Abstract: Abstract This article describes the setup and performance of the near and far detectors in the Double Chooz experiment. The electron antineutrinos of the Chooz nuclear power plant were measured in two identically designed detectors with different average baselines of about 400 m and 1050 m from the two reactor cores. Over many years of data taking the neutrino signals were extracted from interactions in the detectors with the goal of measuring a fundamental parameter in the context of neutrino oscillation, the mixing angle $$\theta _{13}$$ θ 13 . The central part of the Double Chooz detectors was a main detector comprising four cylindrical volumes filled with organic liquids. From the inside towards the outside there were volumes containing gadolinium-loaded scintillator, gadolinium-free scintillator, a buffer oil and, optically separated, another liquid scintillator acting as veto system. Above this main detector an additional outer veto system using plastic scintillator strips was installed. The technologies developed in Double Chooz were inspiration for several other antineutrino detectors in the field. The detector design allowed implementation of efficient background rejection techniques including use of pulse shape information provided by the data acquisition system. The Double Chooz detectors featured remarkable stability, in particular for the detected photons, as well as high radiopurity of the detector components.

Abstract: Abstract We present a search for signatures of neutrino mixing of electron anti-neutrinos with additional hypothetical sterile neutrino flavors using the Double Chooz experiment. The search is based on data from 5 years of operation of Double Chooz, including 2 years in the two-detector configuration. The analysis is based on a profile likelihood, i.e. comparing the data to the model prediction of disappearance in a data-to-data comparison of the two respective detectors. The analysis is optimized for a model of three active and one sterile neutrino. It is sensitive in the typical mass range $${5 \times 10^{-3}}\,\mathrm{eV}^2 \lesssim \varDelta m^2_{41} \lesssim {3 \times 10^{-1}}\,\mathrm{eV}^2 $$ 5 × 10 - 3 eV 2 ≲ Δ m 41 2 ≲ 3 × 10 - 1 eV 2 for mixing angles down to $$\sin ^2 2\theta _{14} \gtrsim {0.02} $$ sin 2 2 θ 14 ≳ 0.02 . No significant disappearance additionally to the conventional disappearance related to $$\theta _{13} $$ θ 13 is observed and correspondingly exclusion bounds on the sterile mixing parameter $$\theta _{14} $$ θ 14 as a function of $$ \varDelta m^2_{41} $$ Δ m 41 2 are obtained.

Abstract: Abstract A θ 13 oscillation analysis based on the observed antineutrino rates at the Double Chooz far and near detectors for different reactor power conditions is presented. This approach provides a so far unique simultaneous determination of θ 13 and the total background rates without relying on any assumptions on the specific background contributions. The analysis comprises 865 days of data collected in both detectors with at least one reactor in operation. The oscillation results are enhanced by the use of 24.06 days (12.74 days) of reactor-off data in the far (near) detector. The analysis considers the ν ¯ e $$ {\overline{\nu}}_e $$ interactions up to a visible energy of 8.5 MeV, using the events at higher energies to build a cosmogenic background model considering fast-neutrons interactions and 9Li decays. The background-model-independent determination of the mixing angle yields sin2(2θ 13) = 0.094 ± 0.017, being the best-fit total background rates fully consistent with the cosmogenic background model. A second oscillation analysis is also performed constraining the total background rates to the cosmogenic background estimates. While the central value is not significantly modified due to the consistency between the reactor-off data and the background estimates, the addition of the background model reduces the uncertainty on θ 13 to 0.015. Along with the oscillation results, the normalization of the anti-neutrino rate is measured with a precision of 0.86%, reducing the 1.43% uncertainty associated to the expectation.

Abstract: Abstract The yields and production rates of the radioisotopes 9Li and 8He created by cosmic muon spallation on 12C, have been measured by the two detectors of the Double Chooz experiment. The identical detectors are located at separate sites and depths, which means that they are subject to different muon spectra. The near (far) detector has an overburden of ∼120 m.w.e. (∼300 m.w.e.) corresponding to a mean muon energy of 32.1 ± 2.0 GeV (63.7 ± 5.5 GeV). Comparing the data to a detailed simulation of the 9Li and 8He decays, the contribution of the 8He radioisotope at both detectors is found to be compatible with zero. The observed 9Li yields in the near and far detectors are 5.51 ± 0.51 and 7.90 ± 0.51, respectively, in units of 10−8 μ −1g−1cm2. The shallow overburdens of the near and far detectors give a unique insight when combined with measurements by KamLAND and Borexino to give the first multi-experiment, data driven relationship between the 9Li yield and the mean muon energy according to the power law Y = Y 0 E μ / 1 GeV α ¯ $$ Y = {Y}_0{\left(\left\langle {E}_{\mu}\right\rangle /1\ GeV\right)}^{\overline{\alpha}} $$ , giving α ¯ = 0.72 ± 0.06 $$ \overline{\alpha} = 0.72 \pm 0.06 $$ and Y 0 = (0.43 ± 0.11) × 10−8 μ −1g−1cm2. This relationship gives future liquid scintillator based experiments the ability to predict their cosmogenic 9Li background rates.

Abstract: Our article shows first experience of using capsule endoscopy for examination of small bowel’s lesions in case of radiation therapy and chemotherapy in patients with Hodgkin lymphoma. We try to compare these changes with modern theories of normal tissues response to radiation therapy and chemotherapy. The investigation revealed that more than a half of the patients (58%) had not any clinical symptoms of small bowel iatrogenic lesions, including potentially dangerous late strictures.

Abstract: The tin dioxide (SnO2) films doped with bismuth by means of magnetron sputtering of semiconductor two-phase target and powder BiO2 as source of Bi were produced. The effect of bismuth dope concentration variation on the microstructure, electrophysical and gas-sensing properties was investigated. It has been found, that films consist of crystalline rods with diameter of 21±2 nm and length of 120±10 nm. Bismuth doping provided decrease in signal timing drift of acetone sensor in analyzed probe. Sensitivity to acetone vapor of the sample derived from targets with 0.01% bismuth oxide concentration increase almost by 10 times (up to 850) in comparison with undoped film at 300°С. Based on the obtained experimental data the mechanism of bismuth dope influence on electrical and gas-sensing properties of produced tin dioxide films was evaluated. Obtained results have shown capability the use of bismuth doped dioxide tin films for development of saturated acetone vapor sensors.

12. Interpretation of First Detection of Solar Neutrinos from CNO Cycle with Borexino

Abstract: The Borexino collaboration observed an excess of the counting rate over the expected counting rate of events from CNO-ν. This result is consistent with the prediction of the Hydridic Earth Model on the contribution of 40K geo-antineutrino scattering on electrons to single Borexino events. The proportion of potassium in the Earth 1.5 ± 1.0% of the Earth’s mass is the most likely value that provides the observed excess of the counting rate.

Abstract: A model is proposed in which the electrical voltage measured between the electrodes in Lake Baikal is a consequence of two effects: electrochemical processes near the electrodes and a positive charge current flowing through the lake. The electrochemical component of the voltage in the case of lead electrodes arises due to the difference in concentrations of carbonate anion— $${\text{CO}}_{3}^{{2 - }}$$ at different depths. In the case of the use of chlorine-silver electrodes, only the effect of the positive charge current flowing through the lake is measured. We proposed an interpretation of an increase of electrical voltage registered in Lake Baikal during an earthquake in August 2008. The reason for the increase in voltage is the release of positively charged hydrogen-containing gases from the Earth’s interior.

Abstract: Because of a high energy of the neutrinoless double-beta decay (0ν2β) of the isotope 150Nd and a high value of the daughter-nucleus charge Zf, 150Nd is one of the most promising isotopes for 0ν2β-decay searches. A 150Nd-containing detector on the basis of a liquid organic scintillator permits employing large isotope masses. Requirements on the radiation purity of the neodymium sample used are determined. The possible design of a large-scale detector of this type and expected results are considered.

Abstract: New approaches to optimizing a magnetorheological transformer are considered. The influence of a rotating magnetic field on the sedimentation of ferromagnetic particles in a magnetorheological fluid is investigated. It proves expedient to use an additional choke channel between the coaxial cylinders in transformer design.

Abstract: A θ oscillation analysis based on the observed antineutrino rates at the Double Chooz far and near detectors for different reactor power conditions is presented. This approach provides a so far unique simultaneous determination of θ and the total background rates without relying on any assumptions on the specific background contributions. The analysis comprises 865 days of data collected in both detectors with at least one reactor in operation. The oscillation results are enhanced by the use of 24.06 days (12.74 days) of reactor-off data in the far (near) detector. The analysis considers the ν¯ interactions up to a visible energy of 8.5 MeV, using the events at higher energies to build a cosmogenic background model considering fast-neutrons interactions and Li decays. The background-model-independent determination of the mixing angle yields sin(2θ) = 0.094 ± 0.017, being the best-fit total background rates fully consistent with the cosmogenic background model. A second oscillation analysis is also performed constraining the total background rates to the cosmogenic background estimates. While the central value is not significantly modified due to the consistency between the reactor-off data and the background estimates, the addition of the background model reduces the uncertainty on θ to 0.015. Along with the oscillation results, the normalization of the anti-neutrino rate is measured with a precision of 0.86%, reducing the 1.43% uncertainty associated to the expectation. Abstract: We present a search for signatures of neutrino mixing of electron anti-neutrinos with additional hypothetical sterile neutrino flavors using the Double Chooz experiment. The search is based on data from 5 years of operation of Double Chooz, including 2 years in the two-detector configuration. The analysis is based on a profile likelihood, i.e.\ comparing the data to the model prediction of disappearance in a data-to-data comparison of the two respective detectors. The analysis is optimized for a model of three active and one sterile neutrino. It is sensitive in the typical mass range $5 \cdot 10^{-3} $ eV$^2 \lesssim \Delta m^2_{41} \lesssim 3\cdot 10^{-1} $ eV$^2$ for mixing angles down to $\sin^2 2\theta_{14} \gtrsim 0.02$. No significant disappearance additionally to the conventional disappearance related to $\theta_{13} $ is observed and correspondingly exclusion bounds on the sterile mixing parameter $\theta_{14} $ as function of $ \Delta m^2_{41} $ are obtained., Comment: accepted for publication by EPJC

Abstract: The heat flux from the Earth’s interior and its connection with the number of neutrinos recorded by detectors at the Earth’s surface are discussed. The values predicted for the geoneutrino fluxes may be matched with experimental data, but the observed flux of the Earth’s internal heat requires the presence of a larger amount of radioactive elements. The amount of uranium and thorium within the Earth is constrained by measurements performed with the aid of modern geoneutrino detectors. This makes it possible to explain completely a flux of 50 TW. There are indications that the flux from the Earth’s interior is 200 to 250 TW. Such a flux could be explained only by the presence of a substantially larger amount of potassium in the Earth. In order to determine precisely the heat flux from the Earth’s interior, it is necessary to measure completely the flux of antineutrinos from all heat-releasing isotopes, including the flux of neutrinos from 40K decay. Possibly, this flux has already been observed at the Borexino detector.

Abstract: A setup has been developed for studying ultralow 14C concentrations in liquid scintillator samples for a large neutrino detector. The 14C concentrations in a liquid scintillator based on linear alkyl benzene, the background counting rates, and the spectra of particle energies deposited in the technological scintillator sample have been measured. The ratio 14C/12C = (1.41 ± 0.12) × 10–16 has been obtained. A model of the γ-ray background has been developed, with which it is possible to extract the energy spectrum of 14C and reduce the systematic uncertainty of measurements.

Abstract: Predictions of geo-neutrino fluxes and the Earth’s internal heat flux made by the Hydride Earth model are discussed. The prediction of geo-neutrino fluxes can be consistent with experimental measured fluxes. The predicted value of the Earth’s internal heat flux is significantly larger than the value experimentally obtained under the assumption that the main mode of heat transport is thermal conductivity. We consider another mode of heat transport in the Earth’s crust: heat transport by hot gases created in the Earth’s crust at great depth. We discuss also experimental data supporting this idea, particularly the temperature profiles obtained in the Kola superdeep borehole.

Abstract: New approaches to optimization of the parameters of a magnetorheological transformer are considered. The influence of the vortex magnetic field on the sedimentation of magnetic particles in a magnetorheological fluid changing its viscosity under the influence of an alternating magnetic field is considered. It is shown that it is advisable besides one throttle channel to enter an additional channel between coaxial cylinders, controlled by the rotating vortex magnetic field. The analysis of the constructed mathematical model revealed that with increasing the frequency of the fundamental harmonic of the input vibration signal, there is a frequency modulation of the controlling magnetic field.

Abstract: Current–voltage (I–V) characteristics of conductance in multigrain layers of submicron particles of silicon, gallium arsenide, indium arsenide, and indium antimonide have been studied. Nanoparticles of all semiconductors were obtained by processing initial single crystals in a ball mill and applied after sedimentation onto substrates by means of electrodeposition. Detailed analysis of the I–V curves of electrodeposited layers shows that their behavior is determined by the mechanism of intergranular tunneling emission from near-surface electron states of submicron particles. Parameters of this emission process have been determined. The proposed multigrain semiconductor structures can be used in gas sensors, optical detectors, IR imagers, etc.

Abstract: Investigation of the Earth’s inner parts requires developing new methods. It is well known that atmospheric neutrinos traverse the Earth, undergoing virtually no interaction. The change in the neutrino flux is due exclusively to neutrino oscillations, which are enhanced by the effect of Earth’s matter. At the present time, there are two projects outside Russia (PINGU and ORCA) that are aimed at detecting atmospheric neutrinos that traversed the Earth, which are supposed to be used for purposes of Earth’s tomography. The creation of a large neutrino detector on the basis of a liquid scintillator is planned at the BaksanNeutrino Observatory (Institute for Nuclear Research, Russian Academy of Sciences) in the North Caucasus. After testing this detector, there will arise the possibility of employing it as part of the worldwide network of neutrino detectors for studying the Earth’s inner parts.

Abstract: Thin tin oxide films were fabricated by reactive RF magnetron sputtering. It was shown that the films possess gas sensitivity to ethanol vapor at 38°C. Measurements of the morphology and cleavage inner structure of the samples by atomic-force and scanning electron microscopy demonstrate that the films are composed of nanodimensional rod-like grains oriented normally to the substrate. The grains are separated by pores piercing the whole film. It was found that the grain diameter distribution is normal logarithmic one with several centers related as small integers, which indicates that the grains coalesce. The minimum grain size of 6 nm might correspond to the critical nucleus size under the used conditions of film deposition.

Abstract: Based on the hydridic Earth model, we propose a hydridic model of the Earth’s electric field. The model predicts that the negative electrode of the Earth’s capacitor is located under the Earth’s crust and the Earth’s fluids carry a positive charge. We have observed an excess of positive charge in the Earth’s crust down to kilometer depths. The model explains the unitary variation of the fair-weather atmospheric electric field strength, the change in atmospheric electric field strength and the precipitation of high-energy electrons during earthquakes.

Abstract: We have studied the phase composition of thin polycrystalline tin oxide films deposited on silicon substrates by reactive RF magnetron sputtering. The films are sensitive to ethanol vapors at 38°C. They consist of SnO2 crystallites with the average grain size of about 7 nm, covered with a nanodimensional layer of amorphous SnO phase. It was found that the volume fraction of the former phase is about 95% and that of the latter phase is about 5%. Calculations of the film texture indicate the predominant growth of SnO2 crystals along 〈110〉, 〈211〉, and 〈310〉 crystal directions perpendicular to the substrate.

Abstract: Borexino collaboration announced the observation of CNO neutrinos flux. Its value appeared larger than expected in case of the Sun high metallicity model. This could be regarded as evidence of large potassium content inside the Earth. The potassium abundance can reach (1.5 ± 1.0)% in the whole Earth and the Earth heat flux can be at the level of 200-300 TW. To resolve the problem a new experiment is demanded with a detector similar to Borexino one but better in backgrounds or a detector with another techniques of neutrino measurement, for example on base of 115In.

Abstract: Liquid scintillators are a common choice for neutrino physics experiments, but their capabilities to perform background rejection by scintillation pulse shape discrimination is generally limited in large detectors. This paper describes a novel approach for a pulse shape based event classification developed in the context of the Double Chooz reactor antineutrino experiment. Unlike previous implementations, this method uses the Fourier power spectra of the scintillation pulse shapes to obtain event-wise information. A classification variable built from spectral information was able to achieve an unprecedented performance, despite the lack of optimization at the detector design level. Several examples of event classification are provided, ranging from differentiation between the detector volumes and an efficient rejection of instrumental light noise, to some sensitivity to the particle type, such as stopping muons, ortho-positronium formation, alpha particles as well as electrons and positrons. In combination with other techniques the method is expected to allow for a versatile and more efficient background rejection in the future, especially if detector optimization is taken into account at the design level., 27 pages, 14 figures

Abstract: We discussed the idea of big value of potassium abundance in the Earth. We showed that Borexino single event spectrum permit the potassium abundance up to 2% instead of the CNO neutrino flux contribution. Works [5], [6] introduce the idea that fast α particles are appeared in nuclear processes in solar core plasma. The reactions of these α particles with CNO nuclei can suppress the CNO neutrino flux. We demonstrated the connection between the existence of Earth’s electric field and the big value of 40K geo-neutrino flux because the both phenomena are the sequences from Hydride Earth model.

Abstract: The oscillation results published by the Double Chooz Collaboration in 2011 and 2012 rely on background models substantiated by reactor-on data. In this analysis, we present a background-model-independent measurement of the mixing angle θ13 by including 7.53 days of reactor-off data. A global fit of the observed antineutrino rates for different reactor power conditions is performed, yielding a measurement of both θ13 and the total background rate. The results on the mixing angle are improved significantly by including the reactor-off data in the fit, as it provides a direct measurement of the total background rate. This reactor rate modulation analysis considers antineutrino candidates with neutron captures on both Gd and H, whose combination yields sin2(2θ13)=0.102±0.028(stat.)±0.033(syst.). The results presented in this study are fully consistent with the ones already published by Double Chooz, achieving a competitive precision. They provide, for the first time, a determination of θ13 that does not depend on a background model.

Abstract: The Double Chooz experiment has determined the value of the neutrino oscillation parameter $\theta_{13}$ from an analysis of inverse beta decay interactions with neutron capture on hydrogen. This analysis uses a three times larger fiducial volume than the standard Double Chooz assessment, which is restricted to a region doped with gadolinium (Gd), yielding an exposure of 113.1 GW-ton-years. The data sample used in this analysis is distinct from that of the Gd analysis, and the systematic uncertainties are also largely independent, with some exceptions, such as the reactor neutrino flux prediction. A combined rate- and energy-dependent fit finds $\sin^2 2\theta_{13}=0.097\pm 0.034(stat.) \pm 0.034 (syst.)$, excluding the no-oscillation hypothesis at 2.0 \sigma. This result is consistent with previous measurements of $\sin^2 2\theta_{13}$.

Abstract: Within the period between the years 1988 and 1990, the spectrum of positrons from the inverse-beta-decay reaction on a proton was measured at the Rovno atomic power plant in the course of experiments conducted there. The measured spectrum has the vastest statistics in relation to other neutrino experiments at nuclear reactors and the lowest threshold for positron detection. An experimental reactor-antineutrino spectrum was obtained on the basis of this positron spectrum and was recommended as a reference spectrum. The spectra of individual fissile isotopes were singled out from the measured antineutrino spectrum. These spectra can be used to analyze neutrino experiments performed at nuclear reactors for various compositions of the fuel in the reactor core.

Abstract: A study on cosmic muons has been performed for the two identical near and far neutrino detectors of the Double Chooz experiment, placed at $\sim$120 and $\sim$300 m.w.e. underground respectively, including the corresponding simulations using the MUSIC simulation package. This characterization has allowed to measure the muon flux reaching both detectors to be (3.64 $\pm$ 0.04) $\times$ 10$^{-4}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ for the near detector and (7.00 $\pm$ 0.05) $\times$ 10$^{-5}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ for the far one. The seasonal modulation of the signal has also been studied observing a positive correlation with the atmospheric temperature, leading to an effective temperature coefficient of $\alpha_{T}$ = 0.212 $\pm$ 0.024 and 0.355 $\pm$ 0.019 for the near and far detectors respectively. These measurements, in good agreement with expectations based on theoretical models, represent one of the first measurements of this coefficient in shallow depth installations., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures

Abstract: Using the Double Chooz detector, designed to measure the neutrino mixing angle $\theta_{13}$, the products of $\mu^-$ capture on $^{12}$C, $^{13}$C, $^{14}$N and $^{16}$O have been measured. Over a period of 489.5 days, $2.3\times10^6$ stopping cosmic $\mu^-$ have been collected, of which $1.8\times10^5$ captured on carbon, nitrogen, or oxygen nuclei in the inner detector scintillator or acrylic vessels. The resulting isotopes were tagged using prompt neutron emission (when applicable), the subsequent beta decays, and, in some cases, $\beta$-delayed neutrons. The most precise measurement of the rate of $^{12}\mathrm C(\mu^-,\nu)^{12}\mathrm B$ to date is reported: $6.57^{+0.11}_{-0.21}\times10^{3}\,\mathrm s^{-1}$, or $(17.35^{+0.35}_{-0.59})\%$ of nuclear captures. By tagging excited states emitting gammas, the ground state transition rate to $^{12}$B has been determined to be $5.68^{+0.14}_{-0.23}\times10^3\,\mathrm s^{-1}$. The heretofore unobserved reactions $^{12}\mathrm C(\mu^-,\nu\alpha)^{8}\mathrm{Li}$, $^{13}\mathrm C(\mu^-,\nu\mathrm n\alpha)^{8}\mathrm{Li}$, and $^{13}\mathrm C(\mu^-,\nu\mathrm n)^{12}\mathrm B$ are measured. Further, a population of $\beta$n decays following stopping muons is identified with $5.5\sigma$ significance. Statistics limit our ability to identify these decays definitively. Assuming negligible production of $^{8}$He, the reaction $^{13}\mathrm C(\mu^-,\nu\alpha)^{9}\mathrm{Li}$ is found to be present at the $2.7\sigma$ level. Limits are set on a variety of other processes.

Abstract: The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a 20 kton multi-purpose underground liquid scintillator detector, was proposed with the determination of the neutrino mass hierarchy as a primary physics goal. It is also capable of observing neutrinos from terrestrial and extra-terrestrial sources, including supernova burst neutrinos, diffuse supernova neutrino background, geoneutrinos, atmospheric neutrinos, solar neutrinos, as well as exotic searches such as nucleon decays, dark matter, sterile neutrinos, etc. We present the physics motivations and the anticipated performance of the JUNO detector for various proposed measurements. By detecting reactor antineutrinos from two power plants at 53-km distance, JUNO will determine the neutrino mass hierarchy at a 3-4 sigma significance with six years of running. The measurement of antineutrino spectrum will also lead to the precise determination of three out of the six oscillation parameters to an accuracy of better than 1\%. Neutrino burst from a typical core-collapse supernova at 10 kpc would lead to ~5000 inverse-beta-decay events and ~2000 all-flavor neutrino-proton elastic scattering events in JUNO. Detection of DSNB would provide valuable information on the cosmic star-formation rate and the average core-collapsed neutrino energy spectrum. Geo-neutrinos can be detected in JUNO with a rate of ~400 events per year, significantly improving the statistics of existing geoneutrino samples. The JUNO detector is sensitive to several exotic searches, e.g. proton decay via the $p\to K^++\bar\nu$ decay channel. The JUNO detector will provide a unique facility to address many outstanding crucial questions in particle and astrophysics. Abstract: The double-mass scheme of a dynamic damper, in which an inertial transducer is placed between an object and the damper, has been considered. The damper’s frequency properties are investigated. Resonant and antiresonant (damping) frequency distribution diagrams are constructed, depending on parameters. It is shown that, if the inertial transducer is lacking, the damping frequency adjoins the upper resonant frequency, and, when the inertial transducer’s mass increases, the damping frequency adjoins the lower resonant frequency. Examples of implementation of inertial transducers using mechanical and hydraulic devices are presented.
