Introduction: Regulatory T cells (Treg cells) in a tumor environment and the expression of forkhead box P3 (FOXP3) in tumor cells have been associated with a poor prognosis. There are few studies evaluating Treg cells and FOXP3 in B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-cell ALL). This study aimed to evaluate the frequencies of Treg cells in bone marrow (BM) and peripheral blood (PB) of patients with B-cell ALL and to determine their associations with the circulating cytokine profile and the expression of CXCR1 (IL-8 receptor) in Treg cells, as well as to compare FOXP3 expression in blasts of patients with B-cell ALL and normal lymphoid precursors. Methods: Samples of BM and PB from patients with B-cell ALL and healthy controls were studied. Treg cells, cytokines, FOXP3 and CXCR1 were evaluated using flow cytometry and analyzed. Results: A total of 20 patients with B-cell ALL and 10 healthy controls were included. In B-cell ALL patients, Treg cell frequencies increased significantly, with higher percentages in the PB. Absolute Treg cell counts were associated with absolute blast counts in the BM and PB and with an IL-8 concentration. The IL-8 and IL-6 levels were associated with the CXCR1 expression in PB Treg cells. In addition, a greater expression of FOXP3 was observed in leukemic blasts than in normal lymphoid precursors. Conclusions: These results suggest that the presence of Treg cells and cytokines in the tumor environment may correspond to mechanisms to evade the immune response. For that reason, it would be important to monitor these parameters in B-cell ALL to establish their effect on the disease prognosis.

Abstract Propagating earthquakes must overcome geometrical complexity on fault networks to grow into large, surface rupturing events. We map step‐overs, bends, gaps, splays, and strands of length scales ∼100–500 m from the surface ruptures of 31 strike‐slip earthquakes, recording whether ruptures propagated past the feature. We find that step‐overs and bends can arrest rupture and develop a statistical model for passing probability as a function of geometry for each group. Step‐overs wider than 1.2 km, single bends larger than 32°, and double bends larger than 38° are breached by rupture half of the time. ∼20% of the ruptures terminate on straight segments. We examine how the distribution of geometrical complexity influences surface rupture length, inferring an exponential relationship between rupture length and event probability. Our findings support that geometrical complexity helps limit the size of large events and provide insights into the competition between energy supply and dissipation during rupture propagation.

The rapid development of superior, highly stable, alkaline-medium-compatible, and nonprecious earth-abundant bifunctional electrocatalysts has garnered significant research interest. This interest aims to replace the costliest noble metals (Pt, Ir/IrO2, and Ru/RuO2) in renewable and green energy technologies for overall water splitting. However, there are still important limitations, such as lower stability and higher energy consumption. In this work, we report the synthesis of Cu-Co metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as a bifunctional electrocatalyst using a simple chemical precipitation technique. Especially, when 11.5 mM of Co is combined with Cu MOF, it exhibits excellent bifunctional activity for overall water splitting with a lower overpotential of 0.21 V (OER) and -0.71 V (HER) at a current density of 10 mA cm−2, which exhibits nearly several times more enhancement than that of pristine Cu and Co MOFs in a 1 M KOH electrolyte solution. The Tafel slope value of 130 mV/dec and the lower charge transfer resistance, along with relatively high stability for up to 12 h at the onset potential of OER and HER, are observed for the 11.5 mM Cu-Co MOF electrocatalyst. The present results open an alternative pathway for developing a novel design of highly efficient and scalable bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting.

Abstract Relevant virulence traits in Candida spp. are associated with dimorphic change and biofilm formation, which became an important target to reduce antifungal resistance. In this work, Co(II) complexes containing a benzotriazole derivative ligand showed a promising capacity of reducing these virulence traits. These complexes exhibited higher antifungal activities than the free ligands against all the Candida albicans and non-albicans strains tested, where compounds 2 and 4 showed minimum inhibitory concentration values between 15.62 and 125 μg mL−1. Moreover, four complexes (2–5) of Co(II) and Cu(II) with benzotriazole ligand were synthesized. These compounds were obtained as air-stable solids and characterized by melting point, thermogravimetric analysis, infrared, Raman and ultraviolet/visible spectroscopy. The analysis of the characterization data allowed us to identify that all the complexes had 1:1 (M:L) stoichiometries. Additionally, Density Functional Theory calculations were carried out for 2 and 3 to propose a probable geometry of both compounds. The conformer Da of 2 was the most stable conformer according to the Energy Decomposition Analysis; while the conformers of 3 have a fluxional behavior in this analysis that did not allow us to determine the most probable conformer. These results provide an important platform for the design of new compounds with antifungal activities and the capacity to attack other target of relevance to reduce antimicrobial resistance.

Summary: This study explores the lipid content and micromorphological features of sediment samples from two dwelling structures at the pre-Hispanic site of La Fortaleza in Santa Lucía de Tirajana (Gran Canaria, Spain). Previous field identification of possible sedimentary excrements inside the dwellings motivated chromatographic fecal biomarker analysis and micromorphology. The micromorphological samples reveal a complex dung-rich stratified sequence involving different layers of mixed composition, including reworked dung, clay, wood ash, and domestic refuse. The results of the lipid analysis corroborate the fecal nature of the sample and indicate the source animal: sheep. Coupled with the field evidence, the data suggest that the deposit is anthropogenic and represents a sequence of floor foundations, dung floors, and domestic and architectural refuse. This study provides valuable taxonomic and site use data for the understanding of the aboriginal societies of the Canary Islands and shows the efficacy of combining field observations with high-resolution geoarchaeological methods.

Summary: Archaeological research has increasingly focused on studying combustion features as valuable sources of information regarding past technological and cultural aspects. The use of microstratigraphic and biomolecular techniques enables the identification of combustion residues and substrate components, and infer about past fire-related activities and the environments. Our study conducted on a combustion feature (Level N, ∼100 Ka) at the Axlor cave, a Middle Paleolithic site in northern Iberia, exemplifies the interdisciplinary approach to combustion features. Micromorphological features revealed depositional activities associated with occupations such as hearth rake-out and trampling. Through molecular (n-alkanes, n-alcohols, and n-fatty acids) and isotopic analysis (δ13C16:0 and δ13C18:0), we infer the good preservation of organic matter, the contributions of non-ruminant fats, and the dead-wood gathering strategies by Neanderthal groups. By combining microstratigraphic and biomolecular approaches, our study significantly contributes to the advancement of our current understanding of Neanderthal pyrotechnology.

Objetivo: Analizar la fiabilidad de la concordancia entre cirujanos al utilizar la PGS-AC (Parkland Grading Scale for Acute Cholecystitis). Métodos: Se recolectaron 43 imágenes extraídas de vídeos de colecistectomías laparoscópicas y se realizó un cuestionario en línea que se envió a 18 cirujanos y médicos residentes, quienes clasificaron las imágenes según los criterios de la PGS-AC. Se evaluó la concordancia entre observadores aplicando la prueba kappa de Fleiss. Resultados: Se obtuvo un valor kappa de Fleiss global de 0.213, lo que corresponde a una baja concordancia interobservador. Factores como ser residente de cirugía, tener más de 10 años de experiencia realizando este tipo de procedimientos o realizar más de dos colecistectomías laparoscópicas por semana se relacionaron con una mayor concordancia en el diagnóstico. Conclusiones: La baja concordancia encontrada al utilizar la PGS-AC se traduce en una alta variación interobservador relacionada con múltiples variables, por lo que no estamos viendo lo mismo.

The analysis of the economic impact of occupational health and safety has been side-lined for many years. Various studies have acknowledged the importance of analysing the seriousness of accidents on the basis of the number of working days lost due to injuries sustained in such accidents in different economic sectors. In this longitudinal comparative study, we analyse the average duration of sick leave associated with 4,098,520 accidents that occurred in Spain between 2013 and 2019, and more specifically with 5724 accidents involving direct and indirect electrical contact. Based on the number of lost workdays, the relationship between the seriousness of electrical accidents and the economic sectors where they occur is explored via contingency tables in which statistical Chi-square value (χ2) was calculated. The main results obtained show that the average duration of sick leave shows an upward year-on-year trend in all three economic sectors. In addition, accidents due to direct and indirect electrical contact occur in all sectors, and the injuries produced in this type of accident are more severe than those produced in the sum of all accidents in Spain. Our figures show that the longest duration of sick leave occurs in the primary sector, followed by the tertiary and the secondary sectors. These results should prompt the competent authorisites to require businesses to maintain the equipment and facilities in good order, and to introduce effective supervision programmes that guarantee compliance with the measures enforced and reduce the serious consequences of electrical accidents.

Abstract Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is currently a growing epidemic disease that can lead to cirrhosis and hepatic cancer when it evolves into non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), a gap not well understood. To characterize this disease, pigs, considered to be one of the most similar to human experimental animal models, were used. To date, all swine-based settings have been carried out using rare predisposed breeds or long-term experiments. Herein, we fully describe a new experimental swine model for initial and reversible NASH using cross-bred animals fed on a high saturated fat, fructose, cholesterol, cholate, choline and methionine-deficient diet. To gain insight into the hepatic transcriptome that undergoes steatosis and steatohepatitis, we used RNA sequencing. This process significantly up-regulated 976 and down-regulated 209 genes mainly involved in cellular processes. Gene expression changes of 22 selected transcripts were verified by RT-qPCR. Lipid droplet area was positively associated with CD68, GPNMB, LGALS3, SLC51B and SPP1, and negatively with SQLE expressions. When these genes were tested in a second experiment of NASH reversion, LGALS3, SLC51B and SPP1 significantly decreased their expression. However, only LGALS3 was associated with lipid droplet areas. Our results suggest a role for LGALS3 in the transition of NAFLD to NASH.

This design ethnography was conducted in two fishing villages on Panay Island, Philippines. The study aimed to gather data about the mathematical activities of the fisherfolks to identify ethnomodels for the integration of learners' local mathematical knowledge into mathematics instruction. The local mathematical knowledge of the fisherfolks was used as inspiration and grounding for designing and developing a context-based teaching-learning material. Seven key informants were chosen purposively. Participant observation, ethnographic interviews, and elicitation techniques were used for data gathering and triangulation. Furthermore, IDEO's design thinking toolkit for human-centered design was used as a guide for designing and developing the teaching-learning material. The three-part analyses using LeCompte's item, pattern, and structure level analysis revealed that mathematical ideas were embedded in the activities of the fisherfolks and their cultural artifacts. Their mathematical ideas were elaborated in four ethnomodels integrated into the context-based activity book: "The Mathematics of the Fisherfolks".

Abstract Characterizing organic matter preserved in archaeological sediment is crucial to behavioral and paleoenvironmental investigations. This task becomes particularly challenging when considering microstratigraphic complexity. Most of the current analytical methods rely on loose sediment samples lacking spatial and temporal resolution at a microstratigraphic scale, adding uncertainty to the results. Here, we explore the potential of targeted molecular and isotopic biomarker analysis on polyester resin-impregnated sediment slabs from archaeological micromorphology, a technique that provides microstratigraphic control. We performed gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) and gas chromatography–isotope ratio mass spectromety (GC–IRMS) analyses on a set of samples including drill dust from resin-impregnated experimental and archaeological samples, loose samples from the same locations and resin control samples to assess the degree of interference of polyester resin in the GC–MS and Carbon-IRMS signals of different lipid fractions (n-alkanes, aromatics, n-ketones, alcohols, fatty acids and other high polarity lipids). The results show that biomarkers within the n-alkane, aromatic, n-ketone, and alcohol fractions can be identified. Further work is needed to expand the range of identifiable lipid biomarkers. This study represents the first micro-contextual approach to archaeological lipid biomarkers and contributes to the advance of archaeological science by adding a new method to obtain behavioral or paleoenvironmental proxies.

The objective of this study was to compare the accuracies of genomic prediction for milk yield, fat yield, and protein yield from Philippine dairy buffaloes using genomic best linear unbiased prediction (GBLUP) and single-step GBLUP (ssGBLUP) with the accuracies based on pedigree BLUP (pBLUP). To also assess the bias of the prediction, the regression coefficient (slope) of the adjusted phenotypes on the predicted breeding values (BVs) was also calculated. Two data sets were analyzed. The GENO data consisting of all female buffaloes that have both phenotypes and genotypes (n = 904 with 1,773,305-days lactation records) were analyzed using pBLUP and GBLUP. The ALL data, consisting of the GENO data plus females with phenotypes but not genotyped (n = 1,975 with 3,821,305-days lactation records), were analyzed using pBLUP and ssGBLUP. Animals were genotyped with the Affymetrix 90k buffalo genotyping array. After quality control, 60,827 single-nucleotide polymorphisms were used for downward analysis. A pedigree file containing 2,642 animals was used for pBLUP and ssGBLUP. Accuracy of prediction was calculated as the correlation between the predicted BVs of the test set and adjusted phenotypes, which were corrected for fixed effects, divided by the square root of the heritability of the trait, corrected for the number of lactations used in the test set. To assess the bias of the prediction, the regression coefficient (slope) of the adjusted phenotypes on the predicted BVs was also calculated. Results showed that genomic methods (GBLUP and ssGBLUP) provide more accurate predictions compared to pBLUP. Average GBLUP and ssGBLUP accuracies were 0.24 and 0.29, respectively, whereas average pBLUP accuracies (for GENO and ALL data) were 0.21 and 0.22, respectively. Slopes of the two genomic methods were also closer to one, indicating lesser bias, compared to pBLUP. Average GBLUP and ssGBLUP slopes were 0.89 and 0.84, respectively, whereas the average pBLUP (for GENO and ALL data) slopes were 0.80 and 0.54, respectively.

One of the applications in Materials Science carried out at the Center for Technological Applications and Nuclear Development (CEADEN) is the technical support through several methods used, based on applied Physics for the restoration and maintenance of structures and objects holding artistic and social relevance in Havana city. The aim of this paper is to present two examples of X -ray Fluorescence and Diffraction materials characterization, intended to support conservation and restoration activities of the Cuban cultural and historic heritage: analyzed objects were pottery roof tiles for the restoration of the mansion known as The Green House at 5th Avenue, Miramar, as well as pigments from a Cuban fine artist’s canvas and palette.

Among the applications of Materials Science and Engineering carried out by the Center for Technological Applications and Nuclear Development (CEADEN) / Centro de Aplicaciones Tecnológicas y Desarrollo Nuclear CEADEN is the use of various physical techniques to support the restoration and maintenance of buildings and other work objects of historical, cultural and social interest in Havana city. The field of Defectoscopy is addressed in this paper, where the applied Nondestructive testings also contributed to restore the cultural heritage, to upgrade the structural conditions at an important sport facility in Havana, and in a greater extent, to the safety of facilities of social significance, such as amusement parks. In this regard, three examples are presented: the inspection of structures during the restoration of the City Hall in the Museum of the Havana City at the Palace of Captains General; the welded joints testing during the restoration of the lighting system and the installation of the digital screen at the Latin American Stadium in Cerro municipality; and finally, the inspection systematically performed at maintenance works to critical elements and related devices at amusement parks.

Due to the fast growth of cities and populations, residential areas are increasingly close to Waste Water Treatment Plants (WWTPs), causing odour impact on neighbourhood and complaints. The present study focuses on assessing the impact on the residential vicinity of a WWTP in Valencia (Spain) of different superficial odour sources using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. Together with other software, CFD simulation is used as a complementary study to model pollutant dispersion. Unlike other simulation tools, CFD is bounded to smaller domains (1 or 2km). However, it performs more meaningful calculations and provides more detailed results, which allow obtaining resolutions at a scale below centimetre. The precise mesh generated in this work facilitates the study of the effect of the turbulence and the eddies caused by different obstacles (buildings, walls, etc.).

The swamp buffalo is a domesticated animal commonly found in Southeast Asia. It is a highly valued agricultural animal for smallholders, but the production of this species has unfortunately declined in recent decades due to rising farm mechanization. While swamp buffalo still plays a role in farmland cultivation, this species’ purposes has shifted from draft power to meat, milk, and hide production. The current status of swamp buffaloes in Southeast Asia is still understudied compared to its counterparts such as the riverine buffaloes and cattle. This review discusses the background of swamp buffalo, with an emphasis on recent work on this species in Southeast Asia, and associated genetics and genomics work such as cytogenetic studies, phylogeny, domestication and migration, genetic sequences and resources. Recent challenges to realize the potential of this species in the agriculture industry are also discussed. Limited genetic resource for swamp buffalo has called for more genomics work to be done on this species including decoding its genome. As the economy progresses and farm mechanization increases, research and development for swamp buffaloes are focused on enhancing its productivity through understanding the genetics of agriculturally important traits. The use of genomic markers is a powerful tool to efficiently utilize the potential of this animal for food security and animal conservation. Understanding its genetics and retaining and maximizing its adaptability to harsher environments are a strategic move for food security in poorer nations in Southeast Asia in the face of climate change.

Here, the authors separate the metal from the support by a controlled distance while maintaining the ability to promote defects via the use of carbon nanotube hydrogen highways.

A vortex-assisted liquid-liquid microextraction, based on a natural hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent made from the monoterpene thymol and octanoic fatty acid, was employed for the analysis of 11 phthalate esters and one adipate in kombucha (a tea-based fermented beverage). Separation and determination were performed using an ultra-high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) system coupled to a single quadrupole mass spectrometer. Confirmatory analyses were carried out through UHPLC tandem mass spectrometry. The full method was validated in terms of matrix effect, matrix-matched calibration, sensitivity, recovery, limits of detection and quantification and repeatability. Satisfactory determination coefficients for quadratic calibration curves (≥0.9938), recovery values (67–120%) and limits of detection (0.07–5.45 µg/L) were obtained. Analysis of 26 kombucha samples reported concentrations for dibutyl phthalate and dimethyl phthalate in the range between the limit of quantification (LOQ) and 16.18 ± 1.14 µg/L, although these phthalates were also detected under the LOQ in some of the analyzed samples. Only one of the samples bottled in plastic containers (7) did not present residues while only five of the 19 samples in glass bottles contained any plasticizer. However, the highest concentration was found in a kombucha bottled in food-grade glass. This work represents the first application in which phthalates and adipates are analyzed in kombuchas.

Este artículo plantea el diseño e implementación de una aplicación móvil que mediante un sistema de visión por computadora permite realizar el conteo de colonias de bacterias en cultivos microbianos disminuyendo significativamente el tiempo de la cuantificación y generando un método estándar de conteo para dispositivos móviles con sistema operativo Android. Así como un simulador de colonias de bacterias que permite generar muestras controlando parámetros de crecimiento de bacterias con el fin de ayudar a probar la eficiencia de la aplicación de conteo de colonias de bacterias.

This paper reports on a series of heating experiments that focus on n-alkanes extracted from leaf, bark, and xylem tissues of the Celtis australis plant. These lipid biomarkers were analysed for their compound-specific hydrogen isotopic composition (δ2Hwax) under limited oxygen conditions at 150, 250, 350, and 450 °C. Our results reveal isotopic variations in wax lipids of different plant organs during short-term low-temperature combustion. We conclude that, in the absence of a detailed characterisation of the depositional environment in advance of sampling, δ2Hwax values in archaeological or otherwise highly anthropogenic environments should be interpreted cautiously. In addition, we observed that variation in δ2Hwax of leaves is minimal at temperatures ≤ 350 °C, highlighting the potential for δ2Hwax in thermally altered combustion substrates to yield palaeoclimate information, which could allow researchers to investigate links between archaeological and climatic records at a high spatial and temporal resolution.

Abstract Background Malaria control in South America has vastly improved in the past decade, leading to a decrease in the malaria burden. Despite the progress, large parts of the continent continue to be at risk of malaria transmission, especially in northern South America. The objectives of this study were to assess the risk of malaria transmission and vector exposure in northern South America using multi-criteria decision analysis. Methods The risk of malaria transmission and vector exposure in northern South America was assessed using multi-criteria decision analysis, in which expert opinions were taken on the key environmental and population risk factors. Results Results from our risk maps indicated areas of moderate-to-high risk along rivers in the Amazon basin, along the coasts of the Guianas, the Pacific coast of Colombia and northern Colombia, in parts of Peru and Bolivia and within the Brazilian Amazon. Middle Paleolithic lithic and faunal assemblages throughout Eurasia reflect short-term Neanderthal occupations, which suggest high group mobility. However, the timing of these short-term occupations, a key factor to assess group mobility and territorial range, remains unresolved. Anthropogenic combustion structures are prominent in the Middle Paleolithic record and conceal information on the timing and intensity and natural setting of their associated human occupations. This paper examines a concentration of eleven combustion structures from unit Xb of El Salt, a Middle Paleolithic site in Spain through a geoarchaeological approach, in search of temporal, human impact and paleoenvironmental indicators to assess the timing, intensity and natural setting of the associated human occupations. The study was conducted using micromorphology, lipid biomarker analysis and compound specific isotope analysis. Results show in situ hearths built on different diachronic topsoils rich in herbivore excrements and angiosperm plant residues with rare anthropogenic remains. These data are suggestive of low impact, short-term human occupations separated by relatively long periods of time, with possible indicators of seasonality. Results also show an absence of conifer biomarkers in the mentioned topsoils and presence of conifer charcoal among the fuel residues (ash), indicating that fire wood was brought to the site from elsewhere. A microscopic and molecular approach in the study of combustion structures allows us to narrow down the timescale of archaeological analysis and contributes valuable information towards an understanding of Neanderthal group mobility and settlement patterns.

The domestic water buffalo is native to the Asian continent but through historical migrations and recent importations, nowadays has a worldwide distribution. The two types of water buffalo, i.e., river and swamp, display distinct morphological and behavioral traits, different karyotypes and also have different purposes and geographical distributions. River buffaloes from Pakistan, Iran, Turkey, Egypt, Romania, Bulgaria, Italy, Mozambique, Brazil and Colombia, and swamp buffaloes from China, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia and Brazil were genotyped with a species-specific medium-density 90K SNP panel. We estimated the levels of molecular diversity and described population structure, which revealed historical relationships between populations and migration events. Three distinct gene pools were identified in pure river as well as in pure swamp buffalo populations. Genomic admixture was seen in the Philippines and in Brazil, resulting from importations of animals for breed improvement. Our results were largely consistent with previous archeological, historical and molecular-based evidence for two independent domestication events for river- and swamp-type buffaloes, which occurred in the Indo-Pakistani region and close to the China/Indochina border, respectively. Based on a geographical analysis of the distribution of diversity, our evidence also indicated that the water buffalo spread out of the domestication centers followed two major divergent migration directions: river buffaloes migrated west from the Indian sub-continent while swamp buffaloes migrated from northern Indochina via an east-south-eastern route. These data suggest that the current distribution of water buffalo diversity has been shaped by the combined effects of multiple migration events occurred at different stages of the post-domestication history of the species.

Abstract Background Changes in land use and land cover (LULC) as well as climate are likely to affect the geographic distribution of malaria vectors and parasites in the coming decades. At present, malaria transmission is concentrated mainly in the Amazon basin where extensive agriculture, mining, and logging activities have resulted in changes to local and regional hydrology, massive loss of forest cover, and increased contact between malaria vectors and hosts. Methods Employing presence-only records, bioclimatic, topographic, hydrologic, LULC and human population data, we modeled the distribution of malaria and two of its dominant vectors, Anopheles darlingi, and Anopheles nuneztovari s.l. in northern South America using the species distribution modeling platform Maxent. Results Results from our land change modeling indicate that about 70,000 km2 of forest land would be lost by 2050 and 78,000 km2 by 2070 compared to 2010. The Maxent model predicted zones of relatively high habitat suitability for malaria and the vectors mainly within the Amazon and along coastlines. While areas with malaria are expected to decrease in line with current downward trends, both vectors are predicted to experience range expansions in the future. Elevation, annual precipitation and temperature were influential in all models both current and future. Human population mostly affected An. darlingi distribution while LULC changes influenced An. nuneztovari s.l. distribution. Conclusion As the region tackles the challenge of malaria elimination, investigations such as this could be useful for planning and management purposes and aid in predicting and addressing potential impediments to elimination.

El estudio tuvo como objetivo determinar la frecuencia de sobrepeso y obesidad en indígenas nahuas de Ixtaczoquitlán, Veracruz, México. Para ello, se realizó un estudio transversal entre los años 2010-2011; donde se calculó el índice de masa corporal (IMC). Para la definición de sobrepeso y obesidad se emplearon las categorías de la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) y los de la Norma Oficial Mexicana (NOM). Se incluyó 227 nahuas (77,5% mujeres). Según los lineamientos de la OMS, la proporción de nahuas con sobrepeso fue de 41%, y de obesidad 36,5%; y según la NOM fue de 11,4 y 69,2% respectivamente. En conclusión, la frecuencia de sobrepeso y obesidad en indígenas nahuas es alta. Deben realizarse estudios enfocados a determinar la prevalencia y factores de riesgo y, con ello, desarrollar estrategias de prevención que mejoren la calidad de salud de estas poblacionesThe study was aimed at determining the prevalence of overweight and obesity in indigenous nahuas from Ixtaczoquitlán, Veracruz, Mexico. In this study, the impact of the use of backscattering intensity and texture features obtained from TerraSAR-X images for LULC classification of agricultural and forest areas, and its combination with features extracted from Landsat 7 EMT+ optical imagery is analyzed. The performance of texture descriptors on radar images is evaluated. After data pre-processing and the definition of classes in the study area, every object is described by means of a set of features computed from the TerraSAR-X and optical imagery, using a plot-based approach. Cadastral cartographic limits are employed for objects definition. Next, objects are classified using decision trees combined with boosting techniques. The classification results are compared to the LULC contained in the testing database, and the errors evaluated in terms of the different groups of variables, the source of data used, and their performance for the variety of classes considered. The classification results bring some possibilities and limitations of combining features from optical and radar imagery, evidence the complementary information provided by both types of data to face these applications.
