Recent epidemiological studies suggested to lower the threshold dose for radiation induced cataract in the eye lens. Therefore, eye lens radiation protection became to play a more important role in personal dosimetry. The main objective of this work is to propose a new methodology for prototyping and benchmarking of an eye lens dosiemter based on the equivalent dose to the sensitive part of the eye lens, using CAD Software and Geant 4 Monte Carlo simulations with mesh modeling and 3D printing. A 3D printed dosimeter was type tested based on IEC 62387:2012, in terms of energy and angular dependence for the measurements of Hp(3). The results show that the methodology employed is suitable for the development of new eye lens dosimeters.

The aim of this work was to estimate patient’s organ absorbed doses from pediatric helical head computed tomography (CT) examinations using the Size-Specific Dose Estimate (SSDE) methodology and to determine organ dose to SSDE conversion coefficients for clinical routine. Patient-specific organ and tissue absorbed doses from 139 Head CT scans performed in pediatric patients from 0 to 15 years old in a Public Hospital in Tunja, Colombia were estimated. The calculations were made through Monte Carlo simulations, based on patient-specific information, dosimetric CT quantities (CTDIvol, DLP) and age-specific computational human phantoms matched to patients on the basis of gender and size. SSDE showed to be a good quantity for estimate patient-specific organ doses from pediatric head CT examinations when appropriate phantom’s attenuation-based size metrics are chosen to match for any patient size. Strong correlations between absorbed dose and SSDE were found for skin (R2 = 0.99), brain (R2 = 0.98) and eyes (R2 = 0.97), respectively. Besides, a good correlation between SSDE and absorbed dose to the red bone marrow (tissue extended outside the scan coverage) was observed (R2 = 0.94). SSDE-to-organ-dose conversion coefficients obtained in this study provide a practical way to estimate patient-specific organ head CT doses.

The purpose of bowtie filters in CT scanners is to homogenize the x-ray intensity measured by the detectors in order to improve the image quality and at the same time to reduce the dose to the patient because of the preferential filtering near the periphery of the fan beam. For CT dosimetry, especially for Monte Carlo calculations of organ and tissue absorbed doses to patients, it is important to take the effect of bowtie filters into account. However, material composition and dimensions of these filters are proprietary. Consequently, a method for bowtie filter simulation independent of access to proprietary data and/or to a specific scanner would be of interest to many researchers involved in CT dosimetry. This study presents such a method based on the weighted computer tomography dose index, CTDIw, defined in two cylindrical PMMA phantoms of 16 cm and 32 cm diameter. With an EGSnrc-based Monte Carlo (MC) code, ratios CTDIw/CTDI100,a were calculated for a specific CT scanner using PMMA bowtie filter models based on sigmoid Boltzmann functions combined with a scanner filter factor (SFF) which is modified during calculations until the calculated MC CTDIw/CTDI100,a matches ratios CTDIw/CTDI100,a, determined by measurements or found in publications for that specific scanner. Once the scanner-specific value for an SFF has been found, the bowtie filter algorithm can be used in any MC code to perform CT dosimetry for that specific scanner. The bowtie filter model proposed here was validated for CTDIw/CTDI100,a considering 11 different CT scanners and for CTDI100,c, CTDI100,p and their ratio considering 4 different CT scanners. Additionally, comparisons were made for lateral dose profiles free in air and using computational anthropomorphic phantoms. CTDIw/CTDI100,a determined with this new method agreed on average within 0.89% (max. 3.4%) and 1.64% (max. 4.5%) with corresponding data published by CTDosimetry (www.impactscan.org) for the CTDI HEAD and BODY phantoms, respectively. Comparison with results calculated using proprietary data for the PHILIPS Brilliance 64 scanner showed agreement on average within 2.5% (max. 5.8%) and with data measured for that scanner within 2.1% (max. 3.7%). Ratios of CTDI100,c/CTDI100, p for this study and corresponding data published by CTDosimetry (www.impactscan.org) agree on average within about 11% (max. 28.6%). Lateral dose profiles calculated with the proposed bowtie filter and with proprietary data agreed within 2% (max. 5.9%), and both calculated data agreed within 5.4% (max. 11.2%) with measured results. Application of the proposed bowtie filter and of the exactly modelled filter to human phantom Monte Carlo calculations show agreement on the average within less than 5% (max. 7.9%) for organ and tissue absorbed doses.

The purpose of this study is the development of paediatric reference phantoms for newborn and 1-year-old infants to be used for the calculation of organ and tissue equivalent doses in radiation protection. The study proposes a method for developing anatomically highly sophisticated paediatric phantoms without using medical images. The newborn and 1-year-old hermaphrodite phantoms presented here were developed using three-dimensional (3D) modelling software applied to anatomical information taken from atlases, textbooks and images provided by the Department of Anatomy of the Federal University of Pernambuco, Brazil. The method uses polygon mesh surfaces to model body contours, the shape of organs as well as their positions and orientations in the human body. Organ and tissue masses agree with corresponding data given by the International Commission on Radiological Protection for newborn and 1-year-old reference children. Bones were segmented into cortical bone, spongiosa, medullary marrow and cartilage to allow for the use of μCT images of trabecular bone for skeletal dosimetry. Anatomical results show 3D images of the phantoms' surfaces, organs and skeletons, as well as tables with organ and tissue masses or skeletal tissue volumes. Dosimetric results present comparisons of organ and tissue absorbed doses or specific absorbed fractions between the newborn and 1-year-old phantoms and corresponding data for other paediatric stylised or voxel phantoms. Most differences were found to be below 10%.

Two skeletal dosimetry methods using µCT images of human bone have recently been developed: the paired-image radiation transport (PIRT) model introduced by researchers at the University of Florida (UF) in the US and the systematic–periodic cluster (SPC) method developed by researchers at the Federal University of Pernambuco in Brazil. Both methods use µCT images of trabecular bone (TB) to model spongiosa regions of human bones containing marrow cavities segmented into soft tissue volumes of active marrow (AM), trabecular inactive marrow and the bone endosteum (BE), which is a 50 µm thick layer of marrow on all TB surfaces and on cortical bone surfaces next to TB as well as inside the medullary cavities. With respect to the radiation absorbed dose, the AM and the BE are sensitive soft tissues for the induction of leukaemia and bone cancer, respectively. The two methods differ mainly with respect to the number of bone sites and the size of the µCT images used in Monte Carlo calculations and they apply different methods to simulate exposure from radiation sources located outside the skeleton. The PIRT method calculates dosimetric quantities in isolated human bones while the SPC method uses human bones embedded in the body of a phantom which contains all relevant organs and soft tissues. Consequently, the SPC method calculates absorbed dose to the AM and to the BE from particles emitted by radionuclides concentrated in organs or from radiation sources located outside the human body in one calculation step. In order to allow for similar calculations of AM and BE absorbed doses using the PIRT method, the so-called dose response functions (DRFs) have been developed based on absorbed fractions (AFs) of energy for electrons isotropically emitted in skeletal tissues. The DRFs can be used to transform the photon fluence in homogeneous spongiosa regions into absorbed dose to AM and BE. This paper will compare AM and BE AFs of energy from electrons emitted in skeletal tissues calculated with the SPC and the PIRT method and AM and BE absorbed doses and AFs calculated with PIRT-based DRFs and with the SPC method. The results calculated with the two skeletal dosimetry methods agree well if one takes the differences between the two models properly into account. Additionally, the SPC method will be updated with larger µCT images of TB.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is the development of reference pediatric phantoms for 5- and 10-year-old children to be used for the calculation of organ and tissue equivalent doses in radiation protection. Methods: The study proposes a method for developing anatomically highly sophisticated pediatric phantoms without using medical images. The 5- and 10-year-old male and female phantoms presented here were developed using 3D modeling software applied to anatomical information taken from atlases and textbooks. The method uses polygon mesh surfaces to model body contours, the shape of organs as well as their positions, and orientations in the human body. Organ and tissue masses comply with the corresponding data given by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) for the 5- and 10-year-old reference children. Bones were segmented into cortical bone, spongiosa, medullary marrow, and cartilage to allow for the use of micro computer tomographic ({mu}CT) images of trabecular bone for skeletal dosimetry. Results: The four phantoms, a male and a female for each age, and their organs are presented in 3D images and their organ and tissue masses in tables which show the compliance of the ICRP reference values. Dosimetric data, calculated for the reference pediatric phantoms by Montemore » Carlo methods were compared with corresponding data from adult mesh phantoms and pediatric stylized phantoms. The comparisons show reasonable agreement if the anatomical differences between the phantoms are properly taken into account. Conclusions: Pediatric phantoms were developed without using medical images of patients or volunteers for the first time. The models are reference phantoms, suitable for regulatory dosimetry, however, the 3D modeling method can also be applied to medical images to develop patient-specific phantoms.« less

When the human body is exposed to ionizing radiation, among the soft tissues at risk are the active marrow (AM) and the bone endosteum (BE) located in tiny, irregular cavities of trabecular bone. Determination of absorbed fractions (AFs) of energy or absorbed dose in the AM and the BE represent one of the major challenges of dosimetry. Recently, at the Department of Nuclear Energy at the Federal University of Pernambuco, a skeletal dosimetry method based on µCT images of trabecular bone introduced into the spongiosa voxels of human phantoms has been developed and applied mainly to external exposure to photons. This study uses the same method to calculate AFs of energy and S-values (absorbed dose per unit activity) for electron-emitting radionuclides known to concentrate in skeletal tissues. The modelling of the skeletal tissue regions follows ICRP110, which defines the BE as a 50 µm thick sub-region of marrow next to the bone surfaces. The paper presents mono-energetic AFs for the AM and the BE for eight different skeletal regions for electron source energies between 1 keV and 10 MeV. The S-values are given for the beta emitters (14)C, (59)Fe, (131)I, (89)Sr, (32)P and (90)Y. Comparisons with results from other investigations showed good agreement provided that differences between methodologies and trabecular bone volume fractions were properly taken into account. Additionally, a comparison was made between specific AFs of energy in the BE calculated for the actual 50 µm endosteum and the previously recommended 10 µm endosteum. The increase in endosteum thickness leads to a decrease of the endosteum absorbed dose by up to 3.7 fold when bone is the source region, while absorbed dose increases by ∼20% when the beta emitters are in marrow.

The calibration procedure in radiotherapy treatments is very important and a sensitive task due to the high doses delivered to the patients. Generally, the air-kerma cavity standards for 60Co gamma rays are graphite cavity ionization chambers. In this work a new parallel-plate graphite ionization chamber was studied to analyze its potential use as a reference instrument. In order to evaluate its performance in 60Co beams, it was submitted to several characterization tests. Moreover, Monte Carlo simulations were undertaken using the EGSnrc code to study the influence of the chamber components on its response. The results obtained showed that this new ionization chamber presented a satisfactory performance in all evaluated tests.

The aim of this work was to study the performance of a pencil ionization chamber with a sensitive volume of only 1.06 cm3 and a length of 3.0 cm, developed at the Calibration Laboratory of the IPEN, in very low-energy radiotherapy X-ray beams. These beams are still used for certain skin cancer treatments due to their rapid attenuation in tissue. The dosimeter performance was evaluated in some tests proposed by the IEC 60731 standard: short- and long-term stability and linearity of response. For a complete analysis of the dosimeter response, the EGSnrc Monte Carlo simulation was utilized to investigate the influence of its different parts on the ionization chamber response. All results of the tests were in accordance with the recommended limits, and this work shows that it is possible to extend the application of this pencil-type ionization chamber developed at the LCI.

Among computational models, voxel phantoms based on computer tomographic (CT), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) or colour photographic images of patients, volunteers or cadavers have become popular in recent years. Although being true to nature representations of scanned individuals, voxel phantoms have limitations, especially when walled organs have to be segmented or when volumes of organs or body tissues, like adipose, have to be changed. Additionally, the scanning of patients or volunteers is usually made in supine position, which causes a shift of internal organs towards the ribcage, a compression of the lungs and a reduction of the sagittal diameter especially in the abdominal region compared to the regular anatomy of a person in the upright position, which in turn can influence organ and tissue absorbed or equivalent dose estimates. This study applies tools developed recently in the areas of computer graphics and animated films to the creation and modelling of 3D human organs, tissues, skeletons and bodies based on polygon mesh surfaces. Female and male adult human phantoms, called FASH (Female Adult meSH) and MASH (Male Adult meSH), have been designed using software, such as MakeHuman, Blender, Binvox and ImageJ, based on anatomical atlases, observing at the same time organ masses recommended by the International Commission on Radiological Protection for the male and female reference adult in report no 89. 113 organs, bones and tissues have been modelled in the FASH and the MASH phantoms representing locations for adults in standing posture. Most organ and tissue masses of the voxelized versions agree with corresponding data from ICRP89 within a margin of 2.6%. Comparison with the mesh-based male RPI_AM and female RPI_AF phantoms shows differences with respect to the material used, to the software and concepts applied, and to the anatomies created.

Female and male adult human phantoms, called FASH (Female Adult meSH) and MASH (Male Adult meSH), have been developed in the first part of this study using 3D animation software and anatomical atlases to replace the image-based FAX06 and the MAX06 voxel phantoms. 3D modelling methods allow for phantom development independent from medical images of patients, volunteers or cadavers. The second part of this study investigates the dosimetric implications for organ and tissue equivalent doses due to the anatomical differences between the new and the old phantoms. These differences are mainly caused by the supine position of human bodies during scanning in order to acquire digital images for voxel phantom development. Compared to an upright standing person, in image-based voxel phantoms organs are often coronally shifted towards the head and sometimes the sagittal diameter of the trunk is reduced by a gravitational change of the fat distribution. In addition, volumes of adipose and muscle tissue shielding internal organs are sometimes too small, because adaptation of organ volumes to ICRP-based organ masses often occurs at the expense of general soft tissues, such as adipose, muscle or unspecified soft tissue. These effects have dosimetric consequences, especially for partial body exposure, such as in x-ray diagnosis, but also for whole body external exposure and for internal exposure. Using the EGSnrc Monte Carlo code, internal and external exposure to photons and electrons has been simulated with both pairs of phantoms. The results show differences between organ and tissue equivalent doses for the upright standing FASH/MASH and the image-based supine FAX06/MAX06 phantoms of up to 80% for external exposure and up to 100% for internal exposure. Similar differences were found for external exposure between FASH/MASH and REGINA/REX, the reference voxel phantoms of the International Commission on Radiological Protection. Comparison of effective doses for external photon exposure showed good agreement between FASH/MASH and REGINA/REX, but large differences between FASH/MASH and the mesh-based RPI_AM and the RPI_AF phantoms, developed at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI).

OBJETIVO: Desenvolver um programa computacional para avaliar e controlar as características das curvas sensitométricas. MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS: Para o desenvolvimento do programa, foi elaborado um método de obtenção dos valores das características sensitométricas, de filmes de baixo e alto contraste, sem a necessidade da fixação de degraus de referência. RESULTADOS: O programa, denominado Sensito, foi implementado e testado utilizando dados sensitométricos de curvas características dos departamentos de radiologia convencional, hemodinâmica e mamografia. Ficou comprovada a possibilidade da análise das curvas sensitométricas destas áreas sem a necessidade de ajustes, dependentes dos usuários, e sem incorrer em desvios nos parâmetros sensitométricos avaliados e na variação destes. CONCLUSÃO: O programa possibilita a criação de um banco de dados de curvas sensitométricas para diferentes processadoras de uma instituição, gerando com facilidade as curvas sensitométrica e gama, de um registro, e os gráficos de constância das características sensitométricas avaliadas, fornecendo importante ferramenta para manter o controle sensitométrico.

OBJETIVO: Comparar dados de dosimetria e fluência de fótons entre diferentes modelos de mama, discutindo as aplicações em testes de constância e estudos dosimétricos aplicados à mamografia. MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS: Foram simulados diferentes modelos homogêneos e um modelo antropomórfico de mama tipo voxel, sendo contabilizadas: a dose total absorvida no modelo, a dose absorvida pelo tecido glandular/material equivalente, e a dose absorvida e a fluência de fótons em diferentes profundidades dos modelos. Uma câmara de ionização simulada coletou o kerma de entrada na pele. As combinações alvo-filtro estudadas foram Mo-30Mo e Mo-25Rh, para diferentes potenciais aceleradores de 26 kVp até 34 kVp. RESULTADOS: A dose glandular normalizada, comparada ao modelo voxel, resultou em diferenças entre -15% até -21% para RMI, -10% para PhantomMama e 10% para os modelos Barts e Keithley. A variação dos valores da camada semirredutora entre modelos foi geralmente inferior a 10% para todos os volumes sensíveis. CONCLUSÃO: Para avaliar a dose glandular normalizada e a dose glandular, em mamas médias, recomenda-se o modelo de Dance. Os modelos homogêneos devem ser utilizados para realizar testes de constância em dosimetria, mas eles não são indicados para estimar a dosimetria em pacientes reais OBJECTIVE: To compare data regarding dosimetry and photons fluence in different breast phantoms, discussing constancy tests and dosimetry applied to mammography. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Different homogeneous breast phantoms and one anthropomorphic voxel phantom were developed for collection of data regarding total absorbed dose in the phantom, absorbed dose in the glandular tissue material-equivalent, absorbed dose and photons fluence at different depths in the phantoms. A simulated ionization chamber collected the entrance skin kerma. Target-filter combinations (Mo-30Mo and Mo-25Rh) were studied for different accelerating potentials of 26 kVp to 34 kVp. RESULTS: As compared with the voxel phantom, the normalized glandular dose resulted in differences from -15% to -21% for RMI, -10% for PhantomMama, and 10% for the Barts and Keithley models. The half-value layer variation was generally < 10% for all the sensitive volumes. CONCLUSION: The phantom proposed by Dance is recommended for evaluating the glandular dose and normalized glandular dose in a standard breast. Homogeneous phantoms should be utilized for constancy tests in dosimetry, but they are not appropriate for estimating dosimetry in actual patients

In geology the simulation of the sedimention process deposition is very used on different kind of studies. However a great problem is to get the information without destroy the architecture of the deposited material (since now named testimonial). Usually they do slice the real sample and they take pictures of it. However this technique is too aggressive (invasive) and usually cause damage to the testimonial. This work aim is to define characteristic of imaging these testimonial to use the medical imaging processing techniques for the analysis of objects made up of coal. Two objects were imaged: a short testimonial with acrylic resin, called Model Carbonated with Acrylic (MCA), and a greater testimony, contained within a PVC container and immersed in water, called Model Carbonated Aquarius (MCAq). Were generated plot profiles and images based on the topogram and sonogram, showing its good contrast and resolution.

Does the posture of a patient have an effect on the organ and tissue absorbed doses caused by x-ray examinations? This study aims to find the answer to this question, based on Monte Carlo (MC) simulations of commonly performed x-ray examinations using adult phantoms modelled to represent humans in standing as well as in the supine posture. The recently published FASH (female adult mesh) and MASH (male adult mesh) phantoms have the standing posture. In a first step, both phantoms were updated with respect to their anatomy: glandular tissue was separated from adipose tissue in the breasts, visceral fat was separated from subcutaneous fat, cartilage was segmented in ears, nose and around the thyroid, and the mass of the right lung is now 15% greater than the left lung. The updated versions are called FASH2_sta and MASH2_sta (sta = standing). Taking into account the gravitational effects on organ position and fat distribution, supine versions of the FASH2 and the MASH2 phantoms have been developed in this study and called FASH2_sup and MASH2_sup. MC simulations of external whole-body exposure to monoenergetic photons and partial-body exposure to x-rays have been made with the standing and supine FASH2 and MASH2 phantoms. For external whole-body exposure for AP and PA projection with photon energies above 30 keV, the effective dose did not change by more than 5% when the posture changed from standing to supine or vice versa. Apart from that, the supine posture is quite rare in occupational radiation protection from whole-body exposure. However, in the x-ray diagnosis supine posture is frequently used for patients submitted to examinations. Changes of organ absorbed doses up to 60% were found for simulations of chest and abdomen radiographs if the posture changed from standing to supine or vice versa. A further increase of differences between posture-specific organ and tissue absorbed doses with increasing whole-body mass is to be expected.

The silicone gel implant for breast have been, more and more, a common procedure among women of different ages around the world. That way it is important to know how it can affect the dose on sensitive tissues around the implanted silicone. On this work we are studying the influence on absorbed dose distribution map into the patient, especially on tissues close to the silicone implant for diagnostic radiological procedures comparing a map of dose distribution for voxel model simulating patients with and without breast silicone implant. So three models of woman trunk considering were built considering the breasts with and without silicon implant. The three developed models were introduced into Geant4 code (version 9.2.p01) and were simulated three different parallel beam sources: frontal, lateral and rotational. The photons energy were sorted considering the distribution that represents the x-radiation spectra emitted by a tungsten target and considers additional filtration of 3mmAl at difference peak tensions. For all the studied cases the simulations considering the anterior-posterior exposures positioning of silicone implant produce a significant increase on glandular dose. For peak tension of 80kVp was calculated having a mean increase on glandular dose of 12% for the both breast simulated with silicone implant over and under the pectoral muscle. This difference decrease when the kVp increase been registered a mean value of 4,5% for the peak tension of 120kVp. There was no significant difference for the absorbed glandular dose calculated for the lateral positioning exposure, been presented differences always under 3,5% for 80kVp spectra. For higher kVp the differences presented were inferior to the statistical fluctuation due the simulation process. As conclusion the simulations realized in this work shown that the presence of silicone implant can, considering some cases, increase significantly the glandular dose due the backscattering.

In the area of radiation protection in radiology and nuclear medicine it is common practice to use adult human phantoms to simulate average humans for the assessment of organ and tissue absorbed doses. However, most patients do not have body heights and/or body weights of the average human, which can lead to significant errors for organ and tissue absorbed doses to be determined for a specific patient. In a special phantom development project at the Departamento de Energia Nuclear of the Universidade Federal of Pernambuco, 32 adult human phantoms, 16 for each sex, will be designed to cover a certain range of body heights and body weights, to be used in organ and tissue absorbed dose assessment tools, like in the recently released software CALDose_X. This study reports mainly on the first step of this project, namely the improvement of the existing adult phantoms MAX06 and FAX06 to become the starting points for the development of the new phantom series.

The aim of this work is to compare the dosimetric data and the photon fluency in three positions among different homogeneous models to a voxel model. Were simulated the mammographic dosimetric homogeneous models and a breast voxel model which represents 4.0 cm compressed woman breast, with 50% of glandular tissue. Were simulated the photon spectra of Mo-30Mo from 26 kVp up to 34 kVp; and Mo-25Rh from 26 kVp up to 34 kVp characterized by the HVL values. For all techniques simulated the normalized glandular dose was superestimated by the BR12 homogeneous models and underestimated by PMMA homogeneous models comparing to voxel model. Among the models studied was the model proposed by Dance that presented a behavior similar to voxel model, however it underestimates all the D gN .

Purpose: The objective of this study is to realize a computational dosimetry on a simplified model of miocardic perfusion, considering the usual different ways to describe the spectra emitted for Tc‐99m. Method and Materials: The GEANT4 code was used to simulate two geometries: the radial dose distribution from an isotropic point source described by the three spectra, modeled with photon emission from the center of a 1.3‐m‐diam sphere of muscle tissue; and a second considering an uniform distribution of Tc‐99m in the heartmuscle of the adult male voxel model MAX, to take the organs dose distribution. The different ways to describe the spectra emitted for Tc‐99m was: monoenergetic spectrum of 140 keV; three photonsemissions spectrum (2.1, 141 and 143 keV) and total spectrum (including characteristics x‐rays and Auger electrons).Results: For distance low than 1 cm from the point source the radial dose distribution is higher for total spectrum. The radiation dose in a sphere with 0.01 mm defined at the center of the sphere of muscle was 0.369 mGy Bq1 h1 (total spectrum), 0.276 mGy Bq1 h1 (three photonspectrum), and 0.005 mGy Bq1 h1 (monoenergetic spectrum). This data shown that include Auger electrons,characteristic x‐rays, and low energy gamma give a significant contribution to total energy deposition. This results corroborates the simulations realized using the voxel model. The data variation shown that monoenergetic and three gamma spectra, comparing to total spectra simulated, produce a decrease on absorbed dose on cardiac tissue of 19.2% and 7.1%, respectively. Conclusion: The results shown that the combined transport of electrons Auger and characteristics x‐rays of the Tc‐99m increase the radiation dose, especially on organs/tissues closer to those have had absorbed the radiopharmaceuticals. This study indicates the importance on describe the complete radiopharmaceuticalsspectrum on dosimetric simulations in Nuclear Medicine.

The aim of this work was to investigate the influence of the eyelid on the absorbed dose distribution in eye tissues. The study was performed using two versions of the female adult head phantom (FeH) connected to the GEANT4 Monte Carlo code: one has the eyes open and the second, closed. The calculations of organ dose, normalised to air KERMA free-in-air, were done for external exposures to photon radiation with energies between 10 and 200 keV. Three parallel beam sources were studied: anterior-posterior, left lateral and rotational. The doses between the two phantoms were compared with evident differences. The results show that for photon sources with energies lower than 30 keV, the attenuations by the eyelid are relevant in reducing the dose in the eye lens and cornea. This suggests that medical exposure protocols that use this energy range should consider advising patients to close their eyes during the exposure.
