Stretchable electronic circuits can seamlessly conform to irregular and dynamic surfaces with high integration. However, current stretchable configurations typically have limited stretchability due to the lack of robust connections between soft interconnects and rigid electronics. Here, we printed highly stretchable metal–polymer conductors on thermoplastic elastomers as interconnects. We developed electronic vests with porous surfaces for rigid electronics and introduced polyester hot-melt adhesives to strengthen connections between soft interconnects and rigid electronics. After thermal bonding, the adhesive penetrates the porous surface of electronic vests, creating a mechanical interlock and providing an adhesion force of 8.34 N/cm for the connection (3× higher than conductive adhesives). Thus, rigid electronics of different sizes and different pin counts can form strong connections to soft interconnects, achieving a maximum strain tolerance of ~700% (10× higher than conductive adhesives). Early modern materials are not well represented in dye and mordant analyses despite extensive documentary evidence suggesting the enormous demand for coloured fabrics, even among those below the elite. Non-wovens likewise receive less attention than woven textiles despite their ubiquity in the early modern historical record. Knitted garments, in particular, have rarely been subjected to dye analysis. One garment is noteworthy for its colourfulness, despite not being visible in formal wear. Men throughout society wore knitted undergarments known as waistcoats from the late sixteenth century. The waistcoats under investigation here are from the collections at the London Museum and the Grimsthorpe and Drummond Castle Trust, Scotland. They are made of silk and are now a pale blue-green colour. Small samples were taken from each and subjected to a series of analytical techniques: micro-Raman spectroscopy, UV-Vis microspectrofluorimetry, and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled with a mass spectrometer. Using this protocol, it was possible to characterise the dyes in the waistcoats by ensuring that maximum information was gleaned from a sample before it was exhausted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study focuses on improving human thermal comfort in a high-temperature outdoor environment using vests with a radiative cooling coating. The effects of coating thickness on the radiative cooling performance were first evaluated, and an optimal thickness of 160 μm was achieved. Then, six subjects were recruited to evaluate the thermal comfort in two scenarios: wearing the vest with radiative cooling coatings, and wearing the standard vest. Compared with the standard vest, the coated vest decreases the maximum temperature at the vest inner surface and the outer surface by 5.54 °C and 4.37 °C, respectively. The results show that thermal comfort is improved by wearing radiative cooling vests. With an increase of wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT), the improving effects tend to decline. A significant improvement in human thermal comfort is observed at a WBGT of 26 °C. Specifically, the percentage of thermal sensation vote (TSV) wearing the cooling vest in the range of 0 to 1 increases from 29.2% to 66.7% compared with that of the untreated vest. Time series forecasting is a challenging task with applications in a wide range of domains. Auto-regression is one of the most common approaches to address these problems. Accordingly, observations are modelled by multiple regression using their past lags as predictor variables. We investigate the extension of auto-regressive processes using statistics which summarise the recent past dynamics of time series. The result of our research is a novel framework called VEST, designed to perform feature engineering using univariate and numeric time series automatically. The proposed approach works in three main steps. First, recent observations are mapped onto different representations. Second, each representation is summarised by statistical functions. Finally, a filter is applied for feature selection. We discovered that combining the features generated by VEST with auto-regression significantly improves forecasting performance in a database composed by 90 time series with high sampling frequency. However, we also found that there are no improvements when the framework is applied for multi-step forecasting or in time series with low sample size. VEST is publicly available online. This study examines how four key French newspapers that vary in their positions and outreach, (Le Monde—central leftist, Le Figaro—central rightist, L'Humanité—leftist, and La Croix— Catholic) covered the Yellow Vests (YV) movement. Specifically, it examines how the newspapers vary in their use of positive and negative frames, sources, and tone towards the YV protests during a six-month period. Analyses of frames reveal that the most prevalent across all newspapers was the legitimising frame (positive), and the least used was the delegitimising frame (negative). Additionally, Le Monde and Le Figaro shared slightly similar results of negatively framing the events in just more than half of their coverage despite their distinct political leanings. Several differences were also found between L'Humanité and the remaining publications; while official sources were the most used sources by Le Monde, La Croix, and Le Figaro, L'Humanité relied mostly on YV sources and presented the most overwhelmingly positive tone toward the YV movement. These results lend support to some perceived public concerns over the critical portrayal of the YV protests and overreliance on official narratives in the French press but show that significant disparities remain in the news coverage among newspapers with different ideological orientations. In the early twentieth century, traditional handicraft was challenged by the latest technology in China. It is reflected by ethnic costumes combining new and old, as in the waistcoat of this study. This waistcoat made at Gyalrong Tibetan area in Sichuan, China, displays unique local features in terms of its brilliant colors and comprehensive craftsmanship. This study employs techniques such as optical microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope and high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry to investigate various aspects of this waistcoat, including its fabrics and dyes. The results showed that the waistcoat was primarily made of cotton and silk, with a bamboo paper layer, and that silk as well as twisted gold and silver threads were employed for the embroidery. Various embroidery techniques were applied, with patterns, color combinations, and characteristics being consistent with those of Tibetan and Shu (蜀) embroidery. In terms of dyeing technology, a wide range of colors were achieved through multi-step dyeing processes using natural dye stuffs like pagoda bud, and synthetic dyes like magenta. The perception of fish locomotion is important for understanding their adaptive behaviors and ethological characteristics. However, the main strategy used for extracting fish attitudes involves the use of a vision-based monitoring system, which is limited in its range of observation and cannot perform tracking for long times. Here, we report the use of a wearable tagging electronic device, referred to as an underwater vest, to capture the surrounding flow field disturbances triggered by swimming or momentary postural changes. All of these goals were achieved by integrating a pair of pseudocapacitive pressure-sensing units and a flexible circuit board. Notably, additional conditions, such as variable hydraulic pressures and minimal changes in fish posture, require high stability and sensitivity of the sensing units. Thus, hybrid hydrogel electrodes were developed through cross-linking MXene with holey-reduced graphene oxide nanosheets and further modification with 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide ionic liquids, which increased the interfacial capacitance and long-term interfacial activity of the MXene. Consequently, the sensing unit exhibited ultrahigh sensitivity (Smax~136,207 kPa−1) in an aquatic environment for 60 days and superior high-pressure resolution (10 Pa) within a wide working range of 1 MPa. Ultimately, an underwater vest integrated with such sensing units clearly distinguished and recorded fish locomotion. We believe that the designed device may open avenues in flow field monitoring and ocean current detection and provide new insights into the development of sensitive underwater tagging. This study compared the effectiveness of five commercially available cooling vests using three distinct thermal manikin test protocols. In addition, the constraints associated with each test protocol were elucidated, facilitating the identification of suitable evaluation methods for the different cooling vests. The cooling performances of the vests were evaluated using three thermal manikin test scenarios, incorporating the adaptations from Ciuha et al. (Ergonomics 64:625–639, 2021) and ASTM F2371-16, along with a modified protocol simulating the hot and humid weather in a South Korean summer. The results revealed substantial variations in the cooling performance across different test protocols, highlighting the importance of carefully selecting thermal manikin test methods. Moreover, the specific cooling vests exhibited immeasurable performance in certain test methods, which presents the limitations inherent in each testing scenario. For example, when evaluated with a non-sweating thermal manikin, the air-cooling vests exhibited the worst cooling performance, showing an average cooling rate of 1.0 W and cooling durations of five minutes. In contrast, the same vests demonstrated superior performance when assessed using the ASTM F2371-16 method, revealing an effective cooling rate of 114.8 W and sustained cooling durations exceeding eight hours. These results emphasize the lack of a one-size-fits-all evaluation method for cooling vests and the need for accessible guidelines to inform decision-makers aiming to enhance workplace safety and comfort. Wearable resistance (WR) and weighted vests (WV) can be used in almost all training conditions to enhance sprint performance; however, positioning and additional mass are different in WV and WR strategies, affecting performance and kinematics differently. We aimed to systematically review the literature, searching for intervention studies that reported the acute or chronic kinematic and performance impact of WV and WR and comparing them. We analyzed Pubmed, Embase, Scopus, and SPORTDiscuss databases for longitudinal and cross-over studies investigating sprint performance or kinematics using an inverse-variance with a random-effect method for meta-analysis. After the eligibility assessment, 25 studies were included in the meta-analysis. Cross-over WR and WV studies found significantly higher sprint times and higher ground contact times (CT) compared to unloaded (UL) conditions. However, WR presented a lower step frequency (SF) compared to UL, whereas WV presented a lower step length (SL). Only one study investigated the chronic adaptations for WR, indicating a superiority of the WR group on sprint time compared to the control group. However, no difference was found chronically for WV regarding sprint time, CT, and flight time (FT). Our findings suggest that using WV and WR in field sports demonstrates overload sprint gesture through kinematic changes, however, WR can be more suitable for SF-reliant athletes and WV for SL-reliant athletes. Although promising for chronic performance improvement, coaches and athletes should carefully consider WV and WR use since there is no supporting evidence that WV or WR will impact sprint performance, CT, and FT. Organizational research has increasingly recognized violence as an instrument for achieving compliance and maintaining the existing order. However, resisters tend to be portrayed as powerless in the face of this violence or engaging in hopeless acts of resistance. In comparison, by examining the context of violent protests, this paper discusses how activists can endure and use violence as part of their resistance. I build on a 15-month ethnography of the gilets jaunes (yellow vest) movement to illuminate the absorptive resisting work involved in deploying resistance to and through violence. This absorptive resisting work included reducing the repressive effects of violent protests and embracing those effects to generate symbolic and discursive resources against police violence, as well as including violent protest tactics in ways that regenerated those resources. Ultimately, my findings reveal that this absorptive work allowed resisters to withstand violent protests in the short term and reframe them in the long term. To assess halo vest applications for type II and III odontoid fractures and to ascertain the radiological and clinical outcomes of this approach. Methods: A cross-sectional retrospective study was conducted by reviewing the medical charts of selected patients having type II and III odontoid fractures who underwent halo vest treatment at the King Saud Medical City Orthopaedic Department. Radiographic evaluations for the cervical spine (anterior-posterior, lateral, and open-mouth views) were used. Computed tomography scans were used to delineate the extent of the fracture and to measure the magnitude of displacement, the degree of the angulation, the vertebrae involved, and the fracture type. Results: A total of 45 patients with odontoid fractures (55.6% of the patients with type II odontoid fractures and 44.4% of patients with type III) received halo vest treatment. In the present study, in type II odontoid fractures, union was achieved in 15.6% of patients, 28.9% of patients had malunion and 11.1% had nonunion. In type III odontoid fractures, union cases comprised 15.6% of patients, while malunion cases accounted for 28.9% of patients and nonunion cases were found in 4.4% of the patients. Conclusion: The halo vest management for type II and III odontoid fracture requires a prolonged course of cervical immobilisation. Multiple factors contribute to the alteration of the management protocol, patient adherence, and difficulties related to HV, and a significant rate of reduction loss ultimately results in malunion or nonunion. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the subjective acceptability and physiological response of an inflatable vest as a wearable device to stimulate calming effects. Methods: A Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) was used as a subjective measurement and an electroencephalogram (EEG) as an objective/physiological measurement. Results: The results showed that the subjective scores of 30 male participants rated the prototype as an 'excellent' device, with an average score of 81. An increase in the theta (4-8 Hz) frequency band was the most noticeable change in EEG, which represented the calming effect behavior experienced in 64% of all participants. After the Battle of Stalingrad, Soviet forces moved towards the Sea of Azov and the Crimean Peninsula. Therefore, the German forces in the Black Sea devised plans to strengthen defensive capabilities. Among other things, the German 4th Air Fleet ordered the 8th Air Corps to plan the protection of convoys in the western Black Sea and the prevention of Soviet landings on the coasts. The new plans also included the participation of secondary allies – Romania and Bulgaria – with various air units. During March-May 1943, German-Romanian discussions and negotiations took place to materialize air collaboration in the west of the Black Sea. Finally, it was decided that Romania would participate with seven squadrons in the joint effort, especially in the Crimean Peninsula. [Objective] Combined with ecological models and vegetation indices, the effects of land use change on habitat quality in Kashgar region were studied at regional scale, providing theoretical basis for land resource management and habitat quality improvement for sustainable development in arid regions. [ Method] The habitat quality module of In VEST ( Integrated valuation of environmental services and trade offs) model was used to study the habitat quality changes in Kashgar region and analyze the impact of land use changes on habitat quality. The applicability of the In VEST model in the northwest arid zone was verified in combination with vegetation indices. [ Result] The mean value of habitat quality in the study area from 2000 to 2020 was 0. 47 - 0. 49, which was generally in the poor grade, and the habitat quality decreased year by year; The spatial distribution of habitat quality and habitat degradation was closely related to human activities, and the habitat quality grade was consistent with the distribution of land use. The quality of the habitat was correspondingly poorer in more intensive human-induced patterns of land use. The spatial distribution of habitat quality and habitat degradation was closely related to human activities. Habitat quality results from the model runs were strongly consistent in spatial distribution with normalized difference vegetation index ( NDVI) and leaf area index ( LAI) trends, and less consistent with net primary production ( NPP) of vegetation. A multichannel soft X-ray (SXR) array has been developed to measure the electron temperature in the Versatile Experiment Spherical Torus (VEST). To estimate electron temperature using the two-filter method applied to SXR intensity, we designed a pinhole camera that has two photodiode arrays with different metallic filters. We also adopted a filter wheel and tested various filter parameters to find the optimal filter set. Through tests, the combination of aluminum and beryllium was found to be the most suitable for the current experimental conditions in VEST. The filtered SXR signals were acquired with a low-noise preamplifier, exhibiting sufficient signal-to-noise ratios for electron temperature estimation based on the intensity ratio of two signals obtained with different filters. The estimated electron temperature from the developed two-filter SXR array showed reasonably matched levels and consistent trends with Thomson scattering measurements. Seventeenth-century knitted-silk waistcoats have mystified dress historians for years since little is known about how these intricately patterned knitted garments were worn or used. This paper documents the examination and research of a seventeenth-century woman's knitted-silk waistcoat from the Burrell Collection, Glasgow Museums, Scotland. This waistcoat, acquired by the museum in 1937, is knit in silk yarns and illustrates the impressive craftsmanship of seventeenth-century knitting techniques. In documenting the close study of this seventeenth-century waistcoat, this research report shows that this garment was significantly altered for sale prior to the acquisition into the Burrell Collection and serves to contribute to knowledge of early modern knitting techniques. This essay asks whether poetry can articulate the experience of maternal loss, paying particular attention to questions of form. Focusing on two British poetry collections, Rebecca Goss's Her Birth (2013) and Karen McCarthy Woolf's An Aviary of Small Birds (2014), I argue that the contemporary elegy is currently being reshaped to explore the grief of losing a baby, and to bear witness to a life briefly lived. Drawing on Caroline Levine's emphasis on the affordances of form, the essay first examines these elegies' aural qualities thorugh the motif of the echo. Next I attend to the shaping of the poems, and how their word placement gives weight to the experience of baby loss. Participatory democracy and public consultations are increasingly being used to shape public policy or resolve political issues. In France, the Grand Débat was launched in early 2019 as a democratic response to the Yellow Vests movement, a massive grassroots social protest. With more than 500,000 participants, the Grand Débat platform was interpreted as a popular success by the government and the media, but little is known about which citizens expressed their opinions online. Although participants on the platform were anonymous and only answered public policy questions, we are able to infer their support for the Yellow Vests movement by using a second platform (a Facebook app) that asks similar questions as well as support for the Yellow Vests. We find that a large majority of participants in the Grand Débat did not support the Yellow Vests movement, in contrast to the general population at the time. This is evidence of a strong self-selection of participants on political grounds, resulting in a biased representation of French public opinion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Study design: Randomized experimental study. Objective: Compared to able-bodied people, patients with paraplegia due to thoracic spinal cord injury (SCI) are at an increased risk of heat illnesses during exercise due to impaired thermoregulatory responses. To overcome this limitation, we investigated the performance of three phase change material (PCM) cooling vests of different melting temperatures (Eijsvogels, #49) and coverage area of the trunk. Methods: Sixteen participants were divided into three groups according to their injury level. All were tested for V20 full vest (20°C Tm, 75% coverage). Mid-thoracic and high-thoracic groups were tested for V14 vest (14°C Tm, 75% coverage). The mid-thoracic group was tested for V20 half vest (20°C Tm, 50% coverage). The participants performed a 30-min arm-crank exercise followed by a recovery period inside a controlled hot climatic chamber. The heart rate, segmental skin (Tskin), and core temperature (Tcore) values were recorded, and subjective questionnaires were taken. Results: Compared to no vest (NV) test, all the vests showed an effective decrease in Tskin values of the trunk. However, the decrease in Tskin was not enough to induce a significant decrease in Tcore in all three groups. Mid-thoracic and low-thoracic groups showed a reduction in the increasing Tcore by the end of the exercise and recovery period. Finally, the level of thermal comfort was enhanced for the three groups. Conclusion: The effectiveness of cooling vests for persons with paraplegia is dependent on injury level and thus the ratio of sensate to insensate skin. Among the many criticisms carried by the Yellow Vests movement, criticisms related to representative government as a mode of exercising power occupy a prominent place and find resonance within the broader contemporary crisis of representative democracy. In the face of this crisis, the Yellow Vests movement has put forward many alternative propositions for direct democracy. This contribution focuses on the local experiment of assembly direct democracy that has taken place in the municipality of Commercy, a town in the Meuse region of Eastern France, from the beginning of the Yellow Vests movement to the municipal elections of March 2020. The contribution studies the specific strategy the movement adopted, that of running for elections to give power to the assembly that gathers the town residents. As the movement created a form of direct democracy – the assembly – to mark its opposition to representative democracy, and then used the paradigmatic mechanism of representative democracy – the elections – to give power to the assembly, it enables an understanding of how a movement navigated the dialectical relationship between representative and direct democracy in the framework of a libertarian municipalist electoral strategy and the tensions that have arisen in the process. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the effect of re-warm-up (RWUP) activities consisting of three sets of 15-m sprints with weighted vests on 20-m sprint performance after the break. Methods: Using a randomized, and counterbalanced cross-over design, twenty U15 elite soccer players performed four RWUP trials which consisted of 15-min of passive rest (control: CONT), 3 × 15-m sprint (RW0%), sprinting with a vest-loaded at 5% of body-mass (BM) (RW5%), sprinting with a 10% BM vest (RW10%). The 3-min RWUP protocols started 10-min after the commencement of the 15-min between halves break and concluded 2-min before its end. During each testing session, the participant’s RPE scores, and 20-m sprint performance were registered before the first half, and at the end of the break of the simulated match-play. Results: Significant time effects [F (1.72) = 54.37, d = 1.88, p < 0.001; F (1.72) = 9.07, d = 0.77, p = 0.003], and condition effects [F (3.72) = 11.81, d = 1.53, p < 0.001; F (3.72) = 7.36, d = 1.21, p = 0.003] were observed for RPE scores and 20-m sprint performance, respectively. Significant condition-by-time interactions were found for RPE scores (p < 0.003, d = 0.54), and 20-m sprint performance (p < 0.002, d = 0.70). Contrast analysis showed significantly higher RPE scores (p < 0.001, d = 1.55), and improved 20-m sprint performance (p = 0.0004, d = 1.19) in the RW10% condition compared to all other conditions. Conclusion: Sprinting for 3-min with a 10% body-mass vest resulted in the highest RPE scores and the most substantial enhancements in 20-m sprint performance. Participants in trail running races must carry their equipment throughout the race. This additional load modifies running biomechanics. Novel running powermeters allow further analyses of key running metrics. This study aims to determine the acute effects of running with extra weights on running power generation and running kinematics at submaximal speed. Fifteen male amateur trail runners completed three treadmill running sessions with a weighted vest of 0-, 5-, or 10% of their body mass (BM), at 8, 10, 12, and 14 km·h−1. Mean power output (MPO), leg spring stiffness (LSS), ground contact time (GCT), flight time (FT), step frequency (SF), step length (SL), vertical oscillation (VO), and duty factor (DF) were estimated with the Stryd wearable system. The one-way ANOVA revealed higher GCT and MPO and lower DF, VO, and FT for the +10% BM compared to the two other conditions (p < 0.001) for the running speeds evaluated (ES: 0.2–7.0). After post-hoc testing, LSS resulted to be higher for +5% BM than for the +10% and +0% BM conditions (ES: 0.2 and 0.4). Henri Corbine is a French philosopher who he connected Husserl's phenomenology with Islamic philosophy, especially the wisdom of Sheikh Eshraq and Mulla Sadra. The discontinuous imaginal universe that resulted from this connection, it is a purgatory world in which events are placed between two material and imaginary worlds. Among the texts that can be examined with the discontinuous imaginal universe, is the story "Sorena and the Fire Vest" by Muslim Naseri, whose story is included in the category of children's and adolescent literature. The story "Soerna and the Fire Vest" is a fantasy story whose subject is surreal and at the same time, it is full of freshness and dynamism of the image and the result of the author's creative mind and it has many similarities and similarities with the features of the discontinuous imaginal universe. The main goal of this research is to investigate the discontinuous imaginal universe in the story "Soerna and the Fire Vest". Therefore, in the present research, the phenomenology of Henry Corbine and the characteristics of the discontinuous imaginal universe in the story "Sorena and the fire vest" were extracted using the descriptiveanalytical method and using library resources and common concepts were analyzed. The results showed that the features of the discontinuous imaginal universeare fully present in the images and concepts of the story and it casts a shadow over all of it like a dominant thought. In order to meet the heating requirements of people to keep warm in low temperature environment, this study developed an electrically heated vest with graphene as heating material and three heating levels adjustment. The heating performance of graphene heating carrier was studied, and the human wearing experiment and infrared thermal imager experiment were used to collect the temperature and humidity of clothing microclimate, subjective feeling in the clothing of human abdomen, back and waist within 30 min and the infrared thermal image at 30 min. The comfort performance of electrically heated vest was analyzed at different heating levels, human body parts and activity states. The results show that the electrically heated vest has obvious auxiliary heating effect on the human body at low temperature. With the increase of heating level, the temperature of clothing microclimate increases gradually, and the decrease rate of humidity of clothing microclimate slows down. However, if the heating temperature is too high, it is easy to cause uneven heating of the parts, thus affecting the comfort. Wearing a liquid cooling garment (LCG) that offers near-zone cooling improves the thermal comfort of pilots working in hot environments. Four LCG samples with different arrangements of tubes for distributing liquid were developed. Based on the analysis of the overall and local cooling efficiency of the four LCG samples using manikin tests, another novel LCG with a horizontal-vertical combined tube was proposed to achieve optimal cooling performance. Human trials were conducted to check the novel LCG for improving the thermal comfort of pilots in a hot indoor environment (40°C, 40% RH). The mean skin temperature of the subjects wearing the novel LCG was reduced by 1.9°C in the 120-minute-duration flying simulation work compared to the no-cooling scenario, and the greatest decrease in skin temperature (i.e., 5.7°C) was exhibited at the back waist. The thermal sensation at the upper body was improved to nearly neutral, and the heat stress level was reduced from moderate to slightly. The findings provide a guideline for designing personal LCG, thus benefiting the comfort and safety of pilots in hot cockpits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
