Abstract

A series of precision experiments on measuring the parameter Re(e′/e) in neutral-kaon decays is described. The experiments performed at CERN and Fermilab unambiguously prove the existence of direct CP violation in nature. The comparison between these experiments and the corresponding approaches to solving the formulated problem made it possible to reveal the advantages of different techniques in achieving maximum measurement accuracy.

Abstract

Interference correlations of neutral-kaon pairs produced in the interactions of 20-to 70-GeV neutrons with a carbon target are studied by using the EXCHARM spectrometer. Constructive correlations at low relative 4-momenta are observed for K S 0 K S 0 pairs. The kaon-generation radius is determined.

A conceptual design of MultiPurpose Detector (MPD) is proposed to study the hot and dense baryonic matter in collisions of heavy ions over atomic mass range A = 1–238 at a center-of-mass energy up to . The MPD experiment is foreseen to be carried out at the future JINR accelerator complex for heavy ions – the Nuclotron Based Ion Collider fAcility which is designed to reach required parameters with an average luminosity of L = 1027cm-2s-1.

Abstract

We present results of the exclusive diffractive reaction np → Λ0K0p at 0·08 < |t|< 0·53 GeV2/c2 and momenta between 30–70 GeV/c at the Serpukhov neutron beam. Thet-dependence is exp (Bt) withB= 11·4± 2·3 (GeV/c)−2 and it exhibits the diffractive minimum at ¦t¦ 0·28 GeV2/c2 for Λ0K0 massesM < 1·8 GeV/c2.B decreases with increasingM. Correlation with the beam direction is observed in the rest frame of the Λ0K0 system: the cross section rises for the forward-going Λ0. The rise is more pronounced for higherM. Abstract

A search for baryonia with negative and positive strangeness decaying respectively into\(\Lambda + \bar p + pions\) and\(\bar \Lambda + p + pions\) has been carried out in a neutron beam with a mean momentum of ≅40 GeV/c in an experiment performed at the Serpukhov accelerator. There is a strong indication of the existence of these baryonia. The following four charge states are observed for negative and positive strangeness: neutral, negative, positive and doubly charged. Their mean mass is 3055±25 MeV/c2 and the width Γ≦36±15 MeV/c2. The data show that the isotopic spin of the baryonia is ≧3/2. The baryonia production cross sections in the acceptable kinematic regionXF≧0.2 andPT≦1 GeV/c times the branching ratios of the observed decays are of the order of 1 μb per nucleon.

Search for decays of charmed strange baryons Ξ0c and Ξ+c produced by 40–60 GeV neutrons in the BIS‐2 experiment is presented. A decay asymmetry is shown indicating Ξ+c polarization. New decay modes of Ξ0c and Ξ+c have been observed, as well as the known one.

Abstract

We have observed the production of $$\bar D^0 $$ andD − mesons in neutron carbon interactions at 40–70 GeV/c. The experiment was performed with the spectrometer BIS-2 located in the neutron beam 4N of the Serpukhov accelerator. The signals of $$\bar D$$ mesons were detected in the effective mass spectraM(K + (890)π −) andM(K +(890)π − π −). The kinematical region of detected $$\bar D$$ mesons is 30 GeV/c < pL < 60 GeV/c andp T < 1 GeV/c. For this region the partial cross sections are $$\sigma (n + C \to \bar D^0 + X)$$ . $$BR(\bar D^0 \to K^ + (890)\pi ^ - ) = (0 \cdot 9 \pm 0 \cdot 3)\mu b$$ andσ(n +C→ D − +X).BR(D − →K +(890) π−π−) = (2·1 ± 0·7) μb. The longitudinal momentum spectrum in the regionx > 0·5 can be described byF(x) ∼ (1 − x) N with $$N_{\bar D^0 } = 1 \cdot 1 \pm 0 \cdot 5 \pm 0 \cdot 4$$ and $$N_{D^ - } = 0 \cdot 8 \pm 0 \cdot 4 \pm 0 \cdot 4$$ . The transverse momentum spectra were parametrized by the exponential function dσ/dp T 2 ∼ exp (-Bp T 2 ) with $$B_{\bar D^0 } = (1 \cdot 4 \pm 0 \cdot 7)({{GeV} \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{GeV} c}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} c})^{ - 2} $$ and $$B_{D^ - } = (1 \cdot 7 \pm 0 \cdot 8)({{GeV} \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{GeV} c}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} c})^{ - 2} $$ .

Abstract

TheA-dependence of the polarization ofΛ 0, s produced inclusively in neutron-nucleus interactions at a mean neutron momentum of about 40 GeV/c has been measured in an experiment performed using the BIS-2 spectrometer at the Serpukhov accelerator. Carbon, Aluminium and Copper targets were used. TheΛ 0, s were produced in the kinematical region of 0.6

Abstract

In this paper we study the inclusive production of the charmed baryon Λ c + in interactions of 40–70 GeV/c neutrons with protons of hydrogen target. The experiment has been performed with the use of magnetic spectrometer BIS-2 located in the neutron beam of Serpukhov accelerator. The signal of Λ c + is observed in the effective mass spectra of Λ°π+π+π−. After the removal of interactions occurring on the container of liquid hydrogen, the signal consists of 14 combinations corresponding to ≈4 standard deviations of background. Its mean value is 2262 MeV/c2, width of the bin containing signal is 20 MeV/c2. On the basis of this signal we determine the value of cross section of Λ c + production times the branching ratio of its observed decay modeσ. Abstract

The inclusive production of charmed baryonsΛ c + by 40–70 GeV neutrons on carbon has been observed. The decays $$\Lambda _c^ + \to \bar K^0 p\pi ^ + \pi ^ -$$ (130 ± 18 events) andΛ + →Λ 0π+π+π− (57±14 events) have been detected. The mean value ofΛ + mass is (2,268±6) MeV/c2. The invariant cross section forX>0.5 is described byE·d 3σ/dp 3∝ exp(−)bP T ·(1−X) n withb=(2.5±0.6) (GeV/c)−1 andn=(1.5±0.5). The cross section of theΛ + inclusive production measured forX>0.5 times the branching ratios are $$\sigma \cdot B(\bar K^0 p\pi ^ + \pi ^ - ) = (10 \pm 4)$$ μb per carbon nucleus and σ·B(Λ 0 π + π + π −)=(2.3±1.1) μb per carbon nucleus. The experiment has been performed in the neutron beam of the Serpukhov accelerator using the spectrometer BIS-2.
