Abstract

Femtocell provides a potential solution for poor coverage and capacity limitation in the indoor environment. For wireless service providers (WSPs), the emerging femtocell market brings new opportunities as well as challenges. In this paper, we propose an economic framework for an oligopolistic femtocell market, where selfish WSPs try to maximize their net profits by price competition and resource allocation. When analyzing the optimal strategy for each WSP, we are facing two major challenges. On the one hand, it is difficult for a WSP to acquire complete information about its rival to make well-informed decisions. On the other hand, the market share of a WSP is not only determined by its own price and quality of service (QoS), but also affected by prices and QoS of other WSPs. To address these problems, we formulate the oligopolistic femtocell market as a Bayesian game, where WSPs with incomplete information of their competitors optimize pricing and resource allocation strategies based on a well-round market analysis. We first study the scenario where all WSPs enter the femtocell market at the same time and unaware of each other's strategy. Then, we consider the scenario where WSPs enter the femtocell market sequentially, and the newcomers can observe the strategy of the incumbent. We derive the optimal pricing and resource allocation strategy for each WSP and obtain the Bayesian Nash equilibrium of the whole game. Abstract

More people have access to Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS, a.k.a. mobile picture messaging) than to the Internet, but mobile education markets have yet to adopt MMS as a content delivery mechanism. This paper investigates the role of carrier interoperability as an enabler of MMS in mobile multimedia distance learning. Using instructor reuse of content and learner access to content as feasibility criteria, we empirically evaluate the performance, user adoption, and commercial market of MMS-based mobile education. This study deployed a value-added service that broadcasts videos via MMS to cell phones, and conducted a 9-month public education campaign with weekly broadcasts on breast cancer. We selected a video format and markup language that is compatible with domestic carriers and cell phones, and supports existing educational material. To contrast behaviors between participants with and without access to the Internet, we offered participants the same content via MMS, email and the Web. 277 participants enrolled in the campaign; 120 opted to receive the videos via mobile messaging, and 157 had Internet access and opted to receive videos via email or the Web. Campaign analytics reveal that all participants without Internet access successfully received the MMS video broadcasts, and significantly, one-third of participants with Internet access opted to receive the videos via MMS as well. We conclude with a discussion of why participants with Internet access may have chosen MMS over Internet-based alternatives. We also estimate the size of the market for MMS-based mobile education, and distinguish it from the person-to-person messaging market. Aiming at this P4P CDN networking defects, this paper proposes a P4P CDN automatic construction strategy based on network measurement. Using the network measurement subsystem to acquire the key information, the distance and status of the network between the node and the cache node can be measured; the ISP ID the node belongs to can be obtained. Finally around each CDN edge cache node, an autonomous domain can be built automatically. This strategy improves the rationality of P4P CDN node service domain and the stability of P4P CDN service. Abstract

Multiple factors have to be taken into account when mobile telecommunication network providers make decisions about radio transmitter placement. Generally, area coverage and the average signal level provided are of prime importance in these decisions. These criteria give rise to a bi-objective problem of facility location, with the goal of achieving an acceptable trade-off between maximising the total area coverage and maximising the average signal level provided to the demand region by a network of radio transmitters. This paper establishes a mathematical modelling framework, based on these two placement criteria, for evaluating the effectiveness of a given set of radio transmitter locations. In the framework, coverage is measured according to the degree of obstruction of the so-called ‘Fresnel zone’ that is formed between handset and base station, while signal strength is modelled taking radio wave propagation loss into account. This framework is used to formulate a novel bi-objective facility location model that may form the basis for decision support aimed at identifying high-quality transmitter location trade-off solutions for mobile telecommunication network providers. The UMTS/LTE protocol for mobile phone networks has been designed to offer a limited form of anonymity for mobile phone users. In this paper, we quantify precisely what this limited form of anonymity actually provides via a formal security model. The model considers an execution where the home and roaming network providers are considered as one entity. We consider two forms of anonymity, one where the mobile stations under attack are statically selected before the execution, and a second where the adversary selects these stations adaptively. We prove that the UMTS/LTE protocol meets both of these security definitions. Our analysis requires new assumptions on the underlying keyed functions for UMTS, namely that a set of pseudorandom functions are 'agile'. There are two kinds of uncertainty for providing green service over Internet of Things (IoT): network service period and user satisfaction model. In this paper, we consider a power-aware service problem over IoT where both of the uncertainties are incorporated. Specifically, we consider a generic IoT's service scenario: a server provides different kinds of services without knowledge of user satisfaction model and network service period. Our objective aims at dynamically adjusting the power allocation for each service over a uncertain period to maximize expected user satisfaction. It should be noted that practical user satisfaction rate is observed over time, but the inherent functional relationship between the power and satisfaction rate is unknown. In order to present a quantitative analysis, we consider a general user satisfaction model belonging to a class of functions that do not deploy any parametric representation. In this case, a blind dynamic powering algorithm is developed, in which one learns the satisfaction function and optimizes power-aware user satisfaction with on-line operation. More precisely, the algorithm performance is measured in terms of regret which denotes the satisfaction loss compared to the optimal satisfactions that can be obtained when the service period and satisfaction rate are known. Moreover, a tight bound on this regret is proposed for any possible powering policy, and we show that the proposed algorithm can achieve a regret that is close to this bound. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
