SOXS (SOn of X-Shooter) is a medium resolution (~4500) wide-band (0.35 - 2.0 {\mu}m) spectrograph which passed the Final Design Review in 2018. The instrument is in the final integration phase and it is planned to be installed at the NTT in La Silla by next year. It is mainly composed of five different optomechanical subsystems (Common Path, NIR spectrograph, UV-VIS spectrograph, Camera, and Calibration) and other mechanical subsystems (Interface flange, Platform, cable corotator, and cooling system). A brief overview of the optomechanical subsystems is presented here as more details can be found in the specific proceedings while a more comprehensive discussion is dedicated to the other mechanical subsystems and the tools needed for the integration of the instrument. Moreover, the results obtained during the acceptance of the various mechanical elements are presented together with the experiments performed to validate the functionality of the subsystems. We present here the development status of the NIR spectrograph of the Son Of X-Shooter (SOXS) instrument, for the ESO/NTT telescope at La Silla (Chile). SOXS is a R~4,500 mean resolution spectrograph, with a simultaneously coverage from about 0.35 to 2.00 micron. It will be mounted at the Nasmyth focus of the NTT. The two UV-VIS-NIR wavelength ranges will be covered by two separated arms. The NIR spectrograph is a fully cryogenic echelle-dispersed spectrograph, working in the range 0.80-2.00 micron, equipped with a Hawaii H2RG IR array from Teledyne. The whole spectrograph will be cooled down to about 150 K (but the array at 40 K), to lower the thermal background, and equipped with a thermal filter to block any thermal radiation above 2.0 micron. In this paper we present the post-FDR modifications in the mechanical design due to the various iterations with the manufacturers and the actual procurement status. The last part describes the strategy used to keep under control the mechanical interfaces between the subsystems.

The 'chromosome map' diagram (ChM) proved a successful tool to identify and characterize multiple populations (MPs) in 59 Galactic Globular Clusters (GCs). Here, we construct ChMs for 11 GCs of both Magellanic Clouds (MCs) and with different ages to compare MPs in Galactic and extra-Galactic environments, and explore whether this phenomenon is universal through 'place' and 'time'. MPs are detected in five clusters. The fractions of 1G stars, ranging from about 50% to more than 80%, are significantly higher than those observed in Galactic GCs with similar present-day masses. By considering both Galactic and MC clusters, the fraction of 1G stars exhibits: (i) a strong anti-correlation with the present-day mass, and (ii) with the present-day mass of 2G stars; (iii) a mild anti-correlation with 1G present-day mass. All Galactic clusters without MPs have initial masses smaller than ~1.5 10^5 solar masses but a mass threshold governing the occurrence of MPs seems challenged by massive simple-population MC GCs; (iv) Milky Way clusters with large perigalactic distances typically host larger fractions of 1G stars, but the difference disappears when we use initial cluster masses. These facts are consistent with a scenario where the stars lost by GCs mostly belong to the 1G. By exploiting recent work based on Gaia, half of the known Type II GCs appear clustered in a distinct region of the integral of motions space, thus suggesting a common progenitor galaxy. We study direct products of free-abelian and free groups with special emphasis on algorithmic problems. After giving natural extensions of standard notions into that family, we find an explicit expression for an arbitrary endomorphism of $\ZZ^m \times F_n$. These tools are used to solve several algorithmic and decision problems for $\ZZ^m \times F_n $: the membership problem, the isomorphism problem, the finite index problem, the subgroup and coset intersection problems, the fixed point problem, and the Whitehead problem., Comment: 38 pages

An algorithm is constructed that, when given an explicit presentation of a finitely generated nilpotent group $G,$ decides for any pair of endomorphisms $\varphi, \psi : G \to G$ and any pair of elements $u, v \in G,$ whether or not the equation $(x\varphi)u = v (x\psi)$ has a solution $x \in G.$ Thus it is shown that the problem of the title is decidable. Also we present an algorithm that produces a finite set of generators of the subgroup (equalizer) $Eq_{\varphi, \psi}(G) \leq G$ of all elements $u \in G$ such that $u \varphi = u \psi .$

Let $H$ be a torsion-free $\delta$-hyperbolic group with respect to a finite generating set $S$. Let $a_1,..., a_n$ and $a_{1*},..., a_{n*}$ be elements of $H$ such that $a_{i*}$ is conjugate to $a_i$ for each $i=1,..., n$. Then, there is a uniform conjugator if and only if $W(a_{1*},..., a_{n*})$ is conjugate to $W(a_1,..., a_n)$ for every word $W$ in $n$ variables and length up to a computable constant depending only on $\delta$, $\sharp{S}$ and $\sum_{i=1}^n |a_i|$. As a corollary, we deduce that there exists a computable constant $\mathcal{C}=\mathcal{C}(\delta, \sharp S)$ such that, for any endomorphism $\phi$ of $H$, if $\phi(h)$ is conjugate to $h$ for every element $h\in H$ of length up to $\mathcal {C}$, then $\phi$ is an inner automorphism. Another corollary is the following: if $H$ is a torsion-free conjugacy separable hyperbolic group, then $\text{\rm Out}(H)$ is residually finite. When particularizing the main result to the case of free groups, we obtain a solution for a mixed version of the classical Whitehead's algorithm.

We give an explicit recursive presentation for Mihailova's subgroup $M(H)$ of $F_n \times F_n$ corresponding to a finite, concise and Peiffer aspherical presentation $H=< x_1,..., x_n \mid R_1,..., R_m>$. This partially answers a question of R.I. Grigorchuk, [8, Problem 4.14]. As a corollary, we construct a finitely generated recursively presented orbit undecidable subgroup of $Aut(F_3)$., Comment: 9 pages

Given a short exact sequence of groups with certain conditions, $1\to F\to G\to H\to 1$, we prove that $G$ has solvable conjugacy problem if and only if the corresponding action subgroup $A\leqslant Aut(F)$ is orbit decidable. From this, we deduce that the conjugacy problem is solvable, among others, for all groups of the form $\mathbb{Z}^2\rtimes F_m$, $F_2\rtimes F_m$, $F_n \rtimes \mathbb{Z}$, and $\mathbb{Z}^n \rtimes_A F_m$ with virtually solvable action group $A\leqslant GL_n(\mathbb{Z})$. Also, we give an easy way of constructing groups of the form $\mathbb{Z}^4\rtimes F_n$ and $F_3\rtimes F_n$ with unsolvable conjugacy problem. On the way, we solve the twisted conjugacy problem for virtually surface and virtually polycyclic groups, and give an example of a group with solvable conjugacy problem but unsolvable twisted conjugacy problem. As an application, an alternative solution to the conjugacy problem in $Aut(F_2)$ is given.

While Dehn functions, D(n), of finitely presented groups are very well studied in the literature, mean Dehn functions are much less considered. M. Gromov introduced the notion of mean Dehn function of a group, $D_{mean}(n)$, suggesting that in many cases it should grow much more slowly than the Dehn function itself. Using only elementary counting methods, this paper presents some computations pointing into this direction. Particularizing them to the case of any finite presentation of a finitely generated abelian group (for which it is well known that $D(n)\sim n^2$ except in the 1-dimensional case), we show that the three variations $D_{osmean}(n)$, $D_{smean}(n)$ and $D_{mean}(n)$ all are bounded above by $Kn(\ln n)^2$, where the constant $K$ depends only on the presentation (and the geodesic combing) chosen. Let $\phi$ be an automorphism of a free group $F_n$ of rank $n$, and let $M_{\phi}=F_n \rtimes_{\phi} \mathbb{Z}$ be the corresponding mapping torus of $\phi$. We study the group $Out(M_{\phi})$ under certain technical conditions on $\phi$. Moreover, in the case of rank 2, we classify the cases when this group is finite or virtually cyclic, depending on the conjugacy class of the image of $\phi$ in $GL_2(\mathbb{Z})$., Comment: 14 pages

We show that the conjugacy problem is solvable in [finitely generated free]-by-cyclic groups, by using a result of O. Maslakova that one can algorithmically find generating sets for the fixed subgroups of free group automorphisms, and one of P. Brinkmann that one can determine whether two cyclic words in a free group are mapped to each other by some power of a given automorphism. The algorithm effectively computes a conjugating element, if it exists. We also solve the power conjugacy problem and give an algorithm to recognize if two given elements of a finitely generated free group are Reidemeister equivalent with respect to a given automorphism., Comment: 8 pages, submitted

Let $F$ be a finitely generated free group. By using Bestvina-Handel theory, as well as some further improvements, the eigengroups of a given automorphism of $F$ (and its fixed subgroup among them) are globally analyzed and described. In particular, an explicit description of all subgroups of $F$ which occur as the fixed subgroup of some automorphism is given., Comment: 41 pages

We investigate the presence of topological twistons in crystalline polyethylene. We describe crystalline polyethylene with a model that couples the torsional and longitudinal degrees of freedom of the polymeric chain by means of a system of two real scalar fields. This model supports topological twistons, which are described by exact and stable topological solutions that appear when the interaction between torsional and longitudinal fields is polynomial, containing up to the sixth power in the fields. We calculate the energy of the topological twiston, and the result is in very good agreement with the value obtained via molecular simulation., Comment: Latex, 10 pages. To appear in Chem. Phys. We introduce an alternate model to describe twistons in crystalline polyethylene. The model couples torsional and longitudinal degrees of freedom and appears as an extension of a model that describes only the torsional motion. In this paper we follow the lines of recent works to investigate systems of two coupled real scalar fields defined by potentials that describe periodic interactions between the scalar fields. We work with polymeric chains containing periodic interactions between the coupled fields, and we investigate the topological sectors to obtain explicit soliton solutions and their corresponding energy. In particular, we offer an example that considers deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) as a system of coupled fields, and we present the main steps to describe DNA as a polymeric chain belonging to the class of systems of two coupled real scalar fields., Comment: 18 pages, Revtex, 03 figures
