In this paper we report on the fabrication and properties of Er3 and Er3/Yb3 doped Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) layers. The reported layers were fabricated by spin coating on silicon or on quartz substrates. Infrared spectroscopy was used for an investigation of O-H stretching vibration. Measurement were made of the transmission spectra in the wavelength ranges from 350 to 700 nm for the Er3 doped samples and from 900 to 1040 nm for the Yb3 doped samples. The refractive indices were investigated in the spectral range from 300 to 1100 nm using optical ellipsometry and the photoluminescence spectra were measured in the infrared region.

Metamorphic grade, palaeothermal history and the influence of tectonic strain on clay minerals and organic matter transformation were studied in the eastern part of the Teplá-Barrandian unit in the Czech Republic. The metamorphic grade of pelitic sediments ranges from the lower anchizone (IC ∼0.30–0.36Δ°2&thetas;) to the lowermost epizone (IC ∼0.24–0.26Δ°2&thetas;). Increase in metamorphic grade is paralleled by the development of anastomosing cleavage and lenticular quartz grains in the anchizone which give way to slaty cleavage and dynamically recrystallized ribbon quartz grains in the lower epizone. White mica in highly strained rocks generally has greater IC values whereas chlorite displays reduced values in deformed and cleaved samples. The organic matter dispersed in the sediments represents a complex assemblage of highly matured particles of uncertain origin, pyrobitumen and 'transitional matter'. The reflectance of organic fragments generally varies from 3.1% to 7.7% of Rmax which suggests anthracite to meta-anthracite rank progrades to semigraphite in higher-grade samples, although the overall link between Rmax and IC values is weak, if present at all. Newly formed shear-induced graphite appears abruptly near the anchizone-epizone boundary and correlates with the onset of plastic deformation and dynamic recrystallization of quartz grains in the host sediments.Maximum metamorphic temperatures within the Neoproterozoic sequence in the range of 250–350°C were attained during the Cadomian (Pan-African) orogeny at 540–550 Ma. Apatite fission-track analysis reveals a subsequent decrease in rock temperature over the period 340–350 Ma that persisted throughout the late Palaeozoic. The most recent episode of accelerated cooling occurred between 20 and 40 Ma, corresponding with the regional uplift of the Bohemian Massif due to the Alpine orogeny. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The structure and the biosorption properties of fungal biomass of Aspergillus niger originated from citric acid fermentation industry was investigated. This waste biomass, produced in high quantity in carefully controlled industrial processes, has certain favourable characteristics that may be improved for its usefulness. In environmental chemistry, it is known for the removal of heavy metals cations. In this work, different alkaline treatments (1M NaOH/20°C/24 h and 10M NaOH/107°C/6 h) were used to evaluate the dependence of sorption properties of biomass on the cell wall composition. The biosorption was studied by the batch method, with the biomass concentration of 1 g/l, at pH 6. The adsorption of lead was more effective than that of cadmium. The biosorption capacity was evaluated using the biosorption isotherm derived from the equilibrium data. At pH 6, the maximum lead biosorption capacity estimated with the Langmuir model was 93 mg/g dry biomass. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Traffic-loaded areas have been of increasing concern due to the potential risk of carcinogenic pollutants, including antimony (Sb), which accumulates mostly in atmospheric particles (PM) and can interact with soil organic matter (C org ). The stability of Sb in topsoils was studied via the adsorption mechanism using standard soils and C org -reach vehicle-produced particles as the unique source of "traffic" Sb. The mixed adsorbents were prepared from loamy sand and clay standard soils, and braking abrasion dust and diesel engine soot as Sb sources in atmospheric PM. Whereas the black carbon (BC), as part of C org , disposes of exceptional adsorption properties compared to the other C org , all adsorption experiments were performed identically on the adsorbents prepared from the original standard soils and Sb source materials and on the adsorbents prepared from the same materials annealed at 375 °C to ensure only BC participation in adsorption processes. The concentration of the Sb model solution corresponded to the average Sb content in rainwater from traffic-loaded localities. In addition to Sb, the C org and iron (Fe) were monitored. The sorbability of Sb on the loamy sand soil mixtures increased up to 90% compared with the pure soil due to new active surface sites for Sb binding created due to the C org added with the source material. The clay soil mixture containing 10 times more C org compared with the loamy sand soil accumulated the C org from the source material, which resulted in blocking active sites and a decline in Sb sorbability by up to 20%. The processes performed identically with original and annealed materials showed the same trends and confirmed the key role of BC and soil quality in the accumulation and stability of Sb in traffic-loaded topsoils. Raman mapping microspectroscopy was used as an advantageous high spatial resolution method for detailed assessment of the structure of radiation-induced halos in bituminous coal (Upper Paleozoic) with numerous inclusions of uraninite and coffinite. The uranium content in inclusions in the samples studied ranged from 40 to 50 wt%. Raman structural parameters such as full width at half maximum, the positions of the D-band and G-band peaks and their area ratios were calculated, and these correlated well with vitrinite reflectance. Using linear profiles across the entire halos, changes in the degree of radiolytic alteration of coal matter caused by ionising radiation resulting from the decay of uranium and its daughter products, were described. Using micro-ATR-FTIR, oxidative radiolytic alteration of coal was identified in halos, with oxidisation to alcohols, ketones and carboxyl groups, which were then converted to COO - ions bound to the cations present, including UO 2 2+ . From our data, we conclude that the conversion of the original coal to a type of anthracite occurred during the process of CH and CC cleavage, dehydroaromatisation of naphthenic rings and oxidation resulting in the transformation of aliphatic structures into aromatic clusters. Generally, radiolytic alteration increased the structural organisation of coal. The composition of lipids in soil offers clues to soil degradation processes due their persistency and selectivity in soil, and close relation to long-term processes in the ecosystem, thanks to their role in cell membranes of organisms. Organic solvent-extractable compounds were recovered from soils collected at two sites differing in the degree of forest damage. Gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were applied in order to characterize solvent-extractable lipids. Raman spectroscopy was also applied as it provides distinct advantages for determining the structural order of carbonaceous materials. The organic matter measurement techniques were combined with an established simultaneous multi-element measurement technique. Variations in individual soil horizons from the sites were reflected in the crystallinity of epicuticular waxes, presence of long-chain aliphatic hydrocarbons, concentrations of n-alkanes, saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, dicarboxylic acids, and in the content of aromatic structures, hydroxyl, ester, and carboxylic acid groups. The results are explained by differently transformed organic matter. The concentrations of elements in the soils were also affected by atmospheric depositions, including higher accumulations of arsenic and antimony, and lower contents of natural nutrients. These data have potential to be used as sensitive biogenic indicators of ecosystem damage by long-term atmospheric depositions.

Two pieces of studlovite - Eocene amber from Študlov (Southeast Moravia, Czech Republic) were investigated. To arrive at a more detailed description, attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry were used. Both studlovite samples revealed signs of the same plant source, with higher polymerisation and a higher degree of maturation of the fossilized matter. Despite their close spectral resemblance, they differed in their detailed chemical composition, and in structure. Layering of one of the pieces studied showed how the resin was built and what impact the process had on the chemical composition of the amber. Characterization of the organic matter was completed with an analysis of trace elements in amber samples using scanning electron microscope combined with elemental distribution analysis (SEM/EDAX). The presence of uranium, with a bulk mass fraction of about 1.5 wt% and radiolytic alterations are a feature of Cenomanian amber from Křižany, at the northeastern edge of the North Bohemian Cretaceous uranium ore district. Pores and microcracks in the amber were filled with a mineral admixture, mainly in the form of Zr-Y-REE enriched uraninite. As a result of radiolytic alterations due to the presence of uranium, structural changes were observed in the Křižany amber in comparison with a reference amber from Nové Strašecí in central Bohemia; this was of similar age and botanical origin but did not contain elevated levels of uranium. Structural changes involved an increase in aromaticity due to dehydroaromatization of aliphatic cyclic hydrocarbons, loss of oxygen functional groups, an increase in the degree of polymerization, crosslinking of CC bonds, formation of a three-dimensional hydrocarbon network in the bulk organic matrix, and carbonization of the organic matrix around the uraninite infill., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. A more than 250 year-old mine dump was studied to document the products of long-term arsenopyrite oxidation under natural conditions in a coarse-grained mine waste dump and to evaluate the environmental hazards associated with this material. Using complementary mineralogical and chemical approaches (SEM/EDS/WDS, XRD, micro-Raman spectroscopy, pore water analysis, chemical extraction techniques and thermodynamic PHREEQC-2 modeling), we documented the mineralogical/geochemical characteristics of the dumped arsenopyrite-rich material and environmental stability of the newly formed secondary minerals. A distinct mineralogical zonation was found (listed based on the distance from the decomposed arsenopyrite): scorodite (locally associated with native sulfur pseudomorphs) plus amorphous ferric arsenate (AFA/pitticite), kaňkite, As-bearing ferric (hydr)oxides and jarosite. Ferric arsenates and ferric (hydr)oxides were found to dissolve and again precipitate from downward migrating As-rich solutions cementing rock fragments. Acidic pore water (pH3.8) has elevated concentrations of As with an average value of about 2.9 mg L(-1). Aqueous As is highly correlated with pH (R2=0.97, p<0.001) indicating that incongruent dissolution of ferric arsenates controls dissolved As well as the pH of the percolating waste solution. Arsenic released from the dissolution of ferric arsenates into the pore water is, however, trapped by latter and lower-down precipitating jarosite and especially ferric (hydr)oxides. The efficiency of As sequestration by ferric (hydr)oxides in the waste dump and underlying soil has been found to be very effective, suggesting limited environmental impact of the mine waste dump on the surrounding soil ecosystems., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier B.V. Contents of uranium in coals from Odeř in the northernmost part of the Sokolov Basin, Czech Republic, in the vicinity of the well known St. Joachimsthal uranium ore deposits, reach extremely high values. In the present work, coal samples with contents of uranium ranging from 0.02 to 6 wt.% were studied. The study employing a whole complex of analytical techniques has been aimed at identification of changes in the structure of coal organic matter, which are associated with the high contents of uranium in coal. The study includes proximate and ultimate analyses, multielement analysis by instrumental neutron and photon activation analyses, micropetrographic analysis by optical microscopy, ESEM/EDX analysis of mineral matter, infrared and Raman spectroscopies, solvent extraction followed by gas chromatography with mass spectroscopy (GC/MS), and analytical pyrolysis (Py-GC/MS). The study has confirmed previously proposed explanation of uraniferous mineralization in sedimentary carboniferous substances by the mechanism of reduction and fixation of soluble U(VI) (uranyl, UO2(2+)) species (e.g., humic, carbonate/hydroxo/phosphate complexes) by sedimentary organic matter under diagenetic or hydrothermal conditions, and formation of insoluble U(IV) species as phosphate minerals and uraninite. The process is accompanied with alteration and destruction of the coal organic matter. The changes in the structure of coal organic matter involve dehydrogenation and oxidation mainly in the aliphatic, aromatic and hydroxyl structures, and an increase in aromaticity, content of ether bonds, and the degree of coalification., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ltd.
