Abstract: Abstract This paper presents the energy dependence of multiplicity and net-electric charge fluctuations in p+p interactions at beam momenta 20, 31, 40, 80, and 158 $$\text{ Ge }\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text{ V }\!/\!c$$ Ge V / c . Results are corrected for the experimental biases and quantified with the use of cumulants and factorial cumulants. Cumulant ratios are an essential tool in the search for the critical point of strongly interacting matter in heavy ion collisions. Measurements performed in p+p interactions provide a vital baseline estimation in these studies. The measured signals are compared with the string hadronic models Epos1.99 and FTFP-BERT.

Abstract: Abstract The yields of $$K^0_S$$ K S 0 mesons have been measured in inelastic p+p interactions at incident projectile momenta of 31, 40 and 80 $$\text {Ge}\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text {V}\!/\!c$$ Ge V / c ( $$\sqrt{s_{NN}}=7.7, 8.8$$ s NN = 7.7 , 8.8 and 12.3 $$\text {Ge}\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text {V}$$ Ge V , respectively). The data were recorded by the NA61 $$/$$ / SHINE spectrometer at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron and the $$K^0_S$$ K S 0 mesons identified via their decays into $$\pi ^{+} \pi ^{-}$$ π + π - pairs. Double-differential distributions are presented as function of transverse momentum and rapidity. The mean multiplicities of $$K^0_S$$ K S 0 mesons were determined to be $$(5.95 \pm 0.19 (stat) \pm 0.30 (sys)) \times 10^{-2}$$ ( 5.95 ± 0.19 ( s t a t ) ± 0.30 ( s y s ) ) × 10 - 2 at 31 $$\text {Ge}\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text {V}\!/\!c$$ Ge V / c , $$(7.61 \pm 0.13 (stat) \pm 0.43 (sys)) \times 10^{-2}$$ ( 7.61 ± 0.13 ( s t a t ) ± 0.43 ( s y s ) ) × 10 - 2 at 40 $$\text {Ge}\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text {V}\!/\!c$$ Ge V / c and $$(11.58 \pm 0.12 (stat) \pm 0.55 (sys)) \times 10^{-2}$$ ( 11.58 ± 0.12 ( s t a t ) ± 0.55 ( s y s ) ) × 10 - 2 at 80 $$\text {Ge}\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text {V}\!/\!c$$ Ge V / c . The results on $$K^{0}_{S}$$ K S 0 production are compared with the production of charged kaons in corresponding reactions and with model calculations (Epos1.99, SMASH 2.0 and PHSD) as well as with published data from other experiments.

Abstract: Abstract The critical point of strongly interacting matter is searched for at the CERN SPS by the NA61/SHINE experiment in central $$^{40}$$ 40 Ar + $$^{45}$$ 45 Sc collisions at 13 A, 19 A, 30 A, 40 A, and 75 A GeV/c. The dependence of the second-order scaled factorial moments of proton multiplicity distributions on the number of subdivisions in transverse momentum space is measured. The intermittency analysis uses statistically independent data sets for every subdivision in transverse and cumulative-transverse momentum variables. The results obtained do not indicate the searched intermittent pattern. An upper limit on the fraction of correlated protons and the intermittency index is obtained based on a comparison with the Power-law Model.

Abstract: Abstract The NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron studies the onset of deconfinement in strongly interacting matter through a beam energy scan of particle production in collisions of nuclei of varied sizes. This paper presents results on inclusive double-differential spectra, transverse momentum and rapidity distributions and mean multiplicities of $$\pi ^\pm $$ π ± , $$K^\pm $$ K ± , p and $$\bar{p}$$ p ¯ produced in $$^{40}\hbox {Ar+}^{45}\hbox {Sc}$$ 40 Ar+ 45 Sc collisions at beam momenta of 13A, 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A and 150A $$\text{ Ge }\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text{ V }\!/\!c$$ Ge V / c . The analysis uses the 10% most central collisions, where the observed forward energy defines centrality. The energy dependence of the $$K^\pm $$ K ± / $$\pi ^\pm $$ π ± ratios as well as of inverse slope parameters of the $$K^\pm $$ K ± transverse mass distributions are placed in between those found in inelastic $$p+p$$ p + p and central Pb + Pb collisions. The results obtained here establish a system-size dependence of hadron production properties that so far cannot be explained either within statistical or dynamical models.

Abstract: Abstract This paper reports measurements of two-pion femtoscopic correlations in Be+Be collisions at a beam momentum of 150 $$A\,\hbox {GeV}\!/\!c$$ A GeV / c (energy available in the center-of-mass system for nucleon pair $$\sqrt{s_{\text {NN}}} = 16.84$$ s NN = 16.84 GeV) by the NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN SPS accelerator. The obtained momentum space correlation functions can be well described by a Lévy distributed source model. The transverse mass dependence of the Lévy source parameters is presented, and their possible theoretical interpretations are discussed. The results show that the Lévy exponent $$\alpha $$ α is approximately constant as a function of $$m_{\text {T}}$$ m T , and far from both the Gaussian case of $$\alpha = 2$$ α = 2 or the conjectured value at the critical endpoint, $$\alpha = 0.5$$ α = 0.5 . The radius scale parameter R shows a slight decrease in $$m_{\text {T}}$$ m T , which can be explained as a signature of transverse flow. Finally, an approximately constant trend of the intercept parameter $$\lambda $$ λ as a function of $$m_{\text {T}}$$ m T was observed, similar to previous NA44 S + Pb results (obtained with a Gaussian approximation, but unlike RHIC results).

Abstract: Abstract The critical point of dense, strongly interacting matter is searched for at the CERN SPS in 40Ar + 45Sc collisions at 150A Ge V /c. The dependence of second-order scaled factorial moments of proton multiplicity distribution on the number of subdivisions of transverse momentum space is measured. The intermittency analysis is performed using both transverse momentum and cumulative transverse momentum. For the first time, statistically independent data sets are used for each subdivision number. The obtained results do not indicate any statistically significant intermittency pattern. An upper limit on the fraction of correlated proton pairs and the power of the correlation function is obtained based on a comparison with the Power-law Model developed for this purpose.

Abstract: Abstract First physics results of the BM@N experiment at the Nuclotron/NICA complex are presented on π + and K + meson production in interactions of an argon beam with fixed targets of C, Al, Cu, Sn and Pb at 3.2 A GeV. Transverse momentum distributions, rapidity spectra and multiplicities of π + and K + mesons are measured. The results are compared with predictions of theoretical models and with other measurements at lower energies.

Abstract: Abstract Measurements of $$K^{*}(892)^0$$ K ∗ ( 892 ) 0 resonance production via its $$K^{+}\pi ^{-}$$ K + π - decay mode in inelastic p+p collisions at beam momenta 40 and 80 $$\text{ GeV }\!/\!c$$ GeV / c ( $$\sqrt{s_{NN}}=8.8$$ s NN = 8.8 and 12.3 $$\text{ GeV }$$ GeV ) are presented. The data were recorded by the NA61/SHINE hadron spectrometer at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. The template method was used to extract the $$K^{*}(892)^0$$ K ∗ ( 892 ) 0 signal. Transverse momentum and rapidity spectra were obtained. The mean multiplicities of $$K^{*}(892)^0$$ K ∗ ( 892 ) 0 mesons were found to be $$(35.1 \pm 1.3 \mathrm {(stat)} \pm 3.6 \mathrm {(sys))} \cdot 10^{-3}$$ ( 35.1 ± 1.3 ( stat ) ± 3.6 ( sys ) ) · 10 - 3 at 40 $$\text{ GeV }\!/\!c$$ GeV / c and $$(58.3 \pm 1.9 \mathrm {(stat)} \pm 4.9 \mathrm {(sys))} \cdot 10^{-3}$$ ( 58.3 ± 1.9 ( stat ) ± 4.9 ( sys ) ) · 10 - 3 at 80 $$\text{ GeV }\!/\!c$$ GeV / c . The NA61/SHINE results are compared with the Epos1.99 and Hadron Resonance Gas models as well as with world data. The transverse mass spectra of $$K^{*}(892)^0$$ K ∗ ( 892 ) 0 mesons and other particles previously reported by NA61/SHINE were fitted within the Blast-Wave model. The transverse flow velocities are close to 0.1–0.2 of the speed of light and are significantly smaller than the ones determined in heavy nucleus-nucleus interactions at the same beam momenta.

Abstract: Abstract The production of $$K^{0}_{S}$$ K S 0 mesons in inelastic p+p collisions at beam momentum 158 $$\text{ GeV }/c$$ GeV / c ( $$\sqrt{s_{NN}}=17.3$$ s NN = 17.3 $$\text{ GeV }$$ GeV ) was measured with the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. Double-differential distributions were obtained in transverse momentum and rapidity. The mean multiplicity of $$K^{0}_{S}$$ K S 0 was determined to be $$0.162 \pm 0.001 (stat.) \pm 0.011 (sys.)$$ 0.162 ± 0.001 ( s t a t . ) ± 0.011 ( s y s . ) . The results on $$K^{0}_{S}$$ K S 0 production are compared with model predictions (EPOS 1.99, SMASH 2.0, PHSD and UrQMD 3.4 models) as well as with published world data.

Abstract: Abstract Double-differential yields of $${\Xi \left( 1530\right) ^{0}} $$ Ξ 1530 0 and $${\overline{\Xi }\left( 1530\right) ^{0}} $$ Ξ ¯ 1530 0 resonances produced in p+p interactions were measured at a laboratory beam momentum of 158 $$\text{ GeV }\!/\!c$$ GeV / c . This measurement is the first of its kind in p+p interactions below LHC energies. It was performed at the CERN SPS by the NA61/SHINE collaboration. Double-differential distributions in rapidity and transverse momentum were obtained from a sample of $$26\times 10^6$$ 26 × 10 6 inelastic events. The spectra are extrapolated to full phase space resulting in mean multiplicity of $${\Xi \left( 1530\right) ^{0}} $$ Ξ 1530 0 ( $$6.73 \pm 0.25\pm 0.67)\times 10^{-4}$$ 6.73 ± 0.25 ± 0.67 ) × 10 - 4 and $${\overline{\Xi }\left( 1530\right) ^{0}} $$ Ξ ¯ 1530 0 ( $$2.71 \pm 0.18\pm 0.18)\times 10^{-4}$$ 2.71 ± 0.18 ± 0.18 ) × 10 - 4 . The rapidity and transverse momentum spectra and mean multiplicities were compared to predictions of string-hadronic and statistical model calculations.

Abstract: Abstract The physics goal of the strong interaction program of the NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) is to study the phase diagram of hadronic matter by a scan of particle production in collisions of nuclei with various sizes at a set of energies covering the SPS energy range. This paper presents differential inclusive spectra of transverse momentum, transverse mass and rapidity of $$\pi ^{-}$$ π - mesons produced in central $${}^{40}$$ 40 Ar+ $${}^{45}$$ 45 Sc collisions at beam momenta of 13A, 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A and 150 $$A\,\text{ Ge }\text{ V }\!/\!\textit{c}$$ A Ge V / c . Energy and system size dependence of parameters of these distributions – mean transverse mass, the inverse slope parameter of transverse mass spectra, width of the rapidity distribution and mean multiplicity – are presented and discussed. Furthermore, the dependence of the ratio of the mean number of produced pions to the mean number of wounded nucleons on the collision energy was derived. The results are compared to predictions of several models.

Abstract: Abstract Measurements of multiplicity fluctuations of identified hadrons produced in inelastic p+p interactions at 31, 40, 80, and 158 $$\text {Ge}\text {V}/c$$ Ge / c beam momentum are presented. Three different measures of multiplicity fluctuations are used: the scaled variance $$\omega $$ ω and strongly intensive measures $$\Sigma $$ Σ and $$\Delta $$ Δ . These fluctuation measures involve second and first moments of joint multiplicity distributions. Data analysis is preformed using the Identity method which corrects for incomplete particle identification. Strongly intensive quantities are calculated in order to allow for a direct comparison to corresponding results on nucleus–nucleus collisions. The results for different hadron types are shown as a function of collision energy. A comparison with predictions of string-resonance Monte-Carlo models: Epos, Smash and Venus, is also presented.

Abstract: Abstract The NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) studies the onset of deconfinement in hadron matter by a scan of particle production in collisions of nuclei with various sizes at a set of energies covering the SPS energy range. This paper presents results on inclusive double-differential spectra, transverse momentum and rapidity distributions and mean multiplicities of $$\pi ^\pm $$ π ± , $$K^\pm $$ K ± , p and $$\bar{p}$$ p ¯ produced in the 20% most central $$^7$$ 7 Be+ $$^9$$ 9 Be collisions at beam momenta of 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A and 150A $${\mathrm{Ge} \mathrm{V}}\!/\!c$$ Ge V / c . The energy dependence of the $$K^\pm $$ K ± / $$\pi ^\pm $$ π ± ratios as well as of inverse slope parameters of the $$K^\pm $$ K ± transverse mass distributions are close to those found in inelastic p+p reactions. The new results are compared to the world data on p+p and Pb+Pb collisions as well as to predictions of the Epos, Urqmd, Ampt, Phsd and Smash models.

Abstract: Abstract A measurement of charged hadron pair correlations in two-dimensional $$\Delta \eta \Delta \phi $$ Δ η Δ ϕ space is presented. The analysis is based on total 30 million central Be + Be collisions observed in the NA61/SHINE detector at the CERN SPS for incident beam momenta of 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A, and 150A $$\text {Ge} \text {V}/c$$ Ge / c . Measurements were carried out for unlike-sign and like-sign charge hadron pairs independently. The $$C(\Delta \eta ,\Delta \phi )$$ C ( Δ η , Δ ϕ ) correlation functions were compared with results from a similar analysis on p + p interactions at similar beam momenta per nucleon. General trends of the back-to-back correlations are similar in central Be + Be collisions and p + p interactions, but are suppressed in magnitude due to the increased combinatorial background. Predictions from the Epos and UrQMD models are compared to the measurements. Evolution of an enhancement around $$(\Delta \eta ,\Delta \phi ) = (0,0)$$ ( Δ η , Δ ϕ ) = ( 0 , 0 ) with incident energy is observed in central Be + Be collisions. It is not predicted by both models and almost non-existing in proton–proton collisions at the same momentum per nucleon.

Abstract: Abstract The NA61/SHINE collaboration studies at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) the onset of deconfinement in hadronic matter by the measurement of particle production in collisions of nuclei with various sizes at a set of energies covering the SPS energy range. This paper presents results on inclusive double-differential spectra and mean multiplicities of $$\pi ^{-}$$ π - mesons produced in the 5% most central $$^7$$ 7 Be + $$^9$$ 9 Be collisions at beam momenta of 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A and 150 $$A\,\text{ GeV }\!/\!c$$ A GeV / c obtained by the so-called $$h^-$$ h - method which does not require any particle identification. The shape of the transverse mass spectra differs from the shapes measured in central Pb + Pb collisions and inelastic p+p interactions. The normalized width of the rapidity distribution decreases with increasing collision energy and is in between the results for inelastic nucleon–nucleon and central Pb + Pb collisions. The mean multiplicity of pions per wounded nucleon in central $$^7$$ 7 Be + $$^9$$ 9 Be collisions is close to that in central Pb + Pb collisions up to 75 $$A\,\text{ GeV }\!/\!c$$ A GeV / c . However, at the top SPS energy the result lies between those for nucleon–nucleon and Pb + Pb interactions. The results are discussed in the context of predictions for the onset of deconfinement at the CERN SPS collision energies.

Abstract: Abstract The production of $$\Xi (1321)^{-}$$ Ξ ( 1321 ) - and $$\overline{\Xi }(1321)^{+}$$ Ξ ¯ ( 1321 ) + hyperons in inelastic p+p interactions is studied in a fixed target experiment at a beam momentum of 158 $$\hbox {Ge}\hbox {V}\!/\!c$$ Ge / c . Double differential distributions in rapidity $${y}$$ y and transverse momentum $$p_{T}$$ p T are obtained from a sample of 33M inelastic events. They allow to extrapolate the spectra to full phase space and to determine the mean multiplicity of both $${\Xi }{^-} $$ Ξ - and $$\overline{\Xi }{^+} $$ Ξ ¯ + . The rapidity and transverse momentum spectra are compared to transport model predictions. The $${\Xi }{^-} $$ Ξ - mean multiplicity in inelastic p+p interactions at 158 $$\hbox {Ge}\hbox {V}\!/\!c$$ Ge / c is used to quantify the strangeness enhancement in A+A collisions at the same centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair.

Abstract: Abstract The measurement of $$K^{*}(892)^0$$ K∗(892)0 resonance production via its $$K^{+}\pi ^{-}$$ K+π- decay mode in inelastic p+p collisions at beam momentum 158 $$\text{ Ge }\text{ V }\!/\!c$$ GeV/c ($$\sqrt{s_{NN}}=17.3$$ sNN=17.3 $$\text{ Ge }\text{ V }$$ GeV ) is presented. The data were recorded by the NA61/SHINE hadron spectrometer at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. The template method was used to extract the $$K^{*}(892)^0$$ K∗(892)0 signal and double-differential transverse momentum and rapidity spectra were obtained. The full phase-space mean multiplicity of $$K^{*}(892)^0$$ K∗(892)0 mesons was found to be $$(78.44 \pm 0.38 \mathrm {(stat)} \pm 6.0 \mathrm {(sys)) \cdot 10^{-3}}$$ (78.44±0.38(stat)±6.0(sys))·10-3 . The NA61/SHINEresults are compared with the Epos1.99 and Hadron Resonance Gas models as well as with world data from p+p and nucleus–nucleus collisions.

Abstract: Abstract Results on $$\phi $$ ϕ meson production in inelastic $$p + p$$ p+p collisions at CERN SPS energies are presented. They are derived from data collected by the NA61/SHINE fixed target experiment, by means of invariant mass spectra fits in the $$\phi \rightarrow K^+ K^- $$ ϕ→K+K- decay channel. They include the first ever measured double differential spectra of $$\phi $$ ϕ mesons as a function of rapidity $$y$$ y and transverse momentum $$p_{\text {T}}$$ pT for proton beam momenta of $$80 \, \hbox {GeV}/c$$ 80GeV/c and $$158 \, \hbox {GeV}/c$$ 158GeV/c , as well as single differential spectra of $$y$$ y or $$p_{\text {T}}$$ pT for beam momentum of $$40 \, \hbox {GeV}/c$$ 40GeV/c . The corresponding total $$\phi $$ ϕ yields per inelastic $$p + p$$ p+p event are obtained. These results are compared with existing data on $$\phi $$ ϕ meson production in $$p + p$$ p+p collisions. The comparison shows consistency but superior accuracy of the present measurements. The emission of $$\phi $$ ϕ mesons in $$p + p$$ p+p reactions is confronted with that occurring in $$\mathrm{Pb} + \mathrm{Pb}$$ Pb+Pb collisions, and the experimental results are compared with model predictions. It appears that none of the considered models can properly describe all the experimental observations.

Abstract: Luminosity-driven channeling extraction has been observed for the first time in a 900 GeV study at the Fermilab Tevatron. This experiment, Fermilab E853, demonstrated that useful TeV level beams can be extracted from a superconducting accelerator during high luminosity collider operations without unduly affecting the background at the collider detectors. Multipass extraction was found to increase the efficiency of the process significantly. The beam extraction efficiency was about 25%. Studies of time dependent effects found that the turn-to-turn structure was governed mainly by accelerator beam dynamics. Based on the results of this experiment, it is feasible to construct a parasitic 5–10 MHz proton beam from the Tevatron collider.

Abstract: Luminosity-driven channeling extraction has been observed for the first time using a 900 GeV circulating proton beam at the superconducting Fermilab Tevatron. The extraction efficiency was found to be about 30%. A 150 kHz beam was obtained during luminosity-driven extraction with a tolerable background rate at the collider experiments. A 900 kHz beam was obtained when the background limits were doubled. This is the highest energy at which channeling has been observed.

Abstract: The Kuril Islands stretch southwest from Kamchatka, Russia, to Hokkaido, Japan and separate the Sea of Okhotsk from the northern Pacific Ocean. A series of transgressions and regressions linked to variations in climatically affected global ice volume are among the most important drivers of Holocene environmental changes in the region. Despite a long research history, reconstructions of the Holocene palaeoenvironment are sparse with inconsistent interpretations, arising from insufficient dating control, different temporal resolutions, and specific local geographical features, such as high tectonic activity and the isolated nature of the area. We have investigated a 550 cm lake sediment section from Iturup Island, the largest among the Kuril Islands. The 6600 year old sediment section was studied using sedimentological, geochemical, chironomid, diatom, and pollen analyses to reconstruct environmental and climatic changes and sea level fluctuations (transgression – regression stages). During the warm late phase of the Middle Holocene (6600–4400 cal BP) an open bay or lagoon with shallow overgrown littorals existed at the sampling site. The cooling between 5600 and 4400 cal BP can be correlated with Neoglacial cooling. The cool period between 4200 and 3200 cal BP was a transition towards the formation of a freshwater lagoon and can be related to a decline of the Japan Late Jomon transgression (Sakaguchi, 1983). Between 3200 and 2800 cal BP the lagoon separated from the marine environment in response to a further sea level decrease during the Japan Latest Jomon cold stage and regression. The following increase in the share of broad-leaved pollen indicated a slight warming (Yayoi transition stage) that was interrupted by a short-term cooling spell between 1500 and 1400 cal BP (cold Japan Kofun stage). The period between ca 1100 and 800 cal BP can be related to the European Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA) or relatively dry Japan Nara-Heian-Kamakura warm stage. The Little Ice Age cooling and Edo regression were evident after ca 800 cal BP. Modern warming however is not well seen in the investigated core.

Abstract: The authors discuss the use of the Greenell concept of ecological niches to analyze the taxonomic structure of communities and their relationship with environmental factors. The modeling of ecological niches was carried out using the results of 30-year studies of macrozoobenthos’ communities on 90 small and 12 medium-sized plain rivers in the region of the Kuibyshev, Saratov and Volgograd reservoirs. Geoclimatic indicators, relief characteristics and hydrochemical assessments of water quality at sampling points were considered as abiotic factors, where 11 variables with the least collinearity were taken. The multidimensional space of the initial abiotic factors was projected onto the orthogonal axes of the first two principal components; there were constructed ordination diagrams with plotted points of presence of species. The model of the potential ecological niche of each species was represented as an area in the space of latent variables, in which the habitat suitability index Z, estimated by the probability density of occurrence, corresponds to the given constraints. The authors used the Schoener and Hellinger indices to quantify the proportion of overlapping niches belonging to two different benthos taxa. The matrix of distances between overlapping niches was formed for all possible paired combinations of 40 most ecologically significant macrozoobenthos species. The cluster analysis of the obtained distance matrix was carried out by the methods of hierarchical agglomeration and fuzzy k-means. In the general multidimensional space of abiotic variables of the studied region, 4 areas of collective niches for groups of species with maximum distances between their centroids were identified. The analysis of intergroup variation of environmental factors is given and the characteristic features of each group are discussed: ecological strategy, biological characteristics and tolerance level.

Abstract: Statistical procedures for quantifying the relationships between the community structure and abiotic variables start with selecting a minimum set of uncorrelated environmental factors that determine the ecological conditions essential for each of the species. This is especially important when constructing models of spatial distribution of species which are key to ecology of communities and conservation of nature. The aim of the study is to explore whether some applications of information theory can be used to rank environmental factors with respect to their contribution to the formation of the ecological structure of aquatic communities. We consider the applicability of the instability index, which is a special case of the Kullback-Leibler entropy divergence and reflects the information gain from the displacement of a particular realization of a random variable relative to its mean value. Using of instability indices allows to reduce multidimensional data sets on species structure of communities and abiotic factors to lower dimension sets of commensurate standardized variables and to explore the relationships between the latter. The initial data we used were the results of the long-term (1990–2019) hydrobiological survey of benthic communities in small and medium-sized rivers in the Middle and Lower Volga regions. We consider the indices of instability calculated for each of 147 taxa of macrozoobenthos and 8 geophysical and hydrochemical indicators. Based on these data, we constructed random forest regression models and calculated potential weights of environmental factors that determine ecological preferences of species. The most significant explanatory variables were used to construct distribution maps of «virtual species», which were compared with the corresponding empirical data. A habitat suitability map of chironomids (Diptera, Chironomidae), the Prodiamesinae subfamily, is presented. Instability indices can be effectively used for exploratory analysis of various ecosystems, e. g. ranking habitats according to the degree of environmental instability and / or species associations, selecting the most informative abiotic variables that determine the population density of the taxa, etc.

31. Reconstruction of Environmental Conditions in the Eastern Part of Primorsky Krai (Russian Far East) in the Late Holocene

Abstract: This paper examines a 115 cm long profile section of lacustrine-swamp sediments from the Langou I Bay (eastern part of Primorsky Krai; 44°25′10.16″ N, 135°54′26.08″ E). According to the produced age model, the sediments are 3900 years old. A multiproxy study involving geochemical, chironomid, diatom, and palynological analysis indicates that the climatic and environmental conditions on the seacoast in the eastern part of Primorsky Krai developed in many respects synchronously with known climatic phases of the Late Holocene. The period from ca. 4200 to 2600 cal years BP corresponds to the first and second warm stages of the Jōmon period and the late Jōmon transgression in Japan. The peak of summer temperatures in the vicinity of the Langou I Bay occurred between 2900 and 2600 cal years BP. The cooling that began after 2600 cal years BP was not as severe in the study area as in Japan (cold Jōmon and Kofun stages): the reconstructed temperatures were 1°C lower than now; in Japan, they were 2–3°C below the current level. The Medieval Climate Optimum (Nara–Heian–Kamakura stage in Japan) reconstructed for the eastern part of Primorsky Krai in the period from 1250 to 750 cal years BP featured a humid climate with summer temperatures ca. 1.5°C higher than at present. The period between 750 and 250 cal years BP correlates with the Little Ice Age: summer temperatures had dropped to 1.5–2°C below the modern one. In the last 200 years, the lake has been shallowing and has nearly dried out. This period is marked by temperature fluctuations amid the trend of climate warming.

Abstract: Current climate changes require special attention to the implementation of environmental activities in arid regions. The study of the biotic component of water bodies of such ecosystems and the patterns of their spatial distribution is an important area of scientific research. The river network of the semi-desert zone of the Russian Plain is one of the least studied lotic systems in the Lower Volga basin. In this river network, the plain Yeruslan River is of the greatest importance because it largely determines the environmental characteristics of this arid territory. Therefore, it is important to study the structural indicators and spatial dynamics of macrozoobenthos communities in the Yeruslan River. The aim of the work was to study species composition, the structural and quantitative indicators of macrozoobenthos from the source to the mouth of the Yeruslan River and to determine the conceptual belonging of the bottom communities of the plain river of the semidesert zone to a certain type of distribution. The Yeruslan River (51°18'3''N, 47°46'19''E) flows through the semi-desert zone of the Russian Plain (Volgograd region, Russia) and it is a tributary of Volgograd reservoir. The length of the Yeruslan River is 282 km, with a catchment area of 55700 km2. We collected samples of macrozoobenthos at 9 stations of the Yeruslan River (See Fig. 1) in June 2015 and July 2016. In the ripal zone, the integrated samples for quantitative macrozoobenthos analysis were taken using an Ekman-type grab sampler (surface area 25 cm2) in replicates (8X) and a handle blade trawl (0.2 м × 0.5 м). In the medial zone, samples were taken by an Ekman-type grab sampler (surface area 250 cm2) in replicates (2X). Samples were washed in the field using a mesh screen with 300-310-μm mesh size and preserved in 4% formaldehyde. At each station of the Yeruslan River, we used ﬁeld analytical instruments for measuring pH and oxygen content. Water samples were taken for hydrochemical analysis at different sections of the river (See Table 1). We used the model of isolation by distance (Malécot, 1948), Monmonier’s maximum difference algorithm (Manni et al., 2004) and the Dickey-Fuller test (Dickey and Fuller, 1979) to perform statistical analysis of changes in the species structure of macrozoobenthos. The Yeruslan River flows within the geochemical province of continental salinity, which is characterized by an evaporative type of natural water regime, leading to progressive accumulation of salts. In this research, we found out that water was brackish at several stations of the river (1250-1420 mgl-1) due to water drainage of saline soils. We revealed that the Yeruslan River is polluted with nitrite nitrogen (at station 1) and phosphorus compounds (at stations 4 and 8) but concentrations of ammonium nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, cadmium, copper, zinc and lead did not exceed the MPC. Comparative analysis has shown that from the source to the mouth of the river there are no significant changes in the speed of water velocity flow, and the physical and chemical conditions are specific for each station. In the river, we collected 132 species: 47 - Diptera, 20 - Oligochaeta, 11 - Mollusca, 11 - Grustacea, 11 - Coleoptera, 7 - Trichoptera, 7 - Heteroptera, 6 - Hirudinea, 4 - Odonata, 4 - Ephemeroptera, 1 - Lepidoptera, Hydracarina, Polychaeta and Megaloptera. The macrozoobenthos of the river is represented by limnophilic species in the upper, middle and lower reaches. This is due to the small slope of the Yeruslan River and the presence of permanent and temporary dams. In the mouth reaches, the macrozoobenthos communities included species of the Ponto-Caspian and Ponto-Azov zoogeographic complexes. At all stations of the river, Oligochaeta and Chironomidae were of high density. Also, in the river mouth, Mollusca were of high density (See Fig. 2). Statistical analysis of sequences of hydrobiological characteristics along the longitudinal gradient of the Yeruslan River using the Dickey- Fuller test showed that the presence of a stationary distribution trend with random “wandering” is typical of the series of total density and biomass of macrozoobenthos, the number of worms of the family Tubificidae, larvae of chironomids of the subfamily Tanytarsini and mayflies of the family Baetidae. For the other series of observations, the presence of a nonlinear trend is noted (See Table 3 and Fig. 3). The selection of a sequence of borders (barrier) between river communities within the ecosystem by Montmonier’s method using a matrix of species distances by the Bray-Curtis method made it possible to identify the source (station 1) with a high level of nitritic nitrogen in the water as one of the specific areas. The second most important border separates station 3 with a low content of dissolved oxygen, and the third one allocates the mouth reaches (station 9) as an independent area, where there is a cohabitation of river and reservoir species (See Fig. 4). Based on the analysis of fauna and using statistical methods, we found out that macrozoobenthos communities do not change from the source to the mouth of the river in accordance with the “the river continuum concept”. The habitat of taxa depends on local abiotic and biotic factors at each river station, therefore, we can assume that the distribution of macrozoobenthos communities, generally, corresponds to “the patch dynamics concept”. At the same time, stations 1, 3 and 9 form fairly isolated hydrogeomorphological areas, which is postulated by the concept of “the functional process zones”. It seems that the spatial distribution of macrozoobenthos communities in the Yeruslan River can be explained by a complex combination of two concepts: “the patch dynamics concept” and “the functional process zones”. This type of distribution seems to be typical of plain rivers with very low water velocity and the presence of dams.

Abstract: A statistical analysis was performed on hydrochemical and hydrobiological data obtained from samples of macrozoobenthos, meiobenthos, and zooplankton in 2013 and 2018 from different biotopes of the five highly mineralized rivers of the basin of the hyperhaline Lake Elton. The general trends in the formation of the species structure of the metacommunity of aquatic organisms are considered based on the Lybold-Mikkelson concepts. Randomized null models are used to test hypotheses on the consistent occurrence of species (coherence), the formation of compact species associations (boundary clumping), and the regular change in the species composition along environmental gradients (turnover). The nature of changes in biotic diversity were determined to be nonstationary and intermittent, and the taxonomic structure was highly mosaic, which is characteristic of stochastic-type ecosystems. A close correlation was established within individual mixed associations of benthic and planktonic species due to biotic interactions and the coordinated response of organisms to environmental factors. Statistical models Random Forest and subsequent multivariate analysis were used to identify groups of species by the degree of tolerance to external abiotic influences, and the sets of factors having a significant impact were established.

Abstract: The paper presents the results of our comprehensive studies of the saline rivers of the arid Prieltonie region based on hydrobiological surveys of plankton and bottom communities. We have compared two tables of the specific structure according to the results of observations at 13 river sites in 2013 and 2018, which included the numbers of hydrobionts of 94 different taxonomic groups of macrozoobenthos, meiobenthos and zooplankton. Using the method of joint inertia analysis, we have revealed a high statistical consistency of the data matrices, due to objective laws of the spatial distribution of aquatic organisms. A randomization test of the Procrustean correlation coefficient showed the statistical significance (p = 0.00026) of the conjugacy of both specific structures in the space of latent variables. At the same time, a certain trend was noted in the changes in the taxonomic composition of communities at individual stations over time under the conditions of dynamic abiotic factors. We have analyzed the dependence of the taxonomic structure of hydrobionts on a set of 30 abiotic environmental factors obtained during hydrobiological and hydrochemical monitoring of the studied river sections. Using canonical correlation analysis and the projection method on latent structures, a set of ordination diagrams was plotted to allow revealing peculiar “ecological niches” for each group of species with a certain set of characteristics of their biotopes. The plankton and bottom communities were shown to correlate quite well with each other, which indicates a close relationship between them, due to both biotic interactions and a mutually agreed response to changes in aquatic factors.

Abstract: We present the results of a comprehensive study of five saline rivers in the arid region of Lake Elton, including hydrobiological surveys of plankton and benthic communities. The DIABLO method was used for a statistical analysis of the associative links between the species structures of the macrozoobenthos, meiobenthos, and zooplankton communities. This method combines multidimensional ordinations based on n blocks of observations and uses special algorithms of canonical correlation. It is shown that a significant portion of the cumulative variation in the data can be explained by a consensus configuration based on information common for all the three groups of observations. The diagrams, constructed and analyzed with the use of the cluster and Generalized Procrustes analysis, enable us to isolate stable associations of taxa typical for particular biotopes with homogeneous environmental conditions. We have constructed graphs of correlation pleiades and calculated indicator significance for particular species of macrozoobenthos, meiobenthos, and zooplankton. It is shown that highly mineralized systems of arid regions are not always characterized by a pronounced specification of life forms of plankton and benthic communities. The interpenetration between benthic and plankton animals results in a high portion of mixed ecological groups. Plankton and benthic communities correlate well enough with each other, which testifies to a close relationship between them due to both biotic interactions and a mutually agreed response to changes in aquatic environment factors. These data enable us to consider the plankton and benthic communities of highly mineralized rivers a nonequilibrium dynamically changing consortia of species.

Abstract: We investigated species composition, density, biomass and estimated production of macrozoobenthos communities in the middle and mouth reaches of the saline Bolshaya Samoroda River (Volgograd region, Russia) from May 2013 to April 2014. A total of 30 euryhaline and halophilic taxa were found during the study period. There were significant differences in the species composition between both study sites that could be explained by differences in ecological conditions. The production of macrozoobenthos in the middle reach was 22.54 g dry wt m−2 yr−1, and in the mouth reach the production was 117 g dry wt m−2 yr−1. In all seasons of the year at both sites, the greatest contribution to benthic production was made by the same taxonomic groups. Diptera dominated at both sites. Amphipods were abundant only in the middle reach. In the middle reach, the greatest contributions to production were made by Gammarus lacustris, Sphaeromias pictus and Glyptotendipes salinus, and in the mouth reach, Microchironomus deribae, Tanytarsus kharaensis and Chironomus salinarius contributed to benthic production the most.

Abstract: The study presents the results of long-term (2006-2014) research on the non-biting midges (Diptera, Chironomidae) in macrozoobenthic communities of five saline rivers (the Khara, the Lantsug, the Bolshaya Samoroda, the Chernavka, and the Solyanka) flow into hypersaline Lake Elton (Volgograd Province). The rivers have a high mineralization gradient from 4 to 41.4 g/L and diff er in size as well as in the spatial dynamics of hydrological-hydrochemical and hydrophysical parameters. In the mouth reaches, water mineralization in these rivers may exceed 100 g/L. In total, 25 chironomid taxa have been identified, 10 of which were typical of the Solyanka River and Chernavka River where salinity was above 20 g/L. In diff erent years, Chironomus aprilinus Meigen 1838, Ch. salinarius Kieff er, 1915, and Cricotopus salinophilus Zinchenko, Makarchenko et Makarchenko, 2009 were dominant in the Solyanka and Chernavka rivers and so was Tanytarsus kharaensis Zorina et Zinchenko, 2009 in the Khara and Bolshaya Samoroda. The chironomids of the benthic communities of saline rivers are represented by eurybiontic halo-tolerant species. Their distribution and abundance are linked to a complex of hydrological-hydrochemical factors, e.g., the level of overgrowth, water temperature, pH, soil particle size, etc. The chironomid diversity is strongly correlated with mineralization, although there is no clear relationship between chironomid abundance or biomass and mineralization between 6 and 41.4 g/L. The seasonal dynamics of abundance and biomass of chironomid larvae is characterized by spatial heterogeneity due to features of the life cycles of the most numerous multivoltine chironomids.

Abstract: Results of a paleolimnological investigated of a well-dated lake sediment section from Shikotan Island (Southern Kurils) showed that from ca 8.0 to 5.8 cal ka BP warm and humid period corresponding to middle Holocene optimum took place. Cooling thereafter corresponds to Neoglacial. A reconstructed from ca 0.9 to ca 0.58 cal ka BP warm period can be correlated to a Medieval Warm Period. Cooling after 0.58 cal ka BP can be correlated with the LIA. Marine regression stages were identified at ca 6.2-5.9, 5.5-5.1 and 1.07-0.36 cal ka BP. The general chronology of major climatic events of Holocene in the island is in accordance with the climate records from the North Pacific region. Revealed spatial differences in timing and magnitude of the Late Holocene climatic episodes (LIA, MWP) within region needs further investigations.

Abstract: —A comparative analysis of the variability of the species structure of macrozoobenthos communities in small and medium rivers of the Middle and Lower Volga river basin has been carried out. The statistically significant influence of the natural climatic zone, where the watercourse is located, and manifestation of the latitudinal gradient of biodiversity are shown. A list of indicator species has been made for each geographical zone identified using different criteria of biotopical distribution. Based on the analysis, the indicator value (IndVal) index, which takes into account the zonal distribution of both the occurrence frequencies of a species and its abundance ratios, was recognized as the most adequate. Association rules that contain combinations of species that most frequently occur together in hydrobiological tests have been formulated using the Apriory algorithm.

Abstract: Particle knockout scattering experiments1,2 are fundamental for mapping the structure of atomic nuclei2–6, but their interpretation is often complicated by initial- and final-state interactions of the incoming and scattered particles1,2,7–9. Such interactions lead to reduction in the scattered particle flux and distort their kinematics. Here we overcome this limitation by measuring the quasi-free scattering of 48 GeV c–1 12C ions from hydrogen. The distribution of single protons is studied by detecting two protons at large angles in coincidence with an intact 11B nucleus. The 11B detection suppresses the otherwise large distortions of reconstructed single-proton distributions induced by initial- and final-state interactions. By further detecting residual 10B and 10Be nuclei, we also identified short-range correlated nucleon–nucleon pairs9–13 and provide direct experimental evidence for separation of the pair wavefunction from that of the residual many-body nuclear system9,14. All measured reactions are well described by theoretical calculations that include no distortions from the initial- and final-state interactions. Our results showcase the ability to study the short-distance structure of short-lived radioactive nuclei at the forthcoming Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR)15 and Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB)16 facilities, which is relevant for understanding the structure and properties of nuclei far from stability and the formation of visible matter in the Universe. Initial- and final-state interactions distort the kinematics in particle knockout scattering experiments, complicating their interpretation. These effects are suppressed by detecting 11B nuclei in quasi-free scattering of 12C ions from hydrogen.

43. Production and quality control of NICA-MPD shashlik electromagnetic calorimeter in Tsinghua University

Abstract: The Multi Purpose Detector (MPD) is one of the detectors at the NICA collider and the Electromagnetic Calorimeter (ECal) is an important part of MPD. The cylindrical ECal system consists of 2400 ECal modules. In the first stage (2020–2024), Tsinghua University (THU) will produce 460 ECal modules for MPD project. This article mainly introduces the production, quality control and cosmic ray test of ECal modules in THU. The process flow, quality control standards, and testing system of ECal production have been established, which guarantees the high-quality completion of mass production on schedule. Up to now, nearly 360 modules have been manufactured, and a total of 460 modules will be produced by June 2022.

Abstract: Hydrological, hydrochemical, and hydrobiological data for five saline rivers of the arid Lake Elton region were analyzed. We found that interactions between plankton and benthic communities, in particular, between macrozoobenthos, meiobenthos and zooplankton, created mixed ecological groups of species. Abundances of plankton and bottom communities significantly correlated, which indicated that there is a close relationship between them due to biotic interactions and their similar responses to the effects of environmental factors. Multidimensional scaling and cluster analyses, the construction of hierarchical trees and species diversity models, the spatial correlation Mantel test, etc., were used to study the structure of communities in strongly disbalanced ecosystems of highly mineralized rivers. Indicator species were established by the TWINSPAN procedure. Our results demonstrated that plankton and bottom communities of the saline rivers can be represented as specific consortia or structural units of the river ecosystems.

46. Macrozoobenthos communities in the Kuybyshev reservoir Priplotinnyi Reach: long-term dynamics

Abstract: The authors analyzed the dynamics of benthic communities in the Kuybyshev Reservoir Priplotinnyi Reach, over a long-term observation period 1958-2020. The authors note a certain frequency of changes in the ratio of macrozoobenthos coenoses and biomass of benthic communities at the stations of the former Volga channel and the Priplotinnyi Reach floodplain. During the research period in 2005, 2020 there was a decrease in the biomass of benthos. The stage of destabilization of the Kuybyshev reservoir ecosystem, noted since the mid-1980s, against the background of anthropogenic eutrophication processes, is accompanied by a sharp decrease in the biomass of benthos and structural changes in benthic communities. In 2020, the benthos biomass, compared to 1985, decreased in deep-water areas and in the Priplotinnyi Reach coastal zone by about 8 times and amounted to 2.0 g / m2, which is due to a decrease in the proportion of pelophilic coenosis of oligochaetes Tubifex tubife and Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri. The biomass of forage benthos in the coastal zone decreased from 5.48 g / m2 to 2.94-1.75 g / m2 due to anthropogenic impact. The authors revealed similar processes of development of the chironomid coenosis on the former channel and the flooded floodplain. During the autumn survey, 9 species were recorded in shallow waters, the proportion of which is 19.5%. There was found a low biomass of Procladius ferrugineus larvae -0.05 -0.08 g / m2. The authors discuss the data of hydrobiological monitoring at the stations of the former channel and the flooded floodplain of the Priplotinnyi Reach, including the change in the coenosis of chironomids (Diptera, Chironomidae) as an object of indication of the ecological state of the reservoir.

47. Revisited the matter of the fodder galega new feed crop cultivation on the irrigated lands of the Lower Volga region

Abstract: The research results carried out on light-chestnut soils in 2011-2017 are presented, in order to determine the rational parameters of the water, nutritional regimes of the soil and various varieties of fodder galega to create highly productive herbage with their long-term use. The study of the fertilizers calculated doses influence and various pre-irrigation soil moisture thresholds on the herbage density showed that the maximum number of shoots was formed in the Magistr variety crops while maintaining an 80% moisture threshold due to an improved nutritional background. Under the same growing conditions, the highest symbiotic activity and photosynthetic activity of plants were noted. The yield of the fodder galega was significantly influenced by the moisture supply and the nutritional medium. The pre-irrigation soil moisture threshold maintaining at 80% minimum water capacity and the fertilizers application contributed to the formation of 47-83 t / ha of green mass, which meets the high requirements for the feed quality assessment. The accumulation of the root mass contributed to the enrichment of the soil with organic matter and nitrogen, most of which was obtained through the work of nodule-forming bacteria.

48. Macrozoobenthos in saline rivers in the Lake Elton basin: Spatial and temporal dynamics

Abstract: The data on seasonal and interannual changes in the taxonomic, structural, and quantitative characteristics of macrozoobenthos communities in rivers with a high salinity gradient are given. A total of 91 benthic invertebrate taxa have been revealed, which were dominated by Cricotopus salinophilus, Chironomus salinarius, C. aprilinus, Tanytarsus kharaensis, Microchironomus deribae, Glyptotendipes salinus (Diptera: Chironomidae), Culicoides (M.) riethi, Palpomyia schmidti (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae), Paranais simplex (Oligochaeta), and Ephydra sp. (Ephydridae) in different years. The fauna of benthic communities is mainly represented by eurybiontic halotolerant species with different ranges of resistance to salinity. The taxonomic composition and diversity of macrozoobenthos communities are closely correlated with water salinity in the range from 4 to 41 g/L; the complex of hydrological and hydrophysical factors (depth, overgrowing, water temperature, pH, etc.) control the distribution and abundance of species.

Abstract: Results of a paleolimnological investigation of a well-dated lake sediment section from Shikotan Island (Southern Kurils) showed that from ca 8.0 to 5.8 cal ka BP a warm and humid period corresponding to middle Holocene optimum took place. Cooling thereafter corresponds to Neoglacial. A reconstructed from ca 0.9 to ca 0.58 cal ka BP warm period can correspond to a Medieval Warm Period. Cooling after 0.58 cal ka BP can be correlated with the LIA. Marine regression stages were identified at ca 6.2–5.9, 5.5– 5.1 and 1.07–0.36 cal ka BP. The general chronology of major climatic events of Holocene in the island is in accordance with the climate records from the North Pacific region. Revealed spatial differences in timing and magnitude of the Late Holocene climatic episodes (LIA, MWP) in the region needs further investigations.
