Abstract

The design, construction, and performance of a segmented-target, cathode-strip, tracking-detector is discussed. The chamber was made of low- Z materials in order to allow photons to leave the target region. It was used to determine the reaction vertex of stopping kaons, and was successfully operated in a high-intensity kaon beamline at the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The vertical and horizontal resolutions of the stopping kaon reaction positions were σ X ∼0.454 mm and σ Y ∼1.180 mm , respectively. The uncertainty in the longitudinal ( Z ) direction is given by one-half the thickness of a target segment.

Abstract

A search for double- Λ hypernuclei ( 12 ΛΛ Be) and H -dibaryons using the 12 C( K − , K + ) reaction was performed at the BNL-AGS using a high-intensity 1.8 GeV/ c K − beam. A missing-mass analysis below the end point of the quasi-free Ξ − production was used to investigate these S =−2 systems. The upper limit obtained for the forward-angle cross section of 12 ΛΛ Be production is 6 to 10 nb/sr. This is the first search for the direct production of double- Λ hypernuclei to reach the sensitivity required to observe the signal predicted by theoretical calculations. For the H -production cross section, we have obtained an upper limit in the range of a few nb/sr to 10 nb/sr for the H mass below 2100 MeV/ c 2 . This upper limit is the most sensitive H search result to date for a tightly bound H .

Abstract

An experiment to study double-strangeness systems was performed at the BNL-AGS via the (K − ,K + ) reaction using a diamond target and scintillating fiber (SCIFI) blocks (E885). A search for the H dibaryon through the stopped Ξ − process is one of the objectives. The number of stopped Ξ − 's is about 9,000, and the expected sensitivity of the H dibaryon search is more than one order of magnitude higher than that of the previous experiment at KEK-PS (E224).

Abstract

There has been recent progress on both theoretical and experimental frontiers to constrain models of weak interactions between baryons. The status of the analysis of Λ 4,5 He decay rates is discussed, comparing new results with other recent and old measurements. In addition to total decay widths, kinetic energy distributions and some preliminary coincidence spectra are presented. These coincidences have proven to be essential to the interpretation of the weak-decay processes. In light of these new results, there is now consensus that complementary measurement of the decays of Λ 4 H is essential to address some basic questions, such as the validity of the ΔI=1/2 rule for nucleon-stimulated weak decay [1–5]. Prospects for such a measurement are also discussed.

Abstract

The PS 185 experiment at LEAR/CERN studies strangeness production in antiproton-proton collisions in flight. Exclusive final states containing pairs of antihyperons and hyperons have been analysed. The data have been used to investigate strange quark production dynamics. New data at the highest energies available at LEAR extend the existing data set for the Λ¯Λ channel. Preliminary data from a new threshold scan are available. For the Σ¯0Λ+cc channel first spin correlation data have been extracted. First preliminary differential cross section data from the Σ¯−Σ− channel are also presented.

Abstract

Interest in the production of hyperon-antihyperon pairs following antiproton-proton annihilation stems largely from attempts to understand the nature of flavor production. To date the major focus of both the experimental and the theoretical effort has been on the p¯p??¯? reaction. In this paper, we present data on the complementary channels p¯p?S¯ 0? and p¯p??¯S0. Events from the kinematically similar p¯p??¯? reaction were obtained in parallel. The procedure to distinguish these three separate reactions is described and results for all channels are presented. These include the total and differential cross sections, hyperon polarizations, and spin correlation coefficients. Data were obtained at incident antiproton lab momenta of 1.726 and 1.771 GeV/c which correspond to excess kinetic energies in the p¯p??¯S0+c.c. reaction of 26 and 40 MeV, respectively, above threshold. Comparisons are made to earlier work at similar excess energies in the p¯p??¯? channel. The low-energy regime has been highlighted in this experiment to reduce the complexity in the theoretical analysis.

Abstract

A strangelet search in Si+Pt and Au+Pt collisions at alternating-gradient synchrotron (AGS) energies, using a focusing spectrometer, sensitive to mass per charge of 3-14 GeV/${\mathit{c}}^{2}$ was conducted during the 1992 and 1993 heavy ion runs at the AGS. The null results thereof are presented as upper limits on the invariant production cross section, in the range of ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}5}$-${10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$ mb ${\mathit{c}}^{3}$/${\mathrm{GeV}}^{2}$, and model dependent sensitivity limits in the range of ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}7}$-${10}^{\ensuremath{-}5}$ per collision. Measurements of the production cross sections of several nonstrange nuclear systems, from $p$ to $^{7}\mathrm{Be}$ and $^{8}\mathrm{Li}$, the background of the strangelet search, are also presented.

Abstract

Recent estimates suggest that the production of strange exotic objects, such as the hypothetical {ital H} dibaryon ({ital H}), is surprisingly large in Au collisions at AGS energies. Two possible bound states of the {ital H}, namely {ital H}-{sup 3}He and {ital H}-{ital d}, would be well separated in mass from known nuclear isotopes and therefore could be uniquely identified by experiment. We report the null result of a first search for these objects in Au+Pt collisions at the AGS, and limit their production cross sections for stable systems to {similar_to}10{sup {minus}5} mb/(GeV){sup 2}, near {ital y}=0.6 and {ital p}{sub {ital t}}/{ital Z}=0.18 GeV/{ital c}.

During the 1993 AGS heavy ion run, experiment E886 conducted a strangelet search in Au + Pt reactions, with beam momentum of 10.8 GeV/c per nucleon. Presented here are the upper limit for strangelet production, invariant cross sections for p, t, d 3 He, 4 He, 6 He, 8 He, 6 Li, 7 Li, 8 Li and 7 Be, along with a demonstration of their agreement with a coalescence model fit to data collected by E886 during the 1992 engineering run, and upper limits for production cross sections for other rare objects, such as (H dibaryon)-nucleus systems. All results reported here are preliminary.

Abstract

The reaction p p → Λ Λ → p π + pπ − is studied in the experiment PS185 at the CERN Low Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR). A precise measurement of the excitation function in the immediate threshold region below 6 MeV excess energy was achieved. The total cross section shows an unexpected behaviour around 1 MeV excess energy.

Abstract

In the G0 experiment, performed at Jefferson Lab, the parity-violating elastic scattering of electrons from protons and quasi-elastic scattering from deuterons is measured in order to determine the neutral weak currents of the nucleon. Asymmetries as small as 1 part per million in the scattering of a polarized electron beam are determined using a dedicated apparatus. It consists of specialized beam-monitoring and control systems, a cryogenic hydrogen (or deuterium) target, and a superconducting, toroidal magnetic spectrometer equipped with plastic scintillation and aerogel Cerenkov detectors, as well as fast readout electronics for the measurement of individual events. The main focus of the PS185 collaboration at LEAR is the study of exclusive antihyperon-hyperon production in antiproton-proton collisions. This has been done comprehensively for the reaction p p → Λ Λ . In recent years other channels like pp → -Λγ 0 + cc. or p p → ϵ/ +- ϵ/ +- have been included in the program. Results from the ongoing analysis for these final states will be presented.

Abstract

A time-of-flight detector array has been developed for an experiment searching for the strangeness −2 H-particle. The array consists of 40 logs of plastic scintillator with dimensions 2.00 × 0.085 × 0.050 m3. The photomultiplier tubes are coupled to the scintillators without the use of light guides, and the mounting of the bars is designed for easy adjustment and servicing. The average intrinsic time resolution was found to be 110 ps σ.

Abstract

We have measured the beam-normal single-spin asymmetry in elastic scattering of transversely-polarized 3 GeV electrons from unpolarized protons at Q^2 = 0.15, 0.25 (GeV/c)^2. The results are inconsistent with calculations solely using the elastic nucleon intermediate state, and generally agree with calculations with significant inelastic hadronic intermediate state contributions. The physics program in Hall A at Jefferson Lab commenced in the summer of 1997 with a detailed investigation of the ^(16)O(e,e′p) reaction in quasielastic, constant (q,ω) kinematics at Q^2≈0.8(GeV/c)^2, q≈1GeV/c, and ω≈445MeV. Abstract

The instrumentation in Hall A at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility was designed to study electro-and photo-induced reactions at very high luminosity and good momentum and angular resolution for at least one of the reaction products. The central components of Hall A are two identical high resolution spectrometers, which allow the vertical drift chambers in the focal plane to provide a momentum resolution of better than 2 x 10(-4). A variety of Cherenkov counters, scintillators and lead-glass calorimeters provide excellent particle identification. The facility has been operated successfully at a luminosity well in excess of 10(38) CM-2 s(-1). The research program is aimed at a variety of subjects, including nucleon structure functions, nucleon form factors and properties of the nuclear medium. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

The (Kstopped−,π0) strangeness and charge changing reaction was investigated by producing a BΛ12 hypernucleus from a carbon target. The branching ratio for K− capture to the ground and p-shell states of this hypernucleus was found to be (0.28±0.08)×10−3 and (0.35±0.09)×10−3, respectively, which after correction for isospin was lower than a previously measured value for the C12(Kstopped−,π−)CΛ12 reaction, but still above the theoretical predictions for the ground state. The experiment obtained a missing-mass resolution comparable to in-flight reactions, however the higher background and lower selectivity of the Kstopped− reaction limits its usefulness in the study of new hypernuclear species.

Abstract

A search for the H dibaryon has been conducted at the Brookhaven National Laboratory AGS, using a 1.8 GeV/c K{sup -} beam. {Xi}{sup -} hyperons were produced in a liquid-hydrogen target via the reaction K{sup -}+p{yields}K{sup +}+{Xi}{sup -}. The hyperons were slowed in degraders and those most likely to stop in an adjacent liquid-deuterium target were tagged by silicon detectors. Monoenergetic neutrons were sought as the signature for H formation in ({Xi}{sup -},d){sub atom}{yields}H+n. The experiment was designed for optimal sensitivity to a loosely-bound H, complementing recent (K{sup -},K{sup +}) measurements on nuclear targets. In addition, the experiment's sensitivity was independent of lifetime and of decay modes of the H. No statistically significant evidence for H formation was seen. Upper limits on the branching ratio for H formation in the above reaction have been set in a mass range extending from slightly above {Lambda}{Lambda} threshold to {approx}100 MeV of binding and are compared with a corresponding theoretical prediction.

Abstract

We report on precision measurements of the cross sections for the reactions {bar p}p{yields}{bar {Lambda}}{Lambda}, {bar p}p{yields}{bar {Lambda}}{Sigma}{sup 0}, and {bar p}p{yields}{bar {Sigma}}{sup 0}{Lambda} in the region below 5 MeV excess kinetic energy above reaction threshold. For the {bar p}p{yields}{bar {Lambda}}{Lambda} measurement, the data represent a third and definitive scan through the threshold region by this experiment. Improvements in the detector system and analysis techniques, coupled with greatly increased statistics, have negated the question of the existence of a near-threshold resonance as had been indicated in our earlier, lower-statistics studies. The high statistics permit the first extraction of the polarization information at these low energies. We also report the first measurement of the cross section for the complementary reactions {bar p}p{yields}{bar {Lambda}}{Sigma}{sup 0}+c.c. at excess energies up to 2.5 MeV. This allows a comparison of the onset of {bar {Lambda}}{Lambda} production to that of {bar {Lambda}}{Sigma}{sup 0} and {bar {Sigma}}{sup 0}{Lambda}. The data show no evidence for near-threshold resonance structures in either reaction channel. Further, the {bar p}p{yields}{bar {Lambda}}{Sigma}{sup 0}+c.c. reactions exhibit a larger P-wave fraction close to threshold compared to {bar p}p{yields}{bar {Lambda}}{Lambda}.

Abstract

The first $(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{e}{,e}^{\ensuremath{'}}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{p})$ polarization transfer measurements on a nucleus heavier than deuterium have been carried out at Jefferson Laboratory. Transverse and longitudinal components of the polarization of protons ejected in the reaction ${}^{16}\mathrm{O}(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{e}{,e}^{\ensuremath{'}}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{p})$ were measured in quasielastic perpendicular kinematics at a ${Q}^{2}$ of 0.8 $(\mathrm{GeV}{/c)}^{2}.$ The data are in good agreement with state of the art calculations.

Abstract

We measured the cross section and response functions for the quasielastic 16O(e,e'p) reaction for missing energies 25or =E(m)or =120 MeV at missing momenta P(m)or =340 MeV/c. For 25E(m)50 MeV and P(m) approximately 60 MeV/c, the reaction is dominated by a single 1s(1/2) proton knockout. At larger P(m), the single-particle aspects are increasingly masked by more complicated processes. Calculations which include pion exchange currents, isobar currents, and short-range correlations account for the shape and the transversity, but for only half of the magnitude of the measured cross section.

Abstract

The E885 Collaboration utilized the $1.8 \mathrm{GeV}{/cK}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ beam line at the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron (AGS) to accumulate greater than 10 times the world's existing data sample of ${(K}^{\ensuremath{-}}{,K}^{+})$ events on carbon. A total of about $3\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{5} {(K}^{\ensuremath{-}}{,K}^{+})$ events were collected and analyzed. $\ensuremath{\Xi}$ hypernuclear states are expected to be produced through the reaction ${K}^{\ensuremath{-}}{+}^{12}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{C}{K}^{+}{+}_{\ensuremath{\Xi}}^{12}\mathrm{Be}.$ A signal could also result from direct production of ${}_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{11}\mathrm{Be}+\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ without a distinct $\ensuremath{\Xi}$ intermediate state. The measured missing-mass spectrum indicates the existence of a signal below the threshold for free ${\ensuremath{\Xi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ production that cannot be explained by background or effects of limited resolution. Although the resolution was not sufficient to resolve discrete hypernuclear states, the excess of events in the region of missing mass, kinematically inaccessible in free ${\ensuremath{\Xi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ production, can be compared with theoretical predictions for ${}_{\ensuremath{\Xi}}^{12}\mathrm{Be}$ production. Reasonable agreement between the data and theory is achieved by assuming a $\ensuremath{\Xi}$-nucleus potential well depth ${\mathrm{V}}_{0\ensuremath{\Xi}}$ of about 14 MeV within the Woods-Saxon prescription.

Abstract

Measurement of the energy of neutrons in coincidence with the production of free {xi}{sup -} hyperons can be used to determine the masses of {sub {lambda}}{sub {lambda}}{sup 12}B hypernuclear states and branching ratios of their formation from ({xi}{sup -},{sup 12}C){sub atom}{yields}{sub {lambda}}{sub {lambda}}{sup 12}B+n. The E885 Collaboration utilized the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron 1.8 GeV/c K{sup -} beam incident on a diamond target to accumulate the largest-to-date data sample of (K{sup -},K{sup +}) events. A total of about 3x10{sup 5} (K{sup -},K{sup +}) events have been collected and analyzed. The neutron spectrum shows no apparent peaks from the neutron-emission channel of double-{lambda} hypernuclear formation from ({xi}{sup -},{sup 12}C){sub atom} decay. The upper limit on the branching ratio of the above process has been set to be at or below 4% in the region of expected neutron energies. (c) 2000 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

At the Brookhaven AGS several experiments are searching for the unique strangeness S = −2 H-dibaryon with the quark composition (uuddss). The E813/E836 collaboration, in particular, is using a high-intensity, separated 1.8 GeV/c K − beam and two different target configurations. In E836 the reaction K − + 3He→K + + H + n is used to search for a relatively deeply-bound H. Complementary to E836 the reactions K − + p → Ξ − + K +, followed by (Ξ −, d)atom → H + n are used to search near twice the A mass. The status of these two experiments is summarized, and other H-dibaryon searches are briefly reviewed.

Abstract

Recently, highly relativistic Au beams have become available at the Brookhaven National Laboratory, Alternating Gradient Synchrotron. Inclusive production cross sections for composite particles, d, t, He3, and He4, in 11.5A GeV/c Au+Pt collisions have been measured using a beam line spectrometer. For comparison, composite particle production was also measured in Si+Pt and p+Pt collisions at similar beam momenta per nucleon (14.6A GeV/c and 12.9 GeV/c, respectively). The projectile dependence of the production cross section for each composite particle has been fitted to Aprojα. The parameter α can be described by a single function of the mass number and the momentum per nucleon of the produced particle. Additionally, the data are well described by momentum-space coalescence. Comparisons with similar analysis of Bevalac A+A data are made. The coalescence radii extracted from momentum-space coalescence fits are used to determine reaction volumes (‘‘source size’’) within the context of the Sato-Yazaki model.

Abstract

We have measured the beam-normal single-spin asymmetry in elastic scattering of transversely polarized 3 GeV electrons from unpolarized protons at Q2=0.15, 0.25 (GeV/c)2. The results are inconsistent with calculations solely using the elastic nucleon intermediate state and generally agree with calculations with significant inelastic hadronic intermediate state contributions. A(n) provides a direct probe of the imaginary component of the 2gamma exchange amplitude, the complete description of which is important in the interpretation of data from precision electron-scattering experiments.

Abstract

We have measured parity-violating asymmetries in elastic electron-proton scattering over the range of momentum transfers 0.12 < or =Q2 < or =1.0 GeV2. These asymmetries, arising from interference of the electromagnetic and neutral weak interactions, are sensitive to strange-quark contributions to the currents of the proton. The measurements were made at Jefferson Laboratory using a toroidal spectrometer to detect the recoiling protons from a liquid hydrogen target. The results indicate nonzero, Q2 dependent, strange-quark contributions and provide new information beyond that obtained in previous experiments.
