regarding students' perception of electron delocalization. To this end, undergraduate students enrolled in an Organic Chemistry I course (N = 699) completed an online survey in which they had to decide on resonance stabilization for molecular structures with varying structural features. K-means cluster analysis was performed to explore patterns in students' proficiency in discerning resonance stabilization and how they relate to other performance variables (e.g., time-on-task). The results suggest pattern recognition approaches with students' attention being guided by singular structural features or structures' visual similarity to familiar patterns (i.e., allylic carbocations), with less attention to implicit features.

The current study aims to contribute to the literature on how organic chemistry students weigh various factors when predicting products of substitution and elimination reactions. This study focuses specifically on these mechanism types, as they are often the first instances where students must consider the "how" and the "why" of how reactions occur. Previous literature highlights that such reasoning can be challenging. To better support our students, it is essential to understand how they conceptualize these mechanisms. Here, we present results from an investigation into how students compare bimolecular and unimolecular substitution and elimination reactions (S[subscript N]1, S[subscript N]2, E1, E2). Students completed tasks involving case comparisons and "predict-the-product" exercises. Through the analysis of nine semi-structured interviews using coordination class theory, we found that (1) students placed a greater emphasis on the importance of the starting substrate in the outcome of a reaction, and (2) focused less on the function of the nucleophile or base in each reaction. Using coordination class theory, we identified visual features and knowledge elements that students coordinated, allowing us to create "resource graphs" that represented students' conceptualizations. These graphs helped visualize the trajectories of students' predictions by illustrating how they balanced multiple factors. We discuss implications for supporting students in distinguishing among reaction mechanisms.

Rising interest in artificial intelligence in education reinforces the demand for evidence-based implementation. This study investigates how tutor agents' physical embodiment and anthropomorphism (student-reported sociability, animacy, agency, and disturbance) relate to affective (on-task enjoyment) and cognitive (task performance) learning within an intelligent tutoring system (ITS). Data from 56 students (M = 17.75 years, SD = 2.63 years; 30.4% female), working with an emotionally-adaptive version of the ITS "Betty's Brain", were analyzed. The ITS' agents were either depicted as on-screen robots (condition A) or as both on-screen avatars and physical robots (condition B). Physical presence of the tutor agent was not significantly related to task performance or anthropomorphism, but to higher initial on-task enjoyment. Student-reported disturbance was negatively related to initial on-task enjoyment, and student-reported sociability was negatively related to task performance. While physical robots may increase initial on-task enjoyment, students' perception of certain characteristics may hinder learning, providing implications for designing social robots for education.

Previous research has established that children's experiences of language during in-person interactions (e.g. individual and cumulative experiences of structural choices) implicitly shape language learning. We investigated whether children also implicitly learn structural choices during online interactions, and whether this is affected by the visual co-presence of a partner. During an online conference call, three- and five-year-olds alternated describing pictures with an experimenter who produced active ("a cat chased the dog") and passive ("the dog was chased by a cat") prime descriptions; half the participants had video+audio calls, and half had audio-only. Children in both age groups produced more passives after passive than active primes, both immediately and with accumulating input across trials; neither effect was influenced by call format (video+audio vs audio-only). These results demonstrate that implicit grammar learning mechanisms, as evidenced by syntactic priming effects, operate during socially contingent online interactions. They also highlight the potential of online methodologies for developmental language production research.

This assignment is integrated into the generative AI unit of the Emerging Communication Technologies course. It includes step-by-step designs and reflective examples from students, highlighting the evolution of their perceptions of generative AI. The assignment uniquely focuses on understanding and raising awareness of stereotypes present in AI-generated images. Through experiential, analytical, and reflective learning, students build confidence and competence in interacting with various AI tools, acquire skills in AI-human communication and prompting, and develop critical thinking abilities to identify and mitigate stereotypes generated by AI. Courses: Emerging Communication Technologies; Human-Computer Interaction; Communication and Technology; New Media; Digital Humanity; Digital Literacy; Media Literacy. Objectives: Through these activities, students will (1) reduce fear or discomfort about interacting with generative AI, (2) familiarize themselves with popular generative AI tools, (3) understand characteristics of human-AI interaction, (4) recognize AI fallibility in producing stereotypes, and (5) think critically about identifying and preventing AI-generated stereotypes.

This paper introduces generative AI for the graphic design of student presentation aids in a university public-speaking classroom. Students learn to use generative AI as an efficient enhancement to the creative process while preserving the integrity of the content. Students' slide presentations show improvement resulting from the activity, and students report that the activity saves time and relieves stress. Courses: Public Speaking, Advanced Public Speaking, Business and Professional Communication, face-to-face and online. Objectives: Students learn how to improve the visual design of their presentation aids through use of generative AI. Students will reflect on the ethics of using AI as an enhancement to human agency and not as a replacement for it.

When educators started incorporating the letter A into the STEM acronym to form STEAM some science educators had reservations. Seen from a western, rationalistic way of knowing (Colucci-Gray et al. 2017, 23) the STEM community had detractors regarding the idea of integrating art into science. Hence, scientific language is often thought of as being limited to structured, mathematical forms, while the arts' languages are intuitive and characterized by esthetic quality (Garoian and Mathews 1996, 194). This article describes a science educator's changing beliefs regarding the need for art in STEM and how it led to the creation of an art activity that helps bridge the gap between math, science, and engineering. Specifically, students are involved in creating dioramas to NGSS- MS-LS2-2--Construct an explanation that predicts patterns of interactions among organisms across multiple ecosystems. Ratios/proportions and using a spreadsheet for accuracy and speed of calculations are additional concepts discussed within the article.

This activity prompts students to go beyond the often reductionist responses to new technologies (e.g. technological determinism) by creating a media literacy-focused infographic about the role, uses, ethical concerns, and/or impact of generative AI (e.g. ChatGPT). Sample topics have included the role of AI in specific industries (e.g. film, advertising, accounting, etc.) and media studies topics (e.g. online dating, celebrities, sports, communicating with the dead, etc.). The activity includes five one-week segments that culminate with a poster presentation session for the campus community. Successful completion of the assignment also provided students with a tangible portfolio item. Courses: This activity was developed for an introductory course in media studies. It could be modified for any course level and applied to a variety of relevant courses in communication, and media studies, among others. Objectives: After the completion of this unit, students will have gained: (1) an understanding of the approaches to new technologies (e.g. technological determinism) and critical media literacy as guiding theoretical frameworks; (2) the ability to apply these frameworks to new media innovations and specific industries; (3) improved research, synthesis, and application skills; and (4) improved skills in strategic communication, message design, and public speaking.

This ethnographic, qualitative case study empirically explores how six youth from refugee backgrounds positioned their identities through design choices in producing reaction videos--a popular YouTube genre--at school in their settlement context. Through reflexive thematic analysis, we identified three ways in which youth took ownership of how they were to be perceived by their classmates and teachers, establishing their identities in the classroom through: (a) knowledge brokering; (b) navigating gaze; and (c) playfully disrupting cohesion. The study makes a timely contribution to helping language and literacy researchers, educators, and teacher-educators better understand how digitally composing in YouTube genres such as reaction videos can be used to affirm the identities of youth from refugee backgrounds in school settings.

In recent years, language portraits (LPs) have emerged as a valuable tool for visually representing multilingual learners' linguistic repertoires. However, previous studies have primarily relied on traditional methods of inviting participants to sketch their language portraits on paper using pens and crayons. In this paper, we propose the use of digital methods to collect and analyze data on language portraits to examine the translingual practices and negotiations of meaning among multilingual individuals. By utilizing Synchronic Computer-Mediated Communication platforms, participants can actively deploy and mobilize multi-linguistic and multi-semiotic resources in lived experiences, engaging in interactive translanguaging practices. In this particular case study, data were collected through a biographic survey and a sketch of the language portraits in digital form, which were then further supported by follow-up interviews. Four participants' LPs and oral narratives during the interviews were then subjected to qualitative multimodal analysis and discourse analysis. The results revealed that these digital language portraits (DLPs) possess significant features such as digital affordance and multimodality. They tap into the translanguaging spaces that emerge from the creative and critical meaning-making process, enabling multilingual individuals to visualize their linguistic repertoires through digital visual strategies. Furthermore, it was discovered that DLPs can foster creative performance and discursive negotiations, thereby enhancing participants' expressive abilities in developing their language perceptions.

This study represents an application of the entertainment education approach utilizing aspects of arts education to deliver campus policy and protocols to a population of incoming first year students at new student orientation. Consistent with previous applications in research, these theatrical entertainment messages were combined with a post-show discussion followed by a post-show survey. Data for this study consisted of those three elements (the show, the discussion, and the survey) and we describe these data using AI-based content analyses and network modeling. We report on the recall of campus information including emergency phone numbers and on questions of campus policy regarding student behavior. For this population, we recommend a dual-pronged approach where the meaning related to the information is provided during the heightened period of audience involvement during NSO, and recall is supported through targeted resource communication in the following months and/or through first-year seminar courses. The prevalence and specificity of student responses lends toward the consideration of policies for new students related to the limitation of logistical obstacles, and multifaceted approaches to the dissemination of health-related information, and crisis response formats.

Having a deeper understanding of molecules in their structural forms allows students to grasp biochemical and general chemical concepts in a more profound manner. Through the use of visualization software, we have shown that students gain confidence and insight into the chemical workings of molecular structure and can then utilize this knowledge in its applications to societal health-related issues. In this research, we introduced students in a biochemistry class to visual molecular dynamics software and had them complete several activities. The final project consisted of three parts, including data gathering, team presentations and pitches with peer review, and a final persuasive report Each of these advanced student mastery of the molecular biochemical details while mastering a skill-set that allowed them to think creatively and apply this knowledge to a pertinent world-problem. Overwhelmingly, we found that student interest in the subject, as well as performance and confidence increased across the use of molecular visualization in the classroom. Additionally, upon close inspection, we found that such student-centered work benefitted historically marginalized students. Overall, students who can connect with course materials and embrace real-world, hands-on applications are increasing societal scientific literacy which can trickle down across decision-making and public health.

Oral care-related challenges are well documented in the autistic community. This review examined interventions designed to improve oral health in autistic individuals across the lifespan. Through a systematic process, 36 studies were identified which focused on improving home-based oral care skills and routines, and reducing fear, anxiety, and/or negative behaviors in the dental clinic. Studies incorporated preparatory interventions to support home-based hygiene activities or improve an approaching dental encounter (n = 29), most often using visual aids, and/or strategies to manage behavioral difficulties exhibited in the dental office (n = 17). Some studies used both approaches (n = 10), combining visual aids prior to a visit with behavior management in the dental office. Using an evidence-based rubric, methodological quality of most articles was only "adequate" (n = 8) or "weak" (n = 23). Findings provide preliminary support for preparatory home-based visual interventions to improve toothbrushing and/or ready patients for dental visits, and distraction or sensory-reducing interventions to improve experiences in the dental clinic. Only one study purposefully recruited autistic adults and no studies included intervention elements tailored to race/ethnicity, culture, and/or socioeconomic status. This review highlights the need for high-quality studies investigating the impact of oral care-related interventions for autistic individuals and identifies a gap in interventions for autistic adults and those from minoritized populations.

This paper examines the pedagogical integration of Virtual Microscopes (VMs) in Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs), to identify best practice and improve online pedagogy. It has captured the perspectives of 12 Health and Earth Science university teachers, through in-depth interviews, about the current integration of the VM in online teaching, benefits and challenges, and their recommendations for enhancing online and distance learning. Findings revealed that the VM has been integrated in online courses in varied ways, addressing diverse learning objectives. Teachers noted two particular challenges: (a) the need for support throughout the lifecycle of a course, and while students are using the VM, that will complement the introductory support currently provided, and (b) the design of VM learning activities that promote higher order thinking skills. Implications about the significance of engaging teachers with the process of designing online courses and using the VM to enable remote learning in cases of emergency are discussed.

Data-based instruction (DBI) is a process in which teachers use progress data to make ongoing instructional decisions for students with learning disabilities. Curriculum-based measurement (CBM) is a common form of progress monitoring, and CBM data are placed on a graph to guide decision-making. Despite the central role that graph interpretation plays in the successful implementation of DBI, relatively little attention has been devoted to investigating this skill among special education teachers. In the present study, we examined the data decisions of 32 U.S. pre-service special education teachers (29 females and 3 males). Participants viewed data presented sequentially on CBM progress graphs and used a think-aloud procedure to explain their reasoning each time they indicated they would make instructional changes. We also asked participants to make the same type of decisions in response to static CBM progress graphs depicting 10 weeks of data. Overall, there was inconsistency in pre-service teachers' responses related to "when" or "why" they would make an instructional change. Decisions were often influenced by graph-related features, such as variability in the data. Furthermore, responses suggested misunderstandings that led to premature instructional change decisions and reliance on individual data points.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to examine the education service quality factors, for online education context, that drive the brand equity of a higher education institute. In the times of emerging online education programmes by otherwise traditional institutes, assessing the service quality of educational institutions and its effect on the institute's brand represents an extant research gap. Design/methodology/approach: This study addresses the gap by empirically measuring higher education institution (HEI) service quality and explores its impact on student engagement, satisfaction and brand equity. This research analyses structured data from 250 students, through partial least squares-based structural equation modelling, to test the proposed hypotheses. Findings: Within the overall service quality of an HEI, all components of institutional service quality are found to affect student engagement strongly; however, only some dimensions of learning management system service quality do. Student engagement is found to positively impact student satisfaction which, in turn, strongly affects all elements of HEI brand equity. Originality/value: This study adds value to the extant research in higher education service quality by adding a layer of online platform service quality and offers actionable insights for HEI administrators.

In this article we consider the use of visual images to assess perceptions of plants. Using data drawn from a Swedish study we review our choices regarding the type of image used, and the responses they provoked. Furthermore, we consider these choices in the light of other studies, propose a tentative model of levels of seeing, and call for further research. In sharing our methodological challenges with the research community, we wish to contribute to current discussions in plant awareness studies. More specifically, to the development of a visual prompt item that is not explicitly connected to knowledge. Thus, the main contribution of this article is to visual research methods in relation to plant awareness studies.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to widespread changes in the ways teaching and learning take place under the pandemic. This has affected more significantly pre-service teachers, as they did not have the opportunity to experience their practicum period in a 'normal' context. Therefore, the aims of this paper are: (1) to explore how pre-service teachers experienced a period of uncertainty in teaching as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic; and (2) to explore how pre-service teachers imagined the teaching profession and the challenges they faced related to the pandemic. Results show that pre-service teachers believed that the educational relationship between teachers, the students and the subject is built through a personal relationship between teachers, students and the content to be taught. Results also demonstrate that the pandemic made it difficult for pre-service teachers to approach students and content, and create spaces of mutual trust between teacher and students.

The sharp increase in dementia and age-related memory impairments worldwide has made reminiscence-based interventions attractive. Past research is mixed with little focus on self-functioning. The aims of this study were (i) to develop and assess the implementation of a reminiscence-based intervention, Digital Life Story Books, grounded in evidence-based principles of autobiographical memory, and (ii) to evaluate its effectiveness in improving sense of self in older adults with memory difficulties. A remote reminiscence intervention, using multisensory Digital Life Story Books (DLSB), was developed. Using a short-term experimental, longitudinal design, 25 participants with memory difficulties were assigned to the DLSB condition (16 females; M = 73.96, SD = 8.8) and 23 to a Wait-List Control (16 females; M = 78.57, SD = 9.38). Informal caregivers (N = 34; M = 63.44, SD = 13.8) provided proxy-reports on the effects of the DLSB. The DLSB was successfully developed and positively evaluated by participants. In the DLSB condition, a strengthened sense of self, reflected directly in the memories selected for the DLSB was detected. No overall condition difference was detected pre- to post-therapy. The findings highlight the appeal of reminiscence activities but also the challenge of adequate measurement sensitivity to demonstrate effects.

Learning cardiac morphology largely involves spatial abilities and studies indicate benefits from innovative 3D visualization technologies that speed up and increase the learning output. Studies comparing these teaching tools and their educational output are rare and few studies include complex congenital heart defects. This study compared the effects of 3D prints, mixed reality (MR) viewing of 3D meshes and standard cardiac CT slice images on medical students' understanding of complex congenital heart defect morphology, measuring both objective level of understanding and subjective educational experience. The objective of this study was to compare morphological understanding and user experiences of 3D printed models, MR 3D visualization and axial 2D CT slices, in medical students examining morphological details in complex congenital heart defects. Medical students in the median 4th year of study (range 2nd to 6th) examined three of five different complex congenital heart defects by three different modalities: 3D printed model, MR viewed 3D mesh, and cardiac CT slices, answering a questionnaire on morphology and user experience. Time to complete task, diagnostic accuracy, and user experience data were collected and compared on group level. Task times were similar for all modalities. The percentage of correct answers was higher with MR visualization, which was also the preferred modality overall. Medical students both prefer and better understand the morphology of complex congenital heart disease with 3D models viewed using MR, without spending more time than with 3D prints or 2D CT images.

Introduction: As higher education continues to prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), cognitive/behavioral neuroscience and other physiologically based psychology courses may face challenges incorporating DEI issues into the curriculum relative to other subfields of psychology. Statement of the Problem: Instructors of these courses may believe that their discipline is more objective than other psychology subfields, or may simply be unsure where to insert discussion of DEI issues into their course material. Literature Review: There is a substantial evidence regarding both the fallacy of total scientific objectivity and how structural inequalities can impact brain structure and function in historically marginalized populations. Teaching Implications: I discuss where and how in the neuroscience curriculum instructors can implement relevant discussion of DEI issues, as well as provide practical suggestions for how to increase belongingness for historically marginalized students, including open educational resource lecture slides and a critical-thinking assignment. Conclusion: Excluding DEI content from neuroscience courses harms our students and perpetuates the myth of total scientific objectivity, so it is imperative that faculty include DEI discussions in neuroscience-based courses.

Fractions are an important concept used throughout advanced mathematical ideas and everyday life. Students need a solid understanding of fraction concepts, such as magnitude, equivalence, and operations. However, many students, including students with learning disabilities (LD) in mathematics, struggle with fractions. In this article, the use of multiple representations are discussed to support and teach fraction concepts to students with LD in mathematics. Multiple representations to include manipulatives, drawings, and numbers lines. Throughout the article, the use of explicit instruction to teach students with LD in mathematics how to use multiple representations to understand and solve fraction problems will be presented.

Extant literature has preliminarily confirmed the potential benefits of holographic projections for educational purposes. Yet, students' experiences of learning by holographic projection have rarely been addressed. The main purpose of this study was therefore to explore students' conceptions of and approaches to learning by holographic projection. A holographic projection system was devised to assist students in learning the concept of lunar phases. This study also investigated the relationships between students' conceptions and approaches, and determined if there were any variations based on students' learning gains. Phenomenographic analysis was adopted to analyze 30 university students from Taiwan, and a multiple-choice conceptual test was conducted to assess their learning achievements. The main findings indicated that students with conceptions of learning by holographic projection as increasing the presence of a scene or mapping 2D images to 3D structures tended to adopt surface approaches, such as only observing the changes presented in the holographic projection, repetitively operating the system functions without intended purposes, or simply following the instruction guidelines to meet the minimal requirements. However, this study unexpectedly found that students who utilized surface approaches had significantly higher learning gains on the conceptual test than their counterparts did.

This study tested the potential of a technological intervention procedure for promoting letter-naming and initial-phoneme detection skills among preschoolers at risk for Specific Learning Disorder. The study rational is based on evidence for paired associated learning of visual-verbal stimuli, integrated with the use of a tangible technological device (educational floor robot) as means for promoting letter knowledge. Two intervention groups (N = 60) participated. The intervention lasted for eight sessions of phonological training; each dedicated to one target letter. Participants were asked to navigate the robot's path from a current stopping point to the next according to phonological information processing. Both groups went through the same procedure, but using a different type of mat (one with and one without a visual form of the letter). A control group (N = 30) of at-risk preschoolers received no intervention except for their preschool educational routine. We found that children who participated in phonological training with linkage to the visual form of the letter scored higher in post-intervention tests. Among other proposed explanations, we mention the advantages of using a tangible robot and seemingly three-dimensional letters, along with the tendency to consider visual features while processing language stimulus among children with dyslexia.

Although student covariation reasoning has been explored in depth to improve understanding of the correspondence between variables, research has focused on studying existing reasoning about variables in Cartesian representations. The working method had a qualitative approach, with a descriptive exploratory scope, the spontaneous representations that the participants evidenced under the level of covariational reasoning of the variables present in three contextualized situations were explored, posed to a population of third-grade middle school students. The students argued with concrete and abstract drawings the general behavior of the variables. At low levels of reasoning they used pictorial representations, at higher levels they used graphical diagrams and tables. The exploratory study shows a relationship between the type of spontaneous representations and the student's level of covariational reasoning, as well as the rigor of the description of the problem.

The tradition of studies involving the combinatorial approach to recurring numerical sequences has accumulated a few decades of tradition, and several problems continue to attract the interest of mathematicians in several countries. This work specifically discusses the Fibonacci, Pell, and Jacobsthal sequences, focusing on Mersenne sequences. The often-used definition of board involves considering how to fill a specific regular surface--the board--with a limited quantity of regularly shaped tiles. On the other hand, an analogous problem can be generalized and exemplifies current research developments. Finally, the examples covered constitute unexpected ways of exploring visualization and other skills in mathematics teachers' learning, consequently inspiring them for their teaching context.

In line with the philosophy of inclusion and various legislative instruments which encourage 'education for all', ODL institutions have made provision for sign language interpreters (SLIs) to facilitate participation for deaf students. Although, some studies have examined issues of virtual learning and the ODL programme; a paucity of studies assessing virtual sign language interpretation (VSLI) in remote educational activities is evident. Therefore, a research study was instituted to probe into perceived enablers and or constraints of providing VSLI during the Covid-19 lockdown in Nigeria. Based on the Job Demand Resources Model, two research questions were raised and answered in this paper. This study adopted the qualitative research design and seven SLIs who had participated in virtual teaching and learning activities during the lockdown were purposively selected to participate in the study. Semi-structured interviews were used for data collection, and the data collected were coded and analysed thematically through using an iterative process. Government policies and the empathetic nature of SLIs were found to be enablers of VSLI, while four themes, namely epileptic power supply; internet connectivity; lack of institutional support and the comprehensibility of deaf students who attended remote lectures were found to serve as barriers to effective and efficient VSLI. Based on the findings, appropriate recommendations were made.

This study aimed to discover the factors affecting the acceptance and adoption of Tiktok platform among Palestinians through the Lens of Diffusion of Innovation Theory. The study sought to research how Tiktok app has diffused among the Palestinian users, and discover the characteristics of Tiktok platform that affect its adoption among them, in addition to discover the benefits that Palestinian users are gaining from Tiktok adoption. The study also sought to identify the reasons that derive Palestinian users to prefer Tiktok to other platforms. This study used the qualitative methodology and utilized semi-structured interviews to accomplish the goals of the research and answer its questions. These interviews were based on a pre-established set of questions that were asked to all respondents. Semi- structured interviews were chosen because they flexible and give the opportunity to ask follow-up questions to delve more deeply into topics addressed. Ten interviews done with diverse Palestinian Tiktok users to discover the characteristics and determinants that motivate them to use and adopt Tiktok and reveal the reasons that may derive users to prefer other platforms to use. After interviews analyzing, the study revealed that users got to know the Tiktok platform in various ways, including YouTube ads, and the recommendation of close friends and relatives to use the platform. The majority of interviewees cleared that the most important characteristic that encouraged them to adopt and use the application is its ease of use, as well as the fact that it is free application supports the Arabic language and doesn't need a prior experience to use. According to the results, the interviewees believe that there are many advantages to utilize and implement the application, such as passing the time by watching quick videos with a variety of subjects.

This quantitative study assessed infographics' perceptions, preferences, and effectiveness as a learning tool among Pakistani undergraduate medical students. The research focused on understanding the impact of infographics on knowledge acquisition, comprehension of complex medical concepts, and bridging the gap between theoretical learning and clinical practice. The study utilised a self-evaluated questionnaire developed through a meticulous literature review, self-evaluation, and expert input. The questionnaire covered demographics, perceptions, preferences, effectiveness in knowledge acquisition, impact on understanding complex medical concepts, and linking theoretical learning to clinical practice. The research was conducted at Shahida Islam Medical College, Lodhran, Punjab, Pakistan, and involved undergraduate medical students across various academic years. Data collection occurred between November 10 and November 30, 2023, with 229 participants. Quantitative analysis was conducted using SPSS, involving one-sample t-test, paired samples t-test, independent samples t-test, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression analysis to address specific hypotheses. Findings indicate a strong positive perception and preference for infographics among undergraduate medical students. Infographics were perceived as effective in enhancing knowledge acquisition, positively impacting the understanding of complex medical concepts, and bridging the gap between theoretical learning and clinical practice. Statistical analyses supported these perceptions, demonstrating significant relationships and explaining variance in students' perceptions and knowledge acquisition. This study highlights the substantial role of infographics as valuable tools in medical education, emphasising their positive impact on undergraduate medical students' learning experiences. The findings support the integration of infographics into medical curricula to enhance knowledge acquisition, comprehension, and application in real-life clinical settings.

This ethnographic multiple-case study examines how undergraduate students are socialized into the disciplinary norms, values, and practices of a geoscience course at a Canadian university. Transcending logocentric assumptions about academic discourse, this article advances a broader domain of inquiry----"multimodal academic discourse socialization"----which foregrounds the polysemiotic nature of academic socialization. This approach examines not only linguistic but also a wider range of semiotic resources, including gestural, visual, material, and spatial ones, among others. To understand geoscientists' disciplinary norms, values, and communicative practices, ethnographic data (classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, course-related artefacts) were thematically analysed. Focal students' geoscience poster presentation performances were also analysed using multimodal interaction analysis to scrutinize micro-level instantiations of disciplinary practices. Findings highlight how students were socialized into geoscience 'observations and interpretations' through a recurrent multimodal classroom activity, which was also reflected in micro-level multimodal practices enacted in students' geoscience poster presentations. This study emphasizes that multimodal enactments constitute a crucial dimension of disciplinary practices and values connected with learning to think, view, and represent knowledge as geoscientists.

U.S. national data indicate that approximately 90% of rural students with a reading disability read at or below basic levels of reading proficiency. A growing body of research demonstrates that the ability to make inferences is essential for reading comprehension but particularly difficult for students with reading disabilities. Compounding matters, rural special educators often have limited resources available to support students with reading disabilities, largely served in general education classrooms. In this Practice in Action article, we support rural special educators who must innovatively collaborate with general education teachers to ensure high quality and specialized reading instruction and support inclusive and equitable learning environments by (a) defining inferencing, (b) reviewing College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards that support inferencing, (c) discussing the inference skills of students with or at-risk for reading disabilities, (d) outlining components of effective inference instruction, and (e) offering recommendations for how to teach inferencing using a graphic organizer.

This systematic review synthesizes the literature (involving 62 empirical studies) regarding the effectiveness of cognitive linguistics-inspired language pedagogies (CL-ILPs) on second language (L2) learning. It begins with an overview of the main theoretical tenets of cognitive linguistics followed by a description of the data selection, coding, and analysis. Then, besides noting a sharp increase of research on CL-ILPs in the past 20 years, the review presents four main findings: (a) While various language features have been taught in CL-ILPs, the teaching targets of CL-ILPs have been mainly low-schematic constructions, such as phrasal verbs and prepositions, but a few recent studies have explored the teaching of clause- or sentence-level structures including conditional clauses, (b) conceptual metaphor, cognitive grammar, construction grammar, and cognitive semantics have been the main guiding cognitive linguistics theories applied in language teaching, and the hallmark teaching practices of CL-ILPs include the use of technology-supported or technology-delivered visuals, schemas, and diagrams; embodied activities; and group and/or pair work, (c) methodologies used in CL-ILP research have become increasingly sophisticated, and (d) CL-ILPs have been found to be effective in 93.5% (i.e., 58) of the 62 reviewed studies covering learners of different age groups, first languages, and learning contexts. These findings are discussed to uncover insights concerning CL-ILP research. Pedagogical implications and future research directions are also discussed.

Dialectical thinking is a way of discussing and analyzing things from different viewpoints to reach a solution. It is often taught in language courses by conducting argumentation activities. However, without providing effective strategies or tools, learners generally encounter difficulties in structuring their viewpoints during the argumentation process. To solve this problem, this study proposed dialectical constructivist scaffolding-based argumentation mapping (DCS-AM), which integrates a structured, four-stage process to support students' dialectical thinking and oral and dialogical argumentation complexity. The argumentation map refers to a visualized tool that enables learners to structure their viewpoints for making arguments. A quasi-experiment was conducted in an English as a Foreign Language course. A total of 26 students were in the DCS-AM group, while 22 students were in the conventional constructivist scaffolding-based argumentation mapping (CS-AM) group, which adopted a more conventional format, emphasizing direct discussion and teacher-led knowledge transmission. The experimental results found that students in the DCS-AM group exhibited significantly better dialectical thinking than those in the CS-AM group. Also, an epistemic network analysis (ENA) of oral and dialogical argumentation revealed that students in the DCS-AM group frequently developed more complex argumentation than those in the CS-AM group in terms of the structural component and discourse activity, including the process of students' dialectical thinking that was found in both groups. This finding shows that technology-supported dialectical constructivist scaffolding can help students improve their dialectical thinking and argumentation skills.

Mathematics education is compulsory in most secondary curriculums around the globe and is a critical discipline among the STEM subjects. Therefore, as a subject that is highly practical in multiple fields and curriculum subjects, developing mathematical instructional approaches that enhance mathematics education is necessary. This study investigated the influence of mathematical Internet memes in secondary mathematics education. The mixed method research approach was applied, and data collection techniques used were observation, achievement tests, questionnaires, and focus groups. The results revealed that integrating mathematical Internet memes in mathematics classrooms enhances students' motivation and engagement. Moreover, the study revealed that mathematical Internet memes provide similar feedback as traditional formative assessment and, therefore, a viable alternative tool for formative assessment. The study further showed that integrating mathematical Internet memes has no significant impact on learners' performance in mathematics. However, results from the focus group indicate that students believe that integrating mathematical Internet memes in mathematics classrooms can potentially improve their performance in mathematics.

Children in P-12 schools are growing up in racially tumultuous times, despite the promises of desegregation since "Brown vs. Board of Education." Multicultural education, included under the umbrella of equity, diversity, and inclusion, is under attack and illegal in an increasing number of school districts. Advanced placement in Black history and psychology courses and the use of diverse literature written for children and young adults have been banned by many school districts nationally. Educators are being threatened, sanctioned, reprimanded, and fired. Despite this, some teachers stand steadfast in their commitment to pedagogies that use authentic, high-quality literature about and by minoritized scholars. In this publication, I discuss the importance of gifted and talented education (GATE) students being taught Black history and culture that centers diverse literature that recognizes, respects, and celebrates similarities and differences within and across cultures including ethnicity, nationality, age, gender, gender expression, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, physical, cognitive and emotional ability, geographic location, language, and religion. Many GATE students are avid readers and like other students, they benefit from an education that includes diverse literature. Further, I use Racial Pride, Equity, Achievement, and Liberation (REAL) to underscore the monumental need for multicultural literature due to its multitude of benefits to Black and other minoritized students. In other words, children's literature can and must be decolonized, which is supported by Bishop's metaphor of "mirrors, windows, and sliding glass doors."
