1. Complications after cerebrospinal fluid collection in dogs with brain neoplasm

Abstract: ABSTRACT: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) collection in dogs with brain neoplasms (BN) may be associated with complications owing to increased intracranial pressure caused by expansive lesions. Although this procedure has been performed in dogs with BN, no data regarding complications after CSF tap in these animals is available. Thus, this retrospective study aimed to identify the rate and types of complications observed after CSF taps in dogs with BN. Thirty dogs with BN were included in the study. In 83% (25/30) of the cases, clinical recovery after CSF tap was considered normal, and in 17% (5/30) the recovery was abnormal. The main clinical and neurological signs observed in dogs with abnormal clinical recovery were apnea (5/5), absence of pupillary photomotor reflex (3/5), coma (2/5), and stupor (1/5). In 40% (2/5) of the dogs, herniation of the cerebellum through the foramen magnum was observed on necropsy. In conclusion, the rate of complications after CSF taps was 17%, and was characterized by apnea, absent pupillary photomotor reflex, altered level of consciousness, and encephalic herniation.

Abstract: Based upon dual focusing techniques, the Polarimetric High-Energy Modular Telescope Observatory (PHEMTO) is designed to have performance several orders of magnitude better than the present hard X-ray instruments, in the 1–600 keV energy range. This, together with its angular resolution of around one arcsecond, and its sensitive polarimetry measurement capability, will give PHEMTO the improvements in scientific performance needed for a mission in the 2050 era in order to study AGN, galactic black holes, neutrons stars, and supernovae. In addition, its high performance will enable the study of the non-thermal processes in galaxy clusters with an unprecedented accuracy.

3. Doença vestibular em cães: 81 casos (2006-2013)

Abstract: De 2006 a 2013 foram diagnosticados 81 casos de doença vestibular canina no serviço de rotina em neurologia de um hospital veterinário universitário do sul do Brasil. Desses, aproximadamente dois terços foram diagnosticados com doença vestibular central (DVC) e cerca de um terço como doença vestibular periférica (DVP). Cães com raça definida foram mais acometidos que aqueles sem raça definida, principalmente Dachshund (DVP) e Boxer (DVC). Os principais sinais clínicos observados, tanto na DVP quanto na DVC, incluíram: inclinação de cabeça, ataxia vestibular e estrabismo ventral ou ventrolateral. Deficiência proprioceptiva, disfunção dos nervos cranianos V-XII e alteração de nível de consciência foram vistos apenas em casos de DVC, já a ausência de reflexo palpebral ocorreu apenas em casos de DVP. Doenças inflamatórias/infecciosas, principalmente cinomose e otite bacteriana, foram as condições mais comumente associadas à DVC e à DVP, respectivamente. Esse artigo estabelece os aspectos epidemiológicos (sexo, idade e raça) e a prevalência dos sinais clínicos observados em cães com doença vestibular na Região Central do Rio Grande do Sul, discute a utilização dos achados clínicos no diagnóstico correto e na diferenciação entre DVC e DVP, e define quais as principais doenças responsáveis pela ocorrência dessas duas síndromes clínicas.

4. Focal spinal hyperesthesia as a prognostic factor in paraplegic dogs without deep pain perception

Abstract: Intervertebral disc extrusion (IVDE) is the most common cause of spinal cord compression in dogs, whose prognosis is variable and depends on several factors, with deep pain perception (DPP) being the main parameter used. Investigations of new prognostic factors are studied to assist in the estimation of functional recovery. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate whether spinal hyperesthesia (SH) at the compression site can be used as a prognostic factor for the functional recovery of dogs with acute IVDE (Hansen type I), without DPP being subjected to thoracolumbar hemilaminectomy. Decompression surgery was performed on the same day or the day after admission. The duration of the loss of DPP until surgery performance ranged from 1 to 60 days, with a median of 4.5 days for the group of dogs with SH and 5.5 days for those without SH. Among the 68 dogs included in this retrospective study, 73.5% (50/68) showed SH, and 26.5% (18/68) were not identified. Recovery was satisfactory in 60% (30/50) of dogs with SH and in 27.7% (5/18) of dogs without SH, demonstrating that paraplegic dogs without DPP but with SH were 3.9 times more likely to recover when compared to dogs in the same condition, but with no SH. No studies have evaluated SH by palpation of the spine as a prognostic factor, which reinforces the relevance of the present study. The results of this study imply that SH in paraplegic dogs affected by thoracolumbar IVDE, without the presence of DPP, can be used as a possible prognostic indicator of functional recovery. RESUMO: A extrusão do disco intervertebral (EDIV) é a causa mais comum de lesão compressiva na medula espinhal de cães, cujo prognóstico é variável e depende de diversos fatores, sendo a percepção de dor profunda (PDP) o principal parâmetro utilizado. Pesquisas de novos fatores prognósticos são estudados com intuito de auxiliar na estimativa mais precisa de recuperação funcional. Com isso, o objetivo do estudo foi avaliar se a hiperestesia espinhal (HE) no local da compressão, pode ser utilizada como um fator prognóstico para recuperação funcional de cães com extrusão aguda do disco intervertebral (Hansen tipo I), sem a presença de PDP submetidos a hemilaminectomia toracolombar. A cirurgia descompressiva ocorreu no mesmo dia ou no dia seguinte ao atendimento. A duração da perda de dor profunda até a realização da cirurgia variou de 1 a 60 dias, com uma mediana de 4,5 dias para o grupo de cães com e 5,5 dias para aqueles sem hiperestesia espinhal. Dos 68 cães incluídos nesse estudo retrospectivo, 73,5% (50/68) apresentavam HE e, em 26,5% (18/68) a dor não foi identificada. A recuperação foi satisfatória nos cães com HE em 60% (30/50) e, sem HE, em 27,7% (5/18) dos casos, demonstrando que os cães paraplégicos sem PDP, mas com presença de hiperestesia espinhal tem 3,9 vezes mais chances de recuperação quando comparado com cães na mesma condição, mas sem HE. Não foram encontrados trabalhos que avaliaram a HE mediante a palpação da coluna vertebral como um fator prognóstico, o que reforça a relevância do presente estudo. Os resultados do presente trabalho sugerem que a HE em cães paraplégicos acometidos por EDIV toracolombar sem presença de PDP pode ser utilizada como um possível indicador prognóstico de recuperação funcional.

Abstract: O objetivo deste estudo foi identificar cães com epilepsia e obter informações a respeito da raça, do sexo, da idade, da classificação da epilepsia e da crise convulsiva, dos estágios e do período de ocorrência das crises convulsivas. Em 66,7% (44/66) dos cães a epilepsia foi primária, em 21,2% (14/66) sintomática e em 12,1% (8/66) provavelmente sintomática. Os cães sem raça definida (27%) foram os mais acometidos e a faixa etária predominou entre um e cinco anos de idade. A crise convulsiva generalizada tônico-clônica (66,7%) foi a mais observada, a procura pelo dono (72,7%) no período pré-ictal e o andar compulsivo (60,5%) no período pós-ictal foram os sinais mais encontrados e a ocorrência das crises convulsivas foi maior no período noturno (79,2%).

Abstract: O objetivo deste estudo retrospectivo foi avaliar a recuperação funcional de cães paraplégicos sem percepção à dor profunda (PDP) com doença do disco intervertebral (DDIV) toracolombar submetidos à hemilaminectomia dorsolateral. Foram incluídos somente cães com DDIV entre os segmentos da medula espinhal T3 e L3, que estavam paraplégicos sem PDP submetidos à cirurgia descompressiva. Foi observada recuperação funcional satisfatória em 73,3% dos cães (n=11), sendo um, aos cinco dias, sete entre 15 e 30 dias e três acima de 30 dias do procedimento cirúrgico. A duração da perda da PDP antes da cirurgia em cinco cães recuperados foi entre 12 e 48 horas e, em seis cães, acima de 48 horas. Cães paraplégicos sem PDP em decorrência da DDIV toracolombar podem apresentar recuperação funcional satisfatória quando submetidos ao tratamento cirúrgico mesmo sem percepção a dor profunda com tempo superior a 48 horas. Futuras pesquisas serão necessárias para avaliar a eficiência do tratamento cirúrgico, principalmente para aqueles que perderam a PDP acima de 48 horas.

Abstract: O objetivo deste estudo retrospectivo foi identi [1]icar cães com neoplasmas envolvendo o sistema nervoso central (SNC), atendidos entre janeiro de 2003 a junho de 2011, no HVU-UFSM, e obter informações a respeito da raça, do sexo, da idade, dos sinais neurológicos, da localização, da evolução clínica, do tipo e da origem do tumor e dos achados de exames complementares. Os 26 neoplasmas envolvendo o SNC incluídos nesse estudo ocorreram principalmente em Boxers (35%), com predomínio de idade de cinco anos ou mais (92,3%). A evolução dos sinais clínicos nos neoplasmas encefálicos variou entre sete e 115 dias e nos medulares entre sete a 420 dias. Os sinais neurológicos principais em cães com neoplasmas encefálicos e medulares foram alteração do nível de consciência (58%), caracterizada principalmente por sonolência, e hiperestesia espinhal (57%), respectivamente. As regiões tálamo-cortical e T3-L3 foram as mais acometidas (58% e 43%, respectivamente). Dos 12 neoplasmas que afetaram o encéfalo, 10 eram primários (83,3%). Dos 14 neoplasmas que afetaram a medula espinhal, apenas quatro eram primários (28,6%). Dos neoplasmas encefálicos e medulares primários, o mais comum foi o meningioma, perfazendo 40% e 75% dos casos, respectivamente.

Abstract: O objetivo deste estudo foi identificar cães com doença do disco intervertebral (DDIV) cervical atendidos no Hospital Veterinário Universitário (HVU) da Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (UFSM) entre janeiro de 2003 e outubro de 2008 e obter informações a respeito de raça, sexo, idade, sinais neurológicos, resposta ao tratamento cirúrgico, complicações, tempo de recuperação funcional após a cirurgia e ocorrência de recidiva. Hiperestesia cervical foi observada em todos os cães (n=28). Quanto ao grau de disfunção neurológica foram verificados: grau I (8/28[28,5%]), grau II (3/28 [10,7%]), grau III (5/28[17,8%]) e grau V (12/2 [42,8%]). A duração dos sinais neurológicos antes da cirurgia em sete cães (25%) permaneceu por até 15 dias, em 14 cães (50%) entre 15 e 30 dias e nos outros sete cães (25%) por mais de 30 dias. A recuperação satisfatória e sem recidiva foi observada em todos os cães submetidos ao tratamento cirúrgico e que sobreviveram (n=21). Pode-se concluir que a DDIV cervical em nossa rotina acomete principalmente cães adultos, machos, de raças condrodistróficas e não condrodistróficas, incluindo as de grande porte; a hiperestesia cervical é a principal manifestação clínica; a técnica de fenda ventral promove recuperação funcional satisfatória e sem recidiva; as principais complicações trans-operatórias são a hemorragia do plexo venoso, a bradicardia e a hipotensão; e a duração dos sinais clínicos não interfere no tempo de recuperação pós-operatória dos cães.The aim of this study was to evaluate the medical records of dogs with cervical intervertebral disk disease (IDD), submitted to surgical treatment at the Hospital Veterinário Universitário of Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (HVU-UFSM), between January 2003 and October 2008. The animal data included breed, sex, age, neurological signs and their durations, response to surgical treatment, complications, time for functional recovery after surgery, and recurrence. All dogs showed cervical hyperaesthesia confirmed by the neck movement test. Regarding the degree of neurological dysfunction, the following were verified: degree I (eight dogs, 28.5%), degree II (three dogs, 10.7%), degree III (five dogs, 17.8%), and degree V (twelve dogs, 42.8%). In relation to the duration of neurological signs prior to surgery, seven dogs (25%) showed neurological deficits for up to 15 days, fourteen dogs (50%) for 15 to 30 days and the other seven dogs (25%) showed signs of neurological deficiencies for more than 30 days. All dogs (n=21) showed satisfactory recovery and no recurrence. It can be concluded that most affected dogs are middle aged, males and condrodystrophic and noncondrodystrophic breeds including large-breed dogs and the main neurological sign is cervical hyperaesthesia. The surgical treatment promotes satisfactory functional recovery and no recurrence, the main complications intraoperative are venous plexus hemorrhage, bradycardia and hypotension and the duration of clinical signs prior to surgery do not interfere with the recovery time of the dogs.

Abstract: O objetivo deste trabalho foi realizar um estudo retrospectivo dos casos de subluxação atlantoaxial em cães, por meio de consulta dos registros neurológicos do Hospital Veterinário Universitário (HVU), entre os anos de 2003 e 2008. Foram identificados a raça, o sexo, a idade, a etiologia, os sinais neurológicos, a duração dos sinais clínicos, o tratamento empregado, a resposta ao tratamento, o tempo de recuperação, a recidiva e a relação entre a duração dos sinais clínicos e a recuperação pós-operatória. Foram feitos o diagnóstico de subluxação atlantoaxial em 14 cães, sendo as raças Poodle (35,7%), Pinscher (21,4%) e Yorkshire Terrier (21,4%) as mais acometidas e a maioria (92,8%) com idade inferior a 24 meses. A principal causa da instabilidade foi a agenesia do processo odontoide do áxis (71,4%) e os sinais clínicos variaram desde hiperestesia cervical até tetraparesia não ambulatória. O tratamento predominante foi o cirúrgico, que demonstrou ser eficaz com recuperação satisfatória em 90% dos casos e menor possibilidade de recidiva, quando comparado ao trata,mento clínico. O tempo de recuperação predominante foi de 30-60 dias após a cirurgia, não existindo relação deste com a duração dos sinais clínicos.A retrospective study on atlantoaxial subluxation in dogs was done by reviewing the cases filed from 2003 to 2008 in the neurological records of the Veterinary Hospital of the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, at Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The following data were identified: Breed, sex, age, etiology, clinical signs, duration of clinical course, assessment of the therapy employed and its efficacy, response to treatment and relapse. Fourteen dogs were diagnosed as affected by atlantoaxial subluxation and the condition was more frequent in dogs under twenty-four month old years and of toy breeds, such as Poodle (35.7%), Pinscher (21.4%) and Yorkshire terrier (21.4%). The main cause found for the instability was agenesis of the odontoid process. Clinical signs ranged from cranial cervical pain to non-ambulatory tetraparesis. The predominant treatment employed was surgical which demonstrated to be efficacious in 90% of the cases with minor risks of relapse when compared with clinical treatment. The predominant time of recovery was 30-60 days after surgery. No correlation was found between the duration of clinical signs before surgery and the time of recovery.

10. A musculatura epaxial e a fibrose epidural na compressão medular em cães submetidos à laminectomia dorsal modificada

Abstract: O objetivo deste experimento foi isolar a musculatura epaxial da medula espinhal de cães submetidos à laminectomia dorsal modificada (LDM) e averiguar se os músculos influenciaram na formação da fibrose epidural, na compressão medular e no aparecimento dos sinais neurológicos. Para isso, dez cães hígidos foram submetidos à LDM entre as vértebras T13 e L1 e distribuídos aleatoriamente em dois grupos denominados controle (I) onde a medula espinhal permaneceu exposta sem a presença de implante, e tratado (II)onde foi colocado um im-plante a base de alumínio entre a musculatura epaxial adjacente e a medula espinhal exposta pela LDM. As avaliações constaram de exames neurológicos diários até 180 dias de pós-operatório (PO); mielografia, decorridos 15, 30 e 60 dias de PO; e avaliação macroscópica mediante a reintervenção cirúrgica. Não houve diferença durante as avaliações neurológicas. Aos 15 dias de PO, foi verificado na mielografia, que o grau de compressão da linha de contraste foi maior no grupo tratado (PThe purpose of this study was to isolate the adjacent epaxial musculature from exposed spinal cord by modified dorsal laminectomy in dogs with aluminum implant and to verify whether the muscles contribute to form epidural fibrosis, spinal cord compression, and development of neurological signs. Ten dogs were submitted to modified dorsal laminectomy between T13 and L1 and then distributed along two groups. Dogs in the group 1 remained with the spinal cord exposed without the implant; dogs in the group 2 had an aluminum implant inserted between the epaxial muscles and the exposed spinal cord. Neurological examination was daily performed until 180 days post surgery. Additionally, myelography at 15, 30, and 60 days post surgery and macroscopic evaluation of the implant at six months post surgery were done. There was no difference between groups in the neurological examination. A statistical difference in the degree of spinal compression was observed at day 15 post surgery in the group 2. In this group, the epaxial musculature adjacent to the spinal cord was not in contact with the epidural fibrosis, differently to what was observed in the control group. The implant was removed easily with some degree of deformity. The results showed that the adjacent musculature of the spinal cord submitted to a modified dorsal laminectomy in dogs can be isolated by aluminum implant, without any contact with epidural fibrosis or influence in the development of neurological signs.

Abstract: Fifteen consecutive patients with severely comminuted Rolando fractures were treated by closed reduction and fixation with a modified Suzuki frame without rubber bands, followed by immediate mobilization. All the fractures healed within 5 weeks. At 3 months, no rotational deformity was observed. The Kapandji score was equal that of the contralateral thumb in eight cases. No residual pain was recorded. Grip strength was 78% and pinch strength was 78% of the contralateral hand. One patient needed the frame tension modified. One patient developed a sensory deficit in the area of the superficial branch of the radial nerve that resolved spontaneously in 3 months. One patient healed with a 2-mm articular step-off, but the clinical outcome was good. Our retrospective study suggests that the small modification we made to the Suzuki frame provides a relatively simple and minimally invasive technique for the treatment of comminuted Rolando fractures.

14. Efeitos adversos da morfina, metadona e tramadol no pós-operatório de cães submetidos à cirurgia da coluna vertebral: 180 casos (2011-2016)

Abstract: RESUMO: A dor pós-operatória em cães que são submetidos a cirurgias da coluna vertebral é considerada severa e seu manejo inadequado pode influenciar no tempo de recuperação do paciente, na qualidade de vida e no resultado cirúrgico. Dentre os analgésicos indicados para uso no pós-operatório dessas cirurgias tem-se os opioides, que podem apresentar inúmeros efeitos adversos que requerem atenção. Devido à escassez de estudos clínicos acerca desse assunto em se tratando do pós-operatório de cães, objetivou-se com o presente estudo retrospectivo apresentar os efeitos adversos da morfina, metadona e tramadol utilizados no pós-operatório de cirurgias da coluna vertebral. Foram revisadas e avaliadas as fichas de 180 cães e anotadas as alterações observadas no pós-operatório e decorrentes do uso de opioides. Os principais efeitos adversos observados foram anorexia, hiporexia, vômito, salivação, vocalização, bradicardia, hipotermia, ofegação e sedação. Também foi observada persistência da dor em alguns cães mesmo com o uso de analgésicos. Houve diferença na ocorrência de anorexia nos cães tratados com morfina e nos tratados com metadona em relação aos tratados com tramadol. Ocorreu diferença também entre a observação de dor dos grupos morfina e tramadol. A associação de dipirona com morfina e com metadona não revelou diferença com relação à ocorrência de efeitos adversos, bem como a variação de doses. Conclui-se que a morfina, a metadona e o tramadol apresentam efeitos adversos quando empregados para tratamento da dor pós-operatória em cães submetidos à cirurgia da coluna vertebral; a anorexia, a hiporexia e o vômito foram os efeitos adversos frequentes com o uso de morfina e de metadona e, mesmo que o tramadol apresente menor ocorrência desses efeitos, seu uso, na dose estudada, pode não ser vantajoso quando se leva em consideração o grau de dor para cirurgias da coluna vertebral.

Abstract: Estrogen receptor (ER)-negative breast cancer shows a higher incidence in women of African ancestry compared to women of European ancestry. In search of common risk alleles for ER-negative breast cancer, we combined genome-wide association study (GWAS) data from women of African ancestry (1,004 ER-negative cases and 2,745 controls) and European ancestry (1,718 ER-negative cases and 3,670 controls), with replication testing conducted in an additional 2,292 ER-negative cases and 16,901 controls of European ancestry. We identified a common risk variant for ER-negative breast cancer at the TERT-CLPTM1L locus on chromosome 5p15 (rs10069690: per-allele odds ratio (OR) = 1.18 per allele, P = 1.0 x 10(-10)). The variant was also significantly associated with triple-negative (ER-negative, progesterone receptor (PR)-negative and human epidermal growth factor-2 (HER2)-negative) breast cancer (OR = 1.25, P = 1.1 x 10(-9)), particularly in younger women (

Abstract: AGN exhibit complex hard X-ray spectra. Our current understanding is that the emission is dominated by inverse Compton processes which take place in the corona above the accretion disk, and that absorption and reflection in a distant absorber play a major role. These processes can be directly observed through the shape of the continuum, the Compton reflection hump around 30 keV, and the iron fluorescence line at 6.4 keV. We demonstrate the capabilities of Simbol-X to constrain complex models for cases like MCG-05-23-016, NGC 4151, NGC 2110, and NGC 4051 in short (10 ksec) observations. We compare the simulations with recent observations on these sources by INTEGRAL, Swift and Suzaku. Constraining reflection models for AGN with Simbol-X will help us to get a clear view of the processes and geometry near to the central engine in AGN, and will give insight to which sources are responsible for the Cosmic X-ray background at energies above 20 keV., 4 pages, 1 figure, to appear in the proceedings of the second Simbol-X Symposium "Simbol-X - Focusing on the Hard X-ray Universe", AIP Conf. Abstract: The spectrometer SPI, one of the two main instruments of the INTEGRAL spacecraft, offers significant gamma-ray burst detection capabilities. In its 35 deg (full width) field of view SPI is able to localise gamma-ray bursts at a mean rate of ~ 0.8/month. With its large anticoincidence shield of 512 kg of BGO crystals SPI is able to detect gamma-ray bursts quasi omni-directionally with a very high sensitivity. Burst alerts of the anticoincidence shield are distributed by the INTEGRAL Burst Alert System. In the first 8 months of the mission about 0.8/day gamma-ray burst candidates and 0.3/day gamma-ray burst positions were obtained with the anticoincidence shield by interplanetary network triangulations with other spacecrafts., 8 pages, 4 figures. Abstract: OBJECTIVE To report a rare case of endometrial metastasis of cutaneous malignant melanoma, mimicked by histologically xanthomatous lesion. Only about ten other cases of endometrial metastasis of this malignancy have been reported previously. - DESIGN Case report. - PATIENT A 60 year old female. - MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE Fractionated curettage and immunohistologically examination of the tissue. - RESULTS Due to xanthomatous regressive changes of the metastatic tissue, difficulties in the histological confirmation as a metastasis of an unpigmented malignant melanoma occurred. But immunohistological staining showed positivity for S-100 and MART-1, as did the primary tumour. - CONCLUSIONS If atypical bleeding in patients with known malignant melanoma of the skin occur endometrial metastasis should be excluded by gynaecologists.

Abstract: In a uniaxial antiferromagnet the anisotropy energy −K (cos2 ϑa + cos2 ϑb)/2 forces the atomic spins in the magnetic sublattices a and b parallel (K > 0) or perpendicular (K < 0) to the symmetry axis. An external magnetic field changes the spin directions. For iron atoms this spin rotation can be detected by means of the Mossbauer effect of 57Fe. The intensities of the six hyperfine structure lines depend on the direction of the internal magnetic fields, which are parallel to the atomic spins. Therefore a spin rotation causes a change of the line intensities. Further, in the presence of an electric field gradient at the iron nucleus the spin rotation affects the electric quadrupole shift in a way, which depends on the sign of K. We have investigated a polycrystalline probe of calcined FePO4. The substance is antiferromagnetically ordered below 25 °K. At 4.2 °K we obtained K = = +(4.6 ± 0.5) × 105 erg/cm3. In einem einachsigen Antiferromagneten bewirkt die Anisotropieenergie −K (cos2 ϑa + + cos2 ϑb)/2, das die Atomspins der beiden magnetischen Untergitter a und b entweder parallel (K > 0) oder senkrecht (K < 0) zur Symmetrieachse stehen. Ein auseres Magnetfeld andert die Spinrichtungen. Fur Eisenatome last sich diese Spindrehung mit Hilfe des Mossbauereffektes am 57Fe nachweisen. Die Intensitaten der sechs Hyperfeinstrukturlinien sind abhangig von der Richtung der inneren Magnetfelder, die parallel zu den Atomspins stehen. Daher andern sich bei einer Spindrehung die Linienintensitaten. Falls am Ort des Eisenkernes ein elektrischer Feldgradient vorhanden ist, wird durch die Spindrehung auch die Quadrupolaufspaltung geandert. Die Art der Anderung hangt vom Vorzeichen von K ab. Wir haben gegluhtes Eisenphosphat FePO4 in polykristalliner Form untersucht. Die Substanz ist unterhalb von 25 °K antiferromagnetisch geordnet. Bei 4,2 °K erhalt man K = + (4,6 ± 0,5) × 105 erg/cm3.

Abstract: The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a new observatory for very high-energy (VHE) gamma rays. CTA has ambitions science goals, for which it is necessary to achieve full-sky coverage, to improve the sensitivity by about an order of magnitude, to span about four decades of energy, from a few tens of GeV to above 100 TeV with enhanced angular and energy resolutions over existing VHE gamma-ray observatories. An international collaboration has formed with more than 1000 members from 27 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and North and South America. In 2010 the CTA Consortium completed a Design Study and started a three-year Preparatory Phase which leads to production readiness of CTA in 2014. Abstract: We have performed observations of the blazar S5 0716+714 with INTEGRAL on 2-6 April 2004. In the first months of 2004, the source had increased steadily in optical brightness and had undergone two outbursts. During the latter, occurred in March, it reached the extreme level of R = 12.1 mag, which triggered our INTEGRAL program. The target has been detected with IBIS/ISGRI up to 60 keV, with a flux of ~3 x 10e-11 erg/s/cm2 in the 30-60 keV interval, a factor of ~2 higher than observed by the BeppoSAX PDS in October 2000. In the field of S5 0716+714 we have also detected the Flat Spectrum Radio Quasar S5 0836+710 and the two Seyfert galaxies Mkn 3 and Mkn 6. Their IBIS/ISGRI spectra are rather flat, albeit consistent with those measured by BeppoSAX. In the spectrum of Mkn 3 we find some evidence of a break between ~60 and ~100 keV, reminiscent of the high energy cut-offs observed in other Seyfert galaxies. Abstract: Ground-based gamma-ray astronomy has had a major breakthrough with the impressive results obtained using systems of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. Ground-based gamma-ray astronomy has a huge potential in astrophysics, particle physics and cosmology. CTA is an international initiative to build the next generation instrument, with a factor of 5-10 improvement in sensitivity in the 100 GeV-10 TeV range and the extension to energies well below 100 GeV and above 100 TeV. CTA will consist of two arrays (one in the north, one in the south) for full sky coverage and will be operated as open observatory. The design of CTA is based on currently available technology. 30. Pull-out vs. suture in zone Ia-Ib flexor tendon injuries: clinical results from a multicentre cohort study.

Abstract: Background: Several surgical techniques have been reported for flexor tendon zone 1a-b lacerations without a clear consensus on the gold standard treatment. The purpose of this multicentre study was to measure the outcomes of zone 1a-b flexor tendon injuries treated with a pull-out suture (POS) versus direct suture (DS) technique., Patients and Methods: Fifteen patients were treated with the pull-out technique and 22 patients with a direct suture technique between 2014 and 2020. The controlled active motion (CAM) regimen protocol and a standardised follow-up schedule were used in both groups. Data on the demographics, surgery, and treatment characteristics were collected at baseline as well as at week 6 and 13 post-operatively. The primary outcome measurement was the complication rate. Secondary outcome measurements were reoperation rate, finger range of motion (ROM), strength as well as patient satisfaction., Results: The patient age ranged from 18 to 75 years in both groups with all patients having a complete FDP lesion after a clean-cut injury. The complication rate was 41% in the POS group and 16% in the DS group. The reoperation rate was 29% in the POS group and 8% in the DS group. Significant between-group differences in favour of the DS group were found in the passive DIP and passive PIP+DIP ROM at week 6 and week 13. Mean hand strength was 28.7 (11.6) kg in the POS group at week 13 and 21.3 (7.9) kg in the DS group. This difference was statistically significant (p=0.012) with a medium effect size (r=-0.41). Average patient satisfaction at week 13 was 7.5 (2.2) points in the POS and 7.7 (1.3) points in the DS group. The difference between groups was not significant (p=0.839)., Conclusion: This register-based study demonstrates lower complication and reoperation rates with the direct suture approach compared with a pull-out button technique. Although clinical results were similar between the two surgery techniques at week 13 post-surgery, a direct suture approach should always be attempted whenever possible. 31. Outcomes of 218 primary single-finger flexor tendon repairs up to 1 year after surgery: a multicentre cohort study.

Abstract: In this retrospective multicentre cohort study, we present the results of primary single-finger flexor tendon repairs in zones 1 to 3 between 2014 and 2021. Data from 218 patients were retrieved with their demographics, injury and surgery characteristics and therapy outcomes. The data were systematically collected and analysed at predefined time points up to 1 year after surgery. A good to excellent return of motion was achieved by 77% (Tang classification) and 92% (American Association for Surgery of the Hand classification) of patients at 1 year. The tendon rupture rate was 8.7%. Time had a significant impact on the recovery of finger motion and grip strength of up to 1 year, of patient satisfaction and upper extremity function up to 26 weeks, and of pain up to 13 weeks after surgery. Our results demonstrate that it is worthwhile to assess therapy outcomes over various measurement periods, as some outcomes may continue to improve up to 1 year after flexor tendon repair surgery. 32. Six-Strand Flexor Pollicis Longus Tendon Repairs With and Without Circumferential Sutures: A Multicenter Study.

Abstract: Background: The purpose of this study is to assess outcomes in flexor pollicis longus tendon repairs with 6-strand core sutures with and without circumferential sutures., Methods: A 6-strand core suture technique with and without circumferential sutures was used. Thirty-three patients were summarized in the C group (circumferential group) and 16 patients in the NC group (non-circumferential group). After the surgery, the wrist was stabilized with a dorsal blocking splint and a controlled early active motion protocol was applied. At weeks 6, 13, and 26 data on demographics, type of injury, surgery, postoperative rehabilitation, complications such as re-rupture and the following outcome measurements were collected: range of motion and its recovery according to the Tang criteria, Kapandji score, thumb and hand strengths, Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand score, and satisfaction., Results: There were no significant differences in range of motion and strength between the 2 treatment groups. In both groups, the outcome measurements increased over time and they expressed similar satisfaction with the surgical treatment. In 4 patients of the C group tendon repair ruptured and in 1 patient of the NC group., Conclusions: Six-strand repair technique is an effective procedure to assure early active motion after flexor pollicis longus tendon injuries and good results can also be achieved by omitting the circumferential suture.

33. Relationship between pain, nerve injury and clinical outcomes after flexor tendon injuries in zones 1-2: a retrospective cohort study.

Abstract: Introduction: The influence of pain and a concomitant digital nerve injury on the course of rehabilitation after flexor tendon injury remains ambiguous. The objectives of the study were to: i) analyse the evolution of pain spanning one year after a primary flexor tendon repair in zones 1-3; ii) examine the differences in pain levels in patients with and without digital nerve injury; and iii) evaluate the relationship between pain, digital nerve injury and pain medication, total active motion (TAM), DASH scores and patient satisfaction., Methods: Data from 189 patients were retrieved from a flexor tendon registry between 2014 and 2020. Differences in pain, TAM, DASH and patient satisfaction were analysed. Multiple linear and binary logistic regression analyses were performed to determine the relationship between clinical outcomes., Results: Pain significantly decreased in the course of rehabilitation ( p < 0.001 to 0.006). No relationship could be identified between nerve injury and pain ( p = 0.21-0.97). In week 6, the presence of pain and a nerve injury were significantly associated with lower TAM scores ( p = 0.001). In week 13, pain during motion ( p < 0.001) and the presence of a nerve injury ( p = 0.036) were significantly associated with worse DASH scores. Patient satisfaction was significantly inversely correlated to pain during motion in weeks 13 and 26 ( p < 0.001)., Conclusion: We found a significant relationship between pain during motion and pain medication intake, TAM, DASH scores and patient satisfaction. 34. Outcomes of Primary Flexor Tendon Repairs in Zones 2 and 3: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Abstract: Purpose: The aims of this retrospective cohort study were to present outcomes of zone 2 and 3 primary flexor tendon repairs and to evaluate how clinical outcomes change over time within and between zones of injury at weeks 6, 13, and 26., Methods: Data were retrieved from a multicenter flexor tendon cohort registry from 2014 to 2021. The inclusion criteria were: (1) adult patients after primary flexor tendon surgery in zone 2 or 3, (2) flexor digitorum profundus laceration of >50%, (3) 4-6 multistrand flexor digitorum profundus core suture, and (4) early active motion protocol. The primary outcome was the range of motion. Secondary outcomes were strength, patient satisfaction on an 11-point Likert scale, and self-reported physical function measured with the Disability of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand questionnaire 6, 13, and 26 weeks after surgery., Results: We evaluated 33 patients after 39 tendon repairs in zone 3 and 174 repairs in zone 2 of 163 patients. Range of motion significantly improved over time in both zones ( P < .001 to .01). Between-group range of motion differences were nonsignificant except for week 26 ( P < .001) for the zone 3 group. Hand strength significantly improved in both zones over time ( P < .001 to .01), while between-zone strength differences were statistically nonsignificant ( P = .37 to .93). Patient satisfaction was generally good to high (mean 6.8 to 8.0 points) with significant within-group changes in both zones ( P < .001). There were no relevant between-zone differences in Disability of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand scores at any time point., Conclusions: Patients had significantly improved clinical outcomes in both zones. The zone of injury significantly affected the total active motion scores at the final assessment after 26 weeks for the zone 3 injuries. For the secondary outcomes hand strength, patient satisfaction, and Disability of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand scores, we discovered no significant between-group differences., Type of Study/level of Evidence: Therapeutic IV., (© 2023 The Authors.)

Abstract: Fifteen consecutive patients with severely comminuted Rolando fractures were treated by closed reduction and fixation with a modified Suzuki frame without rubber bands, followed by immediate mobilization. All the fractures healed within 5 weeks. At 3 months, no rotational deformity was observed. The Kapandji score was equal that of the contralateral thumb in eight cases. No residual pain was recorded. Grip strength was 78% and pinch strength was 78% of the contralateral hand. One patient needed the frame tension modified. One patient developed a sensory deficit in the area of the superficial branch of the radial nerve that resolved spontaneously in 3 months. One patient healed with a 2-mm articular step-off, but the clinical outcome was good. Our retrospective study suggests that the small modification we made to the Suzuki frame provides a relatively simple and minimally invasive technique for the treatment of comminuted Rolando fractures., (Copyright © 2016 SFCM. Abstract: Objective: To report a case of lymphangioma of the ovary after radiation due to Wilms' tumor in the childhood., Patient: A 19-year-old nulliparous female., Interventions: The vaginal ultrasound showed the left ovary enlarged to 4.4 cm x 2.9 cm x 4.5 cm in size including a 3.5 cm x 2.6 cm x 3.2 cm measuring cystic solid tumor without hypervascularity. For exclusion of a malignant tumor, a laparoscopy for excision of the tumor and deep incision of the left ovary with a bipolar needle was performed to exclude deeper tumor of stromal origin. The histological examination of the tissue showed a lymphangioma beside normal ovarian tissue., Conclusion: To our knowledge, this is the first report of lymphangioma of the ovary after radiation due to Wilms' tumor in the childhood. The impact of this finding on the patient's fertility remains unclear. As in other organs exposed to radiation, lymphangioma can also occur in the ovary. Careful follow up should be considered to this patients, because malignant transformation can not be excluded.

Abstract: Objective: To report a rare case of endometrial metastasis of cutaneous malignant melanoma, mimicked by histologically xanthomatous lesion. Only about ten other cases of endometrial metastasis of this malignancy have been reported previously. -, Design: Case report. -, Patient: A 60 year old female. -, Main Outcome Measure: Fractionated curettage and immunohistologically examination of the tissue. -, Results: Due to xanthomatous regressive changes of the metastatic tissue, difficulties in the histological confirmation as a metastasis of an unpigmented malignant melanoma occurred. But immunohistological staining showed positivity for S-100 and MART-1, as did the primary tumour. -, Conclusions: If atypical bleeding in patients with known malignant melanoma of the skin occur endometrial metastasis should be excluded by gynaecologists.
