In recent years, studies reported poor vitamin D status in morbidly obese patients, with a graded relationship between vitamin level, BMI and adiposity. Aim of our work was to evaluate vitamin D status in a group of obese adults and any correlation with body composition and lifestyle. This observational study collected baseline data of 71 obese patients (20M/51F, age 52±12,1yrs, BMI 41,7±7,3kg/m²), recruited in spring 2019. BMI, fat mass (kg) (BIA Sensors Medics), animal lipid dietary intakes, physical activity (IPAQ) and sun exposure (H.E.C.) were analysed in relation to serum vitamin (25OH)D concentration. Serum vitamin D status was also evaluated in a group of 53 non-obese patients (12M/41F, age 42,1±17,1yrs, BMI 24,7±3,2kg/m²). Statistical Analysis: Anova-Pearson Correlation (SPSS-Statistics25). Hypotheses include sequestration in adipose tissue and volumetric diluition. A healthy lifestyle, together with vitamin D supplementation when required, is suggested to prevent/treat hypovitaminosis in both obeses and non-obeses.

Bioelectrical impedance is a technique allowing a quick, repeatable and reliable assessment of body composition. This method was applied to detect total body water (TBW), fat (FAT) and fat-free mass (FFM) in 80 normal subjects, 65 diabetic (45 insulin-dependent [IDD], 20 non insulin-dependent [NIDD]) and 34 uremic diabetic patients (20 IDD, 14 NIDD) submitted to hemodialysis three times a week. Uremic patients were tested at the end of the dialytic session. Multivariated analysis adjusted for age, sex and disease showed the following results: body mass index (BMI) increased with age (p0.005) and in the presence of NIDD (p.001); TBW was lower in nephropathic patients (p0.05) and in the female sex (p0.0001); FFM decreased with age (p0.005), female sex (p0.0001) and in nonuremic NIDD (p0.001). Correspondingly FAT increased with age (p0.005), female sex (p0.0001) and in nonuremic NIDD (p0.001). Sixteen uremic subjects, randomly selected from both IDD and NIDD groups, tested at the beginning and at the end of the same hemodialytic session, showed a significant decrease of TBW which corresponded to the correction of their overhydratation. In our patients uremia does not seem to influence the nutritional status and the bioelectrical analysis could be applied to determine the real dry weight in hemodialyzed diabetic patients.
