1. Glacier fluctuations in the Northern and Southern Patagonian Ice Fields retrieved from observations on the International Space Station

Abstract

Quantitative indicators of changes in 37 glaciers of the Patagonian Northern and Southern glacial fields were determined by means of decoding and analysis of photographs obtained by astronauts from the Russian segment of the International Space Station. On the basis of this information it was concluded that in 2002–2016 the glaciers of both fields of Patagonia continued to retreat. The frontal parts of the nine glaciers retained their positions, while others reduced at an average rate of several dozen up to 430 m/year. Repeated monitoring of 16 glaciers from this selection and analysis of the data obtained in 2016–2019 confirm this conclusion. The only exception was the O’Higgins Glacier, which did not change position of its frontal part for 12 years and then retreated in 2018–2019 to 1,250 m. In some cases, a gradual decrease in area of the frontal part of the glacier was accompanied by a sharp collapse of the lower zone with the formation of extensive fields of icebergs. The dynamics of the Bruggen Glacier (Pius XI) are not typical for the region under consideration: for many years this glacier has been advancing. This development cannot be explained without detailed field investigation in the area of snow and ice accumulation of the glacier. Perhaps that was due to a snow-drift transport in an extensive area of accumulation that supported the preservation of the size of the glacier tongue, and even its advance. According to our observations, the average rate of retreat of the glaciers of the Western and Eastern slopes of the Southern Ice Field significantly decreased since 2010, i.e. their degradation slowed down. At the same time, glaciers of the Northern Ice Field continued to decrease intensively.

Abstract

The inoculation of sarcoma-37 against the background of the ganglionary blockade, provided by the intraperitoneal injection of 1 ml of pentamine, is not associated with its less take rate, but there is a manifest suppression of the tumor growth during the period up to 63 days. A preliminary ganglionary blockade completely eliminates the stimulating effect of a trauma on the tumor growth.

Abstract

A comparative quantitative investigation on the level of 11-oxycorticosteroids (11-OCS) in the peripheral blood and on morphological changes in the lymphoid tissue has been performed on intact and adrenalectomized rats after 3 hours' ether and halothane anesthesia. Three hours after the ether anesthesia, the level of 11-OCS increases more than twice, halothane is not a stress-producing anesthesia. After the ether anesthesia and essential devastation of the lymphoid tissue occurs, resulted from degeneration and a decreasing proliferative activity of the cells. In the adrenalectomized animals, both after halothane and either anesthesia, there are no essential morphological changes. Thus, certain significant differences between hormonal and morphological changes after either the halothane anesthesia have been revealed, as well as the role of the adrenal cortex in this activity.

Abstract

The study failed to show a stimulating effect of hyperbaric oxygen on growth and metastatic spreading of sarcoma 37 transplanted subcutaneously or intravenously to female SHR mice, melanoma B16 intramuscularly transplanted to female C57/Bl mice and methylcholanthrene-induced tumors in female albino noninbred rats. An insignificant inhibitory effect of hyperbaric oxygen on transplantable tumor growth and development of inducible ones in experimental animals was observed.

Treatment with such analgetics as analginum, promedol and pantopon was shown experimentally either to inhibit or to stimulate the growth of sarcoma-37 and its dissemination. It was also found to reduce the tumor growth--stimulating effect of operative trauma.

Abstract

Present work is based on the data of experimental studies on the influence of inhalatory (ether, chloroformum, halothane and methoxyfluorane) and intravenous anaesthesia (neurovegetative block and neuroleptoanalgesia) upon the tumour growth and metastasization as well as the level of corticosteronemy in surgical trauma. It has been revealed that the narcosis may change the course of the tumorous process both by means of its action on the endocryne part of the organism-tumour system and immediately (halothane) due to its cytostatic action. Obviously, anaesthesia may appear one of the factors influencing the results of multifactoral therapy of tumorous diseases.
