Abstract

Abstract The Baikal Gigaton Volume Detector (Baikal-GVD) is a km $$^3$$ 3 -scale neutrino detector currently under construction in Lake Baikal, Russia. The detector consists of several thousand optical sensors arranged on vertical strings, with 36 sensors per string. The strings are grouped into clusters of 8 strings each. Each cluster can operate as a stand-alone neutrino detector. The detector layout is optimized for the measurement of astrophysical neutrinos with energies of $$\sim $$ ∼ 100 TeV and above. Events resulting from charged current interactions of muon (anti-)neutrinos will have a track-like topology in Baikal-GVD. A fast $$\chi ^2$$ χ 2 -based reconstruction algorithm has been developed to reconstruct such track-like events. The algorithm has been applied to data collected in 2019 from the first five operational clusters of Baikal-GVD, resulting in observations of both downgoing atmospheric muons and upgoing atmospheric neutrinos. This serves as an important milestone towards experimental validation of the Baikal-GVD design. The analysis is limited to single-cluster data, favoring nearly-vertical tracks.

2. First report of Altenia mersinella (Lep.: Gelechiidae: Gelechiinae: Litini), a pest of pistachio, from Iran

Abstract

During a survey on pistachio, Pistacia vera L., pests in Isfahan, Iran, in 2015, some lepidopteran larvae living and feeding inside galls of the wrinkling pistachio aphid, Forda hirsuta Mordv., were observed. After laboratory rearing of these larvae, the moths were identified as Altenia mersinella (Staudinger, 1879) (Lep.: Gelechiidae) by the third author. This species has previously been reported from Turkey, Cyprus, Syria, Lebanon and Palestine but it is the first report of this species from Iran. Based on the available literature, this is also the first record of a host plant for this species.

Abstract

Neutrino astronomy offers a novel view of the non-thermal Universe and is complementary to other astronomical disciplines. The field has seen rapid progress in recent years, including the first detection of astrophysical neutrinos in the TeV-PeV energy range by IceCube and the first identified extragalactic neutrino source (TXS 0506+056). Further discoveries are aimed for with new cubic-kilometer telescopes in the Northern Hemisphere: Baikal-GVD, in Lake Baikal, and KM3NeT-ARCA, in the Mediterranean sea. The construction of Baikal-GVD proceeds as planned; the detector currently includes over 2000 optical modules arranged on 56 strings, providing an effective volume of 0.35 km$^3$. Abstract

The Baikal-GVD deep underwater neutrino experiment participates in the international multi-messenger program to detect the astrophysical sources of high- and ultrahigh-energy cosmic-ray particles, being at the stage of array deployment and a step-by-step increase of the telescope’s effective volume to the scale of a cubic kilometer. At present, the telescope consists of seven clusters containing 2016 photodetectors. The effective volume of the detector has reached 0.35 km $${}^{3}$$ for the selection of shower events from neutrino interactions in Baikal water. The experimental data have been accumulated in a continuous exposure mode since 2015, allowing a prompt data analysis and a celestial-sphere monitoring program to be implemented in real time. We discuss the structure of the data acquisition system, describe the physical event reconstruction procedure in the mode of fast response to alerts, and present the results of our analysis of nine alerts from the polar IceCube telescope from early September to late October 2020.

Abstract

Baikal-GVD is a deep-underwater neutrino detector of cubic-kilometer scale. It is designed to detect astrophysical neutrinos up to multi-PeV energies and beyond. The deployment of this facility began in spring 2015. Since April 2020, the detector includes seven clusters, each consisting of eight strings carrying in total 288 optical modules located at depths of 750 to 1275 m. By the end of the first phase of construction of the detector in 2024, it is planned to deploy 15 clusters, whereby an effective volume of 0.75 km $${}^{3}$$ for detecting high-energy cascades would be reached. The design and status of the Baikal-GVD detector are described in the present article along with selected results of data analysis.

15. Gadolinium-Hematoporphyrin: new potential MRI contrast agent for detection of breast cancer cell line (MCF-7)

Abstract

Background: Gadolinium-porphyrins have been synthesized and are currently being investigated as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents. This study aimed to synthesize Gd-hematoporphyrin and applicate it for in vitro detection of breast cancer cell line (MCF-7). Methods: The naturally occurring porphyrin (hematoporphyrin) was inserted with gadolinium (III) nitrate hexahydrate to yield Gd-H. T1 relaxation times and signal enhancement of the contrast agents were presented, and the results were compared. UV spectrophotometer measured the attachment of Gd to the cell membrane of MCF-7. Results: Most of gadolinium chloride (GdCl3) was found in the washing solution, indicate that it didn`t fixed to the breast cell membranes during incubation. Gd-DTPA showed some uptake into the MCF-7 cell membranes with incubation, however, its uptake was significantly lower than Gd-H. Conclusion: Good cell memberan uptake of Gd-porphyrin is comparable to controls, indicating selective delivery it to the breast cell line and considerable potency in diagnostic MR imaging for detection of breast cancer. Abstract

The Baikal Gigaton Volume Detector (Baikal-GVD) is a km$^3$-scale neutrino detector currently under construction in Lake Baikal, Russia. The detector currently consists of 2304 optical modules arranged on 64 vertical strings. Further extension of the array is planned for March 2022. The data from the partially complete array have been analyzed using a $\chi^2$-based track reconstruction algorithm. After suppression of the downward-going atmospheric muon background, a flux of upward-going neutrino events is observed, dominated by the atmospheric neutrinos. Abstract

Baikal-GVD is a kilometer scale neutrino telescope currently under construction in Lake Baikal. Due to water currents in Lake Baikal, individual photomultiplier housings are mobile and can drift away from their initial position. In order to accurately determine the coordinates of the photomultipliers, the telescope is equipped with an acoustic positioning system. The system consists of a network of acoustic modems, installed along the telescope strings and uses acoustic trilateration to determine the coordinates of individual modems. Abstract

Baikal-GVD is a gigaton-scale neutrino observatory under construction in Lake Baikal. It currently produces about 100 GB of data every day. For their automatic processing, the Baikal Analysis and Reconstruction software (BARS) was developed. At the moment, it includes such stages as hit extraction from PMT waveforms, assembling events from raw data, assigning timestamps to events, determining the position of the optical modules using an acoustic positioning system, data quality monitoring, muon track and cascade reconstruction, as well as the alert signal generation. These stages are implemented as C++ programs which are executed sequentially one after another and can be represented as a directed acyclic graph. The most resource-consuming programs run in parallel to speed up processing. A separate Python package based on the luigi package is responsible for program execution control. Additional information such as the program execution status and run metadata are saved into a central database and then displayed on the dashboard. Abstract

Baikal-GVD is a km$^3$-scale neutrino telescope being constructed in Lake Baikal. Muon and partially tau (anti)neutrino interactions near the detector through the W$^{\pm}$-boson exchange are accompanied by muon tracks. Reconstructed direction of the track is arguably the most precise probe of the neutrino direction attainable in Cerenkov neutrino telescopes. Muon reconstruction techniques adopted by Baikal-GVD are discussed in the present report. Performance of the muon reconstruction is studied using realistic Monte Carlo simulation of the detector. The algorithms are applied to real data from Baikal-GVD and the results are compared with simulations. The performance of the neutrino selection based on a boosted decision tree classifier is discussed., 8 pages, 5 figures. Woźniak, Jilberto Zamora-Saa, Gamification is known to enhance users’ participation in education and research projects that follow the citizen science paradigm. The Cosmic Ray Extremely Distributed Observatory (CREDO) experiment is designed for the large-scale study of various radiation forms that continuously reach the Earth from space, collectively known as cosmic rays. The CREDO Detector app relies on a network of involved users and is now working worldwide across phones and other CMOS sensor-equipped devices. To broaden the user base and activate current users, CREDO extensively uses the gamification solutions like the periodical Particle Hunters Competition. However, the adverse effect of gamification is that the number of artefacts, i.e., signals unrelated to cosmic ray detection or openly related to cheating, substantially increases. To tag the artefacts appearing in the CREDO database we propose the method based on machine learning. The approach involves training the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to recognise the morphological difference between signals and artefacts. As a result we obtain the CNN-based trigger which is able to mimic the signal vs. artefact assignments of human annotators as closely as possible. To enhance the method, the input image signal is adaptively thresholded and then transformed using Daubechies wavelets. In this exploratory study, we use wavelet transforms to amplify distinctive image features. As a result, we obtain a very good recognition ratio of almost 99% for both signal and artefacts. The proposed solution allows eliminating the manual supervision of the competition process.

Abstract

Cosmic Ray Ensembles (CRE) are very large, yet not observed particle cascades initiated above the Earth atmosphere. Such cascades could be formed both within classical models (e.g. products of photon-photon interactions) and exotic scenarios (e.g. result of decay of Super Heavy Dark Matter particles and subsequent interactions). Some of CRE might have a significant spatial extent which could serve as a unique signature detectable with the existing cosmic ray infrastructure taken as a network of detectors. This signature would be composed of a number of air showers with parallel axes. An obvious, although yet not probed, CRE „detection horizon” can be located somewhere between an air shower induced by an CRE composed of tightly collimated particles (preshower effect), and undetectable CRE composed of particles spread so widely that only one of them have a chance to reach Earth. Probing the CRE horizon with a global approach to the cosmic ray data, as proposed by the newly formed Cosmic Ray Extremely Distributed Observatory (CREDO), defines an extensive scientific program oriented on the search for physics manifestations at largest energies known, with potential impact on ultra-high energy astrophysics, the physics of fundamental particle interactions and cosmology. In this talk the current status and perspectives of CREDO will be summarized, with an open invitation for the colleagues interested in a global approach to cosmic ray studies, and in particular in observing and investigating multi-primary cosmic ray events such as CRE.

Abstract

The high-energy muon neutrino events of the IceCube telescope, that are triggered as neutrino alerts in one of two probability ranks of astrophysical origin, "gold" and "bronze", have been followed up by the Baikal-GVD in a fast quasi-online mode since September 2020. Search for correlations between alerts and GVD events reconstructed in two modes, muon-track and cascades (electromagnetic or hadronic showers), for the time windows $ \pm $ 1 h and $ \pm $ 12 h does not indicate statistically significant excess of the measured events over the expected number of background events. Abstract

Cosmic Ray Ensembles (CRE) are yet not observed groups of cosmic rays with a common primary interaction vertex or the same parent particle. One of the processes capable of initiating identifiable CRE is an interaction of an ultra-high energy (UHE) photon with the solar magnetic field which results in an electron pair production and the subsequent synchrotron radiation. The resultant electromagnetic cascade forms a very characteristic line-like front of a very small width ($\sim$ meters), stretching from tens of thousands to even many millions of kilometers. In this contribution we present the results of applying a toy model to simulate detections of such CRE at the ground level with an array of ideal detectors of different dimensions. The adopted approach allows us to assess the CRE detection feasibility for a specific configuration of a detector array. The process of initiation and propagation of an electromagnetic cascade originated from an UHE photon passing near the Sun, as well as the resultant particle distribution on ground, were simulated using the CORSIKA program with the PRESHOWER option, both modified accordingly. The studied scenario results in photons forming a cascade that extends even over tens of millions of kilometers when it arrives at the top of the Earth's atmosphere, and the photon energies span practically the whole cosmic ray energy spectrum. The topology of the signal consists of very extended CRE shapes, and the characteristic, very much elongated disk-shape of the particle distribution on ground illustrates the potential for identification of CRE of this type., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures. Abstract

The Baikal-GVD deep underwater neutrino experiment participates in the international multi-messenger program on discovering the astrophysical sources of high energy fluxes of cosmic particles, while being at the stage of deployment with a gradual increase of its effective volume to the scale of a cubic kilometer. In April 2021 the effective volume of the detector has been reached 0.4 km3 for cascade events with energy above 100 TeV generated by neutrino interactions in Lake Baikal. The alarm system in real-time monitoring of the celestial sphere was launched at the beginning of 2021, that allows to form the alerts of two ranks like "muon neutrino" and "VHE cascade". Recent results of fast follow-up searches for coincidences of Baikal-GVD high energy cascades with ANTARES/TAToO high energy neutrino alerts and IceCube GCN messages will be presented, as well as preliminary results of searches for high energy neutrinos in coincidence with the magnetar SGR 1935+2154 activity in period of radio and gamma burst in 2020., Comment: Submitted to Proc. of the 37th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC 2021), PoS-0946, July 12th -- 23rd, 2021, Online -- Berlin, Germany. 8 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Propagation of ultra-high energy photons in the solar magnetosphere gives rise to cascades comprising thousands of photons. We study the cascade development using Monte Carlo simulations and find that the photons in the cascades are spatially extended over millions of kilometers on the plane distant from the Sun by 1 AU. We estimate the chance of detection considering upper limits from current cosmic rays observatories in order to provide an optimistic estimate rate of 0.002 events per year from a chosen ring-shaped region around the Sun. We compare results from simulations which use two models of the solar magnetic field, and show that although signatures of such cascades are different for the models used, for practical detection purpose in the ground-based detectors, they are similar.

Abstract

An analysis is presented of elastic $P$-wave $\ensuremath{\pi}\ensuremath{\pi}$ phase shifts and inelasticities up to 2 GeV, aimed at identifying the corresponding ${J}^{PC}={1}^{\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{-}}$ excited $\ensuremath{\rho}$ resonances and focusing on the $\ensuremath{\rho}(1250)$ vs $\ensuremath{\rho}(1450)$ controversy. The approach employs an improved parametrization in terms of a manifestly unitary and analytic three-channel $S$ matrix with its complex-energy pole positions. The included channels are $\ensuremath{\pi}\ensuremath{\pi}$, $\ensuremath{\rho}2\ensuremath{\pi}$, and $\ensuremath{\rho}\ensuremath{\rho}$, the latter two being effective in the sense that they mimic several experimentally observed decay modes with nearby thresholds. In an alternative fit, the $\ensuremath{\rho}2\ensuremath{\pi}$ mode is replaced by $\ensuremath{\omega}\ensuremath{\pi}$, which is also an experimentally relevant channel. The improvement with respect to prior work amounts to the enforcement of maximum crossing symmetry through once-subtracted dispersion relations called GKPY equations. A separate analysis concerns the pion electromagnetic form factor, which again demonstrates the enormous importance of guaranteeing unitarity and analyticity when dealing with very broad and highly inelastic resonances. In the case of $\ensuremath{\rho}(1250)$ vs $\ensuremath{\rho}(1450)$, the failure to do so is shown to give rise to an error in the predicted mass of about 170 MeV. A clear picture emerges from these analyses, identifying five vector $\ensuremath{\rho}$ states below 2 GeV, viz. $\ensuremath{\rho}(770)$, $\ensuremath{\rho}(1250)$, $\ensuremath{\rho}(1450)$, $\ensuremath{\rho}(1600)$, and $\ensuremath{\rho}(1800)$, with $\ensuremath{\rho}(1250)$ being indisputably the most important excited $\ensuremath{\rho}$ resonance. The stability of the fits as well as the imposition of unitarity, analyticity, and approximate crossing symmetry in the analyses lend very strong support to these assignments. The possibly far-reaching consequences for meson spectroscopy are discussed.

Abstract

Background: While there is a long history of measuring death and disability from injuries, modern research methods must account for the wide spectrum of disability that can occur in an injury, and must provide estimates with sufficient demographic, geographical and temporal detail to be useful for policy makers. The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2017 study used methods to provide highly detailed estimates of global injury burden that meet these criteria. Methods: In this study, we report and discuss the methods used in GBD 2017 for injury morbidity and mortality burden estimation. In summary, these methods included estimating cause-specific mortality for every cause of injury, and then estimating incidence for every cause of injury. Non-fatal disability for each cause is then calculated based on the probabilities of suffering from different types of bodily injury experienced. Results: GBD 2017 produced morbidity and mortality estimates for 38 causes of injury. Estimates were produced in terms of incidence, prevalence, years lived with disability, cause-specific mortality, years of life lost and disability-adjusted life-years for a 28-year period for 22 age groups, 195 countries and both sexes. Conclusions: GBD 2017 demonstrated a complex and sophisticated series of analytical steps using the largest known database of morbidity and mortality data on injuries. GBD 2017 results should be used to help inform injury prevention policy making and resource allocation. Abstract

Baikal-GVD (Gigaton Volume Detector) is a neutrino telescope located in pure water of Lake Baikal. At the current stage (season 2021), detector is composed of 2304 optical modules arranged in 8 clusters. In searching for neutrino cascade events, light patterns produced via discrete stochastic energy losses along muon tracks create the most abundant background. Methods to separate cascade-like events from tracks and neutrino cascades in a single cluster have been developed and optimized. One of the method tries to find the maximum number of track hits amongst cascade hits, which are present in the muon bundle event. Other ones rely on the distributions of charges and positions of hits on optical modules associated with cascade events. All suppression methods were optimized by the Monte Carlo simulation datasets.

Abstract

The large-scale deep underwater Cherenkov neutrino telescopes like Baikal-GVD, ANTARES or KM3NeT, require calibration and testing methods of their optical modules. These methods usually include laser-based systems which allow to check the telescope responses to the light and for real-time monitoring of the optical parameters of water such as absorption and scattering lengths, which show seasonal changes in natural reservoirs of water. We will present a testing method of a laser calibration system and a set of dedicated tools developed for Baikal- GVD, which includes a specially designed and built, compact, portable, and reconfigurable scanning station. This station is adapted to perform fast quality tests of the underwater laser sets just before their deployment in the telescope structure, even on ice, without darkroom. The testing procedure includes the energy stability test of the laser device, 3D scan of the light emission from the diffuser and attenuation test of the optical elements of the laser calibration system. The test bench consists primarily of an automatic mechanical scanner with a movable Si detector, beam splitter with a reference Si detector and, optionally, Q-switched diode-pumped solid-state laser used for laboratory scans of the diffusers. The presented test bench enables a three-dimensional scan of the light emission from diffusers, which are designed to obtain the isotropic distribution of photons around the point of emission. The results of the measurement can be easily shown on a 3D plot immediately after the test and may be also implemented to a dedicated program simulating photons propagation in water, which allows to check the quality of the diffuser in the scale of the Baikal-GVD telescope geometry., Comment: Presented at the VLVnT - Very Large Volume Neutrino Telescope Workshop, Valencia, 18-21 May 2021

Abstract

The Baikal-GVD is a neutrino telescope situated in the deepest freshwater lake in the world — Lake Baikal. The design of the Baikal-GVD trigger system allows also to study the ambient light of the lake. The analysis of the optical light activity of Baikal water, particularly, time and spatial variations of the luminescence activity for data collected in years 2018, 2019, and 2020 is presented. For the first time we observed highly luminescent layer moving upwards with maximal speed of 28 m/day in January 2021.

Abstract

Muons and other ionizing radiation produced by cosmic rays and radiative decays affect CMOS/CCD sensor. When particles colliding with sensors atoms cause specific kind of noise on images recorded by cameras. We present a concept and preliminary implementation of method for recognizing those events and algorithms for image processing and their classification by machine learning. Our method consists of analyzing the shape of traces present in images recorded by a camera sensor and metadata related to an image like camera model, GPS location of camera, vertical and horizontal orientation of a camera sensor, timestamp of image acquisition, and other events recognized near-by sensors. The so created feature vectors are classified as either a muon-like event, an electron-like event or the other event, possibly noise. For muon-like events our method estimates azimuth of a muon track. Source of the data is database of CREDO (Cosmic-Ray Extremely Distributed Observatory) project and ESO (European Southern Observatory) archives. The telescope dark frames from ESO are analysed. CREDO project collected so far over 2 millions images of events from many kinds of cameralike: smartphones camera, laptop webcams and Internet of Things cameras localised around the globe.

Abstract

The Cosmic-Ray Extremely Distributed Observatory (CREDO) uses the hunt for particle cascades from deep space as a vehicle for a unique "bottom-up" approach to scientific research. By engaging the non-specialist public of all ages as "citizen scientists" we create opportunities for lifelong learning for individuals as well as for cooperation and the sharing of common educational tools amongst institutions. The discoveries of these citizen scientists will feed directly into a pioneering new area of scientific research oriented on Cosmic Ray Ensembles (CRE). The detection (or non-detection) of such particle groups promises to open up a new method for exploring our universe, and a new channel on the multi-messenger stage, oriented on both astro- and geo-investigations. Abstract

We present data on the luminescence of the Baikal water medium collected with the Baikal-GVD neutrino telescope. This three-dimensional array of light sensors allows the observation of time and spatial variations of the ambient light field. We report on observation of an increase of luminescence activity in 2016 and 2018. On the contrary, we observed practically constant optical noise in 2017. An agreement has been found between two independent optical noise data sets. These are data collected with online monitoring system and the trigger system of the cluster.

Abstract

Multi-messenger astronomy is a powerful tool to study the physical processes driving the non-thermal Universe. A combination of observations in cosmic rays, neutrinos, photons of all wavelengths and gravitational waves is expected. The alert system of the Baikal-GVD detector under construction will allow for a fast, on-line reconstruction of neutrino events recorded by the Baikal-GVD telescope and - if predefined conditions are satisfied - for the formation of an alert message to other communities. The preliminary results of searches for high-energy neutrinos in coincidence with GW170817/GRB170817A using the cascade mode of neutrino detection are discussed. Two Baikal-GVD clusters were operating during 2017. The zenith angle of NGC 4993 at the detection time of the GW170817 was 93.3 degrees. No events spatially coincident with GRB170817A were found. Given the non-detection of neutrino events associated with GW170817, upper limits on the neutrino fluence were established.

Abstract

Baikal-GVD is a next generation, kilometer-scale neutrino telescope currently under construction in Lake Baikal. GVD is formed by multi-megaton subarrays (clusters) and is designed for the detection of astrophysical neutrino fluxes at energies from a few TeV up to 100 PeV. The design of Baikal-GVD allows one to search for astrophysical neutrinos with flux values measured by IceCube already at early phases of the array construction. We present here preliminary results of the search for high-energy neutrinos via the cascade mode obtained in 2015 and 2016.

Abstract

The Cosmic-Ray Extremely Distributed Observatory (CREDO) is a project dedicated to global studies of extremely extended cosmic-ray phenomena, the cosmic-ray ensembles (CRE), beyond the capabilities of existing detectors and observatories. Up to date cosmic-ray research has been focused on detecting single air showers, while the search for ensembles of cosmic-rays, which may spread over a significant fraction of the Earth, is a scientific terra incognita. The key idea of CREDO is to combine existing cosmic-ray detectors (large professional arrays, educational instruments, individual detectors, such as smartphones, etc.) into a worldwide network, thus enabling a global analysis. The second goal of CREDO involves a large number of participants (citizen science!), assuring the geographical spread of the detectors and managing manpower necessary to deal with vast amount of data to search for evidence for cosmic-ray ensembles. Abstract

The search for Cosmic-Ray Ensembles (CRE), groups of correlated cosmic rays that might be distributed over very large areas, even of the size of the planet, requires a globally spread and dense network of detectors, as proposed by the Cosmic-Ray Extremely Distributed Observatory (CREDO) Collaboration. This proposal motivates an effort towards exploring the potential of using even very much diversified detection technologies within one system, with detection units located even in hard-to-reach places, where, nevertheless, the sensors could work independently - without human intervention. For these reasons we have developed a dedicated communication solution enabling the connection of many different types of detectors, in a range of environments. The proposed data transmission system uses radio waves as an information carrier on the 169MHz frequency band in a contrast to the typical commercially used frequencies in a IoT systems (868MHz). The connectivity within the system is based on the star topology, which ensures the least energy consumption. The solution is now being prepared to being implemented using the prototype detection system based on the CosmicWatch open hardware design: a portable, pocket size, and economy particle detector using the scintillation technique. Abstract

Baikal-GVD is a cubic-kilometer scale neutrino telescope, which is currently under construction in Lake Baikal. Baikal-GVD is an array of optical modules arranged in clusters. The first cluster of the array has been deployed and commissioned in April 2015. To date, Baikal-GVD consists of 3 clusters with 864 optical modules. One of the vital conditions for optimal energy, position and direction reconstruction of the detected particles is the time calibration of the detector. In this article, we describe calibration equipment and methods used in Baikal-GVD and demonstrate the accuracy of the calibration procedures.

Abstract

Lake Baikal in Siberia is one of the most interesting lakes in the world. It is the world’s largest reservoir of fresh surface water and home to several hundred endemic species. At the same time it harboured the first underwater neutrino telescope NT200, now followed by its successor Baikal-GVD, a cubic-kilometre scale neutrino telescope. Within the Baikal Neutrino project a number of methods and instruments have been designed to study various processes in the Baikal ecosystem. Hundreds of optical, acoustic and other sensors allow for long-term 3D monitoring of water parameters like temperature, inherent optical properties or the intensity of water luminescence, as well as processes like sedimentation or deep water renewal. Here we present selected results of the interdisciplinary environmental studies.

Abstract

We study the feasibility of detecting preshower initiated by ultra-high energy photons using Monte-Carlo simulations of nearly horizontal air showers for the example of the La Palma site of the Cherenkov Telescope Array. We investigate the efficiency of multivariate analysis in correctly identifying preshower events initiated by 40 EeV photons and cosmic-ray dominated background simulated in the energy range 10 TeV -- 10 EeV. The effective areas for such kind of events are also investigated and event rate predictions related to different ultra-high energy photons production models are presented. While the expected number of preshowers from diffuse emission of UHE photon for 30 hours of observation is estimated around $3.3\times10^{-5}$ based on the upper limits put by the Pierre Auger Observatory, this value is at the level of $2.7\times10^{-4}$ ($5.7\times 10^{-5}$) when considering the upper limits of the Pierre Auger Observatory (Telescope Array) on UHE photon point sources. However, UHE photon emission may undergo possible "boosting" due to gamma-ray burst, increasing the expected number of preshower events up to 0.17 and yielding a minimum required flux of $\sim 0.2$ $\mathrm{km^{-2}yr^{-1}}$ to obtain one preshower event, which is about a factor 10 higher than upper limits put by the Pierre Auger Observatory and Telescope Array (0.034 and 0.019 $\mathrm{km^{-2}yr^{-1}}$, respectively)., Comment: 16 pages, 16 figures, 4 tables

Abstract

The Cosmic-Ray Extremely Distributed Observatory (CREDO) is a project dedicated to global studies of extremely extended cosmic-ray phenomena, the cosmic-ray ensembles (CRE), beyond the capabilities of existing detectors and observatories. Up to date cosmic-ray research has been focused on detecting single air showers, while the search for ensembles of cosmic-rays, which may overspread a significant fraction of the Earth, is a scientific terra incognita. Instead of developing and commissioning a completely new global detector infrastructure, CREDO proposes approaching the global cosmic-ray analysis objectives with all types of available detectors, from professional to pocket size, merged into a worldwide network. With such a network it is possible to search for evidences of correlated cosmic-ray ensembles. One of the observables that can be investigated in CREDO is a number of spatially isolated events collected in a small time window which could shed light on fundamental physics issues. The CREDO mission and strategy requires active engagement of a large number of participants, also non-experts, who will contribute to the project by using common electronic devices (e.g. smartphones). Abstract

A definitive species list is the foundation of biodiversity and conservation work. As we deal with massive climatic changes in the Anthropocene, knowing which species make up our diverse ecosystems will be critically important if we wish to protect and restore them.The Lepidoptera, moths and butterflies, are the fourth-largest insect order in terms of global diversity, with approximately 158,000 described species. Here we report the distributions of 5431 species that occur in Canada and Alaska, as well as 53 species that have been reported from the region but not yet verified. Additionally, 19 species are listed as interceptions or unsuccessful introductions, and 52 species are listed as probably occurring in the region.The list is based on records from taxonomic papers, historical regional checklists, and specimen data from collections and online databases. All valid species and their synonyms, and all Nearctic subspecies and synonyms are included, except for butterfly subspecies (and their synonyms) that have never been reported from the region. The list is presented in taxonomic order, with the author, date of description, and original genus provided for each name.

Abstract

A reanalysis of $\ensuremath{\pi}\ensuremath{\pi}$ amplitudes for all important partial waves below about 2 GeV is presented. A set of once subtracted dispersion relations with imposed crossing symmetry condition is used to modify unitary multichannel amplitudes in the $S$, $P$, $D$, and $F$ waves. So far, these specific amplitudes constructed in our works and many other analyses have been fitted only to experimental data and therefore do not fulfill the crossing symmetry condition. In the present analysis, the self-consistent, i.e., unitary and fulfilling the crossing symmetry, amplitudes for the $S$, $P$, $D$, and $F$ waves are formed. The proposed very effective and simple method of modification of the $\ensuremath{\pi}\ensuremath{\pi}$ amplitudes does not change their previous original mathematical structure, and the method can be easily applied in various other analyses.
