The assessment of changes in the population spread of individual ichthyofauna species (lampreys and fishes) as well as the identification of unfavourable impacts is the necessary prerequisite for the correct selection of corrective measures. The river network in the Czech Republic belongs to the three sea-drainage areas (North Sea, Baltic Sea, and Black Sea). The species composition of the original ichthyofauna and the extent of the threat to some species differs in the individual sea-drainage areas. The original ichthyofauna in the Czech Republic consists of 4 lamprey species and 55 fish species. Out of this, only one lamprey species and 31 fish species originate in all three sea-drainage areas. There are 37 fish species considered as the original ones in the North Sea drainage area, there of 4 species are EX, 1 species EW, and 11 species (29.7%) are threatened. In the Baltic Sea drainage area, there are 4 species EX, 1 species EW, and 8 species (22.8%) threatened out of the total 35 assessed species. Out of 49 species in the Black Sea drainage area, there are 4 species EX and 23 species (46.9 %) threatened. The most important reasons considered as the causes of the disappearance or reduction in the presence of some fishes are the water pollution, adjustments to water flow beds, the limitation of floods in alluvial areas, the permanent river basin fragmentation, and the spread of invasive species. Out of these factors, the only positive change has been noticed in the pronounced decrease in water flow pollution after 1990. Angling is also considered as the set of targeted bio manipulation which purposefully and often one-sidedly influences fish populations for the benefit of species being interesting for the angling sport.

Comparisons of morphology, nuclear gene sequencing and microsatellites were used to identify 19 hybrids between the related species Cottus poecilopus and Cottus gobio in three rivers of the Odra River drainage basin. All hybrids were the results of backcrossing and no F1 generation hybrid was found. The resulting progeny are fertile and continue in backcrossing with parental conspecifics. A high representation of backcrosses appears to indicate a lack of reproduction barriers within the hybridization process. It was impossible to differentiate individual back-cross categories on the sole basis of six loci. Mitochondrial haplotypes indicate that this is not a one-way process. In our study, hybridization was asymmetrical in favour of Cottus poecilopus.

Both mitochondrial DNA sequence and two nuclear microsatellite markers were used to confirm the identity of the first record of Carassius auratus gibelio in the western (Swedish) Baltic Sea region. A total of 49 fishes were analysed, where 22 were from three Swedish sites connected to the Baltic Sea. The D-loop mitochondrial DNA sequences showed that 16 of 22 Swedish fishes were related to C. a. gibelio. The phylogenetic analysis of these sequences showed that these fish are probably not native, but represent different lineages of C. a. gibelio from China, Japan and Russia. All except three of these 16 fishes had microsatellite alleles suggesting hybridization with Carassius carassius. These findings suggest that a cryptic invasion of C. a. gibelio might be in progress.

Over the past 150 years, the waters of the Czech Republic were experimentally stocked or invaded by a total of 41 alien (non-native) fish species. The following species have become fully naturalized and produced self-sustained populations: Carassius gibelio, Pseudorasbora parva, Ameiurus nebulosus and Gasterosteus aculeatus, which produced stable populations in several spatially limited localities. In some cases Oncorhynchus mykiss, Salvelinus fontinalis and Coregonus maraena will produce instable temporary populations based on released material obtained from fish farms and ponds. The occurrence of the remaining acclimatized alien species (Coregonus peled, Ctenopharyngodon idella, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, Aristichthys nobilis) in natural ecosystems and fishponds depends on stocking fish obtained from artificial spawning and cultures. The documented annual average production of alien species fit for human consumption amounts to around 2 000 tonnes, i.e. 8.2% of the annual average production of marketable fish cultures in the Czech Republic. A significant negative impact of the introduced species on native ichthyofauna has been ascertained as regards its ecological, biological properties, biodiversity and health. Considered a typical invasive alien species, Carassius gibelio heavily depressed the occurrence and numbers of indigenous Carassius carassius populations and also contributed to the decreased numbers of Tinca tinca, Leucaspius delineatus and other native cyprinid fish. P. parva and A. nebulosus show a much weaker and limited impact. The introduction of C. idella was accompanied by the introduction of the tapeworm species, Bothriocephalus gowkongensis, which subsequently caused heavy losses in cultures of Cyprinus carpio. In 2008, Neogobius melanostomus was recorded for the first time in this country at the confluence of the Morava and Dyje rivers.

Wild-captured 16 diploid, five triploid and one tetraploid Prussian carp Carassius gibelio males produced motile haploid, aneuploid (1·5n) and haploid to aneuploid (> 2n) sperm, respectively, in similar concentration and with the lowest percentage of live spermatozoa in sperm for the tetraploid male (mean ±s.d. 83·03 ± 1·76%; P 0·05).

Morphometric and genetic variation were examined in parental Carassius auratus gibelio and Carassius carassius individuals, and their natural hybrids. Of meristic traits, only the number of gill rakers clearly distinguished hybrids (39·4 ± 1·4) from parental C. a. gibelio (48·3 ± 0·7) and C. carassius (28·6 ± 1·1). MtDNA sequences showed that the hybrids were descendants of female C. a. gibelio. Microsatellite analysis confirmed the presence in hybrids of variants typical of C. a. gibelio and C. carassius.

A Carassius auratus complex from an artificial wetland in the Morava River basin is composed of triploid females. Based on body depth, sampled females could be divided into two groups: (i) high-dorsal (42.5% of standard length); and (ii) low-dorsal (36.1% of standard length). Both groups differed also in number of gill rakers (50.2 versus 45.4, respectively). In concordance with morphological differences, genetic analysis proved the existence of two haplotypes in examined individuals. The first haplotype is bound to the high-dorsal form with higher number of gill rakers. This is the most frequent haplotype in populations of the C. a gibelio form in the Czech Republic. The second haplotype is characteristic of the low-dorsal form with a lower number of gill rakers. This haplotype is close to haplotypes described in the C. a. langsdorfii form, which is known from Japan. and its occurrence within haplotypes specified in European territory is sporadic.

Changes in the ichthyocenosis of five smaller streams of 2nd to 4th order existing in the spring section of the River Odra (Oder) catchment area, in the territory of the Czech Republic, were observed before and after the catastrophic floods of July 1997. Quantitative catches using electro-fishing were performed in June, August, and September 1997, i.e. a month before and 2 months after the floods. The maximum flow of water in the examined sites usually reached or exceeded the limit of the so-called ȁ8once in a century high waterȁ9. Extreme floods did not influence statistically the proven average readings of species diversity of ichthyocenosis in the examined sites (p = 0.5625), species variety (p = 0.7316), abundance per hectare (p = 0.3125), and biomass per hectare (p = 0.4375). A distinctive decline in abundance and also in the biomass of the ichthyocenosis took place in geomorphic reaches. Significant incisions and alterations in the routes of the streams were also observed. Statistical data of catches of key reophilous fish species from the River Oder catchment basin, all of which were affected by the floods, in the periods 1995–1996, 1997, and 1998–1999, were evaluated. Catches of the species of Salmo trutta and Thymallus thymallus in 1997 considerably increased. Only Thymallus thymallus experienced a more pronounced decrease in the years after the floods, when compared with the average readings made in the period 1995–1996. The readings of the adult abundance of Barbus barbus and Chondrostoma nasus did not prove a negative impact of the floods on the adult population of both species in the assessed years. Our findings suggest that the original fish communities may be naturally well adapted to culmination flows.

Haematological parameters of 2-year-old carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) were assessed to study the protective effect of chloride on the health of fish exposed to elevated nitrite concentrations. Four groups of carp were exposed to different concentrations of nitrite and chloride for 96 h (group E1: 67 mg L−1 NO2−, 11 mg L−1 Cl−; group E2: 67 mg L−1 NO2−, 100 mg L−1 Cl−; group E3: 0 mg L−1 O2−, 100 mg L−1 Cl− and group C: 0 mg L−1 NO2−, 11 mg L−1 Cl−). The phylogenetic relationships among gudgeons that represent most nominal taxa within Gobio gobio sensu lato were examined by mitochondrial and nuclear genome sequencing. The molecular analyses confirmed the separate generic status of Gobio as a monophyletic group and revealed 15 Eurasian lineages divided into two main clades, the Northern European and the Ponto-Caspian. The validity of eleven nominal taxa as distinct species was confirmed, gudgeons from the Volga River basin were described as a new species G. volgensis, and three revealed phylogenetic lineages were submitted for a comprehensive revision as "species-in-waiting". The species G. gobio showed a wide range extending from the British Isles to the Black Sea coast and overlapped the areas of several other species. Four pure lineages were detected in the middle Danube River basin. The Crimean Peninsula was found to be a region with the occurrence of individuals of hybrid origin. This region will require special investigation to define species participating in hybridization events, and to establish further steps for the conservation of endemic native gudgeon species. A simple diagnostic method, based on different lengths of the PCR products, called "S7indel diagnostics" is presented for further taxonomic investigations in the genus Gobio.
