Abstract

Abstract It is shown that contrary to claims of Lebiedowicz et al. (Phys Rev D 105(1):014022, 2022) the formulated in the proper physical variables Low theorem (Low in Phys Rev 110(4):974–977, 1958) for soft photon emission does not require any modification. We also reject the criticism in Lebiedowicz et al. (2022) of the papers (Burnett and Kroll in Phys. Rev. Lett. 20:86–88,1968; Lipatov in Nucl Phys B 307:705–720, 1988). At the same time, we identify some inaccuracies in Burnett and Kroll (1968) in the presentation of the soft-photon theorem for the case of spin-one-half particles. We also point out shortcomings in consideration of the Low theorem in the classic textbooks (Berestetskii et al. in Quantum electrodynamics. Pergamon Press, Oxford, 1982; Lifshitz and Pitaevsky in Relativistic quantum theory, part 2, Fizmatlit, 2002).

Abstract

Abstract We analyse the cross-section of events with Large Rapidity Gaps observed in proton–lead collisions by the CMS Collaboration ( arXiv:2301.07630 ). The role of the transverse size of elementary pN amplitude is discussed. We emphasize that the cross-section of incoming proton dissociation caused by the photon radiated off the lead ion is close to the value of $$d\sigma /d\Delta \eta ^F$$ d σ / d Δ η F measured by the CMS, and it is not clear why there is no room in the data for the Pomeron-induced contribution

4. Dynamics of diffractive dissociation

Abstract

Abstract We describe a QCD based model which incorporates the main properties of the inclusive particle distributions expected for diffractive processes, including the diffractive dissociation at high energies. We study, in turn, the total cross section, $$\sigma _\mathrm{tot}$$ σ tot , the differential elastic, $$d\sigma _\mathrm{el}/dt$$ d σ el / d t , cross section, the dependence of the single proton dissociation cross section, $$\xi d\sigma ^\mathrm{SD}/d\xi $$ ξ d σ SD / d ξ , on the momentum fraction, $$\xi =1-x_L$$ ξ = 1 - x L , lost by the leading proton, the multiplicity distributions in inelastic (non-diffractive) collisions and in the processes of dissociation. Besides this we calculate the mean transverse momenta of the ‘wee partons’ (secondaries) produced in the case of dissociation (that is in the processes with a large rapidity gap) and compare it with that in inelastic interactions.

Abstract

Abstract We present the results of the new SuperChic 4 Monte Carlo implementation of photon-initiated production in proton–proton collisions, considering as a first example the case of lepton pair production. This is based on the structure function calculation of the underlying process, and focusses on a complete account of the various contributing channels, including the case where a rapidity gap veto is imposed. We provide a careful treatment of the contributions where either (single dissociation), both (double dissociation) or neither (elastic) proton interacts inelastically and dissociates, and interface our results to Pythia for showering and hadronization. The particle decay distribution from dissociation system, as well the survival probability for no additional proton–proton interactions, are both fully accounted for; these are essential for comparing to data where a rapidity gap veto is applied. We present detailed results for the impact of the veto requirement on the differential cross section, compare to and find good agreement with ATLAS 7 TeV data on semi-exclusive production, and provide a new precise evaluation of the background from semi-exclusive lepton pair production to SUSY particle production in compressed mass scenarios, which is found to be low.

6. Isolating the Odderon in central production in high energy pA and AA collisions

Abstract

Abstract We study the rapidity dependence of the central exclusive production cross sections of C-even mesons in pA and AA collisions, where A is a heavy ion. We observe qualitatively different behaviour of the contributions arising from $$\gamma $$ γ -Odderon and Pomeron–Pomeron fusion mechanisms. This can be used to extract the Odderon signal from the events of $$f_2$$ f2 mesons exclusively produced in the forward region. Estimates, obtained using expected values of the Odderon cross section, indicate that the $$\gamma $$ γ -Odderon contribution may exceed by a few times the Pomeron-induced background in Pb–Pb collisions. Moreover, the Odderon effect can be clearly seen in terms of the asymmetry in pA and AA collisions with the beam and target reversed. It is particularly interesting to note that the asymmetry for $$\gamma $$ γ -Odderon fusion reaches its maximum value close to 1 in the forward direction, whereas the asymmetry for the Pomeron–Pomeron fusion contribution is small. The role of additional interactions of the $$f_2$$ f2 meson with nucleons in the heavy ion, and also the contributions from secondary Reggeons, are estimated. The photon–Odderon contribution has a large normalisation uncertainty but the enhanced cross-section in the forward region combined with a large asymmetry increases the chance of experimentally detecting the Odderon.

7. The fusion of hard and soft Pomerons: 3-jet diffractive production

Abstract

Abstract We consider the central exclusive production of high $$E_T$$ ET jets $$pp\rightarrow p+(X+\mathrm{dijet})+p$$ pp→p+(X+dijet)+p . In particular we study the possible contamination of the purely exclusive signal by semi-exclusive production where no other secondaries are emitted in one hemisphere, between the highest $$E_T$$ ET dijet and the recoil proton, while in the other hemisphere a third jet, plus possibly additional hadron activity, is allowed, but still separated from the incoming proton by a large rapidity gap. This process arising from the fusion of a hard and a soft Pomeron has not been considered before. It turns out that it gives a negligible contribution. The calculation involves a careful treatment of the QCD colour structure of the amplitudes.

Abstract

Abstract We review the physics opportunities of the Future Circular Collider, covering its e+e-, pp, ep and heavy ion programmes. We describe the measurement capabilities of each FCC component, addressing the study of electroweak, Higgs and strong interactions, the top quark and flavour, as well as phenomena beyond the Standard Model. We highlight the synergy and complementarity of the different colliders, which will contribute to a uniquely coherent and ambitious research programme, providing an unmatchable combination of precision and sensitivity to new physics.

Abstract We analyze in detail the LHC prospects at the center-of-mass enery of s $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 14 TeV for charged electroweakino searches, decaying to leptons, in compressed supersymmetry scenarios, via exclusive photon-initiated pair production. This provides a potentially increased sensitivity in comparison to inclusive channels, where the background is often overwhelming. We pay particular attention to the challenges that such searches would face in the hostile high pile-up environment of the LHC, giving close consideration to the backgrounds that will be present. The signal we focus on is the exclusive production of same-flavour muon and electron pairs, with missing energy in the final state, and with two outgoing intact protons registered by the dedicated forward proton detectors installed in association with ATLAS and CMS. We present results for slepton masses of 120–300 GeV and slepton-neutralino mass splitting of 10–20 GeV, and find that the relevant backgrounds can be controlled to the level of the expected signal yields. The most significant such backgrounds are due to semi-exclusive lepton pair production at lower masses, with a proton produced in the initial proton dissociation system registering in the forward detectors, and from the coincidence of forward protons produced in pile-up events with an inclusive central event that mimics the signal. We also outline a range of potential methods to further suppress these backgrounds as well as to enlarge the signal yields.

Abstract

Abstract We present results of the updated SuperChic 3 Monte Carlo event generator for central exclusive production. This extends the previous treatment of proton–proton collisions to include heavy ion (pA and AA) beams, for both photon and QCD-initiated production, the first time such a unified treatment of exclusive processes has been presented in a single generator. To achieve this we have developed a theory of the gap survival factor in heavy ion collisions, which allows us to derive some straightforward results about the A scaling of the corresponding cross sections. We compare against the recent ATLAS and CMS measurements of light-by-light scattering at the LHC, in lead-lead collisions. We find that the background from QCD-initiated production is expected to be very small, in contrast to some earlier estimates. We also present results from new photon-initiated processes that can now be generated, namely the production of axion-like particles, monopole pairs and monopolium, top quark pair production, and the inclusion of W loops in light-by-light scattering.

Abstract

he Review summarizes much of particle physics and cosmology. Using data from previous editions, plus 3,324 new measurements from 878 papers, we list, evaluate, and average measured properties of gauge bosons and the recently discovered Higgs boson, leptons, quarks, mesons, and baryons. We summarize searches for hypothetical particles such as supersymmetric particles, heavy bosons, axions, dark photons, etc. Particle properties and search limits are listed in Summary Tables. We give numerous tables, figures, formulae, and reviews of topics such as Higgs Boson Physics, Supersymmetry, Grand Unified Theories, Neutrino Mixing, Dark Energy, Dark Matter, Cosmology, Particle Detectors, Colliders, Probability and Statistics. Among the 120 reviews are many that are new or heavily revised, including a new review on High Energy Soft QCD and Diffraction and one on the Determination of CKM Angles from B Hadrons. The Review is divided into two volumes. Volume 1 includes the Summary Tables and 98 review articles. Volume 2 consists of the Particle Listings and contains also 22 reviews that address specific aspects of the data presented in the Listings. The complete Review (both volumes) is published online on the website of the Particle Data Group (pdg.lbl.gov) and in a journal. Volume 1 is available in print as the PDG Book. A Particle Physics Booklet with the Summary Tables and essential tables, figures, and equations from selected review articles is available in print and as a web version optimized for use on phones as well as an Android app.

Abstract

We recall the main properties of inclusive particle distributions expected for Pomeron-proton and Pomeron-Pomeron interactions. Due to the small size of the Pomeron we expect larger transverse momenta of secondaries and a smaller probability of Multiple Interactions, that is a narrower multiplicity distribution. We propose to compare the spectra of secondaries produced in the Pomeron and the proton interactions in terms of the Feynman $x_F$ variable. The main difference should be observed for a relatively large $x_F$, that is near the edge of rapidity gaps. Such data offer the opportunity to illuminate the properties of the `soft' or `Regge' Pomeron, which drives the minimum-bias type of events in high energy $pp$ interactions. Abstract

The Review summarizes much of particle physics and cosmology. Using data from previous editions, plus 2,143 new measurements from 709 papers, we list, evaluate, and average measured properties of gauge bosons and the recently discovered Higgs boson, leptons, quarks, mesons, and baryons. We summarize searches for hypothetical particles such as supersymmetric particles, heavy bosons, axions, dark photons, etc. Particle properties and search limits are listed in Summary Tables. We give numerous tables, figures, formulae, and reviews of topics such as Higgs Boson Physics, Supersymmetry, Grand Unified Theories, Neutrino Mixing, Dark Energy, Dark Matter, Cosmology, Particle Detectors, Colliders, Probability and Statistics. Among the 120 reviews are many that are new or heavily revised, including a new review on Machine Learning, and one on Spectroscopy of Light Meson Resonances. The Review is divided into two volumes. Volume 1 includes the Summary Tables and 97 review articles. Volume 2 consists of the Particle Listings and contains also 23 reviews that address specific aspects of the data presented in the Listings. We calculate the probability that the rapidity gaps in diffractive processes survive both eikonal and enhanced rescattering. We present arguments that enhanced rescattering, which violates soft-hard factorization, is not very strong. We study the prompt production of the $\chi_c(1^+)$ and $\chi_b(1^+)$ mesons at high energies. Unlike $\chi(0^+,2^+)$ production, $\chi (1^+)$ mesons cannot be created at LO via the fusion of two on-mass-shell gluons, that is $gg\to\chi_{c,b}(1^+)$ are not allowed. However, the available experimental data show that the cross sections for $\chi_c(1^+)$ and $\chi_c(2^+)$ are comparable. We therefore investigate four other $\chi(1^+)$ production mechanisms: namely, (i) the standard NLO process $gg\to\chi_{c,b}(1^+)+g$, (ii) via gluon virtuality, (iii) via gluon reggeization and, finally, (iv) the possibility to form $\chi_{c,b}(1^+)$ by the fusion of three gluons, where one extra gluon comes from another parton cascade, as in the Double Parton Scattering processes.

Central exclusive Higgs boson production, pp -> p + H + p, at the LHC and s-channel resonant Higgs production in the photon-collider option of the ILC can provide a very important contribution to the comprehensive study of the Higgs sector. Especially attractive is the b bbar Higgs decay mode, which for certain MSSM scenarios may become the discovery channel in exclusive Higgs production at the LHC and the Photon Collider (PC). Strongly suppressed and controllable backgrounds is an obvious requirement for the success of these exclusive measurements. One of the main sources of background comes from additional gluon radiation which leads to a three-jet b bbar g final state. We perform an explicit calculation of the subprocesses gg -> q qbar g and gamma gamma -> q qbar g, where the incoming particles are required to be in a J_z=0 state and the two gluons form a colour singlet, and investigate the salient properties of these potentially important background processes., Comment: 23 pages, 2 figures

We discuss an inclusive approach to the measurement of the e+e- --> pi+ pi- cross--section by the radiative return method without photon tagging. The essential part of this approach is the choice of rules for event selection which provide rejection of events with 3 (or more) pions and decrease the final--state radiation background. The radiative corrections to the initial--state radiation process are computed for DAPhNE conditions, using the quasi--real electron approximation for both, the cross--section and the underlying kinematics. Abstract

We present a study of the central exclusive production of light meson pairs, concentrating on the region of lower invariant masses of the central system and/or meson transverse momentum, where perturbative QCD cannot be reliably applied. We describe in detail a phenomenological model, using the tools of Regge theory, that may be applied with some success in this regime, and we present the new, publicly available, Dime Monte Carlo (MC) implementation of this for $\pi\pi$, $KK$ and $\rho\rho$ production. The MC includes a fully differential treatment of the survival factor, which in general depends on all kinematic variables, as well as allowing for the so far reasonably unconstrained model parameters to be set by the user. We present predictions for the Tevatron and LHC and show how future measurements may further test this Regge--based approach, as well as the soft hadronic model required to calculate the survival factor, in particular in the presence of tagged protons., Comment: 26 pages, 3 tables, 10 figures. Abstract

The study of an intermediate mass Higgs boson via the process $\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}H\ensuremath{\rightarrow}b\overline{b}$ from an initially polarized ${J}_{z}=0$ state has been advocated as an important feasible goal of a future photon linear collider. The crucial argument was the ${m}_{b}^{2}/s$ suppression of the background process $\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}{(J}_{z}=0)\ensuremath{\rightarrow}b\overline{b}$. We critically review the contribution of the radiative background processes (in which the ${m}_{b}^{2}/s$ suppression is absent) to the quasi-two-jet-like events with at least one, but preferably two, tagged energetic $b$ jets. Within a complete study of the radiative processes, we find that a sizable background contribution can come from the helicity-violating $\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}{(J}_{z}=0)\ensuremath{\rightarrow}b\overline{b}$ process accompanied by soft gluon emission. These latter radiative corrections contain a new type of double logarithmic (DL) terms. We clarify the physical nature of these novel DL corrections. Despite the fact that the one-loop DL terms are comparable or even larger than the Born term, fortunately we find that the calculation of the cross section in the two-loop approximation is sufficient for a reliable evaluation of the background to the Higgs signal.

We present the results of a recent novel application of the `hard exclusive' perturbative formalism to the process gg --> MMbar at large angles, where M (Mbar) is a light meson (anti-meson). As well as discussing the important theoretical features of the relevant leading-order gg --> qqbar(gg) qqbar(gg) 6-parton amplitudes, we also comment on their phenomenological implications. In particular, we consider the central exclusive production of meson pairs at comparatively large transverse momentum k_t, which is expected to proceed via this mechanism. We find that the overall contribution of this source of background is orders of magnitude lower than that caused by the main irreducible background resulting from the gg^{PP} -> b(bar)b subprocess. Abstract

Motivated by the recent experimental observation of exclusive chi_c events at the Tevatron, we revisit earlier studies of central exclusive scalar chi_c0 meson production, before generalising the existing formalism to include chi_c1 and chi_c2 mesons. Although chi_c0 production was previously assumed to be dominant, we find that the chi_c1 and chi_c2 rates for the experimentally considered chi_c -> J/psi gamma -> mu+ mu- gamma decay process are in fact comparable to the chi_c0 rate. We have developed a new Monte Carlo event generator, SuperCHIC, which models the central exclusive production of the three chi_c states via this decay chain, and have explored possible ways of distinguishing them, given that their mass differences are not resolvable within the current experimental set-up. Although we find that the severity of current experimental cuts appears to preclude this, the acceptance does not change crucially between the three states and so our conclusions regarding the overall rates remain unchanged. This therefore raises the interesting possibility that exclusive chi_c1 and chi_c2 production has already been observed at the Tevatron., 30 pages, 8 figures, minor typos corrected, version to appear in EPJC

We calculate the amplitude of gg->bb(bar) production for the colour singlet, J_z=0 di-gluon state at O(\alpha_S^2) order. We consider the cancellation, and a realistic cutoff, of the infrared divergent terms. We show that the one-loop radiative QCD contributions effectively reduce the Born level result for the central exclusive bb(bar) cross section at the LHC. This process is essentially the only irreducible QCD background to the exclusive H->bb(bar) signal., Comment: 24 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

We present the first calculation of exclusive double $J/\psi$ production in hadronic collisions. We analyse in detail the form of the Born-level $gg \to J/\psi J/\psi$ amplitudes within the non-relativistic quarkonium approximation and discuss the implications of this for the central exclusive production channel, within the `Durham' perturbative model. In addition we show that this direct single parton scattering contribution is expected to be strongly dominant in the exclusive case. We present predictions for the LHC and show that the expected cross sections are in reasonable agreement with the LHCb Run-I measurement of exclusive double $J/\psi$ production, with the measured invariant mass distribution described well by the theory. Motivated by this encouraging result we present predictions for observables that may be measured in LHC Run-II, and estimate the size of the expected cross sections in the $\psi(2S)$ and $\chi_{c}$ cases., Comment: 24 pages, 7 figures. Abstract

The triple-Pomeron coupling lies at the heart of the predictions for high energy diffractive processes. We explain why the existing determinations, which use single-particle inclusive hadronic data a+b -> a+Y, underestimate the value of the bare coupling, due to the neglect of soft rescattering which populates the rapidity gaps. We describe how data for the process gamma+p -> J/psi +Y can be used to give a much more reliable estimate of the bare coupling. We use the existing, fragmentary, J/psi data from HERA to show that the triple-Pomeron coupling is probably about 3 times larger than the previous determinations. We emphasize the importance of an explicit measurement of the mass spectrum of the Y system which accompanies J/psi production at HERA. The consequences for ultra high energy cosmic ray showers are mentioned., 10 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

We present a model of high energy soft $pp$ interactions that has multi s- and t-channel components, which has been tuned to describe all the available data. The t-channel components allow matching of the soft to the hard (QCD) Pomeron. Absorptive effects are found to be large, and, for example, suppress the prediction of the total $pp$ cross section to about 90 mb at the LHC. We use the model to calculate the survival probability, S^2, of the rapidity gaps in the exclusive process pp \to p+H+p, a process with great advantages for searching for the H \to \bb signal. Abstract

The transverse momentum distribution of soft hadrons and jets that accompany central hard-scattering production at hadron colliders is of great importance, since it has a direct bearing on the ability to separate new-physics signals from Standard Model backgrounds. We compare the predictions for the gluonic ${k}_{t}$--distribution using two different approaches: resummed Next-to-Leading-Logarithm (NLL) Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) and Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi (DGLAP) evolution. We find that as long as the initial and final virtualities (${k}_{t}$) along the emission chain are not too close to each other, the NLL resummed BFKL results do not differ significantly from those obtained using standard DGLAP evolution. The saturation momentum ${Q}_{s}(x)$, calculated within the resummed BFKL approach, grows with $1/x$ even slower than in the leading-order DGLAP case.

Abstract

We study the central diffractive production of the (three neutral) Higgs bosons, with a rapidity gap on either side, in an MSSM scenario with CP-violation. We consider the bb-bar and tautau-bar decay for the light H_1 boson and the four b-jet final state for the heavy H_2 and H_3 bosons, and discuss the corresponding backgrounds. A direct indication of the existence of CP-violation can come from the observation of either an azimuthal asymmetry in the angular distribution of the tagged forward protons (for the exclusive pp -> p+H+p process) or of a sin(2phi) contribution in the azimuthal correlation between the transverse energy flows in the proton fragmentation regions for the process with the diffractive dissociation of both incoming protons (pp -> X+H+Y). We emphasise the advantage of reactions with the rapidity gaps (that is production by the pomeron-pomeron fusion) to probe CP parity and to determine the quantum numbers of the produced central object., 11 pages, 3 figures
