Abstract

The design and parameters of the IHEP–JINR neutrino detector, the largest experimental setup at the U-70 accelerator (IHEP, Protvino), is described. The main detector components (the drift chambers, the liquid-scintillator counters, the detector of electromagnetic showers, and the magnetic system) are described in detail. The organization of the on-line data-acquisition system and the off-line software is outlined. The main characteristics of the detector are presented. The basic physical results obtained with the setup are briefly described.

Abstract

Data from a 70 GeV proton-iron beam-dump experiment and the theoretical predictions of light Higgs production from the decays π ± →e ± V (∼) e H, K ± →e ± V (∼) e H, K ± →π ± H, K 0 L →π 0 H, η′→η′H were used to establish limits on the mass of a scalar Higgs boson in the context of the standard model. The mass range 1 m H c 2 was excluded at 95% CL.

Abstract

A search has been performed for weakly interacting neutral light scalar and pseudoscalar particles in a proton-iron beam dump experiment via the Bethe-Heitler process. No positive signal was observed. Limits are derived on the masses of these particles in the framework of the Standard Model and its minimal supersymmetric extension (MSSM) comparing the experimental results with expectations for Bethe-Heitler e+e− and μ+μ− pair production. The Higgs particle of the SU2L×U1 Standard Theory is excluded for masses in the range mH

Abstract

A search for dimuons produced in a spark chamber experiment in neutrino and antineutrino beams of the Serpukhov accelerator is reported. The clear dimuon signal has been observed in vN interactions. R v = N (2 ω )/ N (1 ω )⩾ (6.2 ± 1.7) × 10 −3 in the energy interval 7.5 ÷ 30 GeV. From antineutrino data we conclude that in the same energy range R v ⩽ 1.1. × 10 −2 (90% C.L.) .

Abstract

The methods to measure muon flux distributions in the muon filter of the IHEP neutrino beam are described. The construction and characteristics of the ionization chambers used as muon detectors are given. The detectors allow one to measure the muon fluxes with density from ⪆ 10 7 down to ∼10 2 muons/cm 2 at ∼3 μs pulse duration. The system provides both monitoring of the neutrino beam and measuring of the total muon fluxes for neutrino spectrum reconstruction. The detector sensitivity was constant within the limits of 2–3% during a one-year period of operation in the neutrino beam.

Abstract

First results on measuring polarization in π - p →π°n reaction at 40 GeV/c are presented for the 4-momentum transfer range from 0.05 up to 0.4 (GeV/c)2. The experiment was carried out at the IHEP 70 GeV accelerator on a polarized proton target. Polarization in this reaction was earlier studied at incident momentum below 11.2 GeV/c/1–4/. Comparison of the present data with the previous ones allows us to see the polarization effect decreases with energy growth.

Abstract

The search for dimuon production in vN and vN interactions at the Serpukhov accelerator was started in December, 1974. Preliminary data after analysis of part of the statistics of the neutrino exposure showed no effect [1, 2]. In further measurements we changed the neutrino spectrum. Namely, we suppressed the low energy part and enriched the high energy part. It was done because similar experiments at Fermilab [3, 4] indicated predominant dimuon production at energies E v ≳ 30 GeV. Fig. 1 shows qualitatively the variation of the neutrino spectra from the first to the second run.
