Abstract

In this study, a detailed analysis of the use of standardized deformation models is carried out to calculate the design characteristics of reinforced concrete elements, such as crack resistance. For theoretical verification of the values of the moment of cracking, calculation methods based on the use of a nonlinear deformation model are used.A theoretical study of cracking moment using a non-linear deformation model shows that the application of a two-line diagram of concrete deformation allows to obtain the most accurate values of cracking moment.

Abstract

This paper is about a comparative analysis of the requirements of the Russian standard, the standard of the European Union and the PRC for overhead contact wires for electrified high-speed railways. New generation contact wires must have a high level of mechanical, electrical and operational properties. The Russian standard does not regulate the chemical composition of alloys used for the contact wires manufacture. Unlike the standards of the European Union and China, the Russian standard regulates the maximum value of the relative creep. Compositions, mechanical properties, electrical resistivity and recrystallization temperature for the contact wires with a cross section of 120 mm2 are given. The requirements for the material for the contact wire are presented. The need to use more durable conductive materials instead of copper is noted since mechanical loads and operating temperatures are constantly increasing. The values of mechanical properties, recrystallization temperature and creep of contact wires made of copper alloys are given. Based on the analysis results of the literature data and the experiments, alloys of the Cu-Mg system are recommended as a material for the contact wire manufacture for an overhead network system for high-speed railways.

Abstract

The article presents an overview of possible technological schemes to produce an overhead contact wire for railways. Pilot experiments were carried out on the manufacture of a contact wire made of CuMg0.3, CuMg0.4 and CuMg0.5 alloys and having a nominal cross section of 100 mm2. The contact wire was obtained from a continuously cast rod with small section, which was subjected to plastic deformation using the Conform technology and cold drawing of the extruded rod. In the casting process, we encountered the formation of cracks on the cast rod surface and the rods breakage. The inner surface of the graphite bushings of the mold after casting the rod was studied and a thin gray layer was found on the inner surface of the graphite bushings. Areas of the graphite bushing with gray layer were studied by scanning electron microscopy and element-by-element mapping was performed with the selection of a spectrum in the sediment layer area. In order to determine the phase composition of the sediment layer it was analyzed by the method of full-profile analysis of the X-ray diffraction pattern according to Rietveld. X-ray phase analysis showed the CuMg2 and Cu2Mg phases presence. This allowed us to assume a possible mechanism for the formation of the sediment layer. Ultimate tensile strength, elongation and electrical resistivity was determined. Analysis showed that the overhead wires made of CuMg0.3, CuMg0.4, CuMg0.5 alloys meets the requirements of GOST R 55647-2018 for wires made of the second conditional group bronze.

Abstract

The article presents the results of pilot-industrial experiments in the field of manufacturing technology of contact wire made of Cu-Sn alloys. Cast rods with a diameter of 20 mm, made of CuSn0.04, CuSn0.1, CuSn0.2, CuSn0.3, CuSn0.4 alloys, were obtained in a continuous casting plant on an Upcast system. Cast rods were deformed using a Conform technology, and extruded billets with a diameter of 18 and 20 mm were produced, which were subsequently drawn on a shaped contact wire with a cross section of 100 mm2. Cast rods macrostructure and microstructure were studied. The macrostructure quantitative assessment of samples was studied in a cross and longitudinal section. A plot of the effect of the tin content in the alloy on the average grain area in cross section is obtained. An increase in the tin content in the alloy leads to a decrease in the average grain area. An analysis of the rod microstructure in a cross section showed that the structure is a grain of an α-solid solution of tin in copper, and the grain boundaries are thin and clean. After deformation by Conform technology a uniform fine-grained structure is ensured. The effect of the tin content in the alloy on the Brinell hardness of cast billets, made by Conform technology, is determined. An increase in the tin content in the alloy leads to an increase in the hardness of both cast and deformed billets. The microstructure analysis of the contact wire in the cross section is carried out. The mechanical and electrical properties of the contact wire with a cross section of 100 mm2 are determined. An analysis of the results showed when the tin content in the alloy is up to 0.4 wt. %, the required level of mechanical and electrical properties of the contact wire is not provided. It may be necessary to change the size of the initial billet before drawing or to increase the tin content in the alloy more than 0.4 wt. %.

Abstract

Introduction. The purpose of the presented work was to determine the cause of complaints of passengers dissatisfied with the thermal comfort in electric trains equipped with modern air conditioning systems. In order, this work to be done both practical and theoretical research was carried out in two stages. This work includes the estimation of microclimate parameters in cars and passengers thermal comfort parameters. Material and methods. At the first stage, direct measurements of microclimate on passenger seats were conducted while the train was in operation. Subsequent analysis of the obtained figures indicates the average values of the studied parameters to correspond to their normative values. At the second stage, Fanger calculation method of determining passenger comfort or discomfort was used to analyze passengers’ assessment of various microclimatic situations in electric trains, both in local areas and in the salons of cars as a whole. Using the Fanger method, based on the results of theoretical calculations, a diagram was constructed. It contains curves showing the warmth index of passengers under different combinations of air temperature and velocity. Results. PMV indices were calculated by using the first stage measurements. Afterward, passengers heating comfort area was drawn on the diagram. It was made for each car and the passengers’ complaints were taken into consideration. Conclusion. The diagram analysis of passengers heating comfort area location relatively to zero point shows the percentage of dissatisfied passengers and it helps to explain the reason it occurs.

Abstract

Recently, due to the increasing volume of traffic and the lack of specialized transport, new engineering solutions are being sought, one of which is the modernization of the existing fleet of thermos cars to extend their service life. The aim of this study was the hygienic assessment of the modernized thermos car model 16-6894 for its compliance with the current Rules for the carriage of perishable goods by rail. Perishable goods include food products requiring compliance with certain temperature and humidity conditions during storage and transportation. To confirm the compliance of the temperature in the thermos car with the requirements of sanitary and hygienic rules and regulations, a corresponding study was conducted. According to a special program, tests were carried out to determine the time of heating the air in a thermos car using a simulator of deep-frozen products (frozen water) in order to further establish the deadlines for transportation in the summer and transitional periods of the year. The result of the research was the development of computer software that allows predicting the timing of transportation of any frozen food for certain specified conditions.

13. GEANT4 validation for X-ray treatment of wooden cultural heritage artefacts

Abstract

The preservation of cultural heritage is very important. Ionizing radiation is widely used for this purpose and use of gamma irradiation has become common practice in cultural heritage preservation. The number of available electron accelerators is two orders of magnitude greater than for gamma facilities, and many countries do not have gamma facilities. In this work we demonstrate the possibility of using an electron accelerator and X-rays generated from accelerated electrons for radiation treatment of wooden cultural heritage. The GEANT4 toolkit was used for the simulation of the passage of particles through matter. The accuracy of radiation treatment numerical simulation in comparison with experiment was in range of 1.5–11.8%.

Abstract

The article deals with late losses of prestressing of reinforcement due to shrinkage and creep in fine reinforced concrete structures. Creep deformations can several times exceed the elastic straincaused by load. The most common in practice caseof the development of concrete creep is slowly decreased creeping with timewith a rather high initial rate of the development in the first hours after loading. It is typical for stresses that do not exceed the long-term resistance of concrete. Experimental study of deformation of shrinkage and creep of fine-grained concrete allows us to compare the loss of prestressing due to concrete shrinkage and creep. Usually there is an aggregate effect of these factors, which significantly complicates the study of the processes occurring in concrete during long-term exposures. Basically, the results obtained during testing of concrete prisms are used to compare stress-related properties of concrete, but this is not enough to study the loss of prestressing due to concrete shrinkage and creep and testing should be carried out on elements reinforced with prestressed reinforcement to take into account changes in prestresses and redistribution of stresses on the height of the cross section (depth) of the element with a prolonged action of the prestressing force. The results of experimental studies of rectangular reinforced concrete beams at loadcase of different ages of t = 14, 28, 280 and 320 days are analyzed. The losses from rapid creep, shrinkage losses, total losses from shrinkage and creep are considered. The experimental data are presented in the form of graphs and tables. There was performed comparison of the experimental data with the calculated ones determined according to the current standards, and for shrinkage according to the method proposed by I.I. Ulitsky as well.

Abstract

An application is considered of the extractive distillation flowsheets with partially thermally coupled columns for the separation of ternary azeotropic mixtures with the different type of vapor–liquid equilibrium diagrams. The feasible extractive distillation flowsheets with such columns are identified for all types of the ternary azeotropic mixture vapor–liquid equilibrium diagrams. The manifold of flowsheets is the search space to identify the optimal arrangement for the separation of the individual mixture. An applicability analysis of all possible extractive distillation flowsheets for all types of vapor–liquid equilibrium diagram decreases the number of feasible configurations for the selection of the optimal extractive distillation sequence for the mixture with unique vapor–liquid equilibrium diagram separation. For example, in the case of benzene–cyclohexane–toluene mixture distillation with N-methylpyrrolidone as an entrainer, only 10 extractive distillation flowsheets instead of 22 potential ones must be analyzed, calculated and optimized for the identification of the best extractive distillation arrangement.

Abstract

We have studied the physicomechanical properties (adhesion to steel, microhardness, and wear resistance) of chemical nickel-phosphorus coatings doped with a small amount (0.5–2%) of copper. The as-grown coatings have low porosity and stable composition. They are identical in mechanical properties to conventional chemical nickel-phosphorus coatings but exhibit enhanced wear resistance after heat treatment at a temperature of 600°C. Copper doping improves the corrosion resistance of the coatings in acidified chloride solutions.

Abstract

There are presented the results of the work, which aims to identify the relationship between the temperature of air in the salons of subway cars from the heat output of passengers in different people occupancy of cars during "peak hours", and to determine the efficacy offorced air handling regular ventilation or air conditioning system to remove the elevated heat load on passengers. In the work there was used the method of calculating the amount of heat output of 215 passengers (nominal fullness of the chamber) and the simulation method of heat and moisture output of the same number of passengers. The operating system of ventilation has been shown to fail to decline the average temperature of the air in the passenger compartment to the optimum values and most efficient approach for the reducing the heat load on the passengers is the use of air conditioning systems.

Abstract

The autoextractive distillation of an azeotropic solvent mixture of acetone, chloroform, n-butanol, and dimethylformamide is considered. A set of flowsheets belonging to different structural classes is synthesized (flowsheets containing two-withdrawal columns and flowsheets involving complex columns with a single side section). The flowsheet that is optimal in energy consumption is revealed, and it is shown that flowsheets with coupled heat and material flows are more efficient than conventional ones.

Abstract

We report upon the performance of an analog hadron calorimeter prototype, where plastic scintillator tiles are read out with wavelength-shifting fibers coupled to avalanche photodiodes. This prototype configuration has been tested using a positron beam at DESY with energies between 1 and 6 GeV. We present different detector calibration methods, show measurements for noise, linearity, and energy resolution and discuss gain monitoring with an LED system. The results are in good agreement with our simulation studies and previous measurements using silicon photomultiplier readout.

Abstract

We report on the design, construction and performance of a prototype for a high-granularity tile hadronic calorimeter for a future international linear collider detector. Scintillating tiles are read out via wavelength-shifting fibers that guide the scintillation light to a novel photodetector, the silicon photomultiplier. A prototype has been tested using a positron test beam at DESY. The results are compared with a reference prototype calorimeter equipped with multichannel vacuum photomultipliers. Detector calibration, noise, linearity and stability are discussed, and the energy response in a 1–6 GeV positron beam is compared with simulations. The present results demonstrate that the silicon photomultiplier is well-suited as photodetectors in calorimeters and thus has been selected for the construction of a 1 m 3 calorimeter prototype to operate in hadron beams.

Abstract

We have measured the partial widths of the Z 0 into lepton pairs, and the forward-backward charge asymmetry for the process e + e − → μ + μ − using the L3 detector at LEP. We obtain an average Γ ll of 83.0±2.1±1.1 MeV.From this result and the asymmetry measurement, we extract the values of the vector and axial vector couplings of the Z 0 to leptons: g rmv =−0.066 −0.027 +0.046 and g rmA = −0.495 −0.007 +0.007 .

Abstract

We have studied the possibility of obtaining nickel-phosphorus coatings doped with copper (0.5–2 wt %) by chemical deposition from weakly acidic solutions containing nickel and copper salts and sodium hypophosphite, as well as malonic, succinic, and aminoacetic acids as complex-forming and buffering components, and a lead salt as the stabilizer at pH 6.3–7.0 and a temperature of 87–97°C. The solution composition has been optimized using the method of mathematical experiment planning so as to provide the deposition at a maximum rate.

Abstract

A high pressure gas self-triggered scintillation drift chamber has been built with a working volume of 30 cm diameter and 4 cm depth, viewed through glass windows by an array of 19 PMTs. The detector tested at 9 bar xenon filling showed 2.7% FWHM energy resolution at 122 keV over a 22 cm field of view and three-dimensional sensitivity with X , Y resolution of 3.7 mm FWHM and Z resolution of 0.6 mm FWHM for 60 keV photoabsorbed γ-rays. The readout system of the detector is able to select multi-vertex events occurring in the sensitive volume due to γ-ray absorption and discriminate fluorescent photons, Compton scattering and photoabsorption vertices. The energy resolution in “fluorescent photon gated mode” has been measured as 2.2% FWHM at 122 keV γ-ray. Some possible applications of the detector are discussed.

Abstract

Calorimeters with a high granularity are a fundamental requirement of the Particle Flow paradigm. This paper focuses on the prototype of a hadron calorimeter with analog readout, consisting of thirty-eight scintillator layers alternating with steel absorber planes. The scintillator plates are finely segmented into tiles individually read out via Silicon Photomultipliers. The presented results are based on data collected with pion beams in the energy range from 8GeV to 100GeV. The fine segmentation of the sensitive layers and the high sampling frequency allow for an excellent reconstruction of the spatial development of hadronic showers. A comparison between data and Monte Carlo simulations is presented, concerning both the longitudinal and lateral development of hadronic showers and the global response of the calorimeter. Abstract

A prototype module for an International Linear Collider (ILC) detector was built, installed, and tested between 2006 and 2009 at CERN and Fermilab as part of the CALICE test beam program, in order to study the possibilities of extending energy sampling behind a hadronic calorimeter and to study the possibilities of providing muon tracking. The "tail catcher/muon tracker" (TCMT) is composed of 320 extruded scintillator strips (dimensions 1000 mm x 50 mm x 5 mm) packaged in 16 one-meter square planes interleaved between steel plates. The scintillator strips were read out with wavelength shifting fibers and silicon photomultipliers. The planes were arranged with alternating horizontal and vertical strip orientations. Data were collected for muons and pions in the energy range 6 GeV to 80 GeV. Utilizing data taken in 2006, this paper describes the design and construction of the TCMT, performance characteristics, and a beam-based evaluation of the ability of the TCMT to improve hadronic energy resolution in a prototype ILC detector. For a typical configuration of an ILC detector with a coil situated outside a calorimeter system with a thickness of 5.5 nuclear interaction lengths, a TCMT would improve relative energy resolution by 6-16 % for pions between 20 and 80 GeV., 23 pages, 18 figures, 4 tables, submitted to JINST

Abstract

Application Specific Integrated Circuits, ASICs, similar to those envisaged for the readout electronics of the central calorimeters of detectors for a future lepton collider have been exposed to high-energy electromagnetic showers. A salient feature of these calorimeters is that the readout electronics will be embedded into the calorimeter layers. In this article it is shown that interactions of shower particles in the volume of the readout electronics do not alter the noise pattern of the ASICs. No signal at or above the MIP level has been observed during the exposure. The upper limit at the 95% confidence level on the frequency of fake signals is smaller than 1 × 10 − 5 for a noise threshold of about 60% of a MIP. For ASICs with similar design to those which were tested, it can thus be largely excluded that the embedding of the electronics into the calorimeter layers compromises the performance of the calorimeters.

Abstract

The CALICE collaboration is studying the design of high performance electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters for future International Linear Collider detectors. For the hadronic calorimeter, one option is a highly granular sampling calorimeter with steel as absorber and scintillator layers as active material. High granularity is obtained by segmenting the scintillator into small tiles individually read out via silicon photo-multipliers (SiPM). A prototype has been built, consisting of thirty-eight sensitive layers, segmented into about eight thousand channels. In 2007 the prototype was exposed to positrons and hadrons using the CERN SPS beam, covering a wide range of beam energies and incidence angles. The challenge of cell equalization and calibration of such a large number of channels is best validated using electromagnetic processes. The response of the prototype steel-scintillator calorimeter, including linearity and uniformity, to electrons is investigated and described.

A prototype silicon-tungsten electromagnetic calorimeter for an ILC detector was tested in 2007 at the CERN SPS test beam. Data were collected with electron and hadron beams in the energy range 8 to 80 GeV. The analysis described here focuses on the interactions of pions in the calorimeter. One of the main objectives of the CALICE program is to validate the Monte Carlo tools available for the design of a full-sized detector. The interactions of pions in the Si-W calorimeter are therefore confronted with the predictions of various physical models implemented in the GEANT4 simulation framework. Abstract

An analog hadron calorimeter (AHCAL) prototype of 5.3 nuclear interaction lengths thickness has been constructed by members of the CALICE Collaboration. The AHCAL prototype consists of a 38-layer sandwich structure of steel plates and highly-segmented scintillator tiles that are read out by wavelength-shifting fibers coupled to SiPMs. The signal is amplified and shaped with a custom-designed ASIC. A calibration/monitoring system based on LED light was developed to monitor the SiPM gain and to measure the full SiPM response curve in order to correct for non-linearity. Ultimately, the physics goals are the study of hadron shower shapes and testing the concept of particle flow. The technical goal consists of measuring the performance and reliability of 7608 SiPMs. The AHCAL was commissioned in test beams at DESY and CERN. The entire prototype was completed in 2007 and recorded hadron showers, electron showers and muons at different energies and incident angles in test beams at CERN and Fermilab., Comment: 36 pages, 32 figures

Abstract

A prototype Silicon-Tungsten electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) for an International Linear Collider (ILC) detector was installed and tested during summer and autumn 2006 at CERN. The detector had 6480 silicon pads of dimension 1x1 cm^2. Data were collected with electron beams in the energy range 6 to 45 GeV. The analysis described in this paper focuses on electromagnetic shower reconstruction and characterises the ECAL response to electrons in terms of energy resolution and linearity. The detector is linear to within approximately the 1% level and has a relative energy resolution of (16.6 +- 0.1)/ \sqrt{E(GeV}) + 1.1 +- 0.1 (%). Abstract

We have observed B0-B0 mixing in Z0→bb decays using hadronic events containing dileptons. The data sample corresponds to 118 200 hadron events at √s≈Mz. From a fit to the dilepton p and p⊥ spectra, we determine the mixing parameter to be χB=0.178-0.040 +0.049. © 1990.

Abstract

From a fit to the single and dilepton p and P⊥ spectra, we determine A b b =0.130 −0.042 +0.044 including the correction for B 0 − B 0 mixing.

Abstract

Whatever the field, major change implies as much as deep transformation of thinking i.e to put in network new skills in particular, those made available by the availability of new technologies. In this context, only one individual cannot join together all necessary skills. It becomes clear that the goal of space valorization cannot be considered without relational investment between the partners and their accumulated background. The local empowerment concerns a collective phenomenon of acquisition and development of skills rests on an learning way appropriate to the potential of the territory to form or promote. The local mediation sets for objective the creation of relations between pre-existent skills and their transfer between the actors, individuals or groups, private or public. But the capacity of the territory to solve these problems will depend closely on the richness of the network and co-operations which it shelters or it will suggest.

Abstract

The L3 experiment is one of the six large detectors designed for the new generation of electron-positron accelerators. It is the only detector that concentrates its efforts on limited goals of measuring electrons, muons and photons. By not attempting to identify hadrons, L3 has been able to provide an order of magnitude better resolution for electrons, muons and photons. Vertices and hadron jets are also studied. The construction of L3 has involved much state of the art technology in new principles of vertex detection and in new crystals for large scale electromagnetic shower detection and ultraprecise muon detection. This paper presents a summary of the construction of L3.

Abstract

We have searched for charged and neutral leptons. We exclude stable Dirac neutrinos below 42.8 GeV and stable Majorana neutrinos below 34.8 GeV. From a search for unstable neutrinos we exclude masses below 46.4 GeV (Dirac) and below 45.1 GeV (Majorana). We exclude all masses of sequential charged and neutral leptons, except if both masses are larger than 42.8 GeV (for stable Dirac neutrinos). All mass limits correspond to 95% CL.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the influence produced by viral proteins in the hepatic cells and RNA of hepatitis C virus (HCV) on the indices of T- and B-cell response in 52 patients with chronic hepatitis C (CHC). A relative count of peripheral-blood lymphocytes (PBL), expressing antigens CD3+, CD4+, CD8+, CD16+, CD20+ and CD95+ was estimated. The repertoire of antibodies to HCV proteins was specified. The thus obtained data were compared with an activity and a disease stage by using the histological diagnosis and alanine-amino-transferase (ALT) level as well as with the presence of HCV RNA in the serum and viral protein of the liver. Such comparison of data and the use of the correlation analysis made it possible to establish that the antibodies to NS5 protein were detected reliably more often in patients with a more pronounced hepatic fibrosis, with a higher ALT activity and with expression of HCV proteins in the liver. At the same time, the presence of proteins in the liver and of RNA in the serum were accompanied by a more active humoral response to the non-structure proteins of NS4 and NS5 as well as by more profound discrepancies of the immunity T-cell chain (a lowered ratio of CD4+/CD8+ and a smaller content of CD95+). There were no differences between PBL of the studied populations in patients with various activities and an HCV stage. A relatively bigger quantity of CD95(+)--positive PBL was found to be reliably higher in patients with viremia but lower in those cases, in which HCV proteins were detected in the liver. This confirms the inhibiting ability of HCV proteins to the Fas-mediated apoptose of PBL in CHC patient.

Abstract

An emission detector, self-triggered with scintillation, is proposed to search for positron double-beta decays of /sup 124/Xe and of /sup 78/Kr. Ionisation clusters are extracted from liquid phase and measured with matrix of photodetectors as electroluminescent flashes of the gas phase. In case of 2/spl beta//sup +/ decay, a useful event will contain 5 ionisation clusters, cross-laying in the same plane. In case of K/spl beta//sup +/ decay, a useful event will contain 3 clusters, laying in the same line. Proposed detector with 0.4 m/sup 3/ working volume will be able to check the theoretical prediction for T/sub 1/2/ of 2/spl beta//sup +/2/spl nu/ and K/spl beta//sup +/2/spl nu/ decays of /sup 124/Xe isotope in over-ground experiment and of 2/spl beta//sup -/0/spl nu/, 2/spl beta//sup -/2/spl nu/ decays of /sup 134/Xe, /sup 136/Xe isotopes in underground experiment with natural mixture of Xe isotopes. Seeking for 2/spl beta//sup +/0/spl nu/, 2/spl beta//sup +/2/spl nu/, K/spl beta//sup +/0/spl nu/ and K/spl beta//sup +/2/spl nu/ decays of /sup 78/Kr in over-ground experiment with natural mixture of isotopes is also possible with additional NaI(Tl) triggering system surrounding the emission detector. High pressure Xe gas-filled model of the emission detector with working volume of 40 cm diameter and 4 cm depth is built and tested with multi-clusters events generated by absorbing /spl gamma/-radiation.

Abstract

Background and aims Gene therapy has strong therapeutic potential for the personalized treatment of type 1 diabetes. Local gene delivery methods for gene therapy are a promising strategy to increase the therapeutic genes concentration at the target location. Transient ultrasound can cause the local increase of cell membrane permeability thus promoting the penetration of transfection particles into the cell. The objective of this work is to evaluate transfection efficiency and safety for intrahepatic polyplex-mediated gene delivery by sonoporation. Methods Polyplexes of expression vector DNAs complexed to galactose-bearing polyethylenimine (L-PEI) have been used. Expression vectors are two plasmids containing expression cassette for full-size human preproinsulin gene controlled with CMV promoter and flanked by inverted terminal repeats of AAV (pTRhins) and the same cassette for marker gfp gene (pTRegfp). Animals were injected under US guidance with polyplexes in a dose of 40 µg pTRegfp /0.7 ml (rat) and of 15 µg pTRhins /0.15 ml (diabetic mouse) into the liver parenchyma of subdiaphragmal segments using 31 G needles. Afterwards injection locus in depth of 1 cm during 180 sec was insonated by 130 Db ultrasound using multifrequency 3-5 MHz probe. Results Sonoporation is able to increase polyplex gene transfer to liver cells in vivo. Flow cytometry analysis of primary hepatocytes isolated from the liver of experimental rats showed that ultrasound -enhanced polyplex gene transfer was highly localized, and was superior to all controls. At least 42% of the liver cells in vivo can be transfected in this way with ultrasound exposure versus 1.2% without it. Hypoglycemic effect of the insulin gene delivery followed by 3m in US exposure was observed on the third day: glucose level of diabetic mice (hyperglycemic 6- week) decreased in average by 30%. Nevertheless sonoporation does not increase naked plasmid DNA (without L-PEI ) transfection efficiency. A week and a month after the procedure serial sections from rat liver injected with polyplexes containing 40 µg marker plasmid or saline solution alone exposed to US and without it was analyzed for the presence of inflammation. Pathomorphological and histological analysis of experimental livers revealed no inflammatory processes in tissues, and any detectable side effects of US-enhanced gene delivery were seen. Experimental mice and rat liver DNAs were positive in transgene PCR for 3 months after gene delivery. Conclusions

Abstract

We have measured the properties of Z0 → b b decays using a sample of 944 inclusive muon events, corresponding to 18 000 hadron events obtained with the L3 detector at LEP. We measured the partial decay width of the Z0 into b b , Γ b b =353±48 MeV , and we determined the vector coupling of the Z0 to the b quark; grmv2(b)=0.095±0.047. We measured the forward-backward charge asymmetry in e+e− → b b events at √s≈Mv, and obtained A b b =13.3±9.9% .

Abstract

It is shown that the model used by Shifman, Vainshtein, and Zakharov for the description of the experimental function R{sub c}(s) in the form of a sum of {delta}-functions and the plateau contradicts the Wilson operator expansion (O.E.) in the terms due to the gluon condensate. A QCD model with an infinite number of vector mesons does satisfy the requirements of the O.E. for masses and electronic width resonances close to the experimental values. The region of allowable values of the masses of c- and b-quarks and the gluon condensate compatible with the O.E. is obtained.

Abstract

The characteristics of the L3 hadron calorimeter as realized in the observation of hadronic jets and other events from e + e − collisions at LEP are presented and discussed. The pattern-recognition algorithm utilizing the fine granulatiry of the calorimeter is described, and the observed overall resolution of 10.2% for hadron jets from Z decay is reported. The use of the calorimeter in providing information on muon energy losses is also noted.

Abstract

We have measured the cross-section of the reaction e + e − → γγ at center of mass energies around the Z 0 mass. The results are in good agreement with QED predictions. For the QED cutoff parameters the limit of Λ + > 103 GeV and Λ − 118 GeV are found. For the decays Z 0 → γ ,Z 0 → π 0 γ , Z 0 → γγγ we find upper limits of 2.9 × 10 −4 ,2.9×10 −4 ,4.1×10 −4 and 1.2×10 −4 , respectively. All limits are at 95% CL.
