Abstract

A cadmium tungstate crystal scintillator enriched in 106 Cd was developed for an experiment to search for double beta processes in 106 Cd. With this aim samples of cadmium with natural isotopic composition and enriched in 106 Cd were purified by vacuum distillation. Cadmium tungstate compounds were synthesized from solutions. The absolute isotopic composition of the enriched cadmium was accurately determined as 66.4% by thermal ionisation mass-spectrometry. A 106 CdWO 4 crystal boule was grown by the low-thermal-gradient Czochralski technique. The total irrecoverable loss of the enriched cadmium in all the stages of the crystal scintillator production does not exceed 2.3%. The produced 106 CdWO 4 crystal scintillator with mass of 216 g exhibits good optical and scintillation properties.

Abstract

Luminescence properties (emission spectra, thermally stimulated luminescence, dependence of intensity on temperature) of lithium molybdate ( Li 2 MoO 4 ) single crystal have been studied under X-ray excitation from the liquid nitrogen to room temperature. The applicability of Li 2 MoO 4 single crystal as a cryogenic scintillating bolometer was checked for the first time. Both scintillation and heat signals were observed making Li 2 MoO 4 material an interesting candidate for searches for neutrinoless double beta decay of 100Mo.

Abstract

Results are presented on our latest research, aimed at the development and study of oxide scintillation crystals (ZnWO4, ZnMoO4, PbWO4, PbMoO4, and MgWO4) with high scintillation yield and low intrinsic radioactivity. We report on the improvement of these properties for conventional scintillators, as well as on new promising crystals based on metal tungstates and molybdates. The results are discussed in view of applying these materials in cryogenic experiments searching for dark matter and/or neutrinoless double beta decay. © 2006 IEEE.

Abstract

A cadmium tungstate crystal boule enriched in $^{116}$Cd to 82% with mass of 1868 g was grown by the low-thermal-gradient Czochralski technique. The isotopic composition of cadmium and the trace contamination of the crystal were estimated by High Resolution Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass-Spectrometry. The crystal scintillators produced from the boule were subjected to characterization that included measurements of transmittance and energy resolution. A low background scintillation detector with two $^{116}$CdWO$_4$ crystal scintillators (586 g and 589 g) was developed. The detector was running over 1727 h deep underground at the Gran Sasso National Laboratories of the INFN (Italy), which allowed to estimate the radioactive contamination of the enriched crystal scintillators. The radiopurity of a third $^{116}$CdWO$_4$ sample (326 g) was tested with the help of ultra-low background high purity germanium $\gamma$ detector. Abstract

Scintillation properties of PbWO4 and PbMoO4 have been studied as potential cryogenic scintillators for rare event searches. The light output and decay kinetics of PbWO4 and PbMoO4 crystals for excitation with 241Am α particles were examined over the temperature range 7300 K. The α/γ ratio was measured with a PbMoO4 crystal scintillator for 5.3 MeV α particles, and the ability to distinguish between signals induced by α particles and γ quanta by pulse shape discrimination was assessed for the PbMoO4 crystal scintillator at 77 K. The energy dependence of the quenching factor for oxygen, molybdenum, tungsten and lead ions at low energy was calculated using a semi-empirical approach with data from the α particle measurements. The study demonstrates the good potential of these scintillators for cryogenic dark matter search and double beta decay experiments. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

Magnesium tungstate (MgWO4) crystals of ~1 cm3 volume were obtained for the first time using a flux growth technique. The crystal was subjected to comprehensive characterisation that included room-temperature measurements of the transmittance, X-ray luminescence spectra, afterglow under X-ray excitation, relative photoelectron output, energy resolution, non-proportionality of scintillation response to γ-quanta, response to α-particles, and pulse shape for γ-quanta and α-particles. The light output and decay kinetics of MgWO4 were studied over the temperature range 7-305 K. Under X-ray excitation the crystal exhibits an intense luminescence band peaking at a wavelength of 470 nm; the intensity of afterglow after 20 ms is 0.035%. An energy resolution of 9.1% for 662 keV γ-quanta of 137Cs was measured with a small (≈0.9 g) sample of the MgWO4 crystal. The photoelectron output of the MgWO4 crystal scintillator is 35% that of CdWO4 and 27% that of NaI(Tl). The detector showed pulse-shape discrimination ability in measurements with α-particles and γ-quanta, which enabled us to assess the radioactive contamination of the scintillator. The results of these studies demonstrate the prospect of this material for a variety of scintillation applications, including rare event searches. © 2008 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract

EURECA (European Underground Rare Event Calorimeter Array) is an astro-particle physics facility aiming to directly detect galactic dark matter. The Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane has been selected as host laboratory. The EURECA collaboration unites CRESST, EDELWEISS and the Spanish-French experiment ROSEBUD, thus concentrating and focussing effort on cryogenic detector research in Europe into a single facility. EURECA will use a target mass of up to one ton, enough to explore WIMP - nucleon scalar scattering cross sections in the region of 10-9 - 10-10 picobarn. A major advantage of EURECA is the planned use of more than just one target material (multi target experiment for WIMP identification). © EAS, EDP Sciences 2009.
