Objectives: Quality care in healthcare settings shortens hospitalization, reduces infection rates and complication risks, and improves patients' ability to manage their symptoms. Due to the absence of tools for assessing care quality in Italian oncology settings, this study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Italian version of the Quality of Oncology Nursing Care Scale (QONCS)., Methods: The study comprised 4 phases. Phase I involved cultural adaptation of the QONCS following Brislin's model. In phase II, 6 external experts assessed the instrument's face and content validities. In phase III, a cross-sectional study was conducted at 3 hospitals from February to September 2023. In phase IV, factor analyses were performed using exploratory structural equation modeling., Results: The 5-dimensional structure of the adapted QONCS showed a good fit based on the following statistics: χ 2 (324, N = 219) = 704.690, P < .001; root mean square error of approximation = 0.059 (90% confidence interval [CI] = 0.52-0.66), P < .001; comparative fit index = 0.935; Tucker-Lewis index = 0.908; standardized root mean square residual = 0.026. McDonald's ω (0.968) indicated satisfactory internal consistency. The test-retest reliability demonstrated a high and significant positive correlation. Correlation analysis revealed that age, marital status, and employment status were significantly and positively associated with the QONCS score., Conclusion: This study confirms the validity and reliability of the QONCS. We recommend using the QONCS to thoroughly assess nursing care quality and identify factors that influence the delivery of high-quality care in oncology settings., Implications for Nursing Practice: Our findings highlight the value of the QONCS in helping nurses assess and improve perceived care quality among patients with cancer. Durum wheat debranning fractions (fine and coarse bran) were obtained and included as an ingredient in the formulation of whole-meal spaghetti to study their chemical-nutritional characteristics, in particular folate levels and sensorial properties. Experimental raw pasta had a higher folate content (40.5 µg/100 g) than commercial whole-meal pasta (28.3 µg/100 g), meeting the requirements for the health claim on folate (Reg. EU 432/2012) and for the nutritional claim on dietary fiber. After cooking, folate retention in pasta formulated with coarse bran was 80% and scored an overall "good" sensorial acceptability. Results indicate that whole-meal pasta formulated with folate-rich debranning fractions may represent a natural functional food that, integrated into the diet, could improve the health status of the population.

The effect of cooking (barbecue-grilling, boiling, microwaving, oven cooking and frying) on lipids, fatty acids (FAs) and lipid quality indices of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis was investigated. In general, all processing methods significantly ( p < 0.05) modified the fatty acid profiles of mussels, although with major changes in fried samples, which exhibited the lowest saturated fatty acids and n -3 and highest polyunsaturated (PUFA) and n -6 FAs content. A significant decrease in the n -3 PUFA from the raw sample to five cooking methods was observed. The n -3/ n -6 ratio decreased from raw (6.01) to cooked mussels, exhibiting the lowest value in fried ones (0.15). C20:5 n -3 and C22:6 n -3 significantly decreased during all cooking processes, and overall in fried mussels. It can be concluded that cooking does not compromise the nutritional quality of mussels except with frying, although it resulted in a decrease of the atherogenic and thrombogenic indices.

The health of GI tract is particularly is maintained by breast feeding since the maternal milk provides micro- and macronutrients essential to growth, as well as multifunctional small oligosaccharides, particularly, 2'-fucosyllactose which maintain the GI health.

Introduction: Military corps have always been supported by healthcare providers who took care of the injured and sick soldiers. Traditionally the military nurse's figure has never been fully appreciated to the point that, even nowadays, it is still searching for its own identity., Aim: The aim of the study is to describe the military nurse's role from the Second War for Italian Independence (1859) to the conquest of Rome (1870)., Methods: Historical investigation. Secondary sources were consulted to carry out a geopolitical and historical contextualization of the reference period, while to trace the military nurse's evolution the team referred to primary sources. All the mentioned sources were analyzed according to Chabod's methodology (2012)., Results: The military nurse was born as a corpsman. The Risorgimento wars contributed to highlight the major contribution that nurses could give to military healthcare. In 1863 the Ministry of War elaborated a new and innovative profile for military nurses which foresaw particular physical and moral requirements, but also specific competences. Even though a new ideal of nurse was created, the Military Nurses Corp did not experience any changes: the nurses' activities remained transporting the injured and assisting doctors., Conclusions: Primary sources analysis highlighted an important attention towards the military nurse's role and education after national unity, although the gap shown by the military healthcare service during the Risorgimento battles was evident. Such condition facilitated the development of the first rescue committees which became, at a later time, the International Red Cross. The committees popularity allowed the volunteers to gain higher fame and social prestige than military nurses.

Vitiligo is a common disease of unknown cause that produces disfiguring white patches of depigmentation that can be treated using various new and experimental therapies, such as narrow-band ultraviolet B (NB-UVB) microphototherapy, NB-UVB excimer laser, and monochromatic excimer light. In the last 25 years, the number of patients aged ≥75 years undergoing non-cardiac surgery has greatly increased. In elderly patients, frailty is significantly associated with an increased risk of adverse events, functional decline, procedural complications, prolonged hospitalization, and mortality. The relationship between frailty and increased mortality and morbidity requires an appropriate tool of assessment to accurately quantify the patient's clinical and perioperative conditions. The preoperative evaluation of elderly patients candidate for non-cardiac surgery should include assessment of frailty, sarcopenia and malnutrition, as these are related to high surgical risk. For colon-rectal surgery as also for gastric cancer surgery, especially early gastric cancer, the introduction of laparoscopy has yielded considerable benefits in terms of short-term postsurgical outcomes, e.g. lower rate of intraprocedural bleeding and reduced length of hospital stay. Despite the progress made in preoperative assessment, surgical procedures and postoperative management, the improvement of outcomes after non-cardiac surgery in elderly patients remains a challenge and calls for future, well-designed clinical studies.

Advanced age is a strong predictor of high perioperative mortality in surgical patients and patients aged 75 years and older have an elevated surgical risk, much higher than that of younger patients. Progressive advances in surgical techniques now make it possible to treat high-risk surgical patients with minimally invasive procedures. Endovascular techniques have revolutionized the treatment of several vascular diseases, in particular carotid stenosis, aortic pathologies, and severely incapacitating intermittent claudication or critical limb ischemia. The main advantages of the endovascular approach are the low complication rate, high rate of technical success and a good clinical outcome. Biliary stenting has improved the clinical status of severely ill patients with bile duct stricture before major surgery, and represents a good palliative therapy in the case of malignant biliary obstruction.

We present an original case report of a bladder explosion during a TURP intervention for benign prostatic hypertrophy, that was brought on by the absorption of about 5 liters of glycine 1.5% and then onset of a severe hyponatremia. The quick and inappropriate correction of this electrolyte imbalance led the onset of encephalopathy and the death of the patient. The authors discuss the pathogenesis of these uncommon diseases and, considering the most recent Italian Legislation, they highlight the importance to respect good clinical practice standards and guidelines to ensure the most appropriate treatments for the patient and remove any assumptions of medical liability., Competing Interests: Conflict of interests: No authors report any conflict of interest.

Background: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment with one tablet a day of a low dose multicomponent medication (Arnica comp.-Heel® tablets) with anti-inflammatory properties in order to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events in patients with clinically stable coronary disease. The presence of inflammatory cells in atherosclerotic plaques of patients with stable coronary disease indicates the possibility to act by inhibiting the inflammatory phenomenon with Arnica comp.-Heel® tablets reducing the risk of instability of the plaque and, consequently, improving the clinical outcome in patients with stable coronary disease., Methods: Within this retrospective observational spontaneous clinical study 44 patients (31 males and 13 females) all presenting stable coronary artery disease were evaluated; 25 subjects were treated with only acetylsalicylic acid and/or clopidogrel in association with statins (standard therapeutic protocol) while for the other 18 subjects the standard therapeutic protocol was integrated with Arnica comp.-Heel® (one sublingual tablet/day). The primary outcome was to evaluate the incidence of acute coronary syndrome, out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, or non-cardioembolic ischemic stroke., Results: The evaluation of the primary outcome showed that in the group of patients (18) who received the standard therapeutic protocol plus Arnica comp.-Heel® only one cardiovascular event was registered (5.6%) while in the group treated only with standard therapy 4 events were recorded in 25 patients (16%)., Conclusions: The treatment with Arnica comp.-Heel® (one tablet/day) in combination with standard therapies for secondary prevention is effective in reducing the incidence of cardiovascular events in patients with stable coronary artery disease.

A seroprevalence survey of hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), was conducted using serum samples obtained from 5813 health care workers (HCWs) in five public hospitals in the Latium region of Italy, during the 1985 vaccination campaign against HBV. The seroprevalences of HBV, HCV and HIV were 23.3% [95% confidence interval (CI) = 22.3-24.4%], 2% (95% CI = 1.6-2.4%) and 0.07% (95% CI = 0.001-0.13%), respectively. In a logistic regression model, sex, increasing age, all job categories vs. physicians, dental treatment in the previous six months, and needlestick injury during the previous year were significantly associated with HBV. Conversely, no occupational and community risk factors, but only history of blood transfusion were significantly associated with HCV. Nevertheless, the documented risk of HCV as well as of HIV transmission through percutaneous and mucocutaneous exposure to blood and body fluids should lead to continued efforts to minimize risks of infection by enhancing the compliance of HCWs with vaccination against HBV and adherence to infection control measures, and by introducing safer devices and techniques.

In 1989 and 1992, HIV, HBV and HCV serosurveys were carried out among personnel and patients of an Italian Psychiatric Hospital. No HIV cases were found. Mean annual HBV seroconversion rate was 0.99% in patients and 4.4% in personnel; HCV rate was 0.42% among patients. Although the nosocomial risk of bloodborne infection was low, efforts should be made to minimize it.

Objectives: To assess the rate of needlestick injury in hospital personnel in an Italian region. To identify risk factors potentially amendable to correction., Design: Hospital workers undergoing hepatitis B prevaccination testing in 1985 through 1986 were interviewed regarding needlestick injury in the previous year, job category, area of work, years of employment, and other pertinent information., Setting: Of the 98 public hospitals of the Latium region, 68 participated in the survey: 32 of 55 with less than 200 beds, 20 of 25 with 200 to 300 beds, 11 of 13 with 400 to 900 beds, and all of the 5 with more than 1,000 beds., Participants: All healthcare workers providing direct patient care or environmental services as well as student nurses were invited by the hospital directors to undergo hepatitis B prevaccination testing and vaccination, if eligible., Results: Of 30,226 hospital workers of the 68 participating hospitals, 20,055 were interviewed (66.3%): 47.7% of the 7,172 doctors, 71% of the 14,157 nurses, 55.9% of the 2,513 technicians, and 71.9% of the 6,384 ancillary workers. Needlestick injury was recalled by 29.3%; the rates were 54.9%, 35.3%, 33.8%, 26.5%, 18.7%, and 14.7% in surgeons, registered and unskilled nurses, physicians, ancillary workers, and technicians, respectively. The recalled injury rate was 39.7% and 34.0% in surgical and intensive care areas; in infectious diseases, it was 16.7%. Rates were lower in hospitals with 200 to 300 beds (25.6%). The needlestick injury rate declined from 32% in those with less than 5 years of employment to 28% in those with more than 20 years (p less than .01). Prevalence of HBV infection was higher in student nurses and young workers recalling a needlestick exposure (14.3% and 15.8%, respectively), versus 10.1% and 12.8% in those not exposed (p less than .01 and less than .05, respectively)., Conclusions: Parenteral exposure to blood-borne infectious agents is a relevant risk among healthcare workers in our region, particularly in defined job categories and hospital areas (surgeons, nurses, surgical, and intensive care areas). Immunization and educational efforts should be made along with better designs of devices to reduce the risk of infection.

In 1985-1986, 634 adult dialysis patients were tested prior to hepatitis B vaccination, representing 40% of the total patients in Latium, an Italian region. HBsAg and anti-HBs prevalences were 7.1 and 36.0%, respectively. Merck, Sharp & Dohme (MSD) and Pasteur plasma-derived vaccines were randomly allocated to the 44 dialysis units. An anti-HBs response greater than or equal to 10 IU/l was elicited in 58.5% of 236 subjects tested at 6 months, 63.4% MSD and 52.4% Pasteur (p n.s.). The relatively low response to the vaccine in this high-risk group stresses the need to improve the efficacy of the vaccination and to maintain policies of environmental control.

A population of 488 HBsAg carrier individuals, from central Italy, classified on the basis of biochemical, clinical and histological parameters, was analysed for the presence of HBV-DNA in serum and its relationship with HBeAg/anti-HBe markers. The prevalence of HBV-DNA was 32.8% in chronic patients with biopsy-proven liver disease, and 20 and 4.3% respectively in asymptomatic carriers with and without altered ALT levels. The values in chronic patients were correlated with the histological activity. Concordance of HBV-DNA presence and HBeAg positivity was observed in only 61.4% of cases. However HBV-DNA prevalence in sera of anti-HBe positive individuals was very low in asymptomatic carriers with normal ALT levels (2.5%). Higher values were observed in anti-HBe positive chronic patients (15.8%) and in carriers occasionally found with changes in ALT without any other clinical sign of illness (16.7%). These data would indicate that HBV-DNA is the serological marker which is most closely related to liver disease.

An inquiry of the concentrations of two antibiotics (Tobramycin and Cefazolin) in the mucoses of nasal fovea and of maxillaris sinus was performed after in intramuscolar injection of the two drugs. It results that therapeutically efficacious concentrations were obtained.

The results of an epidemiological survey on surgical cases of human hydatidosis in 9 italian regions (Central, Southern and Insular Italy) with the highest incidence of disease and a population of 27,054,000 inhabitants are reported. The period considered was from 1980 through 1984. 2,592 cases have been collected and related to sex, age, occupation, residence of surgically treated patients and cyst localization. Comparison of results from the present and a previous survey was carried out.
